Mark IVSigns Of A Dying Love ... CD
Cordial (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $12.99
A fantastic later chapter of Mark IV – that sublime vocal group who recorded for Mercury in the early 70s, then seemingly dropped off the recording radar! Turns out, the group were still working hard and sounding great – as you'll hear in this fantastic collection of unreleased material from the mid 70s – work that still has them sounding superb, in tight group formation – with stellar harmonies on the mellow cuts that dominate the set, and equally great vocals on the album's groovers too! Production is laidback, but never sloppy – these aren't demos, but really well-recorded tracks that have a feel that's especially like some of the best east coast group soul of the period – really continuing the sweet soul legacy of some of the group's more famous contemporaries. Titles include "I Got Everything", "Signs Of A Dying Love", "How I Feel For You", "Another Day Another Dollar", "Hang Ups", "I Knew It Wouldn't Last", "All My Friends", "I've Been Lucky", and "Give Me Just A Little" – plus some instrumentals too. Mark IVSigns Of A Dying Love (orig 12" mix)/How I Feel For You (Ourra mix, DJ Spinna mix, Sean P mix) ... 12-inch
Cordial (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy (pic cover)... $12.99
A fantastic cut from the great Mark IV – a tune that has a funky bassline at the core, but which still comes off with all the charm of their sweet soul side at its best – thanks to a strong lead vocal with a really heartbreaking vibe! The Ourra mix of "How I Feel For You" has keyboards that are a fair bit more 80s than the group's usual sound – but Spinna takes things back to the 70s with a righteous, upbeat style – and Sean P somehow makes the tune sound even funkier than before! 12-inch, Vinyl record

WhoLive at Leeds ... CD
MCA, 1970. Used ... $3.99
A landmark live set from The Who – a record that offers the group with a blistering intensity that blows away all their other studio albums of the time! Although offered during the Who's Tommy-era expansion into broader themes and more complicated instrumentation, the album's a real return to basics – and features a guitar-heavy version of the group performing a number of older rock n roll classics like "Summertime Blues", "Shakin All Over", and "Young Man Blues" – plus really extended jamming takes on their own "My Generation" and "Magic Bus", and a searing 2 minute take on "Substitute" that's probably everything you ever need to know about The Jam! Jimmy LyonsPush Pull ... CD
Hat Hut/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1979. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... $15.99
Alto saxophonist Jimmy Lyons had a legendary run of performances on record with Cecil Taylor – but he sounds equally amazing here as a leader – given the space to really stretch out in a 3LP set that brings together a landmark live performance from 1978! Lyons works here with some lesser-known names – a quintet that includes Karen Borca on bassoon, Hayes Burnett on bass, Munner Bernard Fennell on cello, and Roger Blank on drums – but all players really catch the fire from his horn, and open up in a way that starts with loft jazz inspiration, then really soars to the stratosphere! The live setting of the album – recorded in a cinema – brings a really great quality of "space" to the overall production – and you can really feel Lyons and the group working together as their sounds and performance echo throughout the theater. Titles include the 32 minute "Mary Mary" – plus "Tortuga", "Breakout", "After You Left", and "Push Pull". CD

Mark De Clive-LoweRenegades ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2011. Used ... $5.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe is back, and more brilliant than ever – working here on a set that's overflowing with superstar talent, and which cooks even more than some of his previous albums! All the grooves we've always loved from Mark are firmly in place – the wicked beats, cosmic rhythms, and spacious keyboards – but there's also a nice new focus too, one that brings in a lot deeper soul to most tunes – thanks in part to vocals from an array of guests who include Omar, Nia Andrews, Tawiah, Ovasoul7, Bembe Segue, Sheila E, and Sandra Nkake! The album's stuffed with tuneful numbers – more great singles than most other artists would hope for in a single album – and Mark still keeps things a bit cosmic at points too, with some great space jazz keyboards. Titles include "Get Started", "Under Orders", "The Why", "Everything", "Emergency", "Alabi", "Push", and "Hooligan". CD

Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... $9.99 13.98
A beautiful second volume in the Heritage series from keyboard genius Mark De Clive Lowe – and one that we like even more than the first! The music here has the strong spiritual currents of the previous set, but also brings in more of the cosmic, electronic modes that we knew in Mark's initial music – a great blend of jazz with inventive rhythms, wide-ranging keyboard sounds, and even some live electronics – recorded in concert, but with the complexity of a more dynamic studio production! Other players include Teodross Avery on tenor, Josh Johnson on alto, Carlos Nino on percussion, Brando Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – and titles include "Isan", "Ryugu Jo", "Bushido II", "Mizugaki", "Mirai No Rekishi", and "O Edo Nihonbashi". VariousWattstax – The Living Word ... CD
Stax, 1972. Used 2 CDs ... $4.99
A landmark double-live album that was easily one of the most important soul record moments of the 70s! The concert was an all-star event held in LA to celebrate the anniversary of the Watts riots – but it features a killer lineup of talent from the roster of Stax Records – by then a proud independent with more than enough power to spread a nationwide message from Memphis to Los Angeles without any trouble! The record is nicely segmented – so that it offers up mini "sets" by each artist – really recreating the feel of the event, at a level that lived on in countless living rooms long after the concert was over. Titles include "Son Of Shaft/Feel It" and "I Can't Turn You Loose" by The Bar-Kays; "Ain't No Sunshine" by Isaac Hayes, "I Don't Know What This World Is Coming To" and "Hearsay" by The Soul Children, "I Like What You're Doing To Me" and "Gee Whiz" by Carla Thomas; "The Breakdown" and "Do The Funky Penguin" by Rufus Thomas, "Killing Floor" and "Angel Of Mercy" by Albert King"; "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" by The Staple Singers; and "Knock On Wood" by Eddie Floyd. Also includes 2 studio tracks recorded after the show – "Oh La De Da" by The Staple Singers, and "Lay Your Loving On Me" by Eddie Floyd. CD

A record with a very striking title – and a wonderful sound to match – this warm, fluid blend of the vocals of Nia Andrews and a rich keyboard-heavy environment – one that features a fair bit of contributions from Mark De Clive-Lowe! Nia also plays piano and keyboards, and it's clear that she's an equally comfortable instrumentalist – and often envisions her vocals wrapped around her keys – yet never in a way that's trying to hide her singing, as Andrews is clearly one hell of a vocalist in the making! Neko CaseFox Confessor Brings The Flood ... CD
Anti, 2006. Used ... $2.99
Neko Case at her best, which is pretty much where she's been for the majority of her solo career – so it's saying something to mention that this might be her finest record! There's an artful, but still introspective poetic edge to her songwriting that really came out in fullest form for the first time on this one. Each record she made after The Virginian took a pretty remarkable creative steps away from that album's (still great) alt country into something deeper, and this was the biggest step of all. A modern classic. Includes "Margaret Vs Pauline", "Star Witness", "Hold On, Hold On", "A Widow's Toast", "That Teenage Feeling", "John Saw That Number", "Dirty Knife", "Maybe Sparrow", "At Last The Needle Has Landed" and more. Dexter StorySeasons ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2012. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful project from the contemporary underground scene in LA – a record that shares lots of energy and musicians with recordings by Build An Ark and Life Force Trio! Dexter Story's the main force behind the record, but the set's a strongly collaborative effort – and features keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe, flute from Derf Reklaw, strings from Mighel Atwood-Ferguson, vocals from Dwight Trible, and key studio work from Carlos Nino! Story's vocals and overall conception are wonderful – soaring and soulful, with some slight cosmic touches that give the record a bit more crackle than related projects – a sound that's still steeped in spiritual jazz elements, yet which also really opens up as the set rolls on. There's a wonderful sense of variety to the tracks – due to the shifting lineup – but the overall feel is still very cohesive, and an amazing demonstration of Story's bold musical vision. Titles include "Seasons", "Into The Hour", "Love Force Trio (part 1)", "Underway", "Water Bearer", "Paddle Boat", "Bloop Drip", "Gyre Song", "As Is", "God Sun", and "Suijin". CD

