✨✧ MF DoomOperation Doomsday ... LP
Metal Face, 1999. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The first full length from MF Doom – a record that set the standard for underground hip hop to come! On this modern classic, Doom caps off the 90s with more jazzy soul in the beats, and some semblance of straightforward rhyme mastery from both Doom & his guests – taken to the outer limits! What really pushes this one into legendary status are how well he works with creaky comic adventure samples – using them as the genesis of Doom's metal face supervillain persona. Looking back, the set is clearly the building blocks for deeper insanity to come – but the sense of structure may well make it his best album ever! Includes "Doomsday", "Rhymes Like Dimes" feat Cucumber Slice, "The Finest" feat Tommy Gun, "Go With The Flow", "Tick Tick", "Hey!", "The Mic", "Dead Bent", "?" feat Kurious and much more – including all of the classic skits (yeah, we said it, classic skits, creative sci fi sample genius that are creative as the proper tracks) – with 19 tracks in all. ✨✧ KMDBlack Bastards ... LP
Metal Face/Rhymesayers, 1994. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A legendary record from KMD – the group's second album, which was unissued at the time because their label had an issue with the now-famous cover image! The set is every bit as fantastic as their first – with some of that strong influence from jazz that marked their music as a real standout at the time – but also some raw elements that really make us wonder where they would have gone, had they kept on together as a trio – if not for the untimely early death of Dingilizwe Dumile! Yet, as history shows, that moment spawned the MF Doom persona of group member Zevlove X (Dumile's brother) – who would go on to form a legacy of his own. The whole thing's great, even without that mini-history lesson – and titles include the classics "Plumskinnzz" and "What A Ni**a Know" – plus "Get-U-Now", "Sweet Premium Wine", "Black Bastards", "Constipated Monkey", and "Gimme". Heavily funky sci fi weirdness from the Metal Face archives! If you dig Doom beats – and why wouldn't ya?! – this is pretty prime stuff. They come nice and heavy, with all the rolling soul sample loops, peppered with odball dialog snippets from horror and sci fi flicks here and there. The titles are unimportant, but here's a few any way: "Agrimony", "Arabic Gum", "Bergamot Wild", "Dragon's Blood Resin", "Elder Blossoms", "Star Anis", "Four Thieves Vinegar", "Galangal Root", "Spikenard", "Hyssop" and more. 16 tracks in all. ✨✧ MetallicaRide The Lightning ... LP
Megaforce, 1984. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time – a pioneering blast of mid 80s thrash from Metallica at an early peak! Say what you will about Metallica's later career triumphs and failures, there's no overstating how huge their impact was on metal and hard rock early on, and their best few records are incredible to this day. This may well be they're very best album – the culmination of a couple years of slow-building word-of-mouth reputation-building for genre work that can't be praised highly enough. One metal classic after another: "Fight Fire With Fire", "Ride The Lightning", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Fade To Black", "Trapped Under Ice", "Escape", "Creeping Death" and "The Call Of Ktulu". Capitol, 1977. Very Good+ ... Out Of Stock
An incredibly lovely record from Kraftwerk – fashioned along the same suite-like style as Radio Activity, and served up with some haunting and charming tunes throughout! The electronics are quite spare, yet very thoughtful – never a note out of place, as the quartet build their careful efforts together to create a tapestry of surprisingly warm sounds – using just a bit of vocals in really great ways, and almost prefacing a whole generation of UK and Euro pop to come – yet without any of their schmaltz! Titles include "Europe Endless", "Hall Of Mirrors", "Abzung", "Franz Schubert", and "Showroom Dummies" – not to mention the awesome title track and electro break number "Metal On Metal". A mindblowing album, and a record that was an instant classic from the moment it was released – and then has gone on to become even more legendary over the years! The set virtually invented the genre of space rock – but has also touched on the worlds of prog, Krautrock, and even hard rock and metal with everything that's going on inside – lots of tracks that definitely live up to the space promise of the title, but which also find a way to jam as well – mixing heady guitar lines with cool electronics and effects – and even a bit of alto and flute from the group's great Nik Turner! The whole thing's fantastic – essential listening throughout – and titles