Dollar Brand/Don Cherry/Carlos WardThird World – Underground ... CD
Trio/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
A stunning little session – and every bit as wonderful as you'd expect from a lineup that includes Dollar Brand, Don Cherry, and Carlos Ward! The three players work together here in open, spiritual styles – with really long-flowing lines from Brand on piano, in a more modal style that's different from some of his other records – balanced out with bold trumpet lines from Cherry, and soaring alto sax from Ward – a player who doesn't always get the chance to step out this much! All three players vocalize a bit, but more in some sort of rootsy way that echoes the music – and the album's a really unique outing from all three players – and a set we'd rank with their best from the time. Titles include "Don's Song", "Cherry", "Bra Joe From Kilimanjaro", "Swazi", and "Jabulani Easter Joy". CD

What can we say? "Ring My Bell" was one of the biggest crossover disco tracks of the late 70s – with a cool electronic groove on the beat, and lyrics and production by Frederick Knight, making the southern soul singer one of the more unlikely disco forces of the time. This 12" single features the full 8 minute version – with the "Midnight Mix" by Richie Rivera. 12-inch, Vinyl record

Billy Ward & The DominoesBilly Ward & His Dominoes ... LP
King, Early 50s. New Copy (reissue)... $6.99 9.98
Mighty work from The Dominoes – a group who got their start here on some key sides for King Records, which then had a huge impact on the sound of vocal groups for years to come! The lineup here includes early performances by both Jackie Wilson and Clyde McPhatter – two later superstars in the world of soul, whose voices here help the group crackle with an edge that's quite different than the more polished style of a few years before! And yet, The Dominoes can also be classy when they want – as heavenly as on ballads as when McPhatter was in The Drifters, at a level that actually makes this work a perfect percursor for The Drifters' 50s material on Atlantic. Titles include "Learnin The Blues", "Three Coins In The Fountain", "Lonesome Road", "Until The Real Thing Comes Along", "May I Never Love Again", "Little Things Mean A Lot", and "Harbor Lights". Bible & Tire, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 13.98
The first recording in over 50 years from Elder Jack Ward – a Memphis gospel legend whose roots go way back to the early years of the city's soul scene! Ward was a member of both the Christian Harmonizers and Sunset Travelers, then went on to a huge legacy of his own – including work on the D-Vine label, with his own group, the Gospel Four. Yet for some reason, he never made it back in the studio over the past five decades – a fact that's nicely corrected here by the strong efforts of the Bible & Tire offshoot of Fat Possum Records – served up in a mode that's slightly more contemporary, but still faithful to Jack's roots – with backing from the Sacred Soul Sound Section. Titles include the catchy "The Way Is Already Made", plus "Lord I'm In Your Care", "Shout Trouble Is Over", "He's Got Great Things", "I Feel Better Since I Prayed", and "Someone Who Is Greater Than I". A great little album cut by Nina Simone during the time she was working with Weldon Irvine – a live album that really has the lady stretching out, and showing off all the cool, complicated grooves she brought to a concert setting! Weldon did the arrangements, and they've got a very righteous feel overall – which really seems to inspire Simone in her interpretations of the tunes, as she improvises a lot and really takes off with the lyrics! The album includes a really haunting version of "My Sweet Lord", the classic "Poppies", and a great poem/song called "Today Is A Killer" that goes on for over 15 minutes! LP, Vinyl record album

And that versatility really shows up here – as you'll hear Duck in a series of duets with Michael Moore on alto, Mark Dresser on bass, Derek Bailey on guitar, Steve Beresford on piano, John Butcher on tenor, and Roswell Rudd on trombone – plus a trio with Alex Ward on clarinet and Joe Williamson on bass – and a quartet with Ward on clarinet, John Edwards on bass, and Steve Noble on drums. Dollar BrandAfrican Space Program ... CD
Enja/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1973. New Copy ... $16.99
One of the most righteous 70s sessions to come from the hands of Dollar Brand – a New York recording that's filled with work by a host of players from the spiritual jazz underground – all of whom soar strongly on the album's long tracks, and give the set a fire and righteous energy you're not likely to hear on other Brand albums of the time! The leader is especially bold and free on piano – and provides these long lines that set fire to work from Cecil Bridgewater and Charles Sullivan on trumpets, Kiani Zawadi on trombone, Cecil McBee on bass, Roy Brooks on drums, and the massive talents Sonny Fortune, Carlos Ward, Hamiet Bluiette, Roland Alexander, and John Stubblefield on reeds! The record has a much fuller feel than most of Brand's other work from the time, and it's great to hear his angular, rhythmic piano juxtaposed with the warm spiritualism of the players in the group – wonderful energy that takes flight on the two-part "Titiana", and the longer "Jabulani Easter Joy". Tracks are medium length – but filled with the slow-building grace that always makes Brand's work differ majestically from most of his contemporaries. Titles include "Karmat", "Guilty", "Zimbabwe", "For Coltrane, No 11", and "Bombella". CD

