✨✧ Hensley's Electric Jazz Band & Synthetic SymphonetMasters Of Deceit ... LP
Vanguard, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great lost psychedelic relic! Albums like this remind us that once upon a time Vanguard was one of the hippest labels around. We can't tell you much about Tom Hensley or his Electric Jazz Band and Synthetic Symphonette, but we're nearly certain this oddball, arty bit of psychedelia is their only recording, and it's a fine bit of intoxicant induced jamming, though it falls a bit shy of jazz. 6 numbers in all, a couple of them nice and long, too, including "Shining", "Boxes", "The Grand Illusion", "Long Hard Journey", "Mirror" and "Pieces: Together: Pieces". RJE, 1981. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Way more than just the usual college jazz outing – as the group here is not only led by saxophonist Paul Jeffrey, but also features some great guest work from Clifford Jordan! The college players are pretty fantastic, too – as the set features saxophone solos by young Tom Chapin, Jerry Weldon, Peter Belasco, and Andrew Beal – and great piano work from Harry Pickens and Alan Watson. Most tunes are older jazz numbers, given fresh arrangements by Jeffrey – and titles include "Darben The Red Fox", "Last Train From Overbrook", "Chi Chi", "Hail To The King", "Straight Ahead", "Fried Bananas", and "Moody's Mood". Eddie RussFresh Out! ... CD
Jazz Masters/Soul Jazz (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 22.99
A landmark bit of indie funk from the 70s – one of the few records cut by Detroit keyboardist Eddie Russ, and easily the best! The album features Russ going to town on electric piano – working with a hip combo called The Mixed Bag, which features some wicked work on flute and soprano sax by Larry Nozero – and a vibe that's a lot more laidback than standard funk, or even more mainstream jazz funk too – a sweet open groove that's mighty nice all the way through! The album's really a showcase for Nozero and Russ' solos – trading back and forth effortlessly over long tunes that roll along in a sweet electric-tinged groove – long vamping rhythms that really seem to drive both players onto new heights. Titles include Russ' classic "The Lope Song", a great version of "Hill Where The Lord Hides", and the tracks "Shamading", "Watergate Blues", and "All But Blind". CD

Art Ensemble Of ChicagoDreaming Of The Masters Suite – Music Inspired By & Dedicated To John Coltrane ... CD
DIW (Japan), 1990. Used ... $18.99
Possibly the best entry in Art Ensemble Of Chicago's Dreaming Of The Masters series – as the set's devoted to the work of John Coltrane, and has a really unified feel throughout! About half the tunes are Coltrane compositions, and the rest are originals by the Art Ensemble – done with fluid, open sounds that are less a strict tribute to Coltrane, than an expression of the ideas in jazz he allowed! As you might guess, the reeds play strongly in the sound of the set – and both Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell hit some great moments on the Coltrane tunes especially – notes that are quite different than any Trane might have played, but which he would no doubt appreciate in his music. Titles include "Dreaming Of The Masters", "Impressions", "Spiritual", "Naima", "Song For Atala", and "Go Head". CD

Great Jazz TrioGreat Tokyo Meeting ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $9.99
A great Tokyo meeting from this wonderful trio – and a great little record that even stands out from most of their others from the time! The set's got a surprising amount of original material by the members of the group – as each player contributes at least one title – and these compositions really help give the whole thing a very fresh, personal vibe – quite different than the more common use of standards on some of their other albums. And although Hank Jones is billed as the "owner" of the group on the title, the set is the same sort of wonderfully collaborative effort as usual – with some specially brilliant work on bass from Ron Carter, and well-chosen work on drums from Tony Williams. Titles include "Forever", "To Destiny", "Pink Lady", "GJT", and "Mellow Blues". CD

