Leonard CohenSongs Of Love & Hate (50th anniversary edition – 180 gram white vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Columbia, 1971. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
One of the more heavily brooding albums ever cut by Leonard Cohen – and also one of the best – the iconic Songs Of Love And Hate from 1971! Cohen's aptly titled third LP, with the nice spare approach to production that most of his early work had, even more stripped down, with voice and acoustic guitar the focus, and some tasteful, more lush texture when the mood strikes – and oh so incredible wordplay and phrasing from the iconic maverick poet/songwriter. Classic bummers including "Avalanche", "Last Year's Man", "Dress Rehearsal Rag", "Diamonds In The Mine", "Love Calls You By Your Name", "Famous Blue Raincoat", "Sing Another Song, Boys" and "Joan Of Arc". Jackson Conti (Madlib & Mamao)Sujinho (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Madlib Invazion, 2008. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
Great grooves from Jackson Conti – not a dude, but a duo – one that features Madlib teamed with Mamao, drummer from the legendary Azymuth! The album's got a really unique feel – one that mixes Madlib's chunky, fuzzy style of production with some of the cleaner, jazzier Azymuth grooves of late – a combination that shouldn't work so well, but which comes across with really amazing results! There's a bit of beats on the set, but a fair bit of the percussion is acoustic too – making for more warmth than before from Madlib – almost a transplantation of the Yesterday's New Quintet sound to the sunnier Rio scene. Keyboards have a strong role too – often with the sort of edgey, compelling tones you'd hear on the first few Azymuth recordings of the 70s – and other instrumentation includes bits of guitar, flute, sax, and other well-placed touches – but all used in weird ways that are somewhere between typical jazz and Brazilian modes. Titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Xibaba", "Sao Paulo Nights", "Brasilian Sugar", "Mamaoism", "Berumba", "Papaya", "Segura Esta Onda", "Sunset At Sujinho", "Tijuca Man", and "Waiting On The Corner". RCA, Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
The LP that followed up Barry's classic pop folk track "Eve Of Destruction". The track still sends a shiver up our spines – probably more because we've seen it used in a million documentaries, than because of any actual power in the song. Still, it's a darn groovy track, and the LP has a number of other nice ones written by P.F. Sloan, including "Mr. Man On The Street (act 1)", "What's Exactly the Matter With Me", and "The Sins Of A Family". (Note: This item is not for sale online until 7:00am on Saturday, November 27. Atlantic/Real Gone, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... On November 26, 2021
Dusty Springfield on Atlantic Records – a match made in heaven, and one that's presented here perfectly in a batch of two dozen tracks that are all served up in their original mono mixes for 45rpm seven inch singles! Dusty had already been one of the most soulful singers on the UK scene in the 60s – and her Philips recordings are real favorites of ours – but when she moved to Atlantic, the label gave her some key soul-based backings – in Memphis, Philly, and Muscle Shoals – plus some great New York sessions too. Only eight of these mono versions have ever been on CD before – and the whole thing's presented with great sound and notes on this key period in Dusty's career – alongside tracks that include "Silly Silly Fool", "Brand New Me", "Bad Case Of The Blues", "That Old Sweet Roll", "Willie & Laura Mae Jones", "Haunted", "What Do You Do When Love Dies", "Son Of A Preacher Man", "Just A Little Lovin", "Breakfast In Bed", "I Don't Want To Hear It Anymore", "So Much Love", "What Good Is I Love You", and "Nothing Is Forever". Tammi TerrellIrresistible (180 gram yellow vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Motown, 1968. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
An irresistible solo album from the great Tammi Terrell – the Motown singer who's best remembered for her duets with Marvin Gaye, and who hardly ever got a chance to work on her own! Despite that lack, though, this album's a standout classic – a slightly different take on the female Motown sound of the 60s, with production by Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol – in a vibe that's maybe just hinting a bit at the sound to come – which makes us wonder how much Terrell would have given us in the 70s, if she hadn't passed from this planet all too soon! Titles include cuts by Smokey Robinson, Johnny Bristol, and Fuqua himself – with tracks that include "I Can't Believe You Love Me", "Come On And See Me", "What A Good Man He Is", "He's The One I Love", and "Can't Stop Now (Love Is Calling)". VariousLife Aquatic – Original Soundtrack (blue vinyl pressing) (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Hollywood, 2004. New Copy 2LP ... On November 26, 2021
