Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, & The London Symphony OrchestraPromises ... LP
Luaka Bop, 2021. New Copy Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
A fantastic record, and one of those cases where the presence of the mighty Pharoah Sanders can really transform the sound of a session! We'll admit that we weren't sure what to expect – but at the core, the record is really a set of duets between Pharoah on tenor and Sam Shepherd on keyboards – a great range that includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, celeste, and acoustic piano – slowly graced by some larger arrangements from the LSO! Yet even with the majesty of the larger group, who come into the proceedings in baby steps, there's a core feeling of intimacy that never goes away – sublimely spiritual sounds from Pharoah on tenor throughout – with phrasing and styles that show us that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since his early years on Impulse records. The album's maybe one of the most beautiful things that Sanders has given us in a long time – and that's saying a lot, as he's always pretty great – and the set features the long "Promises" suite, in nine movements – a piece for saxophone, strings, keyboards, and electronics composed by Shepherd. Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $25.99 27.98
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". Pharoah SandersHarvest Time/Love Will Find A Way (2024 Record Store Day Release) ... 7-inch
India Navigation/Luaka Bop, 1977. New Copy (pic cover)... $16.99 17.99
A totally great slice of 70s work from Pharoah Sanders – a rare Japanese single that offers radio edits of two tracks from his sublime project for India Navigation! "Harvest Time" is wonderful – this hypnotic bassline, watery light guitar lines, and a raspy, soulful tenor solo from Sanders that's completely fantastic! "Love Will Find A Way" has this romping conga and bassline dancing together – building with modal energy wrapped around a guitar line that snakes in the background – while these really soulful vocals make the tune sparkle before Pharoah comes in for a solo! 7-inch, Vinyl record

Pharoah SandersPharoah (2CD box set – with bonus tracks) ... CD
India Navigation/Luaka Bop, 1977. New Copy 2CD ... $27.99 29.99
One of the most fantastic Pharoah Sanders albums – and one that we'd rate head and shoulders above most of his other work! You rarely see this one, which is a shame, because it's not only a beautiful spiritual masterpiece, but it's also got a sound that's very unique, and a nice shift from the Impulse records too! Pharoah's playing with a small group that includes instrumentation you don't usually hear on his albums – like organ and guitar – but the addition of these instruments is used in a way that augments Pharoah's spiritual style, not suppresses it – in a lineup that includes guitar from Munoz, organ from Jiggs Chase, bass from Steve Neil, drums from Greg Bandy, and percussion from Lawrence Killian – all very unusual players, which furthers the unusual sound of the album! Pharoah vocalizes a bit on a version of "Love Will Find A Way" that has a warm spacey groove, and a nice conga base – and the other tracks on the LP are "Harvest Time" and "Memories Of Edith Johnson". This beautiful package also includes rare material added to the album – two long live takes of "Harvest Time", a tremendous track that features Khalid Moss on electric piano and Pharoah stretching out in Teresa Records soulful modes – plus great notes as well! CD
(2CD deluxe box set – with 64-page booklet! LPs come in 5" square sleeves, with artwork, inside a slipcover – and the booklet is great!)

Staples Jr SingersSearching ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2024. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A long-overdue second album from this very spiritual group – one recorded almost 50 years after their first, and with a sound that's maybe even deeper overall! Over the course of decades, it's clear that the Staples Jr Singers have lived a lot of life – which really comes through in their delivery of the material, which is deeply soulful, and served up here in a style that's a bit more secular than their work back in the 70s. Backings are very spare – often just guitar, bass, and drums – moving slowly behind the vocals to really let the singers take the lead! Sinkane handled production – and titles include "I've Got A Feeling", "You Got To Believe", Lost In A World Of Sin", "Don't Need No Doctor", "Get On Board", and "Living In This World Alone". CD

