Mark De Clive-LoweTake The Space Trane ... CD
Tru Thoughts (UK), 2013. Used ... $8.99
A whole new sound for Mark De Clive-Lowe – and a great one too – a completely different approach than any of his other previous records, and one that mixes his core cosmic grooves with a heavy dose of jazz! The set has Mark working with the Rotterdam Jazz Orchestra – who provide bigger band backing to his sweet keyboards and rhythms, making for a wonderful blend of acoustic and electric that almost takes us back to some of the best MPS sessions of this nature in the 70s! Most tracks feature at least one horn solo out from the larger group – and there's no vocals at all on the record, which further gives the whole thing a fresh vibe compared to some of Mark's recent releases. Titles include "Relax Unwind", "Blues For Six", "Money", "El Dia Perfecto", "Heaven", "Take The Space Trane", "Caravan", and "Filthy Fingers". CD

Mark De Clive-Lowe Presents ChurchMark De Clive-Lowe Presents Church ... CD
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2014. Used ... $11.99
Mark De Clive-Lowe takes us to church – with a set that's easily his most soulful, spiritual record ever! The album's got a lot more acoustic elements than usual – plenty of jazz elements on tenor, flute, trumpet, and percussion – mixed with Mark's own great Fender Rhodes and other keyboards – some of which shift the sound of the acoustic instruments in the process! The shift is a bit like that taken by Jimi Tenor with his own music in recent years, but the overall sound is still very much in the soaring, cosmic territory we've always loved from Mark – but there's also a much deeper connection to the planet as well. Wonderful throughout – a great step forward for an artist we already love so much – and titles include "Sketch For Miguel", "Now Or Never", "Nova Roda", "The Mission", "Distractions", "Mason's Galaxy", "Imam", and "Sun Up Sun Down". Legends Of The Underground (Mark De Clive Lowe)Legends Of The Underground – Original Soundtrack ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2005. Used ... $9.99
A brilliant meeting of the minds – one that features the coming together of some of the greatest talents on the current cosmic groove scene! Legends Of The Underground is a project spearheaded by Mark De Clive-Lowe, and featuring work from Domu, Seiji, and Bembe Segue – all of whom work with Mark in a set of blistering tunes that take the London sound of the past few years to the next level! There's an intensity and focus here that remind us of 4Hero at their Two Pages best – a sense of spacey jazz mixed with modern groove – all swirling to the skies on waves of power, life, joy, and energy. Vocals often have a floating, spiritual sort of quality – and the tunes dip and bubble nicely throughout. Titles include "The Divine Room", "The Gathering (parts 1 & 2)", "The Dark Room", "Anarchite City", and "Paradise Garden". CD

Nia AndrewsNo Place Is Safe ... LP
World Galaxy/Alpha Pup, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 17.99
A record with a very striking title – and a wonderful sound to match – this warm, fluid blend of the vocals of Nia Andrews and a rich keyboard-heavy environment – one that features a fair bit of contributions from Mark De Clive-Lowe! Nia also plays piano and keyboards, and it's clear that she's an equally comfortable instrumentalist – and often envisions her vocals wrapped around her keys – yet never in a way that's trying to hide her singing, as Andrews is clearly one hell of a vocalist in the making! Titles include "Little Girl", "Linger", "Might Be Eternity", "The Road", "Cleo & The King", "Seems So", and "The Ceiling". LP, Vinyl record album

Alex Attias Presents MustangBack Home ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2004. Used ... $2.99
Sublime future jazz from Alex Attias – one of the key forces in the cosmic London scene of the 21st Century, stepping out here in a long-awaited full-length set that served up the full complement of his talents! As you'd expect from Alex, there's plenty of snapping beats and spacey keys on the set – an extrapolation of 70s funky jazz, into the spacier and headier realm that's been explored by Attias and the best of his contemporaries on recent singles. But over and above the high quality usual, there's also a farther-reaching set of rhythms and modes of expression going on here – as Alex uses the freedom of the full-length to work in modes that are sometimes subtler, sometimes more experimental – occasionally just grooving instrumentally, but also getting plenty of help from guest stars that include Vanessa Freeman, Jessica Lauren, Bembe Segue, Colonel Red, and Mark De Clive-Lowe. Tracks include "Help Me", "Closer To Me", "Future Jazz", "In The Jungle", "Back Home", "Everchanging Times", "Darker Side Of Light", "Angels", "Confusion", and "Transformation". CD

