Dusko Goykovich with Nathan Davis & Mal WaldronSwinging Macedonia ... LP
Enja/Be! (Germany), 1966. New Copy (reissue)... $24.99
A legendary German session from the 60s – and a record that really showcases the unusual criss-crossing of modes that was going on in the European scene at the time! There's a very strong MPS vibe here – as trumpeter Dusko Goykovich leads a swinging sextet that includes Nathan Davis on flute, soprano, and tenor – blowing some tremendously soulful reed lines – plus incredible rhythms from Mal Waldron on piano, Peter Trunk on bass, and Cees See on drums. The record's an attempt to bring traditional Macedonian rhythms into a jazz perspective – but with players like these, it swings in a way any Macedonian album never could – damn soulful, and with a great exotic vibe. Davis is especially great, and plays in a soaring modal vein that's similar to his work on his classic MPS sides, and on the records he cut in America in the early 70s. The album's a beautiful session that often get's overlooked because it blends it with the Enja catalog – but it's really more of a record that belongs in an MPS reissue series, and is a great lost groover that's waiting to be rediscovered by the Dusty Groove crowd. Titles include "Macedonia", "Old Fisherman's Daughter", "Jumbo Uganda", "Bem Basha", "Saga Se karame", and "The Nights Of Skopje". LP, Vinyl record album

Archie Shepp & Mal WaldronLeft Alone Revisited ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 2002. New Copy ... $13.99
The duo of Archie Shepp and Mal Waldron come together beautifully here – in a mode that echoes some of the duets that pianist Waldron recorded with other reedmen in the 70s and 80s, but which has an especially wonderful contribution from Shepp! Archie blows both tenor and soprano sax – and the warmth of his horn in later years is really perfect here – especially as the album's sometime of an update of Waldron's earlier Left Alone classic, recorded after the death of Billie Holiday at the end of the 50s. As with that one, the tunes here include some numbers very strongly tied to Billie's legacy, but the vibe is very different, and very personal along the lines of the spirit of Shepp and Waldron. Titles include "Lady Sings The Blues", "Left Alone", "Easy Living", "Everything Happens To Me", "When Your Lover Has Gone", and "Blues For 52nd Street". CD

Mal WaldronMingus Lives ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1979. New Copy ... $16.99
Not a Charles Mingus tribute album, as you might guess from the title – but instead, a wonderful session of solo piano work from the great Mal Waldron – one that's full of long tracks spun out beautifully in a live setting – all with a strong sense of freedom, but also a very rhythmic, inside quality that's a different than some of Waldron's more avant solo recordings! There's a lyrical vibe to the record that's a great reminder of Waldron's roots – his ability to mix gentle moments with darker themes – and a command of the piano that makes it clear that when Mal's playing, he owes nothing to anyone else. Titles include "Mingus Lives", "Tensile Structures", "Here There & Everywhere", and "Mingus Lives". CD

Mal WaldronMoods (with bonus track) ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... About May 26, 2021 (delayed)
A bold musical statement from Mal Waldron – one of his strongest efforts from his European time of the 70s, thanks to some great help from strong hornmen on the set! Half the session features Waldron in introspective solo mode, as recorded often at the time – but the rest of the album features work by a bold sextet that includes Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Terumasa Hino on cornet, and Hermann Breuer on trombone. These group tracks are all quite long, and although free at times, have a focus and energy that's not only uncommon for Waldron in the period – but also for Lacy, who wasn't often working in such a style. Terumasa Hino's horn, as usual, is a strongly punctuating force on the set – and group titles include "Minoat", "Sieg Haile", and "A Case Of Plus 4s". Solo numbers include "Anxiety", "Lonely", and "Happiness" – all quite nice numbers, just a bit gentler and more introspective. CD features the bonus track "Soul Eyes". CD