Both Carter and Williams help Hank to hit the hipper side of his talents for the 70s – and together, they work as one – with a well-rounded, well-crafted style that's a great testament to the group's strong appeal at the time. Marge (France), 2016. Used ... $4.99
We've loved drummer Noel McGhie in many modes over the years – including free jazz and funky fusion – and here, he's working in a very cool hybrid of jazz and Caribbean styles – with some island-styled rhythms inflected by solo work on trumpet, guitar, and alto sax! The sound is much brighter than some of Noel's early work – that might also have to do with the production – and his work on drums is almost funky at times, but with a bit more complication in the rhythms overall. Players include Patrick Sedoc on guitar, Daniele Vigilucci on alto, and Rasul Siddik on trumpet – and one track features a vocal appearance from Awa Timbo. Titles include "The Jump", "Footprints", "Mademoiselle Tulloch", "Rockin In Rhythm", and "My Little Suede Shoes". CD

VariousWorld Of Keith Haring – Influences & Connections – 1978 to 1984 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.98
Way more than just a tribute to the legendary artist Keith Haring – as the collection's more of a portrait of the downtown New York scene in which Haring lived and worked – served up here as a fantastic blend of hip hop, street soul, and offbeat club tracks from the time! The music here is a great antidote to more familiar territory in the disco and 80s groove years – as many of these artists effortlessly combine stylistic modes with the same groundbreaking energy that Haring brought to his artwork – signaling the rise of a whole new generation, while also giving them a great soundtrack of grooves! The double-length package is wonderful – full of music that most folks might not expect together, but which really set the scene back at the start of the 80s – tracks that include "It's Music" by Damon Harris, "For The Same Man" by B Beat Girls, "Weekend (Larry Levan mix)" by Class Action, "Elephant Man" by The Girls, "Chuka Ja" by Adiche, "Danger" by Pylon, "Pak Man" by Jonzun Crew, "Bump & Grind It" by John Sex, "Jam Hot" by Johnny Dynell, "Over & Over (12" disco)" by Sylvester, "I Zimbra" by Talking Heads, "Sortie 134 (part 2)" by Art Zoyd, "Let's Do It" by Convertion, "Cut It Up High Priest" by Gray, "Love Money" by Funk Masters, "Change The Beat" by Fab 5 Freddy, "ET Boogie" by Extra T's, "Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" by Golden Flamingo Orchestra, and "Jeffrey I Hear You" by The Girls. ✨✧ Great Jazz TrioChapter II ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The second part of a great Japanese-only session recorded in 1980 – one that features a later edition of the Great Jazz Trio – with Eddie Gomez on bass and Al Foster on drums, next to piano by usual group member Hank Jones! The set's got a hipper feel than usual for the group – partly because Jones plays Fender Rhodes on part of the record, and partly because Gomez's work on bass gives the proceedings a warm and soulful sound – that deep-flowing groove we first came to love in Eddie's work with Bill Evans and Jeremy Steig. Foster's drums are great too – and have a sense of sharpness that changes the Great Jazz Trio sound nicely. Titles include "Peedlun", "Light Listened", "Duplex", "Just Before Dawn", and "Sublime". CD

✨✧ Great Jazz TrioMilestones ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of a number of late 70s milestones from the Great Jazz Trio – that sublime grouping of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums! Like the rest of their gems from the time, the album's got this simple, subtle brilliance – a way of approaching piano trio material that was quite fresh for the time – different than Jones might have sounded the decade before, and clearly influenced by the huge growth of the format in Japan – the market for which the album was originally produced. Carter really shines on the record – reminding us of his incredible ability to act as both a soloist and a rhythmatist – and Tony Williams is a great here as he is on the Herbie Hancock trio dates of the time. Titles include "Wave", "Milestones", "Mr Biko", and "Eighty One". CD

✨✧ Jackie McLean & The Great Jazz TrioNew Wine In Old Bottles ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A very apt title – as Jackie McLean sits in for a soulful session with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – all "old bottles" at this point in their career, but working together beautifully to brew some very mellow "new wine"! The album's easily one of the best in the trio's run of the time – as Jackie's alto sax really helps flesh things out a bit more than usual – and moves the album past the trio sound of their other records. McLean gets plenty of space to do his thing on the longer tracks – and the piano of Jones, bass of Carter, and drums of Williams have a solid, soulful approach that's really wonderful. Titles include 2 McLean originals titled "Appointment In Ghana Again" and "Little Melonae Again", both remakes of older tunes – plus "Confirmation", "Bein Green", and "Round Midnight". CD

