Luv'd OnesTruth Gotta Stand (yellow vinyl pressing) ... LP
Beat Rocket, Mid 60s. New Copy ... $23.99 24.99
A very hip group from the Michigan scene of the 60s – an all-female outfit, but one with a sound that's a lot more raw than the sweet girl group sounds you might be expecting! The Luv'd Ones have a great way with a bassline and sinister guitar riff – at a level that often gives these tracks a garagey vibe that's really outta sight, and which is even more surprising when the vocals come into play with the instrumentation – very different than other 60s standards, with a quality that really sets these guys apart from the pack! The set brings together rare singles and a number of unissued tracks – all to make for a lost girl rock treasure that includes the titles "Scratchy", "Please Get Up", "He Cried", "Dance Kid Dance", "Stand Tall", "Yeah I'm Feelin Fine", "The Memory Of It All", "Up Down Sue", "Truth Gotta Stand", "Walk Me Too The Door", and "Stand Tall". Jaki GrahamJaki Graham – 35th Anniversary Collection (Heaven Knows/Breaking Away/bonus tracks) (4CD set) ... CD
Cherry Pop (UK), Mid 80s. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 40.99
A huge package of work from Jaki Graham – a set that features two full albums' worth of music, and even more than that in bonus material! First up is Heaven Knows – a really lovely little record from Jaki Graham – a set that's unabashedly turned towards the poppier side of the soul spectrum, but with the kind of care and class that made Jaki one of the standout acts of her generation! There's a mix of catchiness and maturity going on here – almost as if Deniece Williams and Phyllis Hyman got together and found a way to mix the best elements of their styles – carried forward with a style that has Graham shining equally well on the more playful numbers as on the serious ones. Titles include "Hold On", "The Facts Of Love", "Round & Round", "Heaven Knows", "Stay The Way You Are", and "What's The Name Of Your Game". Next is Breaking Away – a record with a wonderful balance between hook-heavy tunes and more serious moments – the kind of songs that offset Graham's chart appeal with a deeper presentation that echoes some of the stronger voices of the quiet storm generation of the 80s, while also pointing the way towards some of the crossover soul to come. Titles include "Set Me Free", "Breaking Away", "Still In Love", "Let's Get Blue", "Step Right Up", "Love Me Tonight", "Mated" with David Grant, and "Luv 2 Much". 4CD set features 34 more bonus tracks – all sorts of remixes, single versions, and other cuts from 12" singles and other sources from the time! ✨✧ Charles BradleyBlack Velvet ... LP
Dunham/Daptone, 2016. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". ✨✧ Ivan Boogaloo Joe JonesSweetback ... LP
Luv N' Haight, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A monster set of work by one of the funkiest guitar players ever! Ivan Boogaloo Joe Jones recorded a number of sides for Prestige Records during the early 70s – but this rare gem came out after all those, in 1975, on the tiny Joka label, and never really got into proper circulation at the time – making it one of THE indie jazz funk classics of the 70s! The album's actually one of Boogaloo's best – and has a rougher edge than his Prestige albums – heard to great effect on the two standout funky cuts, "Sweetback" and "Confusion" – both of which are stunners that feature Jones really ripping away on the guitar! The whole set's nice, though – and other tracks include "You've Got It Bad Girl", "Trouble In Mind", and "Jamaica Farewell". LP, Vinyl record album

Gloria Ann TaylorBe Worthy/Rich Or Poor/Tough Suzanne ... 7-inch
Luv N' Haight, 2022. New Copy (pic cover)... $11.99 14.98
Beautiful late life work from Gloria Ann Taylor – the soul singer best known for her rare work of the 70s, but heard here in a trio of tracks that are new – and completely wonderful! Funky soul maestro Misha Panfilov handled the arrangements and production – and Gloria plays piano and sings with a cool small combo who bring a richness to the record that we really didn't expect – making the classic singer come across in a way that's a bit like some of the Sharon Jones recordings for Daptone, but without the horns. All three tracks are originals by Taylor – really beautiful work from an artist we didn't know was still going strong! 7-inch, Vinyl record

A transatlantic duo hip hop effort from Marseille-based producer/DJ Creestal and New Jersey rhymer Moshadee – who team up as CM Jones! Diversely funky, gritty and timeless production from C and sharp, no nonsense rhymes from M – a nice effort that that shows what a universal medium hip hop is, not that you don't know that already. The global reach is no gimmick here, this is just straight up solid hip hop! Includes "Neva Lost", "Makin' It Raw", "What You Feelin'", "So Long", "On The Way". "Da Luv", "One Child", "Live Forever", "Rock On", "Say Likewise", "On Th Real", "Goodbye To The Struggle feat Theo Martins, "Word Is Bond" with Nemo Achida and more. CD

✨✧ Homeliss DerilexFraudulent (opaque brown vinyl pressing) ... LP
Stones Throw/Hip Hop Enterprise, 2003. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A record that was slightly slept-on at the time, but a real classic from the start of the millennium – a set that nicely took hop hop back to the tight beats and straightforward rhymes of the mid 90s – shaking free of some of the overdone trappings that were getting in the way of quality work like this – especially on the Bay Area scene, from which the trio hail! The record's got a wonderfully understated vibe – solid lyrics from Grand the Visitor, nicely snapping tracks courtesy G-Luv the Architect and just the right cuts at the hands of Mr Four Eyes, three of the Bay Area's finest to remind you of what's really real! Titles include "Subliminal Thoughts", "Fraudulent", "F*ck You", "Dead Grounds", "Survivin' The Game", "Only On Thursday", and "Lesson One". LP, Vinyl record album
(Limited to just 150 copies!)

Gato BarbieriChapter Three – Viva Emiliano Zapata ... LP
ABC/Impulse, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold ... $11.99
Amazing work from Gato Barbieri's legendary exploration of Latin American sounds for Impulse Records – a set that's heavy on Cuban influences, thanks to arrangements from the mighty Chico O'Farrill! The sound is sublime – a bit fuller than some of Gato's other albums in the run, but never with any slick or commercial styles – just more of a richness from O'Farrill's backings, matched perfectly by Barbieri's amazing tones on the tenor! There's a lot of Latin percussion in the backings – courtesy of Ray Mantill, Luis Mangual, and Ray Armando – and Eddie Martinez mixes in some sweet electric piano with his acoustic lines, deepening the soul of the record in a really 70s way. Titles include "Milonga Triste", "Lluvia Azul", "La Padrida", "Viva Emiliano Zapata", and "El Sublime" – the last of which is a good description of the record! LP, Vinyl record album
