✨✧ La Sonora MagEl Negro Bembon (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1959. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A set titled after the Peruvian powerhouse Mag Records, for which it was recorded – but an album that's really the brainchild of percussionist Niko Estrada – who leads the group here with a driving vibe that's very much on the cusp of the same sort of descarga energy that was hitting the Havana scene at the time! The rhythms are great, and the Mag recording style has all sorts of echo that really pulls out the sound – even on the piano when those notes lead in the grooves – so that the whole thing has a great sense of power, even on the mellower moments. The set includes vocals by a young Chivirico Davila – plus Vicky Zamora and Manolo Castro – on titles that include "Un Dia De Amor", "Te Para Dos", "El Negro Bembon", "La Isla Del Encanto", "Juan Jose", "Ella Y Yo", "El Munecon", "Ven Pa Mi Casa", and "Pepito". Nilo Espinosa/Bossa 70/Los HiltonsShaken, Not Stirred ... CD
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy ... $5.99 16.99
Some of the finest Peruvian grooves of the 60s and 70s – served up by three different groups headed by reedman Nilo Espinosa, plus a few other combos as well! Nilo's got a way with a groove that's totally unique – a bit soul jazz a times, influenced by bossa at others, and sometimes even moving into sweet electric fusion – always with a very pronounced sense of rhythm that makes nearly all of his numbers into the kind of groovers that can easily traverse the globe far from their roots in the Peruvian scene! The package features work from the mid 60s Los Hilton's, the early 70s Bossa 70, and the mid 70s Nil's Jazz Ensemble – the last of whom have been favorites for years with crate-diggers, due to their use of electric keyboards and very tasty drums! Titles include "Here Come The Hilton's" and "Sherezade" by Los Hilton's; "El Gato", "Think", "Get Out Of My Way", and "Las Mariopsas" by Bossa 70; "Reflexiones", "Summer Love", "Hard Work", "Looking For A Blues", and "Somos Nada" by Nil's Jazz Ensemble; "El Bueno El Feo Y El Malo" by Nilo Espinosa Con Los 007; "Light My Fire" by Charlie Guerrero; "Gotas De Miel" by Nilo Espinosa Y Orquesta; and "People Got To Be Free" by Charlie & Many. Luciano Luciani Y Sus MulatosMulata – Vamos A La Salsa (180 gram vinyl) (2022 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99 28.99
Saxophonist Luciano Luciani moved to Peru from Italy in the 60s – and by the time of this debut set from the start of the 70s, he was very much on top of the scene – working hard here to lead his tight combo through a jumping set of cumbia grooves mixed with a few other rhythms too! Luciano handles the saxophone parts, as you'd guess from his image on the cover – and vocals are by two different male singers, who each give the record a nice sort of flavor, depending on the track. The set's got a great small combo vibe that's like the grittier side of the New York scene – and titles include "Mi Chiquita", "Cuzquenita", "Fiesta En Corraleja", "Maruja", "Mulata Vamos A La Salsa", "Morenita", "Metro", and "Cumbiamba". Nil's Jazz EnsembleNil's Jazz Ensemble (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1976. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99
Amazing funky fusion from the Peruvian scene of the 70s – a record that crackles with energy to match the best soul jazz coming from the US at the time! The group's the brainchild of reed player Nilo Espinosa – who plays flute, tenor, and soprano on the set – always with soulful tones and changes that remind us a lot of work from the period on the Black Jazz label, particularly the best recordings by Rudolph Johnson. And besides Espinosa's great work on sax and flute, the album's also got a great asset in drummer Andres Silva – who hits his kit with a sound that breaks and crackles one minute, then lays back into a more lyrical mode the next – really expanding the styles of the album, and allowing heavier funk to sit equally next to jazzier, breezier numbers. There's some great keyboards on the record too, plus some nice production effects – and titles include "Summer Love", "Siempre", "Reflexiones", "Black Angel", "Looking for a Blues", and a cover of "Hard Work". ✨✧ Coco LagosDescargas (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Amazing Latin grooves from the Peruvian scene of the 60s – an a record that well lives up to its "descarga" title! Congolero Coco Lagos may hail from Lima, but he's got a sound that's right up there with the best of the New York scene of his generation – a hard-hitting and tightly rhythmic approach to his music, in a mode that's clearly inspired by the early 60s Cuban descarga sessions, but which also serves up the tunes in a tighter, even more firey style! Instrumentation includes plenty of percussion, piano, and vibes – all ringing out in a way that matches the best work on the Alegre or Tico labels from the early 60's. Titles include "Mamblues", "Brava Pachanga", "Echate Pa'Lla", "Noche Buena", and "Tumba Coco". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Traffic SoundVirgin ... CD
