Jimmy LeeLovely Day ... CD
Society Hill, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
A tribute to 70s soul, as you might guess from the Bill Withers title – served up here by Philly vocalist Jimmy Lee, with help from Society Hill producer/arranger Butch Ingram, and instrumentation from the whole Ingram Family! The style's got lots of contemporary elements in the mix – a fair bit of keyboards and rhythm programs, instead of fuller orchestrations – and Jimmy's vocal approach has a bit more of a rough edge than you might be used to hearing on these tracks – but in a way that makes for some nicely different versions of the songs. Titles include "Lovely Day", "I Think I'll Tell Her", "Hold Back The Night", "Pride & Joy", "Maybe Tomorrow", "Zoom", "Just Don't Want To Be Lonely", and "Look Me Up". CD

Numero, Late 60s. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Rare late 60s psychedelia from blue collar Rockford, Il – a totally great lost album of pop psych tunefulness from Pisces – who had an incredible knack for experimental sounds that weave in and out of the hallucinatory pop structure! The group centered around core players Jim Krein and Paul DiVenti, and a number of the tunes have fragile, beautiful lead vocals by Linda Bruner, bringing in a bit of Velvets style stark, haunting loveliness – and most of the tracks languished unreleased all this time! This is essentially the first real release of almost all of the tunes, and the best shot at finding an adventurous audience any of it has ever had! We think this stuff would have been hugely influential had it found an audience in its time, hell, it sounds to us like it actually did influence countless groups, even though that's hardly even possible! There's a tunefulness at the center that bears the fruits of the experimental pop sounds that came from benchmark scenes of the era, from Haight Ashbury to Abbey Road – but the found sound ephemera, tape manipulations, and tripped out atmospherics really bring in some far out vibes! An essential discovery from Numero that's as exciting, insistently groovy and eclectic as any of the rock oriented stuff they've dug up to date! Titles include "Dear One", "Children Kiss Your Mother Goodnight", "Motley Mary Ann", "Say Goodbye To John", "The Music Box", "Like A Hole In The Wall Where The Rat Lives", "Elephant Eyes", "Circle Of Time" and more – plus the "extended play" bonus tracks "A Flower For All Seasons" and "In The Summer A Grape Grows". Cherry Red (UK), Late 80s/Early 90s. New Copy 5CD ... $32.99
The complete run of music by The Primitives – their early singles, ful albums, and lots of bonus material – plus BBC sessions too! CD1 features The Lazy Years – early work from The Primitives – a selection of tracks from early singles they recorded for the Lazy label, before moving onto even bigger fame at a major label! We've always liked this work by the group the best – as it's nice and raw, with a good mix of muddy production, guitar fuzz, and darkly echoey vocals – very much a product of the same Creation Records influences that gave the world Jesus & Mary Chain. Titles include "She Don't Need You", "Thru The Flowers", "Where The Wind Blows", "Stop Killing Me", "Buzz Buzz Buzz", "Everything's Shining Bright", "Shadow", "Across My Shoulder", and "She Don't Need You". CDs 2, 3, and 4 feature the full albums Lovely, Pure, and Galore – all with lots of bonus tracks – and CD5 features 26 more tracks from BBC sessions recorded during the early Lazy Years, 1986 and 1987. Box set features a massive 118 tracks in all, a few previously unreleased! CD

✨✧ Jon HassellVernal Equinox ... CD
Lovely/Ndeya, 1977. New Copy ... $13.99 14.99
To most ears, trumpeter Jon Hassell first burst on to the world through his experiments with Brian Eno on EG Records, or maybe his 80s work on ECM – but here, on his debut for the small avant label Lovely Music, it's clear that Jon's already in complete control of his sound – and is ready to become the kind of performer that would captivate listeners for decades to come! Hassell's horn has that special sort of effect quality on most numbers here – spacey, but never slick – and electrified, but far from any sort of Miles Davis mode – especially considering that the music is full of earthy, organic percussion from Nana Vasconcelos and some other players, who balance out the set's work on Fender Rhodes, Arp, and Serge synthesizer. The spirit of the set is very much in Hassell's classic "fourth world" recordings – and titles include "Toucan Ocean", "Hex", "Blues Nile", "Vernal Equinox", and "Caracas Night September 11, 1975". Meredith MonkKey ... LP
Lovely, 1971. Very Good+ ... $49.99
Haunting early work by Meredith Monk – recorded in 1971, and performed by a small group of vocalists – all working with Monk in an incredible presentation of her new ideas for voice! The music is already at a place that's light years ahead of most – clearly marking the singer as one of the most visionary artists of her generation – as important as Philip Glass or Steve Reich – even though the more personal presentation of Monk's music never got her into the concert hall repertoire as much as her contemporaries. Meredith plays electric organ, jews harp, and sings – and the piece is one long work that covers the entire album. LP, Vinyl record album

