MetersCabbage Alley ... LP
Reprise, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A really cool cooker from The Meters – recorded during their post-Josie run for Warner Brothers, but with this tight vibe that still holds all their funky New Orleans roots intact! The sound is a bit more expanded here – not in a commercial way, but just in a style that has the group trying out more things – some interesting rhythms, offbeat guitar passages, and maybe even more of a vocal presence – although it's clearly the drums and basslines that are still driving the whole thing along! Production is by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn – again in that great style they were hitting at Warner – and titles include "Soul Island", "Flower Song", "Gettin Funkier All the Time", "Do the Dirt", "Cabbage Alley", and "Stay Away" – plus a version of Neil Young's "Birds"! Killer funk from one of the best-ever bands of the genre! "Cissy Strut" has some killer stone cold choppy guitars, with a sound that was imitated often, but never matched! "Here Comes" is a rolling organ-driven groove – bubbling along at a chunky funky pace! 7-inch, Vinyl record

MetersLive At Rozy's (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
REG Associates (Japan), 1976. Used ... $11.99
A rare little set from The Meters – recorded in their home turf of New Orleans in the mid 70s, but with a groove that's as raw as their Josie Records albums of the 60s! The vibe here is a great change from the polished production the group were getting over at Warner Brothers – and the concert setting allows the group to really stretch out on some numbers – taking them into instrumental jamming territory you never would have heard on a two minute single from years back! Instrumentation includes keyboards from Art Neville, guitar from Leo Nocentelli, bass from George Porter, drums from Zig Modeliste, and percussion from Cyril Neville – and almost all group members vocalise on a few chorus moments. Titles include long takes of "A Minor", "Wildflower", and "Feel So Good" – plus the shorter numbers "Chicken Strut" and "Mardi Gras Mambo". CD

Josie/Rounder, Late 60s. Used ... $2.99
Seminal work from The Meters – and an album that's essential for just about any collection of old school funk! The record's a blueprint for grooves that have been copied for generations to come – yet nobody does it better than these Crescent City kings – working here with a sound that's lean, mean, and completely on the money! The mix of organ, guitar, and bad-walking rhythms is completely sublime throughout – and made even better by massive production from the team of Marshall Sehorn and Allen Toussaint. Imagine taking the best instrumental funk 45s from your collection, then playing them back to back – and you'll get a good idea of the solid sound of this landmark set. Titles include "Funky Miracle", "Oh Calcutta", "Yeah You're Right", "Pungee", "Look-Ka Py Py", "Dry Spell", "Little Old Money Maker", "The Mob", "9 Til 5", "Rigor Mortis", and "This Is My Last Affair". Josie, Late 60s. Very Good- ... Just Sold Out!
One of the greatest albums ever in the history of funk – the first album by The Meters, and virtually the blueprint for countless funk records to come! The album's bubbling over with classics – all hard-hitting instrumentals played by the group in an effortlessly tight style, produced to perfection by Allen Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn in their classic 60s New Orleans style. A blinding masterpiece of bass, drums, and scratchy guitar – with tracks that include "Cardova", "Cissy Strut", "Sophisticated Cissy", "Here Comes The Meter Man", "Ease Back", "Ann", "6V6 La", and "Live Wire". MetersNew Directions ... LP
Warner, 1977. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
The Meters take their Crescent City groove in a slightly different direction – giving things a warmer, sunnier feel than their previous records – and bringing in a fair bit more vocals, too – yet still keeping all the right funky elements at the bottom! The move is a bit like that made by Allen Toussaint when he was helping out so many other artists in LA during the 70s – a tightness that's different than indie funk, but also a great way to evolve the New Orleans sound past its more regional roots! In other words, don't expect The Meters on Josie – but appreciate the record as a great bit of mainstream funk – one that has the Neville Brothers doing some of their best vocals as The Meters lay into a groove. Titles include "No More Okey Doke", "Funkify Your Life", "Give It What You Can", "My Name Up In Lights", "We Got The Kind Of Love", and "Be My Lady". LP, Vinyl record album

