Warren ZevonExcitable Boy (glow in the dark vinyl pressing) ... LP
Elektra/Rhino, 1978. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99
An early moment of genius from Warren Zevon – the kind of record that really set his talents part from the singer/songwriter generation that came before – and made Zevon a key part of a new era of much darker songsmiths! Zevon manages to weave in all these strange moody elements while still delivering songs that are tuneful – often with studio talent that goes back to an earlier generation of LA polish, but which manages to have a bit more edge here in Warren's company. The lasting highlight of the record is probably the oft-played "Werewolves Of London" – but the whole thig is filled with gems – titles that include "Accidentally Like A Martyr", "Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner", "Nighttime In The Switching Yard", "Tenderness On The Block", "Veracruz", and "Lawyers Guns & Money". Montgomery ExpressMontgomery Express Does Party Fever & Other Songs Of The Montgomery Movement ... CD
Folkways, 1974. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.99
A massive lost funk classic – one of those rarer than rare albums that's well worth the fuss! The Montgomery Express were a Florida combo who played on the state's small club circuit – working equally well on their own, or backing up a number of better known singers. The group's got a diversity that's really great – and they're equally well-suited to longer, trippier funk instrumentals, and shorter more soul-based tunes. The vocal numbers are especially haunting, as they've got a moody and sad feel that's more like New Jersey or Detroit group soul of the time than the usual Miami soul – and the funkier tunes have a nice psychedelic approach that uses plenty of sweetly-tuned guitar! 8 tracks in all – "Party Fever", "Precious Wing", "Montgomery Movement", "Gotta Make A Comeback", "Who", "Steal Away", "I'm Standing By", and "Left Me With A Memory". ✨✧ Bilal AbdurahmanEchoes Of Timbuktu & Beyond In Congo Square ... CD
Folkways, 1979. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A beautifully poetic take on the transplantation of African sounds in the US scene – played on a variety of different instruments by Bilal Abdurahman! The tracks are mostly short, percussive ones – with the strongest focus on instrumentation, but with occasional vocal refrains from Bilal – usually in wordless or chanted form, although there's a few nice spoken bits too! Instrumentation is quite diverse – and includes balafon, xalam, and even Ugandan harp – on titles that include "Spirits Of Congo Square", "Ancestral Ode", "Fusion", "Congo Square Procession", "Lament", "Blues Is Born", and "Gogi Solo". Alessandro AlessandroniTrip Around The World ... LP
Stella/Saar Milano (Italy), 1973. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
Beautiful sounds from one of the coolest Italian composers of all time – one of our go-to favorites for both soundtrack and sound library material! This set has Alessandro Alessandroni hitting some sweet 70s modes – funky at times, slinky and sexy at others – all with this fantastic ear for sound and space, with a quality level that really sets him apart – and which makes this totally obscure gem every bit as great as some of the key Italian cinematic classics from the period! Imagine – you're working in the very solitary space of a sound library, knowing that you're going to make a record that will never be for sale in the record racks – yet you completely bring your a-game to the proceedings. That's what makes Alessandroni such a giant – and we're sure you'll agree once you hear this music! The set features some great harmonica bits from Gianfranco Di Lelio, plus cool keyboards, guitar, and titles that include "My Sitar", "Seven Steps", "A Day In The Sun", "Oceano", "Everest", "Beach Party", "Summer Breeze", "Desert Inn", and "Love On The Sand". ✨✧ Amiri Baraka, Jayne Cortez, & OthersBefore Columbus Foundation ... CD
Folkways, 1980. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A hip batch of underground poetry tracks – collected together by the Before Columbus Foundation, a group dedicated to promoting the works of African-American and Native American artists! Despite the 1980 date, the collection has a feel that's similar to earlier righteous poetry albums on the Folkways label – proof that the flames were still burning strong in the underground, even though artists such as these weren't getting as much mainstream attention at the end of the 70s! Most readings are recorded live, with a relatively spare, stark sound – and performances include "Dope" by Amiri Baraka, "St Louis Woman" by Ishmael Reed, "For The Poets" by Jayne Cortez, "Bark Is What Us Dogs Do" by David Meltzer, "Flipochinos, Being Your Woman, & Pacific Lover" by Cyn Zarco, and "Artist/Art This" by Victor Hernandez Cruz. Barons, Dominoes, Queenettes, & OthersRoots – Rhythm & Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1966. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. BatsumiBatsumi (140 gram vinyl) ... LP
Matsuli (UK), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $26.99
One of the most compelling albums we've heard from the African scene of the 70s – a rare set from a Soweto group, and one that's got a heavy dose of spiritual jazz in the mix! The album almost feels more like the kind of set you'd hear by a Paris group, extrapolating African sounds in the post-colonial era – or an American group, inspired by roots from the homeland – and the group sports some especially great work on tenor, played by Themba Koyana, a player we've never heard before! Rhythms are great, with lots of percussion, and some nice funky undercurrents at times – and other instrumentation includes organ, which often works well with the echoey production. The album does have some occasional vocals, but the main focus is instrumental, which is very jazzy too – and titles include "Itume Leng", "Anishilabi", "Lishonile", and "Emampondweni". Red CampNew Clavichord ... CD
Cook, 1957. New Copy ... $8.99 16.98
An insane album of keyboard tracks – almost as if Sun Ra was taking on an electrified version of boogie woogie! Pianist Red Camp's been recorded by the Cook label before, but this set features Red handling the clavichord – an instrument that's like a harpsichord, with a similar metallic sound overall! The approach is very odd – as Camp's work on the keys is quite dynamic and jamming, hardly the sort of take on the instrument you might expect, and one that really pushes its tones into weirdly distorted range – almost like Ra's use of the rocksichord on some of his 70s albums. The sound is amazing, and the record's unlike anything else we've heard from the time – and titles include "The Bluesando", "Nagasaki", "Alma Llanera", "Slow Slow Blues", "Prelude For Twelve Fingers", and "Twofer Atonement". A pretty cool collection produced by Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee – focusing on famous speeches by important female African-Americans – mostly focusing on the civil rights era, but also featuring an early speech by Ida B Wells. Ruby reads the speeches, and works include "I Am A Black Revolutionary Woman (1971)" by Angela Davis, "The Right To A Decent Life & Human Dignity (1971)" by Coretta Scott King, "It Is Time For A Change (1969)" by Shirley Chisolm, and "Lynching, Our National Crime (1901)" by Ida B Wells. Nancy DupreeGhetto Reality ... CD
Asch/Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
Kind of silly – but also pretty darn hip! Nancy Dupree was one of the most righteous music teachers you could ever have – and here, she's working with some young kids from the rough side of Rochester, in an album of simple tunes that have a surprisingly soulful edge to them. Nancy plays piano, and the kids sing either solo or in ensemble format. The record's got a starkness that's extremely compelling, and it's a lot stronger than we expected, even if it's not like some of the funky stuff on the Folkways label. Includes a song called "James Brown" that has all the kids making grunts and groans ala 60s James, then singing about his shift from a process to an afro! Other titles include "I Want", "What Do I Have?", "Bag Snatchin", and "Docta King". CD

