Miles DavisMiles Smiles (Columbia Jazz Masters pressing) ... CD
Columbia, 1966. Used ... $2.99
Miles Smiles, but his grin is a wry one – given the angular energy of the set! The album's a landmark effort from the mid 60s quintet that includes Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams – all of whom work without fail to capture Davis' newly emerging approach to jazz – a style that's touched with some of the light lyricism of the late 50s, but which has much sharper edges overall – and really approaches some of the best "new thing" modes that were going down at labels like Blue Note or Impulse! Many tunes have a subtly spare quality, but nonetheless work with a tremendous amount of power – and titles include a classic version of "Freedom Jazz Dance", a haunting take on Shorter's "Footprints", and the titles "Orbits", "Circle", "Dolores", and "Gingerbread Boy". RJE, 1981. Near Mint- ... $33.99
Way more than just the usual college jazz outing – as the group here is not only led by saxophonist Paul Jeffrey, but also features some great guest work from Clifford Jordan! The college players are pretty fantastic, too – as the set features saxophone solos by young Tom Chapin, Jerry Weldon, Peter Belasco, and Andrew Beal – and great piano work from Harry Pickens and Alan Watson. Most tunes are older jazz numbers, given fresh arrangements by Jeffrey – and titles include "Darben The Red Fox", "Last Train From Overbrook", "Chi Chi", "Hail To The King", "Straight Ahead", "Fried Bananas", and "Moody's Mood". Eddie RussFresh Out! ... CD
Jazz Masters/Soul Jazz (UK), 1974. New Copy ... $9.99 22.99
A landmark bit of indie funk from the 70s – one of the few records cut by Detroit keyboardist Eddie Russ, and easily the best! The album features Russ going to town on electric piano – working with a hip combo called The Mixed Bag, which features some wicked work on flute and soprano sax by Larry Nozero – and a vibe that's a lot more laidback than standard funk, or even more mainstream jazz funk too – a sweet open groove that's mighty nice all the way through! The album's really a showcase for Nozero and Russ' solos – trading back and forth effortlessly over long tunes that roll along in a sweet electric-tinged groove – long vamping rhythms that really seem to drive both players onto new heights. Titles include Russ' classic "The Lope Song", a great version of "Hill Where The Lord Hides", and the tracks "Shamading", "Watergate Blues", and "All But Blind". CD

Sonny StittTornado (illustrated cover) ... LP
Jazz Masters, Mid 70s. Very Good ... $24.99
An incredible blend of Fender Rhodes and soulful saxophone – a late record from saxophonist Sonny Stitt, but one that also features the young Eddie Russ on keyboards! The record's got a laidback and funky sound that goes deeper than any of Stitt's earlier sides of the 70s – and it sounds a fair bit like Eddie Russ' own record for the Jazz Masters label, thanks to a pretty heavy focus on the keys. Electric piano starts off most of the tracks before Stitt comes in for his solos – and the arrangements are relatively full, with added horns, guitar, and percussion on a fair number of tunes. Larry Nozero plays flute on the record, and some tracks even seem to feature more of him than Stitt – and the range of grooves here is really great. "Tornado" is a rolling funky tune with lots of conga on the bottom, "Escanaba Beat" is a slightly Latin-styled number, "Spinning Wheel" is taken in a jazzily stepping groove that runs for nearly ten minutes, "By My Side" has a nice chunky drum pattern under the Rhodes, and even the album's version of "We've Only Just Begun" is great – with a wicked rolling bassline sample on the intro, and lots of jazzy changes in the groove! VariousWorld Of Keith Haring – Influences & Connections – 1978 to 1984 ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99 22.98
Way more than just a tribute to the legendary artist Keith Haring – as the collection's more of a portrait of the downtown New York scene in which Haring lived and worked – served up here as a fantastic blend of hip hop, street soul, and offbeat club tracks from the time! The music here is a great antidote to more familiar territory in the disco and 80s groove years – as many of these artists effortlessly combine stylistic modes with the same groundbreaking energy that Haring brought to his artwork – signaling the rise of a whole new generation, while also giving them a great soundtrack of grooves! The double-length package is wonderful – full of music that most folks might not expect together, but which really set the scene back at the start of the 80s – tracks that include "It's Music" by Damon Harris, "For The Same Man" by B Beat Girls, "Weekend (Larry Levan mix)" by Class Action, "Elephant Man" by The Girls, "Chuka Ja" by Adiche, "Danger" by Pylon, "Pak Man" by Jonzun Crew, "Bump & Grind It" by John Sex, "Jam Hot" by Johnny Dynell, "Over & Over (12" disco)" by Sylvester, "I Zimbra" by Talking Heads, "Sortie 134 (part 2)" by Art Zoyd, "Let's