✨✧ BlackaliciousBlazing Arrow ... LP
MCA, 2002. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge moment for Blackalicious – a group who'd been gaining plenty of cred on the underground, and who reached out to a much bigger set of ears with this major label debut! The whole thing's top-shelf through and through – superb production from Chief Xcel next to the words from Gift of Gab and Chief Excel – alongside a host of guests including Quannum mainmasts Lyrics Born, Lateef, and Joyo – as well as Dilated People's Raka and Babu, Jurassic 5's Cut Chemist and Chali 2na – and even work from Gil Scott-Heron and Ben Harper too! Clearly, someone had enough faith in the group to give them the money to realize their dream – and that faith definitely pays off here – on titles that include the classic single "Make You Feel That Way" – plus "Blazing Arrow", "4000 Miles", "Paragraph President", "First In Flight", "Purest Love", "Sky Is Falling", "It's Going Down", "Release (parts 1, 2, & 3)", and "Chemical Calisthenics". Gritty revival blues from RL Burnside – and a record that really broke his music into a wider audience! Of course, it helps that the set features guest appearances from Kid Rock and Lyrics Born – the latter we enjoy more than the former – but the overall vibe is still very much in the best spirit of Burnside's other music – on titles that include "Detroit Boogie (parts 1 & 2)", "Someday Baby", "Goin Down South", "Go To Jail", "Bird Without A Feather", "Glory Be", "Goin Away Baby", "Rollin & Tumblin", and "Stole My Check". Big StickDrag Racing EP ... 12-inch
Blast First (UK), 1986. Very Good+ (pic cover)... $14.99 19.99
The insane debut of Big Stick – a record that came out around the same time that Sonic Youth were really taking off, and Pussy Galore were first getting their feet wet – and a set that's as equally noise-filled as the early work of both! The group are a duo – John Gill on guitar and Yanna Trance on drum machine – and the sound is very spare, but very noisy – heavy beats that are almost hip hop meets industrial – colored with lots of freaky, fuzzy guitar lines – and topped with lyrics that have this offbeat sense of wit – all with an approach that's in that mid-80s moment when underground music and performance art were somewhat comfortable bedfellows. Titles include "Shoot The President", "Drag Racing", "I Look Like Shit", "Hell On Earth", and "Jesus Was Born (On An Indian Reservation)" 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ PrinceWelcome 2 America ... CD
NPG/Legacy, 2010. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A really fantastic album from Prince – recorded in 2010, and unreleased at the time – but clearly one of the greatest things he gave us in the final decade of his life! This isn't uncooked demo material, or under-thought studio tracks – and instead, the whole thing is a fully-formed record with a message that really comes through in the title – more political Prince than usual, with an eye for our nation that rivals Sign O The Times! It may be that back when Prince recorded the set, the time wasn't right for the message – but these tracks definitely hit home now – and are often delivered in this sinister slow funk mode that really fits the lyrics – almost as if Prince were trying to give the world his version of a righteous 70s album on Curtom Records. Titles include "Running Game", "Born 2 Die", "Welcome 2 America", "Check The Record", "Hot Summer", "Stand Up & B Strong", "Same Page Different Book", and "One Day We Will All B Free". CD

✨✧ Victor Chukwu/The Black IrokosAkalaka/The Power (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Tabansi/BBE (UK), Late 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Two rare albums from Uncle Victor Chukwu – a hell of a guitarist, and the driving force behind both of these Nigerian gems from the late 70s! Akalaka is a record that's maybe higlife in outward appearance, but which has a very different quality overall – in part because the guitar work from Victor Chukwu is so sharp and searing, there's often a bit more edge on some of the tunes than the lighter, brighter notes you'd usually associate with the genre! Plus, the vocals have this nicely echoey vibe – ringing out with a quality that's equally great, whether the lyrics are in English or Igbo – on long titles that include "Akalaka", "Born Throw Away", "Ogbu Mmadu", and "Nwanne Bu Nwanne". Next up is an album that Victor Chukwu did with the Black Irokos group – a set that's even more striking, and almost experimental at times – with all these odd elements played right down near the bottom of the guitar strings, which are then echoed out with effects that make them sound very cool next to the percussion! There's a bit of horns in the mix, but the guitar and offbeat vocals are the main appeal – on the long tracks "Onwu Uwa", "Anya Ukwu", and "Oge Chukwu Ka Nma". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Eddie HarrisEddie Harris Sings The Blues ... LP
Atlantic, 1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A pretty hip album – despite a stupid title – and one that proves the Harris was always willing to keep on growing as an artist. The record does include a few blues numbers, and Eddie does sing a bit – but he does so through his electric saxophone, which creates this cool flanged-out sound that barely lets you hear the lyrics, and which feels a lot more like some snakey sax solo than it does singing. Muhal Richard Abrams is on piano for most of the record, and most of the arrangements were done by Richard Evans – bringing together the Chicago avant garde and studio scenes in a unique blend of far-reaching tracks that would have been perfect in the Cadet years of Charles Stepney. Includes a swinging version of "Giant Steps", plus "Please Let Me Go", "Walk With Me", "Ten Minutes To Four", and "A Child Is Born". LP, Vinyl record album