✨✧ Entourage Music & Theater EnsembleEntourage ... CD
Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 15.99
Beautiful sounds from the Entourage ensemble – a record that's got a really meditative blend of acoustic elements with a few electric touches – used in ways that start in jazz, then move way beyond! Instrumentation includes guitar, flute, keyboards, violin, and mbira – coming together with really unusual inflections that are partly borrowed from Eastern sources – like Noh theater, or Balinese music – but which unfurl with a more freewheeling, American underground vibe as well! No sounds are ever too sharp, and there's almost a hint of the instrumental experiments in the 80s underground – such as work by Penguin Cafe Orchestra or Soft Verdict – but with an earthier feel overall. Titles include "Jattle Boxes", "Giraffes", "Solo For Electric Viola", "Michael's Song", "Silver Drum", and "Percussion Dance". CD

Sarah Webster FabioJujus – Alchemy Of The Blues ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy Gatefold ... $8.99 16.98
An incredible album, and very unique! Sarah Webster Fabio was a hip 70s poet with a very righteous sound – and she's working here with funky backings by a tight group that includes family members, in a style that's similar to early 70s work by artists like Wanda Robinson and Camille Yarborough – both of whom also mixed together funk and poetry! The album's got a massive funky cut called "Sweet Songs" – the kind of groover we never tire of, with tight drums, great guitar, and wonderful vocals by Sarah herself. There's lots of other great tunes too – with titles that include "Juju For Grandma", "Still A Red Hot Axe", "Chromo", "If We Come As Soft Rain", and "Jujus/Alchemy Of The Blues". CD

Edgar HendricksEdgar Hendricks Sings For The Very Young ... CD
Folkways, 1976. New Copy ... $6.99 16.98
A really unusual concept for a soul record, but one that works wonderfully all the way through – a mix of kid-oriented themes and warmly expressive vocals – with a vibe that almost feels like a hip 70s singer recording an album for Sesame Street! Edgar Hendricks works with just congas, bass, and piano on most tracks – this very cool, open approach that really demands a lot from his vocals – which rise to the occasion, and provide all these powerful, positive inflections on lyrics that most other singers would have just taken in a much straighter way! The result is very cool, and very special – like Bill Withers recording a special for the Children's Television Workshop in the 70s – with titles that include "The Bee & The Boy", "A Good Education Will Help You Through Life", "Song Of The Alphabets", "Let's Play A Circle Game", "Counting From One To Ten", and "Message To All Young People". ✨✧ Langston HughesRhythms Of The World ... CD
Folkways, 1955. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A really wonderful record – and one that maybe brings together a few key strands of the Folkways Records magic – as the album features narration by Langston Hughes, based on his First Book Of Rhythms book – layered with sound effects, folk songs, and music from around the world – all put together in this wonderful sonic pastiche! Much as we love Langston's writings, we especially love his voice – and the record is almost like some global folk take on the area that Hughes explored in a jazz vein with Charles Mingus around the same point in his career. The set is one continuous very cool record – narrated by Langston Hughes, but featuring global music as well! There are songs at points, but the whole thing is really one continuous soundpiece, in the best Folkways tradition. CD

Folkways, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 16.99
A great little 70s album of electric blues – a set that begins with a song about Watergate – then moves off into a whole other great range of themes too! Bob Kirkpatrick's got a vibe here that's in the better style of the small club scene of Detroit or Chicago at the time – lean, gritty, and with vocals wrapped around his guitar in a really wonderful way – getting support from a slightly unusual trio that features Jothan Callins on bass, Ron Burton on piano, and Harold White on drums – two of whom you'll know from work in spiritual jazz! Titles include "Watergate Blues", "Sweet Little Angel", "I Don't Know Why", "When The Sun Rose This Morning", "I Been Down So Long", and "I Got Love". CD

A beautiful little record – one that features cascading tones from the strings of the kora, mixed with occasional vocal moments too! The album was recorded in Dakar and Brikama in the mid 70s – and is maybe the start of a great run of later sessions that found a way of taking this amazing instrument to a wider audience – opening up the ringing, many-stringed tones of the kora with fidelity that really lives up to the tonal complexities of well-played performances like these. Some of the songs are quite long, and have a very hypnotic vibe – and titles include "Tutu Jara", "Sutukung Kumbu Sora & Solo", "Darisalami Amad Fal", and "Yeyengo High Life Tune". CD

Nadi QamarNuru Taa African Musical Idiom – Played On The Mama Likembi ... CD
Folkways, 1975. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A rare solo album from Nadi Qamar – an artist who's probably best known for his brief piano appearance with Charles Mingus, but who's working here on the Mama Likembi – an instrument of his own creation that's kind of like a big kalimba! From the information in the notes, it appears that the instrument is kind of an assemblage of smaller kalimbas – tuned pieces of metal over soundboards with hollow spaces – played simultaneously by Qamar with a really wonderful sound – haunting, and evocative, and even more stripped down than Phil Cohran's "On The Beach"! Titles include "After Glow", "Earth Quintessence", "California Sutra #2", "Australian Seascape", and "Tribute To Art Tatum". CD