Aleke KanonuAleke (with bonus tracks) ... CD
PMG (Austria), 1980. Used ... $11.99
A really unique project from the end of the 70s – a set that takes some of the Afro Funk energy that was bubbling in West Africa during the decade, then mixes it with some funky jazz touches arranged by the great William S Fischer! The mix of cultures comes out perfectly – with no forced for fake modes at all – as Aleke Kanonu plays lots of percussion and sings in a variety of languages – alongside a group that features Bad Bascomb on bass, Milt Ward on trumpet, George Davis on guitar, Earl McIntyre on trombone, and Fischer on tenor, organ, and a host of keyboards! Bascomb's basslines are great – and really hold the whole record together at the bottom – with a bad-stepping jazz funk core that allows Aleke plenty of freedom in his performance, on long tracks that stretch out with a hell of a lot of creativity and warmly collaborative energy. Tracks include "N'Gwode", "Keep New York Clean", "Mother's Day", and "Home Sweet Home". CD features bonus tracks "Happiness" and "Nwanne Nwanne Nwanne". CD

A double-length set that showcases the ever-growing, ever-evolving talents of drummer Quin Kirchner – working here in a variety of settings with help from some other great talents on the Chicago scene! Most of these tunes have a core sense of structure – and even when Quin is improvising more freely, he still finds a way to swing – working here on conventional drums, other percussion instruments, and even a bit of kalimba too – alongside a mix of players that includes Nick Broste on trombone, Nate Lepine on tenor and flute, Nick Mazzarella on alto, Jason Stein on bass clarinet, Greg Ward on alto, Rob Clearfield on piano, and Matt Ulery on bass. Many numbers have a spacious, ambitious vibe – almost spiritual jazz, of a quality that really has us respecting Kirchner more than ever – and the double space of the album is really needed to allow this majestic message the room to unfold properly. Paul MotianTribute ... CD
ECM (Germany), 1975. New Copy ... $10.99 11.99
A great statement as a leader from drummer Paul Motian – a player that none would have expected to be hitting this territory in the decade before – the start of a great run of records that continued his break from more familiar rhythmic territory! The record's got a very strong ECM vibe, but also maybe a bit more bite, too – as the bass work of Charlie Haden is balanced by sharper sounds from Carlos Ward on alto sax – who really gets plenty of space to dominate the proceedings, with this open soulfulness that really adds a lot to the record. The set's also got twin guitars from Paul Metzke and Sam Brown, which makes for a great approach – especially as Brown moves between acoustic and electric. Titles include a beautiful reading of Haden's "Song For Che" – plus "Victoria", "Tuesday Ends Saturday", "War Orphans", and "Sod House". CD

Blue Note/Soul Brother (UK), 1975. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
A monstrous bit of jazz funk from drummer Alphonse Mouzon – spacey tracks in a choppy style that reminds us a bit of some of the best European fusion albums from the period, but with a harder groove overall! Mini Moog and ARP trip out the sound throughout, but the underlying rhythms are nice and heavy. Lee Ritenour's on guitar, and he gets a lot of play on the record – but the main groove is Alphonse's heavy funky snakefoot! Al's drums and percussion are furiously frenetic, and he also plays a lot of keyboards – and other players include Tom Scott on tenor, Dave Grusin on clavinet, Victor Feldman on bongos and congas, and Charles Meeks on bass. A few tracks have vocals – by Marty McCall, Jackie Ward, and Caroline Willis – as well as Alphonse himself and the album's also got two very nice break-oriented tracks – "Snake Walk" and "New York City" – both with nice hard drums! Titles include a number of other good fusion groovers, like "Without A Reason", "Just Like the Sun", "Before You Leave", "Just Like The Sun", and "Mouzon Moves On". CD

NomoNew Tones ... CD
Ubiquity, 2006. Used ... $3.99
Mindblowing work from one of the greatest new groups we've heard in years – Michigan's mighty Nomo, easily one of the greatest Afro Funk combos going! Nomo's got a tightness that surpasses most other heirs to Fela's throne – an intensely focused energy that's really tremendous – and which soars out with some jazzy touches on the horns that move the group into deeply soulful territory! There's way more going on here than just guitar riffing, percussion, and blasting horns – as Nomo's musical vision is really expansive, and often echoes with cosmic touches you never would have heard back in 70s Ethiopia! Electric instruments are used subtly, but really effectively – so that keyboards are matched with weird guitar parts and some especially great electrified gamelan and kalimba lines, the last of which are almost worth the price of the record alone. The whole thing's great – classic in its roots, but creative enough to have a boldly strong voice of its own – and our hats are off to Nomo for blowing us away even more here than with their already-great debut! Titles include "We Do We Go", "Nutones", "Hand & Mouth", "Fourth Ward", "Reasons", "New Song", "Divisions", "Sarvodaya", and "Book Of Right On". CD

