MandrillMandrill ... CD
Polydor/Anagram, 1970. New Copy ... $11.99 12.99
A masterpiece of freeform funk from Mandrill – New York group at the start of the 70s, but one who work here with the best longform jamming styles of the Bay Area scene! The combo draw equal influence from jazz, funk, soul, and Latin – using all elements in a unique hybrid that's all their own – and which really favors instrumental passages more than vocal moments on this debut album – with searing lead guitar from Omar Mesa, next to plenty of organ lines, flute, trumpet, and tenor – all carried with heavy bass and percussion, and peppered with lots of surprises along the way! The whole thing's tremendous – a massively funky first statement from the group – with cuts that include the extended suite "Peace & Love", plus other funky goodies like "Symphonic Revolution", "Rollin' On", "Warning Blues", and "Mandrill". Elton MedeirosElton Medeiros ... LP
Estudio Eldorado (Brazil), Mid 70s. Near Mint- ... $28.99
A classic 70s set from sambista Elton Medeiros – sung to gentle arrangements from Rildo Hora, Cristavao Bastos, and Paulinho Da Viola! The set's got a mix of acoustic percussion, guitars, and just a hint of light woodwinds – carried off in the new traditional spirit of Da Viola's best work from the early 70s, and with a similar sense of soulfulness in Elton's wonderful vocals. The record's a beautiful illustration of simple samba at its best – a masterpiece of understatement, with tracks that include "Unha De Gato", "Vida", "Meu Viver", "Na Mesa De Um Botequim", "Peito Vazio", "Ultimo Verso", "Dentro De Mim", and "Sentimento Perdido". ✨✧ Ennio MorriconeGiu La Testa (Duck You Sucker) (expanded 2CD edition) ... CD
Cinevox (Italy), 1971. Used 2CD ... Out Of Stock
A fantastically beautiful record – easily one of Ennio Morricone's dreamiest scores of the 70s! Although the film itself is a western, Morricone's soundtrack is far different than usual – with hardly any traditional western themes at all, and mostly just music that's in that mellow, floating, dream-like style that's been so heavily represented in recent years by the Mondo Morricone series! Strange voices interweave with plucked instrumental passages, all underpinned by warm haunting washes of sound that carry the music on beautifully airy waves! Titles include "Giu La Testa", "Amore", "Mesa Verde", "Rivoluzione Contro", "Dopop L'Esplosione", "Scherzi A Parte", and "Invenzione Per John". Expanded 2CD version features a whopping 15 bonus tracks that are alternates from the film – all of them dreamy, and all of them wonderful! CD

Aesop Rock & BlockheadGarbology (random colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
Aesop Rock and Blockhead have worked together before, but this is the first album to be fully produced by the latter – who really gives the whole thing a crisp, straightforward vibe that adds plenty to the urgency of Aesop's lyrics! The set was done during the pandemic, and has a stripped-down approach that actually seems to make the distance and separation work to its advantage – a mode that really strips things down to the core, and maybe has the rapper sounding more important than he has in years. Titles include "More Cycles", "All Day Breakfast", "Fizz", "That Is Not A Wizard", "Difficult", "Legerdemain", "Wolf Piss", and "Jazz Hands". LP, Vinyl record album

Columbia, 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 27.99
Take it from us, Leon Bridges is no gold-digger – as with music like this, he'll be bringing plenty of the gold himself – as the record is the sort that should really put Bridges over the top! Leon's already been giving us some great sounds in recent years – but this set has Bridges emerging as a fully-formed soul star in his own right – not just the voice that's been winning us over already, but a sense of confidence and power in his lyrics – not ego, but self – wide enough so share space here on collaborations with Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and Ink – who all get a chance to bring a strong something extra, and not just show up as names on paper. Titles include "Born Again", "Motorbike", "Why Don't You Touch Me", "Magnolias", "Steam", "Sho Nuff", "Gold-Diggers", "Blue Mesas", "Don't Worry", and "Sweeter". LP, Vinyl record album

DJ ToolzMo' Better Toolz – Breaks Beats 'N' Grooves Volume 2 ... LP
Ninja Tune (UK), Early 90s. Very Good+ ... $24.99
One of the earliest Ninja Tune releases, back when the label was still a somewhat clandestine operation like it's namesake, as a way for the Coldcut crew to release raw breaks and mixing records, after the problems they ran into with major labels. These early DJ Toolz and DJ Food series were mostly made up of raw funky and jazzy loops for mixing and cutting, with each track labeled with a BPM, though there's some numbers that are cut together more like songs. Long out of print, and a great piece of history, and still an excellent mixing tool! 16 tracks in all, with titles like "A Break For All Reasons", "Jabo", "Kung Fu", "Heavy Strut", "Another 20 Dollars", "Latin Slide", "Blackbird", "Makin' Money" and "Get Out Of My Life". Not much bossa nova or Latin groove going on here – mostly mellow vocals with a bit of a smooth jazz finish. The record's not bad, but it's also not what you'd guess from the title – and is mostly worth checking if you're into middle of the road vocal albums. Titles include "Nadien Mas", "Breakout", "We're All Alone", "Tu Y Yo", "Cuando Te Conoci", "Despedida", and "Promesa De Amor". CD

