✨✧ Alfredo LinaresAlfredo Linares Y Su Sonora Vol 1 – The Mag Years (3 x 7 inch singles) ... 7-inch
Mag/Rocafort (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3 x 7 inch singles ... $28.99 34.99
Killer cuts from Alfredo Linares – a Peruvian pianist of the 60s, but one who works here in a groove that rivals some of the best New York material from Charlie Palmieri at the time! The set brings together six hard-hamming tracks from Alfredo's recordings for the Mag Records label in his homeland – and the music is a blend of Latin jazz and boogaloo – all tracks that are burning with lots of heavy percussion, and driven on strongly by the bold work of Linares on the keys! Titles include "Cool", "El Pito", "Descarga", "Yo Traigo Boogaloo", "Sin Tu Querer", and "Tutu Tata". 7-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Alfredo Linares Y Su SonoraYo Traigo Boogaloo (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A killer Latin set from late 60s Peru – one of those mighty Latin cookers from the Mag Records label – a small imprint that never got much circulation up here in the states, but which was clearly tuned in to the best modes from New York! Alfredo Linares is a real cooker on the piano – as fierce and fast as any of the uptown scene up north – and the album's got a few boogaloo slammers mixed with other great guaguanco grooves – on titles that include "Yo Traigo Boogaloo", "Boogaloo En Ambiente", "Como Yo No Hay Dos", "Peruvian Guaguanco", "Congalanque", "Linares Blues", "Tutu Tata", "Sabor Tropical", and "Probandolo Se Sabe". ✨✧ Al ValdezGozando (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), Mid 60s. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A complete killer from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – a set that shows just how special it is when the leadoff descarga track breaks into a searing saxophone solo within the first few seconds! Things don't let up after that – and Al Valdez keeps things moving and grooving at a level that rivals the best of the New York scene of the time – but maybe even more amazing given that he was working in a much smaller setting down south in Lima! Every track is a gem, and the record is rock-solid throughout, with excellent piano, percussion, and just the right use of horns – on titles that include "Dame Tu Carino", "Aprieta", "Guajira Guantanamera", "Tabaquera", "El Columpio", "Pachanga Se Baila Asi", "Que Rico Sabor", and the smoking title cut "Gozando". A moving tribute to the late, great Serge Gainsbourg – served up in a mix of film and songs from his famous partner Jane Birkin! The set features a DVD directed by Jane – a 40 minute documentary filled with private images of Serge, laid out in a very loving tribute – and it's packaged with 2CDs' worth of music recorded with Serge in duet, or with lots of Gainsbourg help as both a writer or producer. Includes a rare alternate take of "Jane B" from 1968, plus "Rocking Chair", "Nicotine", "Exercice En Forme De Z", "Yesterday Yes A Day", "Ex Fan Des Sixties", "Di Doo Dah", "La Decadanse", "Baby Lou", "Quoi", "Et Quand Bien Meme", "Raccrochez C'Est Une Horreur", and lots more – including live versions of "Un Chose Entre Autres" and "Ces Petitis Riens" – and the song "La Gadoue" done with Les Negresses Vertes. Black Seeds/Sound TrekUnited States Army Special Services Agency Europe Presents The Winners Of The Second Annual Original Magnificent Special Services ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $3.99 14.98
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. Blue MagicFrom Out Of The Blue ... LP
OBR/Columbia, 1989. Very Good+ ... $6.99
Quite a different sound than usual for Blue Magic – but quite nice too! This album's an obscure effort from the end of the 80s – recorded years after the group's initial hits in the 70s, but still with some tremendous harmonies that are very much at the top of their game! The set was done in collaboration with Rush Management, and has that bottom-beat slowjam feel that mellower soul often had at the time – but even such a mode can't stop the group from being great, as their vocals really sparkle and soar, regardless of the setting! There's a sweetness here that few other groups were showing at the time – that heartbreaking quality that always made a Blue Magic ballad so great, and which is amazingly still preserved here. Titles include "Secret Lover", "From Out Of The Blue", "Romeo & Juliet", "The More I Get", "Tuesday Heartbreak", "It's Like Magic", "We Ain't New To This", and "There's A Song In My Head". LP, Vinyl record album