Enrique RodriguezLo Que Es (red vinyl pressing) ... LP
Extra Lovely, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99 20.00
A really beautiful record by young Chilean pianist Enrique Rodriguez – a set that's got little more going on than piano and keyboards, but which really makes the most of those elements! Rodriguez plays in a style that's not entirely jazz – maybe more moody instrumentals with a slight bit of rhythm in the background, but always at a gentle pace – so that the tunes have a flow that's really driven by the keys, which sound equally great, whether acoustic or electric! Some tunes glow with a soundtrack theme style, others have a deeper soul vibe – and titles include "Chao", "Estamos Bien Aqui", "Una Pared", "Mantener El Arriba", "Ambos", "Lograr Decidirnos", "Lo Que Somos", and "Ni Siquiera Se Si Quiero Encontrarte". ✨✧ Robert AshleyPrivate Parts ... LP
Lovely, 1977. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the most important records from composer Robert Ashley – and one that's got a compact approach that helped it circulate a lot more than some of Ashley's larger operas! This piece is very much like those – with Ashley's unique spoken approach – part poetry, part performance art – but the sound is more stripped-down, and in the spirit of the young downtown New York generation of Laurie Anderson and Phillip Glass – served up with great instrumental help from contemporary Blue Gene Tyranny, who plays piano, moog, and clavinet – with some additional tablas for accompaniment! The whole thing was recorded at the important Center For Contemporary Music on the west coast, at Mills College – and is almost a Bay Area answer to some of the more compelling art records from the New York scene. The record is divided into 2 parts – "The Park" and "The Backyard" – both filled with a hypnotic mix of voice, keyboards, and tablas! LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Blue Gene TyrannyOut Of The Blue ... CD
Lovely/Unseen Worlds, 1977. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A compelling first album from avant composer Blue Gene Tyranny – one of the first efforts from the excellent art label Lovely Music, and a wonderful example of the left-field experimentation going on away from the punk and more familiar scenes of the time! The first half of the record is an attempt to open up more conventional pop – but from our later perspective, the results sound a bit more like more creative work of the mainstream – although definitely with a more offbeat feel, particularly on the one instrumental jamming number. But the real standout here is the side-long track "A Letter From Home" – done for a narrator and "sampling chorus" – a really cool piece that sets the scene for Laurie Anderson, Giorno Poetry Systems, and all the other great art records that we remember so fondly from the 80s! This piece alone is worth the price of the record – but you also get the shorter cuts "For David K", "Leading A Double Life", and "Next Time Might Be Your Time". CD

A lovely title, and a lovely little record too – every bit as poetic as its promise – with haunting trumpet lines by Ambrose Akimusire, nestled nicely in an acoustic quintet that also features Gerald Clayton on piano and Walter Smith III on tenor! There's an understated quality to the record that's really nice – none of the too-modern modes you might guess from the cover image (we'll admit that sometimes we're suspicious of contemporary Blue Note mixing it up too much) – and instead a style that's mighty fresh, yet still pretty earthy – modern, yet never too outside – and a sense of soul that informs proceedings and really helps keep things on track. Titles include "Jaya", "Henya", "Far But Few Between", "Confessions To My Unborn Daughter", "The Walls Of Lechuguilla", and "My Name Is Oscar". CD

