Marion BrownVista (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Impulse, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99 On March 14, 2025
A strangely wonderful album from Marion Brown – quite different from his other work on Impulse, with a mellow electric edge that gives it a warm and laidback feel! The approach here is much more soulful than before – with finely crafted tunes that weave Brown's work on alto with electric piano by Anthony Davis and Stanley Cowell, percussion by Ed Blackwell and Jimmy Hopps, and bass by Reggie Workman. If you're expecting the angrier Brown from earlier years, you'll be disappointed – but if you're ready to hear a Brown that's gently crafting mellow lines in a soulful setting, then you're in for a treat. Tracks include Cowell's "Maimoun", Stevie Wonder's "Visions", Brown's "Vista", "Moment of Truth", "Bismillah Rrahimani Rrahim", and "Djinji". LP, Vinyl record album
(Pressed at Third Man!) This item will not be delivered to you before Friday, March 14.

Piero UmilianiGuerra E Distruzione ... LP
Liuto/Holy Basil (Italy), Early 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $39.99 44.99
A really cool set from sound library genius Piero Umiliani – one that's definitely got the war and destruction promised in the title, but which also has some surprisingly groovy touches too! The vibe here is like some late 60s action film – with tense moments, darker passages, and some nicely jazzy currents underneath – almost like some classic spy soundtrack, spread out over the course of a double length record – which is quite unusual for sound library recordings! Umiliani conducts the group – and titles include "Ostinato Marziale", "Ex Deportati", "Dopo La Battaglia", "Repressione", "Avvistamento", "Guerra Di Posizione", "Sentinella", and "Dinimica Militare". ✨✧ Gregg DiamondGregg Diamond's Star Cruiser (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. Used ... Out Of Stock
Gregg Diamond takes his Bionic Boogie sound to a different level – soaring to the skies with a leaner disco groove than before – almost hinting at the coming 80s groove in the process! The rhythms are nice and tight, and often augmented by keyboards that sweeten things up – never overwhelming the overall groove, but packing things in with a mighty nice punch – one that lets the vocals on the record really explode! Most numbers have a chorus singing the spare lyrics – but Diva Gray and Gordon Grody each sing lead on a track each, then give the rest of the record to a backup group that also includes Jocelyn Brown. Our favorite track may well be "Holding Back", which snaps along in a great funky dancefloor groove with some old Bionic Boogie elements – and other cuts include "Arista Vista", "Bring Back Your Love", "Fancy Dancer", and "This Side Of Midnight". ✨✧ Nino Rota & OthersFellini Masterpieces (3CD set) ... CD
El (UK), 1950s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... Out Of Stock
A full range of music from the film career of director Federico Fellini – a package that features a few key soundtracks from frequent collaborator Nino Rota – plus other music that really shows the evolving style of Fellini over the years! The set is heavy on key Rota scores of the 50s and 60s – including Nights Of Cabiria, La Dolce Vita, 8 1/2, and La Strada – all music that has this fantastic blend of larger orchestrations and lighter melody – a perfect sonic reflection of the way that Fellini himself was playing with conventions of narrative while also commenting on the form! The set also features work by lesser Fellini soundtrack composers, plus some surprising use of classical themes – with selections from Variety Lights, Il Bidone, I Vitelloni, Toby Dammit, Amarcord, And The Ship Sails On, and Intervista. 3CDs in all – and a heck of a lot of music! ✨✧ Tom ZeCorreio Da Estaco Do Bras (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Continental/Polysom (Brazil), 1978. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the key records that helped cement the Tom Ze legacy back in the day – a set that's unlike any other work of the period from other Brazilian artists – including some of Ze's earlier contemporaries in the Tropicalia scene! There's a great mix of styles going on ranging from some spare percussive tracks, to others that have a smoother production style – and throughout it all, Ze's got that crazy approach to lyricism that marks his vocally striking work from this time. Arrangements are directed by Otavio Basso, with lots of work on both acoustic and electric instruments – keyboards mixed with cavaquinho, guitar mixed with percussion and cuica – on titles that include "Amor De Estrada", "Carta", "Morena", "Menina Jesus", "Na Parada De Sucesso", and "Pecado Rifa E Revista". ✨✧ Buena Vista Social ClubBuena Vista Social Club ... CD
World Circuit/Nonesuch (UK), 1997. Used ... Out Of Stock
A contemporary legend in Latin music – one that was done in collaboration with the film of the same name – organized by Ry Cooder, directed by Wim Wenders, and put forth as a reminder to America that Cuban culture was still going strong, even decades after we turned our backs on the nation! The "social club" in the title is well-put – as there's a relaxed, easygoing approach to the music here – warmly collaborative efforts from some of the greats of the scene in Havana – many of whom were able to enjoy renewed global attention, thanks to the efforts of the record and film. The lineup features Ruben Gonzalez on piano, Eliades Ochoa on guitar, Cachaito on bass, and Guajiro on trumpet – plus famous vocal contributions from Ibrahim Ferrer, Compay Segundo, and Omara Portuondo. Titles include "Chan Chan", "Dos Gardenias", "El Carretero", "Candela", "Viente Anos", "El Cuarto De Tula", "De Camino A La Vereda", "Murmullo", and "Orgullecida". CD

