✨✧ Alfredo LinaresAlfredo Linares Y Su Sonora Vol 1 – The Mag Years (3 x 7 inch singles) ... 7-inch
Mag/Rocafort (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 3 x 7 inch singles ... $28.99 34.99
Killer cuts from Alfredo Linares – a Peruvian pianist of the 60s, but one who works here in a groove that rivals some of the best New York material from Charlie Palmieri at the time! The set brings together six hard-hamming tracks from Alfredo's recordings for the Mag Records label in his homeland – and the music is a blend of Latin jazz and boogaloo – all tracks that are burning with lots of heavy percussion, and driven on strongly by the bold work of Linares on the keys! Titles include "Cool", "El Pito", "Descarga", "Yo Traigo Boogaloo", "Sin Tu Querer", and "Tutu Tata". 7-inch, Vinyl record

Alfredo Linares Y Su SonoraYo Traigo Boogaloo (180 gram pressing) (2020 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 27.98
A killer Latin set from late 60s Peru – one of those mighty Latin cookers from the Mag Records label – a small imprint that never got much circulation up here in the states, but which was clearly tuned in to the best modes from New York! Alfredo Linares is a real cooker on the piano – as fierce and fast as any of the uptown scene up north – and the album's got a few boogaloo slammers mixed with other great guaguanco grooves – on titles that include "Yo Traigo Boogaloo", "Boogaloo En Ambiente", "Como Yo No Hay Dos", "Peruvian Guaguanco", "Congalanque", "Linares Blues", "Tutu Tata", "Sabor Tropical", and "Probandolo Se Sabe". A wonderfully trippy record from The Beatles – filled with songs that have become classics, even though the initial package was designed for a movie that was one heck of a mess! The set's incredibly strong throughout – filled with some of the new post-Peppers ideas explored by the group, yet also with some catchier numbers too – great sing-songy tracks that undoubtedly were a big mainstream influence to the world of late 60s psych! Titles include "Blue Jay Way", "The Fool On The Hill", "Flying", "Strawberry Fields Forever", "Penny Lane", and "Baby You're A Rich Man". LP, Vinyl record album

A moving tribute to the late, great Serge Gainsbourg – served up in a mix of film and songs from his famous partner Jane Birkin! The set features a DVD directed by Jane – a 40 minute documentary filled with private images of Serge, laid out in a very loving tribute – and it's packaged with 2CDs' worth of music recorded with Serge in duet, or with lots of Gainsbourg help as both a writer or producer. Includes a rare alternate take of "Jane B" from 1968, plus "Rocking Chair", "Nicotine", "Exercice En Forme De Z", "Yesterday Yes A Day", "Ex Fan Des Sixties", "Di Doo Dah", "La Decadanse", "Baby Lou", "Quoi", "Et Quand Bien Meme", "Raccrochez C'Est Une Horreur", and lots more – including live versions of "Un Chose Entre Autres" and "Ces Petitis Riens" – and the song "La Gadoue" done with Les Negresses Vertes. Black Seeds/Sound TrekUnited States Army Special Services Agency Europe Presents The Winners Of The Second Annual Original Magnificent Special Services ... CD
US Army/Now Again, 1972. New Copy Gatefold ... $6.99 14.98
A pretty darn cool little record – even if it is a bunch of cover versions! As the title proclaims, the set presents the winners of a US Army competition for its members stationed in Europe in the early 70s – one that chose The Black Seeds for side one of the album, and Sound Trek for side two! The Black Seeds are a sweet harmony group with a really heartbreaking feel – very much in the New Jersey/Philly mode, and sounding great on a number of roughly-done covers that include "Go Outside In The Rain", "Black Magic Woman", "Do Your Thing", "Backstabbers", and "Ain't No Sunshine". The Sound Trek are a bit more groove-oriented – kicking off their set with an instrumental reading of "Kool & The Gang", but then rolling into a batch of vocal soul covers that include "Walking In The Rain", ", "Coldest Days Of My Life", "I Love Everything About You" and more. Blue MagicBlue Magic Greatest Hits ... CD
Omni/Atlantic, Early 70s. Used ... $14.99
A dozen tracks from one of the greatest east coast harmony groups of the 70s! Blue Magic came onto the scene a bit later than some of their other hit making geographical neighbors – like The Stylistics or The Moments – but their sound was pure 70s harmony all the way, and the group had a wonderful talent for mellow ballads and more driving uptempo numbers. You'll get a bit of both on this set – all with classic Philly production by either Norman Harris or Bobby Eli. Titles include "Sideshow", "Spell", "What's Come Over Me", "Three Ring Circus", "Welcome To The Club", "Chasing Rainbows", "Summer Snow", and "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely". CD