Blue MagicShare A Dream ... CD
Society Hill, 2020. Used ... $9.99
New work from a revived version of Blue Magic – that legendary 70s group who were one of the best on the Philly scene of the time – still sounding great here in a more contemporary set! The album's headed up by producer Butch Ingram – with backing by the whole Ingram Family – and like some of the recent Ingram projects on Society Hill, the record does a great job of both going back into deep Philly soul roots, and adding a few slight contemporary touches – never too many to ruin the old school modes, but just the right dash to keep the record from sounding like a copycat of the old days. Tunes include new material penned by the Ingrams and Barbara Mason – and titles include "I Can Show You Love", "I Can Want You", "I've Got My Heart Set On You", "Hurting", "Your Spell Stayed On My Mind", "On A Crowded Street", and "Seasons For Love". Blues MagoosGulf Coast Bound (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
ABC/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
Amazing work from the Blues Magoos – stretching way beyond their roots as a garage rock band! The album's free, open, with a really jazzy style that shows that these guys had been soaking up plenty of influences from the left end of the singer/songwriter spectrum – and had also been spending a lot of time learning how to play their instruments! At one level, the album's chock-a-block with hip tunes that veer into blue eyed soul territory – and at another, it's got some jazzy inflections that move into the mind-expanding territory reached by a rare few other rock/soul groups of the time. Percussion is wonderful on the set, and Pee Wee Ellis plays a lot of great sax on the set – and the real treat is excessive use of vibes, which makes for some cool sounds on a number of tracks. Includes the long groover "Can't Get Enough Of You", which features a great percussion breakdown in the middle – plus "Gulf Coast Bound", "Sea Breeze Express", "Magoo's Blues", "Tonight The Sky's About To Cry", and "Slow Down Sundown". Blues MagoosPsychedelic Lollipop ... LP
Mercury, 1966. Near Mint- ... $38.99
Brilliant garage psych from Blues Magoos – a group that's raw and punchy enough to pummel, but pulled off some sweeter numbers and lighter harmonies incredibly well! Walloping drums, excitable vocals and wailing organ grooves – the cracked the charts, but still bring a fully charged proto punk vibe. Totally excellent, the kind of thing we wish were staples of oldies radio, but for whatever reason are left to deeper rock diggers to discover all these years later. Includes "Sometimes I Think About", "Love Seems Doomed", "Worried Life Blues", "Tobacco Road", "One By One" and "I'll Go Crazy". LP, Vinyl record album

Robertinho BrantFilme Imaginario ... CD
Sonhos & Sons (Brazil), 2007. Used ... $8.99
The first album in many years from Robertinho Brant – and a really evocative little set, one that more than lives up to its title! There's definitely a soundtrack sort of quality to the tunes, even though most of them are vocal numbers – and they work like little snapshots of life, put together in a way that's got some of the same lightly poetic touches of the Minas Geraes generation – echoes of the work of Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges, with possibly a touch of Edu Lobo in the arranging style as well. Backings often mix a bit of electric and acoustic instrumentation, yet never in ways that are too slick or overproduced – and Brant's breathy presentation of the lyrics really fits the mood of the set. Titles include "Da Mesma Estrela", "Sinal De Paz", "Noite Azul", "Una Mujer", "Luz Da Manha", "Os Sonhadores", and "Pobre Planeta", which features Seu Jorge. CD

Johnny BristolMGM Collection (Hang On In There Baby/Feeling The Magic) (limited edition with bonus track) ... CD
MGM/Hip-O Select, 1974/1975. Used ... $28.99
Under-discovered 70s soul genius from Johnny Bristol – an artist who's best known for his early work in the Motown studios, but who steps out here as an incredible soul singer in his own right! Johnny's work here has an undeniably funky quality – a full, rich groove that blends together soaring strings and tighter rhythms – almost taking a cue from the blacksploitation soundtracks of the time, but focusing that groove into some really tight soul tracks – sung with a voice that should have made him huge! There's a great blend here of the rough and the smooth – and the style's almost like mixing together Barry White and Sam Dees – with the full funky arrangements of the former, and all the great songwriting and vocal delivery of the latter. The CD features the full tracks from 2 albums – Feeling The Magic and Hang On In There Baby – plus a rare single-only version of "Hang On In There Baby", sung by Bristol with Alton McClain. Other titles include "Go On & Dream", "Hang On In There Baby", "Woman Woman", "Lusty Lady", "I'm Just A Loser", "I Got Your Number", "It Don't Hurt No More", "Love Me For A Reason", and "I Wouldn't Change A Thing". Peter Brotzmann Chicago TentetImages ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A fantastic testament to the genius of the transatlantic meeting that is the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet – a group that manages to bridge the sometimes-unwieldy modes of the improvising orchestra, and the energy of a smaller free jazz combo! All the players seem tied together perfectly – both at an emotional level, and a musical one – so that the combination of energy is way more than the sum of its mighty parts – a real accomplishment, given that the "parts" include Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Marts Gustafsson, and Mars Williams on reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. The set begins with a searing 37 minute piece dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg – Vandermark's "All Things Being Equal", which almost has a Mingus-like combination of structure and solo. "Images" follows, and is a more freewheeling piece – but completely wonderful too! CD

