Mario Biondi looks a bit angelic on the cover, but his vocals are still nicely down to earth – that wonderfully raspy charm that made us love his music right from the start, and which makes Mario one of the key folks to carry forward the legacy of older jazz singers like Mark Murphy or Mose Allison! Part of that legacy is heard here in remakes of classic Blue Note tunes – but there's also plenty of Biondi's own touches as well – partly in the original songs he brings to the date, but also in the work with Italian groups like the High Five Quintet and Fabrizio Bosso Spiritual Jazz Trio – not to mention his own group, led by keyboardist Massimo Greco – and work on two tracks by Incognito too! The book might have a lofty goal, but it's a great one too – and is illustrated here with a big range of full color photographs from the cities that get the attention of the authors! The book has sections on New Orleans, Detroit, Port Au Prince, Belfast, Hiroshima, and Kigali – each presented with full color photographs of both musicians and the scene, plus some cityscapes as well – next to interviews with local artists and creative figures – all very well done, without the kind of "soft gloss" approach that some projects of this nature might engage! The photographs of Detroit are especially dear to our heart, and really get at the nature of the city that we love and experience when we shop for records – and the book is hardcover, full color, and 188 pages in length. A wonderful look at a lost, secret side of the house music scene in Chicago – rare flyers and posters that were used to draw people into the sort of underground events that really helped the music blossom in the Windy City – maybe the only lasting document of musical moments that built up together to shape the sound of the global club scene well into the 21st century! This third volume is every bit as cool as the previous one – filled with page after page of full-color reproductions of the sorts of things that formed a special network for fans of house music back in the day – a pre-internet way to find out about all the secret spots that were really helping grow the music. There's also a bit of an introduction in the front, and a few images of playlists from WBMX, the big house station – and one from Loop Records, another important spot. We lived through these years in our city – and the book does a fantastic job of sharing the magic of the early years of house with the rest of the world! Book

Very gripping music for this early 70s Italian TV thriller – scored with a wonderfully offbeat style by Mario Migliardi! Some tracks are sweet and breezy, while others are extremely dark – some of the darkest we've heard in Italian film score work of the time! These cuts have some very unique orchestrations – and often echo a 20th century classical mode at points, sometimes with a bit of electronics – but in ways that are quite different from the atonal 70s sounds of Morricone – much more dramatic, and filled with sharp notes and fast changes – instrumentation that bursts out with an almost improvisational quality at points. The mellower tracks stand out even more strongly than usual amidst this avant instrumentation – but they only underscore the overall darkness of the soundtrack by their presence. Edda Dell'Orso and I Cantori Moderni do a bit of singing on the record – but most cuts are instrumental, and the reissue features a total of 24 tracks in all. CD