Dwight TribleMothership ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 27.99
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". Scott WalkerStretch/We Had It All ... CD
BGO (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy ... $12.99
A pair of great early 70s efforts from the always unpredictable Scott Walker – 1973's Stretch and We Had It All from '74! Both records are Scott's tribute to modern country, with songs written by Jerry Reed, Tom T Hall, Billy Joe Shaver and others like that, along with tunes by writers Scott had covered before, such as Randy Newman and Jimmy Webb. Stretch may have seemed like a pretty remarkable creative stretch from the kind of haunting emotionalism and soaring, darkness-tinged pop of his earlier solo efforts, but there's a pretty direct line in some ways. His inimitably expressive voice carries the mood, with folksier touches to the songcraft and production paired with the occasionally lusher strings and other grand touches. We Had It All has a similar vibe, with Scott pulling off touching country balladry and rollicking stripped down jams just as well. 21 tracks in all: Sunshine", "Just One Smile", "Use Me", "Where Love Has Died", "Low Down Freedom", "We Had It All", "What Ever Happened To Saturday Night", "Old Five And Dimers Like Me", "Delta Dawn" and more. Pianist Sophia Domanchic gets some wonderfully freewheeling company here – the bass of Mark Helias and drums of Andrew Cyrille – both perfect accompaniment for her long, lively lines on piano! The tunes are all quite long – most stretch past the 10 minute mark – and have a very open, expressive feel – a way of being quite bold on the keyboard, yet still managing to swing, too – the kind of groove that could only come with such accomplished rhythm players like these. The set's got a sparkle and charm that's undeniable – and both Helias and Cyrille get in some beautiful solo moments that are quite inventive. Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! BadbadnotgoodIV (with download) ... LP
Innovative Leisure, 2016. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $19.99 20.98
Badbadnotgood have always been pretty damn great, actually – and never better than on album IV – a remarkable step forward for the group! As ever, they take inspiration from some of the best prog, jazz, funk (and proggy jazz funk...they blend) of the 70s and beyond, but weave it into fairly distinctive and genuinely fun modern sound. It's built to last, too –we're sure be able to come back to their work in a couple decades and it'll still work! IV finds them with the confidence to trade in some fairly subtle, smoothed out moments between to more boisterous ones, and they're more dexterous in the instrumentation – especially in the horns, keys and percussion – but some great vibes, strings, flute and more when the mood calls. Includes the great vocal track "Time Moves Slow" with Sam Herring of Future Islands, "And That, Too", "Lavender", "IV", "Chompy's Paradise", "Structure No. 3", "Cashmere", "Hyssops Of Love" and more. Beautifully heavy sounds from Black Market Brass – a group who started out with more of a global funk approach, but who emerge here with the intensity of some lost funky soundtrack – all with the sort of edge you might expect from the cover! The style here is really revolutionary – unlike anything else we've ever heard from a group with "brass" in their name – in part because the group has some very cool distortion on the keyboards and guitar, which gives those electric elements a very sinister sound next to the straight ahead fire of the horns – served up with really hard-driving rhythms throughout, in a way that seems to pull together older traditions of Afro Funk, Nola Brass, and even some of the southern college bands – but all with a very 21st Century vision. Nina Blackwood/Mark Goodman/Alan Hunter/Martha Quin/Gavin EdwardsVJ – The Unplugged Adventures Of MTV's First Wave ... Book
Atria, 2013. New Copy ... $5.99 17.00
The first big voices of MTV tell the tales of the early days of the influential music network – as Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter, and Martha Quinn all spent quite a bit of time as on air "VJs" – which was the music television version of a radio jock! Back at the start, long before they started making their own shows, MTV was a showcase for short video clips by a huge variety of music artists – and the VJs would announce between videos, provide news content, and eventually grow into a role that had the network wielding surprisingly strong political power with young audiences by the end of the 80s. Writer Gavin Edwards helps shape the stories of the four VJs, but still retains their individual voices – as the book presents a few dozen short chapters, on a variety of subjects and moments in MTV history – with each VJ contributing thoughts and memories, almost like a roundtable discussion. Uptown/MCA, 1992. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The landmark debut of Mary J Blige – a record that not only did a great job of blending underground hip hop and mainstream soul sensibilities – but maybe also opened the door for the Neo Soul revolution to come! Mary comes on here with a fresh new vision in female soul – one that's informed by the youth and upfront energy of the hip hop female MCs that preceded her – but with a depth that also makes Blige sort of the new Aretha Franklin for the end of the century – a deep soul singer, but one who's equally at home in the streets and the studio. Important production is by a young Sean Combs – some of his first great work on record – and the set also features guest appearances from Busta Rhymes, Little Shawn, Grand Puba, Erick Sermon, and CL Smooth. Titles include "Real Love", "Sweet Thing", "Love No Limit", "You Remind Me", "Reminisce", "What's The 411", "I Don't Want To Do Anything", "Changes I've Been Going Through", "Slow Down", and "My Love". The album's recorded in Paris, where Dee Dee's spent an awful lot of time over the years, and you can feel that familiarity in the way she presents the material – easily slipping back into a jazz vocal mode, working before an appreciative audience without any thoughts of crossover popularity, hitting that proud, strong, and free style that's been carrying her well for a number of years now. Brother AhhDivine Music (Sea/Meditation/Searching) (5LP set) ... LP
Manufactured, 1978/1981/1985. New Copy 5LP ... $89.99
Three never-issued albums from Brother Ah – the enigmatic musician who may be known best for his work with Sun Ra, and his rare album on Strata East! Both of those moments date from earlier years, though – and past that time, Brother Ah was still working strongly on some amazing musical ideas of his own – work that includes the three albums presented in this package, which together really mark a shift for both Ah and some of his spiritual jazz contemporaries as the 70s moved on! The set begins with the beautiful set The Sea – recorded in 1978, with a long-flowing sound that's quite hypnotic, and very much in the spiritual territory of post-Coltrane material – including work by Trane's wife Alice. Brother Ah plays flute, in these fantastic lines that spin out slowly and echo strongly – amidst a mix of percussion, violin, mbira, bass, and drums – often used in ways that build beautifully, and which provide a great introduction to both the sung and spoken passages – presented by Abena Walker, Jeanean Gibbs, and Nataska Hassan Youssef. Titles include "Nuba", "Far Away", "The Village Drum", "Visoins", and "Africa We Are Your Children". Meditation is from a few years later, and has a different makeup – a sound that's much more spare overall, and which just features Brother Ah on flute, zither, and "nature sounds" – with help from Cleo Jomo Faulks on mbira and gong! The tunes have an earthier feel than you might guess from the album's title – still somewhat meditative, but also more open to the vibes of nature than the space of the studio – with moments that feel more more like the organic sounds of the young Moondog, or maybe some of Alice Coltrane's more home-made moments. Titles include "Stillness", "Spirit World", "Close Your Eyes & See", and "Song Of The Unseen". Last up is Searching – a record from 1985 that maybe moves the spiritual agenda from the political to the personal – that shift towards more interior solutions that some musicians took in the 80s, especially as funding for some kinds of spiritual jazz albums fell by the wayside, and some artists had to adapt to the new age underground. Yet although that shift might be in place here, Brother Ah is still as righteous as ever – just equipped with a slightly different voice – as he works alongside some electronics and percussion from Richard Ashman, and blows trumpet and a variety of flutes, while also handling percussion and harmonica in very spacious ways. The record is more about extended sound textures than individual instrumentation – and titles include "I Am", "Going Within", "Inner Voice", and "Know Thyself". First time release for all three records – presented in a really great package! LP, Vinyl record album