East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
One of the most open-ended sessions ever recorded by the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Hones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – a live set from the Village Vanguard, and one that features them really stretching out on 4 longer tracks! Jones' work on piano is an especially nice treat here – as he's still got the poise that we know from his more restrained studio sessions, yet also seems to really loosen up with the warm rhythm accompaniment of Carter and Williams. The session features a great obscure gentle groover titled "Wind Flower", plus a really introspective take on Miles Davis' "Nardis", and the tunes "Lawra" and "Confirmation". CD

The Village Vanguard seemed to be one of the greatest settings for the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – as the venue really let them stretch out in the kind of loose, open lines that made their 70s albums so great! This set's the 3rd that the trio recorded at the Vanguard – and it's very much in the best spirit of its predecessors – gently soulful, with a strong focus on the individual talents of the players, yet nary a moment of overindulgence. A bit of a change for The Great Jazz Trio, but a great one too – given that Buster Williams is on bass here, instead of the usual Ron Carter – working with drummer Tony Williams and pianist Hank Jones to really make things sparkle! Buster's bass is always a treat, and this album's no exception – a set that's filled with some surprisingly soulful moments on the bottom, which really seems to push the group nicely on the longer tracks in the set. East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1980. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A slightly different lineup than usual for the Great Jazz Trio – but a great one too, and proof that the group had way more to offer than just familiar trio grooving! This time around, Eddie Gomez is on bass – making for a wonderfully full, rich sound in the rhythms – a perfect complement for the sly drumming of Al Foster – who adds an edge to the record that you don't always get on other sessions from the group. And Hank Jones really seems to pick up this edge in his acoustic piano playing – and then pushes it even further on his work on Fender Rhodes, which appears on a few of the album's best tracks. All these changes make for a nicely compelling record – one that's got a bit more of a soulful bottom than you might expect – and titles include "Phasar", "Pauletta", "Moreover", "My Cherie Amour", and "Another World". A surprising title – given that Sadao Watanabe was really stretching out a lot in the early 70s – but a fitting one too, as the set's a nice back-to-basics date from the amazing Japanese saxophonist! Sadao's working here with the Great Jazz Trio of Hank Jones on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Tony Williams on drums – a swingingly solid combo who really make things cook, even in a small space – sounding almost better here when topped by Watanabe's sharp-edged alto lines than on their own albums of the time! Sadao also plays a bit of flute, which is really a treat – and titles include "Confirmation", "Episode", "Gary", "3:10 Blues", "Chelsea Bridge", and "One For C". CD

Panart/Craft, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5LP ... $99.99 114.99
An incredible collection of records – a series of albums that forever changed the sound of Latin music around the world! These five sets were all cooked up in the changing Cuban scene at the start of the 60s – where musicians were getting looser and freer, with a sound that was quite different than the tighter big bands of a few years before – strongly influenced by changes in American jazz, including the jam session mode that was big on record during the 50s! In a way, these sides are an answer to that – as they feature all-star musicians coming together on long, more spontaneous tracks – often in smaller combos with heavy influence on rhythm, and lots of work from the key soloists on the dates. Each record has a different leader, but often some of the same musicians – and there's some especially great work on trumpet and tenor by other members of the group – at a level that went on to influence the small combo sound of artists like Joe Cuba, the grooves of the Latin Soul/boogaloo scene, and even the all-star American groups like the Alegre All Stars and Fania All stars in years to come. Records 1 and 2 feature leadership by Julio Gutierrez, record 3 is led by Nino Rivera, record 4 (the most famous) is led by bassist Cachao, and record 5 is led by flautist Fajardo. Benny CarterSwingin' The 20s (Japanese pressing – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Contemporary (Japan), 1958. Used ... $9.99
Benny Carter swings material from the 20s – but the results are a lot better than you might expect! We'll be honest in saying that the cover and theme of this one always made us figure the record was some sort of "old timey" affair – but Benny's surprisingly cool on the record, and is working in a small group mode that may well be even more deftly compelling than his earlier combo sides for Verve! The group here is only a quartet – with Benny on alto and trumpet, Earl Hines on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Shelly Manne on drums – and it's possibly the modern rhythm section that gives the record a nicely soulful groove, and lets the tunes come off as more than just rehashed classics. Carter's tone on the alto is great – and very nicely recorded, with that edge that was showing up strongly in these later years – and titles include "Laugh Clown Laugh", "Thou Swell", "Who's Sorry Now", "A Monday Date", "Someone To Watch Over Me", "In A Little Spanish Town", and "Mary Lou". Atlantic, 1964. Sealed ... $9.99
Beautiful work from the legendary Art Farmer – sounds from a time when the trumpeter was really coming into his own, and finding a way to carve out a special space for himself in modern jazz! The sounds here are fresh, but never overstated – blown with that compact mode that makes Farmer's phrasing so distinct, and set up here with a perfect quartet that features Jim Hall on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums. All players are masters of understatement – and the band is sort of a perfect extension of some of Jimmy Guiffre's earlier work on Atlantic with Hall – as they've perfected a simple style that leaves the instrumental solos floating in air, interacting with each other in subtle complex ways that never cease to amaze. Tracks are longer than on some of the studio albums by the group – and titles include "Swing Spring", "I Want To Be Happy", and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