Do It" by Convertion, "Cut It Up High Priest" by Gray, "Love Money" by Funk Masters, "Change The Beat" by Fab 5 Freddy, "ET Boogie" by Extra T's, "Guardian Angel Is Watching Over Us" by Golden Flamingo Orchestra, and "Jeffrey I Hear You" by The Girls. A rich tapestry of Afro-Caribbean rhythms – and one of the most compelling albums we've heard in years from David Murray! The set features an expanded group of percussionists, vocalists, and other instrumentalists – fronted by lead solo stars David Murray and Pharoah Sanders – all jamming freely in styles that bring together bits of African, Haitian, and Cuban rhythms – forging them into a bold new sound for the project! Tracks are all quite longish, and given the previous skills that both Murray and Sanders have exhibited in such settings, they're more than up for the challenge of working with such a heady group of players! Billy BangDistinction Without A Difference (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
Billy Bang has always been one of the most incredible players on his instrument – a jazz violinist who could take the strings into freely creative territory, yet also somehow manage to swing – a balance that nobody ever seemed to manage as well as Bang! And while Billy's work in groups is always wonderful, the strengths of his genius maybe come through even more in a solo setting like this – as Bang uses the violin in ways that are completely unheard of, even in jazz work of the decade before – but also while somehow holding to an inherent core that always makes his music make immediate sense, even to the most casual listener. The album's a true testament to the genius that Bang brought to jazz violin – and why we still love him on the instrument more than anyone else. Titles include "Theme For Masters", "Sometime Later", "Improvisation On Sweet Space", and "Loweski". This great edition comes in a gatefold LP-styled cover – almost like a mini version of the original record released by Hat Hut – with bonus tracks that include "Fiddle In The Floodlight", "Subway Ride With Giuseppi Logan", "Echo Vamp", "Prana", and "A Pebble Is A Small Rock". Al Casey/Billy Butler/Jackie WilliamsGuitar Odyssey ... CD
Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1974. New Copy ... $14.99
A really fantastic album of jazz guitar – one that features two masters from an earlier era, both recorded in the 70s in a really stripped-down setting! The group just features the drums of Jackie Williams with the guitars of Al Casey and Billy Butler – both players who have a highly rhythmic style in their music, which they draw from strongly throughout – as one guitarist will solo while the other will provide more of a rhythmic pulse – and Butler does an especially nice job of changing up his guitar "voice" from track to track. Most tunes are standards, but the setting really transforms them – and titles include "Ghost Of A Chance", "Tea For Two", "Mack The Knife", "Who", "Al & Billy Fast Blues", "Indian Summer", "Three Little Words", and "Al & Billy Blues". Art FarmerLive At The Half Note ... LP
Atlantic, 1964. Near Mint- ... $19.99
Beautiful work from the legendary Art Farmer – sounds from a time when the trumpeter was really coming into his own, and finding a way to carve out a special space for himself in modern jazz! The sounds here are fresh, but never overstated – blown with that compact mode that makes Farmer's phrasing so distinct, and set up here with a perfect quartet that features Jim Hall on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Walter Perkins on drums. All players are masters of understatement – and the band is sort of a perfect extension of some of Jimmy Guiffre's earlier work on Atlantic with Hall – as they've perfected a simple style that leaves the instrumental solos floating in air, interacting with each other in subtle complex ways that never cease to amaze. Tracks are longer than on some of the studio albums by the group – and titles include "Swing Spring", "I Want To Be Happy", and "What's New". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe McPhee & Mats GustafssonBrace For Impact (with bonus track) ... CD
Corbett vs. Dempsey, 2007. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99
The first-ever album of studio duets between Joe McPhee and Mats Gustafsson – quite a surprise, given how often their paths have crossed over the years! The set was recorded in 2007, but only issued many years later – and it's a key document of the power that both improvisers have at this point in their career – each receiving strong global attention and facing new discovery by audiences nobody would have expected to be there for free jazz in the new millennium – but also able to completely put aside their egos and work together with the kind of sensitive interplay that only comes when you've got two masters in a rare moment like this. Sonically, the whole thing is very textural – maybe initially informed by that style that Gustafsson has of exploring all the outer reaches of a saxophone, from the tip of the reed right down to the surface of the pads – as he blows baritone, slide sax, and alto fluteophone – and McPhee works on pocket trumpet, alto, and alto clarinet. Titles include "Suicide Chicken Wings Over Nickelsdorf", "Bat Cave Feast", "Just Blue", "Just Green", "Race Matters", and "Blame Game". CD