Ars NovaFields Of People – The Elektra & Atlantic Recordings 1968/1969 (Ars Nova/Sunshine & Shadows) ... CD
Esoteric (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
A pair of great albums from the overlooked Ars Nova – back to back in a single set! First up is the 1968 self-titled Ars Nova – a wonderful little set of post-folk rock – with lots of lovely baroque touches! Ars Nova were really short-lived group – known for only two rare records – but they've got a sound that perfectly sums up a generation! There's a wonderful LA late 60s sound here – somewhere between Love and The Byrds, with the baroque touches of the former and the best country influences of the latter – all wrapped up in earnest, honest songwriting that makes even the ambitious moments come across with surprising charm. A true lost relic, and the kind of record that should be in any late 60s cannon! Titles include "Album In Your Mind", "Pavan For My Lady", "General Clover Ends A War", "And How Am I To Know", "Fields Of People", "Automatic Love", and "Song To The City". Sunshine & Shadows is the second tripped-out set from Ars Nova – an under-remembered late 60s group who had a great talent for blending together a range of different styles! At some level, Ars Nova share qualities with some of the harder-jamming groups of their time – but they've also got a sound that expands to bring in folk, blues, jazz, and more baroque elements – played by the group with a lineup that includes some nice work on trumpet by Jimmy Owens, who at this point was a core member of the combo. Brooks Arthur handled the overall music direction, with a quality that recalls some of his work on Verve – and the album features the wonderful bossa-styled groover "Walk On The Sand", a romping soul jazz take on Jimmy Owens' "You Had Better Listen", and the cuts "Rubbish", "Please Don't Go Now", "Temporary Serenade", "She Promises Everything", and "Round Once Again". A very cool compilation of tracks, seemingly recorded in the early 70s – but issued here in package designed to pay tribute to the 33-year history of the legendary Saravah label! Pierre Barouh, the founder of Saravah, is at the head of the party-like festivities, reciting his "Saravah Blues En 72". Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos performs quite a bit on a number of tracks, and other tracks feature performances by the group Mahjun and Jean-Roger Caussimon. The highlight is a lovely group vocal reading of Chico Buarque's "La Nuit Des Masques", with new French lyrics by Barouh, and nice percussion by Nana! Epic, 1987. Very Good+ ... $4.99
Seminal work from the lovely Basia – and an album that's a wonderful hybrid of jazz, soul, and pop – all put together at a level that really goes beyond most of her contemporaries! There's a vibe here that's almost like Swing Out Sister at their best – catchy, but never cloying – and done in an 80s style that refers strongly back to 60s and 70s styles, yet still keeps things quite contemporary overall. And although most of the tunes are pretty poppy, they're also pretty great, and really hold up over the years – thanks to slight undercurrents of jazzy instrumentation, of the sort you'd get from Brit artists like Working Week or Sade. Titles include "Promises", "From Now On", "Freeze Thaw", "How Dare You", "Astrud", and "Miles Away". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Rhian BensonGold Coast ... CD
DKG Music, 2003. Used ... $5.99
A sparking, richly spiritual jazz-influenced neo soul album from Rhian Benson – a Ghana born, London learned singer, with a style that has roots in some of the best deep soul and jazz styles of the past few decades! What really pushes Gold Coast over as such a strong debut is the way it balances a prevalent affinity for the best attributes of artists like Fela (very smooth Afrobeat horns and percussion influences), 70s Miles Davis and Ramsey Lewis (the soaring, but still earthy spiritual vibe) with the much crisper and more easily approachable hooks and melodies of the neo soul movement of the last decade. Rhian's vocals have a very lovely and natural way of never over extending with the note warbling histrionics (which plagues a few of her neo soul peers.) She comes off somewhere between Nina Simone and Sade – with a rich, expressively beautiful voice, but often rolling in sweet, kind of hushed tones for the best kind of natural feel. Nice! 14 tracks including "Words Hurt Too", "Say How I Feel", "Stealing My Peace Of Mind", "Soul Boy", "Shake It Away", "A Moment In Shine", "Gold Sky", "Young Girl" and more. CD

A great live date in the excellent Smalls series – and a wonderful group outing not just for pianist David Berkman, but for trumpeter Tom Harrell as well! Tom gets a lot of room to really open up and solo beautifully on the record – in ways that are quite different than his own studio work in recent years, and which really take us back to the qualities in Harrell's music we first fell in love with years ago! Berkman's got an inventive touch on the piano – sometimes angular but tight, sometimes more spacious – and the group also features Ed Howard on bass and Jonathan Blake on drums. All tracks are nice and long, and the Berkman originals are especially great for both his piano and Harrell's trumpet – titles that include "Ghost Wife", "Small Wooden Housekeeper", and "For Kenny" – nestled alongside versions of "Body & Soul" and "Sweet & Lovely". Marlin/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1977. New Copy ... $22.99
Disco grooves, but with a definite difference – given that Jo Bisso had previously worked on the Parisian club scene, and brings a special flourish to this American album from the late 70s! Jo sings lead vocals on the side-long "Love Somebody" – a tune that builds strongly as Bisso gets answered by a trio of lovely ladies who really brighten up the sound – and who then seem to take over even more on the flipside working with singer Claudia Ferrari. This second side is even better than the first – as things get a bit more spare and stripped-down – snaking out on the smooth stepper "Your Love", getting some funky moogy touches on the P&P-like "Let's Keep It Together", and warming up on the mellow disco number "Thank You Baby". Special bonus – CD features a fifth track – not titled or credited at all! CD

