This One's For You was Teddy's first album after his legendary car crash in the early 80s – and a record that has him stepping back into the limelight with a smooth Philly groove! The overall sound is a bit more laidback and mellow – with not as many clubby groovers as before – but Teddy's still got the right mix of rough and smooth to win favor from our ears, even on the ballad cuts. Tunes on the set were written by Gamble & Huff, Ashford & Simpson, and McFadden & Whitehead – and titles include "I Can't Win For Losing", "This One's For You", "This Gift Of Life", "Now Tell Me That You Love Me", "Don't Leave Me Out Along The Road", and "Only To You". Heaven Only Knows features a warmer Teddy than ever before – one who glides along with a majestic, mature approach to his music – in a way that shows that Pendergrass was as good an interpreter of ballads and mellow cuts as he formerly was of more club-driven tunes. A few tracks on the album still hit a nice midtempo groove, but there's a mellower feel here overall – one that has the aging Teddy setting a sound that other singers would steal heavily in the decade to come. Although Archie Bell & The Drells had recorded earlier with Gamble & Huff on Atlantic, this is their first album for the team's own label – and it's a killer! In a way, Archie and group were sort of responsible for getting Gamble & Huff their own famous imprint in the first place – because their work with the team on Atlantic yielded some instant hits that really pointed the way towards the hit Gamble & Huff style of the 70s, and that sound is brought up-to-date nicely on this LP. The record really retains the strong vocal sound of earlier years – and has some of the best harmonies the band ever recorded, very much in the mode of The O'Jays or Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. McFadden & Whitehead and Bunny Sigler wrote most of the material, backing is by the Instant Funk group, and the Gamble & Huff team handled production on all cuts.
