MetroMetro (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Transatlantic/Big Pink (South Korea), 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
A modest classic from the British scene of the mid 70s – and an album that may loom large in the history books, but which has found its way into plenty of record collections over the years! Metro features lead vocals from Peter Godwin and plenty of support from Duncan Browne – the latter of whom had some great solo work in the late 60s, the former who'd bloom more as a solo act after the breakup of this group! Sean Lyons is part of the trio, providing plenty of support on guitar – and there's a post-glam mix of cool compression and class that's very much in the Roxy Music generation – on titles that include "Precious", "Momo Messiah", "Black Lace Shoulder", "Paris", "Jade", "One Way Night", and "Criminal World" CD

Louis Van Dyke with Mark Murphy, Dave Pike, et alMetro's Midnight Music – Rare Jazz Tracks From The Dutch NOS Radio Show 1970 to 1975 ... CD
Sonorama (Germany), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $9.99 21.99
A rare jazz treasure from the European scene of the early 70s – killer material from a wealth of American artists and local talents – all done as special sessions for Dutch radio, and never issued to the public on record! Despite the radio origins of the music, the sound here is tremendous – easily on a par with the best MPS sessions of the time – which is no surprise, given that many of the artists here worked in similar circles! The first half of the set features the trio of pianist Louis Van Dyke augmented with guests who include Mark Murphy, Helen Merrill, Eddie Jefferson, Toots Thielemans, Herb Geller, and Dave Pike – all stepping out into the spotlight while Van Dyke's combo backs them up with lively grooves that are often heavy on bossa influences! The second half features larger orchestrations from The Metropole Orchestra – a soaring big band who groove wonderfully, often in support of vocals from Murphy or Greetje Kauffeld, but also featuring instrumental solos from European players Ack Van Rooyen, Piet Nordijk, Ferdinand Povel, and others. The whole set is worth it alone for the vocals of Murphy – because the record easily stands as some of his best work ever from this decade – and given how great Mark was at the time, that's really saying a lot! Small group titles include "Children Of The Sun", "So What", "Love Sick", "Sao Paulo", "Con Alma", "Seventh Day", and "Falling In Love With Love" – and bigger group numbers include "Out Of This World", "My Shining Hour", "Let's Fall In Love", "Get Happy", "I'll Wind", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "Paper Moon", "One For My Baby", "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and "That Old Black Magic". 37 tracks in all! CD
(And don't miss the Mark Murphy Happy Samba 7" – which features different material from the same sessions!)

✨✧ VariousSoul Culture 03 – Elevate Our Minds – Metro Radical Beats ... CD
BMG (Germany), 1970s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Righteous funk from the backside of the 70s mainstream – tracks pulled from long-lost albums on Sony and BMG, and featuring a wealth of unusually grooving numbers that really blew our minds! A few familiar tunes sit next to lesser-known ones that have a decidedly quirky approach to funk – mixing acoustic elements with more common electric rhythms, and often borrowing a bit from non-Anglo rhythms of the generation. As with other volumes in the Soul Culture series, the material here is all top-shelf and hand-picked by British rare groovers with a keen desire to dig far deeper than the usual set of this nature. Titles include "Glorioso Santo Antonio" by Antonio Carlos & Jocafi, "Slippin Into Darkness" by Ramsey Lewis, "Don't Tell Me Tell Her" by Odyssey, "Sunlight" by Youngbloods, "Been Had" by Sapo, "Work To Do" by Main Ingredient, "When A Little Love Began To Die" by Friends Of Distinction, "Creepin" by Tamiko Jones, "Actions Speak Louder Than Words" by Chocolate Milk, "Elevate Our Minds" by Linda Williams, "Yesterday I Heard The Rain" by New Birth, and "Grand Central Shuffle" by Johnny Griffiths. ✨✧ VariousBossa Nova Baby – The Sultry Groove ... CD
Metro (UK), 1960s/1970s/1980s/1990s/2000s. Used 2CD ... $4.99
A sweet little collection that goes way beyond basic bossa nova – as it offers up tunes from a host of different vintages, in different styles of the genre – including some surprising gems from recent years too! Vintage material is blended nicely with cuts from Far Out and a few other current labels – and together, the tracks show the strong evolution of bossa nova into the 21st Century – way past the basic sounds at the start. There's a number of tracks on here we've never heard before – and titles include "The Girl From Ipanema" by Paula Santoro, "O Nosso Amor" by Vanja Orico, "Agua De Beber" by Xavier Osmir, "Meu Samba Torto" by Clara Moreno, "How Insensitive" by Simao Morto, "Rio Bahia" by Joyce, "Wave" by Victor Assis Brasil, "Mas Que Nada" by Rio Combo, "Dindi" by Paula Santoro with Hugh Burns, "So Danco Samba" by Gustavo Marques, and "Salve Dom" by Armando Marcal. 32 tracks on 2CDs – quite a deal! ✨✧ Marisa MonteRose & Charcoal ... CD
Metro Blue, 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