Mal WaldronOne-Upmanship ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
An excellent 70s European session recorded by Mal Waldron – one that shows off some of his more avant jazz inclinations at the time! The group's a searing one, with an unusual combination of players – Steve Lacy on soprano sax, Manfred Schoof on trumpet, Jimmy Woode on bass, and Makaya Ntshoko on drums – and while the pairing of Lacy and Waldron is a familiar, and excellent one – it's also great to hear both of them in this quintet mode too. The tracks are all long – with an approach that's in that later Waldron modal mode on the rhythms, but which gets freer and more open on the solos. Titles include "The Seagulls Of Kristiansund", "Hurray For Herbie", and "One-Upmanship". CD

Mal WaldronTouch Of The Blues ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
There's maybe a touch of the blues here – but the results, as usual for Mal Waldron, are completely different overall – which makes for a really magical moment from a time that was a real creative high point in Waldron's career! All tracks are long originals by Mal – played with a trio that features Allen Blairman on drums and Jimmy Woode on some especially strong bass – very different than most of his other work of the time, and really colored by the moodier colors of the Waldron palette – often played with a pointed, succinct quality that even beats his contributions to the Clarke Boland Big Band. The music leans outside, but is never as totally free as some of Waldron's more improvised recordings – and titles include the 17 minute "A Touch Of The Blues", plus "The Search" and "Here There & Everywhere". Mal WaldronWhat It Is ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1981. New Copy ... $16.99
A great one from pianist Mal Waldron – a set that marks that renewed sense of energy he found as the 80s approached – a move back to some tighter forms in terms of the inside/outside edge of the improvisational spectrum – but still with some of the freer spirit he'd unlocked in the 70s! The tracks are all nice and long, and are forged by a quartet that features Clifford Jordan on tenor, Cecil McBee on bass, and Dannie Richmond on drums – a group who definitely have some of the spirit of Jordan in this setting, but with all the deeper tones that Waldron can bring to a date. Jordan is tremendous, and the album features three long tracks – "Charlie Parker's Last Supper", "Hymn From The Inferno", and "What It Is". CD

Black Saint (Italy), 1980s/Early 90s. Used 4 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Tremendous work from Mal Waldron – four later albums that have him hitting a whole new level of power! Waldron's always been a compelling artist – from his 50s hardbop work to his 60s modern moments to his rich array of overseas recordings in the 70s. But on these 80s sides for Black Saint/Soul Note, he takes off in a rich new direction – one that's stepped in the sort of spiritual modes that other American players were using in the 70s, touched with some of Waldron's more creative, complex approaches to jazz! The lineup on these records is all great – with stellar reed work from either Sonny Fortune, Ricky Ford, or Charlie Rouse – and trumpet by the great Woody Shaw on two of the dates – plus bass by Reggie Workman, and drums from Eddie Moore and Ed Blackwell. Tracks are very long on most records – lots of hard-burning, stretched-out, all-soul solos that are mighty nice! Includes the full albums The Git Go, Seagulls Of Kristiansund, Crowd Scene, and Where Are You – packed in small LP-styled sleeves. CD

Hard talk, and lots of heavy sounds from the great Mal Waldron – heard here in a set that may well be one of his greatest moments of the 70s! The album's a key illustration of Waldron's power on the European scene of the time – and it's noteworthy not just for Mal's bold vision as a leader, but also for key contributions from Steve Lacy on soprano sax and Manfred Schoof on trumpet! Both artists really bring a lot to Waldron's music – filling up the long tracks with voices that are as powerful and righteous as the leader's own – spurred on by some great rhythm work from Isla Eckinger on bass and Allen Blairman on drums. A fantastic run of work from pianist Mal Waldron – an artist who was already years ahead of his time when he broke on the scene in the 50s, but never got a chance to fully explore all of his many musical ideas until he formed a strong partnership with the Black Saint/Soul Note label in the 80s! This huge set features 11 different albums, each one a slight variation on Waldron's talents – all records that are packaged here in individual record-style covers – so that you get a CD version of the albums as they originally appeared on the market. Most of these are more intimate recordings – and the set includes one solo album, two duets each with David Friesen and Steve Lacy, albums with singers Judi Silvano, Tiziana Ghiglioni, and Kim Parker – a quartet date with Anthony Braxton, and another with Chico Freeman – and also one more trio album. ✨✧ Mal WaldronFree At Last (extended edition – with bonus tracks) ... LP
ECM (Germany), 1969. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... Out Of Stock
The title's no mistake, as the album was really one of Mal Waldron's first really outside sessions – a real embrace of the free jazz modes coming out of the European scene of the 60s, but in a way that's slightly different than most! As Waldron states in the liner notes, his vision here is free, but not total chaos – an approach to music that's much more unfettered than before, yet still somewhat rhythmically structured – so that the tunes themselves roll out with a great deal of drive and energy, almost modal at points, but a bit fuller overall. The rhythm section here is a great part of the success of the album – with Clarence Becton on drums and the amazing Isla Eckinger on bass – a player whose pulsating approach is a perfect foil for Waldron's bold work on piano. There's actually a surprising amount of groove-driven numbers here – hardly the free jazz of the FMP scene, and more in the mode of some of the most unfettered expressions going down at MPS at the time. Titles include "Rat Now", "Balladina", "1 3 234", "Rock My Soul", and "Boo". Features a full bonus album – with alternate takes of "Balladina", "Boo", and "1 3 234" – and a long take of "Willow Weep For Me". LP, Vinyl record album

