Pastor ChampionI Just Want To Be A Good Man ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2022. New Copy ... $6.99 14.99
Pastor Wiley Champion is a gospel singer with a hell of a voice – the sort that could have instantly made him a huge soul singer, if he ever chose to leave his faith – but which is maybe even more powerful here directed towards a spiritual sort of setting! The album's a very lean effort, especially for a contemporary album – recorded to two track analog tape in a church in Oakland, but with crisp fidelity that lets the vocals really come to life once the songs begin – as Champion sings with light backings from his own guitar, plus a bit of keyboard, bass, drums, and tenor. The whole thing is wonderfully without any sense of cliche – and has none of the slavish attempt to sound "authentic" that you might fear from a contemporary record like this – just the pure, unadulterated power of a singer who's worked in obscurity for decades, finally getting his due. Titles include "To Be Used By You", "Storm Of Life", "I Know That You've Been Wounded", "He'll Make A Way", "I Just Want To Be A Good Man", and "Who Do Men Say I Am". CD

Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders, & The London Symphony OrchestraPromises ... CD
Luaka Bop, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
A fantastic record, and one of those cases where the presence of the mighty Pharoah Sanders can really transform the sound of a session! We'll admit that we weren't sure what to expect – but at the core, the record is really a set of duets between Pharoah on tenor and Sam Shepherd on keyboards – a great range that includes Fender Rhodes, Hammond B3, celeste, and acoustic piano – slowly graced by some larger arrangements from the LSO! Yet even with the majesty of the larger group, who come into the proceedings in baby steps, there's a core feeling of intimacy that never goes away – sublimely spiritual sounds from Pharoah on tenor throughout – with phrasing and styles that show us that he hasn't lost an ounce of his talent since his early years on Impulse records. The album's maybe one of the most beautiful things that Sanders has given us in a long time – and that's saying a lot, as he's always pretty great – and the set features the long "Promises" suite, in nine movements – a piece for saxophone, strings, keyboards, and electronics composed by Shepherd. Os MutantesEverything Is Possible! – The Best Of Os Mutantes ... CD
Luaka Bop, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
An essential introduction to the work of this legendary group – an important American issue of some of their best material – all of which never came out in our market back in the day! If you don't know Os Mutantes, prepare to be blown away – as they were a key part of the Tropicalia movement, alongside bigger names Caetano Veloso, Gal Costa, and Gilberto Gil – creating music that was years ahead of its time, but which has gone on to become legendary over the years! There's so many different elements going on here, it's impossible to pin down – avant and psychedelic modes, Brazilian styles and postmodern ones, all put together with sublime production that's also way ahead of the pack! This Luaka Bop presentation was put together by David Byrne – and it features a total of 14 cuts in all – including an English and Portuguese reading of the famous "Baby", plus the tunes "Ave Lucifer", "Desculpe, Babe", "Adeus Maria Fulo", "Panis Et Circensis", "Bat Macumba", "Dia 36", and "Fuga No II". Alhaji Waziri OshomahAlhaji Waziri Oshomah Vol 1 ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1978. New Copy ... $21.99 22.99
A record with a groove that's hard to deny – yet one that's also maybe nicely understated, in comparison to some of the late 70s contemporaries of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah on the West African scene! The music's got this seductive quality that ebbs and flows with the groove – not full-on Afro Funk, but this organic building of energy between bubbling basslines, earthy percussion, and these sweet guitar lines that hold the whole thing together – while Waziri's vocals make these very personal exclamations that are sometimes echoed by the rest of the group – and by horn parts as well. The set features four long tracks – "Igwegi Baba", "Iyuchele Opomumhe", "Forgive Them O God Amin", and "Emoi Khakiegwi Aghumheile". LP, Vinyl record album

Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 5CD ... $46.99 49.99