Two excellent funky cuts from Eric Burdon and War! You probably know "Spill The Wine" – the Latin-tinged tune that made all them a lot of money, and which still sounds surprisingly great today – but "Magic Mountain" is also another winner, with a heavy funky beat at the beginning, and a great chugging groove that's in the best low rider mode! 7-inch, Vinyl record

As before, Coultrain handles all the instrumentation and vocals himself – but in a hypnotic blend that sometimes makes it difficult to tell where the voice ends and other elements begin – done with lots of the familiar core elements you'd expect, but with an end sound that's very different, and very much Coultrain's own. Columbia, 1972. Very Good+ ... $9.99
A funky fusion classic – the second Columbia set from this killer group of all-star players! The style's like the first Dreams album – a bit rock-influenced at times, but filled with jazzy instrumentation by players who include Randy Brecker on trumpet, Michael Brecker on saxes, Don Grolnick on keyboards, and Billy Cobham on drums! Edward Vernon sings on most numbers, with a soulful style that's a bit of a change from usual work of this type – and the set's got a feel that's definitely in keeping with the odd Gahan Wilson cartoon on the front cover – familiar grooves, but a bit offbeat too, and very much in its own sort of space. Titles include "Here She Comes Now", "Imagine My Surprise", "Medicated Goo", "Don't Cry My Lady", "Just Be Ourselves", "Why Can't I Find A Home", and "Calico Baby". LP, Vinyl record album

Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Any record from pianist Orrin Evans is worth of attention – but this set might be worthy of a bit more, given that it features some really beautiful work from alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins – a player who's a perfect accompaniment for all the great ideas that Evans brings to his music! Immanuel's horn has all these sharp edges – currents that really set him apart from the rest, and make his voice known instantly when he appears on the tunes – often set up with those darkly rich lines that Evans can cast so well in a small group setting, which he does here on tunes penned both by himself and Wilkins. The pairing is wonderful – and balanced with work from Vicente Archer on bass and Bill Stewart on drums – on long, fresh tunes that include "Momma Loves", "MAT Matt", "Libra", "The Poor Fisherman", "Levels", and "Dave". Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". FoxFox Box (Fox/Tails Of Illusion/Blue Hotel/Images/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
GTO/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A great box collection of work from Fox– a group who recorded a handful of albums in the mid 70s, all with kind of a post-glam production style that makes all the instruments come together in this cool wash of sound, which also works perfectly for the vocals of the female lead singer – the enigmatic Noosha! The tunes are catchy, but nicely not entirely commercial – really well put-together in the studio, thanks to Kenny Young's production, who's also in the group on second guitar – bowing nicely to the strong talents of Herbie Armstrong – who handles the lead with a nicely condensed sound that works perfectly for the group's approach. There's a charm here that's hard to describe – lost material between the early 70s pop years and the smoothness of AOR, with some of the best qualities of both – served up here with enough studio work that will make you a Kenny Young fan forever – on three full albums, Fox, Tails Of Illusion, and Blue Hotel – plus the bonus Images selection of other tracks, and other bonus tracks too – 56 tracks in all, with a big booklet of notes! 678 Records (Netherlands), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99
An amazing package of rare work on Fender Rhodes – a 3CD set that brings together six full albums that were recorded in the 70s, but never saw the light of day until vinyl issued in recent years! Pianist Rob Franken is totally great – maybe one of the hippest cats on the Dutch scene of the 70s when it came to the Fender Rhodes! Rob's a master of the instrument here – playing it jazzily, but also with this open flow that's really wonderful – and which really makes the best use of the instrument's potential, and doesn't drown it in too much jamming, which could sometimes be the case with other European musicians who handled the instrument! Instead, Franken lets the space between the notes do as much as the notes themselves – which really keeps things soulful throughout – and although most of the cuts feature an augmented trio, sometimes with added percussion or keyboards – a few of the tracks feature Ferdinand Povel on flute and tenor, and Jiggs Whigham on trombone. But even without the horns, the keys are more than enough – as they step out and soar on a whopping 70 tracks in all – including a few bonus tracks too! CD

An amazing, unjustly obscure bit of southern funky soul – played with kind of a club oriented groove, and a strong nod towards middle-period Earth, Wind, & Fire – a far different vibe than a lot of the southern soul on the Malaco label! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in the mix – similar to other records from Hancock's Columbia label keyboardist contemporaries – like Rodney Franklin, Webster Lewis, or Charles Earland! All orchestrations are performed by Herbie on a host of keyboards and synthesizers, and just about every cut has vocals – from singers who include Sylvester, Gavin Christopher, and The Waters. But even with this soul component, Herbie still keeps things jazzy – using a good bit of keyboards to open up the tunes in the middle, and hitting hard on all numbers with that classic Hancock approach to funk! Titles include "Magic Number", "Tonight's The Night", "Everybody's Broke", "Help Yourself", and "Satisfied With Love". CD also features the bonus "Magic Number (disco mix)". CD

