Michel MagneFantomas ... LP
Universal (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Excellent French crime soundtracks from the 60s – handled up with a great mix of jazz, mod, and other groovy modes by the mighty Michel Magne! Fantomas was this creepy blue-faced master criminal – depicted in three French films at the time – Fantomas, Fantomas Se Dechaine, and Fantomas Contre Scotland Yard – all movies based on the much earlier series of crime books from earlier in the century The films have disappeared a bit from film culture – but the soundtracks seem to get more and more notoriety over the years, thanks to the current revival in lost groovy b-grade scores! Michel Magne scored all three films – and titles include "Fantomas Se Dechaine", "Une DS Dans Le Ciel", "Theme De Fantomas", "Operation Artaban", "Ma Chere Helene", "L'Ultime Evasion", and "Fantomas S'Echappe". Michel MagneLes Tontons Flingueurs ... LP
Le Pop Club (France), 1963. New Copy ... $34.99
Very groovy work from the mighty Michel Magne – an early 60s soundtrack on the French scene, and one that showed that music like this was soon going to rival all the cool changes going on in Italian cinema too! There's a nice blend of jazzy and mod elements going on here – older soundtrack modes given a special tweak – so that the Magne magic means that things take on all these cool 60s touches – with wordless vocals, jerky rhythms, and even some very cool organ lines at times! The set only features six tracks, but they're all pretty darn great – and titles include "Tontons Swing", "Tamoure Hully Gully", "Slow De Tontons", "Route De Nuit", "Tamoure", and "Final". Michel MagneMusique Taschiste ... LP
Cacophonic (UK), 1957. New Copy ... $14.99 26.99
Striking sounds from Michel Magne – an artist who's best known for his groovy soundtracks of the 60s – but who steps out here with a rare experimental set from the late 50s! The style is very much in keeping with the most compelling of the postwar generation in France – as Magne mixes together electronic and acoustic sounds with amazing power – modes that are sometimes as spacious as Pierre Henry, other times as sonically powerful as Xenakis – yet always very much Michel's own unique musical vision! Instrumentation includes some great cymbalum, plus piano, violin, vibes, and percussion – as well as some amzing vocalizations from Jaqueline Dano and Christiane Legrand. Titles include "Memoire D'Un Trou", "Self Service", "Concertino Triple", "Meta Mecanique Saccadee", "Larmes En Sol Pleureur", and "Pointes De Feu Amorties Au Dolsal". LP, Vinyl record album

Michel MagneUn Singe En Hiver ... LP
Le Pop Club (France), 1963. New Copy ... $30.99
Beautiful work from French Soundtrack legend Michel Magne – an artist who's known for some famous groovy work at the end of the 60s, and already pretty far on his way with this earlier set! The record has an odd mix of styles – sometimes using strings in conventionally sentimental ways, but other times bringing in starker instruments to carve out Eastern themes – but in a way that swings with a groovier 60s edge! The timing of the set is a bit short of the mod/jerk years in French cinema, but there's some exotic elements that more than offset that difference – and titles include "Pekin Buenos Aires", "L'Amite", "Corrida Ethylique", "China Jazz Hot", and "Yang Tse Kiang". Michel Magne/Bernard GerardLes Tontons Flingueurs Et Autres Films De Georges Lautner ... LP
Universal (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $33.99 36.99
A great collection of work from Michel Magne – one of the hippest French soundtrack talents of the 60s! Most of side one features music for the film Les Tontons Flinguers – an early 60s soundtrack on the French scene, and one that showed that music like this was soon going to rival all the cool changes going on in Italian cinema too! But the record also features a lot more music too – all from films directed by the great Georges Lautner – including five numbers from the excellent crime film Ne Nous Fachons Pas by Bernard Gerard, and more Michel Magne tracks from Galia, Fleur D'Oseille, and Les Barbouzes – LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Michel MagneLe Monocle Rit Jaune EP ... 7-inch
Jazz Room (UK), 1964. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The title cut here is fantastic – one of the coolest tunes we've ever heard from French soundtrack maestro Michel Magne – a track that begins with a vamping modal groove, then opens into a flute solo of the sort you might be likely to hear from Yusef Lateef! The flipside features some more standard soundtrack material in the familiar Magne mode – including nice use of theremin on "Le Monocle D'Sattendrit" – plus the cuts "Monocle Story" and "Le Monocle Sourtit". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Michel Magne/Bernard GerardLes Tontons Flingueurs (And More!) ... CD