Blues MagoosNever Goin Back To Georgia (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
ABC/Big Pink (South Korea), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
A great bit of work from the re-formed Blues Magoos – a new incarnation of the group that had a few early garage rock hits, and which on this set features some great work by Eric Kaz, who seems to add a hip singer-songwriter feel to the record. The group have clearly been listening to a lot of blues and blue eyed soul, but also seem to have picked up a jazzy edge too – one that shows up nicely on the album's use of vibes. These are heard to wonderful effect on the instrumental groover "Getting Off", the mellow swinging instrumental "Georgia Breakdown", and on the group's funky cover of Joe Cuba's great "El Pito – I'll Never Go Back To Georgia" CD

Robertinho BrantFilme Imaginario ... CD
Sonhos & Sons (Brazil), 2007. Used ... $9.99
The first album in many years from Robertinho Brant – and a really evocative little set, one that more than lives up to its title! There's definitely a soundtrack sort of quality to the tunes, even though most of them are vocal numbers – and they work like little snapshots of life, put together in a way that's got some of the same lightly poetic touches of the Minas Geraes generation – echoes of the work of Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges, with possibly a touch of Edu Lobo in the arranging style as well. Backings often mix a bit of electric and acoustic instrumentation, yet never in ways that are too slick or overproduced – and Brant's breathy presentation of the lyrics really fits the mood of the set. Titles include "Da Mesma Estrela", "Sinal De Paz", "Noite Azul", "Una Mujer", "Luz Da Manha", "Os Sonhadores", and "Pobre Planeta", which features Seu Jorge. CD

Johnny BristolMGM Collection (Hang On In There Baby/Feeling The Magic) (limited edition with bonus track) ... CD
MGM/Hip-O Select, 1974/1975. Used ... $39.99
Under-discovered 70s soul genius from Johnny Bristol – an artist who's best known for his early work in the Motown studios, but who steps out here as an incredible soul singer in his own right! Johnny's work here has an undeniably funky quality – a full, rich groove that blends together soaring strings and tighter rhythms – almost taking a cue from the blacksploitation soundtracks of the time, but focusing that groove into some really tight soul tracks – sung with a voice that should have made him huge! There's a great blend here of the rough and the smooth – and the style's almost like mixing together Barry White and Sam Dees – with the full funky arrangements of the former, and all the great songwriting and vocal delivery of the latter. The CD features the full tracks from 2 albums – Feeling The Magic and Hang On In There Baby – plus a rare single-only version of "Hang On In There Baby", sung by Bristol with Alton McClain. Other titles include "Go On & Dream", "Hang On In There Baby", "Woman Woman", "Lusty Lady", "I'm Just A Loser", "I Got Your Number", "It Don't Hurt No More", "Love Me For A Reason", and "I Wouldn't Change A Thing". Peter Brotzmann Chicago TentetImages ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
A fantastic testament to the genius of the transatlantic meeting that is the Peter Brotzmann Chicago Tentet – a group that manages to bridge the sometimes-unwieldy modes of the improvising orchestra, and the energy of a smaller free jazz combo! All the players seem tied together perfectly – both at an emotional level, and a musical one – so that the combination of energy is way more than the sum of its mighty parts – a real accomplishment, given that the "parts" include Ken Vandermark, Peter Brotzmann, Marts Gustafsson, and Mars Williams on reeds – plus Joe McPhee on trumpet, Jeb Bishop on trombone, Fred Lonberg-Holm on cello, Kent Kessler on bass, and both Michael Zerang and Hamid Drake on drums. The set begins with a searing 37 minute piece dedicated to Robert Rauschenberg – Vandermark's "All Things Being Equal", which almost has a Mingus-like combination of structure and solo. "Images" follows, and is a more freewheeling piece – but completely wonderful too! CD