One of Don Pullen's most spiritual albums of the later years – a live set that has him working with a group that really lives up to the culture-crossing reference of their name – as slight elements of African and Brazilian rhythms dance along with the soulful jazz vibe of the performance! Pullen's got this great way of laying out long flowing piano lines at times – almost in the spirit of Dollar Brand – and he's also working with Carlos Ward on alto sax, who'd played with Brand before – and who gives the record this beautifully balanced sense of soul. Some of the more rootsy elements come from percussionist Mor Thiam – who plays djembe, tabula, and rainsticks – and the quintet also features Nilson Matta on bass and JT Lewis on drums. All tracks are quite long, and titles include "Kele Mou Bana", "Yebino Spring", "Ah George We Hardly Knew Ya", "Capoeira", and "Aseeko". CD

Compelling work from Mike Reed's Loose Assembly – a group headed by one of the hippest cats working in Chicago these days, with some superb guest work from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell! Reed's musical vision here is sharper than ever – and there's a sense of power to the record that grabs us right from the start (or maybe a bit after the start, since the start's a bit quiet!) – a definite loose assembly of players, but ones who really know how to find the best strengths in each other – a lineup that includes Reed on drums and percussion, Greg Ward on alto, Tomeka Reid on cello, Jason Adasiewicz on vibes, Josh Abrams on bass, and Roscoe Mitchell on alto, soprano, and flute. Tracks are both quite long – the "Empathetic Parts" title track running for 33 minutes – and the shorter "I'll Be Right Here Waiting" clocking in a bit past 8 minutes, with a gentle, soulful quality that's like the AACM at their early 70s best. VariousBubblerock Is Here To Stay – The British Pop Explosion 1970 to 1973 (3CD set) ... CD
Grapefruit (UK), Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $24.99 30.99
A fantastic collection of work from the UK scene at the start of the 70s – a treasure trove of pop cuts from the time, most of which never made it across the Atlantic to our neck of the woods – and which represent a whole different world of music than you'd know from the classic rock and prog albums that usually represent the period! Instead, these are cuts that were cooked up in the studio in search of a hit – some by names that worked strongly in the 60s, others by new groups – some of whom only existed as a name on a label – but all in search of fresh sounds, groovy lyrics, and a way of putting over a tune that spoke volumes about the studio changes and advances taking place around the UK scene at the time! A number of cuts here have production that might be vaguely in glam territory, while others change up the way that vocals and guitars work together, and others evolve past Brit pop modes of the 60s – embracing psych or hard rock elements, but in a subtle way. As with other Cherry Red/Grapefruit collections of this nature, the whole thing is a stunning journey through music that we'd never have heard otherwise, and never in this much detail – presented with a big booklet of notes on all the crazy cats within – to support 85 tracks by artists who include Paintbox, Simon Turner, Mr Bloe, The Weathermen, Fumble, Posse, Gingerbread, Majority One, Jonathan King, Marmalade, Clifford T Ward, Stud Leather, Paul Gabriel, Autumn, St Cecelia, Rick Price, The Piglets, Kincade, Sweet, The Sad, Gumm, The Angelette, Grumble, Jungle Jim, Shag, Bubblerock, Harmony Grass, Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs, Stardust, Bill Fay, Pete Dello, Buggy, David Essex, Peter Kellern, Fickle Pickle, Touchwood, and many others! Fremeaux & Associates (France), 1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3CD ... $22.99 29.99
The image of a female singer at a piano is nothing new, but it definitely has a very special place in the history of jazz – maybe one of the few spots where a female instrumentalist could really get some time in the spotlight, while also breaking past some of the more standard cliches of teary-eyed torch singers too! This set is an excellent overview of the tradition – and features material from the early years of jazz, when there was maybe a stronger through-line to blues as well – then follows artists up through a huge boom in the postwar years – as piano lines got more modern, and vocal approaches did too! The set does a great job of mixing up traditions – still following some of the more blues-based artists through the 50s as well – and as with every great set on the Fremeaux label, the set features detailed notes in English and French on all the contents. 76 tracks in all – with selections by Cleo Brown, Una Mae Carlisle, Katie Webster, Lilette Thomas, Shirley Horn, Madonna Martin, Christine Chatman, Jeri Southern, Blossom Dearie, Hadda Brooks, Frantic Fay Thomas, Louise Johnson, Martha Davis, Nellie Lutcher, Clara Ward, Ira Mae Littlejohn, Paula Watson, Arizone Dranes, Camille Howard, and a number of others. King/Gusto, Late 40s/Early 50s. New Copy ... $3.99 9.98
Raw, raunchy sounds – all pulled together from a time before soul and rock even existed! Most of the work here is from the classic catalog of King Records – a killer imprint in the postwar R&B market, and a company who wasn't afraid to do what it took to make a knockout record! In the case of these tracks, the singers often hit some fairly suggestive material – often hidden in early 50s innuendo, but barely so – with a vibe that's often nastier than even the most hardcore rockabilly sounds to come! The music here has its roots in blues, but is inflected with plenty of jazz, and the presence of the singers often point the way towards soul music – especially the James Brown crowd that would later rise at the same label. Titles on this volume include "Sexy Ways" by Hank Ballard & The Midnighters, "Lolly Pop Mama" by Wynonie Harris, "I Want A Bowlegged Woman" by Bull Moose Jackson, "You Can't Keep A Good Man Down" by Billy Ward & The Dominoes, "Will You Be Mine" by The Swallows, "Leave My Kitten Alone" by Little Willie John, "Sixy Minute Man" by Billy Ward & The Dominoes, and "Lovin Machine" by Wynonie Harris. Grapefruit (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 3CD ... $29.99 38.99
Key work from an amazing time in British music – a time when the softer sounds of folk music and harder sounds of rock groups stepped aside to allow a unique hybrid to emerge – the sophisticated singer/songwriter, who had an ability to borrow the best from both genres, yet come up with a spirit that was all his own! You'll recognize some of the names here from their work in other fields – but together, the artists represent a very rich document of this unique moment in music – work that's free from commercial pursuits, and which still feels very fresh and new all these many decades later – thanks to a strong ear for songcraft, and a musical vision that's especially surprising from some of the artists who later went on to crossover fame in the mid 70s. The package features 66 tracks in all, with very detailed notes on the well-chosen array of tracks – titles by artists who include Dave Cousins, Gary Farr, Peter Sarstedt, Wizz Jones, Beau, Meic Stevens, Ian A Anderson, Mike Cooper, Mick Audsley, Clifford T Ward, Richard Thompson, Kevin Ayers, David McWilliams, Al Stewart, Marc Brierley, Al Jones, Keith Riley, Bill Fay, Tony Hazzard, Dave Morgan, Phil Cordell, Ray Dorset, Graham Gouldman, Mike Heron, and many others! Savoy/Honest Jons (UK), Late 50s/1960s/1970s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $23.99