JD RobbElectronic Music From Razor Blades To Moog ... CD
Folkways, 1970. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
A great entry in the "intro to electronic music" style that was popular at the end of the 60s – and like others in the genre, a set that seems to use each new track to demonstrate certain aspects of electronic music! Techniques include tape echoes, moogy passages, and even stereo separation effects – and lots of wonderful analogue electronics from JD Robb! The date of the work is 1970, but the approach is a bit older – almost abstract, and very concerned with sonic textures and space – but also playfully assembled, at a level that's fairly tuneful for most of the set – even though there's not really that many "songs" to speak of. Titles include "Collage No 2", "Spatial Serenade (excerpt)", "Green Mansions", "Analogies", "Les Ondes Martenot", and "Transmutations For Orchestra". CD

Folkways, 1957. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A vivid audio document of New York City in the late 50s – put together by creative sound recorder Tony Schwartz! The set's one of a few amazing albums put together by Schwartz – who spent a lot of time on the streets with his microphones and recorder, then really got creative putting the whole thing together in the studio – so that there's some good structure, and almost a sense of narrative to the record – yet in a way that also preserves all of the vivid, spontaneous aspects of the "on the street" recordings. Schwartz narrates a bit, includes some interviews, background sounds from certain areas of the city, and a range of performances in styles that run from jazz to folk to gospel and beyond! CD

Tony SchwartzNew York 19 ... CD
Folkways, Mid 50s. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A very cool document of New York in the 50s! Tony Schwartz turns the Folkways ethnographic microphone to the streets of the city – and comes up with amazing sounds and audio documents of life in the Big Apple – specifically, all material recorded in postal zone 19 – hence the title of the album! There's a fair bit of unusual things going on here – spoken bits, sound effects, and a variety of music from different sources – street preachers, jukeboxes, corner instrumentalists, and even some work by the legendary Moondog – who was maybe more of a figure on the New York streets of the 50s than he was a force in the concert halls and recording studios! Schwartz really gets at the cultural melting pot of the city over the course of the record – weaving together elements of Puerto Rican, Italian, Romanian, Jewish, Nigerian, and other cultures. CD

Great work from Tony Schwartz – one of the most compelling artists to ever record for the Folkways Records label, and almost more of a filmmaker than anything else! The set's a compelling audio documentary on the new and growing community of Puerto Rican residents in New York – particularly those in upper Manhattan – and it mostly features spoken passages by new immigrants, older residents of the city, and some who were opposed to the changing social scale – all with fascinating details about the struggles and triumphs of this growing side of the city. Most tracks are relatively short – there's 36 in all – and the recording quality really reflects that many voices involved in the project, with some great on-site elements, and a few other sonic surprises along the way! One of the highlights is as speech in which the platform of the Black Panther party is enumerated, with its 10 point program. A really unusual music from the duo of Jaribu and Ngoma Hill – a pair who work together here in a mode that's partly the acoustic blues of the rural scene in the south, but fused with more urban elements too – including a bit of gospel spirit, and folk-inspired righteousness! As you might guess from their name, these guys have a fair bit of message in their music – delivered maybe with even more power in this setting than if they had a larger group behind them – as the duo vocals and acoustic guitar seem to be more than enough to get the meaning across! Monitor, 1975. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A really unique little record – an album of original songs based on older tradition, and one that interweaves elements of Portuguese culture with deeper roots of Angolan music! Lilly Tchiumba penned all the tracks herself, and sings in the Angolan language of Kimbundu – but there's a mix of percussion, guitar, and soaring vocals that echoes strongly with rootsier Brazilian, Cuban, and Haitian styles too – maybe in part because the Monitor label did such a wonderful job of recording the songs, and giving them this righteous, powerful vibe that still holds up strongly over the years! And by all of that, we almost mean that there's this sort of trans-global power to the whole record – one that moves beyond just a regional expression of culture, and past any sort of basic ethnographic mode – a lot like the Songs Of Protest album by Zelia Barbosa, also on the Monitor label. Titles include "Manazinha", "Gilagi Bu Kanga", "N'Zambi", "Mona Ki N'Gui Xissa", "Luanda M'Bolo", and "Kubata Di Rosinha". CD

