Mario AdnetJobim Jazz ... CD
Adventure Music, 2007. Used ... $6.99
Jazz versions of classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim – all done by a group arranged and directed by guitarist Mario Adnet, and featuring guest work from Joyce, Helio Delmiro, Romero Lumbambo, and others! The sound here is really fresh – not merely just a reworking of Jobim's original ideals, but a recasting of them in lightly arranged modes that often take on the shapes, colors, and textures of work by Moacir Santos – styles that are warm, but often have some sharper edges underneath, thanks to great interplay between the instruments. Bits of horns, guitar, piano, and percussion all come together with a tremendous sense of grace – and titles include "Tema Jazz", "Sue Ann", "Domingo Sincopado", "So Danco Samba", "Paulo Voo Livre", "Polo Pony", and "Bate Boca". Mario BiondiDare ... LP
Sony (Germany), 2021. Sealed 2LP Gatefold ... $14.99 19.99
Mario Biondi looks a bit angelic on the cover, but his vocals are still nicely down to earth – that wonderfully raspy charm that made us love his music right from the start, and which makes Mario one of the key folks to carry forward the legacy of older jazz singers like Mark Murphy or Mose Allison! Part of that legacy is heard here in remakes of classic Blue Note tunes – but there's also plenty of Biondi's own touches as well – partly in the original songs he brings to the date, but also in the work with Italian groups like the High Five Quintet and Fabrizio Bosso Spiritual Jazz Trio – not to mention his own group, led by keyboardist Massimo Greco – and work on two tracks by Incognito too! With all that instrumental talent on board, the album's a jazzy delight throughout – and titles include "Jeannine", "Paradise", "No Show", "Cantaloupe Island", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Give Our Love Another Chance", "Dream For Two", "Sunny Days", and "Simili". Mario Goossens & Karel Van MileghemParadise City – Healing Cities With Music (hardcover) ... Book
Lannoo (Belgium), 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 45.00
The book might have a lofty goal, but it's a great one too – and is illustrated here with a big range of full color photographs from the cities that get the attention of the authors! The book has sections on New Orleans, Detroit, Port Au Prince, Belfast, Hiroshima, and Kigali – each presented with full color photographs of both musicians and the scene, plus some cityscapes as well – next to interviews with local artists and creative figures – all very well done, without the kind of "soft gloss" approach that some projects of this nature might engage! The photographs of Detroit are especially dear to our heart, and really get at the nature of the city that we love and experience when we shop for records – and the book is hardcover, full color, and 188 pages in length. Mario LunaBeyond Heaven – Chicago House Party Flyers Vol 3 – From 1983 to 1992 ... Book
Almighty & Insane Books, 2022. New Copy ... $16.99 20.00
A wonderful look at a lost, secret side of the house music scene in Chicago – rare flyers and posters that were used to draw people into the sort of underground events that really helped the music blossom in the Windy City – maybe the only lasting document of musical moments that built up together to shape the sound of the global club scene well into the 21st century! This third volume is every bit as cool as the previous one – filled with page after page of full-color reproductions of the sorts of things that formed a special network for fans of house music back in the day – a pre-internet way to find out about all the secret spots that were really helping grow the music. There's also a bit of an introduction in the front, and a few images of playlists from WBMX, the big house station – and one from Loop Records, another important spot. We lived through these years in our city – and the book does a fantastic job of sharing the magic of the early years of house with the rest of the world! Book

Mario MigliardiA Come Andromeda ... CD
Universal/GDM (Italy), 1971. New Copy ... $19.99 About February 1, 2023
Very gripping music for this early 70s Italian TV thriller – scored with a wonderfully offbeat style by Mario Migliardi! Some tracks are sweet and breezy, while others are extremely dark – some of the darkest we've heard in Italian film score work of the time! These cuts have some very unique orchestrations – and often echo a 20th century classical mode at points, sometimes with a bit of electronics – but in ways that are quite different from the atonal 70s sounds of Morricone – much more dramatic, and filled with sharp notes and fast changes – instrumentation that bursts out with an almost improvisational quality at points. The mellower tracks stand out even more strongly than usual amidst this avant instrumentation – but they only underscore the overall darkness of the soundtrack by their presence. Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni do a bit of singing on the record – but most cuts are instrumental, and the reissue features a total of 24 tracks in all. CD

