Bulk Vinyl Records60 Count Box of Random Bulk Vinyl ... Misc
Good ... $4.99
A completely random assortment of 12" records – both LPs and singles – some in good shape, some totally beat up! We make these boxes at random, and seal them tightly – and even we don't know what's in them. Keep in mind that this vinyl has been through the regular racks – and the Bargain Basement – and some of it might have defects, some may have damaged or missing covers, and the vinyl will mostly likely be a mix of 12" singles and full albums – and might, in some occasions, also include some 10" pressings from the early 50s. Think of the contents as "raw material" or "space fillers" – vinyl to be used for projects, decorations, or even things like art installations or set dressing. At less than a dime a record, the price is certainly right! Misc

Bulk Vinyl RecordsBulk CDs – At Least 100 Random Bulk CDs ... Misc
Good ... $4.99
Here's a heck of a deal if you're into CDs – at least 100 completely random bulk CDs from our bargain basement – all packaged together! The CDs are titles that hit the basement for a variety of reasons – some are titles we just don't sell well, some might have a flaw in the artwork, and a rare few might have an actual defect, like a skip on a track – although these are usually very few. The styles vary as much as the CDs – so you'll get a mix of many genres, as random as the artists and titles included in the box – very much like the boxes of random vinyl we sell here too. At this price, you're paying a nickel or less per CD – so you might even think about re-using the discs in creative ways – or maybe changing out the better jewel cases for some of the damaged ones in your collection! Chocolate Buttermilk BandHead Games – The Story of Larry Akles & CBM Records ... LP
Past Due, Early 80s. New Copy 2LP ... $30.99
The overlooked legacy of the Chocolate Buttermilk Band – a long-running combo from the North Carolina scene – one who opened for or backed up some of the biggest soul artists to visit their state – then created some great music on their own! Make no mistake, these guys are way more than just a backing band – as their years of experience gave them some mighty sharp skills, with the kind of top-shelf large funk ensemble instrumentation that you'd expect to hear from a group on a much bigger label – not the kind who were releasing tracks on their own small imprint. The range of work here is also pretty great too – not just catchy funk tracks, but also some well-crafted mellower cuts and ballads thrown into the mix – really showing these guys as a fully-formed R&B act who might have broke bigger, had they gotten the chance. Titles include "Head Games", "Mr LSD", "Freaking", "Chills", "No Way", "Baby Don't Let Go", "Ain't No way", and "Can't Let Go". LP, Vinyl record album

Otis ClayHi Records Single Collection ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
A great slice of work from Chicago soul singer Otis Clay – a collection of his 70s singles for the Hi Records label – a number of which never appeared on his albums at the time! Clay's work was some of the best male soul on the label next to Al Green – and he received a similar careful treatment in the studio from producer Willie Mitchell – who made Clay's vocals come across with a richness that really topped his earlier singles from the Windy City! This package features some great numbers that were originally issued only as 45s – including "It Was Jealousy", "You Can't Escape The Hands Of Love", "Let Me Be The One", "Brand New Thing", "I Didn't Know The Meaning Of Pain", "If I Could Reach Out", "You Did Something To Me", "You Hurt Me For The Last Time", "Show Place", and "Baby Jane" – plus some other great tracks too! A well-done look at the legendary Blue Note Records label – a company that's been essential to what we do here at Dusty Groove! The documentary follows a relatively straightforward approach, but the content is great – as the film mixes rare archives, contemporary sessions, and conversations with key artists who include Herbie Hancock, Robert Glasper, and Wayne Shorter – really illuminating the strengths of the label over decades, and its continued impact in the world of jazz and beyond. I Marc 4Thrilling Mortale – Thrilling Italian Library Music From The Vaults Of Nelson Records ... LP
Nelson/Vampi Soul (Spain), Early 70s. New Copy ... $28.99
Great grooves from this legendary sound library combo from the Italian scene of the 70s – but a set that also features some of their more unusual, offbeat styles too! We've stocked plenty of records by I Marc 4 over the years – and have always loved them for their tight blend of jazz, funk, and instrumental soundtrack modes – but this set shows the combo at their most creative, as there's often some cool effects and unusual sounds added to the blend of their more familiar elements – so that the record seems to shift from spooky to groovy and back again with effortless ease! If you're thinking that you've already got some I Marc 4 records in your collection, then think again – as there's a lot of new sounds here to discover, pulled from their very rare limited recordings for the Nelson label in the Telecinesound Studios – titles that include "Giallo", "Tensione Ed Attesa", "Temporale", "Atmosfere Spaziali", "Tema Di Raven 1o Vers", "Thrilling Mortale", "Smookie", "Immagini", "Corsa Pericolosa", "Ossessione Omicida", and "Suspence Subacqueo". Mirwood/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Heavy soul from Jackie Lee – one of the most hard-grooving singers to record on the west coast scene in the 60s! The package pulls together all of Lee's legendary sides for the Mirwood label – the classic Northern Soul album The Duck, and lots of equally great singles