Brilliantly funky! This is the greatest album they cut for Warner Brothers – and it's one of the few that ever really approaches the genius of their early work for Josie. The record features the incredible breakbeat cut "Just Kissed My Baby" – worth the price of the album alone – plus other nice ones like "Jungle Man", "Africa", "What'cha Say", and the perennial New Orleans favorite "Hey Pocky A Way". The Meters are struttin plenty here – stepping out with those hard, tight New Orleans grooves that practically changed the way funk sounded in the 60s! The album's one of their classic trio for Josie Records – all of which are sublime – and like the others, it's got this massive blend of whomping rhythms, bubbling Hammond, and scratchy guitar lines that make all the tunes plenty darn infectious. All tracks are great groovers – and titles include "Same Old Thing", "Joog", "Chicken Strut", "Liver Splash", "Hand Clapping Song", "Hey Last Minute", "Tippi-Toes", and "Ride Your Pony". ✨✧ MetersTrick Bag ... LP
Reprise, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet Cali set from The Meters – one that loses a bit of their rougher roots, yet still holds onto plenty of funk at the same time! By the mid 70s, the New Orleans soul sound had broken out of the underground, was residing happily in mainstream LA. Allen Toussaint already produced a bucketful of albums for Warner Brothers, and The Meters themselves are working in a crossover territory that has them touring with the Rolling Stones and hitting a whole new range of college-type audiences. The group's smoothed things out considerably, but still manages to funk nicely at the best moments – in a warmer way than during the Josie Records years, but still with a groove that's much deeper than most of their contemporaries. Titles are a much a "trick bag" as the title – with a cover of Earl King's "Trick Bag" that features guest vocals by Earl, a remake of "(Doodle Loop) The World is a Little Bit Under the Weather", one of their best from the Josie days, a cover of "Honky Tonk Woman", which we can only assume was played on tour with The Stones – plus the original cuts "Chug A Lug", "Mister Moon", and "Find Yourself". Warner/Soulmusic.com (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 6 CDs ... Out Of Stock
A massive package of funky music – and maybe one that no home should be without – as the set includes all the classic Josie Records and Warner Brothers albums by legendary New Orleans funk group The Meters – plus a fair bit of bonus tracks too! The Josie albums are incredible – a lean, powerful blend of funky drums, bass, guitar, and organ – almost the New Orleans answer to Booker T & The MGs, but with a sound that's far funkier overall – and which continues to bring new ears to the magic of The Meters as the years go by! Their Warner work is a bit fuller – as the group were part of a big wave of Nola talent to get the nod from LA – which means that The Meters were able to add in vocals, experiment with arrangements, use additional instrumentation – yet all without ever losing that core groove that made them so great! This package is the first time all the records have been brought together, and many are presented here in the "expanded edition" versions with bonus tracks – which makes for a whopping 116 titles on 6CDs – bonus tracks, plus the full albums The Meters, Look Ka Py Py, Struttin, Cabbage Alley, Rejuvenation, Fire On The Bayou, Trick Bag, and New Directions – plus some singles too! Budos BandBudos Band ... CD
Daptone, 2005. Used ... $5.99
A brilliant mix of Afro and deep funk styles – the kind of grooves you'd get if Fela Kuti hung out with The Meters in the late 60s! Budos Band recall the genius of 90s deep funk combo The Daktaris – and have a similar love of older African rhythms touched by a newer indie funk sound – a complexity in the group's well-arranged horn parts, but a simplicity to their rhythms that makes the album cook like some of our favorite classics from years back. Sax and trumpet lines are mixed nicely with heavy percussion and a fair bit of organ at the bottom – creating a murky groove that has a bit of New Orleans in the mix, but also has most of the instruments stepping along with the rhythm – in a very cool take on the Africa 70 sound. Tracks are all instrumental, and all incredible – and the record's one of the freshest we've heard from the deep funk underground in years – a second-generation set that gets way past simple copycat funk and into its own unique groove! Titles include "Budos Theme", "Ghost Walk", "King Charles", "Eastbound", "Across The Atlantic", "Up From The South", "TIBWF", and "Monkey See Monkey Do". CD

Dr JohnRemedies/Desitively Bonnaroo ... CD
Atlantic/BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99
Two funky classics from Dr John – back to back in a single set! First up is Remedies, one of the records that made Dr John a legend back in the day – a set that steps off from New Orleans roots into a world of weird funk, tripped-out sounds, and lots and lots of super-heavy grooves! The album's got a nicely exploratory vibe – as the first side features shorter funky cuts, but the second half really stretches out, and features a side-long track that has the Doctor at his most freewheeling – mixing deep currents from soul and blues with all the great ear for studio techniques he'd developed over the years – fused into a sound that's almost a fantasy of a soulful subculture in the swamps. Titles include "Loop Garoo", "Wash Mama Wash", "What Goes Around Comes Around", "Mardi Gras Day", and "Chippy