Mario MolinoBeat Gregoriano ... LP
Leonardi/We Are Busy Bodies, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
An album that really takes the "beat" in its title seriously – as the set's got plenty of heavy drums, right from the start – and at a level that's very different than the usual Italian sound library set of the time! The vibe is more rock than jazz or easy – and the heavy drums are topped by guitar turned up with plenty of fuzz – almost a psych take on the "shake" or "jerk" modes of the European instrumental scene of the late 60s – but with some funky currents in the rhythms that would be right at home in Memphis soul too! Titles include "Love For Phone", "Lamento Beat", "Mangusta", "Avocadro", "Cortante", "Giantollo", "Kiss For Flavia", and "Povero Capellone". LP, Vinyl record album

Mario NascimbeneScent Of Mystery ... LP
Ramrod, 1960. Very Good+ ... $9.99 11.99
A great little score for a well-titled movie – given that Scent Of Mystery was the very first film ever issued in "Smell-O-Vision"! The film's big theatrical gimmick was that screenings were accompanied by a variety of odors to match the action or setting on the screen – but apart from that nose-centrist reading of the movie, we're much more appreciative of Mario Nascimbene's soundtrack music, which is an even greater delight for the ears! Mario's probably best known for later Italian scores, yet this effort has a very similar feel – lots of playful melodies and jazz-styled themes that would be right at home in a Fellini flick – especially given the way that Nascimbene sometimes adds a bit of drama, then drops it out in favor of the groovier elements at play. Titles include "The Chase", "Pamplona Stomp", "The Shadow Turns", "Gaudix Guitar", "Diana Dors Blues", "Organ Accident", "Butterfly", and "Party Guitar". Also features 2 tunes with vocals by Eddie Fisher. LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono pressing with deep groove. Cover has some surface wear, a split on the top seam, and and index sticker on the spine.)

Enrico Rava & Mario RuscaDNA (clear red vinyl) (2022 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Saar Milano (Italy), 1997. New Copy ... $29.99 36.99
An overlooked gem from the Italian scene of the 90s – a set that features the sparkling trumpet work of Enrico Rava next to the bold piano lines of Mario Rusca – both coming together here with the vibe of some lost session from the Rom scene of the 60s and 70s! Rusca works here with his core trio – Lucio Terzano on bass and Tony Arco on drums – and on three of the album's tracks, the trio stands alone – great enough together, although the presence of Rava makes things especially nice on the remaining tracks – and Enrico blows in a way that's very different than some of his other late 90s material. Titles include "Chromosome Blues", "DNA", "How High The Moon", "Flawless", and "You & The Night & The Music". LP, Vinyl record album

