Mark TurnerYam Yam (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Criss Cross/Anagram, 1994. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
A really wonderful early album from tenorist Mark Turner – a set that's got all those dark moments and sharp edges of his later recordings, but in a setting that's nicely warm at times – and which has Turner coming across with a bit more soul! There's a special sort of mojo in the record – darkness mixed with redemption, as Turner carves his way over beautiful lines from the rest of the group – a quintet that features Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Brad Mehldau on piano, Larry Grenadier on bass, and Jorge Rossy on drums. Melhdau is especially nice next to Turner here – and the group are also joined by additional tenorists Seamus Black and Terence Dean on the title "Zurich". Other titles include "Isolation", "Subtle Tragedy", "Yam Yam", "Cubism", "Tune Number One", and a version of "Moment's Notice". LP, Vinyl record album
(First time on vinyl – mastered by Bernie Grundman!)

SF Jazz CollectiveLive 2010 – 7th Annual Concert Tour (3CD set) ... CD
SF Jazz, 2010. Used 3 CDs ... $24.99
The songs of Horace Silver never grow old – they've had a special sort of soulful energy from the early Blue Note years onward – really kept alive here in a set of great performances by this all-star group, who also mix in some excellent originals of their own! The lineup is rock-solid – an octet, but one who swings with the dexterity of a quartet – thanks to the skills of Miguel Zenon on alto, Mark Turner on tenor, Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Stefon Harris on vibes, Robin Eubanks on trombone, Edward Simon on piano, Matt Penman on bass, and Eric Harland on drums. The vibes are a great addition to the Horace Silver sound – as the group make their way through versions of "Cape Verdean Blues", "Sister Sadie", "Peace", "Song For My Father", "Senor Blues", "The Lady From Johannesburg", and "Baghdad Blues" - plus originals that include "Triple Threat", "Collective Presence", "More Than Meets The Ear", and "Harlandia". ✨✧ Tom HarrellTrip ... CD
High Note, 2014. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Some of the densest, most powerful music we've heard from trumpeter Tom Harrell in years – and that's saying a lot, given how much we've loved all his other recent records! Tom's working here in a very spare setting – no piano, just a quartet format with Mark Turner on tenor, alongside bass and drums – a mode that really has Harrell's horn out front, often intertwining with Turner – as each then break out into these stunningly conceived solos. Both rhythm players break out tremendously – balancing out the sound of the record equally with the horns – and Ugonna Okegwo plays bass and Adam Cruz handles the drums. The set has a long suite in the center – "The Adventures Of A Quixotic Character" – and is bracketed by equally great numbers that include "Sunday", "Cycle", "Coastline", "After The Game Is Over", and "There". ✨✧ Immanuel WilkinsOmega ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic debut from saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins – a record that's maybe been a long time coming, given the different scenes and settings in which Wilkins has played in recent years – and a set that brims over with a sense of expectation right from the very first note! Wilkins is fantastic on alto – blowing with a fleetness and fluidity that mark a very unique voice on the instrument – but the sound of the record is one that comes strongly from all the elements hitting at once – rich colors from the piano of Micah Thomas, deft bass work from Daryl Johns, and this balance of openness and focus from the drums of Kweku Sumbry – a bold rhythmist who really helps give the album a special shape. Tunes are all original, with a subtle power throughout – and titles include "Grace & Mercy", "Ferguson", "The Dreamer", "Warriors", "Mary Turner", and "Omega". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ MTBConsenting Adults ... CD
Criss Cross (Netherlands), 1994. Used ... Out Of Stock
You might not recognize the group's name, but you'll definitely know the three leaders – pianist Brad Mehldau, tenorist Mark Turner, and guitarist Peter Bernstein – coming together here in a session that's a real standout in the catalogs of all three musicians! Brad Mehldau somehow seems to have more of an edge, Mark Turner is warmer than usual, and Peter Bernstein makes his guitar ring out with bold colors and tones that really seem to hold the whole thing together! Remaining quintet members include Larry Grenadier on bass and Leon Parker on drums – both players who deserve equal billing with the M, T, and B – and titles include two takes on the great Jackie McLean tune "Little Melonae" – plus a version of Wayne Shorter's "Limbo, Horace Silver's "Peace", and the original tunes "Afterglow", "Phatasm", and "Belief". VariousCan You Feel It Vol 3 – Modern Soul, Disco, & Boogie 1976 to 1985 ... CD
Tramp (Germany), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $12.99 19.99
A soaring blend of rare club tracks from the glory days of the American disco underground – music that was cut in the deep shadows of the mainstream market at the time, and which has gone on to have a lot longer staying power too! The cuts here are all from very obscure releases on tiny labels around the country – most so small, the records were issued on 7" singles, not the usual 12" club DJ release – which has made them even more overlooked in the passing decades, given that so many collectors of this sort of music are digging for the larger format! Yet interest in rare club from the pre-house years has never been stronger – and a set like this is a great way to glimpse a scene that was out of reach even to most folks who were around at the time – a smoking set of 17 groovers that include "Can You Dig It" by Teakwood, "Bay Trippin" by Parnassus, "Come Along With Me & Party" by Monofide, "I Wanna Dance" by Compton Hodge, "Feel In" by The Unit III, "My Woman My Woman" by Joshua Jackson, "She's The One" by Nature, "Bronco Queen" by Van Buren, and "Sport City Rock" by Earl Turner. ✨✧ Oxford AmericanOxford American No 115 – Up South Music Issue Vol 23 (with bonus CD) ... Magazine
University Of Central Arkansas, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic entry in the Oxford American Southern Music Issue tradition – one that still focuses on music from the south, but which also traces its legacy moving northwards as well – with an especially strong look at shifts in soulful music styles that were part of the Great Migration! As always with the publication, the presentation and prose is fantastic – top-shelf writers giving really sensitive treatment to the topics they take on – in articles on Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Johnny Bristol and Al Green, Lowell George, Mary Lou Williams, Carolyn Franklin, bounce music, the Checkerboard Lounge, and many others. There's an especially nice look at Quincy Jones by Terence Blanchard, and photography by Kwame Brathwaite – and this issue marks the return of the bonus CD for the publication – with 20 well-chosen cuts by artists who include Shirley Horn, Mary Lou Williams, Betty Dvis, Johnnie Frierson, Particle Kid, Sunny War, John Doe, Black Pumas, and many others. Magazine
(Covers are variable in either Tina Turner or Aretha Franklin – both great covers, but we have no control over which ones we'll be getting.)