Mag/Munster (Spain), 1970. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A legendary album from the Peruvian scene at the start of the 70s – a record from one of the key groups who were really helping deepen the sound of the music at the time, and take things far past some of the simpler Anglo-inspired music of the 60s! It's tempting to call these guys psychedelic, but they've also got so much more going on too – maybe a bit like some of the Argentine groups, in that they are allowing for regional instrumentation to play with electric elements – all while delivering tunes that have a surprisingly new level of thoughtfulness in the lyrics. The blend is a bit hard to describe, but it comes across instantly in the music – at a level that's made the set one of the true global rock classics of the decade! Titles include "Virgin", "Tell The World I'm Alive", "Yellow Sea Days (March 7th/March 8th/March 9th)", "Jews Caboose", "A Place In Time Called 'You And Me'", "Simple", "Meshkalina", and "Last Song". Mag/Vampi Soul (Spain), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A killer Latin set from late 60s Peru – one of those mighty Latin cookers from the Mag Records label – a small imprint that never got much circulation up here in the states, but which was clearly tuned in to the best modes from New York! Alfredo Linares is a real cooker on the piano – as fierce and fast as any of the uptown scene up north – and the album's got a few boogaloo slammers mixed with other great guaguanco grooves – on titles that include "Yo Traigo Boogaloo", "Boogaloo En Ambiente", "Como Yo No Hay Dos", "Peruvian Guaguanco", "Congalanque", "Linares Blues", "Tutu Tata", "Sabor Tropical", and "Probandolo Se Sabe". ✨✧ Benny SingsBeat Tape 2 ... LP
Stones Throw, 2022. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A bit more of a stripped-down set than other work that Benny Sings has given us in recent years – definitely a record with the vibe of the beat tape promised in the title – but one that still has some of the soulful elements that Benny's given us on other records too! The hip hop element is stronger here than usual, right down to the record's guests – who include Koreatown Oddity, Cola Boyy, Mocky, St Panther, Rae Khalil, and others – and Benny put the album together out of elements that weren't used in the final version of his album Music – but which still carry some of the soulful currents of that set. Titles include "Money & Guns", "Don't Look", "CGEOOL", "Green Grass", "Watch Me Heal", "Song 13", and "Mag Ik In Je Huid". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Maceo & All The King's MenDoing Their Own Thing ... LP
House Of The Fox/Charly (UK), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A fantastic funky gem from the start of the 70s – an album recorded during a period when Maceo Parker left James Brown's band for a few years – and struck out on his own with a fiery little combo that was every bit as funky as the Fred Wesley & The JBs! The record captures the group at the height of their powers, and it's a must, must, must-have for any fan of the the James Brown sound – as it's got lots of hard drums, rumbling basslines, and some killer work on funky horns – some of it by other members of James' band who had left with Maceo! Funny, funky, and a little bit jazzy too – like a pile of funky 45s stacked on top of each other – with the cuts "Funky Women", "Got to Getcha", "Southwick", "Mag-Poo", "I Remember Mr Banks", "Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself", "Shake It Baby", and "Better Half". We've really dug the last two records from Ambrose, and this one seems to push his voice even father than before – sometimes in smaller acoustic settings, sometimes with a bit of vocals, and sometimes a bit of strings – performed by a shifting lineup that includes guests Becca Stevens, Theo Bleckmann, and Cold Specks on vocals – plus a core group that includes Walter Smith on tenor and Sam Harris on piano. Titles include "Marie Christie", "Memo", "Ceasless Inexhaustible Child", "Rollcall For Those Absent", "Vartha", and "Our Basement". CD