Mario RuscaMonochrome Blues ... LP
Mono Jazz (Italy), 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $34.99
The first record we've heard in years from Italian pianist Mario Rusca – and a set that really lives up to the strength of all of his classic material from back in the day! The album's a beautifully recorded set – done in mono, which seems to bring an even richer quality to the sound of the piano in the hands of Rusca – deep, round tones that ring out beautifully in a set that's heavy on original compositions – and which features work from Riccardo Fioravanti on bass and Tony Arco on drums. The spirit of the record is like one of those lost Italian jazz treasures from the 60s – the kind of record would normally change hands for hundreds of dollars – and the double-length set is overflowing with gems – on titles that include "Monocrhome Blues", "Double Horn", "Tempo Blues", "Blue Dream", and versions of "Infant Eyes", "Blues For Gwen", "Blues Walk", "Blue Minor", "Rachid", and "Bass Blues". La Stelle Di Mario SchifanoDedicato A (180 gram purple vinyl pressing) ... LP
BDS/AMS (Italy), 1967. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
One of the most important Italian rock albums of the late 60s – even though it's a set that was virtually lost at the time! In some way, the set's a bit like the first album by The Velvet Underground – in that it was presented by an underground artist, Mario Schifano – and features really weird and wild music that was years ahead of its time – and, like the first album by the Velvets, the set sold very little upon release, but has become the stuff of legend over the years! There's a wonderfully freaky vibe to the whole thing – some freewheeling jams with lots of heavy guitar next to earthy percussion, odd organ lines, piano, and even a bit of flute – all topped with vocals that are mostly in the farther reaches, save for one cut that has a female singer sounding a bit more straightforward. Tracks include the side-long "Le Ultime Parole Di Brandimante" – plus "E Dopo", "Intervallo", "Molto Lontano", and "Susan Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Mario Rua SilvaStories From Another Time 1982 to 1988 ... LP
Time Capsule (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy ... About July 20, 2022 (delayed)
Stories from another time and place – and music that's almost without comparison, either – as the set brings together material recorded by Angolan guitarist Mario Rui Silva, a musician whose range of expression stretches far past his West African roots! There's a heck of a lot going on here – definitely plenty of the acoustic guitar pictured on the cover, but often used with sensitivity that's more Brazilian than you'd expect – and interspersed with tracks that have other instrumentation in the lead, including balafon – sometimes spare instrumentals, sometimes vocal numbers – mostly acoustic, but with a few electric elements from time to time. The music has both a complexity and really organic mixing of modes – maybe a bit like some of the global experiments that you might have found on the Crammed label at the time, but also very unique to Mario himself too. Titles include "Ngisumba", "Mgeni", "Kazum Zum Zum", "Maniku", "Lembranca De Um Veho", "Depois De Uma Conversa", "Kabanza K'Etu", and "Dembita". LP, Vinyl record album

Bassist Mario Pavone makes for a surprisingly great choice to duet here with the reeds of Anthony Braxton – as Pavone's got a richly responsive way of improvising, one that almost creates these little shadows of sound behind Braxton's lead! The approach is extremely resonant – really bringing the players sensibilities together wonderfully, and making for a record that's almost warmer than other Braxton dates of this nature – especially when Anthony plays it a little straight on the album's readings of "I Remember You" and "Stablemates". Other titles include "Composition No 65", "Composition No 6(0)", "Composition No 135", and "The Call". CD

Beat (Italy), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great music for one of the trippiest westerns ever recorded during the spaghetti generation – served up here with instrumentation that often has a lot more psychedelic touches than other western scores of the time! Mario Migliardi didn't do that much soundtrack work in the period, but he really knocks it out of the park with this one – using fuzz guitar, sound effects, and all sorts of weird ways of recording familiar instruments, thanks to the "Leslie effect" – which creates this insane sense of mood and moment, but all with qualities that are so different than you might find in the music of Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai! It's a bit hard to describe the genius of the record in words, but it's there from the very first note, and just gets better and better – as the set moves through almost 80 minutes of music over the course of 21 tracks. Grand Royal, 1993. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $37.99 39.99
If Paul's Boutique was the Beasties' psychedelic hip hop Sgt Peppers, then Check Your Head is their White Album – a raw, stylistically sprawling, yet always connected batch of live instrumentation – backing rhymes that range from stream of consciousness to expertly written. Check Your Head is also their first outing without the guidance of outside producers, though the trio did bring in a host of regular collaborators like Money Mark and Mario Caldato Jr, who work as well with the Boys as ever. It's stunning how far The Beastie Boys grew creatively over their first few albums, and this point is pretty close to perfection! Two albums from tenorist Junior Cook! Good Cookin' has 6 tracks with Walter Booker on bass, Al Dailey on piano, Slide Hampton on trombone, Bill Hardman on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mario Rivera on baritone sax, and Leroy Williams on drums. Somethin's Cookin' is a nice little cooker from Junior – with no pun on the artist or title intended! The album's one of Cook's few sets as a leader, and arguably has an even better focus than most of the rest – thanks to strong production from Cedar Walton, who's also backing Junior for the record with his trio of Billy Higgins on drums and Buster Williams on bass. The groove is nice and fluid – in the best Walton way that combines warmth with a sense of free-soaring energy – and Junior's solos seem a bit more hard-bitten than before, but still with that sense of lyrical warmth that he developed with Horace Silver. Titles include "Chi Chi", "Hindsight", "Heavy Blue", "Illusion Of Grandeur", "Fiesta Espanol", and "Detour Ahead". CD