that have the smooth-toned vocalist working at a very uptempo clip! The package is the first to really do justice to all of this music – and it features a whopping 28 tracks all presented with wonderful sound quality, which really blows away any previous reissue – especially considering that there's some unissued material here too. And as always with Kent, the notes are as great as the track selection – 16 pages that tell the full story of Jackie's burning career at the time, complete with vintage photos and images. Titles include "Do You Love Me", "The Bounce", "The Duck (part 2)", "Hully Gully", "Do The Temptation Walk", "Land Of 1000 Dances", "A Man Ain't Nothin", "Oh My Darlin", "Try My Method", "Treat Her Right", "Tin Pan Alley", "Dancing In The Street", "Everybody Jerk", "Harlem Shuffle", and "Whether It's Right Or Wrong". OV WrightHi Records Single Collection ... CD
Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
Not just singles from the great OV Wright – but also a few live tracks and rare demo titles as well! OV's a hell of a singer – one with a voice that matches all the best on the southern scene of the time – and a great companion to some of the best deep soul material on the Hi Records label by artists like Otis Clay or Syl Johnson. And like both of them, Wright had recorded previously, but was able to find a new sort of presence at Hi – a more mature mode and sparkling Memphis production that really brought the most out of his wonderful vocals! Two of the tracks here – "Rhymes" and "Without You" – were only ever singles for Hi, and never came out on album. Two more demo tracks are wonderful – "A Fool Can't See The Light" and "I'm Gonna Be A Big Man Someday" – both very good numbers recorded with a grittier feel than usual. CD also features the cuts "Into Something", "The Time We Have", "Precious Precious", "The Bottom Line", and "We're Still Together" – plus live tracks that include "Love & Happiness", "Ace Of Spades", and "Precious Precious". Not your usual set of oldies – because in the hands of Ace Records, "rock n roll" and "doo wop" become completely new terms! The package goes way beyond simple hits and famous numbers – and offers up a great batch of unusual tunes from the less-known end of the musical spectrum during the big rock n roll years of the late 50s – forgotten numbers from both R&B singers and rockers, often served up in styles that are a fair bit rawer than material making the charts at the time. Fantastic soul tracks from a label we've been loving right from the start – the long-running Timmion Records – a Finnish imprint with an amazing ear for vintage sounds and funky grooves! We know what you're thinking – Finland is a very unlikely source for great soul music – but the company's also worked with American artists right from the start, and has a deep deep appreciation for the classic modes of the vintage 45 underground – which is why this whole package feels like a stack of rare singles you might have found in the back of a New Jersey record store from the 70s! Most numbers here are mellow or midtempo, and are in a mix of deep and sweet soul modes – all handled with superb instrumentation and production from Cold Diamond & Mink, who ensure that the whole thing has just the right vibe. A treasure trove of gospel from the New York scene – all recorded for the Revelation Records imprint – a partner label to Bobby Robinson's legendary Fire & Fury labels! Given Robinson's strong ear for early soul, R&B, and blues, there's a lot of rootsy power in these recordings – a way of producing both the vocals and instrumental passages in styles that definitely showcase Revelation's importance during these key birth of soul years – with lots of modes that would end up in secular soul a few years later! Inevitable/Cherry Red (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3CD ... $19.99
A great little package that finally gives the Liverpool scene its due – especially during a time when many other English cities are credited with helping to shape the sound of modern music! Late 70s Liverpool had little going on since the Beatles and Brit Invasion groups – but the rise of Inevitable Records gave the city a great voice to challenge the other punk and post-punk material of the time – and stood as an important stepping stone for a number of acts who went on to much bigger labels during the 80s! This package brings together all the a- and b-sides of Inevitable, along with replicas of all their cool 45rpm sleeves – important, as the label mostly just issued 7" singles – but with a force that has become legendary over the years. The package features 2CDs that bring together these singles, by groups who include Wah Heat, Dead Or Alive, Modern Eon, Nightmares On Wax, China Crisis, It's Immaterial, Faction, Freeze Frame, The Light, Builders, Box Of Toys, and Venus Adore – plus a full extra CD of Peel Session material from the early 80s by some of the biggest groups in the set! Chess/Universal (UK), 1960s/Early 70s. New Copy 2 CDs ... $11.99