Incredible early work from Mal Waldron – a trio session, but one with a lot of dark edges! The record's a pivotal chapter in Waldron's career – definitely full of the sorts of impressions promised in the title – and tunes include the incredible "Champs Elysees", plus "Ciao", "All About Us", and "C'est Formidable". Mal Waldron plays the blues, but in a way that's hardly blue at all – given that the record is one from a time when the pianist was really setting a strong modern fire on the European scene in the 70s! The group's an unusual one – with bassist Jimmy Woode, of the Clark Boland Big Band, and drummer Pierre Favre – a player best known for his more modern moments – both musicians whose scope might just be wide enough to augment all the great ideas that Waldron was bringing to the piano on the album's mighty long tracks! By this point in his career, Mal had really taken off from his earlier American recordings – using the freedom of both the Japanese and European recording scenes to be a lot more expressive, and a lot more freewheeling – to a point where he's completely captivating, with non-stop imagination and a flurry of fresh ideas throughout. A slightly different album than usual from Japanese avant piano legend Yosuke Yamashita – a tribute to Mal Waldron, and one that maybe has a bit more of a straight swing and sense of soul than some of Yamashita's other records from the time! The Waldron vibe is very strong here – and Yosuke plays with that sense of majesty that seemed to show up in Mal's music especially during the period when he was recording more often in Japan and Europe than his American home – an open sense of flow that's not entirely free jazz, but which is very spacious and souring. The trio features Katsuo Kuninaka on bass – and Shota Koyama on drums – and titles include versions of Mal Waldron's "Minoat", "Trane's Soul Eyes", and "One Upmanship" – plus the Yamashita original "Mal Is Back In Town". Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". Both players are wonderfully hip here – more than enough to match Trane's unique musical vision for the group's format – and the sound of the session is much edgier than some of his other Prestige work – which may be why the label chose not to issue it until 1963, even though it was recorded back in '57. Beautiful work from the incredible Nara Leao – a record that's lightly driven by the bossa, but with some sadder and darker touches that really set the sound apart! Backings on most tracks are simply spare percussion, and an acoustic guitar follows Nara's vocals as they dart in and out of the shadows – giving the record the moody feel of some of Baden Powell's best late 60s work, but with a slightly lighter feel overall – thanks to Nara's vocals. There's a great undercurrent of melancholy throughout – but one that doesn't overwhelm the record, as on some of the too-emotive sides by Brazilian divas of a few years before – and overall, the whole thing is an amazing balance of styles that comes off perfectly! The tracks are all quite long – and played by a sharp quintet with Mingus on bass, Jackie McLean on alto sax, JR Monterose on tenor, Mal Waldron on piano, and Willie Jones on drums. Titles include "Pithecantrhopus Erectus", "A Foggy Day", "Love Chant", and "Profile of Jackie". The whole thing bubbles over with an anger and intensity that you hardly find in other Mingus albums, and if you've ever heard a weak Mingus album, and wondered what all the fuss was about, you owe it to yourself to own this one! We promise that it will never ever let you down. LP, Vinyl record album