Daniela CasaSovrapposizione Di Immagini ... LP
Finders Keepers (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $24.99
Hypnotic sound library material from Italian composer Daniela Casa – some of her rarest work from the mid 70s – recorded in her home studio and never before released commercially! It's very compelling work, with a range of styles from minimalist soundtrack music, to fairly heavy psych, to sitar-driven strings, to airy flute pieces and beyond. It was recorded for use in radio, television and film, but it honestly works just as well as melodic, if experimental instrumentals that masterfully blends and straddles genres. Titles include "Ricerca Dela Materia", "Pericolo", "Dimensione Concreta", "Grosse Cilindrate", "Avventura", "Visione Surreale", Occultismo", "Fantasia", "Motocross", "Dimensione Astrata", Ugnoto", "Circo Del Bimbi", "Sovrapposizione Di Immagini" and more. Columbia (Japan), 1974. Used 2 CDs ... $18.99
Some of Miles noisiest, freest playing from the 70s – recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1974, and originally issued only in Japan – most likely because the album was so darn noisy, Columbia was scared to release it to the American market! As with other Davis gems from this time, the group is as adventurous as Miles himself – a really great lineup with Dave Liebman and Azar Lawrence on reeds, plus rhythm from Michael Henderson on bass, Al Foster on drums, and Mtume on percussion – all matched by three searing electric guitarists – Reggie Lucas, Pete Cosey, and Dominique Gaumont – who duel back and forth in monster solos that run all over the place during the set! DevoDuty Now For The Future (magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP
Warner/Rhino, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
Devo's second album didn't scare the bejesus out of 70s rock fans in the way of their agitpop masterpiece debut, and the group's mainstream salad days of "Whip It" were still another year or two away, but nowadays we wouldn't trade Duty Now For The Future for just about any post punk album of the time! At this point the punk-era crunch was still a sizable portion of the plate – for that extra aggro kick behind the squealing synthesizers and primitive electronics. Long underappreciated, and all but ignored in the CD era, Duty. . .has excellent tracks that will always be loved by the Spuds even if WEA kept it buried too long! Warp, 2019. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 25.99
Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". We really loved the Flamagra album from Flying Lotus, but this set of instrumentals maybe shows off even more of the deeper currents in his music! The record's not the usual instrumental variant – in that these tracks don't really come across as cuts with the vocals removed – and instead feel like all new jazz interpretations of the original album, with contributions from a great array of guests – including Robert Glasper, Herbie Hancock, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Brandon Coleman, Taylor Graves, and others – all moving together in a mix of spaced-out jazz, heavy funk, and some key cosmic touches – a beautiful blend of soul and sci-fi that really furthers the Flying Lotus legacy. FoxFox Box (Fox/Tails Of Illusion/Blue Hotel/Images/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
GTO/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $29.99 38.99
A great box collection of work from Fox– a group who recorded a handful of albums in the mid 70s, all with kind of a post-glam production style that makes all the instruments come together in this cool wash of sound, which also works perfectly for the vocals of the female lead singer – the enigmatic Noosha! The tunes are catchy, but nicely not entirely commercial – really well put-together in the studio, thanks to Kenny Young's production, who's also in the group on second guitar – bowing nicely to the strong talents of Herbie Armstrong – who handles the lead with a nicely condensed sound that works perfectly for the group's approach. There's a charm here that's hard to describe – lost material between the early 70s pop years and the smoothness of AOR, with some of the best qualities of both – served up here with enough studio work that will make you a Kenny Young fan forever – on three full albums, Fox, Tails Of Illusion, and Blue Hotel – plus the bonus Images selection of other tracks, and other bonus tracks too – 56 tracks in all, with a big booklet of notes! Regent/Savoy, 1957. Used ... Just Sold Out!
One of the great dates that Curtis Fuller cut for the Savoy label in the late 50s – material that's much more hard-edged than his Blue Note sessions, and which points the way towards a rich legacy of jazz work in decades to come! The group here has a nicely open, laidback approach – that Savoy style that was almost a blowing session mode, but a bit more controlled – long tracks handled by the group with some of the energy they might bring to a live club performance of the time. The groove is mostly hardbop – with Curtis Fuller's trombone and Sonny Red's alto taking strong solos – in a group that also features Tommy Flanagan on piano, George Tucker on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Titles include a medley of "It's Magic/My One & Only Love/They Didn't Believe Me" – plus "Two Ton", "Soul Station", "Club Car", and "Upper Berth". CD

✨✧ FunkadelicMaggot Brain ... CD
Westbound, 1971. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Amazing stuff – and arguably the greatest early Funkadelic album ever! The set moves past the simple fuzzy style of the group's debut, and the overly-stoned sound of Free Your Mind – and rockets into a heady funk style that's filled with sly social commentary and an incredibly dark vision of the future! The centerpiece of the album is the mindblowing "Maggot Brain" title track – a tune that begins with a chilling spoken intro, then slowly builds amidst washes and washes of post-Hendrix guitar. That cut then rolls into some shorter, funkier numbers that rank with some of the group's best ever – using the device of party-hearty energy to convey a sense of alienation and horror at the world. The whole thing's brilliant throughout – and apart from being a soul classic, the set should also rank as one of the greatest rock albums of all time! Titles include "Maggot Brain", "Super Stupid", "Back in Our Minds", "Can You Get to That", and "Wars of Armageddon". CD