Lee MorganLee Morgan Vol 3 (RVG remaster edition – with bonus track) ... CD
Blue Note, 1957. Used ... $9.99
One of the hardest to find of the early Lee Morgan albums on Blue Note – and a very lyrical batch of hardbop tracks, played with a slightly exotic flair! Morgan's group on the date features melodic modernists Benny Golson on tenor and Gigi Gryce on alto sax – both of whom push Morgan past his youthful bop approach into more sensitive areas – especially Golson, who wrote and arranged the tunes on the date with a sublime mix of hardbop and deeper musical ideals! Rhythm is from the trio of Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums – and titles include a great reading of Golson's "I Remember Clifford", plus four other originals by Benny – "Hasaan's Dream", "Domingo", "Mesabi Chant", and "Tip Toeing". VariousHabibi Funk – An Eclectic Selection Of Music From The Arab World ... LP
Habibi Funk (Germany), 1970s/1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99 32.99
Get ready to have your mind completely blown – because this compilation is one of those completely rare ear-opening experiences that will let you know that there's a hell of a lot of music in the world that you've never heard before – even if, like us, you've heard plenty of funky music over the years! The grooves here definitely live up to the title – as they're completely funky throughout, and in ways that are plenty appealing to fans of Anglo funk, but which have all the Mideast touches you'd expect in the instrumentation – a mad mix of east and west, sacred and secular, with the kind of completely unique vibe that will grab you like the first time you heard Ethiopian soul or Turkish rock! We'd honestly never heard most of this music before – and even though we've dug previous releases on the Habibi Funk label, this namesake set is the moment when they really knock it out of the park, and let us know that they're on to something completely brilliant. Comes with a great set of note, which help the uninitiated like us – and titles include "Casablanca Shuffle" by Belbao, "Wang Dang" by Bob Destiny, "Bsslama Hbibti" by Fadoul, "Sah" by Al Massrieen, "Soul Brother" by Dalton, "Al Asafir" by Kamal Keila, "Rouhi Ya Hafida" by Mallek Mohamed, "La Coladera" by Freh Khodja, "Tape 19.11" by Ahmed Malek, "Ayonha" by Hamid El Shaeri, and "Games" by Samir & Abboud. ✨✧ Milt JacksonBig Bags – Milt Jackson Orchestra ... LP
Riverside, 1962. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A sweet larger group session from vibist Milt Jackson – proof that he was really trying to stretch his wings, and get into new things during the 60s! The set's got Milt working with some great help from Tadd Dameron and Ernie Wilkins on larger group arrangements – nicely swinging charts that have a nice touch of modern, but lots of straightforward grooving too! Milt's the primary soloist, buoyed by an orchestra built around a rhythm section of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and either Connie Cay or Philly Joe on drums – plus loads of great horn players like Clark Terry, Nat Adderley, Melba Liston, James Moody and Jimmy Heath among others. Titles include renditions of "Old Devil Moon", "'Round Midnight", "The Dream Is You", "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To", "Echoes", "If You Could See Me Now", "Star Eyes", "Namesake", "If I Should Lose You", and "Later Than You Think". ✨✧ Erkin KorayArap Saci ... LP
Turkofon/Pharaway Sounds (Spain), Mid 70s. New Copy 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Jimi Hendrix of Turkey? That may well be the case with the legendary Erkin Koray – a musician who may not have had the pure chops of Hendrix, but who definitely helped transform the guitar sound of an entire generation! Erkin's got this massively wicked groove – rooted in years of Turkish tradition, yet electrified too – and often laid out over rhythms that are hypnotic and exotic – a perfect fit for the tripped-out production of the tunes! This excellent double-length collection brings together material from rare singles and albums by Koray – and really stands as a perfect introduction to one of the coolest cats in the Near East during the 70s – music that really defies description, not to mention the boundaries of language and nation as well. Titles include "Sevince", "Anma Arkadas", "Eyvah", "Arap Saci", "Komsu Kizi", "Timbilli", "Sana Birseyler Olmus", "Silinmeyen Hatiralar", "Yagmur", "Mesafeller", and "Feshuphanallah". ✨✧ MF DoomMM Food (green & pink vinyl pressing) ... LP
Rhymesayers, 2004. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The bugged sci fi maestro MF Doom's mid 00s masterpiece – and a straight up tie with Madvilliany for the championship title of best Doom-related LP since his immortal debut! As you'd guess from the title, this album has a running theme with food, each title funnier than the last, but stays fresh throughout the 15 tracks thanks to tight production, masterfully spliced samples, and a verbal flow that's cooked and spiced to some kind of freakish perfection. The great "Hoe Cakes" single gets served early in set, and it sets the tone for a truly strong album. "Boss like King Koopa. . .". Includes "Beef Rap", "Potholderz" with Count Bass D, "One Beer" produced by Madlib, "Poo Poo Platter", "Fillet-O-Rapper", "Gumbo", "Fig Leaf Bi Carbonate", "Kon Queso" produced by PNS, "Vomitspit", "Kookies" and more. ✨✧ Small FacesSmall Faces (Immediate) ... LP
Immediate (UK), 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
The namesake Small Faces album on Immediate – some of the tightest work the great Brit rockers ever recorded! The album's amazing right from the very first note – a perfect bridge between the ongoing mod energy of the London scene, and the psychedelic sounds in years to come – served up with a tight, compact, focused approach that still blows away most of the many groups it helped inspire! The group would dive into a heady psychedelic groove about a year later with incredible success on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake – but here, the group is still riding on the walloping soul and R&B influences on this record – driving and tuneful, with some hints at the strange sounds to come in the freewheeling organ and occasional odd instrumentation. Titles include "(Tell Me) Have You Ever Seen Me", "Something I Want To Tell You", "Feeling Lonely", "Happy Boys Happy", "Things Are Going To Get Better", "Become Like You", "All Our Yesterdays", "Show Me The Way", and "Eddie's Dreaming". The brilliant debut of Aesop Rock – a set that initially circulated as a homemade CDr, but which has gone on to become the stuff of legend over the years! There's a raw, sinister vibe here that shows just how much Aesop and his generation were renewing the importance of the New York sound – stripping things down with a focus on lean production, and these really well-crafted vocals that have a density that's still pretty mindblowing after all these years! Titles include "Hold The Cup", "Sick Friend", "1000 Deaths", "Blue In The Face", "Odessa", "Same Space", and "Dry Spell". LP, Vinyl record album

