Main SourceBreaking Atoms (2LP pic disc – with bonus tracks) ... LP
Wild Pitch/P-Vine (Japan), 1991. New Copy (reissue)... $51.99 59.99 About November 2, 2022
A record that no hip hop home should be without – the one and only album from Main Source, but a set that's more than strong enough to stand next to the best from contemporaries like De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, and Black Sheep! Like all three of those groups, these guys have a way of bringing together fresh rhythms and samples, sharp-edged writing, and a keen sense of wit – all part of that next-generation level of intellectual hip hop that made them so groundbreaking at the time – and which still makes this album a fantastic delight all these many years later! The album introduced the world to the genius of Large Professor – and continues to shine for decades, thanks to tunes that include "Snake Eyes", "Looking At The Front Door", "Live At The Barbecue", "Just A Friendly Game Of Baseball", "Peace Is Not The Word To Play", "Watch Roger Do His Thang", "He Got So Much Soul (He Don't Need No Music)", and "Just Hangin Out". Brand New HeaviesHeavy Rhyme Experience Vol 1 (orange vinyl pressing) (2022 Record Store Day Drop) ... LP
Delicious Vinyl, 1992. New Copy (reissue)... $22.99
A pivotal album from the early 90s – one that not only furthered the rebirth of live funk instrumentation at a time when ditigal elements dominated the scene – but also really opened up that mode to a whole new generation of hip hop as well! At a time when the music was all about the samples and beats, Brand New Heavies took it back to the generation before – and provided live instrumentation for a host of fantastic talents – a legendary lineup that includes performances from Main Source, The Pharcyde, Black Sheep, Kool G Rap, Gang Starr, and Masta Ace – all young and at the top of their game, with a quality level that alone would make the album great – then really sends it over the top when paired with the instrumentation! The whole thing's amazing – still maybe yet to be topped in such a style – and titles include "Who Makes The Loot", "It's Getting Hectic", "Wake Me When I'm Dead", "Soul Flower", and "Bonafide Funk". Large ProfessorBeatz Vol 3 (Instrumentals) ... LP
Paul Sea Productions, 2022. New Copy ... $34.99 38.99
The Large Professor's a producer who needs no introduction from us – and even though he first rose to fame from the hip hop underground of the 90s, his skills in the studio are still very much head and shoulders above the rest! Here, the Professor serves up a set of spare instrumentals – often with nicely jagged beats on the bottom and some occasional warmer or jazzier flourishes over the top – the kind of modes that go all the way back to his work in Main Source! Titles include "Ancestors", "Hood Rich", "Friendly Skies", "Bboy Delight", "Saturday Night Soul", "Jettin", and "Let It Fly". LP, Vinyl record album

VariousJukebox In Crampsville – 60 Way Out Tunes At A Dime Apiece ... CD
Righteous (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $14.99 20.99
Mad music that you might never have heard otherwise – the fantastic fifth installment in this excellent series inspired by The Cramps – and maybe the deepest-digging so far! There's no holds barred here – both in the source of the material, and the style – and the main criteria just seems to be finding tracks that are as way-out and wild as possible – almost all of which are pulled from the 45rpm underground of the late 50s and early 60s! The "jukebox" in the title is well-placed – as most of these cuts are mad rompers that would really liven up a nightclub – but we also can't imagine there ever being any jukebox as hip as this one, to bring all these fantastic singles together. Titles include "Icky Poo" by The Nomads, "Pimples & Braces" by Ric Gary, "Fling" by The Phaetons, "Laffin Beatnik" by Johnny Beeman, "Bop Crazy Baby" by Vern Pullens, "Boom Stix" by Curley & The Jades, "Cannibal Stew" by Jerry & Mel, "Talk About A Party" by Lee Braun, "Mad Gass" by The Royal Teens, "Mama's Place" by Bing Day, "Mo Taters" by The Earthworms, "I'm The Wolfman" by Round Robin, "A Logger's Wife" by Buzz Martin, and "Strollie Bun" by The Blonde Bomber. ✨✧ VariousSuper Breaks – Return To The Old School – Classic Breaks & Beats From The Birth Of Hip Hop ... LP
BGP (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 LPs ... $18.99 26.98