Claude BollingBorsalino/Borsalino & Co (plus bonus tracks) ... CD
Music Box (France), Early 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99
Some of the most famous 70s soundtrack work of French jazz musician Claude Bolling – served up here in a double-length CD that's overflowing with bonus material too! First up is the original score for Borsalino – a really lovely little soundtrack for the French film that starred Alain Delon and Jean-Paul Belmondo as gangsters in the roaring 20s – set to backings by pianist Claude Bolling that's balanced nicely between the styles of his trad jazz work on record, and some of the warmer thematic modes of the French soundtrack theme at the time! Bolling's piano is always very heavy in the mix – sometimes played with the rhythmic quality of a boogie woogie musician, sometimes more spaciously soundtracked – and augmented by just the right touches of strings. The record was a big Euro hit in the 70s, and still holds up well – and this version features 36 tracks from the film – far more than the original album! Borsalino & Co is the sequel – and features a score that takes off nicely from the first – still echoes of Bolling's piano on many tracks, but also fuller, more dramatic orchestrations at times – and maybe a wider range of jazz instrumentation too. CD features 15 tracks from Borsalino & Co – plus 6 more bonus tracks that include vocal songs by Michele Bach and Le Gang, a big band version of the theme, and a "Borsalino Medley" too. CD

The feel here is a lot like that of Brasil 66 – bossa rhythms, sunny CA instrumentation, and lovely female vocals – in this case sung singularly, by the lovely Gracinha Leporace – aka Mrs Mendes! Instrumentation is arguably even better than on Brasil 66 records – with wonderfully groovy organ lines from Manfredo Fest, who plays Lowrey organ instead of the usual Hammond. A really essential slice of bossa nova – and a record we'd never part with! Filled with wonderful tunes that include "Gentle Rain", "Up Up & Away", "Wave", "Do You Know The Way To San Jose", "Cacao do Sal", "Veleiro", "Saiupa", and "Nana". CD

Flying Dutchman/Boplicity (UK), 1973. New Copy ... $10.99 18.99
A pair of later jazzy vocal LP gems by Teresa Brewer, both backed by jazz greats – Songs Of Bessie Smith with Count Basie and Thad Jones, and It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing with Duke Ellington – both released by Flying Dutchman in 1973! Teresa's popularity peaked a couple decades earlier as a girlish pop singer, and she succeeds strongly on both records – not just because of the jazz heavies in the band, but because she has the pipes and genuine affection for the material to pull it off. It's lovely stuff! Songs Of Bessie Smith have the bluesy overtones necessary to make it work, without trying the hide Teresa's naturally softer approach. Basie on piano throughout, with arrangements by Jones, and a great big band on half and more intimate arrangements on the other half. It Don't Mean A Thing. . .works just as wel, with Duke Ellington and Ernie Wilkins arrangements, and great Flying Dutchman players that include Bernard Purdie, Joe Beck and Mtume. 20 tracks in all, including "Trombone Cholly", "Gmme A Pigfoot", "I Ain't Got Nobody", "St Louis Blues", "I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues", "Mood Indigo", "I'm Beginning To See The Light", "I've Got To Be A Rug Cutter", "Tulip Or Turnip", "I'ts Kinda Lonesome Out Tonight" and more. Excellent jazz from trumpet player Maurice Brown – a native of the Chi southside suburb of Harvey, IL – who plays with some of leaders of the contemporary jazz scene when he's not cutting stellar work of his own! Brown's working in a sharp, but roomy quintet setting here, taking cues from the classic bop and more, feeling fresh all the way. The way the Brown's trumpet and Derek Douget's tenor sax work together and within the arrangements reminds us a bit of the work of Roy Hargrove (who Brown has played with) and other players include Chris Rob on piano, Joe Blaxx on drums and Solomon Dorsey on bass. titles include "Fly By Night", "Good Vibrations","Misunderstood", "Time Tick Tock", "Merry Go Round", "Lovely", "The Cycle Of Love", "The Connection", "Daydreams" and "Reflections". The beautiful full scale duets set from Peabo Bryson and Roberta Flack – a record that's no doubt defined by its biggest hit – but the rest is just as great! Born To Love kicks off with "Tonight I Celebrate My Love For You" – a song that's doubtlessly one of the most inescapable slow dance classics of all time – and if its ubiquity overshadows the rest of the record, that's not because it's any less excellent! Peabo's affectionate style is in top form here, and Roberta is such a perfect duet partner – with plenty of lead moments of her own. It definitely feels like a perfectly balanced partnership. The record's got some lovely slow jams on par with the aforementioned pop soul standard, plus some great ones that up the tempo a little bit. Other titles include "Blame It On Me", "Born To Love", "Heaven Above Me", "Comin' Alive", "Can We Find Love Again", "You're Looking Like Love To Me" and more. CD