Universal (France), Mid 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set of groovy tunes from mad mid 60s French films – recorded in a variety of wild styles! The CD features tracks from a number of movies directed by Georges Lautner – including Les Tontons Flingeurs, Les Barbouzes, Ne Nous Fachons Pas, La Grande Sauterelle, and Le Monocle Rit Jaune – all slightly whimsical films, scored here in the manner of groovy movies from mid 60s America or London! Magne's work dominates the set, as he did 4 of the 6 films involved, but Bernard Gerard throws in some nicely rocking touches to match the mood of the other tunes – making for a pretty crazy batch of tracks with a strong 60s feel! Titles include "Monocle Story", "Ne Nous Fachons Pas", "Barbouzes En Folie", "Du Riffi Au Chateau", "Slow Des Tontons", "Route De Nuit", and "Mechoui". 22 titles, and some nice images from the films! Universal (France), 2021. New Copy ... $14.99
New takes on classic cuts from the glory days of French cinema – either remixed versions of the older tracks, or new constructions completely – brought together in a special celebration of the 20 years of soundtrack reissues in the Ecoutez Le Cinema series! As you'd guess, the focus here is very French – and titles include a remake of "Compartiment Teurs" by Michel Magne, done by DJ Patif; "La Horse (disco rmx)" originally by Serge Gainsbourg and Jean-Claude Vannier, handled by Marathon Men's; a version of "Melodie En Sous Sol" by Michel Magne, done by Fred Pallem with alto sax from Remi Sciuto; "Le Samourai Se Remixe", a fresh take on a tune by Francois De Roubaix, done by Nicolas Errera; a cool remake of the Francois De Roubaix tune "L'Homme Orchestra", done with Jean Michel Bernard on arrangements and Hammond; "Fantomas Se Remixe", a remix of Michel Magne's theme for Fantomas by Nicolas Errera; and "Dernier Domicile Connu/Le Mere Est Grande/L'Homme Orchestre" – all tunes by Francois De Roubaix, done in a "Jean-Luc Guitar remix" by Gonzales and Taylor Savvy. VariousSexopolis – French Erotic Retro Movies Grooves (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Cosmic Disco Machine (Italy), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $36.99
Fantastic funky cuts from the glory days of the French soundtrack scene – a moment when some of that nation's film composers were really tripping out, but in a way that's very different than American or Italian soundtrack talents of the time! If you know the funky moments in the work of Serge Gainsbourg, you'll know part of the vibe here – but there's a nicely expansive approach here that runs the gamut of modes from the late 60s on up to the early 80s – with cuts from thrillers, erotic films, and even just some regular movies that happen to have some pretty darn great soundtracks! The set features 29 tracks in all – and titles include "OK Chicago" by Resonnance, "I Don't Know Why" by Francis Lai, "Les Temps Des Loups" by George Garvarentz, "Grand Theme Malko" by Michel Magne, "Munich Party" by Thierry Vincent, "Fantasme D'Emmanuelle" by Michel Magne, "Le Crocodile Porte-Cle" by Bernard Gerard, "Petrol Pop" by Michel Magne & Jean Yanne, "Disco Circus" by Pierre Bachelet, "Sexopolis" by Jean-Pierre Mirouze, "Full Speed" by Claude Bolling, "Kidnapping" by Karl Heinz Schafer, "Two Partners" by Jean Pierre Pouret, "Femmes" by Nathalie Et Christine, and "Le Theme D'Olivier" by Francis Lai. ✨✧ VariousEcoutez Le Cinema – 20 Ans ... CD
Universal (France), 1960s/1970s/1980s. New Copy 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A wonderful celebration of the long-running Ecoutez Le Cinema series – a book-styled package that brings together dozens of rare and classic soundtrack tunes, plus a big booklet of notes! The CDs feature titles from across the series – 2CDs' worth of music from dozens of films, handled by top-shelf composers who include Lalo Shifrin, Quincy Jones, Michel Magne, Antoine Duhamel, Georges Delerue, Alain Goraguer, Martial Solal, Michel Legrand, Eric Demarsan, Francois De Roubaix, Krzystof Komeda, Jimmy Smith, Jean Claude-Vannier, and many others – with the strong focus on French film score artists that we've always loved in the series. The book is 90 pages, in full color, with lots of images of films and composers –and essays that bring together two different talents – Martial Solal on Jean Luc Godard, Alain Goraguer on Serge Gainsbourg, Costa Gavras on Michel Magne, Lalo Schifrin on Rene Clement, and so on. All these essays are in French, but the other contents are very enjoyable from a language-less perspective! CD

Jazzy tracks from French crime films of the 50s and 60s – played by the likes of Michel Magne, Georges Delerue, Francis Lemarque, Eddie Barclay, Jo Boyer, and Georges Garvarentz.