When this album was first issued in the mid 90s by EMI, it quietly glided onto the market, with very little effect. Over the past few years, though, the record has slowly been championed by a large number of American critics and musicians, and has come to be one of the most critically acclaimed releases by a Brazilian musician in recent years. The album's a mix of jazz-tinged vocal tracks by Marisa, with a style that certainly owes something to earlier Brazilian singers like Gal Costa or Joyce, but which also has lots of its own nice touches. Arto Linday produced the set, and Marisa runs through a batch of songs that includes versions of Lou Reed's "Pale Blue Eyes", Arnaldo Antunes "Deepest Night", Jorge Ben's "Balanca Pema", and her own "Enquanto Isso", sung with Laurie Anderson. There's also loads of guests on the album – like Gilberto Gil, Carlinhos Brown, and others! CD

A nice little set of heavy funk numbers – mostly from the early 70s, and featuring some of the biggest names of classic funk! The package is a great way to dip into this sound at a nice price – and it's filled with essential tunes like "I Don't Know What It Is But It Sure Is Funky" by Ripple, "Hercules" by Aaron Neville, "People Make The World Go Round" by O'Donel Levy, "Got To Getcha" by Maceo, "You're Welcome Stop On By" by Bobby Womack, "Handclapping Song" by The Meters, "If It's Good To You" by Eddie Bo, "Yes We Can" by Lee Dorsey, and "So Much Trouble In My Mind" by Joe Quarterman. 16 cuts in all. ✨✧ Carlinhos BrownAlfagamabetizado ... CD
Metro Blue, 1996. Used ... Out Of Stock
A surprisingly successful mix of styles, and the kind of cross-culturally pollinated work that's been getting Carlinhos Brown a lot of attention over the past few years. This was Brown's first solo album – recorded after his work with Timbalada, with production by Wally Badarou and Arto Lindsay, and the usual requisite guest appearances by Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, and Marisa Monte (why is it that albums by US artists – apart from rappers – are never filled with so many guest appearances?) Brown works through a range of styles in this musical blend – from modern funk grooves to string-laden ballads – and the production by Lindsay and Badarou ties things nicely together. Titles include "Covered Saints", "Comunidade-Lobos", "O Bode", "Bog La Bag", "Angel's Robot List", and "Zanza". CD

An excellent set that features hard and heavy female soul tracks that run from the late 60s to the early 80s – tracing an evolution of the genre over the course of two decades, and including some great little gems that we don't have on other reissues! There's a total of 16 tracks on the set, which is packaged with a cool "career map" on the inside – and titles include "All Alone" by Sylvia Striplin, "I Knew That Love" by Ladies Of The 80s, "Theres A Break In The Road" by Betty Harris, "You Gotta Push" by Jodi Gales, "If I Work My Thing On You" by Ann Sexton, "Will You Be There" by The Jones Girls, "Love Cup" by The Teques, "It's You I Need" by Denice Chandler, "Baby Don't You Know" by Bobby Humphrey, and "No Good At Falling In Love" by Betty Davis. Modulo 1000Nao Fale Com Paredes ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), Early 70s. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $28.99 32.99
A record with a very plain cover, but one that contains some of the most searing guitar work of the early 70s – the one and only album by a short-lived group from Brazil – one who mix Sabbath-style hard rock with some more experimental modes – all at a level that's completely unlike anything we can think of from the time! There's some really offbeat production twists that almost seem to be learned from the Tropicalia generation – although the music here is much more straightforward, and delivered with familiar guitar, organ, bass, and drums – familiar instruments that, as in the hands of some of the giants of the time, take on raw power and sounds of their own when pushed to their limits! Lyrics are all in Portuguese, but that hardly matters, given the instrumental intensity of the set – which includes the titles "Turpe Est Sine Crine Caput", "Nao Fale Com Paredes", "Metro Mental", "Animaia", and "Espelho". Sonny RollinsSonny Rollins Brass/Sonny Rollins Trio ... LP
Verve, 1958. Near Mint- ... $14.99
Quite an unusual record for Sonny Rollins – but a great one too! At first glance the concept is a strange one – almost a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements – but oddly, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some angular counterpoint and a tight little space to make his own sound. The group was conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and the flipside of the album features Rollins playing in a small trio with the great Henry Grimes on bass (who also played with Rollins on some of his best sessions from the time!) and Charles Wright on drums. Titles include "Manhattan", "If You Were The Only Girl In the World", "Who Cares?", and "Far Out East". Originally issued on MGM/Metro – but this is the Verve pressing. LP, Vinyl record album

Barney WilenUn Temoin Dans La Ville (10 inch LP) ... LP
Mercury/Sam Records (France), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 39.99
One of the greatest French jazz soundtracks ever – a haunting score composed and performed by sax legend Barney Wilen! Barney's work is possibly best known to American audiences for his solos on the Miles Davis soundtrack Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud, recorded a year earlier – and this album has Barney working with American players Kenny Clarke, Kenny Dorham, and Duke Jordan to forge a very similar sound. Tracks are spare, moody, and feature a style that's often snakey and a bit modal – perfect for the dark mood of the film, and equally evocative without any image! 12 tracks in all – including "Ambiance Pourpe", "Poursuite Et Metro", "Melodie Pour Les Radio Taxis", "Temoin Dans La Ville", "Sur L'Antenne", and "SOS Radio Taxis". LP, Vinyl record album
(Wonderful pressing – a 10" LP with flipback cover, just like the original – but cut by Kevin Gray with even better sound!)