An insanely fantastic look at the strong legacy of gospel music from Savoy Records – a company who were initially a powerhouse in the fields of jazz and R&B, but who moved into the gospel world and dominated that market for decades! Savoy is a bit like Chess Records – a company who really learned how to record blues singers and soulful styles from the secular world, then used that same ability to work some real magic on songs from the more spiritual side of the spectrum – an approach that really made for top-shelf music, even as the decades moved on! Savoy's gospel legacy has always been a bit underground – not nearly as reissued for larger audiences as their jazz and blues material – but this collection does a great job of correcting that lack, by presenting their music in a wonderful format – all in a mix of rare cuts and classics from the gospel underground. A great 3CD set – with a huge amount of work – music by The Davis Sisters, Gospel Chimes, Jimmy Scott, Roberta Martin Singers, Swindell Brothers, Christones, Gospel Harmonettes Specials, Harmonizing Five, Famous Ward Singers, Blind Boys Of Alabama, Stars Of Faith, Gospel Cavaliers, Staple Singers, The Metro Tones, Betty Hollins, Gene Martin, Swan Silvertones, Artistic Sounds, James Moore, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Brooklyn Skyways, World Wonders, Myrna Summers, Brockingham Ensemble, Prof Charles Taylor, Exciting Supreme Highlights, Highway QCs, Solomon Burke, Genobia Jeter, World Wonders, Edith Moreno, Glenn Jones & The Modulations, Hollywood Stars, James Cleveland, Holy Lights Of Baltimore, Sensational Williams Brothers, Gospelaires Of Dayton, Helen Hollins Singers, Edith Moreno, and The 4th Of May. VariousTea & Sympathy – The English Baroque Sound 1968 to 1974 ... CD
Ace (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A great document of a really cool moment in British pop – a time when the music eschwed guitars in favor of strings and larger arrangements – not in the sweet style that American singers were using at the start of the 60s, but a much darker mode that paved the way for even more complex music to come in the 70s! The arrangements here are complex, yet still very tuneful and groovy – and maybe some of the best easy comparisons might be the music of the Left Banke here in the US, or the way that strings were used to great effect in the music of Nick Drake. As always with Ace Records, the presentation is wonderful, with plenty of notes and a superb set list of 22 tracks that include "Please Believe Me" by Nirvana, "Say You Don't Mind" by Colin Blunstone, "Pictures" by Ray Brooks, "Off To Find A New Land" by Lea Nixon, "Alice" by Jon Plum, "When The City Sleeps" by Bombadil, "Mary Jane" by Erasmus Chorum, "Shapes & Shadows" by Tandem, "Forever Autumn" by Virgrass & Osborne, "The Sevent Hour" by Gordon Waller, "Very Well" by Les Payne, "You're Lovely" by Sunchariot, "Coathanger" by Clifford T Ward, and "Lifetime" by The Bliss. VariousWayfaring Strangers – Lonesome Heroes ... CD
Numero, 1970s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $7.99 18.98
Troubadour folk from the 70s and into the early 80s – collected from rare privately issued records – the third set in the Wayfaring Strangers series from Numero! Lonesome Heroes is the male companion set to the equally excellent Ladies Of The Canyon compilation – and it features a haunting mix of spare, kind of eerily melodic vocal & guitar tunes, almost all of them by singer/songwriters who have remained largely unknown to this day. The melodies and chords are mostly on the tender, delicate side, and the voices range from gruff storytelling to sweeter singing. It really stands on its own really well in the Wayfaring Strangers series, too – the guitar playing is in service of the songs here, unlike the accomplished pickers & strummers on the Guitar Soli set, and the tunes aren't as airy as the Ladies From The Canyon material. Wonderful stuff, beatifully packages with great notes on the songs and artists, which should could go without saying, since this comes from the Numero Group! Titles include "Before" by Jim Schoenfeld, "It's So Profound" by Jim Ransom, "As I Walk" by Richard Smyrnios, "No Love Lost" by Tucker Zimmerman, "Hummingbird" by Kieran White, "The Tailor" by Jack Hardy, "Little Children" by George Cromarty, "Deep Night" by Tony Trosley, "Good Morning" by Tim Ward, "I Am The Moonlight" by John Villemonte, "O'Light" by Robb Kunkel and more. 17 tracks in all. One of the great records made by the cool French jazzy vocal group that included Ward Swingle and Christine LeGrand, and which did stuff that was much more straightforwardly jazzy than the semi-classical work of the Swingle Singers. This LP's got them backed by Jerome Richardson and his quartet, and has them running through a set of tracks associated with Ray Charles' Atlantic work. Cuts include "Stompin' Room Only, "Hit The Road, Jack", "Yes, Indeed", and "One Mint Julep", and all have a swingin' jazz vocalese sound. Cool stuff by one of the great lost groups of the 60's. Lux and Ivy have given us plenty of great music in plenty of great styles – but the duo are probably closest to the raw spirit of the early rockabilly years – a sound that was instrumental in their music as The Cramps! Here, the duo dig through some of their favorite rare singles from way way back – the kind of obscure cuts that even go past some of the better-done European compilations in recent decades – and which remind us that Lux and Ivy were out in the field digging for rare records back in the early 70s – when some of these impossible-to-find numbers might still have been around. As with other titles in this series, the scope of subject matter is great, and the tunes are plenty wild – 52 tracks that include "Date On The Corner" by Don Feger, "Bip Bop Boom" by Mickey Hawks, "Sweet Rockin Mama" by The Hi Tombs, "Don't Bug Me Baby" by Milton Allen, "Did We Have A Party" by Billy Brown, "Chicken Rock" by Fat Daddy Holmes, "Blast Off" by Alden Holloway, "Lonely" by Bobby McDowell, "Here Kitty Kitty" by Jimmy Murphy, "I'm A Madman" by Willie Ward & The Warblers, and "Woodpecker Rock" by Nat County & The Braves. An amazing tribute to the Bakersfield scene – one that finally gives the California city the same sort of attention that we usually see in sets dedicated to Nashville! Bakersfield is well-known as the home of Merle Haggard and Buck Owens, but the city's got a long legacy of influencing country music for decades – a good deal of which is presented here, in a package that brings together loads of rare Cali country singles that we never would have heard otherwise, along with well-chosen cuts from some of its stars, and a fair bit of rare and unissued material too! At the center of the set is a huge hardcover book by Scott Bomar – hardcover, 12" square, and with 224 full color pages of notes and images on the genius of Bakersfield, and what made it such a unique country music spot. Duke/Jasmine (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A double-header of a set – one that brings together rare work from two great 50s singers on the Duke/Peacock label – both of whom get a fair bit of space in the collection! Buddy Ace was actually named James Land at the start, but was dubbed Buddy Ace after the death of Johnny Ace – one of the first big Duke records stars, and a key force in the early years of rock and roll. Buddy's style is maybe a bit warmer at times than Johnny, but he also gets all the fantastic Duke Records production that made Bobby Blue Bland so great at the start – core blues augmented with larger arrangements, and jazz currents that can make the music a lot more sophisticated than on other labels! There's definitely plenty of blues in the mix, including strong guitar leads on some tunes – and titles include "Screaming Please", "This Little Love Of Mine", "From These Roots", "It Can't Be True", What Can I Do", "Back Home", and "Won't You Reconsider". The set then moves onto a great batch of work from Al TNT Braggs – a singer who definitely earns the explosive part of his name – especially on the upbeat numbers that are equal parts R&B and early rock and roll! Al's got a very distinct, dexterous approach to the music – one that's also really pointing the way towards 60s soul – on titles that include "Chase Em Tom Cat", "A Little Bit Closer", "We Belong Together", "Easy Rock", "You're Something Else", and "Cigarettes & Coffee". A stone classic from Cannonball Adderley – and a pivotal set that has him continuing the live recording setting of some of his best 60s albums, while also stretching forward to some of the more inventive ideas of the latter part of the decade! David Axelrod produced, and the album's definitely got his ear firmly in place – a great way of bringing together the album's hip instrumentation – Cannon's alto, Nat Adderley's cornet, and the wicked electric piano of Joe Zawinul – played here in a style that would go onto have a huge influence on countless other musicians on the instrument. Rhythm is by Victor Gaskin on bass and Roy McCurdy on drums – and as with other Axelrod live albums, there's some great spoken bits left in the mix – Cannon's charming conversation with the audience, which really opens up the tunes. Titles include the 2 title hits – "Walk Tall" and "74 Miles Away" – plus "I Remember Bird", "Oh Babe", and "Do Do Do". CD

