✨✧ Marion BrownGesprachsfetzen/In Sommerhausen ... CD
Calig/Moosicus (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... $17.99 19.99
A pare of rare European sessions from saxophonist Marion Brown – back to back on a single set! First up is Gesprachsfetzen – a really wonderful collaboration between alto saxophonist Marion Brown and vibist/reedman Gunter Hampel – a set that's maybe one of the sharpest to come out of their work together! The music has maybe even sharper edges than some of Brown's previous records – a dose of some of the European modernism in which Hampel was steeping himself, but also with some more organic, spiritual qualities on the solos – not just Brown's, but the work of trumpeter Ambrose Jackson – who's pretty great here too. AACM legend Steve McCall is also in the group on drums and percussion, along with bassist Buschi Niebergall – and the set was recorded live, with titles that include "Gesprachsfetzen", "Exhibit A", "Babudah", "Tomorrow Is The Beginning Of The End Of Yesterday", and "Aba". In Sommerhausen is one of the key records that alto saxophonist Marion Brown made while working on the German scene at the end of the 60s – an incredibly fruitful period that seemed to unlock all this new energy in Brown's music in a mode that was similar to what happened when Don Cherry started making time on the European scene! Brown's key partner here is Gunter Hampel – who plays vibes, bass clarinet, and percussion – the latter of which is handled by the other members of the group too – a lineup that includes Ambrose Jackson on trumpet, Daniel Laloux on bass, and Steve McCall on drums – playing here before his better-known work with the AACM. Jeanne Lee brings some lovely vocalizations to the set – and titles include "Dance No 1", "Exhibit B", "Il Ne Chant Pas", "The Sound Of A Song", and "Malipieros Midnight Theater". CD

Venus (Japan), 1992. Used ... $19.99 24.99
Beautifully mellow work from the great Marion Brown – playing here in a laidback quintet setting that brings out some of his most soulful tones. The group includes piano, guitar, bass, and drums – but the main focus is on the alto of Brown, which has a warm world-weary tone that's very different than that of his earlier avant work – but really wonderful overall! Other players include Tom McClung on piano, Jay Messer on guitar, Mike Marcus on bass, and Chris Dailey on drums – and titles include "After The Rain", "Ode To Coltrane", "Sky Entrance", "Terra", and "Berkshire Blues". Impulse, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99 On March 14, 2025
A strangely wonderful album from Marion Brown – quite different from his other work on Impulse, with a mellow electric edge that gives it a warm and laidback feel! The approach here is much more soulful than before – with finely crafted tunes that weave Brown's work on alto with electric piano by Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell, percussion by Ed Blackwell and Jimmy Hopps, and bass by Reggie Workman. If you're expecting the angrier Brown from earlier years, you'll be disappointed – but if you're ready to hear a Brown that's gently crafting mellow lines in a soulful setting, then you're in for a treat. Tracks include Cowell's "Maimoun", Stevie Wonder's "Visions", Brown's "Vista", "Moment of Truth", "Bismillah Rrahimani Rrahim", and "Djinji". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Marion BrownCapricorn Moon To Juba Lee (Marion Brown Quartet/Juba-Lee) ... CD
Ezz-Thetics/Hat Hut (Switzerland), Mid 60s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A CD that brings together some important early work from altoist Marion Brown – two long tracks from the sessions for his Quartet album on ESP – and a later album issued only overseas! The set begins with the long tracks "Capricorn Moon" and "Mephistopheles" from Marion Brown Quartet – one of our favorite albums ever on the legendary ESP label – a rhythmic, soulful, early session by Marion Brown – recorded before his own albums on Impulse, but with a similar feel to the best new thing sessions of that label at the time! The group is superb – with Benny Maupin on sax, Alan Shorter on trumpet, Rashied Ali on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass, often playing in tandem with Reggie Johnson – for a unique double-pulsing feel that makes for a nice rhythmic thrust. Next are the tracks "Juba Lee" and "Iditus", from the album Juba Lee – brilliant work from Marion Brown – one of his first albums, and a great set of tracks that have a fragile New York avant style – almost ESP, but not as raw, and with the kind of soulful emotion that's always made Brown's work stand out from the rest of his crowd. The group on the album is a septet, with Beaver Harris on drums, Dave Burrell on piano, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Alan Shorter on trumpet, and Grachan Moncour III on trombone. CD