The legendary Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo is at his most dynamic here – effortlessly blending funky jazz, soul, and bits of prog – all at that level that soon made him a legend in the clubs! Tullio's a hell of a drummer at the core – you'll know that if you've ever heard his solo work – and here, he uses his masterful style on the kit alongside bits of vocals, guitar, and bass – plus some great work on saxes and flute from Larry Nocella and Giorgio Baiocco! There's some added percussion at many points too – and Tullio handles rototom, congas, and timpani next to his work on drums – stretching out with some help on arrangements from jazz talents Sante Palumbo and Mario Rusca too. Seriously distinctive, certain to stand the test of time underground hip hop from Seattle's DoNormaal! There's something almost fiercely contemporary in the sounds, rhymes and style on Third Daughter – not that it hews to current trends, just that it doesn't lean on past sounds and styles in anyway. The producers build the sound for her voice and vision really well, pairing her sometimes confessional, sometimes cryptic, sometimes disarmingly childlike lyricism and varied flow to varied beats, bass and bits of melody to suit. It's also nice showcase for a diverse crew of producers including Brakebill, TMLO, Jack City, Fish Narc, Joe Valley, Joel, Mario Casalini, Wolftone and Bobby Davis – and tracks include "Fraught", "Ego Slave", "Emotional", "Okie Doke", "Gold Rooster", "Lyf So", "Heat Lullaby", "My Teacher" feat Raven Hollywood, "Buckle", "Magic DoNormaal", "Revenge", "Take A Walk", "Don't Make Me Wait" Wolftone, "Ur Side", "Grieves" and more. Sonorama (Germany), 1968. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
A lost bit of dreamy bossa from the 60s – recorded in Brazil at the end of the decade, but unavailable to most of the world for years! The session's got a gently snapping, always jazzy approach that easily matches the best takes on the bossa coming out from Rio and LA at the time – and the album's done in a style that really makes best use of the warmly soulful piano lines of Dom Salvador, while also hitting some harder rhythms that bristle with plenty of bossa jazz energy, thanks to the presence of drummer Wilson Das Neves! Vocals are often in a mode that showcases singer Valeria, but with support from harmonies on the chorus – and the record's got a sunny sort of groove that almost reminds us of classics by Mario Castro Neves & Samba SA! Bebel GilbertoTanto Tempo Remixes ... CD
Six Degrees/Ziriguiboom, 2001. Used ... $1.99
Everybody's favorite bossa album just got a little better! Bebel Gilberto's Tanto Tempo set is one of the recent runaway hits of Brazilian music – a lively set of modern bossa tunes that has crossed over with listeners around the globe, bringing the sound of the bossa to a whole new generation of listeners. Now, the set's designed to go even further – as it's remixed by a host of DJs and producers from the global groove underground! The package is really well done – not just a bunch of naff "pump up the beat" type tunes, but very thoughtful explorations of the melodies and rhythms of the original tunes, mostly handled by artists whose own recording work is largely in the Brazilian or bossa idiom. Tunes include "August Day Song" remixed by Da Lata, "Sem Contencao" remixed by Truby Trio, "Alguem" remixed by Ananda Project, "Tanto Tempo" remixed by Peter Kruder, "So Nice" remixed by Mario Caldato, "Close Your Eyes" remixed by Faze Action, "Samba Da Bencao" remixed by 4 Hero, and "Tanto Tempo" remixed by Chari Chari. Grant Green's last session as a leader – and although the tracks are a bit slicker than earlier work, the album's still pretty darn nice. The tracks are long in a CTI-type funky jazz mode, with arrangements by Mario Sprouse, and a nice little Latin feel to some of the best numbers. Green's solo ability is still quite good – and on the more uptempo tunes, he solos with that versatility and amazing dexterity that you'd find on his best earlier sessions. Other tracks have him in a mellower, more chromatic and Wes Montgomery-inspired mode – and titles include "Empanada", "Three Times A Day", "Nighttime In The Switching Yard", "Easy", and "Wave". Groove Holmes is definitely dancing in the sun here – working with full arrangements from Mario Sprouse, in a sweetly soulful style that's not unlike Johnny Hammond at the time! Groove still plays Hammond on most numbers – but also a bit of mini Korg too – and although the backdrops are in a fully-arranged jazz funk mode, there's still a strong focus on Holmes' keyboard lines up front, which still get plenty of space to stretch out and do their thing. Sprouse plays a bit of keyboards on the record too – and titles include a remake of "Misty", plus "Let's Groove", "Dancing In the Sun", "Highway Of Life", and "Calypso Holiday". CD

