✨✧ Jay McShannBig Apple Bash ... CD
Atlantic/Wounded Bird, 1979. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A much groovier record than you might expect – hardly the older-styled jazz session normally associated with Jay McShann, and more of a wide-ranging session that brings in some great contemporary touches! The album's something of a celebration for Jay – and it features wonderful guest work from players who include Gerry Mulligan on baritone and soprano sax, Herbie Mann on flute and tenor sax, John Scofield on guitar, Doc Cheatham on trumpet, and Eddie Gomez on bass. A few tunes have an older Kansas City sort of swing, but others have a vamping groove that's really great – and these numbers really stand out in the set with some great solo moments. Titles include "Crazy Legs & Friday Strut", "Blue Feeling", "Jumpin The Blues", "Dickie's Dream", and "I'd Rather Drink Muddy Water". CD

Shannon HarrisAudio Urbanology – The Art Of Audio Truism ... CD
Urbanicity, 2010. Used ... $4.99
The first full length set we've heard from Shannon Harris & his Urbanicity fellow travelers – and it's a great one – blending classic spiritual jazz, Afro roots & Brazilian influences, and spacey soul for a unique, hypnotic groove! Harris blends live instrumentation with cosmic mood and production touches wonderfully – crafted with soulful vocals, bass, guitar and other strings, sax, flute, vibes and a host of earthy percussion touches – with a bit of a smoothed out groove that glides along and pulls you right in! Unpredictable from one cut to the next, except for it all being uniformly excellent! Guests include Brian Wesley Smith, Christopher McBride, Jube, Natalie Oliveri & Chicago Butucada, Alia Ammar, Cinery Achebe, Nosarnus and others. Shannon is the writer, composer, producer, percussionist and the maestro at the center of it a sprawling, yet insistent vibe. Titles include "Atem Ra", "Desperado/El Montuno (The 2nd Rising)", "Viva A Vida Como De Nao Hauvesse Amanha", "Leroy B-Boy", "Kinetic Energy", "Afrika", "Spirits Of The Black Experience", "States Of Receptivity". MC LyteEyes On This ... CD
First Priority/Traffic, 1989. New Copy ... $6.99 14.98
MC Lyte's second full length record – a bit overlooked in the grand scheme, if only because the preceding Lyte As A Rock was a tough act to follow – so now's a great time to catch up with it! To our ears, Eyes On This is every bit as nice as the debut, and it that last of Lyte's no nonsense late 80s east coast rap efforts – before she started inching more towards a commercial style in the early 90s. An underappreciated classic! Includes "Cappucino", "Stop, Look, Listen" featuring Audio Two, "Survival of the Fittest (rmx)", "I Am the Lyte", "Cha Cha Cha", "Not Wit' A Dealer" and another song dedicated to Shante, "Shut The Eff Up! (Hoe)". Also includes "Throwin Words At U", "Please Understand", "Rhyme Hangover", "Funky Song" and "Slave 2 The Rhythm". CD

Lulu GainsbourgFrom Gainsbourg To Lulu ... LP
Universal (France), 2011. Near Mint- 2LP ... $11.99
A new generation of the Gainsbourg family line comes into the musical fold – with results that are surprisingly nice! Lulu's an offspring of Serge, of a generation past Charlotte Gainsbourg – but he's still equally well-suited to pay tribute to his pop – as you'll hear in this reworking of famous tunes from the songbook of the great one! Lulu Gainsbourg enlists a host of famous guests on the outing – including Rufus Wainwright, Marianne Faithfull, Shane McGowan, Iggy Pop, Ayo, and others – and highlights include Scarlett Johansson joining Lulu on a remake of "Bonnie & Clyde", and Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis singing together on "Ballade De Melody Nelson"! Other tracks include "Initials BB" with Iggy Pop, "Sous Le Soleil Exactement" with Shane McGowan, "Manon" with Marianne Faithful, "La Javanaise" with Richard Bona, and "Couleur Cafe" with Aya. Instrumental tunes include "Intoxicated Man" and "Black Trombone". LP, Vinyl record album

GroundhogsScratching The Surface (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Liberty/Pure Pleasure (UK), 1968. New Copy (reissue)... $14.99 44.99
Classic work from The Groundhogs – one of the heaviest-hitting of the UK blues rock groups, and still one of the best! The sound is lean and raw here – with guitar and vocals from TS McPhee and harmonica from Steve Rye – next to bass from Pete Cruikshank and Ken Pustelnik – all recorded in a spare setting by Mike Batt, who really keeps things nice and raw! There's less of the psych or hard rock elements that some of the group's contemporaries would soon pick up – and in a way, these guys might be the closest the UK ever came to the Canned Heat sound. Title sinclude "Man Trouble", "Married Man", "Come Back Baby", "Still A Fool", "Early In The Morning", "Nor More Doggin", and "Waking Blues". LP, Vinyl record album