✨✧ Marion BrownFive Improvisations ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1977. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Fantastic work from reedman Marion Brown – an unissued live set from the mid 70s, and one that features a whole new side of his talents! The music is definitely the improvisations promised in the title – but never in a free jazz sort of way, as Brown is working with a group, who have a nice sort of swing on all the tracks – and almost put Marion into hardbop territory that he hardly ever touched at this time! The whole performance is a unique glimpse at that much richer life that Brown was living overseas in the 70s – a time when he was connecting strongly with the jazz scene in Europe, in ways that were not always that well-documented on record – and also working on the American underground, but in ways that were different from some of his better-known material. This set is certainly one of those sides of his career – a beautifully swinging, soulful set that also features work from Brandon Ross on guitar, Jack Gregg on bass, and Steve McGreven on drums. Titles include "First Improvisation", "Second Improvisation", "Third Improvisation", and so on. CD

Genius early work from reedman Marion Brown – an album that was originally only issued overseas, where it was recorded – as part of that legacy that's always had Brown getting a lot more attention in Europe than back at home! Yet the record's a monster that stands equally with Marion's seminal sides for Impulse and ESP – and is maybe even bolder than both of them, as Brown blows alto in a loose trio – with Maarten Van Altena on bass and Han Bennink on drums – in a mode that definitely puts the "free" in free jazz – recorded before the start of both FMP and BYG! Yet there's also that sensitive, soulful quality that makes Brown so great – that element in the music that's always had recordings like these as key pointers forwards to the loft jazz years on the NYC scene – a brilliant blend of freedom and inner spirit – on titles that include "Sound Structure", "QBIC", "Porto Novo", and "Similar Limits". Brilliant early work by Marion Brown – both soulful and adventurous, less "out" than some of the other ESP albums from the time – and more in the post-Coltrane spirit of work by Pharoah Sanders and some of the Strata East crowd. The group on the album is a quartet – with Norris Jones on bass, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Rashied Ali on drums – and Brown's alto sax glides over the top in a tone that's infused with all the freedoms of the late 60s, yet also steeped in a soulful tradition of expressiveness. The album features 4 long tracks – "La Sorrella", "Fortunato", "Why Not", "Homecoming". CD

Free Lance (France), 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Spare, sensitive duets between the great Marion Brown and Mal Waldron – and a set that's every bit as wonderful as their previous outing for the Free Lance label! Waldron's always a treat in a setting like this – coming across with a more fragile, personal tone on his piano – one we really love, and which really gets at the full depth of his experience in jazz – evident with nearly every tone that emanates from his keys. Brown's at his best too – blowing mostly inside, but still relatively free – in a soulful mode that almost has his alto sax sounding like a soprano at times – gliding out wonderfully over Waldron's piano. Titles include "Inch Worm", "Soul Mates", "I Can't Get Started", "Someone To Watch Over Me", and "My Old Flame". CD