The set was recorded at a time when the jazz underground was really getting a lot of exposure, and was bursting forward with a new sense of hope – a quality that you can really feel in the music, right from the very first note – as these tunes are joyous, yet highly rhythmic and spiritual too – a vibe that's maybe a bit like Pharoah Sanders on Theresa Records, especially on his classic "You Got To Have Freedom"! Most tunes here are upbeat and modal – driven by the rhythms of Ron Burton on piano, Abdu Wali on guitar, Sabu Adeyla on bass, Idris Muhammad on drums, and Abdus Saboor on percussion – and soaring with solos from leader Kamal Abdul Alim on trumpet, James Spaulding on alto and flute, and Bobby Watson on alto and soprano. Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $7.99 16.99
A brilliant new vision for the legendary Banda Black Rio – the pioneering samba, soul and funk combo that broke so much ground in the 70s and remain vital to this day – led here by William Magalhaes, in a mode that celebrates decades of the best Brazilian music, while fearlessly moving it forward! William's father Oberdan Magalhaes was a driving force behind the original Banda Black Rio, and we couldn't really imagine a more appropriate new vision for the group than his son's. The expansive group brings a depth of percussion, horns, strings and vocals – delivering timeless and dexterous jazzy Brazilian funk and dancefloor soul. Billy Bang & William ParkerMedicine Buddha ... CD
No Business (Lithuania), 2014. New Copy ... $9.99 18.99
Wonderful work from two players who've just gotten better and better over the decades – both musicians who've made a huge impression from the late 70s onward, but who also continue to grow and refine their ideas as the years go on! This set features beautiful duets recorded at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York, in 2009 – with Bang on violin and thumb piano, and William Parker on bass, plus a bit of shakuhashi and dousn gouni as well. Both players handle strings at a level that's far different than most of their contemporaries or influences – and have this sublimely spiritual style that's often a bit exotic too – but never in the sort of easier ways of Bang's Vietnam-related projects. Instead there's a very freely creative spirit as both players come together – finding a unique voice that's extremely moving, and never too heavy-handed – a huge reminder of why we love them both so much. Titles include "Bronx Aborigines", "Eternal Planet", "Buddha's Joy", "Medicine Buddha", and "Sky Song". CD