Chippy" – plus the side-long "Angola Anthem". Desitively Bonnaroo is filled with tight funky work from Dr John – a second collaboration with producer Allen Toussaint, and a set that follows strongly on their Right Place record of the year before! The groove's not as messed-up as on the first few Atlantic records by the Doctor – but in it's place is a sweet electric funk mode, kind of an update on 60s New Orleans grooves – handled here by The Meters and a host of other key players from the Crescent City scene! Toussaint's production and arrangements are tight, but never slick at all – still much earthier than the later work, especially that on Warner Brothers, that was handled by the producer. And the tunes have a good focus that keeps Dr John on track lyrically – even though we'll admit that our main love of this record comes from the keyboards, bass, and funky drums! Titles include "Stealin", "What Comes Around (Goes Around)", "Mos' Scocious", "Rite Away", "R U 4 Real", "Let's Make A Better World", "Sing Along Song", "Go Tell The People", "Quitters Never Win", and "Can't Git Enuff". Way more than just a sound check, as the Du-Rites play here live – at an undisclosed location in Brooklyn – in a set that's still got some vocals from J-Zone and Pablo Martin, but which also really seems to showcase the full funky action of the group as a quartet – with lots of heavy riffing on guitar and keyboards! The sound is maybe an imagined East LA take on the sound of The Meters – with all the chunky rhythms and bold instrumental elements of that New Orleans group, but some unusual production edges and slightly more exotic phrasing that really seems to move the groove. Titles include "Gamma Ray Funk", "The Man With The Golden Tooth", "Mr Porter", "Bug Juice", "The Chief & I", "Neckbones", "Pookie's Dead", and "Amsterdam Ave Suite". LP, Vinyl record album

One of Funk Inc's greatest albums – and a really tight batch of funky tunes given some stellar production by David Axelrod! The band's a bit tighter than on earlier releases – leaving behind the hard jazz-jam sound for a more together soul-oriented one, heard to best effect on the album's enduring classic, "Goodbye, So Long" – a rolling funky tune that features vocals on the chorus, and an unbelievably catchy instrumental sound that you might recognize instantly from its use as a sample over the years. The rest of the record's just as great – and the band runs through The Meters' classic "Message From The Meters", Barry White's funky "I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Babe", and a great rendition of the electric jazz classic "The Hill Where The Lord Hides". Organ funk from the midwest scene – raw, tightly grooving instrumentals and the first full length release from Ohio's Jive Turkeys – numbers that sounds right in step with the 70s instro funk of The Meters and the best of the contemporary indie funk scenes! The group is a four piece – organ, drums, bass and guitar – keeping it simple, raw and funky. As hinted at on the on the couple of the stellar 45s that led up to Bread & Butter, they work well in both a slower cooking, Booker T indebted groove or a fast & furious,post-JBs style. Simple, straight up funky soul instrumentals is the order of the day, and these Jive Turkeys bring it! The set's a perfect batch of mid 60s garage – early genius from The Litter – one of those groups who may well have had more power at their start than they ever did in later years. The songs pack a solid punch, yet are plenty tuneful too – with organ lines soaring right alongside the guitar, all wrapped up together in fuzzy glory. Nite-LitersA-Nal-Y-Sis ... CD
RCA/Dusty Groove, 1973. New Copy ... $7.99 12.99
A masterpiece of hard and heavy funk – from one of the best bands of the early 70s! The Nite Liters were a legendary funky combo that provided the backing for some of New Birth's best albums – but on their own, they were even funkier, and had a sound that was part JBs, part Meters, and all funky! This album may well be the group's best – their last for RCA, and a set that really has them honing their edge incredibly. The drums are amazing, the keyboards great, and the horns have this quality that's both complex, yet right on the money – making for a richness in sound that really sets the group apart from their contemporaries. A few singers from The New Birth provide chorus vocals on a few tracks – but most of the set is instrumental, and the record's one we'd gladly stack next to our Meters albums on Josie or JBs classics on People. Every track's a gem – and titles include "Drumology", "Excuse Me While I Do My Thing", "Serenade for a Jive Turkey", "Happy Hooker", "Craaashing", "Damn", "Pee-Foul", and a sweet cover of "Valdez in the Country" that's been sampled at least once over the years! One of the best compilations of New Orleans funk we've ever seen! Sure, the reissue market is always filled with stuff from the Crescent City – but so many New Orleans compilations are cheapo knock-offs, designed to cash in on the drunk Jazz & Heritage crowd, or they're simplistic sets with the same 10 tracks over and over