✨✧ Gilberto GilGilberto Gil Songbook Vol 1 ... CD
Lumiar/Sony (Brazil), 1993. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Gilberto Gil's working here not as the main artist, but as the songwriter – the very special talent around which this excellent set of recordings is based! The package is one of our favorite in the Lumiar Songbooks series – and, like the rest, it showcases the tremendous compositional abilities of Gil – songs that have touched the Brazilian scene from the late 60s onward – presented here in a number of new recordings by some of his key contemporaries, and younger generations too! This first volume features 13 titles in all – with tracks that include "Aquela Abraco" by Tim Maia, "Amor Ate O Fim" by Emilio Santiago, "A Linha E O Linho" by Gal Costa, "Mar De Copacabana" by Leny Andrade, "Preciso Aprender A So Ser" by Fafa De Belem & Wagner Tiso, "Ensai Geral" by Chico Buarque, and "Pai E Mae" by Ney Matogrosso. ✨✧ Joao DonatoSo Danco Samba ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
Very tasty set of jazz tracks by legendary Brazilian pianist Joao Donato, performed as a loving tribute to Jobim, and with the same polished bossa sound as many other titles on the Lumiar label. Donato himself handled most of the arrangements, and the sound is nice and spare, with backing by sax, flute, and trumpet. The titles are all quite familiar, but Donato's playing is quite fresh, and the set is one of his best albums of the past 20 years. Titles include "Fotografia", "Vivo Sonhando", "Caminhos Cruzados", "Outra Vez", and "Wave". CD

✨✧ Carol Saboya & Nelson FariaJanelas Abertas – Interpretam Cancoes De Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1999. Used ... Out Of Stock
The lovely voice of Carol Saboya and the beautiful guitar of Nelson Faria interpret the work of Jobim in this sparkling set from Lumiar. As with the other recent Saboya release on Lumiar, this one's produced in a way that lets her lilting voice drift dreamily along, amidst some perfectly fragile arrangements that really bring out the best of Jobim's writing. Tracks include "Chora Coracao", "Meninos, Eu Vi", "Ana Luiza", "Chansong", "Foi A Noite", "Sem Voce", and "Bonita". CD

✨✧ Leny Andrade & Cristovao BastosLetra & Musica – Antonio Carlos Jobim ... CD
Lumiar (Brazil), 1995. Used ... Out Of Stock
A mellow set of sensitive interpretations of classic Jobim material, sung by the great Brazilian vocalist Leny Andrade, with backing by Cristova Bastos on piano. The set's mostly just voice and piano, and it's one of the mellowest Jobim tributes we've ever heard – sort of as if you were catching a nice after-hours set at a smoky nightclub in Rio (and believe us, if you've heard Leny's voice, that club must be pretty darn smoky!) Titles include "Vivo Sonhando", "Fotografia", "Wave", "Aguas De Marco", "Samba Do Aviao", "Ana Luiza", and "Outra Vez". CD

VariousBossa Nova – E Sal E Sol E Sul ... CD
Albatroz (Brazil), 2000. Used ... $6.99
New recordings of bossa classics – done in a sparkling modern style, but still with a relatively classic groove. Roberto Menescal arranged most of the tracks, and also plays guitar on many numbers – and performers include Marcos Valle, Claudette Soares, Leny Andrade, Cladia Telles, Tito Madi, Os Cariocas, and Carlos Lyra. Includes "Samba De Aviao", "Pode Ir", "Samba De Verao", "Nos E O Mar", "O Barquihno", "Chega De Saudade", and "Lobo Bobo". Nice stuff, and kind of in the Lumiar vein. CD

✨✧ JoyceJoyce Chante Antonio Carlos Jobim & Vinicius De Moraes ... CD
Vogue (France), 1987. Used ... Out Of Stock
An obscure Joyce album from the late 80s, and a very nice set of mellow readings of Jobim classics, performed with help on keyboards from the great Gilson Peranzzetta. Joyce's guitar and vocals are in the lead, and Peranzzetta plays electric piano and a bit of synth, in washes of sound that feel a bit like some of the more recent recordings on the Lumiar label. Titles include "Wave", "Canto De Ossanha", "Garota De Ipanema", "A Felicidade", and a fantastic scat version of "Surfboard/Samba De Uma Nota So"! CD

✨✧ Blue MitchellCup Bearers ... CD
Riverside/OJC, 1962. Used ... $8.99
One of the first albums to really show Blue Mitchell's genius as a leader – recorded past the more formulaic bop modes of some of his other Riverside sessions, and handled with a lyrical edge that really gets at the best aspects of his playing. Of course, part of the reason for this is that Blue's in the company of some of his Horace Silver bandmates – including drummer Roy Brooks, tenorist Junior Cook, and bassist Gene Taylor – but even more than that, the presence of a young Cedar Walton on piano really makes the set sparkle, as does the choice of some extremely strong material – such as "The Cup Bearers" and "Capers", both written by that young and glowing jazz compositional lumiary, Tom McIntosh, and the tunes "Turquoise, written by Walton, and "Dingbat Blues", written by Charles Davis. Forgive the long sentence, but the quality of this one's best expressed in a single breath! CD
(Out of print OJC pressing.)