The approach here is almost in a mid 70s spiritual soul jazz mode – with lots of spare percussion and bass work at the beginning, building in mood and meaning as the set goes on and things heat up. Joe McPhee & Mats GustafssonBrace For Impact (with bonus track) ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2007. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
The first-ever album of studio duets between Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson – quite a surprise, given how often their paths have crossed over the years! The set was recorded in 2007, but only issued many years later – and it's a key document of the power that both improvisers have at this point in their career – each receiving strong global attention and facing new discovery by audiences nobody would have expected to be there for free jazz in the new millennium – but also able to completely put aside their egos and work together with the kind of sensitive interplay that only comes when you've got two masters in a rare moment like this. Sonically, the whole thing is very textural – maybe initially informed by that style that Gustafsson has of exploring all the outer reaches of a saxophone, from the tip of the reed right down to the surface of the pads – as he blows baritone, slide sax, and alto fluteophone – and McPhee works on pocket trumpet, alto, and alto clarinet. Elektra, 1982. Used ... $6.99
A lean little set from Jimmy Smith's back to basics years of the early 80s – an album that's recorded in a relatively old school soul jazz mode! Jimmy's mostly playing Hammond here – but also uses a bit of Arp strings at times – and the rest of the group members include George Benson on guitar, Ron Carter on bass, Grady Tate on drums, and Stanley Turrentine on tenor sax – all playing in modes that are nicely laidback and open. There's a bit of 70s warmth to the production of the record, but little other in the way of modern touches – and in a way, the record almost takes us back to the sound of Jimmy during his very last years at Verve, when he'd mostly returned to small combo work. Orfeon (Mexico), 1972. New Copy ... $4.99
An overview of some of the hippest Mexican rock of the early 70s – put together as a tribute to the country's first rock festival in 1971! Most of the work here is pretty hard edged – tunes with very tight guitars and a slightly bluesy undercurrent – kind of a Mexican equivalent of the Cream/Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple era of the UK – with a fair bit of English language lyrics on most tunes. A few of the rhythms are nicely tight, and almost funky at points – and some of the groups bring in some added horns, which creates almost a jazz rock vibe – especially on work by The Soul Masters, who are clearly our favorites here! The Soul Masters cuts show a dose of James Brown influence too – with some really romping rhythms and super tight horns on tracks that include "New Man", "Jenny My Love", "Libertad", and "I Feel I'm Losing You". Other groups and titles include "Di Por Que" and "Tal Vez" by The Love Army, "Roaming" and "Everyday Face" by La Fachada De Piedra, and "Buscando Alrededor" by Free Minds. CD