Warner, 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 21.99
One of the first classic hip hop movie soundtracks of the late 80s, and a motherlode of great cuts! As divisive, hard hitting and uncompromising as the movie was, the Colors soundtrack does a great job of delivering on the tone with Ice T's title track and theme some, a snapshot of mid-to-late 80s classic rap, funk from Rick James and more. A time capsule for sure, but with tracks that are vital to this day. Marley Marl produced the majority of these cuts, and this was the early days of the Cold Chillin/Warner alliance, and titles include "Paid In Full (7 minute Cold Cut remix)" by Eric B & Rakim, "Butcher Shop" by Kool G Rap, "Colors" by Ice T, "Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste" by M.C. Earl KlughEarl Klugh/Living Inside Your Love/Magic In Your Eyes ... CD
Blue Note/BGO (UK), 1976/1978. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A trio of Earl Klugh albums from the mid-to-late 70s – Earl Klugh, Living Inside Your Love and Magic In Your Eyes – in a 2CD set! Earl Klugh is the guitarists debut – a player whose sound went onto dominate late 70s fusion in a big big way! Klugh's clearly stepping here into a space allowed by George Benson at the time – a blend of jazz and R&B that's warmer and mellower than work previously done on Blue Note in the decade (or on CTI and Kudu for that matter) – one that's less focused on rhythm than it is on tone, and the kind of setting that allows Earl to shine wonderfully. There's a lot less of the cheesiness here that would hurt Klugh's later albums, and the overall presentation is nicely retrained – arranged by Dave Grusin at a time when he still knew how to bring a good deal of soul into a session, avoiding cliche and letting the soloist step forth unmarred. Other players include Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Grusin himself – and Klugh plays both electric and acoustic guitar, on tunes that include "Angelina", "Slippin In The Back Door", "Vonetta", "Waltz For Debby", and "Wind & The Sea". Living Inside Your Love is his second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". Magic In Your Eyes is another sweet early effort from Klugh, with the title track plus "Alicia", "Julie", "Rose Hips", "Cry A Little While", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" and more. CD

John LennonImagine ... LP
Apple, 1971. Very Good+ ... $39.99
Not the out there primal scream of Plastic Ono, and more of an impeccably produced, easy to love landmark from John Lennon! The title track, beautiful as it is, is so heavily ingrained into rock & roll myth making machine that it's become too easy to overlook how great most of the songs on the album are. It must be the most consistent of John's LPs post-Beatles, and it's just about as essential as they come. Co-produced by Phil Spector, yet it's often not as grandly orchestrated as a Wall Of Sound effort, and well tailored to Lennon's songs. Includes "Give Me Some Truth", "Oh My Love", "How Do You Sleep?", "Imagine", "Crippled Inside", "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier". LP, Vinyl record album

Way more than just batucada jazz – or even just straight bossa jazz too – and a set that bristles with some really creative energy all the way through! Percussion definitely has plenty to do with the record, but the reeds are pretty great too – handled by Lindgren, and apparently overdubbed in spots – in ways that have his saxes and flute cascading together with tight, complicated, Brazilian jazz-styled lines. Other instrumentation includes trombone, guitar, and bass – and titles include "Elbow Style", "Rio Shadow", "Soofa", "Farofa", "Djungledance", "Batucada Jazz", and "No More Words". CD

Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". ADC BandLong Stroke ... LP
Cotillion, 1978. Very Good- ... $2.99
ADC Band take a long stroke on the funky bass – borrowing all the best P-Funk elements from their Detroit counterparts – but also helping the music find a tighter, more focused groove too! ADC were a key part of that post-Parliament/Funkadelic generation who used George Clinton's best influences to find a new way of coming together – an approach to ensemble funk that may have taken it self more seriously than the P-Funk universe (especially in their earlier days) – but which also helped find a way to keep things going a lot longer at a time when George Clinton himself was flagging. The band are way sharper than the usual mainstream funk group of the time – and have that gritty, hard-working sound you'd expect from their image on the cover – and some soaring female vocals really help give their best songs a unique vibe. Titles include the Parliament tribute cut "Long Stroke" – plus "Fire Up", "Cause I Love You", "Baby Love", and "Just Another Song". LP, Vinyl record album