The soundtrack to the second most underrated of Wes Anderson's films – the strangely wonderful seafaring adventure the Life Aquatic! The heart of the album is the delicate, beautiful solo acoustic covers of David Bowie tunes by Brazil's Seu Jorge – plus some great synth and symph scoring by Devo's Mark Mothersbaugh. Seu commandeers "Rebel Rebel", "Life On Mars", "Starman" and "Five Years" – his gruff, but sweet vocals crooning mostly in Portugese, while Bowie's instantly identifiable melodies easily float to the surface. Mothersbaugh's soundtrack compositions get better and more extroverted with each project, this one branching off from the faux stuffy baroque touches he spun so wonderfully on Rushmore and the Royal Tennenbaums, and even cooking up some blunt, old school synthesizer noisiness that'll please the Spuds! This being a Wes Anderson film, there's some leftfield hits and pop oddities, too. 20 tracks in all, including score pieces, the Jorge/Bowie tunes, plus "Shark Attack Theme" and more by Sven Libaek, "La Nina De Puerta Oscura" by Paco De Lucia, "Search And Destroy" by Iggy & The Stooges, "30 Century Man" by Scott Walker, "Gut Feeling" by Devo and more. As was the case with Anderson's Bottlerocket, the film's critics will slowly shrink into silence over the next few years and the Life Aquatic will be very fondly remembered. Imperial/Blue Note, 1956. Used 2 CDs ... $14.99
Fantastic work from one of the most overlooked alto talents of all-time! This beautiful CD features tracks from Sonny's 3 rare albums on Imperial – Jazz USA, Go Man, and Plays Cole Porter. The records were all recorded in 1956 – and they feature some of the strongest bop playing to ever come out of LA, total proof that that city wasn't always noodling around with cool jazz during the 50s! Sonny plays alto so well you want to cry – and every note is perfectly placed, with just the right mix of technical skill and warm soulful humanity. Most of this material has only ever been reissued in Japan – and the CD includes wealth of excellent cuts like "If I Had You", "I Love You", "Wailin With Joe", "West Coast Blues", "Criss Cross", "Ham's Blues", and "Blue Friday" – but the whole thing's great! VariousNight Comes Down – 60s British Mod, R&B, Freakbeat, & Swinging London Nuggets (3CD set) ... CD
RPM (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $26.99 30.99 About December 5, 2021
The British mod scene of the 60s was drinking up a very heady brew of American jazz, soul, and R&B – then doing a great job of turning it into their own sort of music, as you'll hear on this set! Most of the numbers here are English, but could easily go head-to-head with the most romping tunes on American jukeboxes at the time – particularly the soulful sort of grooves that were flowing out of northern cities like Detroit, Chicago, and New York! Yet there's also something special going on here, too – as the groups aren't just slavishly soulful, but also taking some chances, too – really starting to open up their sound, but not at the level from the more progressive years – just finding the right sort of inspiration, then getting confident enough to give things their own spin. The set list is amazing – very much on a par with the other superb 3CD collections of this nature from RPM – and titles include "Work Song" by James Royal, "Night Comes Down" by Mickey Finn, "What's Her Name" by Guy Darnell, "My Love" by Ronnie Jones, "Taboo Man" by Alexis Kroner, "Mama" by Litz Roza, "Don't That Beat Them All" by Just Five, "Fire In The City" by The Deviants, "Violin Shop" by The Alan Bown, "Elevator" by Grapefruit, "Peacock Dress" by Sun Dragon, "The Eagle Flies On Friday" by The Exceptions, "Girl On A Motorcycle" by British Lion Orchestra, and lots lots more! 87 tracks in all. A spectacular soul album from Holland – but one that's got a much more American groove than some other overseas records of its type! The cuts all feel as if they could have been lifted from indie sides of the east coast scene of the early 70s – and Billy shines beautifully both on the mellow ballads and uptempo numbers – the former of which have a sweet soul/harmony vibe, the latter of which take things into fast funk territory of the pre-disco years! The whole thing's great – a beautiful balance between funky groovers and laidback soul – and titles include "Funky Monkey Monkey", "Thank You", "Save All My Lovin", "Feelin Good", "All My Brothers Are Clean", "Love Is Gonna Rain On You", "Look Out Baby Here I Come", and "Message From A Black Man". A classic early album from Charlie Parker on Verve – and one that may well support one of the strangest cover illustrations ever done by the great David Stone Martin! The image of a bird-headed Parker blowing alto is more than compelling enough – but inside, the music is even better – pulled from a variety of different early Parker sessions for Norman Granz – showing some of the real early strengths of his sound! Titles include group material with quartet material with Miles Davis on trumpet, Walter Bishop on piano, and Max Roach on drums – on the titles "Au Privave", "Why Do I Love You", "KC Blues", "She Rote", and "Star Eyes". There's also two great tracks with larger arrangements by Gil Evans and voices by Dave Lambert – "Old Folks" and "In The Still Of The Night" – and a few more with trumpeter Red Rodney and pianist John Lewis – "Blues For Alice", "Lover Man", and "Si Si". David Clayton ThomasDavid Clayton Thomas/Tequila Sunrise/David Clayton Thomas (with bonus track) ... CD
BGO (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
A trio of solo albums from David Clayton Thomas – packaged here with a bonus track too! First up is the self-titled Columbia set David Clayton Thomas – great early solo work the singer who'd rose to fame as part of Blood Sweat & Tears – stepping out here with a sound that's maybe even more soul-based than his music with that famous group! The set features production from Bobby Colomby, of BS&T – and the groove is somewhat similar, but with less horns, and a lot more riffing guitar, keyboards, and other elements used to bring out some of the funkier currents in David's vocals! A few tracks were recorded in Memphis, with guitar from Steve Cropper – and the record even features some arrangements from Claus Ogerman and Jimmy Giuffre. The set includes a remake of of "Magnificent Sanctuary Band" – with a break at the start that's as funky as the original – and other titles include "We're All Meat From The Same Bone", "Sing A Song", "Don't Let It Bring You Down", "Once Burned", "Stealin In The Name Of The Lord", and a surprisingly great take on the Gram Parsons tune "She". Next is Tequila Sunrise – a fantastic solo album from David Clayton Thomas – and a set that still retains the amazing vocals he brought to Blood Sweat & Tears, but which has a completely different focus overall! Clayton-Thomas wrote almost all the songs on the set – and he works here with a tight core group that features William Smitty Smith on keyboards and arrangements, and plenty of guitar from Danny Kortchmar – both musicians who give the whole record a very strong, tight vibe that makes the whole thing feel like it comes from some hip early 70s group. Titles include "Friday The 13th Child", "My Song", "Last Time That She Cried", "The Face Of Man", "Nobody Calls Me Prophet", and "Fallin By Degrees". Next up is another self-titled album – David Clayton Thomas, from 1973 – with David himself handling arrangements, and doing a mighty nice job – getting plenty of sweet keyboards from William D Smith, and strong lead guitar from Domenic Troiano – both of whom echo the funky rock currents in the music. There's a bit of a Memphis rock vibe to the record at times – and titles include "Small Family", "Professor Longhair", "Harbor Lady", "Harmony Junction", and "When Something Is Wrong With My Baby". CD also features the bonus track "Some Hearts Get All The Breaks". CD

Not the first album ever cut by Willie Nelson – despite the title – but an excellent showcase for his early talents on RCA! The album's a lot more understated than some of Willie's later work, but it's completely charming all the way through – filled with superb songs that really showcase Nelson's ear for both melancholy and blues, of the sort that made some of his early compositions so important for Patsy Cline, Ray Price, and other singers. There's plenty of gems here that you might miss otherwise – and titles include "Make Way For A Better Man", "Some Other World", "Teach Me To Forget", "A Mansion On The Hill", "One In A Row", and "You Made Me Live, Love, & Die". Reel To Real, 1971. New Copy Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from tenorist George Coleman – featured here in the sort of setting that really reminds us of his genius when allowed to really open up and blow! The tracks are long, and the material was recorded by the Left Bank Jazz Society – that Baltimore-based organization that's managed to capture important (and excellent) sessions over the years, including classics from Lee Morgan and Wynton Kelly. Coleman was on one of the Kelly dates, but is even better here as a leader – and works with an unusual group that includes Danny Moore on trumpet, Albert Dailey on piano, Larry Ridley on bass, and Harold White on drums – with nice use of trumpet that keeps the record from being very different than just a live date from a tenorist with rhythm section. A fantastic early solo project from guitarist Roy Buchanan – recorded for Polydor at the start of the 70s, but never issued at the time! We're not sure why the label slept on the set, as it's a searing little killer right from the start – done in a gritty mode that's far hipper than some of the other blues rock of the period – never that cliched, with some swampy elements, a few funky touches, and a strong hint of the farther-reaching modes that Buchanan would hit in later years. Roy sings, as does a young Charlie Daniels, who plays second guitar and also wrote many of the tracks – and the set also features some vocals from Joe DiGregorio, and keyboards from Bob Wilson. Titles include "Humbug Down On The River", "Billy Joe Young", "The Story Of Isaac", "Black Autumn", "Funky Junky", "There'll Always Be", "I Desire You", and "Pain". 