BMG (Brazil), 1971. Used ... $24.99
A groovy little Brazilian pop group – with touches of soul, bossa, and funk in the mix! The album is the group's second – and it's got some very nice tracks that were arranged by Waltel Branco, done in that mixture of 60s grooves and early 70s funky pop that's the hallmark of our favorite artists of the Blue Brazil generation. Lyrics are in Portuguese – but there's an expansive approach here that's all global, similar to the mindblowing work of Marcos Valle from the same time. Titles include "Nem Adeus", "Eliana", "Todo Meu Amor", "Sai De Lado", "Tema De Fanny", "O Mal Passara", and "Cada Um Na Sua". CD reissue also includes 2 bonus tracks – "Lana" and "Voce Fingiu"! CD

Polydor/Universal (Japan), 1965. New Copy ... $24.99
One of the most striking recordings of the 60s from the legendary Astor Piazzolla – a set recorded live in New York, and one that explodes with new sounds right from the very first note! Astor's in prime modernist form here – completely exploding the old format of the tango, stripping it of its romanticism, and using the medium to explore deeper, richer feelings – with this completely inventive blend of instrumentation that mixes electric guitar, violin, piano, and bass with the leader's incredible lines on the bandoneon. The whole thing is amazing – a jaw-dropping expression of all that made Piazzolla such an important musical figure at this time – and titles include "La Mufa", "Mal Del Plata 70", "Canto De Octubre", "Vayamos Al Diablo", "Resurreccion Del Angel", "Romance Del Diablo", and "Tango Diablo". CD also features six more bonus tracks – fantastic music recorded in 1967! CD

Maria RitaSegundo ... CD
Warner, 2005. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The amazing second album from Brazilian singer Maria Rita – and a real departure from the first! This time around, Maria's working live in the studio – in a warmly spontaneous setting that's a nice departure from the more confined modes of her debut – and which is given some especially nice touches on production by Lenine! There's a spirit here that goes far beyond Rita's introduction to the world as the daughter of Elis Regina – and which has the singer really moving into her own territory, and working with some of the more globally-directed soul of some of the other young singers of the current Brazilian scene. Most tracks feature strong acoustic piano from Tiago Costa – who also handled most of the arrangements on the album, and brings in a warm mix of jazz that occasionally grooves with a few funky touches as well. We're honestly surprised at how much we love this one – and in one fell swoop, Rita's managed to challenge so many of the electronically-augmented Brazilian singers of late – with a mostly-acoustic outing that's got even more raw power! Titles include "Mal Intento", "Recado", "Caminho Das Aguas", "Casa Pre-Fabricada", "Minha Alma", "Sobre Todas As Coisas", and "Sem Aviso". CD

One of Archie Shepp's most soulful records of the 70s – and proof that the Horo label could get amazing work out of any player! The record features Shepp in a spare trio setting – with Cameron Brown on bass and Clifford Jarvis on drums – and each of the four sides features an extended reading of more traditional jazz material, yet still done in a manner that's quite free, and extremely soulful. Side one features Shepp's "Hooray For Mal", side three features the excellent "Things Have Got to Change" by the great Cal Massey, and the remaining sides feature two great Ellington interpretations, "I Didn't Know About You" and "Sophisticated Lady". TitaL'Incomparable Tita ... CD
Barclay/Universal (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99 About July 21, 2021
Beautiful bossa from late 60s France – a really lovely session that mixes the vocals of Tita with jazzy backings from Trio Camara – who we know from their own legendary album on the Saravah label! The sound here is a bit different than bossa from Brazil – somewhat darker at points, carried off in that cool continental mode that would sometimes show up when sounds from Rio were filtered through 60s Paris – kind of an extra level of hipness that really makes for some special music here. There's a bit of additional strings next to the trio's backing, which underscores some elements of sadness and also makes for a bit of a soundtrack feel at points – and other instrumentation includes acoustic guitar and some occasional flute. Titles include "Anjo", "Trapezista", "Zefa", "Um Motivo De Ser", "Beatriz", "Nao Faz Mal", "Quebra Mar", and "Vejo A Tarde Cair". CD

