Doug Hream BluntMy Name Is Doug Hream Blunt ... LP
Luaka Bop, Late 80s. New Copy ... $18.99 19.98
The long-overdue formal presentation of the music of Doug Hream Blunt – a self-taught, self-styled San Francisco soul singer from the 80s – one who recorded a handful of tunes that never really saw the light of day! Doug's got an unusual style – almost more 70s soul in its earnest approach, especially the lyrics – but delivered with a lean style that certainly has some 80s elements – yet none of the heavy keyboards or more electronic modes you might expect. Instead, there's this almost earthy approach – a definite homegrown feel that makes the music really compelling, especially in Blunt's honesty through the lyrics, and unabashed way of putting the songs forward. The work lay undiscovered for years – until Doug brought some of his un-distributed albums into a San Francisco store, which eventually started the journey that led to this great reissue of his music by Luaka Bop! Titles include "Fly Guy", "Whiskey Man", "Ride The Tiger", "Loveland", "Big Top", "Gentle Persuasion", and "Caribbean Queen". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda (with bonus download) ... LP
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 28.98
An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". LP, Vinyl record album

Tim MaiaWorld Psychedelic Classics 4 – Nobody Can Live Forever – The Existential Soul Of Tim Maia ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy ... $14.99 15.98
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". William OnyeaborCrashes In Love (version 1) ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.99
A great early moment for the legendary William Onyeabor – music created for the film Crashes In Love – which tells the sad story of a princess who has to choose between love and money – a setting that helps make for some of Onyeabor's greatest music on record! The style here is maybe a bit more acoustic than in later years – strong use of horns over the keyboards, which almost creates more of a link back to a Fela Kuti mode – although the solos and main grooves here still come from William's keyboards, which are wonderfully sharp throughout! Lyrics are very positive, and presented in an hypnotic way – and titles include "Ride On Baby", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Crashes In Love", "Heaven & Hell", and "Jungle Gods". William OnyeaborGood Name ... LP
Wilfilms/Luaka Bop, 1983. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.99
Amazing sounds from William Onyeabor – space age keyboards mixed with electro funk mixed with Afro beat, snakey sax lines, and lots lots more – a really mind-bending album that's well-achieved legendary status over the years! Each song takes up a side of the record – but spins out in ways that are very different than Afro Funk work of a decade before – especially on the long jam "Let's Fall In Love", which feels as if some NYC breakdancers were plopped down in Lagos as invaders from space – and given the tools and power to reshape Nigerian culture completely to their own ends! "Good Name" has great electro appeal too – percolating beats, amazing keyboards, and this spacey blend of words and rhythms that's completely mindblowing! LP, Vinyl record album

William OnyeaborGreat Lover ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1981. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.99
William Onyeabor looks like a great lover on the cover of this set – and he follows up that image with some of the slinkiest, most seductive music of his career! There's almost a dub element to the record at times – as if Onyeabor was borrowing inspiration from Kingston, and bringing in some slight reggae rhythms – while still keeping the overall format in the mode of his usual classics – with long tracks, lots of keyboard elements, and a trance-like approach that really has William taking off in a style that's all his own. There's a love-oriented message on the cuts, too – one that's very positive – and titles include "Love Is Blind", "I've Got Love", "Tell Me What You Want", and "Great Lover". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ William OnyeaborHypertension ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $19.99 20.99
William Onyeabor's looking pretty chilled out on the cover – especially given the Hypertension title of the record – a cool, confident dude decked out in a velvet jacket and sombrero – able to carry off that look as well as he can carry the grooves on the set! In anyone else's hands, this music might be somewhat cheesy – but Onyebor's a guy who can take lean keyboard lines, and weave them into a much deeper Afro Funk sound – drawing on all the best modes of the 70s, and avoiding the cliches of the 80s – and coming up with a very unique groove in the process. It helps that there's plenty of righteous spirit in his music and message – as you'll hear on titles that include "Hypertension", "Politicians", "The Moon & The Sun", and "Papa Na Mama". William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 ... CD
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... $7.99
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". CD