Seu JorgeCarolina ... LP
Mr Bongo (UK), 2002. New Copy 2LP ... $27.99 28.99
A HUGE batch of samba-soul grooves from Seu Jorge! Jorge previously knocked around Brazil as a member of the late 90s pop group Farofa Carioca, but his first solo outing is a massive step forward into the upper echelon of the Brazilian scene! Like the best of his contemporaries, Jorge uses the rich history of samba and bossa as a springboard – but it's the pronounced contemporary qualities, such as production and mix work by Beastie Boy producer Mario Caldato – that push Carolina way over the top and make it much more than a genre exercise! The title track echoes the earlier work of Jorge Ben, who actually pens the reggae-inflected tune "Em Nagoya Eu Vi Eriko", and the tracks "Mangueira" and "O Samba Tai" have the classic samba groove and crisp background vocals that would sound right in place on Tom Ze's Se O Caso E Chorar. "Hagua" has a deep reggae thump, and nearly everything here has kind of a 70s soul feel thanks to some bright, almost Kool & The Gang-like horn arrangements! The group includes Azymuth drummer Mamao, Paulinho Black on bass, Banda Black Rio's William Magalhaes on keyboards, and Josimar Monteiro on violin. Another great new solo artist from Brazil, and one that we expect amazing things from in the years to come! LP, Vinyl record album