An album that really takes the "beat" in its title seriously – as the set's got plenty of heavy drums, right from the start – and at a level that's very different than the usual Italian sound library set of the time! The vibe is more rock than jazz or easy – and the heavy drums are topped by guitar turned up with plenty of fuzz – almost a psych take on the "shake" or "jerk" modes of the European instrumental scene of the late 60s – but with some funky currents in the rhythms that would be right at home in Memphis soul too! A great little score for a well-titled movie – given that Scent Of Mystery was the very first film ever issued in "Smell-O-Vision"! The film's big theatrical gimmick was that screenings were accompanied by a variety of odors to match the action or setting on the screen – but apart from that nose-centrist reading of the movie, we're much more appreciative of Mario Nascimbene's soundtrack music, which is an even greater delight for the ears! Mario's probably best known for later Italian scores, yet this effort has a very similar feel – lots of playful melodies and jazz-styled themes that would be right at home in a Fellini flick – especially given the way that Nascimbene sometimes adds a bit of drama, then drops it out in favor of the groovier elements at play. Titles include "The Chase", "Pamplona Stomp", "The Shadow Turns", "Gaudix Guitar", "Diana Dors Blues", "Organ Accident", "Butterfly", and "Party Guitar". Rusca works here with his core trio – Lucio Terzano on bass and Tony Arco on drums – and on three of the album's tracks, the trio stands alone – great enough together, although the presence of Rava makes things especially nice on the remaining tracks – and Enrico blows in a way that's very different than some of his other late 90s material. The first record we've heard in years from Italian pianist Mario Rusca – and a set that really lives up to the strength of all of his classic material from back in the day! The album's a beautifully recorded set – done in mono, which seems to bring an even richer quality to the sound of the piano in the hands of Rusca – deep, round tones that ring out beautifully in a set that's heavy on original compositions – and which features work from Riccardo Fioravanti on bass and Tony Arco on drums. The spirit of the record is like one of those lost Italian jazz treasures from the 60s – the kind of record would normally change hands for hundreds of dollars – and the double-length set is overflowing with gems – on titles that include "Monocrhome Blues", "Double Horn", "Tempo Blues", "Blue Dream", and versions of "Infant Eyes", "Blues For Gwen", "Blues Walk", "Blue Minor", "Rachid", and "Bass Blues". One of the most important Italian rock albums of the late 60s – even though it's a set that was virtually lost at the time! In some way, the set's a bit like the first album by The Velvet Underground – in that it was presented by an underground artist, Mario Schifano – and features really weird and wild music that was years ahead of its time – and, like the first album by the Velvets, the set sold very little upon release, but has become the stuff of legend over the years! There's a wonderfully freaky vibe to the whole thing – some freewheeling jams with lots of heavy guitar next to earthy percussion, odd organ lines, piano, and even a bit of flute – all topped with vocals that are mostly in the farther reaches, save for one cut that has a female singer sounding a bit more straightforward. Tracks include the side-long "Le Ultime Parole Di Brandimante" – plus "E Dopo", "Intervallo", "Molto Lontano", and "Susan Song". LP, Vinyl record album

There's a heck of a lot going on here – definitely plenty of the acoustic guitar pictured on the cover, but often used with sensitivity that's more Brazilian than you'd expect – and interspersed with tracks that have other instrumentation in the lead, including balafon – sometimes spare instrumentals, sometimes vocal numbers – mostly acoustic, but with a few electric elements from time to time. The music has both a complexity and really organic mixing of modes – maybe a bit like some of the global experiments that you might have found on the Crammed label at the time, but also very unique to Mario himself too. The approach is extremely resonant – really bringing the players sensibilities together wonderfully, and making for a record that's almost warmer than other Braxton dates of this nature – especially when Anthony plays it a little straight on the album's readings of "I Remember You" and "Stablemates". Really great music for one of the trippiest westerns ever recorded during the spaghetti generation – served up here with instrumentation that often has a lot more psychedelic touches than other western scores of the time! Mario Migliardi didn't do that much soundtrack work in the period, but he really knocks it out of the park with this one – using fuzz guitar, sound effects, and all sorts of weird ways of recording familiar instruments, thanks to the "Leslie effect" – which creates this insane sense of mood and moment, but all with qualities that are so different than you might find in the music of Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai! It's a bit hard to describe the genius of the record in words, but it's there from the very first note, and just gets better and better – as the set moves through almost 80 minutes of music over the course of 21 tracks. Two albums from tenorist Junior Cook! Good Cookin' has 6 tracks with Walter Booker on bass, Al Dailey on piano, Slide Hampton on trombone, Bill Hardman on trumpet and flugelhorn, Mario Rivera on baritone sax, and Leroy Williams on drums. Somethin's Cookin' is a nice little cooker from Junior – with no pun on the artist or title intended! The album's one of Cook's few sets as a leader, and arguably has an even better focus than most of the rest – thanks to strong production from Cedar Walton, who's also backing Junior for the record with his trio of Billy Higgins on drums and Buster Williams on bass. The groove is nice and fluid – in the best Walton way that combines warmth with a sense of free-soaring energy – and Junior's solos seem a bit more hard-bitten than before, but still with that sense of lyrical warmth that he developed with Horace Silver. Titles include "Chi Chi", "Hindsight", "Heavy Blue", "Illusion Of Grandeur", "Fiesta Espanol", and "Detour Ahead". CD