A cool collection of late 60s rock and pop from Brazil – and a set that stands as a nice contrast to some of the "song festival" albums from the time on Philips and Odeon! Like those sets, this one presents up-and-coming artists working through a variety of material – but rather than showcasing new styles, the modes here are maybe more in the jovem guarda style of the mid 60s – a bit more slavishly tied to American and European styles, although a few of the tunes here are of Brazilian origin too. There's a bit more complexity and sophistication to the music than the chart pop of a few years before – kind of in the way that west coast pop rock acts were letting their hair down a bit by the late 60s – and titles include "Como E Grande O Meu Amor Por Voce" by Os Intrusus, "O Que Ha De Mal Em Mim" by Bitons, "You Only Live Twice" by Os Agitadores, "When Summer Is Gone" by Analfabitles, "Voce Nao Serve Pra Mim" by Amir Francisco, and "Travessia" by Edinho. A great tribute to the mighty talents of Enja Records – a German label that really helped build bridges in the 70s – expanding out from its base in Munich to offer a lot of strong opportunities for American players as well! The Enja touch is a really special one – an approach that allows lots of freedom for the musicians, although rarely in a free jazz sort of way – as Enja helped find new levels of straight jazz expression at a time when so many other American labels were either getting very commercial, or closing up shop – one more reason why Enja's ability to welcome older artists in just the right way was so important. This 2CD set is overflowing with gems from the Enja catalog – 19 killers that include "Only Blue" by Bobby Jones, "Spacemaker" by Pepper Adams, "Blues For EP" by Mal Waldron, "Voyage" by Kenny Barron, "Softly As In A Morning Sunrise" by John Scofield, "Outpost Blues" by Freddie Hubbard, "Body & Soul" by Tete Montoliu, "Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child" by Hannibal Marvin Peterson, "Rahsaan's Run" by Woody Shaw, "My One & Only Love" by Bennie Wallace, "Kaybee" by Attila Zoller, "Peace" by Chet Baker, "By George" by Elvin Jones, "Soul Connection" by Dusky Goykovich, and "My Romance" by Archie Shepp. CD