2CD set also features a March 1971 session, and bonus tracks too – with titles that include "Roy's Bluz", "Shotgun", "Dual Soliloquy", "CC Rider (live)", "Down By The River (live)", "After Hours/The Messiah Will Come Again", and "Sweet Dreams". A beautiful live representation of the energy of the Bitches Brew years – one that has Miles Davis and the group really letting loose with free-flowing, modally-inspired lines – cooking up an incredible blend of acoustic and electric sounds at once! There's a bit of funk here, but not much – and although guitar is sometimes used strongly, it's often not as noisy as in later live sides. One of the best heavy metal albums of all time! Ronnie James Dio had long been hailed for having some of the finest vocal chords in hard rock before this first Dio album arrived – having led the the obscure but beloved Elf, Rainbow and Black Sabbath in the 70s and earlier 80s – but it's Holy Diver that cements his legend. These days, it's kind of stunning how much he transcends metal cliche, as opposed to wallowing in it. Holy Diver has killer songs, Ronnie's unrivaled vocals and melodies, and the band focuses on crunching riffs instead of silly guitar solos and other elements that overwrought and badly dated so many other metal bands of the era. Includes "Stand Up & Shout", the eternal classics "Holy Diver" and "Rainbow In The Dark", "Gypsy", "Caught In The Middle", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Straight Through The Heart", "Invisible" and "Shame On The Night". There's a bit more bite here than on some of Jim's other records – a harder-edged, bluesier way of hitting the guitar that's almost much more Kenny Burrell than the usual sound from Hall – although Jim still manages a nice nimble touch at times too. Motown, 1970. New Copy (reissue)... On November 26, 2021
A seminal step forward for this legendary group – easily one of the greatest albums they ever cut! With ABC, the Jacksons are expanding their sound with the club-oriented grooves of the time – using Holland, Dozier, and Holland on many cuts, trying for a similar soaring groove as some of the trio's work on their own Invictus label. The move's actually a great one – as the maturing group has a strong adult harmony sound, the one that they would lean on more heavily during their years as The Jacksons, and which calls for much smoother arrangements than before. The record's got a surprisingly righteous, joyous sort of sound – and titles include "The Love You Save", "ABC", "One More Chance", "Never Had A Dream Come True", "I'll Bet You", "I Found That Girl", "La-La Means I Love You", "2-4-6-8", and "The You Folks". The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento. Danny Dee (Lil Albert)Movin In ... LP
Silver Cloud/P-Vine (Japan), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $36.99
A sweet mellow stepper from Danny Dee, aka Lil Albert – a singer who first got things going in the Hawaiian group Society Of Seven – but who hits some completely different, completely great territory here! The set was recorded in mid 70s LA, with arrangement and production by Ernie Freeman – and Albert's got backing from some of the cream of that scene's studio musicians, who bring some great jazzy touches to the music! There's definitely an ear here towards an AOR approach, but the result is more like the best indie mellow soul of the period – well-produced, but never overdone – nicely understated, in a way that makes the lead vocals sound completely sublime. Titles include "My Girl Friday", "Movin In", "Daydreamin", "Outrageous", "River Of Steel", "Loose Woman", and "Roads". LP, Vinyl record album

Bill EvansEverybody Still Digs Bill Evans (5CD box set) ... CD
Craft, Late 50s/1960s/1970s. New Copy 5CD ... $62.99 69.99
Bill Evans has been off the planet for decades now, but he's definitely still dug by most folks – one of the greatest jazz pianists of all time, and an artist whose sound is still a huge inspiration to many! This package does a great job of gathering together Bill's legacy, and advancing it too – as the set features the unissued live concert from 1975 that has also been released as On A Friday Evening – plus four more CDs' worth of music from the full range of his recording career from 1956 to 1980. Bill even plays a bit of electric piano at times – and other artists include Cannonball Adderley on alto, Zoot Sims and Harold Land on tenor, Eddie Gomez and Sam Jones on bass, Paul Motian and Jack DeJohnette on drums, Jim Hall on guitar, and Tony Bennett on vocals. The whole thing comes in a very cool hardcover book-style package, with lots of notes and rare photos – and in addition to the 9 tracks on the On A Friday Evening CD, the set features 52 more from vintage releases – a total of 61 tracks in all! GenesisFoxtrot ... LP