A real corker from Machito – a set that's got a lot more bite and earthy fire than some of his other albums of the 50s – as you might be able to guess from the cover and the title! The record definitely lives up to the Afro-Cuban promise on the front – thanks to very hip arrangements from Mario Bauza and AK Salim – who balance core rhythmic elements with some great modern jazz solo contributions – from key players who include Johnny Griffin on tenor, Cannonball Adderley on alto, Joe Newman on trumpet, and Eddie Bert on trombone – all coming together under Machito's leadership with a sound that's much bolder than most of his work in a straighter Latin mode! The album's a key meeting of styles – as powerful today as it was when first recorded – and tracks include the great "Congo Mulence", a very tight groover – plus "Turuato", "Frenzy", "Cannonology", "Minor Rama", and "Wild Jungle". Mindblowing work from the Italian soundtrack scene of the 60s and 70s – a true treasure of tracks that more than lives up to the "psycho beat" promise of its title! The tunes are a heady brew of tripped-out styles – floating organ, slinking bass, stepping strings, fuzzy guitar, and bumping drums – all in a space that's just the right place between funky and easy – with a sublime kind of sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! If you've only ever dug funky groovers from the Anglo side of the spectrum, this is the kind of record that will definitely open up your ears – and even though the collection's an old one, it's still one of the best illustrations around of the genius of Italy at the time! A set that's even better than you'd guess from the title – as the music here is from a really nice range of sources, and has a spirit that's very much its own – neither in the range of more familiar Italo Disco, nor some of the chintzier pop tracks of the time! Instead, the project's coming at the music with the same love of obscure, underground tracks that the Four Flies label has brought to their soundtrack and sound library reissues – and given that some of the numbers here are funky instrumentals, we're betting that they started out in the world of library music, then started to add some great vocal cuts too! Production is great – and there's a nice punch and polish to most cuts – but again, none of the too-slick modes you'd hear on the charts – instead maybe like some of the cooler, more laidback California productions of the mid 70s. A wealth of work we never would have heard otherwise – with titles that include "In Alto Mare" by Mario Lavezzi, "Bianco E Nero" by Barnaba, "Smettila" by Jim Porto, "Vienimi A Pigliare" by I Ricci, "C'E Una Donna Sola" by Massimo Stella, "Se Ti Va Cosi" by Serafini, "La Mia Nave" by Stefano Pulga, "Mo" by Peppino Di Capri, "Solo Mo" by Enzo Cervo, and "California Bill" by Alberto Radius. Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. All material is very well-recorded – these aren't rough or unfinished tracks at all – and the whole thing should just be thought of as a first chapter for the group, right before they started putting out their famous records. ✨✧ Alexandre Desplat & OthersFrench Dispatch ... LP
Abkco, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A completely charming soundtrack for an equally charming film – a set that mixes together the instrumental music created by Alexandre Desplat for the Wes Anderson film The French Dispatch, and a number of the full songs that were used as snippets during the movie! Desplat's compositions are great – able to shift in mode and tone for the different stories featured in the narrative, but all cohesive enough to support the whimsy and wit of Anderson's direction. And these cuts are balanced out by a number of French songs and other soundtrack themes from earlier generations – woven together in the best Wes Anderson way. These cuts include "Tu M'As Trop Menti" by Chantal Goya, "Inseguimento Al Taxi" by Mario Nascimbene, "I've Seen That Face Before Me" by Grace Jones, "Fiasco" by Gus Viseur, "J'En Deduis Que Je T'Aime" by Charles Aznavour, "L'Ultima Volta" by Ennio Morricone, "Adagio" by Georges Delerue, "Aline" by Jarvis Cocker, and "Fugue No 2" by The Swingle Singers. ✨✧ Dizzy Gillespie & MachitoAfro-Cuban Jazz Moods ... CD
Pablo/OJC, 1975. Used ... Out Of Stock
A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". CD

✨✧ Tito PuenteParty At Puente's Place – On Broadway/Mambo Diablo ... CD
Concord, 1983/1985. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
2 different albums from Tito Puente – nicely packaged here in a single set! On Broadway is not really a "Broadway" album, as you might guess from the title – although Tito and group do play a version of the soul hit "On Broadway" on the set – but a nicely-honed set with a strong Latin jazz groove, much more back to basics than some of Tito's work from the 70s. Players include Ray Gonzales, Jorge Dalto, Afredo De La Fe, and Jerry Gonzales – and tracks include versions of Freddie Hubbard's "First Light", Milton Nascimento's "Soul Song", and Toots Thieleman's "Bluesette" – as well as the originals "Jo Je Ti" and "TP's Especial". Mambo Diablo is a stone cooker from Tito Puente's great back to basics years of the 80s – a time when he was really moving towards the Latin jazz of his roots – working without any singers, or any contemporary gimmicks, and letting loose with tight combos and top-line jazz players! This set features Puente on vibes, timbales, and percussion – grooving nicely with the great Sonny Bravo on piano, whose bold lines definitely help shape the grooves – giving them plenty of New York 60s pulse, alongside work by Jimmy Frisuara on trumpet and trombone, Mario Rivera on soprano and tenor, and Ray Gonzalez on trumpet. Bobby Rodriguez handles bass, and Johnny "Dandy" Rodriguez brings in added percussion with congalero Jose Madara – and tracks include "Take Five", "Mambo Diablo", "Pick Yourself Up", "Eastern Joy Dance", "China", and "No Pienses Asi". ✨✧ Chamaco RamirezAlive & Kicking (remastered edition) ... CD
Fania, 1979. Used ... Out Of Stock
A pretty sweet late 70s salsa set from Chamaco Ramirez – a wonderful singer best remembered for his work in the 60s & 70s for bandleader Tommy Olivencia – and this is the one-and-only solo album to Chamaco's name! Alive & Kicking was released in 1979, and in a bit of sad irony, came out just a few years before Ramirez was killed, but sad history aside, it's a nice little record! Arrangements are by Javier Vazquez – and the group features lots of strong trumpet from Chocolate Armanteros, and tenor from Mario Rivera. Titles include "San Agustin", "Rumba Moderna", "Cuando Manda El Corazon", "Kikiriki", "Respetala", "No Es Vacilon", "Fania" and more. CD