Ike & Tina TurnerRiver Deep – Mountain High ... LP
A&M, 1966. Very Good+ ... $34.99
A legendary pairing of two key 60s pop talents – the soulful sounds of Ike & Tina Turner, and the soaring production styles of Phil Spector! The album's quite different than some of the grittier Turner projects of the time – lots of full orchestrations and strings, mixed with the rougher rhythms you'd usually hear from Ike – a blend that's surprisingly great, and helps push Tina's vocals into wonderfully mature territory – a bit like the mix of deep soul and class that you'd get from Etta James on mid-60s Chess Records! The album's a feather in the cap of both Spector and Turner – and titles include "River Deep Mountain High", "I Idolize You", "A Love Like Yours", "Such A Fool For You", "I'll Never Need More Than This", "A Fool In Love", and "Hold On Baby". Weird cover, too – with photography by Dennis Hopper! LP, Vinyl record album
(Brown label pressing with Phil Spector logo. Vinyl has just a few light sleeve marks. Cover has a small cutout hole, George Harrison hype sticker, and light aging along the opening.)

✨✧ Ike & Tina TurnerWhat You Hear Is What You Get – Live At Carnegie Hall ... LP
United Artists, 1971. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The Ike & Tina Turner Revue shakes the foundation at Carnegie Hall on April Fools Day, 1971! There's a good reason for there being so many live albums by Ike & Tina – it's because they're damn great on stage – and this NYC set is a strong showcase for The Ikettes and The Kings Of Rhythm, too! The group was riding a peak wave of popularity around this time, and they cover a wide variety of songs in a set that's masterfully-paced – starting out slow and building up intensity as it goes! Titles include the Ikettes-led "Piece Of My Heart" and "Everyday People", the thunderous Tina intro "Doin' The Tina Turner", "Sweet Soul Music", "Proud Mary", "I Smell Trouble", "Ike's Tune", "I Want To Take You Higher", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", "Respect" and more. LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has some surface and edge wear, and a bit of marker.)