Incredible sounds from the Chess Records catalog – not the blues that you might know the label for, but a huge range of funk, soul, and jazz tracks from the headiest years of the 60s and 70s – a time when the Chicago scene was really turning out some incredible musical hybrids! As you'd guess from the title, all the cuts here have had a new life in recent years – thanks to samples by hip hop artists or other producers – but the original grooves are even better than the tracks that used them, and come together here to make one of the most mindblowing collections of Chess material we've ever heard! The package is nicely heavy on sounds from the Cadet/Concept years of the label – with more than a few contributions from producers Charles Stepney and Richard Evans – and the package features 42 wonderful tracks – including "Fonky Thang Diamon Ring" by The Dells, "Windmills Of Your Mind" by Dorothy Ashby, "I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun" by Rotary Connection, "Jelly Jam" by Jack McDuff, "The Getaway" by Alvin Cash, "In My Body's House" by Gene Chandler, "Cross Country" by Archie Whitewater, "Memory Band" by Rotary Connection, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" by Jimmy Ponder, "Inside Out" by American Gypsy, "Go Go Power" by Sugar Pie DeSanto, "Shake It Up" by The Vibrations, "Up Above The Rock" by Ray Bryant, "Bad Moon Rising" by Bo Diddley, "Shoo Be Doo Be Doo Be Do Da Day" by Eddie Fisher, "Humpin Bumpin & Thumpin" by Andre Williams, "Who Got The Number" by Pigmeat Markham, "Walk On By" by Jo Ann Garrett, "Chocolate Candy" by Soulful Strings, "Got To Get Your Own (7" version)" by Reuben Wilson, "Hanky's Panky (7" version)" by Shirley Scott, "Liberation Conversation" by Marlena Shaw, "Look Of Love" by Monk Higgins, and "Think About It" by Odell Brown & The Organizers. An incredible companion to the book Enjoy The Experience – and like that volume, a set that's filled with gems from the obscure sides of the American recording industry – vanity and privately pressed records that are plenty darn groovy, and pretty darn funky in all the right spots! We're not entirely sure what a "stash box" means in terms of music – but after hearing this very groovy collection, we may well be using it as a term ourselves! The set features rare material recorded for the tiny Garland Records label in Salem, Oregon during the late 60s – but the sound and style is different than other Pacific Northwest material of that decade – often a bit sweeter and sunnier, with elements that resonate more strongly with changes taking place on the LA scene of the mid 60s – including some great harmony vocals on a few numbers, and a way of mixing slight psych touches with romping rhythms – all to to create sounds that are almost a garage equivalent of Sunshine Pop from bigger studios. Most of these tracks were never issued at the time, and even the few that were are pretty darn obscure – making the whole thing a treasure trove of really fresh music – with titles that include "Life Laced Leaf" by Inner Circle, "Maybe Today" by Tim Culbertson, "What Goes Up Must Come Down" by Fatty Twice Together, "Grey Day" by The Wild Side, "Parousia" by Lawe, "We'll Meet Again" by Tyme, "Part Time Love" by Will Logan, "Keep On Looing" by The Ultimate, and "Tears" by The New Dawn. A fantastic collection of postwar gospel recordings from the legendary Nashboro Records – one of the most important imprints for the music back in the 50s and 60s! We rank the work of Nashboro right up with the famous Houston-bred productions of Peacock Records – and as Peacock was part of the secular soul label Duke, Nashboro was also part of the blues powerhouse Excello – which means that the cuts here are put together at a level that's maybe got as much understanding of the needs of the record racks and jukebox scene, as they are aimed at the higher ideals of the lyrics! Nashboro excelled especially in the sorts of small vocal groups that can make gospel singles from this time every bit as much a slice of harmony heavy as rare doo wop tracks – and titles here include "Seven Angels" by The Trumpeteers, "Just One Step" by Little Johnny Jones & The Little Jones Singers, "I Received My Blessing" by Radio Four, "Touch Me Lord Jesus" by Angelic Gospel Singers, "Give Me My Flowers" by The Consolers, "I Would Not Be A Sinner" by Dixie Nightingales, "Jesus Keeps Me Alive" by The Skylarks, "Sit Down Servant" by Swanee Quintet, "When Jesus Stays Home" by Southern Echoes Singers, and "Rest From My Labor" by Supreme Angels. 16 cuts in all – and very nicely done! Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
Think you know Hi Records? Guess again – because this sublime set of rarities has way more Memphis soul than just the work of Al Green, Ann Peebles, and Willie Mitchell! The special package features lots of lesser-known cuts from the vaults of Hi – including a fair bit of upbeat singles that showcase more of a dancefloor soul side of the legendary imprint – music that's still got a fair bit of deep soul in the vocals, but which also shows a bit more Memphis snap in the rhythms – a great mixing of modes that lies in a space that's somewhere between Northern and Southern soul standards of the time. There's a huge amount of tracks here we'd somehow missed over the years – and titles include "Stepchild" by Venice, "So Good To Me" by George Jackson, "Help Yourself" by 5 Royals, "Farmer John" by Four Kings, "Hitchhike To Heartbreak Road" by Bobo Mr Soul, "Save The Last Dance For Me" by Henry Shed, "Frankenstein Walk" by Gene Miller, "I Want To Be There" by The Four Kings, "We've Got Everything" by T 99, "Hard Luck" by Bobby McClure, "Still Around" by James Fry, and "The Way You Do The Things You Do" by Ebony Web. Hi Records/Ultra Vybe (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... $13.99
The funky side of Hi Records – music that goes way past the mellow burning soul you might normally know from the label – served up here in a wealth of rare singles from the Memphis powerhouse of soul! Hi had a lot more going on in the 70s than just the big hits and classic albums that most people know – and the cuts here show a version of the label that was working every bit as hard as Stax to come up with fresh grooves and unusual ways of mixing southern soul and funk for the new generation! The set list is huge – 25 numbers, many of which should be pretty fresh to your ears – and titles include "Sweet Thing" by Willie Walker, "Slidin In & Out" by The Memphians, "Got To Find My Baby" by James Gadson, "Fried Chicken" by Rufus Thomas, "Everybody Got Soul" by Gene Miller, "Disco Hustle" by Heinsight, "If You Can't Please Your Woman" by Tuxedo, "Love Map" by Lyndon, "You Made Me What I Am" by Erma Coffee, and "Patricia" by George Jackson. Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata. Let's Dance/Still Music, Mid 80s. New Copy ... $9.99
