VariousPillows & Prayers – Cherry Red Records 1981 to 1983 (3CD set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
Cherry Red (UK), Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $21.99 50.99
An early 80s set from Cherry Red Records, and one that shows just how important the British label was to the world of post-punk music at the time – as you'll hear from an assortment of tracks that's more than enough to give labels like Factory or Rough Trade a run for their money! Cherry Red always had a way of thinking outside of the norm – mixing experimental sounds with more tuneful moments, and sometimes showcasing artists who weren't afraid to put their feelings on the line – at a level that other British indies would pick up more strongly a few years later. There's plenty of formative sounds here – and titles include "Plain Sailing" by Tracy Thorn, "My Face Is On Fire" by Felt, "No Noise" by Eyeless In Gaza, "Don't Blink" by The Nightingales, "Some Things Don't Matter" by Ben Watt, "Modi 2 (extract)" by Piero Milesi, "All About You" by Thomas Leer, "Portrait" by Five Or Six, "Eine Symphonie Des Grauens" by The Monochrome Set, "Lazy Ways" by The Marine Girls, "I Unseen" by The Misunderstood, and "On My Mind" by Everything But The Girl. This massive 3CD version of the collection is overflowing with great material – a whopping 72 tracks in all, 17 of which are unreleased, presented in a book-style package with plenty of notes! Added material includes work from The Nightingales, Kevin Coyne, The Passage, Monochrome Set, Jane, Five Or Six, Thomas Leer, Martyn Bates, Creation Rebel, The Reflections, Swallow Tongue, Bodhi Beat Poets, and even Patrick MacNee & Honor Blackman of The Avengers! ✨✧ Shop AssistantsShop Assistants (aka Will Anything Happen) ... CD
Overground (UK), 1986. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Three gals, one guy, and plenty of fuzz – the classic debut album from The Shop Assistants – one of our favorite groups from the mid 80s British scene! The quartet work in territory that's very close to the best that Creation Records had to offer at the time – a tight, jangly, 60s-inspired sense of rhythm and tunefulness – mixed with some Jesus & Mary Chain-ish fuzz on the guitars – all driven by tight, simple drumming that really sends the tunes home! Vocals are slightly sweet, in kind of a Marine Girls way – but are darkened nicely by the fuzz – and titles include "I Don't Wanna Be Friends With You", "Fixed Grin", "Somewhere In China", "All That Ever Mattered", "Home Again", "All Of The Time", and "What A Way To Die". ✨✧ Mrs MillerWild, Cool, & Swingin' ... CD
Capitol/Ultra Lounge, Late 60s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Argh! Take your ears off before listening to this one! Mrs. Miller was a weirdo singer who cut a few records on Capitol during the late 60s – and boy, can she NOT sing! The arrangements are completely groovy, though, and the strange mix of Miller's terrible voice with groovy Now Sound cuts has been the stuff of legend for years in the Incredibly Strange Music camp. Now, this cool (and official!) 21 track CD brings together some of her best moments (nearly all of which are not that swingin!) – including "The Girl From Ipanema", "Yellow Submarine", "Moon River", "Groovy Kind Of Love", "Monday, Monday", "Sweat Pea", "Downtown", and "Strangers In the Night". Imagine if the girls on Facts Of Life gave Mrs. Garrett 3 hits of acid – and you'll only get half the picture! CD