Staples Jr SingersWhen Do We Get Paid ... LP
Brenda/Luaka Bop, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... $20.99 22.99
A lost gospel treasure from this obscure Mississippi group – cut in the mid 70s, but with a stripped-down sound that's completely timeless overall! The Staples Jr Singers certainly have picked up some of the more righteous currents of mainstream soul and funk at the time – echoed both in their tremendous phrasing on the lyrics, and on some of the album's used of raw guitar licks next to their words – but the stripped-down vibe gives the record a feel that's almost more 60s deep soul overall – as befits their southern roots, and the album's issue on a small indie label! There's also maybe a bit less "church" on the record than the usual gospel outing of the time – more overall messages about love, unity, and feeling – which also gives the whole thing a very transcendent quality. Titles include "On My Journey Home", "When Do We Get Paid", "I'm Looking For A Man", "I Know You're Going To Miss Me", "Trouble Of The World", "I Got A New Home", and "I Feel Good". VariousBeleza Tropical – Brazil Classics Vol 1 ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1989. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $25.99 26.99
The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-represented in the US market – which makes the collection of work here completely essential. The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento. Luaka Bop, Late 90s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $21.99 22.99
David Byrne waited a full decade before giving the world a follow up to his original Beleza Tropical collection of funky Brazilian music – yet during that time, it's also clear that he learned a lot more about the scene – and was able to pick up on some very hip artists who were much more contemporary than the first time around! The record has a fair bit of late 90s gems from a time when Brazilian music was really catching fire again – inspired both by its own experiments of the past, and new attention to its more groundbreaking styles by artists up north – which then seemed to let loose a new era of fresh sounds and styles! The set's got a total of 15 tracks in all – and titles include "O Seu Olhar" by Arnaldo Antunes, "Coriosidade" by Tom Ze, "Tanacara" by Gonzaguinha, "Balanca Pema" by Marisa Monte, "Acho" by Carlos Carega, "Bog La Bog" by Carlinhos Brown, "Pregoes Do Rio" by Moleque De Rua, "Batuque" by Daniela Mercury, "Hoje Eu Quero Sair So" by Lenine, and "Rios, Pontes, & Overdrives" by Chico Science. ✨✧ William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 (3LP set) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 LPs Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". 3LP set features four bonus tracks not on the CD! The sound here is amazing – a really unique fusion of both the spiritual and funky currents running through Nigerian music at the time, graced with hypnotic percussion, rhythmic guitar riffs, and some very cool keyboard work at times – all topped with Alhaji's deeply soulful vocals. ✨✧ Shuggie OtisInspiration Information ... CD
Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

✨✧ Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

Luaka Bop, 2010. Used ... Out Of Stock
The brilliant full length debut of Kings Go Forth – a set we'd been eagerly anticipating after hearing their first few fantastic singles! The group hail from Milwaukee, an unlikely spot for a combo this hip – and they've got a sound that's smoking 70s soul all the way through – not just the deep funk you might hear from other groups working today, but a deeper soul spectrum that brings in bits of Curtom, New Jersey soul, Philly Northern, and a handful of other great 70s soul moments we totally love! As longtime fans of classic soul, we're pretty picky about the contemporary stuff that we rate – so take it from us, when we give these guys a 10 out of 10, we definitely mean it – and they've definitely done what it takes to earn our respect with a record like this. Vocals are wonderful – harmonized like some group soul 45 on most of the best cuts – and titles include "Fight With Love", "You're The One", "I Don't Love You No More", "One Day", "Paradise Lost", "Don't Take My Shadow", and "1000 Songs". Each song takes up a side of the record – but spins out in ways that are very different than Afro Funk work of a decade before – especially on the long jam "Let's Fall In Love", which feels as if some NYC breakdancers were plopped down in Lagos as invaders from space – and given the tools and power to reshape Nigerian culture completely to their own ends! "Good Name" has great electro appeal too – percolating beats, amazing keyboards, and this spacey blend of words and rhythms that's completely mindblowing! LP, Vinyl record album

Luaka Bop, 2006. Used ... Out Of Stock
A sweet second trip into the world of Nouvelle Vague – a strange place where post-punk tunes mix with bossa rhythms and French pop inspiration! Most of the tracks here are from the darker side of the pop spectrum in the early 80s – tunes that are well-remembered, but which were more underground numbers of the era, mostly recorded by British groups like Yazoo, The Buzzcocks, Bauhaus, and others. Enter Nouvelle Vague, who rework the tracks with lightly skipping rhythms that are far gentler than the originals – stripping out the colder electric modes and fuller production in favor of a bossa-inspired blend of acoustic instrumentation and lightly grooving production – all used as the backdrop for airily-produced vocals from singers who include Melanie Pain, Gerald Toto, Phoebe Tolmer, Marina, and Birdpaula. Titles include "The Killing Moon", "Ever Fallen In Love", "Heart Of Glass", "Shack Up", "Let Me Go", "Fade To Grey", "Bela Lugosi's Dead", "Dancing With Myself", and "Don't Go". ✨✧ Shuggie OtisInspiration Information – World Psychedelic Classics ... LP
Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Plus, this 2LP reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". ✨✧ Tom ZeBest Of Tom Ze – Brazil Classics 4 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1970s/1980s/1990. Used ... Out Of Stock
Although it's hard to understand from the perspective of over a decade (especially one that's seen Tom Ze rise to fame again), when this compilation was first put together, the music of Tom Ze had all but fallen off the musical map of Brazil. Ze was one of the founding fathers of Tropicalia – and unlike other members of that group, who rose to great fame during the 70s, and straighted up their act a bit, Ze always remained a committed modernist, as you'll hear on this sampling of 13 tracks from his rare releases on a number of labels. The style's incredibly hard to pin down – and in fact, we might describe the recordings as being "anti-style" – but if you've heard any of Ze's work, you know you're in for a treat. Titles include "Ma", "Doi", "Hein?", "Cademar", "Um Oh E Um Ah", and "A Felicidade". CD