Andy BeyPages From An Imaginary Life ... CD
High Note, 2014. Used ... $8.99
Andy Bey on piano and vocals, with no other support – still sounding great after all these many years on the planet – and still one of the most unique singers in jazz! The album's based on a set of familiar standards, structured into "pages" – at a level that almost gives the record a sense of narrative structure – but although the tunes are well-known, Bey's performances certainly aren't – as he manages to break down the rhythms and melodies in really unusual ways with his piano lines, then match their energy with his singing, which still has all the old angular inflections you'd know from his work with Horace Silver or Gary Bartz. At some level, the spareness and deep roots take us back to his work with the Bey Sisters – without them in place, obviously – although there's a much richer sense of life and world presence holding the music together here. Titles include "Dog Eat Dog", "My Foolish Heart", "Jealousy", "All That Glitters Is Not Gold", "Everything I Have is Yours", "Humor Keeps Us Alive", "Good Morning Heartache", "Love For Sale", and "Lover Come Back To Me". Sdban (Belgium), 2022. New Copy ... $26.99
A really haunting little record – one that hangs in older jazz-based territory, but layers in a bit of contemporary elements as well – all with a sound that's maybe somewhere in that special sort of spectrum that might includes recent projects by Hampshire & Foat! There's some great flute and saxophones on the record – mixed in with slow-swelling keyboard lines, quiet bass bits, gentle drums, and great use of cornet – the last of which kind of has a warmer glow, almost like the sun rising over a misty landscape – very poetic, and a beautiful addition to the record! One track has vocals, but the rest of the album is instrumental – and titles include "Morning In The Jungle", "Deep Dive Down", "The Forge", "Blue Speck", "The Light", "O Fogo", and "Half Liquid". Blues MagoosGulf Coast Bound (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
ABC/Big Pink (South Korea), 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $18.99 22.99
Amazing work from the Blues Magoos – stretching way beyond their roots as a garage rock band! The album's free, open, with a really jazzy style that shows that these guys had been soaking up plenty of influences from the left end of the singer/songwriter spectrum – and had also been spending a lot of time learning how to play their instruments! At one level, the album's chock-a-block with hip tunes that veer into blue eyed soul territory – and at another, it's got some jazzy inflections that move into the mind-expanding territory reached by a rare few other rock/soul groups of the time. Percussion is wonderful on the set, and Pee Wee Ellis plays a lot of great sax on the set – and the real treat is excessive use of vibes, which makes for some cool sounds on a number of tracks. Includes the long groover "Can't Get Enough Of You", which features a great percussion breakdown in the middle – plus "Gulf Coast Bound", "Sea Breeze Express", "Magoo's Blues", "Tonight The Sky's About To Cry", and "Slow Down Sundown". Captain Beefheart & His Magic BandLick My Decals Off, Baby ... LP
Reprise/Straight, 1970. Very Good+ ... $49.99
One of best ever records by gonzo rock genius Captain Beefheart and his incredible Magic Band – the proper follow up to Trout Mask Replica – and they;re still at the height of their powers! Art Tripp's marimba and percussion gives the group an extra rhythmic complexity, not that they EVER lacked for that, even while the bands strips down some of the more meandering tendencies of Trout. They don't skim on the aural art, even with the more focused approach, making one a leaner effort, but just as much a masterpiece. Tracks include "Lick My Decals Off, Baby", "I Love You, You Big Dummy", "Bellerin' Plain", "Petrified Forest", and "The Smithsonian Institute Blues (Or The Big Dig)". Hypnotic sound library material from Italian composer Daniela Casa – some of her rarest work from the mid 70s – recorded in her home studio and never before released commercially! It's very compelling work, with a range of styles from minimalist soundtrack music, to fairly heavy psych, to sitar-driven strings, to airy flute pieces and beyond. It was recorded for use in radio, television and film, but it honestly works just as well as melodic, if experimental instrumentals that masterfully blends and straddles genres. The album sparkles with strong arrangements and production from James Carmichael – who furthers the vibe perfected on Natural High, yet continues to avoid most of the cliches that would slow down the group in later years. Lionel Richie's given room to step forth on the ballads "Still" and "Sail On" – but the group feel is still nicely maintained on the rest of the record – which also features the tracks "Getting It", "You're Special", "Wonderland", "Sexy Lady", and "Might Magic". Blue Thumb, 1978. Sealed ... $14.99
Hard to miss with The Crusaders at this point – and the album's one of their stone classics from the 70s – just the kind of soulful fusion that few other groups could touch! The core trio of Joe Sample's keyboards, Wilton Felder's saxes, and Stix Hooper's drums is augmented by the guitar of Billy Rogers and bass of Robert Popwell – both players who slide in warmly to the grooves, yet still help the combo keep that lean, funky sound they first forged after dropping the first word from their Jazz Crusaders name. Things are never slick at all, and the use of vocals and larger instrumentation is yet to come – leaving the album a tight, right, outta sight groover all the way through! De La Soul3 Feet High & Rising (blue & magenta vinyl pressing) ... LP
Tommy Boy, 1989. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... About December 31, 2022
The mindblowing classic debut of De La Soul! 3 Feet High And Rising is inarguably one of the most important records in hip hop history – with playful, endearingly oddball trio rhymes and Prince Paul production at it's most sprawlingly sampled and creative. It's got flat out classic songs that stand out well enough on their own, but it's also one of the greatest full length albums in hip hop history – featuring loosely connective skits with recurring characters that are vital to the experience. Last, but not least, 3 Feet. . .is especially fascinating given it's 1989 release year – a time when so many of the contemporaneous crews and solo MCs on both the east coast and west coast were going grittier, darker and more profane – but it doesn't feel like a conscious reaction to that, as much it feels like sharp trio and a brilliant producer carving out their own damn creative niche. Includes "Me, Myself & I", "The Magic Number", "Plug Tunin", "Say No Go", "Tread Water", "Eye Know", "Buddy" and much more! Double vinyl reissue – making it sound a heck of a lot better than the overly-compressed original vinyl, which could never handle all the music on the album! LP, Vinyl record album