Charisma, 1972. Near Mint- ... $24.99
A fantastic classic from Genesis – a record that really has the early version of the group at their height – able to spin out longform instrumental passages that would go onto shape a generation of proggers who tried to copy their sound – amidst lyrical moments that really have Peter Gabriel hitting his imaginative stride! The set's worth it alone for the amazing side-length "Supper's Ready" – a track so trippy, it's completely different than the Phil Collins-led era of Genesis – and the record features so many other great moments – like the commentary on urban housing that is "Get Em Out By Friday", the soaring keyboard-driven "Watcher Of The Skies", and the majestic "Can Utility & The Coastliners". All that and one of the strangest covers of all time too! LP, Vinyl record album

Jay McShannBig Apple Bash ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... $6.99 11.98
A much groovier record than you might expect – hardly the older-styled jazz session normally associated with Jay McShann, and more of a wide-ranging session that brings in some great contemporary touches! The album's something of a celebration for Jay – and it features wonderful guest work from players who include Gerry Mulligan on baritone and soprano sax, Herbie Mann on flute and tenor sax, John Scofield on guitar, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, and Eddie Gomez on bass. A few tunes have an older Kansas City sort of swing, but others have a vamping groove that's really great – and these numbers really stand out in the set with some great solo moments. Titles include "Crazy Legs & Friday Strut", "Blue Feeling", "Jumpin The Blues", "Dickie's Dream", and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water". CD

Edsel (UK), 1980s. New Copy 2LP ... $86.99
A second great helping of hip British work from the 80s – all put together by British radio DJ Gary Crowley – whose work on Capitol Radio London kept him quite close to the action at the time! As with the first volume, this set does a great job of going past obvious chart hits, and pulling together some real gems from the time – not totally obscure tracks, as many of these numbers were issued on bigger labels – but very groovy tracks that show what a wealth of groundbreaking music was coming out in the years after punk! Gary really takes the "diverse and eclectic" in the title seriously – and serves up a set of tracks that include "Hey DJ (7" version)" by World's Famous Supreme Team, "Slang Teacher" by Wide Boy Awake, "Latin Music" by Kid Creole & The Coconuts, "As The Time Goes By" by Funkapolitan, "Jungle Music" by Rico & Special AKA, "I Don't Want To Live With Monkeys" by The Higsons, "I Know What Boys Like" by The Waitresses, "Torchlight" by Ellen Foley, "Blue" by Fine Young Cannibals, "Mick's Up" by Style Council, "Venceremos (7" version)" by Working Week, "Thinking About You" by Altered Images, "Window Shopping" by Friday Club, "Mellow Moods" by Pressure Point, and "The Secret Life Of Arabia" by BEF with Billy MacKenzie. VariousThat's The Way I Feel Right Now – A Tribute To Thelonious Monk ... LP
A&M, 1984. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold ... $5.99
A great little entry into a genre that got way too overdone and way too cluttered by the end of the 80s – but which was surprisingly fresh at the time of this initial release! The set pays tribute to the late Thelonious Monk, but does so by moving way past his modern jazz roots – and allowing for participation by a variety of artists in a number of different fields. Hal Willner masterminded the set, and does a great job of making unlike artists work well next to each other – really expanding on famous numbers by Monk, but never getting too goofy overall. Titles include "Functional" by Randy Weston, "Four In One" by Todd Rundgren & Gary Windo, "Thelonious" by Bruce Fowler, "Criss Cross" by Shockabilly, "In Walked Budd" by Terry Adams & Roswell Rudd, "Evidence" by Steve Lacy & Elvin Jones, "Ba-Lu-Bolivar-Ba-Lues-Are" by Was Not Was, "Ask Me Now" by Steve Lacy & Charlie Rouse, "Monk's Mood" by Sharon Freeman, "Round Midnight" by Joe Jackson, and "Friday The Thirteen" by Bobby McFerrin and Bob Dorough. There's plenty of other great Lacy work on the set too – and even if you're put off by the presence of non-jazzers on the set, the album's worth it alone for the Lacy tracks! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Thomas StronenLucus ... CD