Polydor, 1968. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 34.99
An amazing James Brown live set from the crucial year of 1968 – the show that marked the debut of "Say It Loud I'm Black & I'm Proud" – a cut that would become an anthem for much of America in the years to come! The feel here is somewhat similar to Brown's famous Boston show of the same year – a mix of blistering uptempo funk tracks, played by the band at a clip that's even faster than their studio sides, mixed with a few more stripped-down, personal cuts that feature James getting a bit more intimate with the audience. The production quality of the set is wonderful – and it leaves in all the hip spoken bits between tracks, really preserving the liveness of the concert, and packaging the whole thing with some great notes and photos too! Titles include "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry", "Say It Loud", "If I Ruled The World", "There Was A Time", "Maybe The Last Time", "I Got The Feeling", "Cold Sweat", "Please Please Please", "Tighten Up", "Licking Stick", and lots more! A pair of sweet funky fusion gems from Mark Colby – back to back on a single CD! Serpentine Fire is an overlooked gem from Bob James' Tappan Zee empire of the 70s – that label that provided the perfect platform for artists to grow a bit more after the CTI years! Reedman Mark Colby is a newcomer to this scene, but hits a groove that's instantly in the best CTI/Kudu mode – with funky jazz backings that often have that laidback, spacious style that's more soulful than jamming fusion – served up by players who include Bob James on Fender Rhodes and piano, Eric Gale and Steve Khan on guitars, Steve Gadd on drums, and Hiram Bullock on some electric guitar. Colby himself plays tenor and soprano sax – and titles include a nice remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "Serpentine Fire" – plus "King Tut", "Renegade", "On & On", and "Daydreamer". Like both of those giants, Colby gets great backing here in a spacious electric style that allows plenty of room for the solos in the lead – with artists who include Bob James and Barry Miles on Fender Rhodes, Eric Gale and Steve Khan on guitars, and Mike Mainieri on vibes. Titles include "Capativa", "Village Zoo", "Peace Of Mind", "Skat Talk", and "Macbeth". CD

Chick CoreaAlive ... CD
GRP, 1991. Used ... $4.99
A double-length live set from Chick Corea's Akoustic Band – an ensemble with kind of a silly name, but one that marked a nice return to basics for Chick! The trio features John Patitucci on bass and Dave Weckl on drums – and both players have a good sense of feeling to match Corea's expressive work here on the acoustic piano. And although live, there's a sense of intimacy to the record that's very nice – not the "superstar" sort of live record you might expect from Chick, but a nicely subdued session overall. Titles include "On Green Dolphin Street", "Humpty Dumpty", "UMMG", "Round Midnight", "Hackensack", "Morning Sprite", and "La Fiesta". CD

CultureTwo Sevens Clash – 30th Anniversary Edition ... CD
Shanachie, 1977. Used ... $9.99
Essential! The mighty debut album from African disciples Culture pairing up with the Mighty Two, Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson is one of the landmark sets of roots reggae, a defining moment of the genre dropped during the year when two sevens clashed. And though the apocalypse didn't rain down from the skies in '77, this album was certainly a world-changing event, one of the finest moments in Kingston's rich musical history! Gibbs provides the trio with a set of uplifting rhythms over which to harmonize, and Culture comes correct on every track, combining a tightly harmonized approach with a rawer, rootsier sound. This 30th anniversary edition combines the 10 tracks of the original LP with 5 bonus numbers, and includes "I'm Alone In The Wilderness", "Pirate Days", "Two Sevens Clash", "Caling Rastafari", "I'm Not Ashamed", 'Get Ready To Ride The Lion To Zion", "Black Starliner Must Come", "Jah Pretty Face", 'See Them A Come", "Natty Dread Taking Over", "See Dem A Come (12" mix w/Prince Weedy)", "See Dem Dub", "Natty Dread Taking OVer (12" mix w/I Roy), "I'm Not Ashamed (12" mix w/I Roy)" and "Not Ashamed Dub". Finally a strong full-length from Nu-Mark – the myriad strengths of which were amply hinted up via the epic 10" series that led up to it – and an album that packs plenty of diverse, timeless beatcraft and stellar guests on the mic! Nu-Mark's got a sharp, crisp edge with his beats – one that really seems to set a new sort of fire without ever being too overly-aware of its own style – often with these soulful undercurrents that help his music reach way past the usual, too! Vocals and rhymes are by a great batch of A-list talents – including Aloe Blacc, Charles Bradley, Bumpy Knuckles, Ernie Hines, Large Professor, J-Live, and Tiron – and one cut even features some sweet funky touches from Quantic. This deluxe CD edition features the album Disc 1. Disc 2 is a CD-ROM – featuring the instrumentals and acapella versions of most tracks, plus some bonus beats – with 32t tracks in all! tour and in-studio photos, the cover images from the Broken Sunlight 10-inch series and more! Atlantic/East West, 1992. Used ... $2.99
Funky Divas is right – as this classic album by En Vogue is one that had the group really redefining the sound of girl group soul for a whole new generation! The girls do a wonderful job of blending together hip hop beats and warmer mainstream soul – at a level that marked one of the key bridges between R&B and hip hop in the 90s – almost making the group kind of a trans-generational healing force in African American music. After all these years the beats are still pretty great, and the vocals even better – and titles include "My Lovin (You're Never Gonna Get It)", "Free Your Mind", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Give It UpTurn It Loose", "Hooked On Your Love", "Love Don't Love You", "This Is Your Life", "Desire", "Hip Hop Lover", and "It Ain't Over Till The Fat Lady Sings". A bright little tune from Markus Enochson & The Subliminal Kid – quick beats and light keyboards, pulsating together nicely – but with a lighter feel than you might guess from the strength of the groove! This one's slightly in a soulful house vein, but it's more instrumental and somewhat more electronic – and is followed by the more abstract "Chord Song" on the flipside – a tune that almost has a Sonar Kollektiv feel overall! 12-inch, Vinyl record

