Meshell NdegeocelloVentriloquism ... CD
Naive (France), 2018. New Copy ... $14.99 16.99
A fantastic project from the legendary Meshell Ndegeocello – one that has her taking on the tunes of others, hence the title of the album – but completely transforming them with her own unique approach to bass and vocals! Most of the numbers won't be recognized at the start, as the Ndegeocello approach feels as if she wrote all of the work herself – but as the set goes on, you'll definitely catch elements of the tunes – yet love them even more in the way they come alive as vehicles for new expression! Meshell sings and plays bass with a core group that includes great guitars from Chris Bruce, heavy drums from Abraham Rounds, and keyboards from Jebin Bruni – and guests on the album include Jeff Parker on guitar and Kat Khaleel on additional vocals. Titles include "Private Dancer", "Smooth Operator", "I Wonder If I Take You Home", "Nite & Day", "Sensitivity", "Atomic Dog 2017", "Sometimes It Snows In April", and "Don't Disturb This Groove". CD

Meshell NdegeocelloWho Is He & What Is He To You/Leviticus: F@ggot ... CD
Reprise/Maverick, 1996. Used ... $3.99
An excellent remake of Bill Withers' classic! Me'Shell does a great job with the track – keeping the solid 70s groove (which is pretty heavily sampled from the original), but adding in some nice offbeat elements to spice the track up! The flipside is nice, too – and has more of that odd funky feel of some of Me'Shell's best work, with a guitar riff that sounds like it was lifted from a classic funk track by Betty Davis! CD

✨✧ Robert GlasperBlack Radio ... LP
Blue Note, 2012. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
An amazing new chapter in the career of Robert Glasper – one of our favorite new jazz musicians of the past decade or so! This set features loads of Glasper's enigmatic piano lines – those fluid, elliptical sounds that are always filled with plenty of soul and imagination – matched here with guest vocals from a host of key talents – including Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, Musiq Soulchild, Meshell Ndegeocello, Bilal, and Lupe Fiasco! The blend is surprisingly wonderful – not a sell out at all, but a way for Glaspar's music to reach a rich new level of expression – as the vocals really help the instrumental elements come alive – and unlock this side of Robert's potential that was always lurking in the background. One of the best musical moments we've heard from Blue Note in years – with titles that include "Always Shine", "Move Love", "Ah Yeah", "Lift Off", "Afro Blue", "Cherish The Day", "Black Radio", and "Letter To Hermione". ✨✧ Marcus StricklandPeople Of The Sun ... CD
Blue Note, 2018. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
Saxophonist Marcus Strickland continues the electric explorations of his previous project with Meshell Ndegeocello – but works here on his own, with his very cool Twi-Life group – which certainly opens up a whole new dimension in his music! Marcus blows sopranino, alto, tenor, and bass clarinet – in a group that also has Mitch Henry on a fair bit of keyboards, with live bass and drums, and occasional rhythm programs from Strickland himself, which bring a subtle complexity to the music! The sax solos are mostly right out front in the mix – but sometimes step aside for guest contributions from Greg Tate, Bilal, Pharoahe Monch, Akie Bermiss, Jermaine Holmes, and Weedie Braimah – on titles that include "Lullaby", "Build", "Aim High", "On My Mind", "Spirit Of The Music", "Relentlessness", "Marvelous", and "Black Love". ✨✧ VariousCity Soul – Futures – Today's Soul, AOR, & Blue Eyed Soul ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic little set that looks at the huge wave of top-shelf AOR material recorded in recent years – part of a huge global re-awakening to the charms of the genre – often with results that are even groovier than the classic records of the 70s! One of the compelling things here is that the music isn't being made by big names on major labels – and instead is an almost-underground thing – but handled at a level that's completely faithful to the best Cali styles of the 70s – from sweet jazzy instrumentation right down to the perfect production styles to get the whole thing right. You'll recognize a few names here – and will hopefully discover a lot more too – as titles include "Tell Me" by William Sikstrom, "Quiet Storm" by Workshy, "Liberation Groove" by Incognito, "You Make My Life A Better Place" by Mamas Gun, "What You Deserve" by Chris Cauley, "See Me Slumber" by Young Gun Silver Fox, "Melt The Night" by Lucas Arruda, "All Smiles" by Jeremy Passion, "Walkin On Air" by Tomi Malm, "Good To Live" by Monkey House, "Thoughts" by Michael Carreon, "Dangerous" by Umii, "Hello Monday" by Briamarie, "The Greatest" by King, "Perish The Thought" by Ned Doheny, "Sweet Life" by Mike Champion, and "Don't Disturb This Groove" by Meshell Ndegeocello.