✨✧ Tom ZeReturn Of Tom Ze – Hips Of Tradition – Brazil Classics 5 (green vinyl pressing) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1992. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
A great return for the legendary Tom Ze – an artist who'd been brought back to prominence via the efforts of a Luaka Bop compilation – then given this great chance to record for the label on his own! The set's a great return to form for Ze – who sprung from this moment into a renewed period of creative energy – really drawing on his crucial years of groundbreaking sounds in Brazil during the Tropicalia generation, and especially the 70s – when Tom had really moved off into a realm of his own. Most tracks are relatively short, and pretty enigmatic – a flurry of the sounds and verbal experiments that always made Ze so great! Titles include "Jingle Do Disco", "Cortina 3", "Amar", "Ogodo, Ano 2000", "Feira De Santana", "Fliperama", and "Tatuaramba". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ VariousBeleza Tropical – Brazil Classics Vol 1 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1989. Used ... Out Of Stock
Luaka Bop, 1998. Used ... Out Of Stock
Ouch! The title almost makes us want to pass this one up – and we certainly wish that Luaka Bop would soft-pedal their politics a bit more, because the music is more than enough to make the compilations sell. The set focuses on Cuban dance music of the 60s and 70s – and provides some valuable recordings that haven't been easily available in the states, all packaged with the usual care and attention to detail in the liner notes. Titles include "Papa Ogun" by Celeste Mendoza, "Eso No Es Na" by Maria Teresa Vera, "Caminito De Zaza" by El Jilguero De Cienfuegos, "Yayabo" by Orquesta Riverside, "Manzanillo" by Orquesa Original de Manzanillo, and "Fifi, Tete, Y Popo" by Orquesta Reve. ✨✧ VariousWorld Psychedelic Classics 3 – Love's A Real Thing – The Funky Fuzzy Sounds Of West Africa ... CD
Luaka Bop, Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds, and "Awon-Ojise-Oluwa" by Gasper Lawal. ✨✧ Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1970s. Near Mint- 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
A huge package of work that finally brings the rare Nigerian albums of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah to a much larger global audience – all beautifully brought together with a booklet that pays tribute to Oshomah, with contributions from his family – and sound quality that's a heck of a lot better than tracking down scratched-up original copies of the vinyl! The sound here is amazing – a really unique fusion of both the spiritual and funky currents running through Nigerian music at the time, graced with hypnotic percussion, rhythmic guitar riffs, and some very cool keyboard work at times – all topped with Alhaji's deeply soulful vocals. Imagine a deeper spirituality in the Fela generation, and you'll just get a start at understanding this music – then you'll have plenty to discover across the albums Oyoyo King, Godfather Of Afemai Music, Etsako Super Star, Mr Please Please Please, and Mr Dynamite. A huge crossover hit for the Talking Heads – music released in conjunction with the great film of the same name, but with a unified vibe that made the whole thing way more than just another soundtrack! Yet there's also some hints of the global elements that were always present in his music, and which would come more to the fore during the Luaka Bop years – used in more subtle ways here. William Onyeabor's looking pretty chilled out on the cover – especially given the Hypertension title of the record – a cool, confident dude decked out in a velvet jacket and sombrero – able to carry off that look as well as he can carry the grooves on the set! In anyone else's hands, this music might be somewhat cheesy – but Onyebor's a guy who can take lean keyboard lines, and weave them into a much deeper Afro Funk sound – drawing on all the best modes of the 70s, and avoiding the cliches of the 80s – and coming up with a very unique groove in the process. It helps that there's plenty of righteous spirit in his music and message – as you'll hear on titles that include "Hypertension", "Politicians", "The Moon & The Sun", and "Papa Na Mama".
