Maybe the crowning achievement of drummer Makaya McCraven so far – a double-length set that stands as a huge testimony to all the many waves he's been making in jazz for the past few years! The album features four slices of live performance – recorded in New York, Chicago, LA, and London – and as with every one of his different projects, Makaya seems to bring a different voice to each live track here – recording with Brandee Younger on harp and Joel Ross on vibes in New York, Shabaka Hutchings on tenor in Chicago; Nubya Garcia on tenor and Ashley Henry on Rhodes in London; and Josh Johnson on alto, Jeff Parker on guitar, Carlos Nino on percussion, and Miguel Atwood-Ferguson on violin in LA! The rhythms are as amazing as the contributions from the different soloists – and the sound of the record is maybe something we'd call post-spiritual – moving past that Coltrane-inspired mode that's been revived so well in the 21st Century, while still holding onto its best sense of energy. The approach is similar to some of Makaya's own albums – which are both performed and re-cut – and the core of Gil's lyrics are in place, but with instrumentation that's maybe even more powerful and moving than the original release – and which takes on a slightly different shape, with some rearrangement of the songs – backed by McCraven on drums and keyboards, Joel Ross on vibes, Brandee Younger on harp, Jeff Parker on guitar, Junius Paul on bass, and some other key talents from the International Anthem side of the universe. Chicago finally gets its due – in this great series that previously gave us the Philadelphia Experiment and Detroit Experiment projects! This time around, though, the lineup is even more top-shelf – filled with the kind of artists who really make us proud to be part of the Windy City – many of them players with slightly different styles and approaches, which is what makes the record such a great break from the usual! Maybe the most majestic album that Makaya McCraven has recorded to date – and that's really saying a lot, given the power of his music on previous records! This time around, the group is large, and the performance is more organic than some of the more mixed/produced sessions that Makaya has given us – and great as those records have been, there's a sense of power here that really places McCraven strongly in the Chicago legacy of the 20th Century – a jazz spectrum that includes Eddie Harris, Ramsey Lewis, Charles Stepney, the Art Ensemble Of Chicago, and so many other musical giants! The mix of instrumentation is almost like some Chess/Cadet session from the end of the 60s – but Makaya still adds in some samples and electronics next to his acoustic work on percussion, drums, and a variety of other instruments – next to Jeff Parker on guitar, Brandee Younger on harp, Joel Ross on vibes, Marquis Hill on trumpet, and Junius Paul on bass – all tremendous players and strong leaders in their own right – working here to make a special sort of magic with McCraven. Killer Fender Rhodes – spun out over some wonderfully long tracks that really let Greg Spero stretch out and do his thing! The set's dedicated to Miles Davis and Radiohead – and you can definitely here plenty of the former in the mix – no surprise given the lineup which includes Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Junius Paul on bass, and Makaya McCraven on drums – a fantastic group that does a great job of matching Spero's funky, fluid energy! Spero's keys are sometimes sweet, sometimes quite fierce – in that hard-biting way that really recalls the best Miles electric modes, yet crafted here with a more spacious sound that's plenty soulful, and downright funky at times too! Titles include "Jean Pierre", "Sly", "Exit Music For A Film", "Blue In Green", and "So What In Its Right Place". CD

A really fantastic issue of this seminal jazz publication – one that has a great cover feature on our hometown hero, drummer Makaya McCraven! As usual with We Jazz, the whole package is as great as the cover – page after squarebound page of great photographs and images, almost more of a book than a magazine – with more features that include a rare interview with Sonny Rollins done by Ashley Khan, a new column by Mats Gustafsson, and more articles on Eric Dolphy, Adolphe Sax, Amina Claudine Myers, and Ronald Snijders – plus more on Bength Frippe Nordstrom, Rosanna & Zelia, the We Jazz Festival, and the Jazz Room Record label – all with great photos too. A really unusual album of improvised music from the Chicago scene – one that's got a unique approach that makes it even greater than the sum of its parts! The music began when Danish musicians Jonas Munk and Jakob Skott came to Chicago – and had a chance to work with some of the city's most creative players – a lineup that includes members of both Tortoise and Chicago Underground – Jeff Parker, Rob Mazurek, Mat Lux, Dan Bitney, and Brian Keigher. The players improvised live in the studio, often in rhythmic progressions that feel a lot like the work Parker and Mazurek did together over the years – but then Munk reworked the tapes afterwards, editing and reconstructing – using a similar approach to reworking improvisation as on some of the albums by Makaya McCraven. The result is a very unusual outing – and titles include "Emanuelle", "Soup", "Spine Dots", "Pretty Nice", "Delivery", "Glide Path", "Spirals", and "Parallel Motions". CD

Matt Gold is a Chicago guitarist, one you might know from his work with Makaya McCraven – but here, he's out on his own, as a very different artist overall – delivering a mix of moody little numbers that were all recorded on his own during the depths of a Windy City winter – with Matt adding in some vocals, and handling a range of different instruments as well! A number of tracks have acoustic guitar, and are more laidback, personal, and almost recall solo work from the acoustic underground – while others are more song-based, with forward rhythms that are usually topped with vocals.