✨✧ BreakthroughBreakthrough (Japanese pressing) ... CD
Sony (Japan), 2005. Used ... $13.99
A great mix of styles from this up-and-coming Japanese crew – a group who work equally well in hip hop and cosmic soul territory, and who are getting help here from a huge array of guest stars! Breakthrough work hard to craft some beautifully jazzy and laidback beats on the set – but they never take center stage for their efforts, and instead leave that aspect of the set to a range of vocalists and performers that includes Count Bass D, Bembe Segue, Bahamadia, Masspyke, Gagle, Spacecatz, Pushim, Jneiro Jarel, Ovasoul 7, Mark De Clive-Lowe, Amp Fiddler, and Outsect! Titles include "No Game", "Finger Funk", "Womanizer", "Highway 2 U", "XL", "Green Like The Sun", "A Song", "Chalk It Up", "8 Bit Bug", "Rude One Space Rhymes", "This Way Before", and "We Got Music". RimaThis World ... CD
Compost (Germany), 2003. Used ... $2.99
A stunning debut from Rima – one of the most exciting acts in years on the always-exciting Compost Records! The group have a sound that's nicely jazzy – clearly steeped in influences from 70s fusion, but also done with the free-thinking sound of the current European underground. Keyboards bubble warmly over rhythms that stretch from skittish to straight – occasionally making way for a bit of vocals, but never letting the instrumental groove get too far out of focus. The album features guest work by Mark De Clive Lowe, Anna Stubbs, Julie Dexter, Colonel Red, Nicola Kramer, and George Levin – and titles include a great remake of the Brazilian fusion classic "Vidigal", plus "O Vento Dira", "Real Love", "So Sweet", "Telos", "Simian Society", "Subdued", "Let It Go", "Rivers", "Modern Times", and "This World". Dwight TribleMothership ... LP
Gearbox (UK), 2019. New Copy 2LP ... $16.99 27.99
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". VariousFree Soul 2010s – Urban Jazz ... CD
P-Vine (Japan), Early 2010s. New Copy ... $24.99
Jazzy grooves from the global underground – all brought together in a sweet set of tracks for the Free Soul series! Despite the "urban jazz" in the title, the sound here isn't the smooth jazz you might expect – and instead these tracks are mostly small label numbers that are hipper than usual, often with a blend of instrumentation and vocals that really shows the more forward-thinking side of the contemporary underground! Titles include "Already There" by Taylor McFerrin with Robert Glasper, "Hyperballad" by Travis Sullivan's Bjorkestra, "Thinkin Bout You" by Becca Stevens Band, "Singularis" by Eric Harland Voyager, "The Look Out" by Richard Spaven, "Lorton" by Zhenya Strigalev, "Nothing Like This" by Erimaj featuring Chris Turner, "Willow" by Elizabeth Shepherd, "7th Avenue North" by Marc Cary, "Sketch For Miguel" by Mark De Clive-Lowe, and "Upstairs By A Chinese Lamp" by Billy Childs with Esperanza Spaulding. ✨✧ Shuya OkinoUnited Legends ... CD
Geneon (Japan), 2006. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The "Legends" in the title of this one is certainly correct – as the album features input from Fertile Ground, Carleen Anderson, Bugz In The Attic, Clara Hill, Domu, and many others – a top-shelf array of 21st Century soul talents, all working here under the guidance of Shuya Okino! Shyua's half of Kyoto Jazz Massive – and the style here certainly has plenty of the best elements of recent KJM work, but also a much farther-reaching sense of soul – one that bristles and crackles with energy throughout, and which makes the album one of the most dynamic projects we've heard in years! Okino wrote and produced the album, but music is mostly played or provided by the guests – not just the backings, but the lead vocals as well! Titles include "If It Is Love" with Clara Hill & Pirahnahead, "Thank You" with Navasha Daya & Kyoto Jazz Massive, "Turn It Up" with Afronaught and Mellisa Browne, "Beautiful Sadness" with Carleen Anderson and Domu, "Pieces Of You" with Yukimi Nagano & Dego, "Summer Love" with Nicky Guiland and Seiji, "Love Is The Key" with Josh Milan and Phil Asher, "What Would I Do Without You" by Vikter Duplaix and Mark De Clive-Lowe, and "A Million Tears" with Courtney Denni and Da Lata. ✨✧ Restless Soul with Zansika & Shea SoulNippon Exclusive EP – Draw Your Bone (voc, inst, reprise)/Something Inside (voc, reprise) ... 12-inch
Especial (Japan), 2007. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Restless Soul magic from the mighty Phil Asher – getting plenty of help here on both cuts from Mark De Clive-Lowe! "Draw Your Bow" features soulful vocals from Shea Soul – slinking around the keyboards and beats nicely, with a depth that gives the track a classic soul feel overall – thanks in part to Phil's straightforward rhythms on the cut – more 70s funky than some of his other more cosmic work in years past! "Something Inside" is slightly more skittish, but still plenty warm and funky – a wicked little groove that features lead vocals from Zansika, and more great keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe! 12-inch, Vinyl record