Fall1982 (Hex Enduction Hour/Room To Live/In A Hole/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Kamera/Cherry Red (UK), 1982. New Copy 6CD ... $49.99
An amazing package – three great albums by The Fall, plus lots of bonus tracks too! First up is Hex Enduction Hour – one of our key go-to albums by The Fall – a set in which all their early promise really came into focus – with even more wit and power than before! The jagged lyricism of Mark E Smith is razor-sharp – as is the instrumentation, which is heavy on that trademark noisy guitar from Craig Scanlon, weird keyboards from Marc Riley, and the driving power of the double drummers in the group! The music is every bit as textually explosive as the words on the cover – and titles include "Who Makes The Nazis", "And This Day", "Jawbone & The Air Rifle", "The Classical", "Mere Psued Mag Ed", "Fortress/Deer Park", and the classic "Hip Priest". Is Room To Live the greatest album ever by the Fall? We're always tempted to say so – because there's something here so perfect, so focused, it's hard to think of a better album to illustrate the genius of Mark E Smith! The rhythms are weirder, the lyrics more poetic, and the guitars a bit more razor sharp than before – yet the record's also not going as easily for the catchy hooks and clever turns of phrase that would take a bit of steam out of the whole Fall sound in years to come. Darkness, but delivered with a smirk – and a record that still brings us limitless joy today! Titles include "Joker Hysterical Face", "Hard Life In The Country", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Room To Live", "Papal Visit", and "Solicitor In Studio". In A Hole is a fantastic double-length live album by The Fall – recorded at a time when the group was at the height of their creative powers! Tracks are pulled from their important early albums and singles, and delivered with a searing intensity that shows just how much the group could hang on to their jagged edge and razor-sharp wit in front of a live audience – especially one on the other side of the globe! Titles include "The Container Drivers", "Fantastic Life", "English Scheme", "Impression Of J Temperance", "Room To Live", "Hip Priest", "Marquis Cha Cha", "Backdrop", "Hard Life In The Country", "Who Makes The Nazis", "Gramme Friday", "Slags Slates Etc", and "Look Know". Box set features a bonus CD with Sessions, Singles, and Soundchecks – including material from live sets in Leeds, Manchester, and London, plus John Peel material from 1981. And another bonus CD with a full live set recorded in Melbourne, in 1982 – 14 tracks in all! CD

OTOroku (UK), 2019. New Copy 2 CDs ... $18.99
The great Charles Gayle at his best – really opening up with a freewheeling vibe in this long, live improvised performance from London's Cafe OTO! The double-length set presents both performances from the evening – both non-stop improvisations, with John Edwards on bass and Mark Sanders on drums – and Gayle never failing to amaze us with that deeply raspy tone he can get from the tenor, alongside more work on piano and alto sax! Charles has this soulfulness that links right back to his earliest sounds on record – this spiritual cry that's completely mesmerizing, and which often has a lot more personal quality than some of his contemporaries – especially over the years, when Gayle still seems to be putting his all into a performance like this! Roulette/Get On Down, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99 20.98
A legendary Latin funk album – spearheaded by Eddie Palmieri! The record is a landmark crossover album from the early 70s – cut at the end of the Latin soul era, but featuring that genre's wonderful mix of Puerto Rican soul, Spanish Harlem Latin, and New York funk – which are then given a new sort of push in this era of strong Latin pride and new opportunities for the youthful scene in New York! The grooves are all nice and long – with plenty of hard jamming, Latin rhythms, funky solos, and even soulful lyrics in English – sung with a very righteous, positive message that's kept the album at the top of the stacks for years. Eddie Palmeri plays piano and directs the group – and titles include "Seeds Of Life", "Harlem River Drive", and "Idle Hands". LP, Vinyl record album

Pride/Mr Bongo (UK), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $23.99 24.98
A landmark album that is perhaps the single most influential beat source in hip hop! The record was the brainchild of bongo player Michael Viner – who also happened to be running the Pride subsidiary of MGM at the time. Viner's got a meeeeeean touch on the bongo, hitting it hard and funky like the best 70s conga players – and his approach to the instrument is kind of like a funky update of popular instrumental styles laid down on guitar by The Ventures or on moog by Hot Butter. This album features the classics "Apache" and "Bongo Rock" – both with monster funky breakdowns that showed up on a heck of a lot of hip hop records over the years – plus loads of other goodies like "Last Bongo In Belgium" and "Bongolia". Excellent stuff – and darn hard to find! (We can still remember how stunned we were when we found our first copy in a Canadian record store back in 1987 – and even then we had to pay plenty!) Stunt (Denmark), 1969. New Copy ... $15.99 18.98
Never-heard work from tenorist Bent Jaedig – easily one of the most important figures on the Danish jazz scene in the 60s! Bent's working here in a loose, open style that's quite different from some of his more tightly arranged albums of the decade – a mode that's still got lots of sharp edges and modern moments in Jaedig's solos, but which also gets some more conventional drive from the Cafe Montmartre rhythm section of Kenny Drew on piano, Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen on bass, and JC Moses on drums! Tracks are long, and handled in a format that's similar to Montmartre recordings by Dexter Gordon or Johnny Griffin from the same time – but Bent's overall style is much edgier, and he really makes a lot with the extended solo space. Titles include Long versions of "What's New", "Love For Sale", "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise", "On Green Dolphin Street", and "Bent's Minor Blues". CD