A cool collection from the earliest years of the Chicago house music scene – a time when the city's grooves were maybe as beholden to the styles from overseas as they were the new vibe going on in the Windy City! Lots of these tracks have heavier beats than basslines, and almost reflect some of the ways that New York street soul was using drum machines in the years after hip hop got going – but there's also an approach that shows that strong Chicago love of import dance records from the UK, Italy, and beyond – with modes that were borrowed strongly, then reshaped to make the more familiar grooves that influenced generations to come. As with other Still Music projects, the package is as much a history lesson as a music compilation – a great look into a tiny little label, with detailed notes, and tracks that include "Jump Trax Mix Down" by Duane Thamm Jr, "Single Girl (voc)" by Knight Action with Sedenia, "R-Trax (special mix)" by Knight Action, "Crazy Or Not (inst)" by Mike Tomaselli, "Nobody (club mix)" by Joey O & Out Of Control, "I Like That In You (dub)" by Belinda Hoover, "Crazy Or Not (virgin)" by Mike Tomaselli, "R-Trax/D-Rail (single dance mix)" by Knight Action featuring Sedenia, and "Jump Trax Mix Up" by Duane Thamm Jr. CD

The sound's not entirely mellow – as LA's Solar Records was a label that was pretty dedicated to a groove – but the set does mix in some of the label's great midtempo cuts alongside its better-remembered groovers – all in a great summation of the sound and style that made the company a real powerhouse of west coast soul! The collection covers a good range of the label's strongest acts, and there's some nice surprises along the way, not just the Solar hits – as tracks include "Shine The Light" by Collage, "A Song For Donny" by The Whispers, "Call Me" by Bill Wolfer, "Charlie" by Carrie Lucas, "Two Occasions" by the Deele, "Computer Love" by Cat Miller, "Groovin" by Collage, "I Want To Love You Tonight" by Klymaxx, "Personality" by Dynasty, "Floating With The Tide" by Ralph Butler, "Come Back Lover Come Back" by The Sylvers, "Slow Jam" by Midnight Star, and "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by Lakeside. VariousOrk Records – New York, New York ... CD
Numero, Mid 70s. Used 2CD ... $24.99
A mindblowing tribute to one of the most important indie rock labels of the early punk years – New York's Ork Records – an imprint that was almost as important to the music as CBGB! The label only lasted a few short years, but had an uncanny ear for capturing the best new sounds of the time – that genre-crossing, style-blending mode that distinguished American punk from its early UK partner – and which sometimes had surprisingly strong ties to earlier scenes too. Ork was surprisingly open-minded, and maybe not as narrowly cast as punk labels would become a few years later – but that's also not surprising, given the scene in which they worked – which is captured here beautifully in a very lavish boo, well over 100 pages – not only filled with notes, details on the music, and the history of the label – but also countless photos from the early years of punk in New York too. But hell, the music is more than enough to make this set great – as the package features a wealth of excellent titles that include "Let It Blurt" by Lester Bangs, "Little Johnny Jewel" by Television, "Fa Ce La" by The Feelies, "I Won't Give Up" by Erasers, "All Of The Time" by Alex Chilton, "I Thought You Wanted To Know" by Chris Stamey & The DBs, "You" by The Idols, "Christmas Weather" by The Student Teachers, "Everytime I Close My Eyes" by Prix, "You Gotta Lose" by Richard Hell, "Fire & Smoke" by Marbles, "Connection" by Richard Lloyd, "Play With Fire" by Mick Farren & The New Wave, "Funky Kinky" by Kenneth Higney, and lots lots more! Federal/Dub Store (Japan), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Killer work from a time when the Jamaican music scene was really coming into its own – served up here from the vaults of Federal Records, who were one of the key imprints helping capture the new Kingston sounds of the 60s! Federal already had roots in Jamaican jazz and other styles, which they definitely bring to bear on the recording of these tunes – tracks that are very different than later revival ska, and even some of the late 60s Jamaican hits – and which often have a gritty quality that tie them much more strongly to the earlier styles that led to the music. As the package indicates, all tracks here are rare, and some are unreleased – with titles that include "Blue Ska" by The Cavaliers, "One Ska One Ounce Of Weed One Beer" by Clive Wilson & The Skatalites, "Third Man Theme" by Granville Williams, "What To Do" by Federal Singers, "Come Along With Me" by The Maytals & Don Drummond, "String Of Pearls" by Audley Williams, "I Man" by The Cavaliers, "Coppa" by The Maytals & Don Drummond, "Love Is All I Have" by The Federal Singers, and "Dip Them" by The Cavaliers. The Ru-Jac label is really on fire here – taking off with some sweet female soul singers, as you might guess from the image on the cover – in modes that mix their deep soul core with some nice jazzy touches too! Two big artists grab the first half of the collection here – Kitty Lane, who might have been right at home working for Stax Records – and Rita Doryse, a jazzier singer who recalls early Marlena Shaw material at Chess! Other artists here continue some of the male deep soul styles that have made Ru-Jac a real favorite for collectors of rare singles – and as with other volumes in this series, the package also includes a number of tracks that were never issued at the time. Titles include "When I'm Alone", "Wait Til Then", "Born To Be Loved", and "Please Let Me Love You" by Rita Doryse; "It's Love I Need", "Sweetheart", and "The Feeling Is Gone" by Kitty Lane; "I Would Cry" and "I Tell You" by Gene & Eddie, "Do The Roller" and "Working Hard" by Leon Gibson, "I Can't Stay Away" and "Who Can It Be" by The Caressors; "She's My Girl (demo)" and "My Love (demo)" by Winfield Parker, and "Sweet Little Girl" and "Finally Together" – both unreleased tracks by an unknown artist! Ru-Jac/Omnivore, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... $6.99