Gato Barbieri & Dollar BrandHamba Khale (aka Confluence) (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Freedom/Muzak (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $24.99
Two jazz giants of the 70s come together on this rare Italian recording from the late 60s – South African pianist Dollar Brand (Abdulla Ibrahim) and Argentine tenorist Gato Barbieri – both working here in spare duo formation, with edges that are a fair bit sharper than most of their later work! The format is incredibly spare – just tenor and piano, plus some occasional cello work by Brand – dark and angular, but also filled with small flowers of hope, flowering in the spontaneous presence of these two great minds – a tremendous spirit that makes the record very different than freer jazz outings, and which maybe points the way towards some of the classic European tenor/piano recordings to come. Tracks are long, with a free flowing quality that's infused with soul and spirit – and titles include "Hamba Khale", "The Aloe & The Wildrose", and "To Elsa". CD

Groovy 60s work from Mexican singer Javier Batiz – working here with Los Fink Chorus, who turn out to be a pretty hip little combo! Batiz sings in English throughout, often with influences from American blues and R&B of the past, but turned towards more rockish aims in the end – or towards soul on a few of the album's best tracks. Instrumentation features tenor, alto, and baritone sax – plus trumpet, guitar, bass, and drums – and titles include "Aquarius/Let The Sunshine In", "Hard Life", "Lucila", "Slippin & Slidin", "Bye Bye Baby", and "The Best I Can". Beau BrummelsBeau Brummels 66 ... LP
Warner, 1966. Very Good ... $11.99
The Beau Brummels' debut for Warner Brothers – surprisingly, a record of all cover versions – but one that's still plenty darn great! Although the tunes here are all quite familiar, they're also give some pretty unique treatment – often Brummel-ized with a mix of rootsier rock influences, and topped with tremendous lead vocals from Ron Elliott – easily one of the most distinct voices of his generation! Elliott's inflections and the group's instrumentation really turn these tunes into something new – and the album's a great illustration of the old adage that "it's not the song, but the singer!" Titles include "Bang Bang", "Play With Fire", "Woman", "Yesterday", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", "Homeward Bound", "Mrs Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter", and "Monday Monday". Sony (Italy), 2021. New Copy ... $24.99 29.99
Mario Biondi looks a bit angelic on the cover, but his vocals are still nicely down to earth – that wonderfully raspy charm that made us love his music right from the start, and which makes Mario one of the key folks to carry forward the legacy of older jazz singers like Mark Murphy or Mose Allison! Part of that legacy is heard here in remakes of classic Blue Note tunes – but there's also plenty of Biondi's own touches as well – partly in the original songs he brings to the date, but also in the work with Italian groups like the High Five Quintet and Fabrizio Bosso Spiritual Jazz Trio – not to mention his own group, led by keyboardist Massimo Greco – and work on two tracks by Incognito too! With all that instrumental talent on board, the album's a jazzy delight throughout – and titles include "Jeannine", "Paradise", "No Show", "Cantaloupe Island", "Someday We'll All Be Free", "Give Our Love Another Chance", "Dream For Two", "Sunny Days", and "Simili". Franco BixioEd Ora – Raccomanda L'Anima A Dio (with bonus track) ... CD
Digitmovies (Italy), 1968. New Copy ... $19.99 28.98
A very early soundtrack from Italian great Franco Bixio – done when he was just a lad of 18, before his fame with Vince Tempera – but with a sound that puts the young Franco on equal footing with the best of the spaghetti western generation! The score begins with a groovy vocal tune – "Just A Coward", sung in English by Mary Ushua – then moves into the kind of material that you'd expect from the period – but sometimes inflected with instrumentation that is almost more 60s than western, especially on some of the tracks where electric guitar has a bit more prominence. The CD marks the first time that most of this material is issued commercially – an 19 track set that features two versions of "Just A Coward". CD