Scott WalkerStretch/We Had It All ... CD
BGO (UK), 1973/1974. New Copy ... $8.99
A pair of great early 70s efforts from the always unpredictable Scott Walker – 1973's Stretch and We Had It All from '74! Both records are Scott's tribute to modern country, with songs written by Jerry Reed, Tom T Hall, Billy Joe Shaver and others like that, along with tunes by writers Scott had covered before, such as Randy Newman and Jimmy Webb. Stretch may have seemed like a pretty remarkable creative stretch from the kind of haunting emotionalism and soaring, darkness-tinged pop of his earlier solo efforts, but there's a pretty direct line in some ways. His inimitably expressive voice carries the mood, with folksier touches to the songcraft and production paired with the occasionally lusher strings and other grand touches. We Had It All has a similar vibe, with Scott pulling off touching country balladry and rollicking stripped down jams just as well. 21 tracks in all: Sunshine", "Just One Smile", "Use Me", "Where Love Has Died", "Low Down Freedom", "We Had It All", "What Ever Happened To Saturday Night", "Old Five And Dimers Like Me", "Delta Dawn" and more. Mary, 1963. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
A landmark album – and one of the best records you'll ever find by Mary Lou Williams! The record's a mixture of jazz and spiritual themes, and it features Mary Lou's piano set in some super-hip jazz arrangements that include players like Grant Green, Budd Johnson, Larry Gales, Melba Liston, Ben Tucker, and Percy Heath. The bass and piano work is amazing, and many tracks have a dark groove that's very subtle, but very compelling. About half the tunes feature hip choral vocalizing – in the mode of some of the Donald Byrd or Max Roach albums from the same time – mostly handled by the group of Howard Roberts. Includes the classic groover "A Grand Nite For Swinging", plus "A Fungus Amongus", "Anima Christi", "Miss DD", "The Devil", "It Ain't Necessarily So", and "My Blue Heaven". An amazing 3CD set, put together from mid 50s recordings by Unesco – and featuring one of the richest looks at Indian music we've ever heard! The collection is much more ethnographic than the better-circulated Indian recordings of the time – and although the word "classical" is used in the title, the overall feel is often quite rootsy – filled with earthy percussion, raw vocal passages, and some especially captivating use of flute! Nothing too dirty about this jazz – especially considering that the "south" in the title is actually the Caribbean – an overlooked hotbed of creative improvisational activity! The album's similar to some of the other Caribbean jazz recorded by Cook Records at the time – highly rhythmic, with a somewhat exotic feel – but the music here is also a bit more conventionally jazz-based at times, with echoes of older swing and trad modes mixed in with rougher percussion on the bottom. There's some great sax parts at times – nice and snakey – and titles include "Serenade", "Kiss Me In the Country", and "Mme Kilio" by Cyril Diaz; "Vicki" and "Cook's Cooking" by Johnny Gomez, "My Salty Sin" and "Choro" by John Buddy Williams, "All Of Me" by Conrad Jones, and "Jungle Blues" by Lorna Pierre. Folkways, 1967. New Copy Gatefold ... $7.99 16.98
A wonderful collection of early electronic music – issued by the less-high tech Folkways label, but every bit as compelling as similar collections from bigger labels at the time! Most of the work was composed in the 50s and early 60s, and is from the Electronic Music Studio at the University of Toronto – one of the key academic outposts for the style in its pre-commercial years. Composers include Myron Schaffer, Arnold Walter, Harvey Olnick, and Hugh Le Caine – all working in weird tones and sounds that remind us a lot of the best early work of Pierre Henry. There's some great tracks, including "The Orgasmic Opus", "Dripsody", "Inferno", "Noesis", "Summer Idyll", "Collage", and "Pinball" – which features only sounds from pinball machines! CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Bentley/blocGLOBAL, 1989. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 27.99
A great indie set from the early years of the gangsta scene – a record that was maybe overlooked a bit at the time, and which maybe was trying a bit too hard with its posed cover image – but which, after the passage of years, has this great sort of upfront, earnest approach to the material that makes the whole thing surprisingly endearing! Awesome Dre produces himself here – working with fast rhymes over hyped-up beats – on titles that include "Murder One", "Executioner Style", "Master Of Philology", "Killer On Wax", "Committing Rhymes", and "You Can't Hold Me Back". Mondo, 2020. New Copy ... $30.99 34.99
A great vintage-styled soundtrack from Scott Bomar – served up with just the right 70s vibe to fit the mood of Eddie Murphy's biopic on Rudy Ray Moore – with plenty of cinematic funky tunes in the mix, and a few nice scene-setting numbers too – plus vocal performances by Eddie Murphy, Craig Robinson, and Bobby Rush! The vocal tracks are in the minority – most of the set focuses on the instrumentals, which evoke blacksploitation styles, but never in a way that's too slavish – and one track even features a guest appearance by the legendary Fred Wesley. Titles include "Dolemite", "Ballad Of A Boy & Girl", "The Dunbar Hotel", "Liquor Store Wisemen", "Recording Comedy", "I'm Gonna Kill Dolemite", "Leaving", "Phone Call", and "New House Record/Walkin". Westbound/4 Men With Beards, 1970. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $19.99 23.98
An insane classic from one of the wildest funk bands ever! According to reports, George Clinton and the band cut this set in a marathon 48-hour stretch in the studio – working like mad all night and day long, after dropping a motherlode of some mighty fine acid! We don't know if that story's entirely true, but the music on the album certainly backs it up – as it's some of the band's freest, most open-ended, most heavy-jamming work ever recorded! Guitars dominate over funky bass and drums – and the whole thing's an amazing blend of music, swirled together into a non-stop psychedelic party that includes P-Funk gems like "Funky Dollar Bill", "Free Your Mind", "Eulogy and Light", and "I Wanna Know If It's Good To You". GroupiesPrimitive (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beat Rocket, 1967. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
Not the girl groupies of backstage legend, but a really great late 60s group from New York – one who work with some of the same raw, pre-punk energy as The Stooges or The Seeds! Like both of those groups, these guys come from garage roots, but are really hitting an edge on these tracks – coming across with a lot more attitude, and this snide, sneering style that makes their work feel a fair bit more dangerous than most acts from a year or two before – a quality that holds even when the group are taking on tunes by other groups too! The Groupies are best known for their cut "Primitive", which kicks off this set – but the package features all other known tracks by the quintet – including "Little Baby", "It's Gonna Work Out Fine", "It's Too Late", "Down In The Bottom", "Hog", "You'll Be Mine", "I'm A Man", "Goin Down Slow", and "You Changed Again". Satisfaction UnlimitedThink Of The Children (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Hot Wax/Demon (UK), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99
A really compelling little set from Satisfaction Unlimited – a group we only know from this one corker of a record on the Hot Wax label! The style's a bit in some of the harmony modes of the east coast scene of the time – yet like most Hot Wax/Invictus work, there's also a bit of an odd twist too – a quality that's hard to peg in words, but which is sometimes slightly trippy, other times warmly soulful – almost a Cali indie sort of vibe – with a bit of sunshine that breaks through amidst some of the darker, heavier themes of the record. There's plenty of great numbers with a catchy vibe that could have almost gotten these guys the radio play of some of the RCA groups of the time – and titles include "Time For Us", "Think of The Children", "Bright City Lights", "Let's Change The Subject", "Come On Back", and "Why". Blue Note (Japan), 1957. Used ... $11.99
Jimmy Smith live was a killer – especially in the early days, when this one was recorded! Back in the late 50s, when Jimmy was shocking the world with his fantastically creative approach to the organ, Blue Note cut some of the first strong-selling live albums by following Jimmy to the clubs – where he would really let loose with some incredible work on the Hammond B3. The albums recorded that time shine far brighter than Jimmy's studio work – as Smith really opens up on nice long tracks, working with his trio that features Eddie McFadden on guitar and Donald Bailey on drums. Titles on this first volume include "After Hours", "My Funny Valentine", "Slightly Monkish", and "Laura". CD