Lonehill (Spain), 1959/1960. Used ... $9.99
Early Quincy Jones jazz tunes – played by a legendary crew of musicians – led in separate spots by Benny Bailey, Nat Adderly, Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Thompson and Toots Thielemans! The tunes are from the Late 50s/early 60s era when young Quincy was being groomed to be another Duke Ellington (boy, if the world only knew!) The sessions were cut in Sweden with a rotation of Swedish players, plus American Joe Harris on drums on some tracks – and some of the work originally appeared on a Benny Bailey album for Argo, as well as on a Roy Haynes set for Mercury. The material is a batch of mostly clean-toned, bop-learned jazz, with some leisurely paced bluesy arrangements in spots. Tracks include "The Golden Touch", "Jones Beach", "Tiem Midnight Sun Never Sets", "Fallen Feathers", "Sister Sadie", "On The Sunny Side Of The Street", "That Old Black Magic", "I Remember You" and more. Classic guitar highlife music from Ghana! Guitarist Eric Agyeman helped revive the moribund style, reinventing with the electric guitar and injecting some of the liquid magic of Congolese rumba. Beginning in the early 60s he worked with a bevy of great bands, including Dr. K. Gyasi & His Noble Kings and the mighty A.B. Crentsil & the Sweet Talks. Crentsil and Agyaaku – another of the great vocalists of the modern highlife era – sit in on lead vocals for one track each, leaving the lion's share of the vocals to Thomas Frempong – who contributes one of the most killing tracks to the great Ghana Soundz collection – who handles them with soul and grace. Agyeman's fluid guitar here contributes some sublime solos, but the real treat is the stellar rhythm work. A wonderfully intimate set from pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi – quite different than her bigger band records of the 70s, but equally great in its own way! The album's a great throwback to the earliest days of Akiyoshi on record – as it has the pianist really opening up in a trio setting, but with even more confidence and imagination than in the 50s and 60s – no Bud Powell burning here, but some really beautiful, lyrical passages that really leave us breathless – and almost bring into sharper focus some of the ideas she'd explored in her big band. Backing is by Monty Budwig on bass and Jake Hanna on drums – and titles include "Warning Success May Be Hazardous To Your Health", "American Ballad", "Solvejg's Song", "You Go To My Head", and "Count Your Blessings". That's a Texas image on the cover, which is pretty fitting for the sound of Alamo – as they've got a really heady brew of psych, hard rock, and southern elements – all forged together with a sound that would have been right at home on early 70s Capricorn Records! The group are part of that wave of artists who grew up in the shaggier side of the garage and psych undergrounds of the late 60s, then moved forward with a fuller, more carefully conceived sound – captured here beautifully in sessions recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, which really illuminate all their great work on guitar and organ, while still keeping things very lean overall. Ken Woodley handles the vocals and keys, Larry Raspberry the guitar – and titles include "Get The Feelin", "Question Raised", "The World We Seek", "Soft & Gentle", "Got To Find Another Way", and "Happiness Is Free". Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". We love the group that drummer Carl Allen has on this set – a soulful 80s young lions lineup, with Roy Hargrove on trumpet, Vincent Herring on alto and soprano, Ira Coleman on bass, and Donald Brown on piano – all taking things back to the basics of soul jazz, but with a sense of imagination and power that really mark all the players as harbingers of a new generation in jazz! Freddie Hubbard guests on two tracks – and while he sounds great, he's almost not needed – as the other players come together beautifully on all the other selections – hard-swinging, and expanding a sense of hardbop in ways that hearken back to a Jazz Messengers tradition, but with energy that's all their own. The set continues a trio format explored by Allen on a previous date – and like that one, it's got a wonderfully unfettered feel – just the bass of Ian Kenselaar and drums of Nic Cacioppo setting the stage, while JD soars out in these long, soulful solos – filled with energy and power that we might not have imagined a decade ago, making some of his strongest statements as a leader to date! Atlantic/Strawberry (UK), 1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 6CD ... Just Sold Out!
A really wonderful collection of music – work that has an already-great artist taking off into all these new directions of his own – completely reinventing himself as the jazz generations moved on, always with a really strong sense of wit and imagination! Mose Allison first emerged as a bop pianist in the 50s, but soon added a unique vocal approach that was a bit New Orleans-tinged, but with a beat jazz sensibility too – a style that was a huge influence on the UK mods in the 60s, and countless others over the years! By the time Mose hit Atlantic Records in 1962, he was already perfecting that style – then opening it up to other elements as the 60s moved on, often hitting some wilder, more unusual approaches that just kept coming through the 70s! As he shifted over to Elektra Records at the end of that decade, he stepped slightly back to more traditional jazz vocal modes – but still also kept penning his own great tunes, often with themes that maintained his unique sense of wit and vision. The box features a whopping 104 tracks on 6CDs – 12 full albums that include I Don't Worry About A Thing, Swingin Machine, Word From Mose, Wild Man Is On The Loose, Mose Alive, I've Been Doin Some Thinkin, Hello There Universe, Western Man, Mose In Your Ear, Your Mind Is On Vacation, Middle Class White Boy, and Lessons In Living. Prestige, 1971. Very Good ... $4.99
