✨✧ Lalo SchifrinMagnum Force – The Original Score ... CD
Aleph, 1973. Used ... $11.99
Pure 70s genius from Lalo Schifrin – and the lost soundtrack to the second Dirty Harry film! Magnum Force never received a proper soundtrack album at the time – and although we've waited over 30 years, this overstuffed package finally gives the Schifrin score it's due – serving up a great variety of short tunes that fully illustrated the musical genius that made the Dirty Harry films so great. The set's got a total of 22 tracks in all – and goes way beyond the Dirty Harry Anthology sets to include some of the darker, moodier numbers from Magnum Force – some great shorter tunes that sit nicely next to the more famous funky themes! Titles include "Warm Enough", "Last Dance In Sausalito", "Early Is Late", "Briggs", "Magnum Force", "Stakeout", "Execution Squad", "The Bullet", "Potrero Hill", "The Faceless Assassin", "The Crooks", and "Harry's Ostinato". ✨✧ Jimi Tenor & UmoMysterium Magnum ... CD
Herakles (Finland), 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Heavenly sounds from the great Jimi Tenor – a Finnish talent who once specialized in cold, calculated sounds – but one who's really opened into some spiritual, soulful territory in the past decade or so! This album wonderfully continues Jimi's great shift – and features his own work on tenor and flute with this very cool larger group that moves with energy that's somewhere between Sun Ra's Arkestra and some of the hipper groups of the 70s Ethiopian scene – awash in all the exotic elements that you'd expect from both references, but also showing a real maturation in Tenor's musical vision too – so that some passages have these sublime soulful arrangements we never would have expected a few years before! Unlike other contemporary projects of this nature, the album's not just a rehash of older 70s spiritual jazz modes – and instead really reflects the continuing elevation of Tenor's talents as the years go on. Titles include "Ghost Warrior", "Blue Ural", "Koneen Sydan", "I Was Here", "Kratera", "Kollaasi", and "Naulamatto". CD

✨✧ Minnie RipertonOnly When I'm Dreaming (aka Come To My Garden) ... CD
TKO Magnum (UK), 1970. Used ... Just Sold Out!
The album, Minnie Riperton's first, is sort of an arch-baroque suite of floating shimmering soulful tracks that get this crazy over the top Bacharach & David production from our favorite arranger of all time – Charles Stepney. This is somewhere in between Scott Walker's 3rd album and Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On, with a little bit of classic A&M production. The whole thing's genius, and is one of the landmarks of the Chicago soul recording scene of the 60's & 70's. With the cuts "Les Fleur", "Only When I'm Dreaming", "Rainy Day In Centerville", and "Oh, By The Way". We never stop listening to this one – and it's one of the most god-like albums of all time! CD

Eric AlexanderGentle Ballads (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Richie BeirachWhat Is This Thing Called Love (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1999. New Copy ... $56.99
Richie Beirach swings nicely on some of this set, but also manages to kick back a bit on a few ballads too – dropping out of the heavier rhythm on the swingers from George Mraz on bass and Billy Hart on drums – to hit some mellower modes that really show off the sensitive side of his playing! The balance is great, and the record's the sort that makes us appreciate Beirach even more than before – a great reminder of his talents, on tracks that include "Night & Day", "Goodbye", "Autumn Leaves", "On Green Dolphin Street", "What Is This Thing Called Love", and "Nardis". Bill CharlapS'Wonderful (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
S'Wonderful music from pianist Bill Charlap – especially considering that he's got the Washington brothers along to help him on rhythm! For years now, we've always looked out for sessions that feature the talents of Peter Washington on bass and Kenny Washington on drums – as either of them can always assure a subtle, soulful swing – and when working together, on a date like this, the results are even better! Charlap starts out a number of tunes in fluid, open space of his own – solo obligattos that begin the numbers, before the Washingtons come in and swing things a bit more, even though the album still mostly hangs back in a ballad style. Titles include "Isfahan", "Lover", "Only The Lonely", "Time After Time", and "The Blue Room". LP, Vinyl record album

Andrew CyrilleOde To The Living Tree (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1994. New Copy ... $59.99
Pure genius from Andrew Cyrille – a record that's got a bit more of a soaring, spiritual vibe than some of his more freely improvised work of the past – a set that marks a key chapter in this stretch of the drummer's career, similar to his album on DIW at the same time! The group is excellent – with David Murray on tenor and bass clarinet, Oliver Lake on alto, Fred Hopkins on bass, and Steve Colson on electric piano – stretching out on long tracks that are filled with modal changes! The album includes a very nice 20 minute remake of "A Love Supreme", plus the originals "Ode To The Living Tree" and "So That Life Can Endure". LP, Vinyl record album