Van Dyke's got an especially tender touch on the keys – one that hangs in air with great space between the notes – a mode that's simply perfect for Ann's ethereal way of putting over a tune! At times, the sound is very stripped down – almost just vibes and vocals – but at other moments, the groove opens up with some added jazzy instrumentation from a host of guest players – moving from the spare and moody into a sound that's much more in keeping with the regular Schema groove! The group's a quintet – with longtime associate Bobby Bradford on trumpet – yet the sound is in a much more different space than some of the other Carter/Bradford collaborations, much more clearly John's thing – given the way the tunes unfold. Reeds really get their space here – not just Carter's clarinet, but also the flute of James Newton, which seems to have more bite than usual – and in addition to Bradford's trumpet, other group members include Roberto Miranda on bass and William Jeffrey on percussion. Finders Keepers (UK), Mid 80s-Early 90s. Near Mint- 2LP ... $14.99
Sprightly, modernist Kollywood pop from the mid 80s – beautifully sung by KS Chithra, with the boundary-busting sounds and arrangements of Ilaiyaraaja! The songs are wonderful, time-honored regional pop sounds – traditionally-constructed songs blended with some 80s studio touches – loops, multi-tracking, drum machines, synths and electric keys – which all then fuse seamlessly with the haunting strings, percussion and achingly beautiful female vocals you'd expect from Kollywood – mixed with some madder, pulpy bits too! KS Chithra is as lovely of a vocalist as Asha Bhosle and other more internationally known singers, adding the warmth and depth of the songs collected here. We might even love this more than the earlier Ilaiyaraaja work Finders Keepers put together for the Solla Solla compilation – we didn't expect this to surpass it! Wonderful! Includes "Indha Vennila", "Yaaro Sonnaangalaam", "Vandadhe", "Oh My Love", "Pon Maaney", "Kankaliley", "Rathiri Thookkam", "Velli Kizhamai", "Oru Pooncholai", "Nethu Oruthara", "Hey Maina" and more. Cocteau TwinsHead Over Heels ... LP
4AD (UK), 1983. Very Good ... $33.99
Seminal early work from The Cocteau Twins – the kind of record that made the group almost a genre unto themselves – even though so many later artists tried to copy their sound and style! The record is years ahead of its time, especially when you consider that it was produced in the post-punk generation, at a point when less was often more – which was definitely the case with the core contributions to the record, before they were fluffed out into this amazing candyfloss of sonic textures, beats, and the mindblowing vocals of Elizabeth Fraser! The sound is as dark and obtuse as the cover image, but also completely lovely too – surprisingly catchy, even when you can't figure out the lyrics. Titles include "Sugar Hiccup", "When Mama Was Moth", "Musette & Drums", "The Tinderbox", "In The Gold Dust Rush", and "Glass Candle Grenades". LP, Vinyl record album