Late great work from Ammons – an album done at the time of his funk sides for Prestige, but recorded in the style of his earlier years in Chicago! The session's a laidback set of soulful solo-heavy work – recorded as part of a hip series of shows at the North Park Hotel, with a local rhythm trio that includes Jodie Christian on piano, Cleveland Eaton on bass, and Marshall Thompson on drums. James Moody joins Ammons in the frontline, and the set's got the best electric feel that you'd hear if you were lucky enough to catch either player in a small club date in the early 60s. Loads of very imaginative solo work in the best Chicago tenor tradition – with titles that include "Work Song", "Jim Jam Jug", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and "C Jam Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Tim J AndersonMaking Easy Listening – Material Culture & Postwar American Recording ... Book
University Of Minnesota Press, 2006. New Copy ... $3.99 25.00
A very deep look at the rise of easy listening in the postwar years – the transformation of instrumental styles to a particular kind of mood music that had a huge rise in sales during the 50s and 60s! Author Tim Anderson looks at a wide number of factors here – including workings of the musicians unions and record industry, as well as the larger discourse on sound aesthetics in the hi-fi generation – all with ties to the larger political and social climate of the time. The book's written from an academic perspective, and is clearly the amount of a great deal of research – and comes with copious amounts of notes that also point the way towards lots of future reading. 236 pages, softcover, with some black and white images. Anteloper (Jaimie Branch & Jason Nazary)Tour Beats Vol 1 ... LP
International Anthem, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99 19.99
Mindblowing sounds from Anteloper – a great side project from trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and one that lets her open up with lots of the more electronic sides of her spirit! The set's a collaboration with Jason Nazary – who adds in acoustic drums plus a host of electronics and effects – echoed by Branch, who blows her usual strong lead on trumpet upfront, but also works electronic magic too – so that the duo are creating in the best mix of live instrumentation, processing, and editing that have made the International Anthem label such a powerhouse in new waves of jazz in recent years. The work's not unlike some of the recent projects of trumpeter Rob Mazurek – who, not surprisingly, provides notes on the record – which includes the tracks "Bubble Under", "Isotope 420", "Soledad Sabateur", and "Radar Radio". A lost heavy rock classic from the Dunwich Production team – recorded in Michigan, but with extra orchestral backing in Chicago – for an approach that gives the record a slightly pop quality that tempers the harder rock sound nicely. The songs are actually pretty catchy, in a post-Summer Of Love pop mode – and titles include "Magic Bed", "What's In My Mind's Eye", "Heart Attack", "Strange", "Thoughts & Feelings", and "Ode To Missy Mxyzosptlk". ✨✧ Art Ensemble Of Chicago/Lester Bowie/Roscoe MitchellArt Ensemble Of Chicago & Associated Ensembles (21CD set) ... CD
ECM (Germany), Late 70s/1980s/1990s/2000s/Early 2010s. Used 21 CD ... Just Sold Out!
A huge chapter of work from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – one that not only includes their own albums for the ECM label, but also related solo and side projects too! The set begins with four Art Ensemble albums – Nice Guys, Full Force, Urban Bushman, and The Third Decade – all of which came out as a statement of the group's strengths in the late 70s and early 80s – their first mainstream appearance after a few years of being very underground, and material that helped set a whole new standard for avant jazz expression in the generation to come! Next is the fantastic album Divine Love, by trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith – not necessarily an Art Ensemble album, but one that does feature great work from trumpeter Leo Smith – plus trumpeter Kenny Wheeler, bassist Charlie Haden, and vibist Bobby Naughton. Next are four albums by Lester Bowie – two smaller group, and two with his Brass Fantasy ensemble – the records The Great Pretender, All The Magic/The One & Only, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Avant Pop. Then, after Bowie's early passing, the Art Ensemble recorded their beautiful Tribute To Lester – as a trio lineup with Roscoe Mitchell, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye. Mitchell takes the helm next – on a surprisingly big flurry of projects for ECM – records that often show a deeper compositional strand in his music – on records that include Nine To Get Ready, Composition/Improvisation, Far Side, Bells For The South Side, and Boustrophedon – the last of which was led by Evan Parker, with Mitchell in the Transatlantic Art Ensemble. Last up are three records by drummer Jack DeJohnette for ECM – New Directions and New Directions In Europe, both featuring a group with Lester Bowie on trumpet – and Made In Chicago, which features Roscoe Mitchell, Henry Threadgill, and Muhal Ricard Abrams. Recordings were made between 1978 and 2015 – and comes in a box set with a big booklet of notes! CD