Soul Jazz (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3LPs ... $42.99 44.99
Forget any cliches you might have in mind about Cuban music – that idea that all the "old guys" of the Buena Vista Social Club were responsible for most of the sounds of Havana – because here, you'll hear amazing sounds from the younger generation – an amazing array of talents who were really transforming the scene in the 70s and early 80s! Sure, there's some familiar elements here – many of the artists start with older Afro Cuban roots – but the music also really takes off with all sorts of weird and wonderful touches – bits of funk, soul, jazz, and even some electronics – used in really compelling ways that definitely live up to the "experiments" in the title, but continue to provide the sort of groove you'd imagine from Cuban music. We loved the previous volume in this series, and we might well say that the second one is even better – with a stunning set list of tracks that includes "El 456" by Los Brito, "Luces En La Pista" by Raul Gomez, "Tema De El Rancheador De La Naturaleza" by Leo Brouwer, "Y Que Bien" by Juan Pablo Torres, "Quemando" by Los Latinos, "Muevete Con Las Fuerzas Del Corazon" by FA 5, "Amame Y No Piensas Mas" by Farah Maria, "La Rumba" by Luis Carbonell "Llegue Llegue" by Juan Formel & Los Van Van, "Para Que Niegas" by Los Papines, "Baila Mi Guaguanco" by Grupo Raices Nuevas, "Como Arrulos De Palma" by Tambores De Enrique Bonne, "Expreso Ritmico" by Ricardo Eddy Martinez, and "Aqui Estamos" by Grupo Sintesis. ✨✧ CachaoMaster Sessions Vol 1 ... CD
Cresent Moon/Epic, 1994. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great return to form for the legendary Cachao – and a session that seeks to recapture the Cuban Jam Session energy of his recordings from a few decades before! Production is by Andy Garcia, and is somewhat more sentimental than in the old days – although certainly still free from any sort of Buena Vista Social Club cliches that would come in later years – and overall, the lineup of players stays nicely faithful to the classic 60s sound, but perhaps expands it with a bit more fullness. Cachao is on bass and a bit of vocals – and other artists include Francisco Aguabella on percussion, Justo Almario on tenor, Chocolate Amenteros on trumpet, Paquito D'Rivera on clarinet, and Nestor Torres on flute. Titles on this first volume include "Mi Guajira", "Lindo Yambu", "Mambo", "Isora Club", "Al Fin Te Vi", "Cachao's Guiro", and "Descarga Cachao". CD

✨✧ Killer MikeMichael (gold vinyl pressing) ... LP
Loma Vista, 2023. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Maybe the most powerful, personal album that Killer Mike ever recorded – a set that took many years to put together, and which definitely represents the journey the rapper was experiencing at the time! Mike channels some of his own experience to deal with the larger issues that are facing so many black Americans in recent years – and while some of his resolutions are definitely his own, they are delivered with a sense of power that certainly resonates at a much larger level too! Production includes some great work from No ID, plus Cool & Dre, Twhy Xclusive, and Little Shalimar – and the album has features from Ty Dolla Sign, Andre 3000, Jagged Edge, and El-P. Titles include "Motherless", "Something For Junkies", "Exit 9", "Two Days", "Spaceship Views", "Slummer", "High & Holy", "Don't Let The Devil", "Down By Law", and "Shed Tears". LP, Vinyl record album