ECM (Germany), 2018. Used ... Out Of Stock
Thomas Stronen's a drummer, but he gives plenty of space here to allow for a really strong combination of sounds from all the members of the quintet – a beautiful lineup that mixes piano with three stringed instruments, all given slight focus by the drums! The piano is handled by Ayumi Tanaka, whose got this really ringing tone on the instrument – open and spacious, but very conscious of color – which really works well alongside the violin of Hakon Aase, cello of Lucy Railton, and bass of Ole Morten Vagan – the last of whom we love from a series of previous recordings. The sound here is a bit difficult to describe in words, but it's got that special ECM space between standard jazz and contemporary composition – although without any sort of darkness at all. Titles include "Truth Grows Gradually", "La Bella", "Friday", "Islay", "Weekend", "Release", "Lucus", and "Baka". CD

Partisan, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $31.99
A nice little set from Bombino – recorded in Amsterdam, but heavy on the kind of fuzzy, freaky guitar work that have made the Tuareg group such an international hit in recent years! These guys wail mightily throughout – mixing pulsing rhythms with nicely freaky guitar lines – complex, but always down to earth – and proof that the legacy of Hendrix can travel to some very far-flung corners of the globe! Don CunninghamSomething For Everyone (180 gram pressing) (2020 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A strange little record – but one with some very groovy moments! The album is a rare relic from the St Louis scene of the early 60s – cut by the combo of Don Cunningham, the house act at that city's Playboy club at the time! Don borrows heavily from the styles of Martin Denny, Bobby Montez, Earl Grant, and Nat King Cole – but he also puts the work together with a jazzier edge than you'd expect, one that makes for more than a few really great moments that have made the album a treasure for groove hounds for years! The album sports a mad reading of "Quiet Village", one that has the band getting really crazy with percussion and birdcalls, hardly "quiet" at all! The real standout, though, is the group's cover of "Tabu" – done with a great percussion break on the intro, and a chugging Latin groove that's sure to burn up any dancefloor! Also great is the album's two Brazilian-tinged numbers – jazzy remakes of "Manha De Carnival" and "Samba De Orpheus" – both of which feature some great percussion! LP, Vinyl record album

Comb & Razor, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 28.98
Not the usual sort of Nigerian sounds you'd hear on a collection focused on Lagos – and instead, music that was recorded far from the central city of the nation – often with a much rootsier vibe overall! These tunes still have plenty of funk and jazz in the mix, but they often come across with a more freewheeling, collaborative vibe – as if you've stumbled upon a group jamming in some back alley spot, really enjoying each others' company while they create some magical music. The set is maybe the most thoughtful we've seen so far from the excellent Comb & Razor label – and titles include "Mbre Isong" by Isadico Dance Band Of Nigeria, "Akam Itoro Abasi" by Mansion, "Eyong Erong Uwa" by The Visitors, "Atak Mfat Eyen" by Sunny Risky & The Vitamin Explosion, "Akwa Idim" by Sea Lions, "Suk Usan Idang" by Charles Duke, "Akananwan Isong Idung" by Monica Isaac, and "Eseme Ikpong" by Chief Inyang Henshaw & His Top Ten Aces. George BensonOther Side Of Abbey Road ... LP
CTI/Friday Music, 1969. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99 35.99
A wonderfully wicked album – one that sold so many copies that it's sometimes hard to remember how great it is! George takes on all of Abbey Road – or just about all of it – as he runs through some of the most beautiful tracks The Beatles ever wrote, like "Golden Slumbers", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "The End", "Because", and "You Never Give Me Your Money". The whole thing's set to some great baroque jazzy arrangements by Don Sebesky, and George digs the whole thing so much that he even sings a bit – vocalizing in a cool chromatic way that really works well with his guitar playing, and which would soon transform into a very popular style on his records of the 70s. Keyboards are by Bob James and Herbie Hancock – and there's plenty of other great jazz players in the mix! LP, Vinyl record album