Billy EckstineBilly Eckstine's Imagination ... CD
Mercury, 1958. Used ... $2.99
A beautiful pairing of the vocals of Billy Eckstine and the arranging talents of Pete Rugolo – a real standout set that's easily one of Eckstine's greatest albums ever! By the time of this set, Rugolo had made a great name for himself arranging other vocal sides for June Christy, The Four Freshmen, and others – and he's bringing a sense of poise and space to the album that's often missing from much of Billy's later work. The warm Eckstine voice is allowed plenty of space to do its thing here – floating out effortlessly over the larger orchestrations and gliding with the gentle darkness that first made him stand out from the pack so many years ago. There's nothing too fancy or fussy going on here, and Billy's performance is a key example of his strong talent for understatement at its best. Titles include "It Was So Beautiful", "I Got A Right To Sing The Blues", "Imagination", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "That's All", "I Cover The Waterfront", and "A Faded Summer Love". CD

Orrin EvansMagic Of Now ... CD
Smoke Sessions, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 17.99
Any record from pianist Orrin Evans is worth of attention – but this set might be worthy of a bit more, given that it features some really beautiful work from alto saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins – a player who's a perfect accompaniment for all the great ideas that Evans brings to his music! Immanuel's horn has all these sharp edges – currents that really set him apart from the rest, and make his voice known instantly when he appears on the tunes – often set up with those darkly rich lines that Evans can cast so well in a small group setting, which he does here on tunes penned both by himself and Wilkins. The pairing is wonderful – and balanced with work from Vicente Archer on bass and Bill Stewart on drums – on long, fresh tunes that include "Momma Loves", "MAT Matt", "Libra", "The Poor Fisherman", "Levels", and "Dave". Long Hair (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
The pants on the cover more than hint at the sound of the album – a free-flowing, very colorful set from this obscure German trio – and a record that's equally balanced between jazz and rock impulses, but which avoids any of the jazzrock cliches of the time! The group really don't sing at all – and instead find ways of weaving together organ, keyboards, bass, guitar, and lots of heavy drums – all with shifting time signatures and musical energy – produced to perfection by Conny Plank! The drums are quite strong – thanks to work from American musician Fred Braceful – and the whole thing is different than some of the spacier, looser albums from the German scene of the period. Titles include "Marilyn F Kennedy", "Da Da", "Groove", "Tango Wolperaiso", "Jam Factory For People Insane", "Habits", and "Dance Of The Crabs". LP, Vinyl record album

FCCDo You Believe In Magic ... LP
RCA, 1980. Near Mint- ... $4.99
They're not the same FCC that controls the airwaves in the US – but instead, the Funky Communications Committee – who work here with some great southern production from the team of Clayton Ivey and Terry Woodford! The record's got a glow that's kind of post-Muscle Shoals – maybe a bit more mainstream overall, but still showing the blend of soulful elements that came from that scene – which makes the whole thing way more of a soul set than you'd guess from the look of the group! The rhythms are great on many numbers – maybe not all-out funk, but certainly crafted with funky currents – and these guys have a way of harmonizing on the hooks that's mighty nice too. Titles include "Falling Out Of Love", "Jump Into The Fire", "Give Me A Reason", "Let The Love On Through", "Don't Hold Back", "Changes", and "How Do You Like Your Love". LP, Vinyl record album

Fantastic sounds from Flying Lotus – an artist who just keeps on pushing past any conventional expectations, to a point where his music is almost a genre unto itself! The record's got this very tripped-out sort of vibe – very much in keeping with the image on the cover – and while many others are exploring this territory of late, few ever even get close to the right sort of mix that's going on here – subtle elements of soul, funk, jazz, hip hop, and maybe a million other influences – all flowing through the double-length space of the set, as it Flying Lotus redefines the sound of soul in the modern age. The set's got guest work from Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, David Lynch, George Clinton, Anderson Paak, Little Dragon, Solange, and others – and titles include "Post Requisite", "Takashi", "Spontaneous", "More", "Burning Down The House", "Actually Virtual", "Find Your Own Way Home", "The Climb", "Debbie Is Depressed", "Black BAloons Reprise", and "Land Of Honey". FoxFox Box (Fox/Tails Of Illusion/Blue Hotel/Images/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
GTO/Cherry Red (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 4CD ... $19.99 38.99
A great box collection of work from Fox– a group who recorded a handful of albums in the mid 70s, all with kind of a post-glam production style that makes all the instruments come together in this cool wash of sound, which also works perfectly for the vocals of the female lead singer – the enigmatic Noosha! The tunes are catchy, but nicely not entirely commercial – really well put-together in the studio, thanks to Kenny Young's production, who's also in the group on second guitar – bowing nicely to the strong talents of Herbie Armstrong – who handles the lead with a nicely condensed sound that works perfectly for the group's approach. There's a charm here that's hard to describe – lost material between the early 70s pop years and the smoothness of AOR, with some of the best qualities of both – served up here with enough studio work that will make you a Kenny Young fan forever – on three full albums, Fox, Tails Of Illusion, and Blue Hotel – plus the bonus Images selection of other tracks, and other bonus tracks too – 56 tracks in all, with a big booklet of notes! ECM (Germany), 1980. Used ... $12.99
Moody atmospherics from the second wave of ECM – a spacious trio outing that features Charlie Haden on bass, Jan Garbarek on saxophones, and Egberto Gismonti on guitars and piano. With any other group of players, the setting might be a bit too spare and relaxed for our ears, but Gismonti really manages to work in some beautiful notes in the added room of the set – and Haden's basswork is exceptionally recorded, and tuned with that deepening sense of soul he brought to his later years so well. Garbarek's solos punctuate the quieter moments nicely – and titles include "Bailarina", "Magico", "Silence", "Spor", and "Palhaco". CD