A huge package of work that finally brings the rare Nigerian albums of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah to a much larger global audience – all beautifully brought together with a booklet that pays tribute to Oshomah, with contributions from his family – and sound quality that's a heck of a lot better than tracking down scratched-up original copies of the vinyl! The sound here is amazing – a really unique fusion of both the spiritual and funky currents running through Nigerian music at the time, graced with hypnotic percussion, rhythmic guitar riffs, and some very cool keyboard work at times – all topped with Alhaji's deeply soulful vocals. Imagine a deeper spirituality in the Fela generation, and you'll just get a start at understanding this music – then you'll have plenty to discover across the albums Oyoyo King, Godfather Of Afemai Music, Etsako Super Star, Mr Please Please Please, and Mr Dynamite. Alhaji Waziri OshomahAlhaji Waziri Oshomah Vol 2 ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
A record with songs titles that maybe read more like the credits of officers of a business – but one with a sound that's wonderfully personal, and which really marks a strong step forward since the first album from Alhaji Waziri Oshomah! The set begins with "Alaji Yesufu Sado Managing Director Alh Y Sado & Son LTD" – a side-long cut that has this sense of flowing beauty that you'd never expect from its name – slowly loping grooves delivered by interwoven guitar and basslines – peppered by these singsong vocal refrains that are completely sublime, and mixed with more great organ work too! The organ returns on "Chief J Aigobkhaode Electrical Contractor" – a tune that has this subtle sense of poetry as it moves in this building groove that takes it past the ten minute mark – skittish guitar gently nudging the organ forward, while beautifully expressive vocals take hold once things get going. And last up is "Ikwekiame Nedumhe" – a tune that has a chunkier approach to the groove at the start, but which soon fits into the same wonderful flow as the entire album – making for a very unified set throughout! Shanu Olu/Luaka Bop, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... $21.99 22.99
The music of Alhaji Waziri Oshomah just seems to get better as each new record moves on – stepping forth with a sense of cohesion and musical vision that's really wonderful! This excellent set features four long tracks that each have similar building blocks of percussion, guitar, organ, and tenor saxophone – and there's a sense of structure that binds each tune together, yet also gives them all a different flavor – these minimalist masterpieces that start slow, build things up, and open the gateway for the vocals – yet all with a much more stripped-down style than Nigerian work of a few years before! The whole thing makes for a completely compelling, highly hypnotic set – with titles that include "Oshiomegie Idonigie", "Eyemaya Erayemare", "I Forget Not Mother", and "Omhona Omhona". Wonderfully intertwining lines of sound from the great Alhaji Waziri Oshomah – percolating percussion, bubbling basslines, sparkling guitar parts, and little touches of horns – all working almost at an organic level of groove, with a quality that's a lot more understated than work from some of his contemporaries! The vocals follow with an equally nice spirit – almost conversational, as if Alhaji is talking back and forth with the group as they build up the tunes – all long grooves, but never at a level that feels forced at all – on titles that include "Chief Mike Odidi", "Iyere Mecca London", "Imirunolu Agizoane", "Hungry Man Osamiogbewa", and "Chief Jo Omo Agba". There's a slight shift here from previous records from the great Alhaji Waziri Oshomah – some very slight use of drum machine elements in some of the rhythms, but never in a way that makes the tunes sound tinny at all – as the Alhaji and the rest of the group provide all their wonderful instrumentation over the top to warm things up – a cascading array of guitar parts, basslines, and other bits that all hold up to the fantastic legacy of his previous records! The production is great – warm enough to hold everything together – and as on previous records, all tracks are nice and long, with titles that include "Chief Danesi Aidoviogie", "Wegieme Khayeya", "Amie Khagieguegbe", and "Ame Ogiegie Udo Ogiegie". A great return for the legendary Tom Ze – an artist who'd been brought back to prominence via the efforts of a Luaka Bop compilation – then given this great chance to record for the label on his own! The set's a great return to form for Ze – who sprung from this moment into a renewed period of creative energy – really drawing on his crucial years of groundbreaking sounds in Brazil during the Tropicalia generation, and especially the 70s – when Tom had really moved off into a realm of his own. Most tracks are relatively short, and pretty enigmatic – a flurry of the sounds and verbal experiments that always made Ze so great! Luaka Bop, Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $26.99 27.98