An amazing chapter in the career of British saxophonist Lol Coxhill – two completely wonderful albums recorded for the Ogun label in the mid 70s! The feel here is similar to Coxhill's seminal albums for Virgin a few years before – jazz that's free, but never too "out" – working in a lovely way to explore sound and tone with a sense of joy and whimsy – often making a brief nod to more traditional modes, but very much in its own spirit. There's a sense of wonder here that we'd almost compare to the best Rahsaan Roland Kirk work for Atlantic – and Coxhill plays soprano sax throughout, joined by players that include Michael Garrick on electric piano, Ken Shaw on guitar, John Mitchell on percussion, Veryan Weston on piano, and Colin Wood on cello. Earth Wind & FireIllumination (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Sanctuary/BMG, 2005. New Copy 2LP (reissue)... $28.99 29.99
Earth Wind & Fire's most ambitiously orchestrated records of recent years – one that pairs the legendary funk/soul/pop collective with contemporary players such as Will I Am of Black Eyed Peas, Raphael Saadiq, Floetry, Big Boi of Outkast, Sleepy Brown and others! Believe us, we were as skeptical as the rest of you when this project first materialized, so it's really a wonderful surprise to report that it works very well! The album is essentially a modern, uptempo neo soul effort by a group that just happens to be legendary – with clean vocals and horns by the group, and warm production by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Will I Am and Raphael Saadiq. It may not be a classic on par with the 70s work, but it's easily the best Earth Wind & Fire album in at least a decade! Tracks include "Lovely People" feat Will I Am, "Show Me The Way" feat Raphael Saadiq, "Work It Out", "Elevated" feat Floetry, "Pass You By", "Pure Gold" and more! LP version features bonus tracks – instrumentals of "Lovely People" and "Elevated". LP, Vinyl record album

Gil EvansSvengali ... CD
Atlantic/Collectables, 1973. Used ... $7.99
A great example of the way that Gil Evans really opened up his groove in the 70s – moving here way way past the cool jazz and third stream of earlier years – into a soulful style that's far groovier than might be expected! Part of the strength of the set is because of the players – as Gil's working with a group of younger soul jazz and spiritual soloists that include Ted Dunbar, Billy Harper, and Hannibal Marvin Peterson – as well as the older soul modernist Richard Williams. But there's also some other specifically Evans-like touches to the record that stand out – like Gil's stark notes on acoustic piano and his lighter work on the electric keys – plus a bit of inventive synthesizer from David Horowitz, who makes a few tracks really crackle with energy. Tracks include "Zee Zee", "Blues In Orbit", "Cry Of Hunger", and "Thoroughbred" – the latter two of which are lovely compositions by Billy Harper! CD

Soundway (UK), 2016. New Copy ... $16.99
The title certainly gets it right – as there's a strongly unified sense of spirit here from Family Atlantica – even more so than on their debut album! As before, there's a range of global elements moving through the mix – currents of South American and African styles, given a slightly more contemporary European presentation – but somehow these guys have really found a way to put everything together with an even tighter, more cohesive sound – one that expands through jazzy solo work on tenor, alto, trumpet, and trombone – and which really draws a lot from the wide range of percussion and other instrumentation used by co-leader Jack Yglesias. The lovely Luzmira Zerpa handles most of the vocals – and some percussion too – and the album also features guest appearances from 70s legends Orlando Julius on tenor and Marshal Allen on alto sax. Titles include "Baiao Infinito", "Near The Ocean", "Efik", "Cosmic Unity", "Canto De Pilon", "El Rio", "Cacao", "Okoroba", and "Neti Neti". LP, Vinyl record album

A beautiful project from pianist Billy Foster – part of a long tradition of jazz mass records that have been popping up from the underground from the late 50s onwards – and maybe one of the best we've heard so far! The setting is spare – really just a trio outing by Billy's group, but with vocals by Renee Miles-Foster, whose lovely voice really shapes some of the best tunes here – tracks that are maybe a bit in the gospel tradition in terms of subject matter, but which also have a warmer jazz vocal approach overall. All music and new lyrics are by Billy – and titles include "He's Always Been There", "Today Is A Day", "Music Is", "God & Savior", "Joyful Noise", "His Grace", and "Just Hold My Hand". CD

Piano, trumpet, and accordion – a really beautiful combination here in the hands of three masters of their instruments – trumpeter Paolo Fresu, accordionist Richard Galliano, and pianist Jan Lundgren! The set isn't the first this trio has recorded – and it definitely shows their deepening sympathies over time – with a special balance of space and sound, quiet and melody, of the sort that less comfortable musical partners wouldn't have been able to carry off this well! Most songs run for just a few minutes, but work together to make for a lovely poem in sound – created from original numbers by the members of the trio, and well-chosen gems by Michel Legrand, Quincy Jones, and others. Tracks include "Blues Sur Seine", "Love Land", "Pavese", "Prayer", "The Magic Stroll", "Love Theme From The Getaway", "Le Jardin Des Fees", "Del Soldato In Trincea", and "Human Requiem". CD