Hat Art (Switzerland), 1966/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of classic 60s albums from alto player Marion Brown – back to back in a single set! First up is Three For Shepp – an unbelievable recording! As Archie Shepp made his first album for Impulse a tribute to Coltrane, Marion Brown made his a tribute to Shepp – a wonderful lineage of avant talent in the 60s, stated boldly here, given Brown's amazing talent on the record! The album's filled with hard, soulful playing that goes out, but never too far – like Shepp in his best sixties moments – and Brown's working with a great lineup of players that includes Grachan Moncur on trombone, Beaver Harris on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano! The tunes include three Marion Brown originals on side one, plus three tracks by Shepp on side two. "Spooks" alone will leave you loving this album for years to come – and other tracks include "West India", "Delicado", "New Blue", and "Fortunato". A brilliant blend of 60s "new thing" playing and 70s underground jazz! The set features Brown working with the European group Jazz Cuisson – with a lineup that includes guitar, timbales, percussion, and bass – all grooving in a style that has some very nice Latin and African influences, and which allow Brown to freely solo over the grooves. The sound's never too out – and stays in a percussively-driven mode through most of the session – making the album a real standout in Brown's catalog of the time! A sweet set of duets from a couple of greats – pianist Mal Waldron and alto saxophonist Marion Brown! The setting is nice and spare – just alto from Marion Brown and piano from Waldron – the former played with this beautifully open, honest tone – still some of the darkness of Waldron's more adventurous dates of the 70s, but also this incredibly personal quality too – a sense of maturity, experience, and almost melancholy that really sets the tone for the album – and helps bring out some richly expressive lines from Brown's horn. Tracks include Monk's "Blue Monk", Waldron's "A Cause De Monk", Brown's "To The Lady In Her Graham Cracker Window", McCoy Tyner's "Contemplation", Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing" and more! Moosicus (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
The musical legacy of saxophonist Marion Brown knows no bounds – and although he gave the world some key studio records that helped define his role in the late 60s and early 70s, his live performances on this planet were an equally important demonstration of the righteous power he brought to his music! This rare 1969 concert from Germany is a key addition to that legacy of important Brown performances – and features the alto saxophonist in a very cool group with Ed Kroeger on trombone, blowing all these soulful lines next to Brown's alto – very spiritual throughout, at a level that really makes us which we knew more about his work. There's no piano in the group at all – just excellent bass from Sigi Busch, and drums from a young AACM hero Steve McCall – on titles that include "Ode To Coltrane", "Mary Ann", "Juba Lee", "Study For Four Instruments", "Modus Rhythmicus", and "Exhibition". Freedom/ORG, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Stunning duets from these key improvisers – a set recorded in Paris, and done with a stripped-down and freely playful vibe that's very much like some of the best AACM material of the time! Wadada Leo Smith blows trumpet, Marion Brown is on alto – and both players bring percussion into the mix too – as they shift between shorter and longer improvisations, all handled with that special ear for sonic textures that makes them such subtle giants in their field! The style is very different than the more spiritual vibe of some of Brown's larger group performances from the period – and very much in the spirit of more intimate improvisational recordings that Wadada would issue more often in years to come. Titles include "Rhythmus 1", "Centering", "And Then They Danced", and "Njung Lumumba Malcolm". LP, Vinyl record album

Vintage work from this overlooked group from the New York scene of the 80s – an all-star lineup that features Ahmed Abdullah on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto sax, Billy Bang on violin, Sirone and Fred Hopkins on bass, and Andrew Cyrille on drums! The tracks are long, and there's a loose, open feel that recalls the loft jazz generation – but an overall sound that shows the new strength and focus that some of these players were really hitting at the time – that sharper vision that you'd get during the early years of Black Saint/Soul Note – yet presented here in a style that's much more spontaneous overall! Brown and Bang are especially nice – some of the sharpest corners of this sextet – and titles include a great reading of "Goodbye Porkpie Hate", plus "La Placita", "Shift Below", "Joann's Green Satin Dress", and "Amanpondo". Impulse/Jazzman (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An essential look at the spiritual jazz legacy of Impulse Records – a set that's maybe a bit overdue in this series, given that Impulse first opened the door to these modes with their recordings of John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in the 60s! For some reason, Impulse had a perfect ear for this music – able to let players stretch out and be free, but also work some of the earlier modal jazz impulses into longer-form tunes that still had a pulse of rhythm – and which were often a bit different than the freer jazz styles on a label like ESP. Make no mistake, there's plenty of improvisation going on here – but it's also part of the larger, unified spirit of the tunes – a real message in the music, on selections that include "Sister Mamie" by Yusef Lateef, "Three Flowers" by McCoy Tyner, "7th Day" by Freddie Hubbard, "Half & Half" by Elvin Jones, "Groove Waltz" by McCoy Tyner, "The Blessing Song" by Michael White, "Turiya & Ramakrishna" by Alice Coltrane, "A Taste Of Honey" by Phil Woods, "Constant Trob (part 1)" by John Klemmer, "Hum Allah Hum Allah Hum Allah" by Pharoah Sanders, "Maimoun" by Marion Brown, "Lonesome Lover" by Max Roach, "Fantszm" by Elvin Jones, "Acknowledgement" by John Coltrane, "Thembi" by Pharoah Sanders, and "Journey In Satchidananda" by Alice Coltrane. And let us say that even if you have some of these tracks on other records, there's something completely sublime about the way the whole thing is put together – and the way the tracks sound next to each other! Porter, 1965. Used ... Out Of Stock
A long lost quartet recording led by pianist Burton Greene recorded at the Woodstock Playhouse in 1965! It's incredible stuff, from the loose, sparse and lyrical sounds to the more muscular, tense and riveting passages. Just a read of the lineup is exciting – Greene's working with drummer Rashied Ali, Marion Brown on alto sax and Reggie Johnson on bass – and the sounds live up to promise! The centerpiece of the set is a longer run through of the Greene composition "Cluster Quartet" that appeared on his Burton Greene Quartet LP on ESP the same year (although we think Brown is the only player on this live set who appeared on the LP), while the set opens with the lighter and moodier, "Tree Theme II". The nearly half hour closer "Like It Is" works in both the heavier and the sparer dynamics. We can only hope Porter Records continues to bring such amazing rare jazz to light! CD