Way more than just an album with Gene Ammons as a leader – and instead, a set with a great array of supporting players, and a very loose, open-ended jam session style that lets everyone get in plenty of solo space! Ammons' tenor is tremendous, but he's also a great collaborator here, too – working with Idrees Suliman on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone, Mal Waldron on piano, Art Taylor on drums, Doug Watkins on bass, and Ray Barretto on conga – in a mode that's maybe slightly tighter than some of the blowing sessions Prestige was doing at the time, but which still has that key longform creative energy that made the hardbop generation so great. Titles include "Blue Gene", "Scamperin", "Blue Greens n Beans", and "Hip Tip" – and all tracks are long, with plenty of focus on solos! LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic sounds from the grittiest years of the 45rpm single – music that's so mad, so strange, it really defies description! All the cuts here are presented in conjunction with the long-running Fool's Paradise radio show on WFMU – a longtime champion of all things weird and wild – always reminding us that in the glory days of vinyl, there was so much stuff set to record that really defied any sort of description – sounds that usually were quite far from the charts as well! Many numbers have a guest singing along with Gal – vocalists who include Criolo, Silva, Rodrigo Amarante, Seu Jorge, and others – and given the gentle instrumentation and light strings, the approach almost takes us back to Gal's debut album Domingo, which was a set of duets with Caetano Veloso. One of the great Prestige jam session sides, featuring a host of their great players – Coltrane, Mal Waldron, Paul Quinichette, Art Taylor, and Wess – running through some long tracks in fairly free form. ✨✧ VariousNew Jazz Festival Balver Hohle – New Jazz 1976 & 1977 (8CD set) ... CD
Be! (Germany), 1976/1977. New Copy 8CD ... Out Of Stock
A heck of a collection – and one that really gets at the amazing array of free-thinking jazz that was brewing up on the European scene during the 70s! The set brings together over eight hours of music recorded during two years of this legendary festival – and each new disc has some great surprises along the way! There's some possibly more familiar material here – such as long improvisations that include a solo piano performance by Joachim Kuhn, two by a Mal Waldron trio with Jimmy Woode on bass and Allen Blairman on drums, one by a trio headed by pianist Yosuke Yamashita and with Akira Sakata on alto, two more by the duo of Peter Brotzmann on tenor and Han Bennink on drums, and a final two long improvisations by a great Archie Shepp gruop with Richard Greenlee on trombone, Dave Burell on piano, Cameron Brown on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums! Yet that's only the tip of the iceberg – as there's a full CD of music by a group led by Hugo Heredia on saxes and flute – with Horace Parlan on piano, Dodo Goys on bass, Tullio D'Piscopo on drums, and Mandrake Ivanir Do Nascimento on percussion. And there's another CD that features an hour-long improvisation by a version of the Willem Breuker Kollektief with Leo Cuypers on piano, Maarten Van Norden on tenor, Boy Raaymakers on trumpet, and Bernhard Hunnekink and Willem Van Manen on trombones. There's also a very long track by a cool quartet headed by Polish alto giant Zbigniew Namyslowski – and one more by the French Machi Oul Big Band. There's also tracks by Riot, with Uli Beckerhoff on trumpet; Grumpff with Michael Schlaper on tenor and soprano, and Ekkehard Jost on baritone; Mumps with Albert Mangelsdorff on trombone and John Surman on tenor; and the Eddie Prevost Quartet with Geoff Hawkins on tenor and Gerry Gold on trumpet. And last but not least are two long trcks by the Czech group Celula Jazz Crew – with Laco Deczi on trumpet, Karel Ruzicka on electric piano, and Svatopluc Kosvanec on trombone. Phew – that's a lot of music, and the whole thing comes in a very cool 10" box set, complete with a booklet of notes, too! CD

✨✧ Eric DolphyEric Dolphy At The Five Spot Vol 1 ... LP
Prestige/OJC, 1961. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Searing live work from Eric Dolphy – part of a series of recordings that set a whole new standard for live jazz recording! The record features Dolphy going even farther out than on his studio sides from the time – as the record features very long tracks performed by a crack group that includes Booker Little on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Despite the length of the tracks, Dolphy isn't as far out as on later European live recordings – but the performance is a great example of his inventiveness within a mainstream structure, and the modernist tendencies of both Waldron and Little shine very brightly in the set. The concert was one of Little's last (and greatest) recordings – sometimes billed as a "memorial", even though he was still alive when it was done – and titles on this volume include "Fire Waltz", "Bee Vamp", and "The Prophet". Impulse (Japan), 1962. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Stunning! This is a beautiful album that's one of Max Roach's most powerful recordings, and a record that's been the inspiration for countless other imitations over the years. Roach leads a group with Richard Williams, Clifford Jordan, and Mal Waldron – and they're matched with a vocal chorus led by Coleridge Perkinson, who also did the arrangements for Donald Byrd's classic "with voices" albums. Unlike those, though, this set's a damn angry bunch of compositions, and the chorus wails away in a loud screaming powerful mode that will blow away any of your preconceptions about the "with voices" mode. The group sings wordless vocals (except for one cut, which has Abbey Lincoln singing in the lead), and provides a searing backdrop of sound for the band's razor sharp playing. Every cut's a winner, and the whole thing's a masterpiece! Titles include "The Profit", "It's Time", and "Another Valley". CD