A really mind-bending collection of African grooves – one that digs deep into the West African scene of the early 70s – and comes up with a massive batch of tunes that really opens up our understanding of the music! The sound here isn't just 70s Afro Funk – as the tunes include a range of tripped-out styles that make the best use of electric instrumentation, psychedelic production, and important influences from American soul artists at the time. There's some amazing guitar on some of the best tracks – ringing out with a sound that's chromatically complex while also being tripped-out and funky – in a way that complicates the rhythms without totally taking them apart. If you've dug the tunes on previous sets like Africa Funk or Ghana Soundz, this is one to take that sound to the next level – and really open up your ears! Luaka Bop, 1970s. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Insanely great sounds from the legendary Tim Maia – easily the most soulful singer in 70s Brazil, and an artist with a heck of a strong ear for funk, too! The music here is an incredible hybrid of American soul and Brazilian elements – especially since some lyrics are in English – and the grooves are often mixed together in a sound that's nice and fuzzy around the edges, with some slight psychedelic elements that makes the cuts a perfect fit for this Luaka Bop series! Yet Tim Maia's hardly a guy who can easily fit into any easy slot or series – because as you'll hear on this set, he's got a vibe that's all his own – a really wonderful approach that's different even from some of his hippest contemporaries in Brazil – and which has gone onto have influence on countless other generations of singers and musicians – including his nephew Ed Motta. The package is great – a real visual tribute to the sounds within – and titles include "Que Beleza", "Ela Partiu", "Do Leme Ao Pontal", "Brother Father Mother Sister", "Quer Queira Quer Nao Queira", "Let's Have A Ball Tonight", "I Don't Care", "The Dance Is Over", "Rational Culture", "You Don't Know What I Know", and "Nobody Can Live Forever". Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy 3 LPs Gatefold ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Grooves unlike anything else you've ever heard before – the rightly legendary musical legacy of William Onyeabor, one of the most enigmatic talents to come from the African scene of the 70s! The work here is all plenty darn funky, but it's also very different from familiar Afro Funk too – as the instrumentation is heavy on keyboards, handled by William with incredible dexterity – and spun out in these soaring lines that bristle with righteous touches that really support the message of his tunes! The vibe mixes in some electro elements with long-drawn rhythms – and the vocals often step aside for lots of keyboard and rhythm interplay, then come in to send things home at just the right moment. Onyeabor's been a pretty elusive cat over the years, and it's taken Luaka Bop quite some time to put this collection together – amazing work that may well make the album one of the most important to ever come from the label – and the first introduction to the non-African world of Onyeabor's incredible sounds. Titles include "Body & Soul", "Atomic Bomb", "Something You'll Never Forget", "Why Go To War", "Love Is Blind", "Fantastic Man", and "Let's Fall In Love". 3LP set features four bonus tracks not on the CD! A groundbreaking collection of work from the legendary Tom Ze – and a record that really helped introduce his genius to the world outside of Brazil! Although it's hard to understand from the perspective of over a decade – especially one that's seen Tom Ze rise to fame again – when this compilation was first put together, the music of Tom Ze had all but fallen off the musical map of Brazil. Ze was one of the founding fathers of Tropicalia – and unlike other members of that group, who rose to great fame during the 70s, and straightened up their act a bit – Ze always remained a committed modernist, continually inventive well into the 70s and 80s – really coming up with amazing sounds that are always compelling, challenging, and often have a nicely quirky feel as well. The style's incredibly hard to pin down – and in fact, we might describe the recordings as being "anti-style" – but if you've heard any of Ze's work, you know you're in for a treat. The collection brings together material from a number of different labels – and titles include "Ma", "Doi", "Hein?", "Cademar", "Um Oh E Um Ah", "Augusta Angelica E Consolacao", "O Riso E A Faca", "Ui", and "A Felicidade". An incredible side of the talents of the legendary Alice Coltrane – obscure 80s material that was recorded in the years after her famous records on Impulse and Warner Brothers – only ever issued on cassette at the time! The tracks have Alice still very much in the same spiritual territory as before – but also mixing in some elements from American gospel music – not in any sort of Christian way, but just in terms of the use of a larger choir on some of the tracks, whose stompingly rhythmic presence can really drive a few of the tunes! Other tracks are more spare, and really focus on Coltrane's vocals and work on organ – as well as