✨✧ Steven BlushNew York Rock – From The Rise Of The Velvet Underground To The Fall Of CBGB ... Book
St Martins, 2016. New Copy ... $7.99 34.99
That's quite a cover photo on the book – and the interweaving of key talents in the image really gets at the style of the narrative within! Author Steven Blush delivers a decidedly one-sided document of the New York scene from the late 60s onward – a picture of countless creative musicians, working alongside each other to create sounds that would go onto transform a generation – often in ways that were strongly inspired by the city itself. The book is less of a long story, than a history that encapsulates moments, focuses on figures – and even lays out groups in some index-styled passages – showing their strengths and weaknesses, and often augmenting the text with countless comments from singers and musicians who were part of the scene. In a manner similar to other rock books in recent years, Blush allows plenty of space for other folks' voices – sometimes almost making the whole thing feel like an oral history of the New York scene, but one that's directed by his own choices and sense of structure. The softcover book is almost 500 pages long, and has a fair bit of black and white photos too. Book

✨✧ BohannonOn My Way ... LP
Mercury, 1978. Near Mint- Gatefold ... $11.99
A bit of a different sound than usual for Bohannon – but a great one as well! The album's got a slightly different pitch than some of Bo's more straightforward dancefloor work – and the rhythms are electric, sometimes skittish, and often a bit spooky – almost prefacing changes to come a few years later, but also showing a bit of a German progressive influence too. We might be tempted to say that the sound's a bit smoother than before, but there's actually a lot of rough edges and weird corners to the tracks – in a way that makes the record more unsettling than it is slick! The rhythms, as always, are the main focus – and they're pretty darn great, and often surprisingly complicated. Don't know who could really dance to this, but that's hardly the point – and titles include "Git On Up", "Maybe You Can Dance", "I Found My Love On A Saturday", "You & I", and "On The Weekend". Bonzo Dog Doo Dah BandLet's Make Up & Be Friendly ... LP
United Artists, 1972. Very Good+ ... $3.99
The last album from the legendary Bonzo Dog Band – issued at a time when the group were going their separate ways, hence the somewhat ironic title! The set's possibly a bit more musical than before – and almost even shows some traces of the hipper, artier side of the British scene that was bubbling under in the jazz rock generation – that mix of sounds and styles that would emerge more fully on Virgin Records in the next few years. Instrumentation is actually quite focused at times – and includes saxes, flute, xylophone, and some surprisingly well-played guitar. But most noteworthy are the more straightforward lyrics of some tunes – the lack of jokes and more personally poetic moments in their place. There's still a fair bit of funny bits, too, though – and titles include "The Strain", "Turkeys", "King Of Scurf", "Waiting For The Wardrobe", "Slush", "Bad Blood", and "Rawlinson End". Fabrizio Bosso & Spiritual TrioSomeday ... CD
Warner (Italy), 2020. New Copy ... $9.99
A very groovy record from Italian trumpet legend Fabrizo Bosso – one that features a group referred to as his Spiritual Trio, but a combo that's maybe got more of a soul jazz vibe overall – as the lineup features Alberto Marsico on organ and Alessandro Mnetto on drums! The spare format is great – open in ways that always seem to bring out the best phrasing in Bosso's horn, but with just the right moments of groove that have the trumpet and organ dancing together nicely – almost a newly-conceived variation on the the older 60s pairing of tenor and Hammond! Mario Biondi provides guest vocals on a remake of the Donny Hathaway tune "Someday We'll All Be Free" – and other instrumental tunes include "Sermonette", "Cold Duck Time", "Bernie's Toon", "I Shall Wear A Crown", "Forward", "A Lullaby", and "Say It Loud". ✨✧ Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... $44.99 47.99
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". This version features a heavy velvet box, a business card, a black velvet slipmat, a photo book, inner sleeves – and a bonus EP, with the five bonus tracks "Message From Charles", plus stripped-down mixes of "Loving You Baby", "How Long", "Strictly Reserved For You", and "The World". BrahjaBrahja (180 gram pressing) ... LP
RR Gems (Estonia), 2019. New Copy Gatefold ... $29.99
Deeply textured jazz from Devin Brahja Waldman – working here in a mix of acoustic and electric modes that's not unlike some of our favorite recent material from Greg Foat – but much more complex overall, and with a stronger spiritual vibe! Waldman handles various saxes, piano, and keyboards – in a lineup that's also heavy on more keys and percussion – but always presented in a way that's layered and cohesive – not as much individual performance within the group, but an overall sound – so that familiar elements are a bit abstracted, even when the songs are tuneful and forward-flowing. There's a few moments that get slightly avant, but most of the work is in darker, moodier territory – and also features guest work from Daniel Carter on soprano sax, Margaret Morris on voice, and Sam Shalabi on guitar. Titles include "Medicine Woman", "Welcom To Wohlom", "Return Of The Good Enemy", "In The Mess", and "Just Passing Through". LP, Vinyl record album