Remi Gassman and Oskar Sala each present pieces of modern electronic music in this hard to find LP for Westminster, very much in the style that was in vogue in New York in the 50s and early 60s. Gassman performs his "Electronic Music For the Ballet Electronics", which has a spare spooky sound, and Sala gives us "Five Improvisations On Magnetic Tape" – which are a bunch of short electronic tracks with a fragile, yet noisy feel to them. As the back of the record says "If anyone cares, this record has a dynamic range of 51 dB. Its lowest frequency is 15.4 cycles per second, its highest fundamental 3951 cps, the highest harmonis or overtone 15806 cps. It can blow out speakers, traumatize cats and arouse the landlord." Fitz Gore & The TalismenSoundmagnificat ... LP
Gorbra/Sonorama (Germany), Mid 70s. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
A rare jazz gem from tenor saxophonist Fitz Gore – originally issued on the Gorbra label in Germany in a very tiny quantity! The record's a bit unlike anything else of the time – spiritual jazz, certainly, but with all these different approaches that vary from track to track, as does the lineup – really showing a richness that leaves us breathless once the record is done! Gore's got this nicely edgey tone on the tenor – a tendency to maybe craft the occasional angles you might hear from an alto, but with a deeper sound overall – and other players on the record include Ulrich Gore on piano, Gerhard Ebbo on bass, and Phillipe Zobda Quitman on drums – although one track has gamelan, another has vibes, and another has congas – all of which makes for a nice shift in flavors! At times, Fitz has this slow-burning quality, at others he almost echoes a Coltrane ballads mode, and at one point he sings a bit – really surprising us with his mellifluous voice. Titles include "Steal Away", "Requiem For Julian Cannonball Adderley", "Delilah", and "A Sinner Kissed An Angel" – most nice and long. LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie HancockMagic Windows ... CD
Columbia (France), 1981. Used ... $9.99
A great little soul album from Herbie Hancock – but one that's often lost in the valleys between his bigger hits of the time! The record was cut in the space right before Herbie's big "Rockit" success – and it's a sweet bit of funky fusion that has a good dose of R&B in the mix – similar to other records from Hancock's Columbia label keyboardist contemporaries – like Rodney Franklin, Webster Lewis, or Charles Earland! All orchestrations are performed by Herbie on a host of keyboards and synthesizers, and just about every cut has vocals – from singers who include Sylvester, Gavin Christopher, and The Waters. But even with this soul component, Herbie still keeps things jazzy – using a good bit of keyboards to open up the tunes in the middle, and hitting hard on all numbers with that classic Hancock approach to funk! Titles include "Magic Number", "Tonight's The Night", "Everybody's Broke", "Help Yourself", and "Satisfied With Love". CD

Imaginary Numbers (Joe McPhee)Imaginary Numbers ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. New Copy ... $13.99
A really old school trio setting – one that has a loose, open, freely exploratory vibe that really takes us back to the loft jazz generation – as the musicians work in very creative territory that really shows their individual spirits, yet still also come together strongly as a whole! Joe McPhee is great on tenor and trumpet – and really reminds us of those tremendous textures and tones he started developing in the late 70s – and the rest of the trio features Pascal Niggenkemper on bass and Stale Liavik Solberg on drums – both younger musicians, but equally creative in the setting. Titles include "i", "A", and "Zero Supreme Love" – the last of which is dedicated to John Coltrane. CD

ImaginationsImaginations ... LP
20th Century, Mid 70s. Very Good+ ... $19.99
An excellent group soul from Chicago – and no wonder, since The Imaginations were previously Brighter Side Of Darknes, a sublime falsetto harmony group who had a huge hit in 1972 with "Love Jones". This record's very much in the vein of that song – but also features a maturation of the group's emotions and harmonies, taking them into a mix of sophisticated love songs and righteous society tunes that puts them with the best of the early 70s harmonicists from the east coast. The album was produced in Chicago by Star-Vue Productions, and it's got arrangements by Tom Tom and Benjamin Wright that are very much in the mode of late Cadet and Brunswick work. Titles include "Because I Love You", "Ballad Of Matheia", "Love Diet", "God Bless You Love", "Me, Myself & I", "Searchin'", and "Talk About the World". LP, Vinyl record album

Jose JamesBlack Magic (10th anniversary edition) ... LP
Brownswood/Rainbow Blonde, 2010. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 25.99
A brilliant second set from Jose James – and that's saying a lot, given that his debut was already a classic in our book! The sound here is a little more full, and a little more confident – a magical blend of James' raspy vocals with some jazz and funk-inflected rhythms – never overdone, and all put together with the kind of poise and depth that's made Jose an artist to watch since his very first single! There's a positive, progressive vibe to the whole record – the kind of excitement we only feel grabbing us once in a blue moon – and the sound is expanded a bit from the laidback combo of the first record, thanks to production help from Flying Lotus, Mitsu The Beats, and others. But James' vocals are always center stage in the mix, no matter what the setting – and titles include "Lay You Down", "Touch", "Promise In Love", "Warrior", "Made For Love", "Code", "Save Your Love For Me", "Detroit Loveletter", and "Beauty". A very cool record, and exactly what's promised in the title – this beautiful mixing of guitar and tabla – the latter handled by Zakir Hussain, the former by the great Brij Bhushan Kabra! Tracks are nice and long, and are a variant of the 60s raga recordings that were captured often by EMI – but with a different flavor, given the use of the guitar – which is adapted here by Kabra, with use of some bronze strings – which really deepens the sound of the instrument and widens its color range! Side one features "Raga Shud Kalyan", which has some work on jhala – and side two features "Raga Kafi". LP, Vinyl record album