VariousNouvelle Vague – Les Musiques De Films 1957 to 1962 (3CD set) ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99 29.98
That's Miles Davis and Jeanne Moreau on the cover – and image is a perfect summation of what makes this period in film music so unique! The set brings together music from the French new wave of the late 50s and early 60s – a time when revolutionary directors were putting fresh new images on screen, and also turning to lots of new ideas for their music, too – using jazz musicians like Miles to create some of their soundtracks, and also moving past some of the more overblown orchestral styles that had dominated most of the world of film scores during the postwar years. Much of the work used by these directors was in a style that was closer to the people, and more fitting for the sorts of themes in the films – and this 3CD collection features a wonderful array of different modes from the period. Many films are included here with a few selections from their famous soundtracks – and the 3CD package includes work from Tires Sur Le Pianiste (Shoot The Piano Player) by Georges Delerue, A Bout De Souffle (Breathless) by Marial Solal, L'Eau A La Bouche by Serge Gainsbourg, A Double Tour by Paul Misraki, Les Liaisons Dangereuxes by Art Blakey with Barney Wilen, La Tete Contre Les Murs by Maurice Jarre, Le Bel Age by Georges Delerue, Les Bonnes Femmes by Paul Misraki, Jules Et Jim by Georges Delerue, Lola by Michel Legrand, Les 400 Coups (400 Blows) by Jean Constantin, Une Femme Est Une Femme by Michel Legrand, Zazi Dans Le Metro by Fiorenzo Carpi, Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud by Miles Davis, and Cleo De 5 A 7 by Michel Legrand. A big crossover classic for the champions of the Minneapolis scene – their first for Sire and featuring some of the greatest rock songs of the 80s, be it college radio, mainstream or any thing – greatness period! An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. This second volume features work from Savoy's prime 70s gospel years – 20 tracks by artists who include The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, and Highway QCs. Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2002. New Copy ... $23.99 28.00
Unreleased work from the glory days of the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet – a legendary free jazz ensemble that's playing here at the height of their powers! The group have a vibe here that's wonderful – both as playful and as sinister as the title might imply – stretched out to a performance that's almost 20 minutes in length, and which almost has a sort of cinematic sense of dynamism at times – although still with all the unscripted energy that made the group so great. Brotzmann is in the lead on tenor, with Mars Williams on tenor and soprano, Ken Vandermark on baritone, Mats Gustafsson on alto, Joe McPhee on valve trombone, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, and Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. The first-ever issue of this music comes in a limited one-sided record – with music on side a, and a silkscreen of Peter Brotzmann artwork on side B! LP, Vinyl record album

Metronome QuintetMetronome Quintet Plays Swinging Mahagonny ... CD
Columbia/Sonorama (Germany), 1967. New Copy ... $3.99 16.99
A very hip group – handling some very hip material! There's a wonderful blend of instrumentation here – offbeat sax lines over cool vibes – all vamped along nicely by a tight piano-led rhythm section – all wrapped around jazz-based versions of tunes from Brecht & Weil's Mahaganny! The combo's a lesser-known one from the European modern scene of the 60s – and features sound library legend Bruno Spoerri on alto, tenor, and baritone sax – plus Ueli Staub on vibes, Martin Hugelshofer on piano, Felix Rogner on bass, and Rolf Banninger on drums! Spoerri re-arranged most of the tunes in the set – and then contributed his own, as well – and the whole thing's got a wonderfully offbeat feel that's as playful as it is modern – the kind of cool, crisp, creative jazz you'd always imagine from the European scene of the 60s – but hardly ever hear executed this perfectly. Titles include "Grundung Der Stadt Mahagonny", "Alabama Song", "Ach Bedenken Sie Herr Jakob Schmidt", "Metronome", "Lunatic Moon", and "Jaywalker". CD

Metropolitan Jazz AffairBird Of Spring ... CD
Infracom (Germany), 2007. Used ... $8.99
Wonderful work from a group who really live up to their name – and who manage to come up with a sound that's unlike any of the other jazzy club acts on the market! Metropolitan Jazz Affair is a great collaboration between Patchworks, keyboardist Benjamin Devigne, and a few other artists – working here in a mode that's got echoes of 70s funk, soul, and jazz – and possibly a slight undercurrent of contemporary club – but one that's relatively subtle overall. Most tunes have a fair bit of keyboards, mixed with trumpet, bass, and percussion – as well as vocals from Eric Duperray that often hit a sweetly soulful style – crackling a little like some lost soul vocalist from years back, but with a slight European inflection too. Some numbers hit a bit of the pulsating groove of other club jazz artists – but there's still a more song-based approach going on overall too – one that gives the album a tremendous amount of depth! The tracks are about 50/50 vocal and instrumental – and titles include "Fourmi Rouge", "Bird Of Spring", "Roaming", "Swagger", "Turned To Clay", "You Can Dig", "Sigh Of Dawn", "Day Dreaming", and "Find A Way". ✨✧ MetrosSweetest One ... CD