PreachermanUniversal Philosophy – Preacherman Plays TJ Hustler's Greatest Hits ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2018. New Copy ... $4.99 14.99
Wild work from one of the more compelling artists of the Cali soul scene – an Oakland singer/keyboardist who issued a rare album under the name of TJ Hustler in 1979, then kept on making his own sounds away from the mainstream! The vibe here is very very 80s underground – lots of Casio-styled keyboards, used with spare drum programs – and topped with lyrics that are quite far from any mainstream understanding of soul – clearly marking Preacherman as his own sort of singer right from the start. The collection is a perfect fit for the Luaka Bop style of finding truly unique artists and giving them the spotlight they deserve – and titles include "Feel It", "Out Of This World", "Tell Me Why", "That's Good", "Age Of Individualism", and the 18 minute long "Up & Down". The lovely voice of Carol C graces most of the tracks, singing in a light and airy style that floats dreamily over the snapping percussion and gliding keys of most of the tunes. Moreno Veloso + 2 (Domenico/Kassin)Maquina De Escrever Musica (Music Typewriter) ... LP
Hannibal/Luaka Bop, 2001. New Copy Gatefold ... $19.99 20.99
An incredible album from Moreno Veloso – the son of the famous Caetano, but an artist who's already very much his own man on this classic collaboration with the team of Kassin and Domenico! Moreno plays it cool on most of the record – singing in a spare setting that mixes acoustic guitar and percussion with some occasional electronics, sounding best on the tracks that are the most stripped-down, because if he does share one thing with his father, it's a warmly intimate voice, one that will grab you right away! The electronics are all a bit ok, but it's the voice that sells this one – and it fortunately comes to the forefront on most of the record. Tracks include "Sertao", "Deusa Do Amor", "Esfinge", "Rio Longe", "Nenhuma", "I'm Wishing", "Das Partes", and "Para Xo". LP, Vinyl record album

Tom ZeBest Of Tom Ze – Brazil Classics 4 ... CD
Luaka Bop, 1970s/1980s/1990. Used ... $1.99
Although it's hard to understand from the perspective of over a decade (especially one that's seen Tom Ze rise to fame again), when this compilation was first put together, the music of Tom Ze had all but fallen off the musical map of Brazil. Ze was one of the founding fathers of Tropicalia – and unlike other members of that group, who rose to great fame during the 70s, and straighted up their act a bit, Ze always remained a committed modernist, as you'll hear on this sampling of 13 tracks from his rare releases on a number of labels. The style's incredibly hard to pin down – and in fact, we might describe the recordings as being "anti-style" – but if you've heard any of Ze's work, you know you're in for a treat. Titles include "Ma", "Doi", "Hein?", "Cademar", "Um Oh E Um Ah", and "A Felicidade". CD

Tom ZeCom Defeito De Fabrication ... CD
Luaka Bop/Trama (Brazil), 1998. Used ... $4.99
An album that marked a huge return to form for the legendary Tom Ze – brought back to all the power and creativity of his groundbreaking work of the 70s! The set was given huge global circulation by the folks at Luaka Bop – who were key in introducing most of the world to Tom's music – which although groundbreaking, barely made it outside of Brazil in the 70s – and every aspect of the record is done just the right way to showcase the mania that Ze always brought to his music. Some tracks are quite spare, and have the poetic structure of some of Tom's classics – while others have more of a tuneful approach, but with an offbeat vibe that really sets them apart from most Brazilian music of the period. The set marked a huge interest in Tom's music for a new generation – and for good reason too. Titles include "Dancar", "Juventude Javali", "Valsar", "Xiquexique", "Olho Do Lago", and "Politicar". CD