One of the coolest, grooviest albums we've ever heard from vibist Dave Friedman – a set that really lives up to the promise we sometimes expect from other records of his, but never find this clearly! Friedman plays both marimba and vibes – the latter with this bold, chromatic quality that comes through even in gentle moments – a bit like Gary Burton, but turned towards much more varied ends here – as the songs really shift in mood and approach, keeping things fresh throughout! Vocalist Rimona Francis lends her lovely wordless singing style to about half the album's tracks – but in a way that's more like an instrument than a conventional jazz singer – and the group also features surprisingly great acoustic piano work from Pat Rebillot (who we mostly know from keyboard sessions), plus Harvie Swartz on bass and Bruce Ditmas on drums. Titles include "Rachel's Samba", "Rodney's Dream Of Fantasy & Self Fullfilment", "Three Pieces", "Trinkle Trinkle", and "A Smile On The Face Of Mourning". LP, Vinyl record album

A landmark record – both in 60s jazz and bossa nova – and a set that not only bridged worlds of music, but set the tone for so many other albums to come! By the time of this 1964 set, Stan Getz had already issued a few bossa nova experiments on Verve – but this pairing with guitarist Joao Gilberto really pushed the format over the top – thanks in part to the vocals of Gilberto's lovely wife Astrud, who'd never sung in the studio before this famous recording! The record created a sound that was copied endlessly, and which catapulted Astrud to unbelievable fame worldwide – even though she was only included in the session at the last minute, because Joao couldn't sing in English – and the mix of Stan's tenor and Joao's guitar is wonderful – and backed throughout by this light, lilting bossa nova rhythms. Titles include the classic recording of "Girl From Ipanema", plus loads of other bossa classics like "Desafinado", "Cocovado", "O Grande Amor", and "Vivo Sonhando". LP, Vinyl record album

Astrud GilbertoSeptember 17, 1969 ... LP
Verve, 1969. Near Mint- ... $49.99
One of the grooviest records ever from the lovely Astrud Gilberto – a session that beautifully mixes her usual bossa nova with bits of Sunshine Pop and other hip late 60s grooves – all in a mode that really takes off a lot more than other Gilberto albums on Verve! The style here is really wonderful – upbeat, soaring, and joyous on most of the best numbers – a real transformation of Astrud's usual groove, and a great departure from too familiar bossa nova material. The record's been a little bit lost to the shifting sands of time – possibly because it's not as iconic as it might be – but we totally love it, and really consider it one of Gilberto's best moments ever in the studio. Arrangements are by Albert Gorgoni – and titles include a fantastic long jamming version of the track "Beginnings" that sounds completely different from the Chicago hit, and which is a stunning dancefloor groover! The album also includes an English version of "Canto De Osshana" called "Let's Go", plus a groovy uptempo version of the Bee Gee's "Holiday", and the great cut "Love Is Stronger Than We" from the soundtrack to A Man & A Woman. Other tracks include "Think Of Rain", "A Million Miles Away Behind The Door", "Don't Leave Me Baby", and "Summer Sweet (part 1, part 2 to be continued)". LP, Vinyl record album