Baltimore's legendary Ru-Jac Records label at the end of the 60s – coming to terms with some of the bigger changes in soul music, which means that they're adding a bit more funk to the mix! As with all the previous volumes in this excellent series, the scope of sounds and knowledge here is amazing – really detailed notes that not only get at the difficulties and complexities of running a small indie soul label, but which also show the shifting side of the audience for the records, and the way that both the singers and label changed to keep up! Don't let any of the "changes" put you off, though – as the music here is excellent – filled with the deep soul vocals and strong sense of fire you heard on the previous volumes, and featuring some unreleased titles too. Almost all the work here was recorded between 1967 and 1972 – there's only one final single from 1980 – and titles include "She's So Pretty (backing track)" by The Upsetters, "Sugar" by Fred Martin & Revue, "Changes (part 1)" by Saturday, "It's No Sin" by Gene & Eddie, "Every Day" by Sir Joe, "Think Of Me As Your Soldier" by Jimmy Dotson, "I Loved You Once" by Willie Mason, "Days May Come Days May Go" by Utopian Concept, "When I'm Alone" by Fred Martin & Revue, "Keep Off The Grass" by Dynamic Corvettes, "Nothing" by Winfield Parker, "Let Me Go Easy (alt version)" by Gene & Eddie, "Go On Back" by Willie Mason, "It's A Trap" by Dynamic Corvettes, "Contagious" by Fred Martin Revue, "I'll Be Your Lover" by Jimmy Dotson, "Days May Come Days May Go" by Francine Long, and "Tighten Up" by an Unknown Artist. Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Producer Shel Talmy is maybe best known for his work behind some of the bigger rock artists on the UK scene of the 60s – but he also really had a great way with a gal singer too – as you'll hear in this killer collection of female pop singles from the time! The tunes here groove like the best from big names like Sandie Shaw, Dusty Springfield, or Cilla Black – with a similar focus of strong lead singer amidst some very groovy arrangements – but the songs are much more obscure overall, and stand strongly as a rich dip into the world of female British pop of the 60s, even if you don't care at all about Shel's legacy! Fortunately, we're huge fans of both – and completely adore this well-done collection – which has two dozen tracks we never would have heard otherwise, along with very detailed notes and plenty of images of the ladies within. Titles include a great version of the Brian Wilson tune "Guess I'm Dumb" by Dani Sheridan – plus "No More Love" by Liz Shelly, "Gotta Get Away" by Van Lenton, "Cruel Way To Be" by Debbie Sharron, "Surrender" by Perpetual Langley, "A Strange World" by Stevie Holly, "Stay At Home" by The Orchids, "This Heart Is Not For Sale" by Margo & The Marvettes, "Tar & Cement" by Liz Shelly, A Shoulder To Cry On" by Christine Holmes, and "A Ladies Man (alt version)" by Colette & The Bandits. Jazzman (UK), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $14.99
A really loving look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the Prestige Records label – a company that's famous for giving the world plenty of hardbop and soul jazz in the 50s and 60s, but which also helped lay the groundwork for American spiritual jazz to come! Long before Impulse, Strata East, MPS, and other labels were working with the music – and even long before Coltrane first started to soar into the cosmos – Prestige was letting its musicians really experiment with unusual rhythms, extended solos, and even some non-Western instrumentation – which resulted in a set of records that were years ahead of their time, and which still sound pretty darn mindblowing all these many years later! The package is a long-overdue entry in this hip series from Jazzman Records, and will also have you looking at your collection of older jazz in a completely new way – thanks to tracks that include "Summertime" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, "Love Theme From Spartacus" by Yusef Lateef, "Dorian" by Roy Haynes, "Rip A Dip" by The Latin Jazz Quintet, "Warm Canto" by Mal Waldron, "Organ Rounds" by Moondog, "Death & Taxes" by Walt Dickerson, "Song Of Delilah" by Ahmed Abul-Malik, and "Modette" by Roy Haynes – plus 70s tracks "I've Known Rivers" by Gary Bartz Ntu Troop and "Peace" by Idris Muhammad. Blue Note/Jazzman (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $18.99