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest Northern Soul albums ever – completely great all the way through, and filled with songs that have been burning up dancefloors for years! The vocals are incredible – soaring harmonies that hold together perfectly, even when the grooves are hard and heavy – and the instrumentation is great too – handled by the Pied Piper team, who were kind of a Motown offshoot that featured Jack Ashford on vibes and percussion, Dave Hamilton and Ray Monette on guitar, and Joe Hunter on piano. Hunter and Ashford handled the arrangements – with a pitch-perfect sound that's completely sublime – sweet and grooving at the same time, and put together with the same kind of care you'd find at Motown – but with all the harder-edge qualities that always made indie work from Detroit so great. Every cut is a winner, and the set is the only full album ever done by the group – with cuts that include "Egyptian Love", "Till The End Of Time", "Since I Found My Baby", "Sweetest One", "Unlucky Sun", "I'll Never Forget You", "Do The Pied Piper", and "I'm With You All The Way". Great reissue – fully remastered from the original tapes – with new liner notes too! CD

Metropole/Redi (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 36.99
One of those wonderfully mysterious sound library albums from the Italian scene of the 70s – music penned by Rigol, performed by the Blue Sharks combo, and a set that could well be the product of some much bigger, better-known names! But regardless the origin, the music is great all the way through – very heavy on organ lines, in a way that starts with 60s mod, but also opens up into some of the cooler soundtrack styles of the 70s – so that you've got a great mix of groovers throughout, all served up with a mighty fresh vibe! At some level, we're tempted to call this one an organ-based take on the same piano territory of The Duke Of Burlington – and titles include "Sembrava Sincera", "Il Mago", "Quartiere Residenziale", "Strane Vacanze", "L'Ascensore", and "Il Campione". A greatly expanded version of this recent classic of 21st Century soul – complete with a full bonus disc of material! The original set came out a few years back, and grabbed our ears instantly – work by one of the best new downtempo acts we've heard in years – a British outfit with a really solid sense of soul and jazz, one that pushes way past simple studio tricks and production flourishes! Most of the tracks on this set have great female vocals – sweetly drifting amidst the slow beats and keyboard riffs with an approach that's clearly influenced by current American indie soul, but which also moves beyond it, into a more abstract, cosmically-oriented mode. Loads of great mellow moments – and titles include "All In Good Time", "Mercy", "Surreal Moments", "Abstract Blue", "Cost Of Livin", "When It Came", "Lady Sings", and "Perfect Season". Bonus CD features 14 more tracks that include "Ghosts", "Freefall", "What Do You Do", "Think About You", "Metropolis (Unknown Quantity mix)", "Medusa (Dynamic Syncopation mix)", "Lady Sings (live)", "Metropolis (live)", and "Perfect Season (Break Reform rmx)". A really new adventure from the funky combo Calibro 35 – a set that's a step away from some of their more cinematic-inspired projects, and one that has the group really honing their skills as a tight funky group! African rhythms, jazzy instrumentation, rock inspiration, and a motherlode of funky sound library grooves from two of the best British maestros working in the business! The album's an early 70s gem from the KPM catalog – one of the most sought-after records ever issued by the label – and like the rest, never really made for public sale back at the time! Despite that humble origin, though, the grooves here are right up there with the funkiest work coming out from that side of the Atlantic at the time – a brilliant post-colonial blend of acoustic percussion, electric keyboards, and a fair bit of fuzzy guitar – all presented with a stripped-down, no-nonsense approach to the rhythms that's often funkier than work by some of the bigger names in the genre. Titles include "Heavy Water", "Ice Breaker", "Solid Satin", "Punch Bowl", "Frozen Steam", and "Black Light" by Alan Parker – and "Swamp Fever", "Range Rover", "Survival", "Afro Waltz", "Heat Haze", "Rocking Rhino", and "Afro Metropolis" by John Cameron. Cut ChemistAudience's Listening ... LP
Warner, 2006. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $79.99