Blue Note, 1963. New Copy (reissue)... On September 25, 2020
A classic Blue Note meeting of two of the label's top talents in the early 60s – Hammond hero Jimmy Smith, and the up-and-rising Stanley Turrentine on tenor! Turrentine's simply great at this point – playing with a raspy edge on the bottom of his tone, sounding dark and mysterious – not nearly as sweet as in later years – and Smith is wonderful too – still with traces of the rough experimental approach to the Hammond that he used in his first few Blue Note sides, but with a bit more of a defined and swinging sound – all given a nice kick by the drums of Donald Bailey and guitar of Quentin Warren. Titles include "Stone Cold Dead in the Market", "Red Top", "Prayer Meetin", "I Almost Lost My Mind", and "Picknickin'". LP, Vinyl record album

Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic EchoesExpansions (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1975. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 24.99
Quite possibly the most celebrated album ever from keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith – a groove-heavy classic that's burned up many a dancefloor in its day, yet also a record that features some great mellow moments as well! The title track "Expansions" is virtually a blueprint for the migration of the cosmic jazz sound onto the dancefloor – a tune that's as funky as it is righteous – but other cuts on the album slow down the pace a bit too, and show off the mellower, more introspectively spiritual side that's always made Lonnie way more than just a funky jazz artist. Easily the best place to start in the all-great Lonnie Liston Smith catalog – and featuring tracks that include "Expansions", "Summer Days", "Desert Nights", "Shadows", "My Love", "Peace", and "Voodoo Woman". Flying Dutchman/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $34.99 44.99
Lonnie Liston Smith is really tightening up his groove on this one – bringing a bit more funk into the mix, and creating that amazingly sweet glide in his keyboard sound! The record's still steeped in the righteous influences of years past, but it brings the message out to a bigger audience – letting soul flow into the jazz-based tunes in the same way that Norman Connors was doing at the time – and creating the same sort of warm glow through a mix of earthy percussion and electric keys. Vocals on most numbers are by Donald Smith, who has a great approach that has the depth of Leon Thomas but the warm focus of Michael Henderson – and he's a perfect fit for Lonnie's well-crafted tunes on the set! Titles include the nicely breaking "Devika", plus "A Chance For Peace", "Colors of The Rainbow", "Visions Of A New World", and the killer mellow track "Summer Nights", a very warm electric piano cut, with a nice sort of "Summer Madness" feel! A great second set from this group led by tenorist Walter Smith III and guitarist Matthew Stevens – music that rings out with a really beautiful, resonant sound right from the very first note – a unique blending of the two instruments, in ways that often have lots of edges and angles on the guitar, warmed up nicely by the tenor! Other group members include Micah Thomas on piano, Linda May Han Oh on bass, and Nate Smith on drums – and the tunes bubble and pulsate with really fresh, unique rhythms that match the energy of the tenor and guitar, as the group make their way through some well-penned tunes by both Smith and Stevens. Ike TurnerEdge (limited edition LP sleeve pressing) ... CD
Fantasy/Culture Factory (France), 1980. New Copy ... $4.99 14.98
One of the last Ike Turner albums to contain lead vocals by Tina – a set from the start of the 80s, issued right before Tina hit that huge solo career on her own! Tina's vocals come in early and are in very much in fine form – more in the mode she'd use on records to come than her sound back in the day, but lacking nothing at all in terms of her phrasing – even when Ike and the group take on tunes by some of the pair's contemporaries like Bill Withers, Shirley Caesar, and Elton John! Side two has Ike stepping into the vocal spotlight – a shift that may well have come from the rift between the two at the time – but his appearance is actually a great thing, and maybe creates a bit of freshness as he works here to front the Home Grown Funk band. Those tunes have more of an 80s funk approach – often with heavy basslines – and Ike tunes include "Lum Dum", "Party Vibes", "No Other Woman", and "I Can't Believe" – while Tina titles include "Lean On Me", "Use Me", "Shame Shame Shame", "Philadelphia Freedom", and "Only Women Bleed". Fantastic material from the Art Ensemble Of Chicago – tracks recorded during their same crucial Paris trip of 1969 that also gave the world the better-known BYG/Actual albums – but delivered in a style that's slightly different overall! There's maybe more of the cerebral side of the group at play here – that great love of small shifts, textures, and instrumental interplay – similar, maybe, to their People Of Sorrow album at times – but with a lot more force, especially in the freer moments. In addition to bass, Malachi Favors plays electric bass, sitar, and banjo – all worth the price of admission alone – and Lester Bowie plays trumpet, flugelhorn, and other instruments, while Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman handle a variety of reeds and percussion. ✨✧ Art BlakeyArt Blakey & The New Jazz Men – Live In Paris 1965 (180 gram pressing) ... LP
SAM (France), 1965. New Copy ... $29.99
One of the most unusual recordings we've ever heard from legendary drummer Art Blakey – not a Jazz Messengers session, but a rare Parisian performance by a quintet billed as the New Jazz Men! The lineup is fantastic – Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Nathan Davis on tenor, Jaki Byard on piano, and Reggie Workman on bass – players who express more modern intentions at times than some of Blakey's usual lineups – and who definitely earn the "new jazz" of their name – as they stretch out here on three long tracks that are superbly recorded by French radio ORTF! Hubbard is tremendous – really finding himself at this point in his career, and full of new phrasing and amazing sounds that really blow us away – and Davis is a real treat in this setting, which is every bit as great as his key overseas recordings of the period. Titles include a side-long version of "Crisis" – plus long readings of "The Hub" and "Blue Moon" – all wonderful! LP, Vinyl record album