George JonesGeorge Jones & The Jones Boys – Live In Texas 1965 ... CD
Ace (UK), 1965. New Copy ... $12.99 18.98
Fantastic work from the young George Jones – working here at the height of his powers, and in a raw live setting that's a nice change from some of the polish of his studio recordings of the 60s! George's voice is great – already hitting that wider range that marked his Musicor material as a huge step forward from his years on the Mercury and Starday labels – but the live setting also returns some of the grit of those early days, and has Jones working with the very romping Jones Boys combo – who can not only cook on stage, but also bring in some of the searing guitar that made George's initial singles appeal to the young rock market too. The group get a few instrumental moments in the spotlight, too – which makes for a nice addition to the set – and although the material had been issued before, this set goes back to the original tapes, remasters the whole set, and also features a total of 26 titles that include "Who Shot Sam", "White Lightnin", "Jole Blon", "The Race Is On/Hold It", "Big Harlan Taylor", "The Window Up Above", "She Thinks I Still Care", "We Must Have Been Out Of Our Minds", "Aching Breaking Heart", "Sing A Sad Song", "Act Naturally", and "I'm Ragged But I'm Right". The story of Mark Murphy – one of our favorite jazz singers of all time – written by Peter Jones, also a jazz singer himself! Jones is London-based, and as such, does a really great job of capturing the ongoing enthusiasm and excitement about Murphy's career that was always a big part of his overseas audience – one who not only supported him strongly when the US market had begun to wane, but also gave Mark the kind of energy to keep on staying creative, even to the final years of his long career! The book's full of history about Murphy we never knew before –including many personal details, and great appreciation of his music from both a live and recorded perspective. There's also a great discography at the end, which includes some of Murphy's important collaborations and appearances on other folks' records – and the hardcover book is 247 pages, with some black and white images. Bassist Mark Dresser may well be our favorite part of the triangle here – as he's got this sonorous power that's completely compelling – often echoing the work of Larry Ochs on tenor and soprano saxes, but also very much standing apart – while Vladimir Tarasov moves between punctuated passages and more textural aspects of his work on drums and percussion. Joyce, Sivuca, Tutty Moreno, Celia Vaz, & OthersBrasil ... LP
Soul Jazz (UK), 1994. Near Mint- ... $18.99
A really groundbreaking album of Brazilian sounds – a set recorded in the mid 90s by a London label – but one with a vibe that stretches back to the most important classics of the Brazilian scene in the 60s and 70s! In a way, the whole record's a bit out of time – nothing at all like Brazilian music being made in the 90s, and really the beginning of a moment of British-based preservation of lost genius that would flower in countless reissues and new recordings from labels like Mr Bongo and Far Out! Yet this set preceded most of those – and marks a first effort along those lines – done with help from Joe Davis of Far Out, and a key combination of Brazilian talents from previous decades – including singers Celia Vaz and Wanda Sa, drummer Tutty Moreno, saxophonist Teco Cardoso, trombonist Raul De Souza, percussionist Pirulito, and the most legendary talents of Joyce and Sivuca! The tunes have this beautiful mixture of natural, organic energy and modern jazz inflections – very much like the kind of sounds that Hermeto Pascoal and Airto unlocked with Quarteto Novo, but also with the energy of Joyce's classic material too – recorded beautifully, with an instantly timeless vibe. Titles include "Batucada No 1", "Capoeira", "Magica", "Berimbau", "Amazon River", "Misturada", "Forro", and "Zanzibar". LP, Vinyl record album

The title track's a mighty big hit for The Marketts – and it's also a great way to describe the group's talent for pushing past their boundaries at the time! The sound is surf instrumental at the core – but really stretches out to space themes, soundtrack areas, and more – thanks to inventive arrangements from Ray Pohlman, who pushes these guys farther than the usual groups of the time – while still keeping that guitar instrumental style that made them so great overall! There's a lot more variety to the tunes than you'd hear on a Ventures album, for example – and beautiful Bones Howe engineering makes sure that the sound is top-shelf throughout! Never-issued work from underground Atlanta soul genius Richard Marks – an artist who never got much exposure back in the day, but who kept on producing and recording funky soul nuggets on his own! Marks' later years were covered in a previous set by the Now Again label – and this time around, they dig even deeper into his past – with a whole host of tracks that could have been the stuff of rare funky 45 dreams – had they ever gotten released as 7" singles! Marks clearly has a strong influence from James Brown and his band – and the main instrumentation on most of the combo cuts is guitar, which is used to really whomp down on the rhythms, and enforce the groove in the way that James might have done! There's also some cuts that show Richard hitting some more mellow 70s styles too – almost echoes of Bill Withers, especially when he uses acoustic guitar instead of electric – and there's a few occasional deep soul moments too. Titles include "Never Satisfied", "Crackerjack", "Challenge To A Pretty Woman", "Your Friends", "Trying To Survive", "I'm The Man For You", "It's Been Kinda Hard", "Love Is Gone", "Speak Now", "Simple Carefree Life", and "China Doll (extended)". 2CD set features 36 tracks in all – lots of bonus material! Pat's opening up his guitar lines here, and playing in a freer, post-Coltrane way than on his earlier albums. He's backed up here by Eddie Green on electric piano, plus Tyrone Brown on bass and Sherman Ferguson on drums. Tracks include "Impressions", "Consciousness", and "On The Stars". Pat Martino in one of his greatest settings – live, in front of the kind of an audience where he could really open up! The set's a great marker of the growth that Pat experienced as the 70s approached – taking all the lessons he'd learned from his years gigging it up in the soul jazz underground, and using them to forge a more expansive, more cosmic approach to jazz. The tracks on the set are all quite long – with backing by a trio that features electric piano from Ron Thomas, and an overall sound that's exploratory, but never too out or trippy. Great early work by Mark Murphy – a set that's different than the cool breeziness of his 70s work, and done with an approach that's a lot hipper than most of his 60s contemporaries! Ernie Wilkins handles the arrangements, and there's a rollicking soul jazz groove here that's a bit unusual for Murphy – but which makes for a nice change from his earlier work for Decca or Capitol. As with most of Mark's records, the tunes are very well-chosen, and go way past the obvious – a set list that includes Fran Landesman's great "Stoppin The Clock", Jon Hendricks' lyrics to Horace Silver's "Doodlin", Annie Ross' famous vocalese version of "Twisted", and hip takes on jazz standards "Green Dolphin Street", "Milestones", and "Out Of This World". Vocals are often in an ensemble mode, and work really well with the dubby undercurrents in the rhythms – creating a head-nodding groove that's somewhere in the territory of Cymande, but which really takes off in a new direction once the guitar steps up to the plate – that perfect fusion of psych, rock, and funk that marks some of the best Zamrock work of the time. The group's got a nicely warm vibe – Massimo Farao on piano, Aldo Zunino on bass, and Byron Landham on drums – and although Farao gets in some nice solos, Nelson's clearly the main attraction – as he makes these tunes explode with chromatic hues, but in an easygoing way! The whole thing's another example of why Steve's been one of our favorite vibes players for years – and titles include "Easy Living", "East Of The Sun", "Samba De Orfeu", "Beautiful Friendship", and "Lady Be Good" – plus Steve's original "Blues Up". Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Wild work from one of the more compelling artists of the Cali soul scene – an Oakland singer/keyboardist who issued a rare album under the name of TJ Hustler in 1979, then kept on making his own sounds away from the mainstream! The vibe here is very very 80s underground – lots of Casio-styled keyboards, used with spare drum programs – and topped with lyrics that are quite far from any mainstream understanding of soul – clearly marking Preacherman as his own sort of singer right from the start. The collection is a perfect fit for the Luaka Bop style of finding truly unique artists and giving them the spotlight they deserve – and titles include "Feel It", "Out Of This World", "Tell Me Why", "That's Good", "Age Of Individualism", and the 18 minute long "Up & Down". ResidentsMole Box – The Complete Mole Trilogy Preserved (Mark Of The Mole/Tunes Of Two Cities/Big Bubble/Mole Show/bonus tracks) (6CD set) ... CD
Ralph (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... $34.99
The complete Mole Trilogy from The Residents – a complicated longform work that dominated most of their recordings in the mid 80s, and which created a fair bit of bonus material and sidebar songs – all of which are compiled in this massive 6CD set! The Mole storyline is a very loose narrative used to give a bit more structure than usual to the group's offbeat mix of electronics, processed vocals, and all the strange instrumentation that made them a key bridge between academic experiments of the postwar years, and more progressive work to come in the postpunk scenes around the globe. The group always hid their identity, and were perhaps even more hidden than usual behind this long storyline – while still spinning out the kinds of sounds that always held their audiences rapt, and kept their listeners guessing. CD features the full albums Mark Of The Mole, Tunes Of Two Cities, The Big Bubble, and The Mole Show – plus bonus tracks for each album, a full bonus CD of another Mole show in Washington in 1983, and a bonus CD of Miscellaneous Mole Material – all with a big booklet of notes. Liveright, 2017. New Copy ... $5.99 29.95
Hank Williams only managed to spend 29 short years on our planet – but he packed a hell of a lot of life and creative activity into a space just short of three decades – all covered in great detail here by author Mark Ribowsky! The book's nice and hefty – and not only spends a fair bit of time on Hank's early years, with great insight to the forces that helped him create his special sound – but also does a great job of portraying the wider world of country music in the postwar years – a time of opportunity and struggle, both of which probably led Williams to an early grave. Book is 472 pages, hardcover, with some black and white images. Book