John KlemmerMagnificent Madness ... LP
Elektra, 1980. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Nothing too mad from reedman John Klemmer – but a set that nicely continues that spacey sound that Klemmer first created at Impulse Records, then moved into some warmer, more soulful territory on records like this! Klemmer's still got an incredibly strong sound on tenor – rich and full, and never held back at all – nor prone to some of the more gimmicky flourishes of some of his mainstream contemporaries – and the setting is never too slick or overdone, which seems to suit John just right! Keyboards work nicely in a mellow, spaced-out groove – and Klemmer crackles these effortless lines out in space – of the soulful style we first fell in love with on his earliest work for Chess. The set features guitar from John Tropea, keyboards from Don Grusin, and drums from Harvey Mason – and Klemmer even vocalizes a bit – in a surprisingly strong style for the music. Titles include "Magnificent Madness", "Deja Vu", "Lifesong", "Adventures In Paradise", "I Can't Help It", and "Don't Take Your Love Away". LP, Vinyl record album

Earl KlughEarl Klugh/Living Inside Your Love/Magic In Your Eyes ... CD
Blue Note/BGO (UK), 1976/1978. New Copy 2CD ... About May 4, 2021 (delayed)
A trio of Earl Klugh albums from the mid-to-late 70s – Earl Klugh, Living Inside Your Love and Magic In Your Eyes – in a 2CD set! Earl Klugh is the guitarists debut – a player whose sound went onto dominate late 70s fusion in a big big way! Klugh's clearly stepping here into a space allowed by George Benson at the time – a blend of jazz and R&B that's warmer and mellower than work previously done on Blue Note in the decade (or on CTI and Kudu for that matter) – one that's less focused on rhythm than it is on tone, and the kind of setting that allows Earl to shine wonderfully. There's a lot less of the cheesiness here that would hurt Klugh's later albums, and the overall presentation is nicely retrained – arranged by Dave Grusin at a time when he still knew how to bring a good deal of soul into a session, avoiding cliche and letting the soloist step forth unmarred. Other players include Lee Ritenour, Harvey Mason, and Grusin himself – and Klugh plays both electric and acoustic guitar, on tunes that include "Angelina", "Slippin In The Back Door", "Vonetta", "Waltz For Debby", and "Wind & The Sea". Living Inside Your Love is his second album for Blue Note – and like the first, a nicely stripped-down album that we like a lot better than his later work! Klugh's sound and tone are still very pure here – set up in some nice small group arrangements by Dave Grusin, and recorded in a way that brings out all the sweetness in Earl's approach, without falling into the cheesy qualities that it inspired in so many other, weaker players. If anything, Klugh's style is stronger and more confident than on his first outing – on titles that include "Kiko", "The April Fools", "Captain Caribe", "Felicia", and "Living Inside Your Love". Magic In Your Eyes is another sweet early effort from Klugh, with the title track plus "Alicia", "Julie", "Rose Hips", "Cry A Little While", "Cast Your Fate To The Wind" and more. CD

John LennonImagine ... LP
Apple, 1971. Very Good+ ... $49.99
Not the out there primal scream of Plastic Ono, and more of an impeccably produced, easy to love landmark from John Lennon! The title track, beautiful as it is, is so heavily ingrained into rock & roll myth making machine that it's become too easy to overlook how great most of the songs on the album are. It must be the most consistent of John's LPs post-Beatles, and it's just about as essential as they come. Co-produced by Phil Spector, yet it's often not as grandly orchestrated as a Wall Of Sound effort, and well tailored to Lennon's songs. Includes "Give Me Some Truth", "Oh My Love", "How Do You Sleep?", "Imagine", "Crippled Inside", "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Want To Be A Soldier". LP, Vinyl record album

Way more than just batucada jazz – or even just straight bossa jazz too – and a set that bristles with some really creative energy all the way through! Percussion definitely has plenty to do with the record, but the reeds are pretty great too – handled by Lindgren, and apparently overdubbed in spots – in ways that have his saxes and flute cascading together with tight, complicated, Brazilian jazz-styled lines. Other instrumentation includes trombone, guitar, and bass – and titles include "Elbow Style", "Rio Shadow", "Soofa", "Farofa", "Djungledance", "Batucada Jazz", and "No More Words". CD

