Jan Ptasyn WroblewskiSlupy Milowe (with bonus tracks) ... CD
GAD (Poland), 1979/1980. New Copy ... $16.99 18.99
Never-issued material from Polish saxophonist Jan Ptasyn Wroblewski – material recorded at the end of the 70s for Polish Radio, done in a small combo mode that's a real back to basics change, after some of his larger projects of the decade! The setting is nice and lean – Jan on tenor, with guitar, bass, and drums – very much in the mode of an old Sonny Stitt session, with maybe some of the same production touches that Stitt was getting on his 70s records for Muse. Jan's great on both the ballads, which open up with a soulful vibe that's really beautiful – and the more swinging tunes, which are very much in a post-bop mode, and occasionally pick up some nice modal currents. The use of guitar by Marek Blizinski makes for some very different chromatic elements on the set – and titles include "Bebopem Go", "Slupy Milowe", "Rower Z Debu Czyli Dabrower", and "Czarna Chandra From Calcutta". CD features three bonus tracks – "Ciruka Z Rurki", "Dykteryka", and "Ugrysciorba". CD

✨✧ Wojtek MazolewskiWhen Angels Fall ... CD
Whirlwind (UK), 2020. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A really lovely tribute to the music of Krzysztof Komeda – the famous Polish jazz musician who also revolutionized the world of soundtracks, before leaving this planet all too soon! Komeda hasn't been around in decades, but his influence continue to shape new generations – and that's definitely the case here, as bassist Wojtek Mazolewski works with a group who definitely get all the original ideas in the compositions, but also find new, youthful energy for their expression – in a lineup that includes Oskar Torok on trumpet and electronics, Joanna Duda on Wurlitzer electric and grand piano, Marek Pospieszalski on tenor, and Qba Janicki on drums and percussion. Titles include "Le Depart", "When Angels Fall", "Roman II", "Sleep Safe & Warm", "Memory Of Bach", "Astigmatic", "Crazy Girl", and "Bariera". CD