Maurice McIntyre plays here with a sound that's already fully formed – an approach to the tenor that's as searingly human as that of Pharoah Sanders or Albert Ayler – but which is also played with a sharpness at times that recalls a young Marion Brown. The rest of the group is equally well-matched – a tremendous array of talent from the Chicago scene, with Malachi Favors on bass, Thurman Barker and Ajaramu on drums, Leo Smith on trumpet and flugelhorn, John Stubblefield on soprano sax, and Amina Claudine Myers on piano. George Hines vocalizes a bit on a few tracks – singing in a spiritual tone that's somewhat like Leon Thomas, but much freer and more abstract – and the album beautifully balances shorter musical statements with a fuller suite on side two – showing the deeper, more ambitious expressions that were starting to well up in the AACM. Titles include the tremendous "Humility In The Light Of Creator", plus "Hexagon", "Kcab Emoh", "Pluto Calling", "Life Force", and "Suite – Ensemble Fate". CD also features a bonus version of the title track! CD

✨✧ Archie SheppFire Music (white background) ... LP
Impulse, 1965. Near Mint- Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Fantastic stuff – easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! The album features Shepp leading a crack "new thing" line up that includes Ted Curson on trumpet, Marion Brown on alto, Joe Chambers on drums, Reggie Johnson on bass, and the lesser-known Joseph Orange on trombone – all playing in a beautifully poised manner, never too far out and free, but with all the dynamic energy of the best jazz changes of the 60s! There's a vibe here that's similar to some of the Blue Note "new thing" work by players like Grachan Moncur, Jackie McLean, and Tony Williams from the time – but there's a vision that's also wider and deeper, too, given the size of the group and the way they interact. Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! LP, Vinyl record album

A pair of crucial albums from Archie Shepp – back to back in a single set! Fire Music is easily one of Archie Shepp's greatest albums, and certainly one of the pivotal points of 60s avant garde jazz! Titles include "Hambone", "Los Olvidados", "Malcolm Malcolm–Semper Malcolm", and an insane cover of "Girl From Ipanema". You can't go wrong with this one – trust us! Mama Too Tight features growing brilliance from the young Archie Shepp – a record that's not just about Archie's own amazing work on the tenor, but also his keen modern vision as a leader! The combo here is an ensemble that features some of the hippest modernists of the 60s – Roswell Rudd and Grachan Moncur on trombone, Perry Robinson on clarinet, Howard Johnson on tuba, Charlie Haden on bass, and Tommy Turrentine on trumpet – making a rare non-bop appearance here, and further enforcing our already-high estimation of his talents! The style's somewhat in the "new thing" mode of the period, but it's also a bit more tightly arranged too – almost hitting Mingus-like modes for the bigger ensemble – balancing the force of the group together with very free, bold solo impulses from the players. Side one features the extended "Portrait Of Robert Thompson (As A Young Man)" – and side two features "Mama Too Tight", "Theme For Ernie", and "Basheer". CD