✨✧ Roberto RoenaRoberto Roena Y Su Apollo Sound 3 ... CD
Fania, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Bold, righteous grooves from Roberto Roena – grooving wonderfully with his classic Apollo Sound combo, with a sound that was easily one of the sharpest on the New York Latin scene of the 70s! The group features piano by Ray Coen, and some nice tenor and flute work from Freddie Miranda – whose reed touches add a nice degree of soul to the record, and offset the vocals of Piro Mantill and Frankie Calderon. Arrangements are by Coen, Elias Lopes, and Mario Ortiz – and overall the album's a crackler that's remained one of the best in Roena's classic catalog. Titles include "Hagan Silencio", "Se Pone Bueno", "El Traqueteo", "Yo Soy Chambelon", and "Soy El Terror". CD

✨✧ Patty WatersEvening In Houston ... CD
Clean Feed, 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
A recent evening in Houston from one of the most revolutionary voices in jazz – the legendary Patty Waters, best known for her ESP recordings in the 60s – making a great return to form in more recent years! Waters works here with a group that's maybe as equally legendary as she is – Burton Greene on piano, Barry Altschul on drums, and Mario Pavone on bass – kind of an inversion of the usual energy of a jazz trio accompanying a singer, which is perfect for the way that Waters completely breaks open the form of vocal jazz! Most titles here are familiar, but done in really unique, mindblowingly personal versions – in a lineup that includes "Loverman", "Moon Don't Come Up Tonight", "You're My Thrill", "Lonely Woman", "Strange Fruit", "I Loves You Porgy", and "Off Minor". ✨✧ Tony WilliamsLive Tokyo 1978 ... CD
Hi Hat, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Fully-electrified work from legendary drummer Tony Williams – every bit as searing as you might expect, given that the date features Brian Auger on keyboards and Ronnie Montrose on guitar! The rockish leanings of both of those musicians get plenty of space here, as does the basswork of Mario Cipollina – and the tunes are in the best rock fusion territory of some of Williams' famous studio albums from a few years before – but also maybe have a more spacious quality here in a live setting! The recording quality is strong – the program was originally produced for Japan's NHK Radio – and titles include "There Comes A Time", "Red Alert", "Dragon Song", "Open Fire", "Heads Up", "Tropic Of Capricorn", "Rocky Road", and even a drum solo from Tony! Hardly the chillout set you might expect from the cover – no beachy cliches at all – and instead, a killer batch of underground soul and club tracks, put together in a way that really represents some of the most exciting musical growth of the past few years! There's a classic sound at the core, but all of these tracks are definitely contemporary too – breaking out with a fresh approach to rhythms and production, while still holding onto a really old school love of strong vocals and live instrumentation too! Tracks include "This Is What You Are (Opolopo rmx)" by Mario Biondi, "Girl U Need A Change Of Mind" by IG Culture, "Far Away (Layabouts voc mix)" by Lady Alma, "Tribe 3 (edit)" by Rhythm Of Elements, "The Great I Am" by Muzart, "Saat Itu Juga (vox version)" by Andezzz, "Changes (Lanu ext mix)" by Kylie Auldist, "Take It Higher" by Taliwa, "Little Sunflower" by Jazz Invaders with Lonnie Smith, and "From Here On" by Diplomats Of Soul.