Take it from us, Leon Bridges is no gold-digger – as with music like this, he'll be bringing plenty of the gold himself – as the record is the sort that should really put Bridges over the top! Leon's already been giving us some great sounds in recent years – but this set has Bridges emerging as a fully-formed soul star in his own right – not just the voice that's been winning us over already, but a sense of confidence and power in his lyrics – not ego, but self – wide enough so share space here on collaborations with Robert Glasper, Terrace Martin, and Ink – who all get a chance to bring a strong something extra, and not just show up as names on paper. Titles include "Born Again", "Motorbike", "Why Don't You Touch Me", "Magnolias", "Steam", "Sho Nuff", "Gold-Diggers", "Blue Mesas", "Don't Worry", and "Sweeter". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousGood God! – Born Again Funk ... LP
Numero, 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Damn funky gospel soul – the sort you'd hardly expect from spiritual folks like these, but which flourished strongly alongside more standard church-related work in the 70s! The package is a stunning follow up to Numero's first Good God volume – and really digs even deeper than that great set – pulling out a mad flurry of rare funky 45s that easily match any hip secular soul at the time, at least in the spirit of the groove! The lyrics are definitely on the righteous tip, but never too much so – and the earthly rhythms at the bottom of most tracks is more than enough to help pitch the grooves strongly towards anyone who's never even set foot inside of a church. As usual, Numero do an excellent job with the notes and details on all cuts – showing they really put a hell of a lot of thought into the collection – and titles include "I Know I've Been Changed" by Victory Travelers, "Pray A Little Longer" by Lucy Sister Soul Rogers, "Packing A Grip" by Golden Echoes, "Like A Ship" by Pastor TL Barrett & The Youth For Christ, "Been Trying" by Chicago Travelers, "The Same Thing It Took" by Inspirational Gospel Singers, "Somebody Watching You" by Sacred Four, "Peter & John" by Andrew Wartts & The Gospel Storytellers, "I Thank You Lord" by Little Chris & The Righteous Singers, and "Share Your Love" by Sensational Five Singing Sons. Majoie HajaryLa Passion Selon Judas ... LP
CBS/Mad About Records (Portugal), 1970. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 35.99
An incredible bit of global jazz from the French scene at the start of the 70s – one of those really unique records that's beyond easy definition, and which really represents all the cool criss-crossings in styles that were taking place on the Parisian scene at the time! Majole Hajary was born in Suriname, raised in Amsterdam, and has a background in Indian culture – but he also works here with the very groovy French arranger Roger Guerin, who plays trumpet and does a masterful job of bringing the whole thing together – in a blend of voices, rhythms, and instrumentation that all feels like some of the more compelling work on Saravah Records at the time! Lyrics are in French, traded between a few different singers with a very spiritual vibe – and Guerin's trumpet solos over the top, often like Donald Byrd in his "with voices" mode, but hipper – especially as other instrumentation includes sitar, organ, tablas, and lots of other great elements! Titles include "Judas", "Notre Pere", "Priere", "Gethsemani", "Les Apotres", and "La Mort De Judas". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Frankie Lee SimsLucy Mae Blues ... LP
Specialty, Early 50s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Rootsy blues from the 78rpm years – a collection of well-recorded Specialty Records material by Frankie Lee Sims – an artist who was born in New Orleans, but was also a Texas-raised cousin of Lightnin Hopkins too! Sims' music here has lots of the styles we love in Hopkins' work of the time – kind of an evolution of blues past the delta years, but not too far either – mostly acoustic instrumentation, including bold lines by Sims that accompany his lyrics – and a stark sense of recording that really lets the simple elements come through. Titles include "Married Woman", "Lucy Mae Blues", "Don't Take It Out On Me", "I'm So Glad", "Jelly Roll Baker", and "Wine & Gin Bounce". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Group Doueh & CheveuDahkla Sahara Session ... CD
Born Bad (France), 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
A bit of a change for Group Doueh – but a set that's every bit as wonderful as some of their previous work! The album has the group working with the French trio Cheveu – who add some more conventional guitars next to the snakey Saharan sounds you might expect – but never in a way that ever overwhelms the sound, and which instead is wonderfully respectful, and often seems to just bring a new focus to their energy. The mix is a bit like some of the Ethiopian recordings that were done by The Ex a number of years ago – music that's taken a bit from its roots, but never fully uprooted – even when some French lyrics might be a bit more dominant. Titles include "Charaa", "Azawan", "Moto 2 Places", "Bord De Mer", "Tout Droit", and "Hamadi". CD

