✨✧ Marquis HillNew Gospel Revisited ... CD
Edition, 2022. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The musical vision of Marquis Hill just keeps on getting more and more vivid with each new album – and even here, on a live date with a title that evokes a previous record, the trumpeter is clearly pushing forth to some great territory with his music! We've loved the warm, majestic sounds that Hill can bring to his own trumpet – but he's also really opening up as a composer, and working with a soaring group feel that's delivered here by a lineup that includes the great Joel Ross on vibes, Walter Smith III on tenor, James Francies on piano, Harish Raghavan on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums. Titles include "The Thump", "Perpetual", "New Portrait Of Fola", "Lullaby", "Autumn", "New Gospel", "The Believer", and "Law & Order". CD

Makaya McCravenDeciphering The Message ... CD
Blue Note, 2021. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
A really special album from our hometown hero Makaya McCraven – a set that's the drummer's debut on Blue Note, and which also has him bringing that label some of the magic that he's been cooking up for International Anthem! If you know Makaya's other records, you'll know that he works in a blend of jazz instrumentation and editing – a style that's much more sophisticated than previous "jazz remix" modes – as McCraven always has live jazz instrumentation at the core, but then uses editing to rework ideas after the performance. Here, the music is a blend of older classics from the Blue Note catalog, juxtaposed with contributions from Joel Ross on vibes, Jeff Parker and Matt Gold on guitar, Greg Ward on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and De'Sean Jones on tenor and flute – a really well-chosen array of players who flesh out Makaya's ideas in a beautiful way. Titles include "Wail Bait", "Frank's Tune", "Slice Of The Top", "Sunset", "Ecaroh", "Black Rhythm Happening", "Monaco", and "Mr Jin". CD

Makaya McCravenIn These Times ... CD
International Anthem/Nonesuch, 2022. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Maybe the most majestic album that Makaya McCraven has recorded to date – and that's really saying a lot, given the power of his music on previous records! This time around, the group is large, and the performance is more organic than some of the more mixed/produced sessions that Makaya has given us – and great as those records have been, there's a sense of power here that really places McCraven strongly in the Chicago legacy of the 20th Century – a jazz spectrum that includes Eddie Harris, Ramsey Lewis, Charles Stepney, the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and so many other musical giants! The mix of instrumentation is almost like some Chess/Cadet session from the end of the 60s – but Makaya still adds in some samples and electronics next to his acoustic work on percussion, drums, and a variety of other instruments – next to Jeff Parker on guitar, Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Junius Paul on bass – all tremendous players and strong leaders in their own right – working here to make a special sort of magic with McCraven. There's other voices on the set too – more violins, cello, alto, tenor, piano, and other sounds – on titles that include "So Ubuji", "Seventh String", "This Place That Place", "The Fours", "Dream Another", "High Fives", "The Knew Untitled", and "In These Times". Junius PaulIsm ... CD
International Anthem, 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $11.99 12.99
A fantastic record from the contemporary Chicago scene – one that both gives bassist Junius Paul his first showcase as a leader, and underscores the richly collaborative energy in which the musician works! The set was recorded at various points in the Windy City underground – with Paul at the help of a shifting lineup that includes Makaya McCraven on drums, Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Justin Dillard on piano and keyboards, Jim Baker on piano and Arp, Isaiah Spencer on drums, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Tomeika Reid on cello – with most musicians also handling other instruments too, in a continuation of an AACM legacy – on a record that's then edited by Makaya McCraven, in the best International Anthem mode! The music is jazz, but of the most forward-thinking type – and titles include "Ma & Dad", "Fred Anderson & A Half", "Twelve Eighteen West", "Georgia", "Spocky Chainsey Has Re-Emerged", "The One Who Endures", "Baker's Dozen", "View From The Moon", "You Are Free To Choose", "Paris", "Collant Denier", and "Sprouts". Joel RossParable Of The Poet ... LP
Blue Note, 2022. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 29.99
The "poet" in the title is very well-put here – as vibist Joel Ross continues to mature into one of the most distinctive artists in contemporary jazz – not just a unique player on his chosen instrument of the vibes, but also a leader who can take a session like this and really make something different and distinct! Ross' vibes are certainly part of the album's appeal – but the whole thing is more of a larger vision in jazz – equally well-shaped by the contributions of Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Maria Grand on tenor, and Kalia Vandever on trombone – horn players who don't push the album to large ensemble status, but who have this way of coloring in the sophisticated sentiments that Ross brings to his music – maybe much in the way that some of the key Bill Lee soundtracks can take other jazz players and use them to illuminate his ideas in really wonderful ways. The set also features Sean Mason on piano – an artist who's as careful in tone as Ross – plus Rick Rosato on bass, Craig Weinrib on drums, and guest flute on one track from Gabrielle Garo. Titles include "Guilt", "Choices", "The Impetus", "Doxology", "Benediction", and "Prayer" LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Joel RossKing Maker ... CD
Blue Note, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An incredible debut from vibist Joel Ross – an artist who's already given us great moments on records with Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, and others – but who's completely his own man here right from the start! Ross instantly emerges as a major creative force – leading the combo, composing the music, and co-producing the set – with a rich vision for the future of vibes in jazz, but one that also carries the depths of previous generations – especially in the way that Joel approaches a tune, with a subtle sense of gravity that makes each new selection a very powerful statement. The group features Immanuel Wilkins on alto, Jeremy Corren on piano, Benjamin Tiberio on bass, and Jeremy Dutton on drums – a tight quintet who work with a great sense of sympathy – and singer Gretchen Parlato also joins the group at one point. Titles include "Prince Lynn's Twin", "The Grand Struggle Against Fear", "Freda's Disposition", "Yana", "With Who Do You Learn Trust", and "Ill Relations". CD

✨✧ Marcus MillerLaid Black ... CD
Blue Note, 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Marcus Miller does a nice job of bridging two generations of electric jazz here – still very strongly in his best mode on the bass, with those nimble funky fingers that have pleased us for years – but also opening up the door to some more contemporary influences and guest artists on the session – all of which makes for a nicely fresh space for Miller's classic sound! The bass is wonderfully upfront in the mix – with a presence that's as beautiful on the lyrical moments as it is on the funky ones – and the instrumentation and lineup shifts a bit from track to track, all with a nicer edge than some of Miller's smoother efforts of the past. The set features work from Marquis Hill and Russell Gunn on trumpet, Kirk Whalum on flute and tenor, Trombone Shorty on trombone, Brett Williams on keyboards, and Selah Sue, Jonathan Butler, and Take 6 on vocals. Titles include "Trip Trap", "No Limit", "Untamed", "Someone To Love", "Keep Em Runnin", "Preacher's Kid", "Sublimity Bunny's Dream", and "7T's". CD