Hajime YoshizawaJapan ... CD
Village Again (Japan), 2008. Used ... $9.99
One of the greatest efforts so far from Hajime Yoshizawa – a set that has some heavy jazz influences, and almost hearkens back to his roots – yet one that's also awash in some of his best 21st Century soul styles as well! The album has a snapping acoustic energy that's right up there with other Japanese club jazz work in recent years – and features lots of tight piano work from Yoshizawa, played with a sense of imagination and energy that we haven't heard from him in years – a depth that's almost like McCoy Tyner at his best – supported by rhythms that take us back to some of Curtis Lundy's best work of years past. Navasha Daya turns in a few great vocal performances here – really sparkling away from Fertile Ground, and sounding more like a jazz singer than ever before – and other tracks feature guest work by Akiko and Shanti. Brilliant stuff all around – and with 13 tracks that include "Bristlecone Pine", "Time", "Aska", "Eastern Step", "Celebration", "Satellite Dancer", "Rain", "May", "Seeds Of Spring", and "The Color Of Peace". VariousHandy Man – The Otis Blackwell Songbook ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
A vital collection of some of the best songs written, or co-written by Otis Blackwell – who's one of the greatest and most adaptable songwriters of the late 50s onward! His songs were perfectly suited to bridge late 50s and early 60s soul, rock and pop – especially for performers who straddled those styles – but his work reaches pretty far, stylistically! If you don't know the name Otis Blackwell, we promise you know his songs – and some of the best of them are on this set – with some hugely famous tunes, some in iconic form, and others in lesser-known versions. There's also some overlooked gems – and the titles include "Make Me Know It" by Elvis, "Don't Be Cruel" by Jerry Lee Lewis, "My Pigeon's Gone" by The Five Keys, "For My Good Fortune" by Mahalia Jackson, "I'll Find You" by Gene Pitney, "Brace Yourself" by Ben E King, "I Told Myself A Lie" by Clyde McPhatter, "Home In Your Heart" by Solomon Burke, "Handy Man" by Del Shannon, Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott's 1962 demo for "One Broken Heart For Sale", "Fever" by Little Willie John and more. ✨✧ VariousPhil's Spectre – A Wall Of Soundalikes ... CD
Ace (UK), 1960s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
That's not a typo in the title – the compilation's a collection of tracks that all bear the mark of Phil Spector – Spector's Spectres, if you will! It's a well known fact that Phil had a monumental impact on 60s rock, pop, and soul music – as his "wall of sound" production style forever transformed the sound of the single back in the sixties. And although there's been lots of compilations that focus on Phil's own work, this is the first one we've seen to showcase his proteges and contemporaries – a surprisingly wide range of studio talents who all picked up on Phil's tricks and twists! The tunes on the set include some great 60s soul and pop numbers, and a bunch of the tracks are reissued legally here for the first time. Plus, the set's got some wonderful liner notes – really taking you through the tracks, and explaining the connection to Spector and the overall sound of the music. Features production work by Nick DeCaro, Van McCoy, Jan Davis, Abner Spector, Brian Holland & Lamont Dozier, Brian Wilson, Sonny Bono, and Jack Nitszche – and titles that include "When You Walk In The Room" by Jackie DeShannon, "When The Boy's Happy" by The Four Pennies, "Hang On" by The Wall Of Sound, "Tremblin" by Gene Pitney, "A Little Love" by Alder Ray, "On The Spanish Side" by The Corsairs & Landy McNeil, "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" by The Beach Boys, "Just You" by Sonny & Cher, "I Can't Make It Alone" by PJ Proby, "And That Reminds Me" by The Dolls, "You're So Fine" by Dorothy Berry, "Missing My Baby" by Clydie King, and "I Just Couldn't Say" by Lorraine & The Delights. ✨✧ Gladys Knight & The PipsThat Special Time Of Year ... LP
Columbia, 1982. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Although recorded a bit later than some of Gladys Knight's better-known Holiday work, this album's actually our favorite of the bunch – because it's got a looser, more soul-based feel that gets beyond some of the overdone modes of earlier Christmas work! Gladys is clearly trying to get more Christmas play on the radio with this one – and avoids the serious modes of earlier Holiday records by going for straightforward tunes that have a nicely modern soul approach to the arrangements. Backings are done by Gene Page, McKinley Jackson, and Larry Farrow – and a few tunes feature duets with Shanga or Johnny Mathis. Titles include "This Christmas", "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town", "Jingle Bells", "That Special Time Of Year", "When A Child Is Born", "I Believe", and "It's The Happiest Time Of Year". ✨✧ Burt BacharachTogether? ... LP
RCA, 1979. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A lost Burt Bacharach treasure – a bit later than classic vintage, but a wonderful album from the mature maestro – and sometimes overlooked, due to its status as a soundtrack! The work here is totally great – that mellow, easy-flowing style that Burt really perfected around the time of Living Together – served up here in a batch of sweet instrumental tracks, plus a few key vocal numbers with lyrics sung by Jackie DeShannon, Libby Titus, and Michael McDonald – all of whom slide down more into the Bacharach ethos than stand out as their usual selves – and we mean that in a good way! Titles include "I Don't Need You Any More", "In Tune", "If We Ever Get Out Of Here", "On The Beach", "I've Got My Mind Made Up", "Find Love", "Luisa", and "I Think I'm Gonna Fall In Love".