A great look at a sometimes-forgotten side of the legendary Blue Note Records label – the company's strong wave of spiritual jazz material recorded during the 60s and early 70s – extremely fine music that's often eclipsed next to the company's better-known hardbop and funky jazz! As the 60s moved on, Blue Note became an even more open-minded label than before – and not only gave some of its key players the chance to stretch out and really spread their wings – but also brought some younger talents into the mix, who really expanded the vision of the Blue Note sound. Some of the tracks here are from the middle of the decade – and reflect more of the growing interest in modal jazz spurred on by Coltrane, Miles Davis, and others – while some of the later tracks are surprisingly righteous, sometimes political moments from players who would have sounded very different just a few years before. The package is done with the same amazing care and fantastic set list as previous Spiritual Jazz collections from Jazzman – and titles include "Verse" by Bobby Hutcherson, "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter, "At This Point In Time" by Elvin Jones, "The Rain" by Eddie Gale, "Poinsettia" by Andrew Hill, "Searchin The Trane" by Bobby Hutcherson, "The Phantom" by Duke Pearson, "Assunta" by Freddie Hubbard, "El Barrio" by Joe Henderson, "Plight" by Jackie McLean, "Gichi" by Booker Ervin, "Igbesi Aiye" by Solomon Ilori, "Blue Spirits" by Freddie Hubbard, "Cristo Redentor" by Duke Pearson, "The Morning After" by Hank Mobley, "Indian Song" by Wayne Shorter, and "Malaguena" by Pete LaRoca. A nicely-done overview of the Tabansi Records label – an important imprint in Nigeria during the 80s, and a company who really helped change up the groove for a whole new generation! Tabansi had a pretty wide range of styles in their catalog, but that also gave the label a way to merge things together at times – often criss-crossing electro soul with highlife, boogie funk with acoustic elements, and lots more unusual hybrids that have made their records stand out from the pack! The BBE label have been doing a great job with Tabansi reissues, and this set brings together some of the best tracks from that series, plus a few more – 13 titles that include "Akalaka" by Victor Chukwu, "Make You No Mind" by Ebo Taylor, "Zeal Anata" by Zeal Onyia, "Love Vibration" by Nkono Teles, "Oba Mimo Olorun Ayo" by Ojo Balingo, "Looking Out For You" by The Mandators, "You're My Solution" by Eric Kol, "Thina Dekula" by Lumingu Puati, "Super Star" by Tony Sarfo & His Funki Afrobisi, and "For The Love Of Money" by Zack & Geebah. Warner/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 22.99
A totally great entry in this always-great series – and one that looks at a slice of raunchy rock that's a bit different than usual! The Warner Brothers label started up right at the end of the 50s – after most of the other rock powerhouse imprints – and they also had more of an ear for pop and mainstream sounds, given their Hollywood home. Yet they also quickly found a way to turn out some really remarkable 45s – music that was maybe even just recorded with leftover studio time, or between the bigger projects on the label – funded by bigger money from films, and often done in a top-shelf studio setting! This legacy of Warner isn't nearly as well-known as their 60s pop and vocal material, but it's equally groovy – if not more so – and gets fantastic treatment here from Bear Family, who not only present a whopping 30 tracks, but also accompany the whole thing with a wonderful booklet that's filled with notes, photos, and record images. The set even includes some surprising rockers by unlikely sources – and titles include "Shimmy Shake" by Billy Land, "The Swing" by Johnny Carroll, "Teen Beat" by Don Ralke, "Road Hog" by Johnny Zorro, "Hanna Lee" by Shelly Dane, "The Fool" by Bob Luman, "Lucille" by The Everly Brothers, "Baby Please Don't Go" by Troyce Key with Eddie Cochran, "Drum Twist" by Buddy Harman, "Saturday Night Fish Fry" by Eddie & Betty, and "Forbidden City" by John Buck & His Blazers. Decca/Bear Family (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 22.99
A fantastic collection of rockers from the Decca/Coral family of labels – companies that gave the world key recordings by Buddy Holly and the Johnny Burnette Trio – and who also had a huge commitment to other lesser-known acts as well! This overstuffed package is a great illustration of the wealth of material that Decca, Coral, and Brunswick recorded back in the late 50s and early 60s – a time when they seemed to have a very open door policy with both rockabilly and hillbilly artists – who they often recorded with the raw power that you might normally find with a smaller indie label. If you know the classic sound of "Train Kept A Rollin" by Johnny Burnette, you'll know what these guys are capable of – and even though that track's not here, there's plenty more great numbers – including "Big Town" by Ronnie Self, "Crazy Dream" by Terry Noland, "Broke Down Baby" by The Tyrones, "Rock Of Gibraltar" by Hank Penny, "Man Hunt" by Dodie Randle, "Where'd You Stay Last Night" by Joe Hudgins, "Gonna Have Myself A Ball" by Lance Roberts, "Honky Tonk Freeze" by Sandy Coker, "The Raven" by Jackie Brooks, "Midnight Monster Hop" by Jack & Jim, "Blue STreet" by Arnie Derksen, and "Tarzan" by Glenn Reeves. 