French reissue of a nice little set from Russell – not to be confused with the Riverside LP with a similar title. Not as arch-modern as some of his later work, with strong playing in kind of that east coast chamber jazz mode that you'd find in some of the other RCA sides of the time. Players include Art Farmer, Hal McKusick, Bill Evans, Barry Galbraith, and Joe Harris – and the tracks are mostly originals, written with slight touches of whimsy, but less of the indulgence on that front as you'd hear on west coast material. ✨✧ Sonny StittStomp Off Let's Go ... LP
Flying Dutchman, 1976. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
An unusual late record from the legendary Sonny Stitt – a set that's got some electricity in the group, but at a level that's not entirely funky jazz! Instead, the tracks are long, and feature some well-crafted solos from the leader – and the vibe here is loose at times, a bit like the more obscure recordings that Sonny did for the Jazz Masters label in Detroit! Richard Davis handles electric bass at the bottom, alongside drums from Louis Bellson and guitar from Bucky Pizzarelli – and the group also features trumpet work from Jon Faddis and Lew Soloff. There's a nice flow here – a relaxed soul jazz vibe that fits the sound of Stitt very well – and the album features four long tracks – "Duke's Place", "Perdido", "Little Suede Shoes", and a nice version of "Samba De Orpheo", with tight snapping drums. Weather ReportHeavy Weather ... CD
CBS, 1977. Used ... $2.99
One of the biggest hits ever for Weather Report – thanks to Joe Zawinul's leadoff track "Birdland" – one of those tunes that entered the canon immediately, and saw countless covers pop up over the years – kind of a rare thing for a jazz tune at this point in time! The track's driving, building energy shows a newly focused side to Weather Report – one that's traded some of the spacier, more experimental moments of the past for a dynamic energy that still puts them ahead of most other 70s fusion supergroups. The presence of Jaco Pastorius is felt quite strongly here – especially on the way the colors ebb and flow up from the bottom – and the way that Jaco's using his bass with the energy of a solo jazz guitar! Alex Acuna and Manolo Badrena are on percussion, and Wayne Shorter's reeds still crackle with a nice degree of soul – on titles that include "Harlequin", "Rumba Mama", "A Remark You Made", "Teen Town", "Palladium", "Havona", and "The Juggler". Dark genius from the always-amazing Miles Davis Quintet of the 60s – a set that's a bit more subtle than some of the group's other efforts, but no less powerful – and virtually a blueprint for countless changes to come in jazz during the next few decades! The interplay of Davis' trumpet, Wayne Shorter's tenor, and Herbie Hancock's piano is worth the price of admission alone – a force that seems to flow of its own direction, pulled three ways equally, but always emerging as a sound greater than its parts. And adding in the subtle pulse of Ron Carter on bass and nearly melodic drums of Tony Williams, the sound is even more incredible – a well-crafted and evocative sound that's far more than jazz! Okka Disk, 1999. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful testament of how much of an impact the Chicago scene of the 90's is having on the worldwide avant jazz world! This set of live duets was recorded during a time when German pianist Georg Grawe had moved to Chicago to take advantage of the city's rich jazz scene – and when Evan Parker was visiting the city to perform in the now-legendary Empty Bottle Jazz & Improvised Music Festival. The CD captures a performance that is only the second time these two greats have played together, and it was recorded in the acoustically beautiful Unity Temple, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Despite their lack of experience together, these two masters dovetail nicely in performance, and the set of "Unity Variations" is another feather in the cap of the great Okka Disk label. Handsomely packaged, too – with a nice cover based around Albert Oehlen's painting "What The Critic Sees". CD

