Mahavishnu OrchestraApocalypse ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Near Mint- ... $5.99
A big change of sorts for Mahavishnu Orchestra – a record that has the group actually acting like the larger ensemble promised in their name! Although their first few efforts were smaller combo affairs, this set has the group completely transformed – with only John McLaughlin's guitar remaining from the original lineup – joined by a host of other jazz and orchestra players – including Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin, bringing in a much more spacey sound than before, and Narada Michael Walden on drums, percussion, and a bit of vocals. The sound's often less jamming than the power-fusion of the group's start – and much more in the meditative space you'd guess from their name – although still with a good degree of jazz influences as well. Mike Gibbs did the orchestrations, and Michael Tilson Thomas conducts – and titles include "Power Of Love", "Hymn To Him", "Wings Of Karma", and "Smile Of The Beyond". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Mahavishnu OrchestraBirds Of Fire ... LP
Columbia, 1972. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A great second album from Mahavishnu Orchestra – one that has them still very might in the same tight formation as the first! As before, there's a heck of a lot of power here – monstrous work on drums from Billy Cobham, sharp-edged guitar from John McLaughlin, and a range of great keyboards from Jan Hammer – all played without the cliche of his later years! The group's completed by the surprisingly great electric violin of Jerry Goodman and the bass of Rick Laird – and the tunes nicely blend a few more contemplative moments with full-on, rock-inspired fusion jamming. Titles include "Miles Beyond", "One Word", "Sanctuary", "Open Country Joy", "Resolution", "Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love", and "Thousand Island Park". LP, Vinyl record album
(In the textured cover.)

✨✧ Mahavishnu OrchestraVisions Of The Emerald Beyond ... LP
Columbia, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Very spacey work from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a set that continues the change in sound explored by the second incarnation of the group – one that's much more spacious than the first! The group here is somewhat large, but often comes off with a good sense of leanness at times – less of the notes-on-notes jams of rockish fusion, and more stretched-out spiritual modes, mixed with a slight dose of funk at just the right moments! John McLaughlin's in the lead on guitar, and other players include Gayle Moran on keyboards, Jean-Luc Ponty on electric violin, and Narada Michael Waldon on drums, percussion, clavinet, and vocals. Titles include "Eternity's Breath", "Lile's Dance", "Can't Stand Your Funk", "Earth Ship", "Be Happy", "Opus 1", and "Pegasus". LP, Vinyl record album
(Cover has light wear.)

✨✧ Mahavishnu OrchestraInner Mounting Flame ... LP
Columbia, 1971. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
A massive set of fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra – a group that features some incredible guitar work from John McLaughlin, who sounds even more focused and driven here than on his own records! As with Return To Forever or Weather Report, the combo's a supergroup of sorts – with Billy Cobham on drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards, Jerry Goodman on violin, and Rick Laird on bass – all wailing with great intensity on some of the best numbers – a lot more energy than you might expect from their slightly more meditative name! Titles include "Meeting Of The Spirits", "Dawn", "The Noonward Race", "A Lotus On Irish Streams", and "Vital Transformation". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a mark that clicks a bit on "Meeting Of The Spirits". Cover has some ring & edge wear.)