Mute, Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99 22.98
Early and amazing sounds from electronic genius Chris Carter – material recorded in his home studio during the mid 70s – with a style that clearly lays the blueprint for his collaborations to Throbbing Gristle! Yet without any vocals or other noise, you can really hear the Carter component of the music in a wonderful way – different even than his later collaborations with Cosi Fanni Tutti, even when spare – as the whole vibe here is maybe a more condensed version of Krautrock electronics, taken into the space of songs that are just a few minutes long – but which also have a lot more darkness than other electronic work of the time. That sense of darkness is key – as these tracks are subtle, but very different than spacier or more calming music of the type – proof that Carter was really an emotional pioneer when it came to this side of the spectrum. Resonance, Late 30s/Early 40s. New Copy 10LP ... $149.99 199.99
A mindblowing look at the early years of Nat King Cole – a set that stretches in a mighty wide space before Nat's big fame at Capitol Records – and which also greatly expands our understanding of the material he recorded during his Decca years too! The music takes Nat back to a time long before most folks know his music – with roots in the bluesier side of the Chicago scene, moving through jazzier modes of the swing generation, to the tight trio work that helped Cole shape the sound of a generation – and all before he even got a chance to record more as a singer, and with bigger backings too! There's definitely some early Decca Records material from the 78rpm years, but there's also lots of alternate takes, small label material for Philo, Excelsior, and other labels – then a stunning amount of transcription recordings that were done for radio and broadcast – plus a few live tracks too. Not all the work here was recorded under Nat's name, either – as there's tracks in which Cole features strongly in other combos – although most tracks are trio numbers, and guitar great Oscar Moore is in the lineup right from the start. The 10LP set features over 180 tracks in all, remastered with really great sound – plus a 16 page booklet that's filled with notes, photos, and lots more musical history! LP, Vinyl record album

Far Out (UK), 2018. New Copy ... On August 29, 2020
Really mindblowing work from legendary drummer Ivan "Mamao" Conti – a key part of Azymuth through that group's many years – and still going strong here as a solo artist on his own! The album's almost a 21st Century realization of the sound that Azymuth was going for back in the day – cascading percussion with plenty of influences from Brazilian music and jazz, often given some electric elements along the way – but always in a style that's warmly organic, and right on the groove! Conti gets help from younger Azymuth and Incognito generations – as Alex Malherios plays bass on the record and Daniel Maunick handles keyboards, more percussion, and production – all at a level that never stomps on Ivan's vision at all – and which instead makes the whole thing as rewarding as any Azymuth session we've heard over the past few decades. Most tracks are instrumental, save for some airy wordless vocals – but Thiago Martins sings lead on "Que Legal", and other titles include "Aroeira", "Bacurau", "Poison Fruit", "Jemburi", "Ecos Da Mata", "Encontro", and "Tempestades". The somewhat slept on second album by Das Efx – and in hindsight, it's just as solid as Dead Serious – maybe even more consistently strong than the breakout debut! Dray and Skoob keep up the loco syllabic tempo and tongue tripping rhymes on this one – over the head nodding Solid Scheme beats that sound great to this day – but wisely put the focus on the rhyme craft rather than going overboard with the manic style. You've heard us an just about anyone else with an opinion about hip hop history go on and on about the golden years of the early 90s, and this rock solid effort deserves as much acclaim as many of the better remembered records of the day. One of the few truly great Martin Denny albums from the 60s, and one that features some killer use of the moog, and a very different sound than some of Denny's other albums. The keyboards have lots of wild sounds, with chirps and flutters that would make Perry & Kingsley proud – and the backing's a bit funkier than usual, with some nice electric basslines to keep the groove coming. An amazing little set that's as compelling as the title and cover might imply – and easily one of our favorite Martin Denny albums ever! There's a sound here that is, actually, quite "hypnotique" – as Denny's core combo is expanded by some larger arrangements, Japanese instrumentation, and even some cool vocals by the Jack Halloran singers – all of which serve to create these pulsating musical lines that shift and sway with an extremely dreamy quality, one that can easily hypnotize us with its musical magic! The added sound really adds a lot to Denny's core group – and the record has some great tracks like "Jungle Madness", "American In Bali", "Chinese Lullaby", "Hypnotique", "Scimitar", and "Voodoo Dreams". A massive little record, and a real turning point for alto genius Lou Donaldson – as he uses the set to move from the tight bop of earlier years into a whole new spectrum of funky grooves! Key to this project is drummer Idris Muhammad – who's on the kit, already kicking it up in the way that would make him a jazz funk legend as the 70s began – but so young here, he's working under his original name of Leo Morris! The rest of the group is equally great – with the up-and-coming Lonnie Smith on Hammond and Jimmy Ponder on guitar – plus tight trumpet from Blue Mitchell, who's really hitting his most soulful sound of the 60s. Titles include Donaldson's fantastic funky reworking of "Ode To Billie Joe" – a very famous sample cut over the years – plus the soulful groovers "The Humpback", "Peepin", "The Kid", and a nice take on "The Shadow Of Your Smile". Barbara "I Dream Of Jeannie" Eden gets herself out of the bottle and into the studio for a set of 60s pop tunes designed to bring out another side of her magic! Bill Justis handled the arrangements, in a style that has that RCA Nashville country pop sort of feel overall – electric bass plucking out the bottom, chorus vocals helping out the lead, and a sort of syncopated groove that gently steps along from back to front. We'll be honest, and say that Barbara's vocals aren't that much to write home about – but the album's a nice celebrity relic – and does feature a few sexy Jeannie shots on the front! The adult themes here are modes borrowed from older European styles – some of the slinky funk of Serge Gainsbourg and some of his contemporaries, mixed with maybe a touch of Euro erotic film scoring – but all given that strong undercurrent of funk that we can always expect from Leon Michels and the group – arranged and produced with a really superb quality throughout! The drums are nice and heavy, the basslines sexy and slinky, and there's some occasional wordless female vocals and larger arrangements that really expand the palette of El Michels. Titles include "Enfant", "Villa", "Kill The Lights", "Life Of Pablo", "A Swift Nap", "Munecas", "Rubix", "Hipps", and a number of "Adult Theme" tracks. LP, Vinyl record album