Maki AsakawaNothing At All To Lose ... LP
Universal (Japan), 1988. New Copy (reissue)... $52.99
Japanese singer Maki Asakawa is looking a bit more down to earth than on her 70s albums, and the sound is maybe a bit more in that mode as well – helped out nicely here by American soul artist Bobby Watson – not the jazz musician, but the bassist/keyboardist, who produced the whole set with a nice current of contemporary R&B! Maki's vocals sometimes have this great world-weary quality – referenced by her cigarette smoking image on the cover – almost an aging European female singer sort of vibe – like she's some hip French chanteuse. Most lyrics and song titles are in Japanese – but a few English-titled tracks include "Tokyo", "Kaleidoscope", "Nothing At All To Lose", and "Love Time". LP, Vinyl record album

WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1982. New Copy ... $26.99
A beautiful example of the really special sort of instrumental record that was coming out of Japan in the early 80s – music that's spare and minimal, but quite different than any sort of similar projects from other parts of the globe! Satoshi Ashikawa creates sounds in ways that resonate both with the ancient and contemporary, organic and urban, at a level that's very slow-building and striking in its careful use of sound and space – served up here on instrumentation that includes vibes from Midori Takada, piano from Tomoko Sono, and harp from Yuko Utsumi – always tuneful, but in ways that are more like a natural progression of sound than conventional music. Titles include "Prelude", "Still Park", "Still Sky", "Wrinkle", and "Image Under The Tree". LP, Vinyl record album

Tremendous work by a jazz group we've not seen on any other records – working here in a set of live improvisations recorded in Austria in 1978! The sound is loose, but never entirely free jazz – as there's a good sense of rhythm to the group, hanging sometimes together in less-traditional ways – almost an Ornette-like way of the instruments coming together in these beautiful pulsations of sound! The lineup is unfamiliar to us, but these guys have a really fantastic sense of energy together – Harum Ghulam Barabbas on alto, Joseph Traindl on trombone, Richard Ahmad Pechoc on piano, and Muhammad Malli on drums and percussion – creating their own sort of magic on the set's six improvisations – all with very different flavors and lengths. An explosive meeting between Atomic and Ken Vandermark's School Days combo – proof that the Chicago/Scandinavia connection is stronger than ever! The double-length performance was recorded at Chicago's Green Mill nightclub, and it features an impressive lineup with Ken Vandermark on baritone sax and bass clarinet, Havard Wiik on piano, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Magnus Broo on trumpet, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, Fredrik Ljungkvist on tenor, Kjell Nordeson on vibes, and Paal Nilssen-Love – all working on very long, open tracks that almost have the feel of some of the best improvising orchestra work from years back. The vibes add a nicely chromatic quality to the work amidst some of the fiercer horn passages – and titles include "Deadline", "Irrational Ceremony", "Visitors", "Andersonville", "Dark Easter", "Fort Funston", "Bunuel At The Cocktail Party", and "Closing Stages". A brilliant pairing of free jazz forces – the Chicago-based School Days group of Ken Vandermark, and the groundbreaking Atomic combo from the Nordic jazz underground! Both Flaten and Love would become frequent collaborators in Chicago over the years – but this set captures the meeting of the groups in a very fresh way – a double-length set that's all original material – with titles that include "W Meets A", "Transparent Taylor", "Ink Worm", "Kerosene", "Conjugations" and "Dog Days". Capitol/Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! Amazing package – includes a full bonus LP of instrumental versions, appearing here for the first time ever – plus a huge 32 page booklet of notes and images! CD

David AxelrodSongs Of Experience (with booklet) ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1969. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
One of the greatest albums ever by studio genius David Axelrod! The album's one of Axelrod's first on his own – cut for Capitol Records at a time when he was working with some of the label's biggest selling soul acts – like Cannonball Adderley and Lou Rawls – turning their already-successful sounds into super-hit material by adding some nice funky touches, and excellent baroque production. This album lets Axelrod fully explore his talents for larger studio arrangements, and complex yet soulful instrumentation. The record is subtitled "an anthology of awareness after birth, based on the 18th century poems of William Blake" – and it features incredible arrangements conducted by Don Randi, played by a host of excellent LA jazz and studio players. The overall sound is spacey and dark, with nice touches of funk, and plenty of cool instrumental passages that have been sampled over the years by hip hoppers and other producers. Titles include "London", "The Fly", "The Human Abstract", "A Divine Image", and "The Sick Rose". CD