A damn classic entry in the Super Breaks series from BGP – one that's filled with crucial sample cuts from the old school – some really wonderful funky nuggets, brought together here as a great reminder of the tracks that first got us digging back in the day! There's less of the totally obscure numbers here than you might find on other Super Breaks volumes, but things aren't totally mainstream either – and the compilers have not only done a great job of pulling together tracks that were really important for hip hop, but have also managed to put a really fresh spin on the music altogether – reminding us once again that even in the age of digital music, nothing beats a well-done compilation! Titles include "Shifting Gears" by Johnny Hammond, "Mary Mary" by The Monkees, "Scratchin" by Magic Disco Machine, "It's Just Begun" by Jimmy Castor, "Africano" by Earth Wind & Fire, "Apache" by Incredible Bongo Band, "Got To Get A Knutt" by New Birth, "Get Up & Dance" by Freedom, "Super Sporm" by Captain Sky, "Who Is He & What Is He To You" by Creative Source, "Funky President" by James Brown, "Blow Your Head" by The JBs, "Johnny The Fox" by Thin Lizzy, "Let A Woman Be A Woman Let A Man Be A Man" by Dyke & The Blazers, "The Clapping Song" by Shirley Ellis, and "Get Ya Some" by Melvin Sparks. ✨✧ VariousLife:Styles – Bugz In The Attic ... LP
Harmless (UK), 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A massive massive groove party from Bugz In The Attic – one that's overflowing with sweet 70s jazz, funk, and soul! This may well be our favorite entry in the Life:Styles series so far – and it's certainly the most unified collection, thanks to a keen ear for a mellow-grooving classic track! The overall feel almost takes us back to the great sound of the legendary Capitol Rare compilations – and the territory here is very similar, with a strong focus on jazz-inflected soul tunes from the end of the 70s and early 80s – of the sort we never tire of hearing! The whole thing's a modern soul lover's delight – and the 2LP set features 10 tracks in all, including "Think" by Carole Sylvan, "Come For The Ride" by Tom Browne, "In My Dreams" by Will Downing, "Come To Me" by Jermaine Jackson, "Heavy Love Affair" by Marvin Gaye, "Good Lovin Is Good Livin" by Creative Source, "Sunshowers" by Dr Buzzard, "Square Biz" by Teena Marie, "I Choose You" by Paris, and "I wanna Do Something Freaky To You" by Leon Haywood. ✨✧ MadlibShades Of Blue – Madlib Invades Blue Note ... LP
Blue Note, 2003. Near Mint- 2LP ... Out Of Stock
Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. ✨✧ Whit Boyd ComboParty Girls ... CD
Modern Harmonic, 1969. New Copy ... $13.99 15.99
Funky organ jazz from a very unlikely source – a Texas-made porno from 1969, and a movie that dared ask the question "Do prostitutes make good wives?" The music is unusual in that it's actually pretty darn good – nice small combo jazz, often with a good current of funk in the mix – surprisingly still around after all these years, on audio tapes that stand where no extant copy of the film remains! The sound is nice and raw – heavy drums, plenty of Hammond, and some trumpet solos too – all with a feel that's maybe more like a gem from the contemporary funk underground, although a lot grittier overall! Plus, most tracks are nice and long – clearly scored for extended sex scenes – which is a real rarity for music like this of the time, usually served up on the short side of a funky 45. The set begins with the trailer-like "Don't Miss The Party Girls" – then soars into the 15 minute "Nikki & The College Boys", and the 23 minute "Party Scene/Strip Poker" – plus a version of the James Brown tune "I Got The Feelin". CD features bonus tracks – "Marathon Groove", "The First Girl's Story", and "Chardonnay Negligee" – plus the full take of the James Brown tune! CD

VariousCosmic Machine The Sequel – A Voyage Across French Cosmic & Electronic Avantgarde (with bonus CD) ... LP
Because (France), 1970s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $28.99
Sweet electronic sounds from 70s France – pulled from a range of sources that include disco records, prog rock sets, sound library sessions, and even film soundtracks – all served up with a very cool, very cosmic sort of vibe! The French scene took its electronics differently than some of the other European scenes of the period – and often mixed in bits of keyboards or moog with more conventional instrumentation – or sometimes worked in an all-electronic mode, but with a warmth that was different than the colder sounds to come in the post-punk years! As a result, the music here is surprisingly soulful at times, and often nice and funky – while still having some of the edgier modes you might expect from soundtracks or spacier records of the period. The range of talents here is wonderful – and this second volume in the series might be even more revelatory than the first – with tracks that include "Young Freedom" by Francis Lai, "Mouvement Decompose D'Un Coup De Marteau" by Pascal Comelade, "Moonshine" by Stereo, "Cristal No 3" by Moon Birds, "Indian Love Melody" by Georges Rodi, "Grand Prix" by Grand Prix, "Vadrouillard 3" by Roger Roger, "Main Theme From More" by Rosebud, "Signaux Codes Non Identifes" by Michel Magne, "Love Is All" by Pierre Porte, "Pepper Box" by The Peppers, "Ruitor" by Richard Pinhas, "Monkey Star" by Arpady's, "Les Soucoupes Volantes Vertes" by Heldon, and "Take A Chance (rmx inst)" by Queen Samantha. Weird and wild garage tracks from the mid 60s – but work that's usually got a feel that's a lot different than more familiar sounds from the time! Lots of these tunes are from weird, offbeat sources – some overseas, but still mostly American – but produced by artists who have a very personal, offbeat vibe – with lots of strange echoes of styles that are quite far from the mainstream. Plus, we've never seen any of these tracks before – and the package is way different than the usual collection of this nature. ✨✧ Harold Melvin & The Blue NotesBlue Album ... LP