Here it is – the first Spoonful LP in all its sunny, groovy glory – and the sum is so much more than just a great single! Like the Byrds, the group is built on traditionally structured back-porch melodies. In the case of the Spoonful, jug band influences provide the core rhythmic groove, but the stratospheric tendencies of mid-to-late 60s pop really pushes them into something special and all their own. Tracks include "Younger Girl", "Other Side Of This Life", "Sportin Life", "You Baby", "My Gal", "Do You Believe In Magic", and "Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind". Mallu Magalhaes has this raspy little quality in her voice – almost a Brazilian version of Charlotte Gainsbourg, but with a slightly warmer feel overall – one that's perfect for the album's mellow grooving numbers, served up in a blend of playful styles that moves from sonically-sensitive contemporary modes, back to a few with a slight bossa undercurrent. Marcelo Camelo produced the record, and his touch definitely helps guide the whole thing nicely – and titles include "Por Que Voce Faz Assim Comigo", "Sambinha Bom", "Cena", "Velha E Louca", "In The Morning", and "Highly Sensitive". A beautiful classic from Magna Carta – a British group with a sound that's a lot more down to earth than you'd guess from their name – which maybe implies the sort of majesty you'd usually hear from a prog group! Instead, the trio have a very charming, down to earth approach – acoustic guitar and harmonized vocals – moving past folk, but just barely – so that they're using all these more modern chord progressions, and getting some light larger touches in the arrangements – which are all handled by Tony Visconti, who plays bass along with Rick Wakeman on organ and piano, and Peter Willison on cello – an instrument that often shades in the tunes in just the right way. ✨✧ Teena MarieIrons In The Fire/It Must Be Magic ... CD
Universal, 1980/1981. Used ... Just Sold Out!
Irons In The Fire is a stone classic from Teena Marie – one of her magical self-produced efforts for Motown! The record's a winner all the way through – with a depth to the vocals and backings that are steeped in the 70s styles of Minnie Riperton and Chaka Khan. A few tracks get a bit upbeat funky, but overall, it's the mellow ones we like the best. Titles include "I Need Your Lovin", "Young Love", "First Class Love", "Irons In The Fire", "Chains", "You Make Love Like Springtime", and "Tune In Tomorrow". It Must Be Magic is maybe the greatest album that Teena Marie ever cut – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of the lady's work for Motown! The set's got this bright, positive bounce that grabs you right from the start – but also moves into a depth that's way different than other funk albums of the time – a way with a ballad and a thoughtful track that almost makes Marie the 80s heir to the Minnie Riperton legacy, especially given the strength of her voice on the set – and the fact that Teena wrote and produced the whole album herself! At a time when so many other female soul singers were at the mercy of other folks' talents and ideas, Lady T steps forth boldly with this classic set – brimming over with greatness on cuts that include the stellar "Portuguese Love", plus "Yes Indeed", "Where's California", "Opus III", "Square Biz", "365", "Revolution", and "Ballad Of Cradle Rob & Me". Okka Disk, 2002. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
Two important improvising trios come together head to head in the transatlantic brilliance of Okka Disk Records in the 90s – recorded in a very unusual way that lets you clearly hear all the contributions of the members of the group! In the left channel stands AALY – a searing lineup of Mats Gustafsson on alto and tenor, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on bass, and Kjell Nordeson on drums – and in the right channel stands DKV, with Ken Vandermark on tenor and bass clarinet, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums – a mighty meeting of musicians who are really at the top of their improvising game! Rather than come on head-to-head, it's amazing to hear the way that these well-matched trios open up to each other – especially the bassists and drummers, who are maybe less familiar in this setting than Vandermark and Gustafsson, who were an instantly amazing musical pair. The set begins with the original "Left To Right", then the group makes real magic over the course of 51 minutes, in a piece that offers variations on Albert Ayler's "Angels" and Don Cherry's "Awake Nu". Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Great diaspora sounds from Afrodyssey Orchestra – a group who bring so much more to their music than most of their contemporaries – in ways that both tap into their native cultural history in Greece, and really open up some of the deeper jazz currents of their songs! Instrumentation includes the percussion elements you might expect – but we're even more captivated by the work on keyboards and tenor – which really sparkle throughout, and which make the record often feel like some futurist fusion reimagining of Afro Funk inspirations – with a nice lean sound that's more small combo than "orchestra"! Titles include "One For Ry", "Under The Sun", "Sisters & Brothers", "Three Tigers & Three Baby Tigers", "Soil Festivities", and "Mama Africa". LP, Vinyl record album

Sharhabil AhmedKing Of Sudanese Jazz ... CD
Habibi Funk (Germany), Late 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Really fantastic music, with a sound that's as hip as the image on the cover – not jazz as we know it here in the US, but a wonderful hybrid of our own musical roots with elements of Sudanese music – all delivered with a very postmodern mish-mash of styles, and a sound that's unlike anything else we can think of! The blend is a bit like some of the hybrids that were occurring in Ethiopian music at the time – and is maybe as unique as some of those classic recordings – with vocals that have a stretched-out style with lots of inflections, set up next to jagged rhythms that often have as much guitar in the groove as percussion, topped with offbeat reed passages that use lots of very cool tuning! Maybe the best release so far from this wonderful label – with titles that include "El Bambi", "Ya Shagini", "Aziza", "Malak Ya Saly", "Argos Farfish", and "Kamar Dawa". CD