✨✧ Roy AyersTear To A Smile (UK pressing) ... CD
Polydor/Universal (UK), 1975. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the best early soul albums by Roy Ayers! Roy's working here with Dee Dee Bridgewater, Edwin Birdsong, William Allen, Harry Whitaker, and other hip players – a perfect crew to forge Roy's unique blend of jazz and soul. This is perhaps the first record to really have Roy stretching out in this mode – moving more fully away from funky jazz, into a ream of vocal tracks that would make him one of the most unique artists of the 70s. This mid 70s period of Roy's career was remarkably fertile, creatively as well as for sheer productivity – and Tears To A Smile is one of them that shows some the most artistic growth, and also a deeper sense of soul! Features righteous cuts like "2000 Black", "Ebony Blaze", "Time & Space", and "A Tear To A Smile" – plus the mellow "Magic Lady", and a great remake of Earth Wind & Fire's "That's The Way Of The World". Albert AylerBells ... LP
ESP, 1965. Near Mint- ... $19.99
A seminal live set by a young Albert Ayler – an unusual one-sided record that featured only 20 minutes of music, performed with an intensity that hardly leaves room for complaints about the shortness of the album! The single track "Bells" was performed at Town Hall by Ayler with a group that includes Donald Ayler on trumpet, Charles Tyler on alto sax, Lewis Worrell on bass, and Sunny Murray on percussion – all coming together in a raw, real sense of freedom – beautifully explored here without ever getting too overindulgent. The tune may well be one of the greatest illustrations of the ESP format at its best – as Ayler and company never stray too far, but carve out some incredibly imaginative space through their starkly-blown horn solos! Fantastic! We love Burt Bacharach in so many ways that it's easy to forget the genius of these early A&M sides – but going back to them is always a treat, and it's wonderful to hear the way that Burt lays down his own work when given the chance! You know the tracks – "House Is Not A Home", "Bond Street", "Reach Out For Me", "Are You There", "Windows Of The World" – but you may not know the arrangements, which are superb – quite different than the more famous vocal versions you've probably heard ad infinitum, and recorded at a level that brings a whole new magic and majesty to 60s pop! An ambitious album by Burt Bacharach – recorded with the Houston Symphony Orchestra, but done straight in a four hour session – which gives the set a sense of liveness and spontaneity that's quite fresh, and which escapes some of the 70s studio overindulgence of the time! Most tracks are instrumental – and although orchestral, they're done with a good sense of rhythm – and a wonderful feel that really hearkens back to the Bacharach charm of the late 60s A&M years, while also offering a few soundtracky twists. One of the most obscure Derek Bailey albums from his initial early run on Incus Records – a set of duets with percussionist Jamie Muir – and a session that almost seems to unlock more percussive possibilities than usual in Bailey's style on the guitar! If the image on the cover is anything to go by, Muir must be quite dynamic in performance – although he's also one of those percussionists who's nicely on the more sensitive side of his instruments – which means that things are never too bombastic, but almost have that explosive sense of tone that Bailey can sometimes bring to his guitar. Trio (Japan), 1978. Near Mint- ... $34.99
A fantastic record from jazz harmonica player Donald Bailey – maybe one of the few we've ever seen with his name in the lead, and a set that shows that he can easily rival some of the greats on his instrument at the time! The vibe of the set is a bit like some of the best jazz dates from Toots Thielemans – mellow accompaniment from a Japanese group that features Hideo Ichikawa on piano, Yoshio Ikeda on bass, and Takaki Nishikawa on drums – plus guest tenor from Hideyuki Kikuchi on two tracks! Yet throughout it all, the round, robust sound of Bailey on the harmonica is in the lead – blowing with a strong sense of tone, and an imaginative power that shows how he, like Toots, can really match the energy of a saxophonist in sense of solo and rhythm. CTI/King (Japan), 1982. Used ... $24.99
A great later date from CTI – proof that the label still had its magic going on well into the 80s! The session's a larger group effort headed up by Don Sebesky, and featuring key solos by Chet Baker, Jim Hall, and Hubert Laws – all of whom get plenty of room to do their thing on the album's longer tracks! Other players include Kenny Barron, Jack Wilkins, Jorge Dalto, George Mraz, and Steve Gadd – plus bit of added percussion – and although the group is large, the overall sound is relatively lean – spacious and airy, in keeping with Baker's best moments on records like these, and always sensitive enough to let Hall's gentle work on the strings of his guitar shine through nicely! Titles include "Malaguena", "Django", "Swan Lake", and "All Blues". CD