a bit of harp and string backings too – all at a level that really pushes the transcendental modes she first brought to light in the 70s. Given that most of us never got our hands on the original tapes, the whole thing is a real treasure trove – and presented with nicely detailed notes, too. An incredible legacy in music! For years, the music of William Onyeabar has been the stuff of legend, but only accessible to a few who could get their hands on scarce original pressings – but that lack has really been corrected by Luaka Bop's revival of Onyeabar's magical music, complete with all the original artwork! William's got a sound that's unlike anyone else we can think of – a weird mix of African rhythms and contemporary 70s keyboards – served up in a hypnotic blend of boogie and underground club styles borrowed from the US, but delivered with an earthy, very personal quality – a sound that's gotten Onyeabar plenty of attention over the years. And while Luaka Bop did a wonderful job on collecting together some of his best tracks for their Who Is William Onyeabor compilation, each record is really something special, and every long track has its own sort of magnetic attraction for the listener! Epic/Luaka Bop, 1974. Used ... Out Of Stock
An insanely wonderful album! Shuggie Otis is the son of Johnny Otis – the LA R&B maestro who was moving heavily into funk at the end of the 60s – and he has this tripped out, super-dope guitar style that he played to strong effect on Johnny's albums of the late 60s and early 70s, and on his first two solo albums, which were kind of bluesy in tone. For this album, though, he shocked the world by moving into a stripped-down mode that pairs his guitar with spare drum machine rhythms, flanged-out deeply soulful vocals, and one of the most laidback conceptions of funk you'll ever hear. The album's a landmark – one of those gems that's unlike anything else you can think of, but which will redefine your concept of what you want in a record for years to come. Every track's a winner – and the whole thing's a perfectly unified batch of tunes that includes instant classics like "Inspiration Information", "Island Letter", "Aht Uh Mi Hed", "XL 30", and "Rainy Day". Plus, this reissue features 4 tracks from Shuggie's Freedom Flight LP – including his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23", and "Sweet Thang", "Freedom Flight", and "Ice Cold Daydream". CD

✨✧ Staples Jr SingersWhen Do We Get Paid ... LP
Brenda/Luaka Bop, 1975. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A lost gospel treasure from this obscure Mississippi group – cut in the mid 70s, but with a stripped-down sound that's completely timeless overall! The Staples Jr Singers certainly have picked up some of the more righteous currents of mainstream soul and funk at the time – echoed both in their tremendous phrasing on the lyrics, and on some of the album's used of raw guitar licks next to their words – but the stripped-down vibe gives the record a feel that's almost more 60s deep soul overall – as befits their southern roots, and the album's issue on a small indie label! There's also maybe a bit less "church" on the record than the usual gospel outing of the time – more overall messages about love, unity, and feeling – which also gives the whole thing a very transcendent quality. Titles include "On My Journey Home", "When Do We Get Paid", "I'm Looking For A Man", "I Know You're Going To Miss Me", "Trouble Of The World", "I Got A New Home", and "I Feel Good". The set's the greatest work to date from Marie Daulne – a funky batch of tunes that's overflowing with catchy numbers, and which is going for a universal soul approach that's sure to open up ears around the planet! Afro rhythms mix with modern beats – but in a way that's really fresh, and never cliched – all centered around the wonderful vocals of Daulne, who makes some incredible sounds with her voice! ✨✧ Panduranga HendersonOcean Of Love ... LP
Luaka Bop, Early 80s. Sealed ... Out Of Stock
Incredibly unique work from Panduranga Henderson – an artist who first worked as John Henderson in the group of Ray Charles, then hooked up with Alice Coltrane and had a spiritual awakening that really shaped his sound! The music here isn't at all like Charles or Coltrane – although it's informed by the same spirit as the latter – as Panduranga draws on lots of elements from Eastern thought to create the lyrics of these long songs of praise – tunes that often have currents of electro soul in the instrumentation, but which flow out in ways that have the longer-form quality you'd find in Indian vocal music. The mix is completely unique – and is surprisingly powerful, despite a relatively simple production approach. Titles include "Hari Namaste", "Hari Haraya", "Rama Tama Sri Bhagwan", and "Om Namah Shivaya". LP, Vinyl record album

A stunning Luaka Bop start for Kings Go Forth – a group who've really expanded their sound from the days of their first few indie singles! ✨✧ William OnyeaborBody & Soul ... LP