✨✧ Mike Westbrook OrchestraCortege ... CD
Original/Enja (Germany), 1982. Used 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
Stunning work from Mike Westbrook – a set that's done in later years than his classics for Deram Records – but one that's got almost the same sort of power! The lineup is large, and there's a definite dose of freaky fuzz in the mix – thanks to the guitar of Brian Godding, whose contributions help electrify the record past territory of some of Westbrook's other material from this vintage. Kate Westbrook handles vocals on the set – singing some very offbeat tunes at times – but as usual, the real power comes from the full instrumental lineup – which also features Phil Minton and Dick Pearce on trumpets, Georgie Born on cello, Malcolm Griffiths on trombone, Chris Hunter, Phil Todd, Lindsay Cooper, and Chris Biscoe on reeds – and even some addition tuba as well! With the lineup, you can see that Westbrook's tapping into a younger generation of artistic players – and their presence really helps stimulate the overall presentation of the material. A number of tracks have lyrics from poetic sources by Blake, Garcia Lorca, Herman Hesse, and others – and titles include "Erme Estuary", "It Starts Here", "Berlin 16.2.79", and "Cordoba". CD

✨✧ Scott WalkerSundog – Selected Lyrics (hardcover) ... Book
Faber & Faber (UK), 2018. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Scott Walker started out as a pop star singing other peoples' lyrics – then he stunned the world when he went solo, and started to create some really amazing songs of his own! The Walker-penned contributions on the first few solo albums are still some of the most revelatory pop of the late 60s – and as the years progressed, Scott created some great words for his few projects of the 70s and 80s – then emerged as an even darker master of the pen with his reborn career from the mid 90s onward! Given the darkness and heavy quality of those records, Walker's words aren't always that easy to pull out – so it's great that this volume is strongly focused on material from albums that include Tilt, The Drift, Bish Bosch, and Soused – all of whom get really poetic presentation on the page – as the book is really more a volume of poetry than anything else. There's also a selection of new songs from 2016 and 2017, and a few selected lyrics from the early days too – in a hardcover volume of 198 pages. Book

✨✧ VariousPassion Of Charlie Parker ... CD
Verve, 2017. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A beautiful update of the music of Charlie Parker – one that takes off from the first vocalese recordings that were inspired by Bird's music in the bebop years – but served up here in a much wider array of styles! As with the early vocalese recordings – lyrical sides based around Parker's saxophone solos – these tracks all have lyrics set to Parker's compositions, sung by different artists on each tune – in a lineup that includes Kurt Elling, Gregory Porter, Jeffrey Wright, Kandace Springs, Melody Gardot, Luciana Souza, and Madeleine Peyroux – a diverse lineup that really makes for an amazing record. Core instrumentation is from a group that features Donny McCaslin on tenor, Craig Taborn on acoustic and electric piano, and Ben Monder on guitar – and titles include "Meet Charlie Parker", "The Epitaph Of Charlie Parker", "So Long", "Every Little Thing", "Los Angeles", "Life My Love For You", and "The King Of 52nd Street" – all new vocal versions of Charlie Parker tunes. ✨✧ Michael FranksArt Of Tea ... LP
Reprise, 1976. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A seminal classic from Michael Franks – one of those records that's almost a whole genre unto itself, and which set a whole new tone for the male voice in American music! The style here is light and jazzy – almost an evolution of modes first begun by Kenny Rankin, and served up here with a similarly compressed production style that really brings out the jazz in the instrumentation. Players include Michael Brecker, Joe Sample, Larry Carlton, and David Sanborn – all sounding great with a bit of added strings from Nick DeCaro. But the real star of the set is clearly Franks – whose light vocals and creative lyrics sound wonderful next to the electric piano on the set. Titles include "Eggplant", "Monkey See Monkey Do", "Jive", "Mr Blue", "Popsicle Toes", "St Elmos Fire", "I Don't Know Why I'm So Happy I'm Sad", and "Sometimes I Just Forget To Smile".