A corker of a set from tenorist Diego Rivera – a player who's been around for a bit, but who really seems to find his groove in this Posi-Tone setting! The album's got Diego working with some great labelmates – including trombonist Michael Dease on all cuts, a name that's worth us checking out the album alone – plus work on various tracks by Joe Magnarelli on trumpet, Markus Howell on alto, and Behn Gillece on vibes! The core quintet also includes Luther Allison on piano, Andea Owens on bass, and Jason Tiemann on drums – all playing nice and tight, so Rivera and Dease can really soar on their solos – taking off on tunes that include the Rivera originals "Connections", "Ties That Bind", "Nueva York", "O Moderno", and "Mother's Nature" – plus Dease's "Seiko Time", and a nice bold-voiced version of "Naima" – done very differently than usual! The group includes Jeanne Lee on vocals, plus Lester Bowie, Malachi Favors, Dave Burrell, and Philly Joe Jones – and the whole thing has that great Paris spiritual free jazz party feel to it! Live At The Pan-African Festival was recorded in Algiers during the Pan-African Festival in 1969. The recording is a very unique one, and features Shepp's group with Grachan Moncur, Clifford Thorton, and Dave Burrell – plus lots of Algerian musicians! Mark SonksenClimbing Mountains ... CD
Blauklang, 2009. Used ... $1.99
Mostly original music from bassist Mark Sonksen – a host of really wonderful little numbers, handled with great depth and sensitivity by a trio that also includes Leandro Lopez Varady on piano and Andre Beasley on drums! There's a sound here that's as subtle as the image on the cover – but one that really grabs us in the end – freshly visionary piano trio numbers, penned with a range of feeling that you might only get in larger ensemble numbers – yet delivered with an intimate feeling that's much more striking in the end. Varady's piano is quite good – often understated, but powerful in that respect – and a few numbers feature electric keys instead of acoustic. Titles include "Sanctuary", "Dark Journey", "Grassland", "Kingdom Come", "Climbing Mountains", and "The Last Goodbye". CD

