✨✧ Archie SheppMagic Of Ju-Ju (SHMCD pressing) ... CD
Impulse/Universal (Japan), 1967. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Beautifully balanced 60s work from Archie Shepp – a record that mixes newer freedoms with sharper vision – all wrapped up with some wonderfully intense solo work! As with some of Shepp's other great dates for Impulse at the time, the group's a largeish one – a nonet of players who are arranged tightly at some moments, but set loose on their own at others – in a style that many other leaders would copy in years to come, but never really match as strongly! Trumpet is by Martin Banks and Michael Zwerin, the latter of whom also plays trombone – and other players include Reggie Workman on bass, Beaver Harris and Norman Connors on drums, and added percussion from Ed Blackwell, Frank Charles, and Dennis Charles. Shepp wrote all titles for the date – and there's a great mixture of soulful undercurrents and more angular modern edges in every tune. Titles include "The Magic Of Ju Ju", "You're What This Day Is All About", "Shazam", and "Sorry 'Bout That". CD

Art BlakeyMosaic ... CD
Blue Note, 1961. Used ... $5.99
An explosive session from an expanded edition of the Jazz Messengers – recorded at a key point when Art Blakey moved the group up to six members instead of five! Although bigger than the group on most Jazz Messenger Blue Notes, the sextet have an energy that's almost tighter – a sense of poise, focus, and vision that's not just driven by Blakey's drum kit alone – but by the kind of unique magic that only happens during rare groupings in classic jazz. A key part of the energy here comes from pianist Cedar Walton – who's replacing the Bobby Timmons soul jazz mode with a sound that's a bit more expansive and visionary. But equally important is the three horn lineup of Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Curtis Fuller on trombone, and Wayne Shorter on tenor – a two-brass frontline that's used far differently than other groups – bold one minute, but personal and sensitive the next. There's a mixture of warmth and driving energy here that's simply incredible – a prime example of Blakey taking things to the next level, when it would have been easy enough for him to sit on his laurels and keep doing the same thing over and over again! Includes classic readings of Cedar Walton's "Mosaic", Freddie Hubbard's "Crisis", and Curtis Fuller's "Arabia" – as well as Shorter's excellent "Children Of The Night". CD
(Out of print, thin cutout through case spine.)

Barney WilenFrench Ballads (with bonus tracks) ... CD
IDA/Elemental, 1987. New Copy ... $14.99 15.99
Pure magic from saxophonist Barney Wilen – captured here at a point when his powers were really back in full force, and when he seemed to be at his most soulful when handling a gentle, easygoing sort of tune! The ballads in the title are definitely out in full force – served up in a mixture of famous French melodies, past and present – so that older postwar melodies are mixed with more contemporary moments from Michel Legrand – with a lyrical vibe that's really emphasized by the superb work on piano for the set by Michel Grallier! The rest of the group is great, too – and players include Sangoma Everett on drums, and Riccardo Del Fra on bass – the last of whom you might know from some fantastic albums with Chet Baker in later years. Wilen blows tenor and a bit of soprano – and titles include "L'Ame Des Poets", "Une Ete 42", "My Way", "Once Upon A Time", "Sous Le Ciel De Paris", "Syracuse", and "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life". CD features new mastering, and four bonus tracks – alternate takes of tunes on the album! CD

✨✧ Rodrigo AmadoLet The Free Be Men ... CD
Trost (Austria), 2021. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set with two strong horn players upfront – but one that draws some equally fantastic energy from the bottom end of the group too – thanks to wonderful contributions from Kent Kessler on bass and Chris Corsano on drums! The musical qualities of tenorist Rodrigo Amado seem to just deepen more and more with each new release – there's a sense of soul here we might not have heard this strongly a few years before, one that really matches the work on the record from Joe McPhee – who blows soprano sax, pocket trumpet, and even a bit of pvc pipe – the last with that special sort of magic that's continued to make Joe such a vibrant player over the years. But we're also equally moved here by the basswork of Kent Kessler – who's got this way of matching his strengths with openness, at a level that's really echoed by the drums of Corsano – a mixture of boldness and sensitivity that's really wonderful. All tracks are long improvisations, recorded in Copehagen – and titles include "Resist", "Let The Free Be Men", "Never Surrender", and "Men Is Woman Is Man". CD