A record that's a bit of an anomaly, given that it was created in the time of Covid – as the Gorillaz work here with a whole host of guest stars – in the kind of musical party that most local authorities would shut down! Yet given the virtual nature of the group – the core of Damon Albarn and Remi Kabaka – the approach is a great one for the very unusual year of 2020 – as they open the creative door to contributions from Beck, Schoolboy Q, Robert Smith, Elton John, Peter Hook, Fatoumata Diawara, St Vincent, Slowthai, Leee John, and others. The record is accompanied by the kind of graphics that have helped cement the mixed imaginary image of the band – and titles include "Strange Timez", "The Valley Of The Pagans", "The Lost Chord", "Momentary Bliss", "Dead Butterflies", "Friday 13th", and "Chalk Tablet Towers". 1984, 2019. New Copy ... About September 7, 2021 (delayed)
A beautiful book on horror film soundtracks on vinyl – one that starts with the earliest days of scores for famous early Universal monster movies, then really takes off when it hits the glory days of the 70s and 80s soundtrack! The book nicely moves past the classic generation – and really digs deep into the new wave of sounds that were unleashed during the slasher years – with plenty on films that include Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday The 13th, and Nightmare On Elm Street – and a strong look at the rise of keyboards and rock elements in 80s horror soundtracks too. There's also special looks at John Carpenter, Fabio Frizzi, Harry Manfredini, Pino Donnagio, and other key composers – and the whole thing is plenty hefty, and very nicely done. Book

VariousNorthern Soul's Classiest Rarities Vol 6 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $11.99
Upbeat soul with plenty of polish – but never in a way that dampens the groove at all! Instead, these tracks mark a huge new level of sophistication in the soul world of the 60s – sounds from smaller labels who were learning the lessons of Motown – able to fuse together tight rhythms, great singers, and some strong arrangements that really send the whole thing home! In other words, if you dig the sound of 60s Motown, you'll find plenty here to love – even though the music here is much more obscure overall, pulled from smaller labels and even including some never-issued tracks from back in the day. As usual with Kent records, both the song choice and presentation is superb – excellent sound throughout, and notes that really illuminate this lost soul underground. CD features 24 tracks that include "Sunshine Love" by Difosco, "I Wanted To Tell You" by Little Nicky Soul, "Why You Wanna Treat Me The Way You Do" by The Hyperions, "You Won't Say Nothing" by Tamala Lewis, "Love Is Gonna Get You" by Peggy Woods, "I Only Cry Once A Day Now" by The Fidels, "Friday Night" by Johnnie Taylor, "Love Hangover" by Jean Carter, "Naughty Boy" by Jackie Day, "Wait A Minute" by The Kittens, "Sad Tomorrows" by Noony Rickett, "Young Boy Blues" by Daniela Stone, and "Nomad Woman" by Jock Mitchell with the Fabulous Agents. A really fantastic entry in this really great series – one that shows just how strongly the spirit of invention continued in the world of Japanese music as it moved into the 80s! As with previous volumes, the work here is a unique hybrid of influences from American and Japanese sources – partly based in jazz, but also with a fair bit of funk and soul too – modes that are used more directly here than on some of the more polished city pop work of the time – which means that if you like the sweet sound of American electric jazz funk of the late 70s, you'll find plenty to love here too! All cuts are from very rare albums issued by Columbia and Victor back in the day – and titles include "Kare Niwa Kanawanai" by Mizuki Kyama, "Sweet Soul Music" by Hitomi Tohyama, "Ame" by Yumi Sato, "Ojosan Ote Yawaraka Ni" by Kiyohiko Ozaki, "Kimono" by Tetsuo Sakurai, "Friday Night (ext dance mix)" by Jadoes, "Rainy Driver" by Hitomi Tohyama, and "Hello Suisei" by Sentimental City Romance. Nothing weird here, just wonderful – a fantastic assortment of music from a time when the British scene was really changing things up – served up in a book-styled package with notes that are as dynamic as its music! The tracks here move way past the obvious – that's an image of John Lennon on the cover, but these aren't the tracks by The Beatles and bigger acts of the time – and instead, the collection really does a great job of digging around all the really wonderful groups that were recording for the bigger British labels of the period, but who were given a lot of freedom to really try out new ideas – both in their music, and in the way the music was recorded. The package is the best we've ever seen to present this slice of English rock – and the set features 122 titles on 5CDs – with work from Ron Geesin, Atlanta Roots, Simon Dupree, The Smoke, John's Children, Ivor Cutler, Tinsel Arcade, The Soft Machine, Canto, New Generation, Medium Rare, 117 Venusian Moonshine, Friday's Chyld, New Generation, Third Ear Band, Wimple Winch, The Deviants, Sorrows, Rupert's People, Orange Bicycle, Shuster, Felius Andromeda, Tomorrow, Crystal Ship, The Moles, and many others – and the set also features 9 never-issued tracks!