again. This wonderful batch of tunes was put together by the folks at Soul Jazz – legendary for their work in putting together serious compilations to please the novice and expert alike – and it's got some of the best overall work we've ever seen in trying to pin down New Orleans funk. Sure, there may be a few cuts on here that you've got on other sets – but there's also a lot that you won't have, and the quality of the production makes even the familiar material sparkle again. Sure Fire Soul Ensemble are tighter than ever, and have really perfected a trademark sound – a style that's got the breaking drums of a vintage funky 45, the moody horns of an Ethio funk group, and the kind of organ and keyboard lines that would be right at home on a vintage album by The Meters! The blend is wonderful, and carried off to perfection here – touched with some added percussion and other surprises over the course of the record – but all with this lean, sharp instrumental style that never needs any vocals, nor any other added elements to hold our interest! The set begins with a cover of the Roy Ayers tune "Aragon" – then moves through originals that include "Build Bridges", "Roxy Funk", "Gloria's Anthem", "El Nino", "Sucker Punch", "Costa Blues", and "Campus Life". ✨✧ VariousAin't It Funky Now! – Flat Out Funk From The Jazz Brotherhood ... CD
BGP (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Jazzy 45s galore – and a huge dip into the vaults of Prestige Records! This tasty set brings together 18 classics recorded in the heyday of the jazz funk years at Prestige – the late 60s and early 70s, a time when the soul jazz sounds of previous years were being forged into a leaner, meaner, harder-hitting groove. And although the LP was the growing format during these days, there was actually a heck of a lot of great work issued on 45s – still spinning strong with the jukebox crowds in the clubs and tap rooms, and still getting major play on radio stations, where the single was still king. The set features many 45 mixes of funky classics that you might know from LPs – and intersperses them with some other more obscure numbers pulled from full albums – making for an all-solid, all-funky set of tracks from one of the hippest jazz labels ever! Titles include "Fire Eater" by Rusty Bryant, "Don't Knock My Love" by Idris Muhammad, "Jungle Strut" by Gene Ammons, "Express Yourself" by Idris Muhammad, "Right On" by Boogaloo Joe Jones, "Who's Gonna Take The Weight" by Melvin Sparks, "Sing A Simple Song" by Charles Earland, "Son Of Man" by Houston Person, "Listen Here (part 1)" by Freddie McCoy, "Black Talk (part 1)" by Charles Earland, "Message From The Meters" by Leon Spencer, "Reelin With The Feeling" by Charles Kynard, "I Want You Back" by Harold Mabern, and "Thank You (part 1)" by Melvin Sparks. ✨✧ Budos BandBudos Band ... LP
Daptone, 2005. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ M-TetTotal Non-Stop Action ... LP
Funk Night, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The funky M-Tet combo add in just a slight bit of extra grease to the sound that made their debut so tight – occasional horn flairs and a bit of congas, plus maybe a bit more fuzz on the guitar! Yet the core sound is very much in that mix of organ, guitar, bass, and drums that make these guys a 21st Century evolution of the sound of The Meters – but cooked up in the Bay Area instead of Nola, where the vibe is a bit different – and there's a bit more room to play around with the groove! As such, the album balances sharp old school funk numbers with some fuzzier, freakier tunes – a good balance that never has these guys sounding too much like just another retro funk act – on titles that include "Katrin's Deli", "Gotta Be With You", "You Should See The Other Guy", "That Old Hammond Organ", "Vamp Oakland", and "Pinch Hitter". Jerry SolomonPast The 20th Century ... LP
Modern Harmonic, Early 70s. New Copy ... $14.99 24.99
The title might be a bit reversed – because there's hardly anything 21st Century at all about this music – and at some level, it almost feels as if Jerry Solomon is going back in time – at least within the parameters of his own life! The songs often have this weird, almost child-like approach – with spare instrumentation that might include toy piano, chimes, percussion, and guitar – the last of which is almost never used in a straightforward manner. Jerry sings, but with this almost dirge-like quality – in a way that instantly makes all the tunes sound very weird and offbeat right from the start. The titles give a good idea of the spirit – and include "Denied Of All Human Life", "I Just Don't Fit This Modern Age", "A Good Old Fashioned Date", "They Came From Everywhere", and "Past The 20th Century". Columbia album that features the original recordings of these 2 "Mikrophonie" compositions – one for tam tam, microphones, filters, and potentiometers; the other for choir, hammond organ, and ring modulators. Both tracks are excellent examples of Stockhausen's best work with electronics in the 60s – and the recordings of both pieces were supervised by Stockhausen himself. LP, Vinyl record album