✨✧ Richie HavensRichard P Havens 1983 ... CD
Verve/Floating World (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic testament to the far-reaching genius of the young Richie Havens – a double-length set that makes full use of its expanded space to really offer up so many different slices of Havens special sort of magic on the late 60s scene! There's a mixture of live and studio tracks on the set, and gentler numbers mixed with more expansive modes – served up with a host of varied guest performers who really keep things interesting. The lineup includes Colin Walcott on sitar, Warren Bernhardt on keyboards, Weldon Myrick on steel guitar, and Jeremy Steig on flute – all hip cats on their own, really expanding the vibe of this record in a wonderful way. Havens has plenty of great arrangements on the record, in addition to his excellent work on guitar and raspily charming vocals – and titles include his classic "Indian Rope Man", plus "I Pity The Poor Immigrant", "Lady Madonna", "Stop Pulling & Pushing", "Putting Out The Vibration & Hoping It Comes Home", "Cautiously", "The Parable Of Ramon", "Priests", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "For Haven's Sake", "Wear Your Love Like Heaven", and "Run Shaker Life/Do You Feel Good". ✨✧ Al HirtAl Hirt Plays Bert Kaempfert/Latin In The Horn ... CD
RCA/Vocalion (UK), 1966/1968. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A pair of groovy groovy records from trumpeter Al Hirt! Hirt Plays Bert has Al Hirt taking on the music of German easy maestro Bert Kaempfert – working strongly with this cool syncopated electric bass at the bottom – which creates the same sort of stepping grooves you'd hear in Bert's music! Most tunes are numbers made into instrumental hits by Kaempfert, but given a more expressive Hirt flourish in the lead trumpet – and titles include "Swingin Safari", "Red Roses For A Blue Lady", "Spanish Eyes", "Magic Trumpet", "Afrikaan Beat", and "Strangers In The Night". Latin In The Horn is one of the grooviest albums ever from trumpeter Al Hirt – thanks to some great arrangements from Lalo Schifrin! The "Latin" in the horn is a bit subdued here – not as firey as the title might make you think, but with a majestic, noble sound – one that has Al blowing a mixture of Brazilian and Spanish themes in a slightly dramatic way, underpinned by groovy Schifrin arrangements that have the sweeping feel of his cinematic work of the 60s! There's less bossa than you might expect, but the setting is still pretty darn great – and the Latin themes really take Hirt past his usual hoke of the time. Titles include "Manha De Carnival", "Taboo", "Baia", "Gringo A Go Go", "A Sky Without Stars", "Be True To Me", and "Desafinado". CD

✨✧ Diego RiveraLove & Peace ... CD
Posi-Tone, 2023. Used ... Out Of Stock
Diego Rivera has a very classic look on the cover – and the record comes across with a very classic vibe as well – back to the days of Sonny Stitt or Hank Mobley, when a top-shelf saxophonist set up in a quartet was more than enough to make some really special magic on record! That's definitely the case here – as Rivera blows both tenor and soprano with a mixture of deeper tones and lighter colors, in a voice that's very much his own – mostly on shorter original tracks, save for one take on a John Coltrane number that stretches out nice and long. The compactness is key to the sound, as Diego packs a heck of a lot into the three to five minute space of most tracks – working with a great rhythm trio that features Art Hirihara on piano, Boris Kozlov on bass, and Rudy Royston on drums. Titles include the originals "Ganas", "Soul Purpose", "Anticipation", "Composure", "Simon", "La Malinche", and "Battle Fatigue" – plus a nice take on "Alabama". CD

✨✧ Jill ScottWho Is Jill Scott? ... CD
Epic/Hidden Beach, 2000. Used ... Out Of Stock
The incredible debut of the mighty Jill Scott – a record that asks and answers a question with the title – then goes on to not only establish Jill as one of the freshest soul music talents of her generation, but also an artist who set the tone for so many others to follow! The record explodes out of the Philly scene with a mixture of underground soul and hip hop production elements – echoing classic modes, yet instantly present too – in a way that still sounds fresher than most of the copycat records that came in its wake – and a good deal of records that preceded it too. Jill scores big with a totally seductive blend of warm instrumentation, subdued funky beats, and immensely captivating soul vocals – and the whole record is awash in Fender Rhodes, giving it a spacey soul sound that will make the record a classic for years to come! Titles include "The Way", "Do You Remember", "Long Rain", "Love Rain", "Honey Molasses", "Slowly Surely", "Watching Me", "One Is The Magic #", and "He Loves Me" – but it's allllll good! The LP includes a remix of "Love Rain" featuring Mos Def! CD

CTI, 1971. Used ... Out Of Stock
A groundbreaking record from flautist Hubert Laws – a mixture of classical themes and jazz, handled with an airy CTI approach – and set to arrangements by Don Sebesky that are simply mindblowing! The album's a wonderful example of the way that CTI really pushed the boundaries of instrumental expression in the 70s – taking Laws wonderfully breathy work on flute, and mixing it with some well-crafted backings that also feature electric piano by Bob James, bass by Ron Carter, and percussion by Airto and Jack DeJohnette. The larger group is handled by Sebesky, who really brings some magic to the record – a sense of sound, space, and timing that's still a heck of a lot more mature and sophisticated than most instrumental recordings coming out today! Titles include "Syrinx", "Rite Of Spring", "Brandenburg Concerto No 3", and "Pavane". CD