The legendary Italian drummer Tullio De Piscopo is at his most dynamic here – effortlessly blending funky jazz, soul, and bits of prog – all at that level that soon made him a legend in the clubs! A HUGE batch of samba-soul grooves from Seu Jorge! Jorge previously knocked around Brazil as a member of the late 90s pop group Farofa Carioca, but his first solo outing is a massive step forward into the upper echelon of the Brazilian scene! Like the best of his contemporaries, Jorge uses the rich history of samba and bossa as a springboard – but it's the pronounced contemporary qualities, such as production and mix work by Beastie Boy producer Mario Caldato – that push Carolina way over the top and make it much more than a genre exercise! The title track echoes the earlier work of Jorge Ben, who actually pens the reggae-inflected tune "Em Nagoya Eu Vi Eriko", and the tracks "Mangueira" and "O Samba Tai" have the classic samba groove and crisp background vocals that would sound right in place on Tom Ze's Se O Caso E Chorar. Amazing early work from Azymuth – rare demo recordings done at the home studio of keyboardist Jose Roberto Bertrami, in the short space before the group issued their legendary debut! The tracks here are as much jazz funk as they are the later modes that Azymuth would put forth – killer instrumentals that are really driven by great keyboard lines from Bertrami, who'd already been making music in other formats for years – and who works here on Fender Rhodes, Arp, Clavinet, Hammond, and a range of other keyboards too! The drums are fantastic, too – handled by a young Ivan Conti, who gets help on percussion from an early fourth member of the group, Ariovaldo Contesini – and as you might guess, the incredible basslines of Ivan Mamao Conti really help the whole thing groove. A great Dizzy Gillespie Latin session recorded during the mid 70s – proof that he could still hold onto the cubop spirit of the old days! The session features a larger group arranged and conducted by Chico O'Farril – who manages to keep a solidly Cuban groove at the base, but really let Dizzy open up with some broader horn flourishes at the top. Given the quality of actual Cuban jazz at the time, this set may well beat most of what was going on in Havana – thanks to solid solos from Dizzy, and backings from a group led by Machito, and featuring players who include Mario Bauza, Jorge Dalto, Manny Duran, Mauricio Smith, and Victor Paz. Side one features the extended "Oro, Incienso y Mirra", and side two is a 3-part suite, "Three Afro-Cuban Jazz Moods". CD

2 different albums from Tito Puente – nicely packaged here in a single set! On Broadway is not really a "Broadway" album, as you might guess from the title – although Tito and group do play a version of the soul hit "On Broadway" on the set – but a nicely-honed set with a strong Latin jazz groove, much more back to basics than some of Tito's work from the 70s. Players include Ray Gonzales, Jorge Dalto, Afredo De La Fe, and Jerry Gonzales – and tracks include versions of Freddie Hubbard's "First Light", Milton Nascimento's "Soul Song", and Toots Thieleman's "Bluesette" – as well as the originals "Jo Je Ti" and "TP's Especial". Mambo Diablo is a stone cooker from Tito Puente's great back to basics years of the 80s – a time when he was really moving towards the Latin jazz of his roots – working without any singers, or any contemporary gimmicks, and letting loose with tight combos and top-line jazz players! This set features Puente on vibes, timbales, and percussion – grooving nicely with the great Sonny Bravo on piano, whose bold lines definitely help shape the grooves – giving them plenty of New York 60s pulse, alongside work by Jimmy Frisuara on trumpet and trombone, Mario Rivera on soprano and tenor, and Ray Gonzalez on trumpet. Bobby Rodriguez handles bass, and Johnny "Dandy" Rodriguez brings in added percussion with congalero Jose Madara – and tracks include "Take Five", "Mambo Diablo", "Pick Yourself Up", "Eastern Joy Dance", "China", and "No Pienses Asi".