A really cool collection, from that great moment when the French hip hop scene exploded on the world with a whole new sound and whole new style! Back in the early days of the old school, some folks thought the French language would never work for rap music – but this generation of performers and producers really proved them wrong – by working with new levels of rhythms, samples, and arrangements borrowed from the true school generation – which really opened up the possibilities in the music! Titles include "Retour Aux Pyramides" and "One One One" by X Men, "Mot Pour Mot" by Rocca, "Dans La Sono" by Beat De Boul, "Ma Face En Premiere Page" by Roce, "Crazy" by Iris Flynt Lyricson & Para One, "Grave Dans La Roche" by Sniper, "K1 Fry Invasion (rmx)" by Mafia K1 Fry, "Les Flammes Du Mal" by Passi, and "La Magie Du Tiroir" by 2 Bal 2 Neg. Bemol/Discobertas (Brazil), 1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Ahmed Abdul-MalikJazz Sounds Of Africa (Music Of Ahmed Abdul-Malik/Sounds Of Africa) ... CD
New Jazz/Prestige, 1961/1962. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
Revolutionary work from one of the most important talents you never heard of – 2 jazz/world classics from the amazing Ahmed Abdul-Malik! The CD begins with The Music Of Ahmed Abdul Malik from 1961 – a record that has the bassist working in a very sophisticated cross-cultural mode – pulling together many different strands of jazz and Eastern music, forging them into a very unique sound. Unlike some of Malik's other records, which featured a style that was very heavy on Middle Eastern instrumentation, this one's got a very even blend of jazz – and features excellent work by Tommy Turrentine on trumpet, Calo Scott on cello, Eric Dixon on tenor, and Andrew Cyrille on drums. Malik himself plays bass and oud, and the record's got a snaking mix of jazz and exoticism that's roughly similar to Yusef Lateef's work on Savoy, or some of Sun Ra's work from the time. Titles include "Nights On Saturn", "La Ibkey", "The Hustlers", and "Oud Blues". Sounds Of Africa is one of Malik's greatest – a combination of both his modern and experimental sides, a mixture of off-key hardbop and odd instrumentation that includes cello, oud, and lots of extra percussion. The fantastic Tommy Turrentine plays trumpet on one cut, Richard Williams plays on all others – and the percussionists include Chief Bey, Montego Joe, and Andrew Cyrille! Titles include "The African Bossa Nova", "Wakida Hena", "Communication", "Suffering", and "Nadusilma". CD

That Damon Albarn's a busy guy! When he's not busy being a rock star or mock rock star, he's off on holiday in some exotic locale – but making another record at the same time, like this one, recorded in Mali. We have to admit, though we were predisposed towards the bare field recordings – featuring Malians singing and playing guitar and kora – which sound great, the more produced numbers are suprisingly wonderful too, and though the record's all over the map, it still plays like a beautiful journey from start to finish. As you may already know, music from Mali steers it's own course, quite different from most of the other Afrobeat and funky African grooves you'll find elsewhere on our page, with a light springy quality and unhurried openness. 16 tracks in all, including "Le Relax", "Makelekele", "Tennessee Hotel", "Kela Village" and "Sunset Coming On". A really great second set from Harriet Brown – one of those "recorded at home" soul records that may well set the tone for a generation to come! Brown's got this always-skittish, almost-nervous approach to his music – one that often echoes the lyrics of the tunes, and their openly personal sense of anxiety – this pent-up, wrapped-up mode that always feels like it's going to explode – and which maybe feels even more so because Brown put the whole project together himself, away from any companionship in the studio. Apart from two guest vocal appearances, the whole thing is Harriet's own – beautifully so – with titles that include "Retail Therapy", "Shower Up Saddle Up", "Window Shopping", "Holy Place", "Method", "Driver's Seat", and "Bag Away". Maybe the first-ever collection of the work of this important group from Djibouti – a huge state-financed ensemble whose performances were captured on tape for radio, but never issued as regular commercial albums at the time! 4 Mars take their name from a key moment of independence in the young nation – and they're a very powerful force on these recordings from the 80s and early 90s – bringing together a huge amount of current concepts from the East African scene, all within a very large, shifting array of singers, percussionists, and horn players too! At times, the rhythms almost seem to echo Jamaican music, but there's also currents of Ethiopian and Sudanese styles too – no surprise, given the crossroads of Djibouti, which maybe makes the group as welcoming to outside styles as they are importantly representing their nation's culture. As with other sets on the Ostinato label, the package is an essential look at sounds we never would have heard otherwise – rescued from the tape archive of the national radio station, and presented here with very detailed notes on the music and culture at the time.