This is the Aesop album on MUSH records before he got signed to Def Jux. It is a piece of raw, dark, poetic artistry that describes his hometown of NYC and the trials and tribulations in it beautifully. This album is a little rougher and his lyrical style is just a little more advanced on his later work, but all the same, it gets massive praise here. Tracks include "Commencement At The Obedience Academy", "Drawbridge", "Big Bang", "Garbage", "Basic Cable", "I'll Be OK", "Attention Span", "Spare A Match", "Breakfast With Blockhead", "Fascination", "Skip Town", "How To Be A Carpenter", "The Mayor And The Crook", "Prosperity", and more. ✨✧ California PlayboysTrying To Become A Millionaire (with download) ... LP
Loadstone/Manufactured, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning funky soul by California Playboys – a heck of a record that should have made the Playboys a huge combo at the time! It's a shame the group didn't become millionaires – but the obscurity of the record is maybe also one of its charms – the kind of small label set that never fully got its due at the time, but which is ripe for rediscovery all these many years later! The California Playboys were together for a number of years – forming as a backing band for singer Lester Young (not the sax player), doing session work for others, and otherwise developing their skills for years – all of which really comes through here in their sharp-edged instrumentation, which sounds even sharper in the 70s indie-level production for the album. The killer title tune sounds like it could (and should!) be the namesake tune of a funky mid 70s soundtrack – as it's really got a perfect cinematic soul vibe, ala Bobby Womack and Marvin Gaye – though in a tighter, smaller combo setting. Most tunes start with vocals and end with long instrumental riffing – and titles include"Double Love", "She's A Real Sweet Woman", "Just Say A Four Letter Word", "I've Got To Find Myself Another Girl", and "Turned On For Good". ✨✧ Maria Rita (Maria Rita Stumpf)Brasileira ... LP
Selva (Brazil), 1988. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Not the same Maria Rita that rose to international fame in the past decade or so – but an earlier, much more obscure singer with a nicely rootsy vibe – one whose presence in the Brazilian music scene is maybe more welcome to our ears than her famous later namesake! The album came out at the end of the 80s, but has a sound that feels more like the experimental generation of MPB in the 70s – some moments that have the brashness of Gal Costa around her India album, other moments of gentleness that recall the sensitive soul of Joyce, and maybe a few slight touches of the deeper drama of Maria Bethania – and yet, like all of those artists, this Maria Rita is very much her own person – as can easily be heard by the lack of pop production or commercial efforts on this very unique album. Titles include "Cantico Brasileiro No 1", "Cancao Da Gaora", "Lamento Africano/Rictus", "A Cidade", "Melodia De Veludo", and "Trilhas". LP, Vinyl record album