Luaka Bop, 1980. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest records ever from this legendary Nigerian musician – a set that's filled with sharply funky moments, soulful saxophone solos, and lots of those cool keyboards we always love from William Onyeabor! The style here is a bit like the first Crashes In Love record – tied a bit more towards older Nigerian funk in his use of horns, but also still very Onyeabor-like in the spacey electronics that trip out over the heavier grooves – which makes for some nice moogy solos at times! William's vocals are great – trading back and forth with a group of female singers – and titles include "Body & Soul", "I Believe In God", "The Way To Win Your Love", and "Poor Boy". ✨✧ William OnyeaborWho Is William Onyeabor – World Psychedelic Classics 5 ... CD
Luaka Bop, Late 70s/Early 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
CD

Luaka Bop, Late 60s/Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
The glorious return of Os Mutantes – a recent live performance that marks the group's first new album in many many years! The show was recorded before a very enthusiastic audience in London – at a time when the city was in the throes of a recent new wave of interest in Tropicalia – clearly the inspiration for the group's performance here, which is heavy on work from their best years! The lineup features Zelia Duncan in place of Rita Lee on vocals – alongside founders Arnaldo Baptista and Sergio Dias – and the overall sound is pretty great, with some very focused and full-on guitar work throughout. Titles include "Don Quixote", "Ave Gengis Khan", "Tecnicolor", "Virgina", "Cantor De Mambo", "Baby", "El Justiciero", "Balada Do Louco", and "Ave Lucifer". CD

The Nigerian scene has given us plenty of music over the decades – and while the scene in the 70s was best known for heavy funk and crossover club, it also really resonated strongly with some new spiritual currents as well! One of the shining stars of that moment was Alhaji Waziri Oshomah – a singer who managed to weave together contemporary rhythms and deliver a timeless message – so much so that the vintage tracks here still have a tremendous amount of power, and themes that still resonate strongly in the 21st Century! Instrumentation is heavy on rhythms, riffing guitars, and keyboards – and the vocals of Oshomah ring out strongly with a rough-edged power that really brings the whole thing down to earth. The whole thing is maybe the most powerful set that Luaka Bop has given us in years – and titles include "Jealousy", "Omhona", "Alhaji Yesufu Sado Managing Director", "My Luck", "Forgive Them Oh God", and "Ovini Omoekeke Ahalji Inu Umoru". The first-ever record in the Luaka Bop legacy – a massive collection of Brazilian grooves that still serves as one of the best introductions to the music we can think of! Most of the artists here are the bigger names of the MPB generation of the 70s – but many are still very under-represented in the US market – which makes the collection of work here completely essential. The styles range from samba soul of Jorge Ben to the lyrical poetry of Caetano Veloso to the soulful drama of Milton Nascimento – and titles include "Ponta De Lanca Africano" and "Fio Varavilha" by Jorge Ben, "Cacada" by Chico Buarque, "Quilombo O El Dorado Negro" and "So Quero Um Xodo" by Gilberto Gil, "Quiexa" and "O Leaozinho" by Caetano Veloso, "Sonho Meu" by Maria Bethania & Gal Costa, "Caixa De Sol" by Nazare Pereira, and "Anima" by Milton Nascimento. Luaka Bop/V2 (UK), Early 70s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Keleya" by Moussa Doumbia, "Love's A Real Thing" by The Super Eagles, "Minsato Le Mi Dyihome" by Orchestre Poly-Rhythmo De Cotonou Dahomey, "Porry" by Sorry Bamba, "Allah Wakbarr" by Ofo & The Black Company, "Sanjina" by Orchestre Regional De Kayes, "Ifa" by Tunji Oyelana & The Benders, "Zinabu" by Bunzu Sounds, and "Awon-Ojise-Oluwa" by Gasper Lawal. ✨✧ Alice ColtraneWorld Spirituality Classics Vol 1 – The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda ... CD
Luaka Bop, Mid 80s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Titles include "Er Ra", "Om Shanti", "Om Rama", "Rama Guru", "Haria Naryan", "Krishna Japaye", "Rama Katha", "Keshava Murahara", and "Journey To Satchindananda". CD

The best album so far from this up-and-coming Colombian group – a great mix of rootsy elements and more electronic production – served up in the forward-reaching style we've come to love in recent projects from the Soundway label! Bomba Estereo are easily one of the most contemporary groups to hit the imprint of late – and they've got no trouble at all moving between upbeat, soulful styles and more earthy levels of instrumentation – all fused together with the kind of warmth and joy we might expect in some of the older productions from Luaka Bop, but with a bit more edge too.