A mighty mighty album that recalls the glory days of the FMP scene – a triple-talent terror that features the massive reed work of Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, and Peter Brotzmann! Given that Gustafsson and Vandermark are the two key heirs to the sound that Brotzmann first forged back in the 60s and 70s, the pairing is a perfect one – and somehow, the trio manage to find even more strength, energy, and creativity working together on this set than on any of their recent pairings. Tracks are spare, improvised, and beautifully creative – and titles include "Elements Of Refusal", "Broken Hymn", "Hammer Requiem", "Blessed Assurance Uninsured", "No One Ever Works Alone", and "Death Can Only Kill Me Once". A great tenorist, heard here in a wonderfully rich setting – a set of long, open tracks that really let Grant Stewart solo strongly – all with the special sort of energy that seems to take place in these Smalls Live recordings! Most numbers push up towards the 10 minute mark, leaving lots of room for Grant's deep, soulful lines on tenor – served up with perfectly matched rhythmic support from the trio of Tardo Hammer on piano, David Wong on bass, and Phil Stewart on drums. As on other label releases, the presentation is wonderful – very basic, in ways that really let the magic of the performance come through brilliantly – a quality that's made Smalls Live one of our favorite jazz labels of the 21st Century. Wonderfully noisy, messy grooves from the mighty Mark Stewart – working here in the best spirit of the On-U sound years – when just about anything was allowable in the studio! Stewart's equally influenced by punk and dub, but also has a sound that's completely his own – very dark and moody, and filled with political energy from the Reagan/Thatcher era – with instrumentation from a host of other On-U label mates – including musicians from New Age Steppers, African Head Charge, and The Dub Syndicate – brooding under the kind of trippy percussion that only Adrian Sherwood could deliver at the time. A huge bridge between London of the punk years, and England of the Massive Attack/Tricky generation – with titles that include "Liberty City", "The Paranoia Of Power", "High Ideals & Crazy Dreams", "None Dare Call It Conspiracy", "Learning To Cope With Cowardice", "Blessed Are Those Who Struggle", and "Don't Ever Lay Down Your Arms". Snow's is maybe best known to most for his important experimental film work of the 60s and 70s – but as the cover will attest, he's also a multi-faceted artist, and also has a long legacy of creative improvisation – one that's still very much alive and well here as he works alongside saxophone genius Ken Vandermark! The album features three improvisations, all recorded live – very much in an older spirit of free jazz, but with all the amazing saxophone explorations that Vandermark has opened up over the years. Ken Vandermark and Paal Nilssen-Love are no musical strangers – having played together for most of the past three decades – so it's no surprise that they leap right out of the gate with boundless improvisational energy here – completely on fire in a live performance recorded together in Switzerland! As always, Vandermark really blows us away with the range of sounds that he gets from his reeds – elements that effortlessly shift between musical moments and more textural passages – as Paal himself moves between romping rhythm and more abstract percussion elements. There's no songs listed at all on the CD – although there appear to be five selections – but given the instant appeal of this duo from a free jazz perspective, you hardly need notes to tell you what to love! Audiographic, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 20.00
A wonderful Italian/American collaboration – one that brings the reeds of Ken Vandermark and drums of Hamid Drake into contact with the live electronics of Luigi Ceccarelli and flutes of Gianni Trovalusci! The pairing of players is perfect, as Ceccarelli's electronics often have these percussive pulses – not drum machine styles, but those blocks of sonic energy that remind us of the best earlier use of improvised electronics, sometimes by artists who were also drummers – which makes the balance with Drake's percussion a really great match. And Vandermark is always opening up new territory on saxes, so working here with the amazing sounds of Trovalusci's flute makes for some really fantastic energy – on a single long improvisation, recorded at the Forli Open Music Festival. Okka Disk, 2007. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Some of the most beautiful, introspective work we've heard in years from Ken Vandermark – spare duets with pianist Pandelis Karayorgis – done in a mode that almost recalls the best experiments of Lee Konitz or Jimmy Giuffre from many years back! The sound is spare, but never too sleepy or lacking for inspiration – as Vandermark really opens up in this setting, matching the angular piano work of Karayorgis with some beautifully thoughtful lines on a variety of saxophones and clarinet. Some tunes have a slow-building approach that hangs the sound in the air almost magically – while others come on with a full attack, then slow things down for a bit of contemplation. As always with Vandermark, the influences of the music are given full credit throughout – and titles include "JCT", "United Forces Of One", "Lifgatowy", "Betwixt", "Title Without Year", and "Absolute Camel". Two fantastic side-long improvisations – but we hardly would have expected anything less, given that the proceedings feature Nate Wooley on trumpet, and Ken Vandermark on tenor and soprano clarinet! The latter sounds really wonderful in Ken's hands – full of these unusual sharp sounds that are matched beautifully by Nate's always-creative work on trumpet – as the pair move together effortlessly through sonic space, and create with a spontaneous intensity that must have been something to watch in person! Oddly, the music was captured in the studio, though – not on stage – but has the energy of some of the best live improvised performances that either musician has given us – on long tracks "Deeply Discounted II" and "Sequences Of Snow (For Michael Snow)". ✨✧ BadbadnotgoodIV ... LP
Innovative Leisure, 2016. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Guerssen (Spain), 1975. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $19.99
Argentine rock, recorded in Paris during the early 70s – a really unusual expatriate album that comes off with a sound that's pretty unique! Miguel Abuelo clearly draws inspiration from the heavier rock that was showing up in South America at the time – yet the overall execution of the record also shares some of the warmer, more optimistic qualities that marked some of the French groups during the period – occasional folksy elements, and a post-68 positivity that holds on even when things get somewhat trippy and jammy. Instrumentation is heavy on guitars – both acoustic and electric – and the longer tracks really take off with some wild sounds, especially when bits of moog or electronics are dropped into the mix. Pressure Drop (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 5CD set ... $32.99
An insanely huge amount of work from British rocksteady legend Laurel Aitken – especially when you consider that this set of 138 tracks was issued in the short space of just two years! In truth, Laurel's not the lead artist on all the cuts, but he had something to do with all of them – either as a singer, songwriter, producer, or other creative force – all bringing to a variety of UK labels the experience he'd build up as a formative member on the growing scene in Kingston! The work throughout is marked with the wit that always made Aitken such a standout, and which also links his contributions to Jamaican music with larger Caribbean culture – but never in the watered-down style of his later revival work. The scope of music is amazing, and in addition to dozens of tracks recorded under his own name, the package features cuts by The Gruvy Beats, The Classics, Inner Mind, Winston Groovy, Sonny Binns & The Rudies, Tiger, King Horror, Pama Dice, The Cimarons, Trevor Lloyd, Dice & Cummie, Dice The Boss, and others. It's hard to get at the brilliance of the 70s albums from Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin in words – but we'll try just a bit! The records are almost an anomaly – creative big band records at a time when most folks were leaving the format behind – put together by a duo who weren't really stars in the years before, at least on the American market – but who really found a way to shine in this new setting! Toshiko composed and arranged all the material – opening up a whole new depth in her songwriting – and she also delivers superb piano solos that have the dexterity of her earlier work, but also a new level of complexity too. Tabackin is wonderful as well – fantastic on flute and tenor – and also providing strong inspiration to reed soloists Dick Spencer and Gary Foster too. Emil Richards does a nice percussion solo on one track – and titles include "Notorious Tourist From East", "Deracinated Flower", "Yellow Is Mellow", and "Mobile". CD

Laurindo Almeida & Bud ShankBrazilliance ... LP
World Pacific, Early 50s. Sealed Gatefold ... $14.99
A landmark set of recordings cut for the Pacific Jazz label in the early 50s, and supposedly a major influence on the early bossa artists in Brazil! The tracks were cut by a quartet led by LA altoist Bud Shank, and featuring Brazilian guitarist Laurindo Almeida, who was living in LA at the time. The mix of alto and guitar, in a jazzy vein, but with Latiny rhythms, is very similar to the early bossa jazz recordings – and even more so to the later American ones by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd. Supposedly, original 10" LPs of the material made their way to Brazil, and later influenced Jobim and Gilberto. Although we can't confirm that rumor entirely, you'll sure hear a similarity, and even if you don't, the stuff's still pretty darn great. Cadet, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
One of the grooviest records ever – a sublime blend of African percussion, soulful orchestrations, and Dorothy Ashby's amazing electric harp! By the time of this landmark album, Dorothy had been knocking around the jazz world for a number of years, but it wasn't until she hooked up with Richard Evans at Cadet Records that her sound really began to cook – breaking down genres and expectations in the trademark style of the best late 60s sides from the Chicago underground. The record's got a bit of funk, a bit of jazz, and a heck of a lot of soul – and the setting works perfectly for Dorothy's harp, giving it a lot more room to work around than some of her smaller jazz combo albums. The album includes two great originals – "Soul Vibrations" and "Afro-Harping" – both of which have a nice funky edge, and a groovy soulful bounce – and other tunes include "Lonely Girl", "Life Has Its Trials", "Look Of Love", "Come Live With Me", and a great version of Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower". ESP, 1964. New Copy ... $12.99
A landmark recording – Albert Ayler's first album for the ESP label, and a record that hit the jazz world like a bullet! Spiritual Unity sets the stage for a format that would become huge in the European avant scene of the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even today – the sax-driven power-trio, tenor against bass and drums, working freely with less rhythmic constraints than before, searching for new sounds and new modes of expression, working through changes in a style first proposed by Sonny Rollins, but taken to new intensity by the New York underground of the 60s. That sound is summed up here perfectly by Ayler, Gary Peacock, and Sunny Murray – working together with an edgey brilliance, on classic tracks that include "Ghosts: First Variation", "Ghosts: Second Variation", "The Wizard", and "Spirits". 50th Anniversary Edition – also includes the bonus track "Vibrations". Kenny Barron & Buster WilliamsTwo As One ... LP
Red (Italy), 1986. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A wonderful little date from pianist Kenny Barron – one that has him working in drumless duo mode, with only the bass of Buster Williams for accompaniment! The tunes are often quite long, and it's beautiful to hear the way Kenny stretches out on the keys – buoyed up warmly by Williams' trademark tone – basslines that are soft on bite, and round on sound – drenched with soul throughout, and creating a subtle pulse that the presence of a drum would only ruin! Barron has a wonderful way of being pensive at points, while still moving things forward strongly – and titles include "All Of You", "This Time The Dream's On Me", "I Love You", and "My Funny Valentine". Basso Valdambrini SextetSestetto Basso Valdambrini – The Best Modern Jazz In Italy 1962 ... LP
RCA/Naked Lunch (Italy), 1962. New Copy (reissue)... $18.99
A really landmark album in European jazz – one of those records that always tops the lists of collectors, and for good reason too! The sextet of trumpeter Oscar Valdambrini and tenorist Gianni Basso was easily one of the greatest things going in jazz on that side of the Atlantic in the early 60s – a fresh, modern group who could still play with plenty of soul – avoiding some of the cool jazz traps of other European combos, and really hitting hard with solo work that matched the best American work of the time. The sound here is really incredible – tunes that bristle with electricity from the very first note, played with a cohesiveness that makes the record far more than just a happy accident in the studio! Titles include the originals "Coltrane Style" and "Monotonia", plus versions of Jackie McLean's "Dr Jackle", Junior Mance's "Jubilation", and Benny Golson's "Are You Real". LP, Vinyl record album