Source/Demon (UK), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Surprisingly great post-Philly International work from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes – recorded at a time when the group had actually let a female singer into their ranks! Sharon Paige is the lady here – and she creates a nice sense of interplay with the male singers in the group – that sort of back and forth that you might find in some of Al Hudson's work with One Way, or in a variety of other funky club acts who were rising in the mainstream at the time. Harold Melvin produced, and there's some definite late Philly moments in the tracks "Prayin" and "Baby I'm Back" – but the greatest charm of the album possibly comes from tracks that change things up a bit, including "I Should Be Your Lover", "Tonight's The Night", and "Your Love Is Taking Me On A Journey". Strut (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Sweet soul from the Hawaii scene of the 70s – a surprisingly strong source of well-crafted, warmly-produced grooves – all with a special sort of sparkle that reminds us a lot of the best Bay Area or LA sounds of the time! There's a sunny vibe to the music that really belies its roots – a blend of jazz, soul, funk, and more – all handled with production that's few notches down from the slicker AOR material of the period, which still lets all the more soulful currents shine through nicely – and which keeps all this stuff from ever sounding too commercial. Given the cultural cross-currents taking place on the islands at the time, there's a surprising mix of backgrounds to some of these groups – which results in a unique sound that's nicely colorblind, and which stands as a bit of a contrast to some of the more defined scenes on the mainland. As always with Strut Records, the track selection and presentation is wonderful – with plenty of notes that illuminate the music – and titles include "Sparkle" by Greenwood, "Get That Happy Feeling" by Lemuria, "Countryside Beauty" by Tender Leaf, "Yesterday's Love" by Aura, "Kawaihae" by Brother Noland, "Feel Like Getting Down" by Nova, "Love One Another" by Mike Lundy, "Coast To Coast" by Rockwell Fukino, and "Call Me" by Hal Bradbury. ✨✧ Alain PierreO Sidarta (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two amazing works from Belgian electronic genius Alain Pierre – both appearing in this form for the first time ever! Side one features 11 minutes of continuous music that Pierre created for the short film O Sidarta – music that mixes a range of electronics, keyboards, and acoustic percussion with studio effects and voice – all with a result that almost feels like some of the longer-form prog creations of the German scene of the time – although with qualities that are much more varied, less rock-based, and with occasional nods to the earlier generation of musique concrete! The flipside features the 17 minute "Notions De Physique Intererieure" – a work that uses a wide array of electric sources in a very short space – theremin, Arp sequencer, Telefunken echomixer, and more Arp, Kort, and Oberheim keyboards – all in this slow-building, wonderfully spacey sort of mode – almost hinting at some of the straighter fantasy soundtracks that Pierre would create in the mainstream – as the piece has the feel of a story in sound! ✨✧ Denny Zeitlin & George MarshTelepathy ... CD
Sunnyside, 2021. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Really great sounds from the legendary Denny Zeitlin – an entry in his series of electro-acoustic improvisations with drummer George Marsh – and a record that has Zeitlin on a range of keyboards and electronics, in addition to his more familiar acoustic piano! It's that instrument which first brought Denny attention in the 60s, but over the years, he's also developed a surprisingly strong ear for electric sources – often using them in very different ways, sounding especially great in the freer setting of duo improvisations like these! George handles a bit of percussion, but mostly makes his main magic on the drum kit – and titles include "The Ascent", "Fillmore Dreams", "Hadron Collider", "Disagree To Agree", "Quicksilver", "Hatching", and "Black Hole".