Donnie & Joe EmersonDreamin Wild (blue vinyl pressing – with download) ... LP
Light In The Attic, 1979. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $22.99 26.99
Fuzzy and genuinely well-crafted private press grooves from the Emerson brothers – with crazy good hooks, some surprisingly solid musicianship – and songs that range from straight-up catchy, though fuzz-drenched rock, to funk and soul! Donnie Emerson is the lead singer, guitarist and bass player, along with some synth – and on the best tunes, he's got a confident, laidback and warm style on vocals that truly doesn't feel the voice of a kid still in his teens – with brother Joe on drums and other friends on backing vocals here and there. Here's a record that profoundly transcends the private press novelty and the goofy jumpsuits they're rocking on the front cover! Includes "Good Time", "Give Me The Chance", "Baby", the instrumental groover "Feels Like The Sun", "Love Is", "Don't Go Lovin' Nobody Else", "Dream Full Of Dreams" and "My Heart". Franco FalsiniCold Nose (white vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polydor (Italy), 1975. New Copy ... $23.99
Fantastic spacey sounds from Franco Falsini – a record that was originally created as the soundtrack for the film Cold Nose (Naso Freddo) – but which also really works as a link between the early 70s Italian prog scenes, and some of the more longform electric modes of the German scene! The set features three long tracks, all instrumental – building beautifully from guitar lines, keyboards, and other electric elements – pulsating at a midtempo pace, and with maybe a bit more heft than a Tangerine Dream record, thanks to occasional solo breakouts that never seem to disturb the energy of the core pulsations too much! A gem of a set – electric and spacey, but never laidback or lazy. LP, Vinyl record album

INA (France), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $22.99
Unreleased material from the legendary Serge Gainsbourg – recorded for French radio in the 60s, and with a different style than some of his more familiar studio work! Gone are the large, full arrangements – and in their place is an intimate approach that has Serge on piano alongside his vocals – delivering his original tunes in a way that's very personal, and maybe even edgier than usual, and completely charming overall! A few cuts add in bass and guitar – and the set features versions of "Les Goemons", "La Javanaise", "Le Rock De Nerval", "Le Talkie Walkie", "Intoxicated Man", "Ces Petits Riens", and "Elaeudanla Teiteia". ✨✧ Jef Gilson with Nathan Davis & Woody ShawJef Gilson A Gaveau (180 gram pressing) ... LP
SFP/SAM (France), 1965. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99
A brilliant record from French modernist Jef Gilson – and a set that's filled with amazing performances from a host of key French and American players too! At the core is Gilson – writing, directing, and playing piano in the ensemble – which also features trumpets from Woody Shaw, Roger Guerin, Sonny Grey, and Yvan Jullien – and saxophones from Michel Portal, Jean Louis Chautemps, and the mighty Nathan Davis – whose soulful sound is a really key part of the album's success! The group also features vibes from Bernard Lubat – ringing out strongly from beneath the horns – and the rest of the combo features Francois Guin and Raymond Fonseque on trombones, Alby Cullaz on bass, and Jacques Thollot on drums – all coming together in a style that's aware of modern ideas, but also swings strongly too – kind of like the most inventive late 60s moments from the Clark Boland Big Band, or the Gustav Brom ensemble. Titles include "Jazz A La Quartre", "Modalite Pour Mimi", "Jazz Gynopedie", "Happy Filou", and "Made For Mad". LP, Vinyl record album

Gogo PenguinGogo Penguin (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $24.99 29.99
The album's got an understated cover, but the set more than lives up to the sort of crackling sounds we've been loving from Gogo Penguin in recent years – that UK trio with a way of really remaking the interplay between piano, bass, and drums! If anything, the bass and drums seem a lot more upfront in the mix than on old school piano records – sometimes driving the sound of the group with a very chunky rhythm, sometimes still crafting this more subtle soundshaping – but at a level that really sets the piano free on these long, lyrical runs! Yet the piano can also be pretty darn rhythmic, but in ways that are maybe more cyclical, especially when compared to the drums – all of which makes for a very unique sound on titles that include "Signal In The Noise", "Atomised", "Embers", "Totem", "Kora", "Don't Go", and "F Maj Pixie". ✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithOur Man Flint ... LP
20th Century, Mid 60s. Sealed ... $11.99
Excellent soundtrack work by Jerry Goldsmith – possibly his greatest ever! Jerry's usually a bit staid with some of his scores – but working here on the soundtrack to this James Coburn spy spoof film, he's truly fantastic! The approach mixes strings and bossa-inflected grooves with some spookier instrumental touches – either on electric guitar, sax, or a "tortured" Thomas organ and a Solovox – and the overall feel of the album is on a par with the best work of the sort by Lalo Schifrin or Hugo Montenegro! Titles include "Doing As The Romans Did", "All I Have To Do Is Take A Bite of Your Apple?", "Tell Me More About That Volcano", and "Our Man Flint". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Jerry GoldsmithSand Pebbles ... LP
20th Century, 1966. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $5.99
A really striking score from Jerry Goldsmith – penned with just the right sense of drama and tension for this mid 60s military thriller! Goldsmith's already working here with a full palette of colors – and Lionel Newman conducts the music with an added richness that seems to bring out all of his long experience on big budget epics, yet deliver the end results with the more subtle, compressed modes that make Goldsmith one of the more mature composers of the 60s. Horns shimmer with this great sense of restraint – almost painting colors in sound – and given the setting of the film, there's some slight exotic hints in a few instrumental passages as well. The soundtrack to the 60s version of Stagecoach – the one with the outrageously beautiful Ann Margaret, Bing Crosby, Red Buttons, Slim Pickens and Alex Cord – with a lavish, though appropriately dust-strewn Jerry Goldsmith soundtrack! Al GreyAl Grey/Billy Mitchell Sextet ... LP
Argo, 1961. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Fantastic work from trombonist Al Grey – a player who was really sounding at his best when working in this small combo mode with the fantastic tenoris Billy Mitchell! The album was presented by Metronome, and features a live performance at the Museum of Modern Art – one that has Grey and Mitchell adding in Ray Barretto for a slightly more percussive sound than usual. Tracks are lean, rootsy, and with a tight soul jazz approach that really lets Mitchell hit some of those great notes that make his tenor sound one of the great lost treasures of the 60s. Titles include "Wild Deuce", "Bantu", "Melba's Blues", "Home Fries", and "Bluish Grey". LP, Vinyl record album