Panart/Craft, Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 5LP ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of records – a series of albums that forever changed the sound of Latin music around the world! These five sets were all cooked up in the changing Cuban scene at the start of the 60s – where musicians were getting looser and freer, with a sound that was quite different than the tighter big bands of a few years before – strongly influenced by changes in American jazz, including the jam session mode that was big on record during the 50s! In a way, these sides are an answer to that – as they feature all-star musicians coming together on long, more spontaneous tracks – often in smaller combos with heavy influence on rhythm, and lots of work from the key soloists on the dates. Each record has a different leader, but often some of the same musicians – and there's some especially great work on trumpet and tenor by other members of the group – at a level that went on to influence the small combo sound of artists like Joe Cuba, the grooves of the Latin Soul/boogaloo scene, and even the all-star American groups like the Alegre All Stars and Fania All stars in years to come. Records 1 and 2 feature leadership by Julio Gutierrez, record 3 is led by Nino Rivera, record 4 (the most famous) is led by bassist Cachao, and record 5 is led by flautist Fajardo. Subtle, spacious sounds from two understated masters of jazz – bassist Red Mitchell and pianist Hank Jones – both working here in a superbly-recorded setting! The tunes are mostly standards, but they've got a warmth and personality that could only come from top talents like this – all the careful, thoughtful motions on the keyboard that Jones always has in his music – really augmented by the soundshaping that Mitchell brings to his bass! Titles include "A Child Is Born", "Wee", "Gone With The Wind", "But Beautiful", "I'll Remember April", "Like Someone In Love", and "Mean To Me" CD

✨✧ Sonny Criss & Kenny DorhamBopmasters (Sonny Criss At The Crossroads/Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets) ... LP
ABC, 1956/1959. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... $6.99
An excellent set that brings together 2 rare albums from the 50s! Sonny Criss At The Crossroads is an obscure 1959 session recorded by Criss in Chicago, and it's one of the only jazz records ever on the Peacock label, which put out mostly gospel and blues. Criss is joined by Joe Scott on piano, and the Chicago rhythm section of Bob Cranshaw and Walter Perkins, both fresh from the MJT+3. Great tone, warm solos, and a nice vibe throughout. Tracks include "You Don't Know", "Butts Delight", "Softly", and "Sylvia". Kenny Dorham & The Jazz Prophets is a fantastic lost hard bop album, featuring Kenny Dorham leading a tight quintet that stars J.R. Monterose on Tenor. Monterose and Dorham are great, and really open up on the 5 tracks on the album – all of which are long enough to give the players plenty of room to blow. Probably one of the best jazz records ever recorded for ABC, and with the titles "The Prophet", "DX", "Tahitian Suite", and "Blues Elegante". LP, Vinyl record album

Monday Michiru & OthersCo-Collaborator Works Of Monday Michiru ... CD
Universal (Japan), 2007. New Copy ... $13.99
Great grooves from Monday Michiru – a Soul Source collection that brings together a wealth of Monday's dancefloor work with a host of other artists! The tunes here are all upbeat and nicely grooving – very much that soulful Soul Source dancefloor vibe – and the package is a nice reminder that although Monday's been hitting some great mellow notes of late, she's also still one of the best club-oriented talents from the Japanese scene. A number of these tracks are from hard to find singles, and collaborators here include Da Lata, Jazztronik, Soul Source, Masters At Work, Joe Claussell, and Mondo Grosso. Titles include "Butterfly" by Mondo Grosso with Monday Michiru, "You Make Me (Studio Apartment rmx)" by Monday Michiru, "The Right Time (Jephte's King Street vokal)" by Monday Michiru, "The Real Thing" by Soul Source Productions with Monday Michiru, "Tiger Eyes (English version)" by Jazztronik with Monday Michiru, "New Beginnings" by Monday Michiru with Da Lata, "ADDP" by M-Flo with Monday Michiru, "Sunshine After The Rain (MAW 12" mix)" by Monday Michiru, and "Higher (Spiritual Life voc)" by Monday Michiru with Joe Claussell. Situation & OthersNang Presents New Masters Series Vol 5 ... CD
Nang (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $11.99
Situation really do a great job of transforming other folks' tunes here – so much so that the results are really a lot more their own than any sort of familiar remix modes – which is the CD is more of a full album by the band, then just a collection of cuts! Contemporary rhythms and production are mixed with a range of sonic sources that go back to the early 80s – and the album has some of the warmer, more soulful elements that warrant its release on the Nang label too. Titles include Situation reworks/remakes of "Fade To Grey" by Visage, "Jankos Drug" by Dark Punk Hippies, "RU Ready For This" by Fabiolous Barker, "I Got You" by George Kelly, "I Ran" by A Flock Of Seagulls, "Strange Kind Of Love" by Love & Money, "Hold On" by Rubber Lips, "Jealous Girl" by Pure Conjecture, "Don't You Worry About A Thing" by JazzyFunk, and "Perfect System" by Julian Sanza and Andre Espeut. ✨✧ Jack DeJohnette & Foday Musa SusoMusic From The Hearts Of The Masters ... CD