Legere (France), 2021. New Copy ... $26.99 32.99
A goofy name, a goofy cover, but some mighty groovy music – served up with a sweet small combo sound that's heavy on really great organ lines! The Hamburg Spinners are plenty funky, but also aren't out to be the most hard-hitting funk act in the world – as they instead lay back, and let space come into their sounds in all the right ways – using the organ in a lean style that recalls Booker T during his early Stax Records years, mixed with equally well-crafted guitar, bass, and drums in the rhythms! Yet these guys aren't going for a slavish Memphis mode either, as the rhythms and overall execution also maybe seem a bit more like the use of a sweet organ combo in an Italian or British soundtrack of the 60s – with these wonderfully warm melodies that are totally great. Titles include "Jeanskutter", "Klar Zur Wende", "Die Grosse Flaute", "Captain Flamingo", "Windjammer Ahoi", "Durch Meer Der Quallen", and "Grottenrally". LP, Vinyl record album

Billie HolidayBillie Holiday – Remixed & Reimagined ... LP
Legacy, 2007. Near Mint- ... $59.99
Billie Holiday's probably reimagined here more than she's remixed – as most of the tracks are heavy on contemporary beats and breaks first, and tend to focus on the vocals second! Billie's older recordings are dropped into the mix to provide a bit of older flavor – sometimes used quite sparingly, sometimes a bit more in the spirit of the original songs – but still usually in a way that has the remixer emerg as the main star on each track. Titles include "All Of Me (Charles Feelgood & Gil rmx)", "Glad To Be Unhappy (DJ Logic rmx)", "Billie's Blues (Daniel Y rmx)", "You're So Desirable (Sunday People rmx)", "I Hear Music (Swingsett & Takuya's Mighty Fine rmx)", "Spreadin Rhythm Around (Lady Bug vs Lady Day RR rmx)", and "Travlin All Alone (Nickodemus & Zeb rmx)". Past Due, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $15.99
The full story of this really unique group – a soulful quartet who hail from San Antonio, but who have a rock-solid boogie sound that's like some of the best acts coming out of the east coast at the time! Horizon only issued a few indie label singles back in the day, but they've got a heck of a lot more to offer here – as the package includes ten never-issued cuts alongside their rare singles – all to paint a very vivid portrait of a group you'd never expect to hail from the southern side of Texas! The tracks are mostly upbeat and have a great clubby vibe – really well-crafted instrumentation over well-done arrangements – with vocals often harmonized by the group together with the lead – a soaring spirit that's clearly inspired by Earth Wind & Fire, but served up with a leaner sound overall, and a mode that's very much the group's own. Titles include "Lady Fantasy", "Over & Over", "Saving My Love For You", "Try My Love Again", "Rock It On Down", "Magic Music", "Feel The Funk", "Give It Up", "They Don't Make Em Like You", "Jen", "Let Me Be The One", "Snap To It", and "You Went Away". JazzanovaStrata Records – The Sound Of Detroit – Reimagined By Jazzanova ... CD
BBE (UK), 2022. New Copy ... $19.99
An incredible tribute to the legendary Strata Records in Detroit – performed by Jazzanova with a host of other guests – and at a level that's maybe the greatest thing the group has ever given us on record! The vibe here is a lot more Strata and spiritual than the style you'd expect from Jazzanova – as they take on tunes by label legends like Lyman Woodard, Kenny Cox, Sam Sanders, Maulawi, and other talents from the same Motor City underground of the 70s that gave the world Tribe Records. Instrumentation is a blend of Fender Rhodes and lots of live jazz work on flute, tenor, trombone, and trumpet – sometimes topped with vocals from Sean Haefeli, who really helps open up the soulful side of the tunes! Wonderful throughout, better than we might have even guessed – with titles that include "Joy Road", "Face At My Window", "Ortotundes", "Loser", "Scorpio's Child", "Creative Musicians", "Lost My Love", "Inside Ourselves", and "Saturday Night Special". Taschen, 2019. New Copy ... $15.99 20.00
A beautiful look at the American love of the exotic –a book that's overflowing with full color-images and a wealth of tiki-styled history! This book is way more than just another fluff piece on postwar tiki culture – and instead digs deep into the US fascination with Pacific culture – tracing its roots to exploratory efforts of the 19th Century, then showing the huge explosion in the 20th – as America began to annex Hawaii, and both WWII and the budding airline industry allowed US citizens to travel to the islands, and bring a fair bit of its culture back home! The presentation is in the best Taschen mode – glossy pages, filled with beautiful images and surprisingly strong writing, too – in chapters that cover topics that look at the Hawaiian music craze, tiki cocktail bars, exotic dining in America, exotica style, and celebrities' role in island culture – plus lots lots more. The book is over 600 pages – beautifully presented throughout. Book

Prestige/OJC, 1968. Used ... $8.99
Late 60s greatness from Pepper Adams – an overlooked session that's easily one of his most standout sides of the decade! There's an easygoing swing to the record that's simply wonderful – a well-blown sound that's never too overthought or academic – just pure proof of the sort of inroads that Pepper Adams made with the baritone sax back in the 50s, as he liberated the instrument from its work in the chorus to a fully-voiced solo instrument of its own! The other players certainly help contribute to the magic of the date – and in addition to a rhythm section that includes Tommy Flanagan on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, the set also features Zoot Sims on tenor, blowing with a tone that's almost as deep as Adams! Titles include "Cindy's Tune", "I've Just Seen Her", "Serenity", "Inanout", "Punjab", "Elusive", and "Verdandi". CD

Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". Great live work from the Cannonball Adderley Quintet – recorded during a time when the group's star was really rising on Capitol Records, but at a level that's got the more open-ended, freely-blown style of their classic concert dates for Riverside! The material here was all recorded for radio in Seattle, and the fidelity is excellent – sounds that are sharp as any of the group's key live albums of the period – with some very hip announcements between a few of the tracks! And unlike some radio live issues on the market, this one is nice and long – with eight long tracks that really open up – full of magical moments from Cannonball on alto, Nat Adderley on cornet, Joe Zawinul on piano, Victor Gaskin on bass, and Roy McCurdy on drums. Titles include "Sticks", "Big P", "The Girl Next Door", "Back Home Blues", "Hippodelphia", "74 Miles Away", "Morning Of The Carnival", and Somewhere". CD

A long-overdue session of ballads from modern tenor giant Eric Alexander – a player we've always loved for his soaring, leaping lines on soul jazz sets – but who also has just the right tone to carry off an album of mellow tunes and ballads! Alexander's tone reminds us a lot of the Sonny Rollins sound of the mid 60s – that perfect, yet never too-polished style that Sonny was using when re-interpreting standards in a masterful demonstration of space and economy. The tracks on this set are a well-chosen lot – and include 2 classic Mal Waldron ballads, "Left Alone" and "Soul Eyes", and Alexander's own track "Gently". Mindblowing sounds from Anteloper – a great side project from trumpeter Jaimie Branch, and one that lets her open up with lots of the more electronic sides of her spirit! The set's a collaboration with Jason Nazary – who adds in acoustic drums plus a host of electronics and effects – echoed by Branch, who blows her usual strong lead on trumpet upfront, but also works electronic magic too – so that the duo are creating in the best mix of live instrumentation, processing, and editing that have made the International Anthem label such a powerhouse in new waves of jazz in recent years. A lost heavy rock classic from the Dunwich Production team – recorded in Michigan, but with extra orchestral backing in Chicago – for an approach that gives the record a slightly pop quality that tempers the harder rock sound nicely. The songs are actually pretty catchy, in a post-Summer Of Love pop mode – and titles include "Magic Bed", "What's In My Mind's Eye", "Heart Attack", "Strange", "Thoughts & Feelings", and "Ode To Missy Mxyzosptlk". LP, Vinyl record album
(360 Sound stereo pressing with 1B matrix. Cover has a light crease across the center and a few small stickers on one corner. Label has a name in pen.)

Artifacts (Nicole Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, Mike Reed)And Then There's This ... LP
Astral Spirits, 2022. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Three really fantastic musicians – working together to turn out one the best records we've ever heard from any of them in years! Make no mistake, we love these guys in all sorts of other settings – but here, there's something really special, and definitely a cut above – this warm sense of spontaneous creation that almost seems to call up an image of the musicians as they work together – Mike Reed on drums, Tomeka Reid on cello, and Nicole Mitchell on flutes and electronics! There's a magic here that really represents the Chicago scene at its finest – the kind of sympathetic, respectful collaboration in which already-strong artists move each other forward together – a magic we hope you'll share on titles that include "AF", "Reflections", "No Side Effects", "JJ", "Soprano Song", "In Response To", and "Blessed". Ash Ra TempelLe Berceau De Cristal ... CD
MG Art (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $16.99
Fantastic sounds from this legendary duo – easily one of the most meditative, hypnotic acts of the Krautrock scene of the 70s! The music was scored for the film Le Berceau De Cristal, but has had a life long past the images on the screen – thanks to the sublime workings of organ and guitar lines from Manuel Gottsching and Lutz Ubrich – who used their instruments in a nicely abstracted way – so that they flow out in these beautiful waves of sound, mixing and bubbling with lots of other-worldly elements – on titles that include "L'Hiver Doux", "Le Songe D'Or", "Le Diable Dans La Mansion", "Silence Sauvage", and "Le Berceau De Cristal". ✨✧ Will AshonChamber Music – Wu-Tang & America In 36 Pieces (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 24.00
One of the most unique books we've ever read on the subject of hip hop – a volume that takes the Wu-Tang as its main touchstone, but which moves past any simple history or biography – and instead paints a very complex picture of music and culture in America through 36 different "chambers" – all interlocked essays that deal with urban space, technology, family, film, and other diverse topics that work together surprisingly well! Rather than attempt to take on the monolith that is the Wu-Tang Clan, author Will Ashon instead illuminates their universe – both the one that lead to their musical creations, and their reception – putting that legacy in great perspective with some wonderfully written prose! Hardcover edition is 374 pages, with some black and white images. Book