Nelson's never content to just echo the sound of previous masters of his instrument – and instead, like a rare few, he finds a way to integrate the instrument into a familiar jazz combo, but all without ever making the vibes stand in second place – really soaring out and ringing forth with a commanding power that really leaves us breathless! Here, Nelson's in some very well-matched, deeply soulful company – a killer quartet with Danny Grissett on piano, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums – superb rhythm players whose own fires rise and burn with the energy of the leader. The ballads on the record are as great as the burners – and it's the burners we love most of all – on titles that include "Eastern Joy Dance", "Soul-Leo", "Grew's Tune", "Samba D'Blue", "New Wheels", "Brothers Under The Sun", and "Melody For Mulgrew". ✨✧ New York Contemporary FiveConsequences ... LP
Fontana, 1963. Very Good+ ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Searing work from the budding New York avant scene of the 60s – material that was some of the first to explode out of the city's new world of jazz – even though it only saw initial release overseas! The 1963 recording even predates the wave of groundbreaking ESP albums – and features a fantastic quintet with Archie Shepp on tenor, Don Cherry on trumpet, John Tchicai on alto, Don Moore on bass, and JC Moses on drums! The vibe is a bit like Shepp's initial work for Impulse – but also a bit more open and improvised, too – with a vibe that shows that even before the ESP label showed up to document the scene, masters like Shepp and company were already making amazing things happen. Titles include "Consequences", "Trio", "Rufus", "Sound Barrier", and "Wo Wo". LP, Vinyl record album
(Japanese pressing – with insert. Cover has some light wear, but is nice overall.)

✨✧ Michael FranksBurchfield Nines ... LP
Warner, 1978. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Great songs, great vocals, great instrumentation, and another late 70s classic from Michael Franks – one of the few mainstream masters of understatement in his generation! As on all his best albums, the style here is a subtle blend of jazz and pop with a bit of a Brazilian inspiration – kind of a more mainstream take on styles that Bob Dorough and Blossom Dearie had first put forth, with all the sort of hip songwriting that sort of reference might imply. Deodato's at the helm of the arrangements here – keeping things lean and clean, and using key contributions from players like Leon Pendarvis, John Tropea, Steve Gadd, and Bud Shank to flesh out the jazzier side of Franks' sound. Titles include "Wrestle A Live Nude Girl", "In Search Of The Perfect Shampoo", "Vivaldi's Song", "Dear Little Nightingale", "When The Cookie Jar Is Empty", "A Robinsong", and "Meet Me In The Deerpark". ✨✧ Ann BurtonBy Myself Alone (with bonus tracks) ... CD
East Wind (Japan), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A hip set of jazz vocals by singer Ann Burton – who's working here in territory that reminds us a bit of Blossom Dearie, or Irene Kral on her best recordings. The set was recorded in Japan in 1974, with backing by assorted small groups that include piano, guitar, flute, and tenor – as well as bass, drums, and conga for the rhythm section. The song selection is especially nice – with an assortment of hip pop tunes and mellow standards – and the CD reissue includes 2 bonus tracks that weren't on the original LP. Titles include "I Could Have Told You So", "Let Me Love You", "May I Come In", "Love Is A Necessary Evil", and "Nice To Be Back Again". CD