Kindred Rhythm/Golden Beams, 2002. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Beautiful duets between American jazzman Jack DeJohnette and legendary African musician Foday Musa Suso – done in a style that makes the album one of DeJohnette's most interesting in years! The sound is as spare as you'd expect – with Jack working on a standard drum kit, and Suso on eventide eclipse and boomerang, providing rhythmically plucked lines that dance along with the rhythms that flow from the drums. There's an earthy feel here that's really nice, but never cliched – and titles include "Worldwide Funk", "Ocean Wave", "Ancient Techno", "Party", "Mountain Love Dance", and "Voice Of The Kudrus". CD

✨✧ New MastersoundsRenewable Energy (with bonus download) ... LP
One Note (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The New Mastersounds must have their own source of renewable energy – as they've been giving us great records for many years now, and still are strongly on top of their game! The core quartet is driven by the funky drums of Simon Allen, the bumping bass of Pete Shand, the sweet keyboards of Joe Tatton, and the always-sharp guitar of Eddie Roberts – and this time around, they recorded in New Orleans, with help from guest trumpet, tenor, and percussion! There's a diversity to the instrumentals that few other funk groups might venture – especially one as classic as this – so that sometimes the keyboards are in the lead, sometimes Eddie Roberts is taking the whole thing over on guitar, and sometimes the whole group is coming down strongly on the groove. Adryon De Leon sings on "Gonna Be Just Me" – and all other tunes are instrumentals, with titles that include "Hip City", "Chicago Girl", "Tantalus", "Pudding & Pie", "Funk 49", "Green Was Beautiful", and "Living That Jazz Life". Sami LinnaSami Linna Quartet ... CD
Timmion (Finland), 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
Sami Linna might look like some sort of Tyrolean hipster on the cover of the album, but his guitar has been behind a fair bit of great funky work on the Timmion label in recent years – which is why it's great to hear him up front here in the lead! A bit like when Eddie Roberts stepped out from the New Mastersounds to record his initial solo records, the Sami heard here is definitely different – jazzier, with a lot more complexity to his guitar work – at a level that, if the whole thing were issued back in the 60s (and with a different cover) would have had Linna standing strongly next to the greats of that generation. His tone is superb, his phrasing is wonderful, and there's a clean jazzy vibe to the record that's very different than other Timmion funk and soul records – as Linna plays in a drums, Hammond, and some mighty nice tenor sax. Tracks are all long – and titles include "Umoya", "Dreamsville", "Black Mountain", "Mode For Tomorrow", and "Clowns". CD

Hank MobleyJazz Message of Hank Mobley Volume 2 (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Savoy (Japan), 1956. Used ... $24.99
Excellent early hardbop material from Hank Mobley – recorded in a slightly looser style than his Blue Note work, but essential 50s work nonetheless! The album's got a relaxed, open feel – almost the blowing session mode used with Mobley on Savoy, and a great illustration of Hank's warmly collaborative talents in the company of some of the best players of his generation. The album features 2 groups – with either Lee Morgan or Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Jones or Barry Harris on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums – working together wonderfully on tunes that include "Thad's Blues", "Doug's Minor B'ok", and "Space Flight". Chance HaydenGet Somethin' ... CD
Ropeadope/Atlanta, 2018. New Copy ... $8.99 14.99
Tight guitar from Chance Hayden – a player who definitely knows how to get a lot of color and tone out of his instrument, even while picking out a sharp note solo! There's a dexterity in Hayden's style that's clearly inspired by the more proficient blues guitarists in recent generations – but the overall sound here is much more jazz funk, with a core quartet that features keyboards, bass, and drums – all in a nicely lean sound that allows Chance to shine in the spotlight at a level that's a bit like Eddie Roberts (of New Mastersounds fame) on some of his solo sets. Jarrod Lawson provides guest vocals on a great version of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other tracks include "Hung Up On My Baby", "Get Somethin", "Matrix", "Take The Call", "Kissing My Love", "Many Disguises", and "You Mother You". ✨✧ Mr FingersWhat About This Love (kenlou mix, gonve mix, luv dub, MAW dub, inst) ... 12-inch
MCA, 1992. Very Good (pic cover)... Out Of Stock
An excellent jazzy number – with all of Larry Heard's sweet keyboards firmly in place, but a tempo that has the cut moving at a much slower pace than some of his earlier house tracks. The cut works perfectly as a mellow stepper – and the flipside has a "dub" mix that we like even better than the main one, along with plenty of great Masters At Work mixes. 12-inch, Vinyl record