Freedom/Muzak (Japan), Late 1960s/Early 1970s. New Copy 2CD Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A double-length dive into the killer catalog of Freedom Records – an imprint that recorded some of the hippest avant jazz of the late 60s/early 70s generation – and one that was not just an outlet for players who sometimes never got a chance to record that often, but also a place where some key artists found their first place to shine! There's tracks here that are a crucial bridge between American and European avant gardes – and the cuts here echo work of the time on other labels like BYG, America, and ESP – kind of a lost piece of the puzzle in experimental jazz! 2CD set features 21 tracks in all – and titles include "Lori Song" by Art Ensemble Of Chicago, "Crucificado" by Archie Shepp, "D Trad That's What" by Cecil Taylor, "Happy Fool" by Ornette Coleman, "On The Nile" by Charles Tolliver, "Travelling Man" by Stanley Cowell, "Soprano Ballad" by Anthony Braxton, "Quiet Dawn" by Andrew Hill, "Closer" by Paul Bley, "And They Danced" by Marion Brown & Leo Smith, "Lonely Blacks" by Oliver Lake, "Queen Anne" by Noah Howard, "Tears For Dolphy" by Ted Curson, "Nefertitie" by Jan Garbarek, "Summertime" by Albert Ayler, "Eighty First Street" by Gato Barbieri & Dollar Brand. ✨✧ VariousWildflowers – The Complete New York Loft Jazz Sessions (3CD set) ... CD
Douglas/Knit Classics, 1976. Used 3 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Seminal work from the New York avant scene of the mid 70s – an important series of recordings done by Alan Douglas, and sides that initially broke the creative spirit of the scene to a much wider audience! There's a loose, openly creative spirit to these recordings that's a marked change from the intensity of the New York avant recordings of the 70s – a maturity, and confidence, that's come from some of the players' previous work in avant scenes in Chicago, St Louis, and elsewhere – coming together in New York's limelight with some really amazing energy! This 3CD set brings together tracks from all 5 volumes of the original LPs – over 3 hours' of music, with work by players who include Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre and David Murray on tenors; Ken McIntyre, Marion Brown, Oliver Lake, Jimmy Lyons, and Byard Lancaster on alto saxes; Randy Weston, Anthony Davis, and Sonelius Smith on piano; Ted Daniel, Leo Smith, and Olu Dara on trumpet; Khan Jamal on vibes, George Lewis on trombone, Jerome cooper on percussion, and many others too! ✨✧ David Wertman Sun EnsembleEarthly Delights ... LP
Sweet Earth/BBE (UK), 1978. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A classic of 70s avant spiritual jazz – issued on the tiny Sweet Earth label, which was also home to some very special records from Sun Ra and Marion Brown! Bassist David Wertman is a lot more obscure than those bigger names, but he was part of the New York loft jazz scene in those crucial mid 70s years – and had associations with Arthur Blythe, Billy Bang, Steve Reid, and other key members of the group – all heavyweights that Wertman can easily stand next to with the strength of the material on this set! The sounds here are a fantastic combination of larger ideas and more spontaneous creation – almost in an AACM mode, but a bit more spiritual overall – with David's bass at the helm of a group that includes David Swerdlove on alto and soprano sax, John Hagen on tenor and soprano, John Sprague on flutes, Greg Wall on baritone, and John Zieman on keyboards. Drummer Jay Conway really provides some great energy to keep things lively and moving – and titles include "Oh John Love Trane", "Clear Air Dancer", "Earthly Delights", and "Relations". ✨✧ Lennie Tristano & Warne MarshIntuition ... CD
Capitol, Late 40s/1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic modernist jazz from the 50s, long out of print in the US, and issued here in a beautiful CD that includes a huge amount of tracks and good notes on the material! Half of the CD is a reissue of Warne Marsh's rare Jazz Of Two Cities album, a killer two-tenor workout with an icy cool feel, and Marsh and Ted Brown heading up the frontline. Compositions were contributed by Brown, and by Ronnie Ball, who plays piano on the album – and tracks include "Smog Eyes", "Ear Conditioning", "Dixie's Dilemma", and "Quintessence". The other half of the material is culled from Lennie Tristano's late 40's recordings for Capitol, sessions that are often cited as the birth of the cool jazz sound, and which feature key members of the Tristano school, like Lee Konitz, Billy Bauer, and Marsh – who gives some of his earliest recorded work on the tracks. Titles include "Intuition", "Digression", "Crosscurrent", and "Marionette". Beautifully haunting stuff, and material that we're very excited to see reissued again! CD