Paradise Masters (Brazil), 1964. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Great work from a really groovy little combo – one who works in samba jazz with heavy trombone and saxophone lines, but who also throw in a bit of vocals as well! The approach is less harmony oriented than other Brazilian groups of the time – but there's a similar feel to the blend of bossa and vocals that you might find with Os Cariocas or Tamba Trio – although less set in style overall, so that the vocals appear only sometimes, and usually to add an extra layer of sound. Some tracks feature a bit of electric guitar giving an extra groove to the tunes at the bottom – and titles include "Tao So", "Sambandando", "Samba Deu Um Avanco", "Ela E Carioca", "Gente Que Diz", and "So Vou De Balanco". One of our favorites by King Crimson – and a very underrated record from their earlier years – with a lot more jazz than some of their others! Spacey jazz rock mastery from an incredible group of players – including Mel Collins on lots of flutes and saxes – plus guests Keith Tippett on piano, Mark Charig on cornet, and Harry Miller on bass! This great Fripp-approved 2014 pressing is in the original stereo mix! Includes "Formentera Lady", "Sailor's Tale", "The Letters", "Ladies Of The Road", "Prelude: Song Of The Gulls" and "Islands". ✨✧ LA 4Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte ... CD
East Wind/Universal (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful group, and one with a very unique sound – a style that draws from the early 50s experiments in Brazilian jazz by Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida – but which also moves the approach into even more sophisticated 70s territory! The quartet features Almeida on acoustic guitar and Bud Shank on some wonderful reeds – plus bass from Ray Brown and drums from Shelly Manne, but players who are open to all the new ideas of Bud and Laurindo, but who can also throw in a stronger groove when needed. The album's a wonderful experiment in really pushing the envelope of jazz expression further – but never in any sort of outside ways – and titles include a reading of Ravel's "Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte", plus "C'Est What", "Corcovado", "Autumn Leaves", "Samba De Orfeu", and "Reveil". New MastersoundsRenewable Energy (with bonus download) ... LP
One Note (UK), 2018. New Copy ... $19.99
The New Mastersounds must have their own source of renewable energy – as they've been giving us great records for many years now, and still are strongly on top of their game! The core quartet is driven by the funky drums of Simon Allen, the bumping bass of Pete Shand, the sweet keyboards of Joe Tatton, and the always-sharp guitar of Eddie Roberts – and this time around, they recorded in New Orleans, with help from guest trumpet, tenor, and percussion! There's a diversity to the instrumentals that few other funk groups might venture – especially one as classic as this – so that sometimes the keyboards are in the lead, sometimes Eddie Roberts is taking the whole thing over on guitar, and sometimes the whole group is coming down strongly on the groove. Adryon De Leon sings on "Gonna Be Just Me" – and all other tunes are instrumentals, with titles that include "Hip City", "Chicago Girl", "Tantalus", "Pudding & Pie", "Funk 49", "Green Was Beautiful", and "Living That Jazz Life". World Pacific/Universal (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Exotic jazz meets exotic tunes – as The Mastersounds make some really great magic with songs from the musical Kismet – at a level that's way hipper than you might expect! Of course, the core group is already pretty darn hip – with a young Wes Montgomery on guitar, plus brothers Buddy Montgomery on vibes and Monk Montgomery on Fender electric bass – a really unusual instrument to be used on a jazz date this early on, and which produces wonderful results next to the vibes and guitar! The rest of the group features Richie Crabtree on piano and Benny Barth on drums – both subtle players who let the lyricism of the Montgomery Brothers flow nicely – and titles include "Fate", "Olive Tree", "This Is My Beloved", "Not Since Nineveh", and "Stranger In Paradise". Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
Sami Linna might look like some sort of Tyrolean hipster on the cover of the album, but his guitar has been behind a fair bit of great funky work on the Timmion label in recent years – which is why it's great to hear him up front here in the lead! A bit like when Eddie Roberts stepped out from the New Mastersounds to record his initial solo records, the Sami heard here is definitely different – jazzier, with a lot more complexity to his guitar work – at a level that, if the whole thing were issued back in the 60s (and with a different cover) would have had Linna standing strongly next to the greats of that generation. His tone is superb, his phrasing is wonderful, and there's a clean jazzy vibe to the record that's very different than other Timmion funk and soul records – as Linna plays in a drums, Hammond, and some mighty nice tenor sax. Tracks are all long – and titles include "Umoya", "Dreamsville", "Black Mountain", "Mode For Tomorrow", and "Clowns". CD

✨✧ Jackie & RoyForever ... CD
Music Masters, 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
The team of Jackie & Roy have a charm that never seems to go away – even on later recordings like these which you might imagine to be suspect! The pair fit together so perfect vocally – and after decades of swinging together on a range of jazzy material they seem better equipped than ever to tackle a range of musical challenges. As usual, Jackie dominates on the gentler tunes, but the best numbers have Roy coming up with strong and warm support. Backing is by a trio led by Roy on piano, plus additional horns, strings, and guest instrumentalists that vary from track to track. Highlights include the Annie Ross tune "Music Is Forever", Jackie's own "Fred Astaire", and the lovely Fran Landesman tune "Through The Windows Of Cars" – and the album also features new versions of Jackie & Roy classics "Cheerful Little Earful" and "Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most" – and the tracks "I Know That You Know", "You Didn't Tell Me It Was Wrong", and "The Duke". Chance HaydenGet Somethin' ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlanta, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You".