Ambrose AkinmusireWhen The Heart Emerges Glistening ... CD
Blue Note, 2011. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A lovely title, and a lovely little record too – every bit as poetic as its promise – with haunting trumpet lines by Ambrose Akimusire, nestled nicely in an acoustic quintet that also features Gerald Clayton on piano and Walter Smith III on tenor! There's an understated quality to the record that's really nice – none of the too-modern modes you might guess from the cover image (we'll admit that sometimes we're suspicious of contemporary Blue Note mixing it up too much) – and instead a style that's mighty fresh, yet still pretty earthy – modern, yet never too outside – and a sense of soul that informs proceedings and really helps keep things on track. Titles include "Jaya", "Henya", "Far But Few Between", "Confessions To My Unborn Daughter", "The Walls Of Lechuguilla", and "My Name Is Oscar". CD

Ihsan Al-MunzerBelly Dance Disco – Ernest Chahoud Presents Middle Eastern Heavens ... CD
A Chahine & Fils/BBE (UK), 1979. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A really fantastic little record – and one that's even better than you might expect from the title – which itself is already pretty darn fantastic! The set is upbeat and funky, but not entirely disco – more this very groovy blend of Mid-East elements and more familiar keyboards – all moving and grooving in ways that are a lot hipper than any other belly dance music we've heard! Music features piano and organ, plus a very cool "string synthesizer" by played by the leader – and there's also plenty of percussion at the core of the set, making for a nice juxtaposition with the electric elements. Titles include "Night Entertainer", "Dance Of Tenderness", "Joy Of Lina", "A Flower Of My Imagination", "Love Of Laura", "Girls Of Iskandariah", and "Once A Year". CD

AlamoAlamo (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Atlantic/Big Pink (South Korea), 1971. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
That's a Texas image on the cover, which is pretty fitting for the sound of Alamo – as they've got a really heady brew of psych, hard rock, and southern elements – all forged together with a sound that would have been right at home on early 70s Capricorn Records! The group are part of that wave of artists who grew up in the shaggier side of the garage and psych undergrounds of the late 60s, then moved forward with a fuller, more carefully conceived sound – captured here beautifully in sessions recorded at Ardent Studios in Memphis, which really illuminate all their great work on guitar and organ, while still keeping things very lean overall. Ken Woodley handles the vocals and keys, Larry Raspberry the guitar – and titles include "Get The Feelin", "Question Raised", "The World We Seek", "Soft & Gentle", "Got To Find Another Way", and "Happiness Is Free". Susan Alcorn/Joe McPhee/Ken VandermarkInvitation To A Dream ... CD
Astral Spirits, 2019. New Copy ... $8.99 12.99
Amazing sounds from three great improvisers – two of whom we've known and loved for years, one of whom we're just beginning to discover! The trio features Ken Vandermark on tenor and clarinet, Joe McPhee on soprano sax and pocket trumpet, and Susan Alcorn on pedal steel guitar – the last of which is an instrument that's used in very different, very unconventional ways – more like a subtle sonic element, but still with some musical qualities – which then seems to create the same sort of balance in McPhee and Vandermark, both of whom are more fragile, more sensitive here than we've heard them in years! There's still a few more fully-blown passages, but the real beauty of the record lies in the more subtle sonic interplay, which is magical throughout. Titles include "Invitation To A Dream", "The Eyes Of Memory", "Rise & Rise", "Every Season Has Its Reason", and "I Am Because You Are". CD

Alessandro Alessandroni/Francesco DeMasiLesbo (180 gram limited edition pressing) ... LP
Beat/BTF (Italy), 1969. New Copy Gatefold ... $34.99 44.99
Sexy ladies on the cover, and some equally sexy sounds underneath – served up in a perfect 60s Italian blend of jazz and bossa-based styles! Sweeping strings bring a nice sense of depth to some numbers, while others have a more intimate feel – either via spare guitar, or some jazzy elements on piano, sax, and organ – shifting instrumentation that really keeps things interesting throughout, and which makes the record feel like some rich narrative on its own, in sound – without any need for the images on the screen. The whole thing is wonderful – one of those Italian soundtrack treasures that delivers even more than it promises – and music was composed by Alessandro Alessandroni and Francesco De Masi, then orchestrated by De Masi, with some cool wordless vocal moments as well. Titles include a number of variations on "Lesbo" plus the sweet vocal opener "Qualsiasi Cosa", "Crepuscolo Sul Mare", and "IL'Isola Dell'Amore". LP, Vinyl record album