AthanorAthanor – Live At The Jazzgalerie Nickelsdorf 1978 ... CD
Black Monk (Austria), 1978. New Copy ... $8.99
Tremendous work by a jazz group we've not seen on any other records – working here in a set of live improvisations recorded in Austria in 1978! The sound is loose, but never entirely free jazz – as there's a good sense of rhythm to the group, hanging sometimes together in less-traditional ways – almost an Ornette-like way of the instruments coming together in these beautiful pulsations of sound! The lineup is unfamiliar to us, but these guys have a really fantastic sense of energy together – Harum Ghulam Barabbas on alto, Joseph Traindl on trombone, Richard Ahmad Pechoc on piano, and Muhammad Malli on drums and percussion – creating their own sort of magic on the set's six improvisations – all with very different flavors and lengths. Rhymesayers, 2008. Used ... $7.99
The indefatigable Atmosphere returns with its sixth proper album (and 198th if you include their always worthwhile vinyl only, web only, and otherwise underground releases – what's in that lemonade, anyway?) – and the dynamic duo is as hard hitting and cathartic as ever! Beatmaker Ant gets more and more diverse with his killer wall of sound – whether it's a busy tapestry or minimalist funk – and Slug's words and delivery are vivid as always. Tracks include "Like The Rest Of Us", "Puppets", "The Skinny", "Dreamer", "You", "Painting", "Your Glasshouse", "Wild Wild Horses", "Me", "In Her Music Box" and more. CD

✨✧ Atomic/School DaysNuclear Assembly Hall ... CD
Okka Disk, 2004. New Copy 2CD ... Just Sold Out!
A brilliant pairing of free jazz forces – the Chicago-based School Days group of Ken Vandermark, and the groundbreaking Atomic combo from the Nordic jazz underground! The players here are all very like-minded, and fold together beautifully – in an octet lineup that features reeds from Ken Vandermark and Frekerik Ljungkvist, trumpet from Magnus Broo, trombone from Jeb Bishop, piano from Havard Wiik, vibes from Kjell Nordeson, bass from Ingebrigt Haker Flaten, and drums from Paal-Nilssen Love! Both Flaten and Love would become frequent collaborators in Chicago over the years – but this set captures the meeting of the groups in a very fresh way – a double-length set that's all original material – with titles that include "W Meets A", "Transparent Taylor", "Ink Worm", "Kerosene", "Conjugations" and "Dog Days". ✨✧ David AxelrodEarth Rot – A Musical Comment On The State Of The Environment (with bonus instrumentals album) ... CD
Capitol/Now Again, 1970. New Copy ... $6.99 15.98
One of the most righteous, message-oriented albums ever from David Axelrod – and the third in his legendary trilogy of instrumental sets for Capitol Records! Earth Rot moves even past the modes of Songs Of Innocence and Songs Of Experience – to offer up a chilling message on the environment, circa 1970 – with beautiful arrangements in the best Axelrod tradition – performed by a large group of jazz players who mixes vibes, guitars, and off-kilter reeds – augmented by a group of singers who perform some of the lyrics of the set, most of which are adapted from the Old Testament and from Navajo legends! The record's broken into two long suites – "The Warnings" and "The Signs" – and the whole thing blends together in a spacey, other-worldly mix of heavy arrangements and trippy grooves! Amazing package – includes a full bonus LP of instrumental versions, appearing here for the first time ever – plus a huge 32 page booklet of notes and images! CD

Kevin AyersRainbow Takeaway ... LP
Harvest/EMI, 1978. Near Mint- ... $22.99
An overlooked album from Kevin Ayers – a record that's a bit out of time, given all the changes that were taking place in the UK scene – but which still has Ayers doing all those wonderful things that made his solo career so great! The tunes are fantastic – filled with unusual images, and that sense of removed wit that Kevin always had, and which always made him so far less indulgent than the rest of the prog generation. And while the cover and some of the production almost hint at an AOR approach, the whole thing instead is hiding with a more unique vision underneath – maybe in the way that Phil Manzanera could do the same on his late 70s albums. Like those records, there's a lot of elements here that are hard to compare to anything else – but in a good way, as that's always been the charm of Ayers. Titles include "Ballad Of A Salesman Who Sold Himself", "Rainbow Takeaway", "View From The Mountain", "Goodnight Goodnight", and "Hat Song". LP, Vinyl record album

A classic album of classy vocals – one that helped set a whole new tone in 80s soul music! Anita had already gained a bit of experience on the soul scene before this set, but with this record she emerged as a full-formed diva who could effortlessly blend jazz and soul into a magnificent new sound. The production has a few touches that date the record a bit, but there's a timelessness to the set that was apparent to listeners the moment it was released. Titles include "Mystery", "No One In The World", "Sweet Love", "You Bring Me Joy", and "Caught Up In The Rapture". LP, Vinyl record album