Joe BataanSalsoul (with bonus track) ... CD
Salsoul/Octave (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $22.99
A landmark album from Joe Bataan – so great, that it made the entire record company change its name! The record has Joe really bursting out after his seminal Latin Soul work of the late 60s – blending Latin rhythms and American soul into a whole new style of music – one that Joe called "Salsoul", because of it's mixture of salsa and soul! The blend is fantastic, a real milestone in the NuYorican scene – and handled perfectly by Joe on every cut! There's some massive Latin funk on here, including the tracks "Latin Strut" and "Aftershower Funk", plus some straighter Latin jazz, like "Sunny Gets Blue Mambo", and a great Latin Soul cut with English vocals called "Johnny". CD features the bonus track "Continental Square Dance". CD

Grand Royal, 1994. New Copy (reissue)... $31.99 35.99
What can we say? The Beasties rise to an even higher level with their manic trio hip hop style mixed with the live jazz/funk/garage rock sounds and keyboards by Money Mark – featuring a bunch of their classic hits and underappreciated album cuts alike. They could really do no wrong at this point in their unlikely long career. One of our favorites then and now is "Get It Together" featuring a very sharp Q-Tip almost stealing the show, and other standouts include unstoppable "Sure Shot" and "Sabotage", "Futterman's Rule", "Shambala", "The Scoop", "Do It", "Heart Attack Man", "Bodhisattva Wow", the Jimmy Smith shoutout "Root Down" and more. Jorge BenTropical ... CD
Island/Oficial Arquivos, 1976. Used ... $6.99
One of the few albums that Jorge Ben recorded for the US market – and a tight set of tunes that grooves with a heavy samba soul sound! The album features new versions of some of Jorge's older tunes, done here with a small combo that mixes electric piano, organ, guitar, and lots of percussion into the grooves – a fresh, lively and exciting approach for the mid 70s period, but timelessly so – it's as incredible now as ever! The whole album's tight, lively, and soulful – and tracks include a madly percussive take on "Taj Mahal", plus "Pais Tropical", "Chegandos Os Alquimistas", "Chove Chuva", "My Lady", "Mas Que Nada", and "Jesus De Praga". ✨✧ Big Star#1 Record (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Ardent/Craft, 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
The amazing first album from Big Star – a set that came out of nowhere, made hardly a ripple on the charts, yet went onto crash in big waves of sound for generations to come! The style here is unlike thing else before – hardly what you'd expect from the group's Memphis roots or Alex Chilton's previous performances – yet the group's music has become a generation-defining sound in the way it blends southern inflections with harder rock influences, and a lean, gritty quality that's arguably in a late 70s space between punk and power pop. Every element is wonderful – guitars that are powerful, but never indulgent – vocals that are moving, but never overly emotive – and a balance between sensitive and searing moments that even The Replacements could never hope to match. A landmark all the way through – with tracks that include "Feel", "Ballad Of El Goodo", "In The Street", "The India Song", "When My Baby's Beside Me", "Give Me Another Chance", "Don't Lie To Me", "Thirteen", "Watch The Sunrise", and "Try Again". Brian BladeBrian Blade Fellowship (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Blue Note (Germany), 1997. New Copy 2LP ... $26.99 34.99
An important Blue Note set from the end of the 90s – a record that marked a bit of a shift in the label's approach, and really set the scene for a more open ear to new sounds to come! Brian Blade's a drummer, but the set is definitely the work of a warm fellowship in jazz – a well-matched group of players that includes Myron Walden on alto, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano, John Cowherd on acoustic piano and Wurlitzer, and Christopher Thomas on bass – all working through mostly original material by Blade that has this slow burn and soulful sparkle – often mellow, but without every being too laidback – and produced by Daniel Lanois with a really great overall sense of sound. Titles include "The Undertow", "In Spite Of Everything", "Folklore", "If You See Lurah", "Mohave", and "Red River Revel". LP, Vinyl record album

Art BlakeyLike Someone In Love (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1960. Used ... $44.99
A landmark album that had one of the best versions of the Jazz Messengers taking a big step forward – thanks to some increased songwriting by the group's young tenor genius – Wayne Shorter! Shorter's tunes take up all of the second half of the record, and all of them have gone onto become classics – "Giantis", "Sleeping Dancer Sleep On", and "Noise In The Attic" – all tunes that hint at the modernism that was to come in Wayne's music, and which especially seem to push his tenor and the trumpet of Lee Morgan into the range of more mature colors and tones that would grace their music as the 60s moved on. Meanwhile, there's a rock-solid rhythm drive at the core – Art Blakey on drums, Jymie Merritt on bass, and the great Bobby Timmons on piano – still making a strong contribution to the group. Lee Morgan wrote the nine minute tune "Johnny's Blue" on side one – which also includes a beautiful version of "Like Someone In Love" – a masterpiece in soulful lyricism! CD features one bonus alternate track, too. CD

Booker T & The MGsMcLemore Avenue ... LP
Stax, 1969. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $33.99
The Beatles had Abbey Road – and Booker T & The MGs had McLemore Ave, the main street running outside the Stax studios, and a fitting title for the album that has them playing tunes from The Beatles' incredible Abbey Road album. If you've ever thought that Abbey Road was a soft-rock lowpoint in the Beatles' career, consider how many soul and jazz artists either covered the whole album, performed songs from it, or referenced it in their album covers. This little gem is proof that the compositions already had a life of their own within a short time of the release of the record – as Book and crew take the Beatles' tunes to whole new heights, working them together into a complicated batch of grooves that really pushes past their earlier work on Stax. Who knows, perhaps The Beatles were just the kick that Book needed – we can't ever tell the whole story, but we can say that the record marks a strong turning point for the group, and is well worth having for a variety of reasons. Titles include "The End", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Because", "I Want You/She's So Heavy", and "Polythene Pam". LP, Vinyl record album