33 tracks in all! A tremendous celebration of one of the greatest house music labels ever – the mighty Trax Records, the Chicago home to some of the music's greatest work of the 80s! The 3CD set is a really massive package – featuring 2 CDs that offer live mixing of 34 of the label's classic tunes – plus a full bonus disc that includes an additional 12 tracks, unmixed! The feel is great throughout – with the stripped-down, no-nonsense, back-to-back mixing style that you'd often hear in the glory days of the Chitown scene – a straight-running set of house grooves that includes "Bring Down The Walls" by Robert Owens, "No Way Back" by Adonis, "House This House" by Mr Lee, "Can You Feel It (alternate)" by Mr Fingers, "Can't Get Enough" by Liz Torres, "In A Vision" by Virgo Four, "Washing Machine" by Mr Fingers, "House Music Anthem" by Frankie Knuckles presents Marshall Jefferson, "This Is Acid" by Maurice, "I'll Never Let You Go" by William S, "Children Of The Night (radio)" by Kevin Irving, "Acid Tracks" by Phuture, and "7 Ways To Jack (full version)" by Hercules. The second half of The Chi-Lite's full career on Brunswick Records – a great 2CD set that presents tracks from the album Chi-Lites, Toby, Half A Love, and part of A Letter To Myself – as well as a bunch of later non-LP singles for the label too! As the 70s progressed, the Chi-Lites seemed to get even better and better – moving past standard vocal group approaches, and picking up a more righteous style that reminds us a lot of Soul Generation or The Natural Four. As always, the tunes and production are great – and the 34 track set is filled with great numbers that are a lot less familiar than the group's early hits! Titles include "Don't Burn No Bridges", "You Don't Have To Go", "The Devil Is Doing His Work", "When Temptation Comes", "I'm Not A Gambler", "That's How Long", "Getting On Outta Town", "You Got To Be The One", "The Sound Of Lonely", "Stoned Out Of My Mind", "Too Good To Be Forgotten", and "Love Comes In All Sizes". Some moments are bold and full-on – especially when Dan is on alto, next to Flaherty – others are somewhat spacious, but still pick up this intensity as they progress – which happens often, given that three of the album's four tracks are well past the 20 minute mark! Universal, Early 70s. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic selection of work from one of the hippest girl groups of the 70s – the mighty Love Unlimited trio, three singers who all worked under the genius of Barry White in his prime! Unlike other girl trios of the time, who often used an older soul mode refitted with disco grooves – sometimes acting more like a chorus than a lead act – Love Unlimited always brought their full vocal strengths to play, and do a fantastic job here working in modes that rival some of the best male harmony groups of the early 70s – especially the sweet soul groups from New Jersey, New York, and Philly. And yes, Barry does kick up the groove a bit at times, but even then things are usually more in a midtempo mode, not a disco one – which makes for tremendous sounds throughout. This is the first-ever proper collection of the girls' singles from the early 70s – and titles include "Oh Love Well We Finally Made It", "Fragile Handle With Care", "Are You Sure", "I Should Have Known", "Is It Really True Boy Is It Me", "Walkin In The Rain With The One I Love", "Under The Influence Of Love", "It May Be Winter Outside", "I Love You So Never Gonna Let You Go", "I Belong To You", "So Nice To Hear", "People Of Tomorrow Are The Children Of Today", and "Share A Little Love In Your Heart". Fashion/Soul Jazz (UK), 1980s/1990s. New Copy 2 CDs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An overdue look at London's Fashion Records label – an important reggae imprint that was to the British scene of the late 20th Century what Trojan was in the 70s! But Fashion also had a quality that did them one better – they recorded and issued work that originated in the UK – documenting a reggae scene that had grown to be as important as Kingston by that time – thanks to trans-Atlantic flows of vinyl, and a fair bit of immigration from the West Indies too! The music here is strongly in the styles that really exploded in London during the stretch – and early digital dancehall material is offset by sharp-edged jungle rhythms, and warmed up by some lover's rock too – but always with a quality that's earthy, and very close to the streets. The label was run out of the basement of the Dub Vendor record store, which gave them a great ear for changes in sound and styles – and they've got a fascinating story that's fully documented here in the notes, in best Soul Jazz fashion. Titles include "Let's Dub It Up" by Dee Sharp, "Dance Pon De Corner" by Papa Face featuring Red Man, "Shot Fe Bust (Marvellous Cain rmx)" by Poison Chang, "Wikkeda" by General Levy & Hard N Pure, "Played By This Ya Sound" by Bunny General, "You're Nicked" by Laurel & Hardy, "Rising To The Top" by Dee Sharp, "To The Bump" by Papa Face & Bionic Rhona, "As You See It" by Cutty Ranks, "Bubble With I" by Asher Senator, "Ruffest Gun Ark (DJ rap mix)" by Top Cat, "DJ Business" by Papa San, "You'll Never Need Somebody" by Janice Walker, "DJ Jamboree" by Papa Face with Keith Douglas, "Heat" by General Levy, and "Sweet Soul Rocking" by Carlton Lewis. A much-needed look at an under-exposed side of the legendary Chess Records – the label's incredible run of gospel records, most of which were every bit as great as their Chicago soul sessions! This package is the first to really dig into that rich history – and has a wonderful focus on the grittier, funkier, groovier side of the label's catalog – served up here in a mix of rare album tracks, from records that have never been reissued – plus more stunners from funky 45s, most of which have been overlooked by soul collectors over the years. And yes, there's a spiritual message to these tracks, but it's often delivered with a very secular style – both in the vocals and instrumentation – as you'll hear on "Lord Keep Me Day By Day" by The Gospel Six, "Trying To Get Ready" by The Violinaires, "Soon I Will Be Done" by East St Louis Gospelettes, "Please Lord" by The Messiahs Of Glory, "Crying Pity & A Shame" by Salem Travelers, "It's So Good To Be Alive" by The William Singers, "Troubles" by Estella Burke, "The Whole World Is Watching" by Charlie Brown, "Same Old Bag" by Stevie Hawkins, and "Bless Me" by The Inspirational Singers. A fantastic tribute to one of the greatest soul labels of the 80s – the groundbreaking Uno Melodic imprint, started by soul legend Roy Ayers as a