Lincoln Briney, 2016. Used ... $8.99
A beautiful, beautiful record from Lincoln Briney – a jazz singer at heart, but one who's also got a hip underground vibe, too – a style that really takes us back to that unique 70s moment of singers like Kenny Rankin or Michael Franks at their early best! Like both of those artists, Briney's not content to keep his vocals focused on conventional material – and here unlocks the best work of the team of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel – wonderful songs from their late 60s years, served up here by Lincoln in a mode that's almost bossa jazz – with light rhythms, warm keyboards, and lots of guitar providing this instrumental glow that really illuminates the tunes in a new way – while Briney sings the lyrics at a level that's completely different too. The choice of songs is wonderful – not just the hits, but some overlooked album gems too – and titles include "Bookends", "So Long Frank Lloyd Wright", "Old Friends", "Song For The Aking", "Punky's Dilemma", and "April Come She Will". Barbara BrownGot To Be Somebody – The XL Sessions – 60s Memphis Gold ... LP
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $19.99 22.99
A great full length collection of work by Memphis singer Barbara Brown – a vocalist who appeared both as a solo act, and with her sisters – on a variety of singles for labels like Cadet, Atlantic, Tower, and MGM in the late 60s and early 70s! Barbara's got a deep, rich voice that's clearly schooled in gospel, but pointed towards more secular ends – an approach that's very much in keeping with the best late 60s wave of soul from Atlantic Records, and which is carried off here with a sharpness and precision that's simply mindblowing! Why Brown never scored bigger is a real mystery to us, because these tunes come off like the cream of the crop of southern soul at the end of the 60s – not just obscurities for obscurity sake, but some of the highest level of soul a female soul singer could hope for at the time! Titles include "Can't Find No Happiness", "Plenty Of Room", "A Great Big Thing", "Things Have Gone To Pieces", "Man Around The House", "Play Thing", "I'm Gonna Start A War", "I Don't Want To Have To Wait", "It Hurts Me So Much", "Got To Be Somebody", "There's A Look On Your Face", and "If I Can't Run To You I'll Crawl". Late work from Italian sound library giant Sandro Brugnolini, but great work too – a set that shifts a bit in the styles of instrumentation used, but which follows lots of the same dark passages that Sandro explored in the 70s! The keyboards and electronics are more digital than analog, but never have that cheesy, tinny sound of mainstream work from the time – proof that Brugnolini is a real master of sound, with an ear tuned towards bringing out the richest possibilities from his instruments! A few titles have a more mainstream soundtrack vibe, while others are in a more atonal mode – and titles include "Vapor Killer", "Barbarel", "Omen Nemo", "I Remember Sax", "Young Clan", "Baby Gang", and a number of titles dedicated to the Russian painter, variations on "Kandinsky". Sandro BrugnoliniSuperground (180 gram vinyl) ... LP
Four Flies (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $32.99 39.99
Some of the trippiest sound library material we've ever heard from Sandro Brugnolini – in part because the core group here is a psychedelic combo, which might have led to a few of the tracks being used in a short animated film on Sharon Tate and Charles Manson! Yet as with most of the great sound library albums of the time, the music is way more than conventional – as guitar, organ, bass, and drums are arranged, recorded, and produced in very unusual ways – with a really open ear towards the fuller, larger sound – which includes great effects and other elements along the way! The whole thing's very groovy – kind of mid 60s Italian mod soundtrack styles meeting the psychedelic generation – and titles include "Kissing", "Villa Polanski", "Sharon Tate", "Hip Now", "Lovable", "Petting", "Under Funeral", and "Malattia".
