✨✧ Mark De Clive-LoweHeritage II ... CD
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2019. Used ... $6.99
A beautiful second volume in the Heritage series from keyboard genius Mark De Clive Lowe – and one that we like even more than the first! The music here has the strong spiritual currents of the previous set, but also brings in more of the cosmic, electronic modes that we knew in Mark's initial music – a great blend of jazz with inventive rhythms, wide-ranging keyboard sounds, and even some live electronics – recorded in concert, but with the complexity of a more dynamic studio production! Other players include Teodross Avery on tenor, Josh Johnson on alto, Carlos Nino on percussion, Brando Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – and titles include "Isan", "Ryugu Jo", "Bushido II", "Mizugaki", "Mirai No Rekishi", and "O Edo Nihonbashi". ✨✧ Mark De Clive-LoweHeritage ... CD
Mashibeats/Ropeadope, 2019. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
We've loved the music of Mark De Clive-Lowe for many years – and he's really rewarded us with a continuing evolution of his sound and style – to a point where a record like this is nothing that we might have expected over a decade ago! The set's a live jazz performance, but still graced with some of the more cosmic touches from Mark's electronic years – and the keyboardist plays both acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes – amidst a group that also includes the great Carlos Nino on percussion, Josh Johnson on alto and flute, Brandon Eugene Owens on bass, and Brandon Combs on drums – a very soulful combo who are more than willing to follow the leader on his spiritual musical journey! And the set's definitely got a spiritual vibe – tracks that spin out with inspiration from De Clive-Lowe's earlier life in Japan – but given a more contemporary, soulful style – really glowing in a way that resonates with the image on the cover. The set also features guest work from Teodross Avery on tenor on two tracks – and titles include "Bushido 1", "Memories Of Nanzenji", "Asa No Yume", "Niten Ichi", "Akatombo", and "Mizugaki". CD

✨✧ Mark De Clive-Lowe & OthersMDCL Remixes Vol 1 EP ... LP
Mashibeats, 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Masterful remixes by the mighty Mark De Clive-Lowe – with all the depth we've always loved in both his production work and his own recordings – putting his distinctive spin on tracks by Nils Wulker & Jill Scott, Nina Lares, King, Dexter Story, Amana Melome and Cherie Mathieson! Mark has a way of honing in on the deepest facets of the original tracks – whether it's spacey soul, cosmic club grooves, underground soul jazz or bass-heavy broken beat jams – while bringing in his signature breezy, bubbling soulfulness. He's in peak form on this EP, which is all the better for having such excellent source material – including "Worth The Wait" by Nils Wulker feat Jill Scott, "Uncover Me" by Nina Lares, "Supernatural" by King, "As Is" by Dexter Story, "Lock & Key" by Amana Melome and "Games We Play" by Cherie Mathieson. ✨✧ Dwight TribleMothership ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2019. Used ... $9.99
One of the most amazing jazz vocalists of our generation returns here with an incredible group – a majestic combo to match all the spiritual inclinations in his music – with work from Kamasi Washington on tenor, Mark De Clive-Lowe on piano, Miguel Atwood Ferguson on viola, and both Carlos Nino and Derf Reklaw on percussion! Dwight Trible on his own is already more than enough to get us to run out and buy a record – but here, the combination of his unique voice with these musicians makes for an album that's an instant masterpiece – and one that even has lots of new colors and styles compared to some of Dwight's previous work! Songs include numbers by older west coast spiritual jazz heavyweights – like Horace Tapscott, Linda Hill, Nate Morgan, James Leary, and Jesse Sharps – mixed with some of Trible's own songs, and versions of work by Carmen Lundy, Oscar Brown Jr, and Donny Hathaway. From top to bottom, start to stop, the album's a treasure – with tracks that include "It's All About Love", "Thank You Master", "Song For My Mother", "Brother Where Are You", "Some Other Time", "These Things You Are To Me", "Desert Fairy Princess", and "Mothership". Common Good, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Warm electric work from the mighty Te'Amir Sweeney – a digital hero, finally winning over the world of wax – working here with studio help from Henry "Professor H" D'Ambrosio – and lyrics from a host of guests who include Jimetta Rose, Hugh Augustine, Godfrey At Large, Omar Offendum, and others! Many tracks have two MCs in action, which gives the record a collaborative feel – and even without the lyrics, the instrumental quality of the set is great – laidback and super-dope, with work on keyboards from Mark De Clive-Lowe and trippy guitar lines from Mike McTaggert. ✨✧ VariousFor JC – Love Is Supreme – Free Spirits Vol 2 ... CD
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 2006. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
70s spiritual soul jazz lives again – in this righteous tribute to the late John Coltrane! The incredible collection is filled with wonderful tracks both classic and current – and is a great bridge between the first waves of this kind of music at the end of the 60s, and the contemporary revival that's been going on at a global level! Perhaps the best thing here is the way that there's no apparent difference in sound or style between the old and new cuts – and the folks at Free Spirits have really found a way to make the whole thing flow together wonderfully by selecting music that's deeply soulful, extremely positive, and filled with soaring vocals and instrumental solos! Titles include "Mode For Trane" by Billy Gault, "Naima" by Mark De Clive-Lowe, "A Love Supreme" by Rufus Harley, "John Coltrane's A Love Supreme" by Karin Krog & Nils Lindberg, "Duke & Trane" by Haikki Samarto Ensemble, "John Coltrane" by Our Cry For Peace (Dwight Trible/Build An Ark), "Prince Of Peace" by Pharoah Sanders, "Liberation Of The Spirit" by Kamau Daaood, "Naima" by 4 Hero, and "A Love Supreme" by Dwight Trible.