showcase for some of his more creative projects! The vibe here follows perfectly from Roy's classic late 70s work on Polydor – and his famous album with Ramp – with a wicked blend of jazz, soul, and funk – all given a very sophisticated, righteous spin – with rhythms and instrumentation that are way different than the mainstream! That doesn't mean that these tunes aren't groovers – just that many were so far ahead of their time, they've only gotten full acclaim in recent decade – thanks to new discovery by DJs and hip hoppers, who've sampled more than a few of these cuts. Hi Records way past the hits – served up here in a wonderful batch of rare singles that go way past the obvious numbers you may know from the label! Now Again/Stones Throw have given us a slight look at this scene in the past – most notably with their reissues of work by Ebony Rhythm Band – but this is the first really detailed dig into the label, with a huge amount of material that's only ever circulated on very rare original pressings. The work is a great mix of group soul, funky cuts, sweet harmony, and even a bit of gospel – and titles on this 2LP set include "Somebody Please" by The Vanguards, "You Made My Everything" by Words Of Wisdom Truth Revue, "Hum Bug" by Diplomatics, "I Didn't Know" by Funder Cooper, "Go To Work" by Revolution Compared To What, "Everybody Who Wants To Be Free" by Amnesty, "Can I Call You Baby" by The Pearls, "Take Me" by Fabulous Souls, "High On The Hill" by Squidd, "Soul Heart Transplant" by Ebony Rhythm Band, "See The Lord" by Mighty Indiana Travelers, "Huh" by Tony Black & Revolution Compared To What, "I'm Only Human" by Embers, "It Swells My Desire" by The PHDs, and "More Than I Can Stand" by Moonlighters. ✨✧ VariousPieces Of Trio Records – Mixed By Hiroko Otsuka ... CD
Trio (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A fantastic trip through the catalog of Trio Records – one of the coolest Japanese jazz labels of the 70s – and a company who not only gave growing local talent the chance to really spread their wings, but who also cut some great rare sessions by American artists too! The set here is heavy on work from the Japanese scene, and although the title says "mixed", the selection here isn't really all that funky – and instead presents Trio in all their glory – in a very hip combination of modal jazz, electric numbers, soulful moments, and even a few avant tracks – all balanced out beautifully with a great sense of pacing throughout. Titles include "Micro Worlds" by Kako TAkashi, "Young Girls Jumpin Dance" by Yoshinori Kondo, "Too High" by Sharps & Flats, "Mother Some Place" by Hiroshi Fukumura, "Malachi's Tune" by Yoshaburo Toyosumi, "Kappa Poetry" by Toshiyuki Miyama & New Heard, "Love Supreme (part 1)" by Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, "Methuselah" by Richie Beirach, "Turned Around" by Jack DeJohnette, "Sea Weeds" by Masaru Imada, and "White Fire" by Takao Uematsu. ✨✧ VariousSource – Funky Breaks & Sampled Soul Of TK Records ... CD
TK/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1970s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Famous tracks from the legendary Miami Soul powerhouse TK Records – famous not because they were hits in the 70s, but because they were used in later years as hip hop samples – dug from the deep well of music that TK recorded back in the day, to lay the blueprint for a whole new generation! The set brings together 15 gems that are not only funky, and which have key elements that you'll know from hip hop songs – but which also stand pretty darn strongly on their own, as a fantastic overview of the care of creation that TK brought to its work in the studio. Titles include "Groove To Get Down" by T-Connection, "Dedicate All My Love" by Raw Soul Express, "Sweet Thang" by The 13th Floor, "Living Together Is Keeping Us Apart" by Clarence Reid, "Good Good Lovin" by Charles Johnson, "To Touch You Again/Lady Blue" by John Tropea, "Givin Me Your Love" by Facts Of Life, "Dance With Me" by Peter Brown, "Why Can't We Live Together" by Timmy Thomas, and both versions of "90% Of Me Is You" – one by Gwen McCrae, one by Vanessa Kendrick. ✨✧ Quiet EleganceQuiet Elegance – The Hi Records Single Collection ... CD
Hi Records/Solid (Japan), Mid 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
The complete Hi Records singles of Quiet Elegance – a great 70s soul female trio formed by two former members of The Glories, and one of Martha & The Vandellas – who recorded for Hi with some mighty great production work from Willie Mitchell! The girls have a style that's similar to Willie's work with Al Green on the first batch of tunes – and which then opens into more of an Emotions-like style on later tracks – all the while sticking to a strong female harmony sound that never falls into the cloying style of other girl groups of the time. This is great stuff – the kind of lost soul that needs further discovering – and the package also includes three unreleased recordings and some alternate mixes too. Titles include "I Need Love", "I'm Afraid Of Losing You", "Mama Said", "I Need Love", "You've Got My Mind Messed Up", "Roots Of Love", "After You", "How's Your Love Life?", and "Tired Of Being Alone". Timmion/Daptone, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Tell Me That You Love Me" by Jonny Benavidez, "Lost Lost Lost" by Pratt & Moody, "Paint Me In A Corner" by Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, "Until You're Mine" by Wanda Felicia, "I'm Still A Man" by Willie West, "This Is What Love Looks Like" by Carlton Jumel Smith, "Bad Education" by Bardo Martinez, "Don't Believe You Like That" by Emilia Sisco, "This Love (part 1)" by Bobby Oroza, and "The Scorpio Walk" by Ernie Hawks & The Soul Investigators.