Eric AlexanderGentle Ballads (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Venus (Japan), 2004. New Copy (reissue)... $56.99
A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". The group's a quartet, with Mike Le Donne on piano, John Webber on bass, and Joe Farnsworth on drums – and the session's recorded with impeccable sound, in the Venus Records mode. Eric AlexanderLeap Of Faith ... CD
Giant Step Arts, 2019. New Copy ... $19.99 20.00
The great Eric Alexander in a trio mode – soaring out with a lot more space and soul than some of his albums with a pianist – and that's saying a lot, given the wonderfully soulful sound of that work too! The style is a mode that Alexander has explored a bit over the years, but which really comes out with great force here – and opens up a sharper, more biting tone than you might be used to hearing from the saxophonist over his 25+ years of recording! It's almost as if Eric's awoken with a whole new sense of spirit – and we mean that quite literally, as the album has Alexander arising as a very powerful saxophonist in a spiritual tradition – with a sound that's still very individual, but which has links to a legacy that includes Pharoah Sanders and Charles Lloyd – something we never would have said about Eric just a few years ago. The other trio members are key to the sound, too – Doug Weiss on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums – and titles include "Corazon Perdido", "Luquitas", "Mars", "Magyar", "Big Richard", "Second Impression", and "Frenzy". Eric AlexanderSong Of No Regrets ... CD
High Note, 2017. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
Eric Alexander is in familiar company here, but he also seems to be using the setting to open up a bit more in terms of his color and groove – sometimes with a looser groove, sometimes with even a gentler approach to his phrasing – but always with that never-ending sense of imagination that we've always loved in his music! Alongside bassist John Webber, drummer Joe Farnsworth, and pianist David Hazeltine, the group also features Alex Diaz on percussion – who brings a bit of complexity to the rhythms, in a mighty nice way – and changes things up from the bottom, in ways that Eric seems to respond to with his horn. The album also features trumpeter Jon Faddis on a few tracks – and his sense of color also seems to bring out a slightly different vibe in Alexander, as the tenor responds in contrast to the more familiar sparkle of Jon's horn. Titles include "Mas Que Nada", "Grinder", "Corazon Perdido", "These Three Words", and "But Here's The Thing". CD

Rashied Ali QuintetFirst Time Out – Live At Slug's ... LP
Survival, 1967. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $39.99 46.99
A fantastic rare performance from drummer Rashied Ali – a musician who's best known for his work with John Coltrane during his later years, but who steps out here beautifully as a leader on his own! Ali's tremendous here – effortlessly non-stop on the drums – a player who seems unable to rest even for a minute – with that sense of boundless imagination that really helped set Coltrane free on their recordings together – fused here with contributions from a very unusual quintet that includes Ramon Morris on tenor, Dewey Johnson on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on piano, and Reggie Johnson on bass! The energy is maybe a rawer step to the side of the ESP generation, and definitely points the way towards the loft jazz scene that Rashied would help form and be such an important part of in the 70s – on titles that include "Study For As Salaam Alikum", "Composition 1", "Ballade", and "Composition 2". JD AllenToys/Die Dreaming ... CD
Savant, 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.98
Boldly brilliant work from tenor saxophonist JD Allen – a player who's always been great, but who seems to be hitting a whole new side of his powers in recent years! The set continues a trio format explored by Allen on a previous date – and like that one, it's got a wonderfully unfettered feel – just the bass of Ian Kenselaar and drums of Nic Cacioppo setting the stage, while JD soars out in these long, soulful solos – filled with energy and power that we might not have imagined a decade ago, making some of his strongest statements as a leader to date! The set includes a fair bit of original titles, but these are just more like sketches for the open energy of the tenor – on titles that include "Die Dreaming", "Red Label", "Toys", "Elegua", and "You're My Thrill". Curtis AmyKatanga (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Pacific Jazz/Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 34.99 On June 4, 2021
A stellar set from one of the most underrated reed players of all time – a brilliant bit of searching soul jazz, cut at a time when Curtis Amy was leaving behind his Texas roots for the new sounds of the Coltrane generation! The album's quite different than the organ and tenor dates that Amy had previously cut with Paul Bryant – and instead, is put together with a nascent spiritualism that's really wonderful – a sound that definitely lives up to the bold title and cover image, with lots of modal moments in the rhythms! The group features some equally under-acknowledged geniuses – including trumpeter Dupree Bolton, pianist Jack Wilson, and guitarist Ray Crawford – all coming together perfectly with Amy's work on tenor and soprano sax. The best tunes here are originals by the group members – including "Lonely Woman" (not by Ornette), "Katanga", "Native Land", and "Amyable". LP, Vinyl record album