include "Adjust Me", "Children Of The Sun", "Master Of The Universe", "We Took The Wrong Step Years Ago", "You Know You're Only Dreaming", and the 15 minute classic "You Shouldn't Do That". MF Doom left our planet all too soon, and he left behind a great legacy of music, too – including a previous collaboration with the Czarface collective, nicely matched by this posthumous set! The balance here is great, and the set brings the metal man of mystery into great play with his collaborators and guests who include DMC, Kendra Morris, and Del The Funky Homosapien – all coming together on an album that's every bit as fun as the first time around, and maybe even more essential, given that we're not going to hear that much more from the unissued archives of MF Doom. Lionel HamptonAir Mail Special ... CD
Verve (Japan), 1953. Used ... $11.99 14.99
One of the standout gems from Lionel Hampton's 50s sessions for Verve – wonderful small combo recordings that let Hamp stretch out in freer solo space than usual! Although the Hampton fame always lay in his popularly-touring bigger band, and all its related pyrotechnics, we've always loved Lionel's sound in a more intimate setting – and the way his ringing tone on the vibes prefaces work to come in later years by Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Nelson, and others – bold, soulful, and surprisingly modern at times. There's a metallic quality to the solo work on these sides that we really like a lot – and which offers a nice contrast to Milt Jackson's vibes of the period through its more powerfully pronounced understanding of the instrument's tone. The core group is a quartet – with Oscar Peterson on piano, Ray Brown on bass, and Buddy Rich on drums – and half the set features the clarinet of Buddy DeFranco. All tracks are nice and long – almost jam-session style – and titles include "Soft Winds", "Airmail Special", "The Way You Look Tonight", and "It's Only A Paper Moon". CD

The debut of Skyzoo, and a set that already has the Brooklyn MC confident enough to share his thoughts and ideas at a very personal level – maybe taking some of the modes of the backpack generation, and giving it a bit more bite – all in a way that prefaces other work of its time to emerge strongly in the following decade! The set's got a variety of production help – 9th Wonder, Eric G, Cyrus Tha Great, Best Kept Secret, Just Blaze, and others – which creates this great palette of sonic energy, while also keeping things unified by the presence of Skyzoo in the lead! There's not really much in the way of features – which keeps the core energy going strong – and titles include "The Shooter's Soundtrack", "My Interpretation", "The Beautiful Decay", "Easy To Fly", "For What It's Worth", "Dear Whoever", and "Metal Hearts". T Rex's phenomenal second album since moving into a heavier glam mode, following the great Electric Warrior LP – still standing firmly as one of the best purely rocking, trashy fun rock & roll albums of the 70s! Marc Bolan's roots on spacier psyche folk melodies sort of float over beefier, fuzzier, sleazier hooks – a facet of the T Rex sound that always set them apart from the pack of more rote guitar rock guys & gals, and this peak material. Includes the eternal "Metal Guru" & "Telegram Sam", more classics like the title track, "Mystic Lady", "Baby Boomerang", "Ballrooms Of Mars", "Main Man" and more. LP, Vinyl record album

VariousWe're An American Band – A Journey Through The USA Hard Rock Scene 1967 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $28.99 39.99
A really heady set of tracks from the American scene – music that effortlessly bridges the 60s sounds of garage, blues rock, and psych – and prefaces some of the metal and more guitar-heavy modes to emerge later on in the 70s! The work here definitely shares more with the sounds of the 60s, but also really captures the music at a moment when things were really transforming – groups were getting past a slavish presentation of their influences, finding bold new modes of expression, and really letting their freak flag fly with fuzzy brilliance throughout – all at levels that were also different than some of the longer-spun modes of the European progressive world. As with other Grapefruit packages, the distillation of a sound and scene here is wonderful – and supported with very detailed notes too – in a package that includes 62 tracks in all - with work from Bang, Sudden Death, Dust, Arthur Lee, Boomerang, Cactus, Grand Funk, The Flow, Head Over Heels, Sir Lord Baltimore, ZZ Top, Brigade, Fuse, Conception, Morgen, Coven, Alice Cooper, Nazz, Stack, Spirit, Kim Fowley, SRC, Mass Confusion Rock Band, Society's Children, Omnibus, Wildwood, Human Beinz, The Sound Barrier, Fever Tree, and many others!