Harlem Gospel TravelersHe's On Time (clear vinyl pressing – with bonus download) ... LP
Colemine, 2019. New Copy ... $18.99
The fantastic full-length group of The Harlem Gospel Travelers – a quartet trained on the male group gospel modes of older acts like the Soul Stirrers or Violinaires – but one who really shine strongly with a voice of their own, thanks to a set of all original material, and some nice funk-based currents in the instrumentation! The album's definitely a gospel record, but it resonates with those rare efforts on labels like Stax or Jewel, which could bring in musical currents from the secular world, to really help shape the spiritual message – opening things up way past the doors of the church, so that the positive spirit and sense of rebirth can spread out and touch the rest of the world. These guys are still very young, and we expect that we'll be hearing great things from them in years to come – but we're already plenty pleased with the results here, on tunes that include "Am I Doing Enough", "Oh Yes He Will", "Motherless Child", "Shine On Me", "Brighter Day", "Wash Me Lord", "On The Right Road", and "If You Can't Make It Through A Storm". Resonance, 1966. New Copy 3LP Gatefold (reissue)... $69.99
The birth of a legend – documented here in a really wonderful package – a brilliant 2CD set that brings forth the first-ever recordings of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra – heard here on the debut nights of their very long run of Monday night performances at the Village Vanguard! Right from the start, this group was really something special – formed by the meeting of two legendary talents, trumpeter Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis – and driven strongly by a lineup of all-star players who were happy to shelve their egos this night of the week, and come together in a unit that was far more than just the sum of its amazing parts. Players on these two nights include Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass, Jimmy Owens and Bill Berry on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer and Garnett Brown on trombones, and Jerome Richardson, Joe Farrell, Pepper Adams, and Jerry Dodgion on a flurry of amazing reed performances – producing the kinds of insane colors and edges the group was always known for! This isn't big band jazz – at least not the sort you'd think of with cliche – and instead, the recordings document the meeting of amazing talents creating effortlessly together under the leadership of two generous giants. The package is wonderful, really a tribute to this amazing music – oversized, and with a huge booklet of notes and photos – and 2CDs with titles that include "Back Bone", "Big Dipper", "Mornin Reverend", "Little Pixie", "All My Yesterdays", "Once Around", "Ah That's Freedom", and "Don't Ever Leave Me". The biggest creative stride yet for guitar experimentalist Sarah Louise! Sarah continues to use folk traditions – from acoustic guitar, to Appalachian songcraft, to field recordings of nature and more – as a springboard for inventive composition, but this might be the most distinctive and most abstractly inspired work we've heard from her to date. Rooted in 6 string guitar in standard tuning, but fleshed out tremendously with field recordings, bits of synth and really beautiful (and mostly wordless) vocals. Schema (Italy), 2009. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $16.99
A real rising star on Schema Records – composer Alessandro Magnanini, best known for his hit with Mario Biondi – stepping out here in a beautiful album of his own original music! There's a fresh feel here that really opens up a new chapter at Schema – still a bit of their old jazz/bossa vibe, but with a more expansive quality too – one that embraces bits of Bacharach, snaps of 60s soundtracks, and gentler jazzier passages too – all put together by a group that features key talents from the contemporary Italian scene – like vocalists Rosalia De Souza and Stefania Rava, trumpeter Fabrizio Bosso, and other instrumentalists on vibes, piano, tenor, and trombone. Most instrumentation is live – scored nicely, but not enough so that it loses the spontaneity of jazz – and other vocals are by Jenny B and Liam McKahey. The work is really beautiful – still mostly upbeat, but hardly just the stuff of dancefloor grooving too – key proof that Maganini's a big talent to watch in years to come. Titles include "Livin My Life", "Open Up Your Eyes", "Stay Into My Life", "But Not For You", "Greetings From Here", "Something Fine", "Suddenly", "Blind Date Blues", and "So Long Goodbye". The album's got a very poetic title, and a wonderfully poetic sound as well – music that adds up to way more than the 1000 seconds promised on the front, served up in beautiful duets between Jan Maksimowicz on soprano sax and Dimitrij Golovanov on piano! Some tunes are quite short, others run for a few minutes – and there's a great sense of variety throughout – sometimes quite free, sometimes more lyrical – often with a nice sense of space around the edges, and a balance of modernism and sentiment, a bit like ECM at its best. The title track's a mighty big hit for The Marketts – and it's also a great way to describe the group's talent for pushing past their boundaries at the time! The sound is surf instrumental at the core – but really stretches out to space themes, soundtrack areas, and more – thanks to inventive arrangements from Ray Pohlman, who pushes these guys farther than the usual groups of the time – while still keeping that guitar instrumental style that made them so great overall! There's a lot more variety to the tunes than you'd hear on a Ventures album, for example – and beautiful Bones Howe engineering makes sure that the sound is top-shelf throughout!