Cut Chemist brings his deep digging style out of the world of legendary mix sets and behind-the-scenes hip hop wizardry – finally out front with his first ever solo album – and it's as good as we'd hoped for! Sadly, you have to worry when a great hip hop DJ/producer gets a major label solo album in this sad day and age of expensive sample clearance, as they often feel a little bit neutered by the system. Never fear in this case. Chem builds his signature eclectic craft around samples – some fairly obvious and some quite surprising – with occasional live instrumentation and a few appearances by topshelf underground MCs. The sounds are far too diverse to nail in a sentence or two, but they run from a catchy hip hop thump, to some Brazil-sampling groovers, to funky avant garde bits. Too many newer beatmakers opt for an obtuse, laptop-derived, barely musical approach. All the more reason to cherish Cut Chemist! Tracks include "Motivational Speaker", "(My 1st) Big Break", "The Lift", "The Garden", "Spat", "What's The Attitude" feat Hymnal, "Metrorail Thru Space", "Storm" feat Edan & Mr Lif, "2266 Cambridge" feat Thes One, "Spoon", "A Peak In Time" and "The Audience Is Speaking Theme Song". Lars GullinLars Gullin Vol 9 – Summertime 1954/1956 ... CD
Dragon (Sweden), Mid 50s. Used ... $8.99
A mix of very rare and more familiar work from the legendary Lars Gullin – really showing a lot of growth here in the mid 50 scene in Sweden! The first four tracks on the album are especially great – some very unusually-titled tunes cut for Metronome Records – with a modern-styled septet that features Ake Persson on trombone, Putte Wickman on clarinet, Bjarne Nerem on tenor, and Bengt Hallberg on piano – working through some killer Gullin compositions that have lots of corners and angles – tunes that include "Primula Veris", "Laburnum Vulgare", "Lotus Corniculatus", and "Galium Verum". Next are a handful of tracks also done for Metronome, but issued in the US by Atlantic – although on records that are quite rare anyway – septet, quintet, and octet material that includes "Fedja", "Ma", "How About You", "So What", "Always", and "Perntz". And last up are some tunes that have Lars working with the group of Gosta Theselius, but which don't appear to be ones issued on the more-familiar Swedish Jazz album of 1956 – cut during the same year, though, on titles that include "Summertime", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Yesterdays", and "A Foggy Day". 14 tracks, and nearly 80 minutes of music! Only the second album from Gypsy, but one that really has the group opening up their wings to soar – especially on the longer tunes that really feature some nicely freewheeling interplay between organ and guitar! Yet even on the shorter cuts, the sound between the two is great too – driven on by some rhythms that feature very tasty use of congas, in a way that might draw some slight comparison to Santana, although these guys maybe have some more mid-American elements in the mix too, almost a dash of light Allman Brothers at times! Whatever the comparisons, though, the whole thing is great – a really under-discovered gem that deserves to be in the bigger pantheon of the time – with cuts that include "Here In The Garden", "Blind Man", "Reach Out Your Hand", "Around You", and "As Far As You Can See". Before the book, we'd never heard of Soul City before – but it's clear that the planning and support for the project were huge at the time, before political forces brought the whole thing to a standstill just as it got going – a tale that's spun out here in a richly detailed narrative that provides for a compelling, if heartbreaking, read. Quincy Jones was already making quite a name for himself overseas, even very early in his career – as you'll hear on these two different Swedish sessions recorded in 1953! Both of them feature the young arranger at the height of his early powers – really creating magic between all the players – letting the rhythm groove, and the soloists step out – but also making the whole thing gel together wonderfully with a soulful sense of color and tone. The first batch of tracks feature both Art Farmer and Clifford brown on trumpets – with Swedish players Ake Persson on trombone, Lars Gullin on baritone, and Bent Hallberg on piano – on "Stockholm Sweetnin", "Falling In Love With You", "Scuse These Bloos", and "Lover Come Back To Me". The last four tracks are with a similar group – but just with Farmer on trumpet, and Jimmy Cleveland with Ake Persson on trombone – on the titles "Pogo Stick", "Liza", "Jones' Bones", and "Sometimes I'm Happy". BMG, 2021. Sealed Gatefold ... $19.99
We've loved the music of soul singer Ledisi since her first self-released album back in the 90s – and since that time, she's matured even more as a vocalist – to a point where she can easily take on the music of Nina Simone with all the glory it deserves! This special set features Ledisi singing with accompaniment from the Metropole Orkest and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra – each of whom bring a sense of fullness, but in different ways – as Ledisi stretches out the tunes with the kind of sophistication and richness that Nina might have done – but in a voice that's all her own. The set features guests appearances from Lizz Wright and Alice Smith – but Ledisi hardly needs them at all, as she's very firmly in the lead – on titles that include "Feeling Good", "Wild Is The Wind", "Work Song", "Four Women", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", and "I'm Going Back Home". The set features further chapters in Janelle's Metropolis story – but apart from that overarching structure, and cool notes that situate the singer as some future cultural criminal, the overall vibe is tight funky soul – at a level that not only lives up to all of Monae's sparkling promise from before, but which also finds a great way to bring out the best elements of all the guests! There's plenty of funky numbers here that stand wonderfully well on their own, but the whole thing works even better as a unified set – with titles that include "Primetime", "Givin Em What They Love", "Queen", "Electric Lady", "Look Into My Eyes", "It's Code", "Ghetto Woman", "Victory", "Dorothy Dandrige Eyes", and "What An Experience". A strange one, and from this perspective, it seems like a crazy decision to pair modernist tenorist Sonny Rollins with a set of large brassy arrangements. Oddly, though, the idea works, and works nicely – as Rollins' edgey solos cut through the heavy arrangements with ease, creating some angular counterpoint and a tight little space to make his own sound. The group was conducted by Ernie Wilkins, and the flipside of the album features Rollins playing in a small trio with the great Henry Grimes on bass (who also played with Rollins on some of his best sessions from the time!) Stereolab's third album for Elektra – continuing their wonderful brand of space age pop in the 90s, and still some of the most exciting music to come from a major label at the time! Many would argue that Emperor Tomato Ketchup is the band's finest moment, and for good reason. If you've dug the work on Umiliani's famous album To-Day's Sound, you'll be even more blown away by what you hear here – some really spare, stark electronic sounds that seem to not only rival the best early analogue experiments of the postwar years, but also seem to preface later experiments in post-punk, techo, and indie electronics – all while retaining the charm we've always loved in Umiliani's music! Some tunes are straightforward and groovy, yet still pretty offbeat – and others get quite outside, often using the studio and production elements as an equal force in the music. Titles include "Non Mollare", "Produzione", "Mondo In Crisi", "Metronomo E Cuore", "Pendolo E Angoscia", "Mafia Oggi" and "Sovversione". LP, Vinyl record album

William Julius Wilson & Richard P TaubThere Goes The Neighborhood – Racial, Ethnic, & Class Tensions In Four Chicago Neighborhoods & Their Meaning For America ... Book
Vintage, 2006. New Copy ... $5.99 14.95
A fascinating look at our fair city of Chicago – a city of neighborhoods, which are often very separate and divided – as you'll discover in this detailed look at four of them by William Julius Wilson and Richard P Taub! The volume follows on Chicago classics like Black Metropolis, but looks at things from a more contemporary process – as the evolving areas of the city continue to be a microcosm of larger issues in the country, which is obviously one of the directions the authors are taking the project. Research was very detailed – done with the assistance of a number of graduate students – but the information is nicely distilled, in a combination of ethnographic and sociological methods that combine data and dialogue. The project is great – and our main complaint as Chicagoans is that it's just lacking in a map and addresses – but that's something that will hardly bother a reader outside of the Windy City. 227 pages, softcover. VariousInfracom 30 Years – We Couldn't Save The Planet, But We'd Still Like To Save Your Soul ... LP
Infracom (Germany), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 34.99
It's hard to believe that the German Infracom label has been around for 30 years – maybe because the label was so future-thinking at the start, they helped set the tone for so much music to come! And if you're not hip to Infracom, the collection's a chance to dig the label in all its glory – as the set is filled with cosmic soul and jazzy club tracks that still stand as some of the hippest work to come from overseas in the past few decades – music that we've dug for years at Dusty Groove, served up in a package that really does justice to the label's legacy! Titles include "Freedom" by Gabriele Poso, "Hot Pot" by Mop Mop, "Who's Sorry Now" by Nekta, "Smoke & Regret" by Rime, "The Accessory" by Taxi, "Driver (Joash rmx)" by Matthias Vogt Trio, "Herbie's Delight" by Valique, "Love Is A State Of Mind" by Jhelisa, "Celebration Of Life" by Woodland Conclave, "You Can Dig" by Metropolitan Jazz Affair, "Tears" by Re:Jazz, "Calling" by Aromabar, "La Seule Fleur Dans Le Jardin" by Kosma, and "Something's Missing" by Dublex. ✨✧ Freddie HubbardAbove & Beyond ... CD
Metropolitan, 1982. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real treat for fans of Freddie Hubbard! The back cover has a quote from Freddie that says "This is my best playing on record" – and while we'll admit that we're still partial to some of his older studio work, we've got to admit that this live set from 1982 is an extremely valuable addition to Freddie's catalog. The set was recorded in San Francisco, with a quartet that includes Billy Childs on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The tracks are all long and very open-ended – and they feature Freddie blowing in a complicated creative vein that you rarely get on studio sessions from the past 20 years. Titles include "Byrdlike", "Little Sunflower", "Thermo", and "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise". CD

