Completely wonderful work from Matt Berry – an actor that most folks know for his hilarious performances in a number of TV shows – but also a surprisingly strong singer/songwriter, with a down to earth and honest vibe that's completely different than his role on screen! In fact, forget all about Matt Berry on screen – even though we love his work there so much – because this Matt Berry is a completely different individual, one who paints these songs that are often surprisingly dark, but never dreary – and surprisingly honest, both in the lyricism and the execution – which often has Berry singing with a style that's far less ironic than his delivery of his lines. A set that's not nearly as terror-filled as you might expect – as the set's a highly instrumental one, and really lets Matt Berry explore his love of vintage psych, acid folk, and other dark influences from the past – but all with a vibe that's lean and nicely contemporary too, so that the music here is very much Matt's own sound! The album features variations on tunes by Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa, but also includes plenty of Berry originals too – and much of the charm of the record comes from the way the gently swirling guitars interact with the keyboards – all at a level that's nicely understated, and never too forced. A wonderful coffee that lives up to its name – roasted especially by the folks at Chicago's Dark Matter for our coffee drinking needs here at Dusty Groove! The base component to this blend is a coffee from Mexico and grown and milled at a cooperative called El Eden – very unique for a Mexican coffee, with a flavor profile that includes blueberry, banana, and baker's chocolate to give the blend a bit of depth. This base is then highlighted with a coffee from Guatemala grown by Finca San Jeronimo Miramar – which adds both body, and some lighter notes of toffee and praline – to give the whole thing a wonderful sun-drenched finish! Very groovy work from The Swingin Blue Jeans – a UK quartet who rose up in the same wave that brought the world The Beatles, but one who never fully got their due on our side of the Atlantic! Yet despite that lack, the group's work is wonderful – tight guitars and vocal harmonies, and the kind of jaunty, catchy tunes that really made the Merseybeat scene shine in the early 60s – taken here to some great new territory on the group's later tracks too! From the very first note, it's clear that these guys are a great group first, and a recording act second – as there's a sharpness and tightness that's maybe more familiar to fans of American groups from the Northwest scene at the same time – a no-nonsense approach that has the guitars and vocals getting right to the heart of the matter right away, then really having a hell of a lot of fun over the short space of the tunes! UK listeners might know the group's few big hits, but there's a hell of a lot more here that stands in strong testimony to the group's greatness – 103 tracks in all, with a huge amount of material we've never seen elsewhere – all supported by a massive booklet of notes. Completely wonderful work from a very small but special slice of the British music scene at the end of the 60s – a place where folk and psych dance together effortlessly, acoustic and electric instruments sit side by side at the table, and old and new modes have a way of working together to build a special path to the future! The sounds here are very visionary – music that's in a farther space past territory that Island and Transatlantic Records were exploring at the time – not really folk, but using some of its acoustic elements – sometimes with stunning large arrangements, sometimes with more freak and fuzz – all served up by groups who were years ahead of their time. The massive package is maybe even better than the first in the series – a whopping 61 tracks in all – with work from The Woods Band, Fairfield Parlour, Jade Warrior, The Ghost, Honeybus, Fresh Maggots, Fat Mattress, Kevin Lamb, Clifford T Ward, Keith West, Agincourt, Tim Hollier, Snafu, Siren, Bruce Spelman, Carolanne Pegg, Maldoon, Fotheringay, Majority One, Chris Harwood, Jade, and dozens of others – all served up with hefty notes as well.