Luaka Bop, 1995. New Copy Gatefold (reissue)... $20.99 25.98
A great collection of tracks – and one of the first chances for most of us to hear the funkier side of sounds from Peru! The work isn't as full-on funky as Brazilian grooves from the time, but does share a very strong influence from American styles – and really goes way past any cliches of pan pipes you might have for Peruvian music – to a more complicated world of criss-crossing styles that echoes more creative moments from Columbia as well. Titles include "Lando" by Chabuca Granda, "Maria Lando" by Susana Baca, "Samba Malato" by Lucila Campos, "Prendeme La Vela" by Abelardo Vasquez, "Enciendete Candela" by Roberto Rivas, "No Me Cumben" by Nicomedes Santa Cruz, and more. Luaka Bop, 1970s. New Copy Gatefold ... $20.99 21.99
Maybe the coolest record ever put out by the Luaka Bop label – and that's really saying a lot, given all the amazing albums they've given us over the years! The set's a perfect musical tonic for the times – a set of underground singles from the 70s, most of which fall in a space between the secular and spiritual – message-oriented, but not entirely from the scriptures – with a humanist message of positivity that's completely timeless – as powerful now as it was when these gems were recorded! The source of most of these records is from a gospel perspective, but they work a lot more in the territory of righteous 70s soul – making the same sort of shift that The Staple Singers or Voices Of East Harlem did on a better-known scale. Titles include "Peace In The Land" by The Gospel IQs, "We Got A Race To Run" by Staples Jr Singers, "I'm Trying To Be Your Friend" by The Soul Stirrers, "Don't Give Up" by The William Singers, "Let Your Light Shine" by Willie Dale, "It's Hard To Live In This Old World" by Rev Harvey Gates, "Time For Peace" by The Little Shadows, "We Don't Love Enough" by The Triumphs, and a great reworking of Earth Wind & Fire in "Keep Your Faith To The Sky" by Willie Scott & The Birmingham Spirituals. Luaka Bop, 2021. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A fantastic record, and one of those cases where the presence of the mighty Pharoah Sanders can really transform the sound of a session! We'll admit that we weren't sure what to expect – but at the core, the record is really a set of duets between Pharoah on tenor and Sam Shepherd on keyboards – a great range that includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, celeste, and acoustic piano – slowly graced by some larger arrangements from the LSO! Yet even with the majesty of the larger group, who come into the proceedings in baby steps, there's a core feeling of intimacy that never goes away – sublimely spiritual sounds from Pharoah on tenor throughout – with phrasing and styles that show us that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since his early years on Impulse records. The album's maybe one of the most beautiful things that Sanders has given us in a long time – and that's saying a lot, as he's always pretty great – and the set features the long "Promises" suite, in nine movements – a piece for saxophone, strings, keyboards, and electronics composed by Shepherd. A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. An incredible legacy in music! For years, the music of William Onyeabar has been the stuff of legend, but only accessible to a few who could get their hands on scarce original pressings – but that lack has really been corrected by Luaka Bop's revival of Onyeabar's magical music, complete with all the original artwork! William's got a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a weird mix of African rhythms and contemporary 70s keyboards – served up in a hypnotic blend of boogie and underground club styles borrowed from the US, but delivered with an earthy, very personal quality – a sound that's gotten Onyeabar plenty of attention over the years. And while Luaka Bop did a wonderful job on collecting together some of his best tracks for their Who Is William Onyeabor compilation, each record is really something special, and every long track has its own sort of magnetic attraction for the listener! Includes "Beautiful Baby", "Atomic Bomb", "Shame", "I Need You All Life" and "Batter Change Your Mind". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ David ByrneLead Us Not Into Temptation ... CD
Thrill Jockey, 2003. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A pretty interesting set of tunes from David Byrne – way different than anything he's recorded for Luaka Bop in the last several years! Lead Us Not To Temptation is essentially the soundtrack to a movie starring Ewan MacGregor and Tilda Swinton, but it plays really well as a stand-alone, largely instrumental mood rock album. It's a very mellow, very moody affair with lots of bottom end strings and a loose, languorous feel throughout. Byrne recorded the album in Glasgow with a number of notable indie vets from groups like Belle & Sebastian, the Delgados, and in particular Mogwai. 15 tracks including "Body In A River", "Mneumonic Discordance", "Seaside Smokes", "Canal Life", "Locks & Barges", "Inexorable", "Speechless", "The Great Western Road" and others. ✨✧ Number One De DakarDakar Sound Vol 6 – No 1 De No 1 ... CD
Dakar Sound (Netherlands), 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Crucial recordings from one of Senegal's best! Number One De Dakar split off from the great Star Band in the mid-70s and perfected one of the country's most soulful and propulsive sounds, presaging the rise of mbalax. Fronted by the great singer and tenor saxophonist Pape Seck and featuring the scorching electric guitar of Yahya Fall, this killer band took Afro-Cuban rhythms in new directions, ratcheting up the volume and intensity. By and large, the vocals ditch the salsa phrasing and language – although the great "Guajira Ven", which turned up on Luaka Bop's Love's A Real Thing compilation, retains some of that approach – for traditional Wolof melodies, and Fall's effects-heavy guitar brought the textural palette of Hendrix to relentless polyrhythmic throwdowns, continually stoked by punchy brass charts and explosive outbursts on the tama, the local variant of the talking drum. Tracks include "Medoune Xule", "Yaye Boye", "Faran Tamba", "Yangaake", and "Walo". CD