Tramp (Germany), 2023. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
You might know these guys under their previous name of Kutimangoes – one that's dropped maybe in part because there's a shift in the music here to a slightly different style! Where Kutimangoes explored a heavy dose of Afro Funk on their records, Sunborn take off from the roots and move things into a much more fluid sense of expression – often percolating rhythms that have both acoustic and electric elements, in support of a superb hornline that moves with a sense of majesty that really makes the album stand out – giving the whole thing an instant sense of power and pride! Guests include Caio Marcio and Bigyuki – and titles include "Mankind", "Apple Blossom", "Night Sweats", "Dancing In The Dark", "Metropolis", "Beach Chase", "Echoes", and "Under The Same Sky". Salsoul/Gold Legion, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet collection of grooves from the legendary Salsoul label – easily one of the hippest imprints on the New York scene of the 70s! Salsoul's grooves go way beyond the usual disco – crafted with roots that go back to soul and salsa of the earlier part of the decade – and often mixed to perfection with a sound that holds up strongly, even on a crowded dancefloor! This package features ten of the best-remembered gems from the label – most in long mixes that echo their strong popularity as 12" single – titles that include "Doctor Love" by First Choice, "Runaway" by The Salsoul Orchestra with Loleatta Holloway, "Jingo" by Candido, "Dreamin" by Loleatta Holloway, "By The Way You Dance" by Bunny Sigler, "Love Is You" by Carol Williams, "Dance A Little Bit Closer" by Charo, "I Love New York" by Metropolis, and "Rio De Janeiro" by Gary Criss. Metropolis, 2013. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Formica may seem like an everyday surface to some – but at the time of its creation, it was a pretty revolutionary development – one that allowed household and business spaces to step free from longer-term care – giving the workers and residents lots more time to pursue their hopes and dreams! That bright promise of Formica is presented beautifully here – in a lovely history of the product, complete with dozens of vintage images that range from magazine ads to promotional flyers – to some higher-end projects in Formica from the art world! The book's beautiful – as stylish as an interior design magazine from the 60s – with a special color by color section in the middle, including writings by John Updike, Margarate Atwood, and others – on pages that are also perforated and can be folded! The first half of the book is in English, and awash with these images and text – and the second half offers more images, and text in six other languages. 408 pages, softcover, and beautiful color throughout! Metromedia, Early 70s. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Although we shouldn't, we've always had a soft spot for this groovy rock combo. Maybe it's their appearance in Midnight Cowboy, or their brief association with John Lennon – but we think it's mostly because they've always had a good funk sensibility, even when they're playing rock, as on this LP. This one's got the great breakbeat cut "Mongoose", plus a few other nice ones, and it's darn tough to find! LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic early trio album from pianist Tommy Flanagan – a set that was originally recorded overseas by Metronome Records, hence the title – and part of a long tradition of Tommy making some of his best music for non-US labels! Flanagan's already a hell of a craftsman here on the piano – able to mix boppish sharpness with the strong sense of lyricism that would grace some of his later work – in a trio that features great bass from Wilbur Little, and a pre-Coltrane Elvin jones on drums. The set's a great early example of Flanagan's special touch on the keys – and titles include "Skal Brothers", "Verdandi", "Dalarna", "Little Rock", "Eclypso", and "Beat's Up". 80s Swedish pressing of material that was issued in the US on the Overseas album – with three unissued bonus tracks. Collectables/Atlantic, 1956/1958. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of Europe's greatest jazz musicians ever – captured here on two rare albums from the 50s! Although Lars Gullin was mostly a baritone player, his rich talent on the instrument won him many accolades during the postwar years – and he recorded a huge amount of albums, both here in the US, and home in his native Sweden. These two sessions were originally issued in Sweden on Metronome, but are offered here in the versions issued by Atlantic in the US during the late 50s. Both records are some of Gullin's best straight material from the time – and they feature him swinging hard and straight-ahead, in a perfect setting made up of some of Sweden's finest players. Titles include "Always", "After 8pm", "Half Nelson", "So What", "Fedja", and "Perntz". Great to have back out again – and what a deal! Metromedia/Sundazed, 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The fantastic debut of Gypsy – a group who blend wonderful harmonies with really well-crafted inspiration – very much in the jazz-inspired jamming of some of the headier California groups, like Spirit or Santana at their best! The group use a swirling blend of organ and guitar next to their really beautiful vocals – warm and sweet at some of the best moments, but never in a way that ever feels like soft rock – given the intensity of the instrumentation! The album was issued on the Metromedia label, and never got the attention it would have deserved had it hit the racks from a company like Columbia or Warner – but it's every bit as great as some of their giants from the time, with titles that include "Last December", "Man Of Reason", "Third Eye", "Tomorrow Is The Last To Be Heard", "Here In My Loneliness", "Dead & Gone", "Dream If You Can", "Decisions", and "Gypsy Queen". An obscure set of spacey rock tracks – done in a way that reminds us a bit of very early work by ELO, with an expansive set of backings touched by solo work on keyboards and guitar, and some flanged-out vocals that really sound great. The tracks are of varying length – and some of them are all instrumental and quite jamming, not really funky, but with a nice structured sound that gives them a bit of a groove. ✨✧ WireSend ... CD
Pink Flag/Revolver, 2002/2003. Used ... Out Of Stock
In pretty much any bio of the pioneering art punk band Wire you'll read about how between 1977 and 1979, the group made three of the best, most forward looking rock albums of the era. First they perfected punk rock (Pink Flag), a year later they opened the doors to the more melodic new wave (Chairs Missing), and followed that up by introducing experimental electronics and metronomic beats (154), clearing the way for the aggro-post-punk-dance music of the early 80s. 10 years from now, there will probably be an addendum to all of those bios, stating that in 2002/2003 Wire finally returned to form – and they were as great as they ever were! We love our hyperbole around here, there's no denying that, but we really can't overstate how amazing Send is for Wire fans. As much as they've been around in various forms, Colin Newman and co. have not sounded this vital since 1979. None of the million billion indie rock kids emulating the old boys are even in the same universe, despite what your local hipster papers and zines might say. The album is basically a collection of the comeback EPs Wire self-released in 2002 – Read And Burn 1 & 2 – plus four newer, equally ferocious tracks. The first half kind of serves as the logical 2002/3 equivalent of their razor melody guitar sound of the late 70s, and the second half adds the aggro/electro beat-driven stuff that was bastardized by others (and at times by Wire themselves) all through the 80s and 90s. The whole thing is consistent, aggressive as all-get-out, and a stunningly loud comeback that we never saw coming. It's all the more rewarding because of it. "In The Art Of Stopping", "Mr. Marx's Table", "Being Watched", "The Agfers Of Kodack", "Nice Streets Above", "Spent", "Read And Burn", "You Can't Leave Now", "Half Eaten", "99.9." CD

✨✧ VariousImpressed With Gilles Peterson 2 – Rare, Classic, & Unique Modern Jazz From Britain 1963-1974 ... CD
Universal (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
One of the headiest collections of jazzy grooves you'll ever hope to find – and one of the greatest, too! The tracks on the set are all hand-picked by Gilles "golden ears" Peterson – and together, they represent some of the cream of the crop of the British jazz scene at the end of the 60s and start of the 70s! At the time, British musicians were moving away from the tighter formations used in the immediate post-war years – into a realm that was steeped in the experimental and post-colonial influences that were running through London at the time. And while you might expect that to mean that the tracks are "out", or avant, they're not – as all tunes are wonderful groovers that catch our ears right away, and hold our attention with a sense of joyous expression that's so often missing in recent jazz. The package features 10 tracks in all – most of which have never been reissued – and titles include "Ursula" by Michael Garrick Septet, "Don't Fall Off The Bridge" by Tubby Hayes & Paul Gonsalves, "Starless & Bible Black" by Stan Tracey, "Metropolis (part IX)" by Mike Westbrook, "Will You Walk A Little Faster" by Niel Ardley, "A Street In Bombay" by Amanico D'Silva, "Timewind" by Mike Taylor Remembered, "The Hipster" by Harold McNair, and "Le Dejuner Sur L'Herbe" by The New Jazz Orchestra. Warner, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
Cut Chemist brings his deep digging style out of the world of legendary mix sets and behind-the-scenes hip hop wizardry – finally out front with (can you believe this?) his first ever solo album!