Eddie Higgins TrioHaunted Heart (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1997. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
Part of the late 90s rise to genius from pianist Eddie Higgins – a set of simple, lyrical beauty that really holds up well over the years – one of those classics that were cut away from the age of the classics – the sort of record that Eddie should have been making many decades back, although we're more than happy he reached this point later in his career! The trio here features Ben Riley on drums and Ray Drummond on bass, a really great rhythm compliment to Higgins' work on piano – and titles include "Stolen Moments/Israel", "My Funny Valentine", "Lover Come Back To Me", "Haunted Heart", "Lush Life", "Isn't It Romantic", and "I Should Care". Steve KuhnLove Walked In (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 1998. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
There's plenty of love in the tones of Steve Kuhn's piano here – that deeply expressive sound that we first came to love in his earliest years, matured beautifully in the subtle setting of a straight trio date like this – with help from Buster Williams on bass and Bill Stewart on drums! The title's a standard, but the record's hardly a rehash of too-familiar tunes – and instead, Kuhn unlocks most of the songs with a fresh look at their structures, and some really inventive work on piano during his solos. Titles include "Sunny", "Love Walked In", "Autumn Leaves", "You've Changed", "No Problem", and "Land Of The Living Dead". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Ray Davies & The Button Down BrassThemes From The Exorcist, The French Connection, The Sting, & Other Great Films/Flashpoint (SACD multi-channel disc) ... CD
Pye/Vocalion (UK), 1974/1975. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Two great albums from Ray "funky trumpet" Davies – not the lead singer of The Kinks, but a heck of a groovy British bandleader from the 70s! First up is an album of Themes From The Exorcist and other films – all familiar movie themes from the early 70s, penned by artists like Michel Legrand and Lalo Schifrin – but served up here by Ray's Button Down Brass in a very cool style – compressed funk, ala the best crime/cop modes of the time – but with lots of individual touches that make the songs very different than the original versions! Titles include "Point Blank", "Enter The Dragon", "Klute", "French Connection", "Tubular Bells", "Cops & Robbers", and "Beyond Tomorrow". Flashpoint continues with some great film themes again served up in the magic Ray Davies mode – a funky big band approach that makes the record every bit as compelling as the American Cop Shows album from Henry Mancini – but maybe groovier, too. Titles include "Kojak", "Big Boss", "Man With The Golden Gun", "Mr Majestyk", "Magnum Force", "Fist Of Fury", and "Airport 1975". CD

✨✧ Eddie HigginsIf Dreams Come True (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Warm, late nite work from the Eddie Higgins trio – that great 90s lineup that features Eddie on piano, Jay Leonhart on bass, and Joe Ascione on drums! It's hard to adequately get at the genius of these guys together in words – as their power is somewhat subtle, but damn effective – a way better sound than we might have ever expected from Eddie many years back, and the kind of a record that's really got us renewing our look at his talents! Higgins is both bold and sensitive on the set – masterful on the keys, yet quite unassuming as well – hard to peg adequately, but just the sort of strength that more than justifies all the tape the Venus Records label have spun on him in recent years. Titles include "If Dreams Come True", "Summertime", "It's All Right With Me", "Weekend In Havana", "Into The Memory", and "Minor Swing". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Bunny Lee & OthersDreads Enter The Gates With Praise – The Mighty Striker Shoots The Hits ... CD
Soul Jazz (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic tribute to the studio genius of Bunny Lee – and a set that's filled with the kind of tracks that may well knock Lee Scratch Perry right out of the spotlight! Bunny already had a long and varied career in Jamaican music by the time of these tracks – hustling things up right from a grass roots level, then rising to prominence as a producer with a huge amount of inventive new techniques – including the flying cymbal rhythm sound, which was a great balance to some of the deeper, murkier elements in his grooves! These cuts are from a time when Bunny was working together with a host of fantastic singers, many of whom were inspired by the new more righteous modes that were coming into play at the time – opening up with deeper messages, and equally deep performances – in an array of tracks here that still have a tremendous amount of power, even after the space of decades – thanks in part to superb backings by The Aggrovators. The choice of tracks is wonderful, and the whole thing's put together with the usual stellar handling by Soul Jazz – with titles that include "Enter Into His Gates With Praise" by Johnny Clarke, "So Jah Se Dub" by The Aggrovators, "Magnum Force" by Vin Gordon & The Aggrovators, "Real Born African" by Jah Stitch, "King Tubby Dub" by King Tubby meets Tommy McCook & The Aggrovators, "Check Sister Jane" by Dillinger, "The Wormer" by Prince Jazzbo, "You Don't Care For Me" by The Uniques, "Natty Dread Have Ambition" by Shorty The President, "A Land Far Away" by Gene Rondo, "You Should Be Thankful" by Mighty Diamonds, "Marvelous Rocker" by Winston Wright, and "Principle & Dignity" by Jah Youth.