The Band's surprising step back to their roadhouse roots – paying homage to early rock and rhythm & blues the grew up on, and honed their chops on when in their years as The Hawks! Moondog Matinee features a few great covers that split the difference between the raucous energy of their inspirations, from Chuck Berry to Clarence Frogman Henry to Fats Domino to Junior Parker – and the well-oiled, multi-voice Band groove at near-peak form. Titles include "I Ain't Got No Home", "Holy Cow", "Share Your Thoughts", "Mystery Train", "Third Man Theme", "Promised Land", "The Great Pretender", "I'm Ready", "Saved" and "A Change Is Gonna Come". Peter BardensAnswer ... LP
Verve/Long Hair (France), 1970. New Copy ... $29.99 34.99
Fantastic solo work from Peter Bardens – an artist who'd later gain fame as the lead singer of Camel, but who's even more fantastic here on his own – working in a trippy blend of modes that's equally balanced between prog and psych! Bardens plays organ on most of the tracks, but he uses the instrument in ways that are very different from the more R&B-inspired Hammond lines of the mod generation – often tightly fused with the sublime guitar of Andy Gee, a player who's got this sharp sound that's full of chromatic hues that really resonate with the keys of the organ – as the pair take off in this soaring groove that's occasionally a bit funky, always a bit trippy, and which gets a great kick from bass, drums, and percussion – plus support vocals from Linda Lewis and Steve Ellis. The album's really something special – great all the way through – and titles include "The Answer", "Homage To The God Of Light", "I Don't Want To Go Home", "I Can't Remember", "Let's Get It On", and "Don't Goof With A Spook". Verve, 1963. Near Mint- ... $3.99
Basieland in the 60s – a very nice place to be! This excellent Verve session features the highly pyrotechnic Basie 60s ensemble really letting loose – complete with great horn work by Frank Foster, Frank Wess, and Eric Dixon on reeds – all of whom bring a very soulful edge to the proceedings, and blow these strong sharp lines over the album's great arrangements from Billy Byers. Byers also wrote all the tunes too – making the set one of those great Basie albums that overflows with fresh new songs that continually redefine the Count's groove. Tracks are short and tight, but have some wonderful horn charts that really explode with magical energy – and titles include "Sassy", "Wanderlust", "Instant Blues", "Basie Land", "Big Brother", and "Yuriko". Count BasieLil Ol Groovemaker Basie! ... LP
Verve, 1963. Very Good+ ... $9.99
Count Basie and Quincy Jones were always a mighty mighty combination – and there's no finer proof of that fact than this sweet little set! Quincy had a way of swinging Basie's group even more than Neal Hefti did – really letting the piano step out front, and swinging the larger horn parts in this mode that was extremely soulful, yet never with the hoke that could sometimes mar a Basie set – a style that was very 60s groovy, and which really helped breathe new life into the Count's ensemble! The album's a killer all the way through – and the tunes are all originals – written by Quincy, and arranged especially for the set – great little numbers that include "Nasty Magus", "Dum Dum", "Boody Rumble", "Count Em", "Belly Roll", and "Lil Ol Groovemaker Basie"! Rubens BassiniRitmo Fantastico ... CD
Whatmusic (UK), 1960. Used ... $11.99
Fantastic rhythms from percussionist Rubens Bassini – a set that has all the raw live energy of a Latin jazz jam session, but which also carries some of the sweet touches of the bossa nova scene in Brazil – a really wonderful mixing of modes that makes the album a gem all the way through! Rubens plays with the fire you'd expect from his image on the cover – bringing a lot more lively percussion to the record than usual for a Brazilian jazz set of the time – while the larger backings shade things in on some sweet colors – with a nice mix of piano, woodwinds, and some especially great vibes! The record's an excellent jammer that takes a bossa nova groove, and infuses it with some heavier Afro-Cuban rhythms – creating a jazzy style stuffed with infectious changes – on titles that include "Coco Seco", "Barquinho", "Cuban Mambo", "Mirage", "Maria Conga", "Mensagem", "Love For Sale", "Quem Quiser", and "Ceu E Mar". Great stuff all around – recorded in Brazil in 1960, and with not a dead track on the album! CD

Basso Valdambrini QuintetFonit H602/603 (with bonus CD) ... LP
Schema (Italy), 1970. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $32.99 34.98
Wonderful work from one of the greatest Italian jazz groups of the 60s – heard here in two of their rarest recordings! The set brings together material from two sessions that were only issued on the Fonit sound library label – but both are every bit as sharp and soulful as the best Basso-Valdambrini work for bigger labels – including their early 60s gems on RCA! And like those records, there's a wonderful sense of rhythm here – kind of the soul jazz side of Blue Note, but handled with a fresh sound that's nicely free of any copycat cliches – and which instead really has the group finding their own voice through their writing and solos. The H602 album is billed as "pop jazz" – which is more a 60s soul jazz style – and H603 is called "Californiano", with a bit of a west coast vibe, but still very much the best grooves we've come to love from the combo. The lineup on both includes tremendous trumpet from Oscar Valdabrini and tenor from Gianni Basso – with rhythms from Ettore Righello on piano, Giorgio Azzolini on bass, and Lionella Bionda on drums. Titles include "Pick Up", "Glaucus", "Gold Mine", "From Me", "Maglione", "Muy", "Plinius", and "Transistor". LP, Vinyl record album
(Includes bonus CD of the entire record too!)