Mindblowing work from Robert Glasper – a set that makes us fall in love with his music even more than before – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given that we've loved him for years! Glasper's working here in his collaborative Black Radio format – but at a level that's even more perfected than the initial album of this project – a really groundbreaking blend of live jazz instrumentation and underground soul inspiration – served up by Robert's core quartet, with help from a whole host of wonderful guest singers! Glasper alone is worth the price of admission – Fender Rhodes and piano lines that are completely sublime, in that flowing groove that's only gotten better with age – and the combo also features wicked bass from Derrick Hodge, sax and flute from Casey Benjamin, and some damn funky drums from Mark Colenburg – who proves that you don't need any drum loops or samples to make music this great. The singers are the icing on the cake – a lineup that includes Faith Evans, Dwele, Jill Scott, Common, Lupe Fiasco, Lalah Hathaway, Norah Jones, and others – on titles that include "Calls", "Worries", "I Stand Alone", "What Are We Doing", "Trust", "Yet To Find", "You Own Me", "Somebody Else", "Persevere", and "Let It Ride". Deluxe edition features some great bonus material – including "I Don't Even Care" with Macy Gray and Jean Grae, "You're My Everything" with Bilal and Jazmine Sullivan, "Big Girl Body" with Eric Roberson, and "Lovely Day" with a bit of vocals from Bill Withers. Beautiful sounds from Karel Goeyvaeters – a Dutch minimalist with a really wonderful sense of tone! The album features two long pieces, both from the mid 70s – each using a variety of sounds in cyclical fashion – in ways that recall some of the best Terry Riley material of the time – even though some of the construction also echoes the approach of Philip Glass or Steve Reich! Karel really likes things to unfold in a subtle, sensitive way – and the tones move along in these patterns that are sometimes imperceptible, sometimes more striking – occasionally with a bit of dissonance, but often with these really lovely little sounds. A compelling little set from Danny Guglielmi – a mix of weird instrumental numbers and some straighter vocal ones that feature singing by the lovely Dena! The album's somewhere between offbeat jazz and bachelor pad territory – and the album features early tape experiments that have Danny playing bass, guitar, piano, and violin – overdubbing each of them in ways that sometimes used odd effects to create some really weird sounds! The album's never totally over the top, but still pretty cool overall – and Dena's vocals are nicely light and sing-song. A very groovy record from the legendary Francoise Hardy – a set that's not only got the lovely lady out front on vocals and acoustic guitar, but one that also features totally great arrangements from Brit maestro Johnny Harris – who gives most of the record a slightly different vibe than some of Hardy's previous sets! Harris has a great ear for the spacious – opening up the sound at the sides, in ways that only seem to enforce Francoise's majesty in the center – with these subtle, but powerful touches that are also carried on by Charles Blackwell on a few cuts too. The whole thing's wonderful – jingle-jangle pop grooves, sweet guitar lines, and really great French vocals over the top – on titles that include "Si C'est Ca", "Je Changerais D'Avis", "Comme", "Tu Es Un Peu A Moi", "Qu'Ils Sont Heureux", and "Il Est Des Choses". Really lovely sounds from the young Francoise Hardy – easily one of the coolest, most confident female singers in France at the time! Hardy is neither the emotive style of postwar passionate singers, nor the too-cool style of the left bank – and instead, she's got this way of mixing her own acoustic guitar with lightly lyrical arrangements that never overshadow her role in the lead – far less of the "yeh yeh" style that other singers were using, and which Hardy is too-often considered with. There's a beautifully gentle feel to the record – even though the set features some larger arrangements from Marcel Hendrix – and titles include "J'Aurais Voulu", "Nous Tous", "On Dit De Lui", "Comme Tant D'Autres", "Saurai Je", "Va Pas Prendre Un Tambour", and "Le Premier Bonheur Du Jour". The tracks include many originals by Hardy, and a few by Blackwell as well – and the music has less of the acoustic guitar you'd hear on some of Francoise's other albums, and some fuller, bouncier backings that mix French chanson with some groovier 60s pop elements – all in a blend that's completely sublime for the lovely vocals of the lady. Virgin (UK), Early 90s. New Copy 2CD ... $12.99
A pair of wonderful albums from the young Lalah Hathaway – plus bonus tracks too! First up is the self-titled Lalah Hathaway – the first album from Donny Hathaway's soulful daughter – an album that began a legacy that's lasted plenty strongly on its own – even without such a great family pedigree! Lalah's got a nearly-classic style in her work that's a fresh departure from many other soul acts of this period – a style that's almost influenced by the Soul II Soul or Loose Ends groove of the time, but is a bit more mainstream – and which shows that Hathaway has a lot more to offer than a famous last name. Production and arrangements are by Gary Taylor, Angela Winbush, Craig T Cooper, and Andre Fischer – and titles include "Baby Don't Cry", "Heaven Knows", "Somethin", "Stay Home Tonight", "I'm Coming Back", "I Gotta Move On", and "Obvious". Next is A Moment – an overlooked second set from the lovely Lalah Hathaway – a record that got less circulation than her classic debut, but which still very much continues the groove! As before, Lalah's working with a number of different producers throughout – changing things up a bit, but still holding strong with a quality level that's better than most of her contemporaries – thanks to vocals that are there first, and hardly need any studio help at all – and which really unify the proceedings throughout. Titles include a great remake of "Family Affair" with excellent help from BEF – plus "Bad By Myself", "Lean On Me", "Separate Ways", "Better As A Memory", "Do You Suppose", "Rise", and "Let Me Love You". 2CD set features 12 bonus tracks – including "It's Somethin (radio mix)", "Heaven Knows (7" version)", "Baby Don't Cry (radio)", "Heaven Knows (Yvonne Turner rmx)", "It's Somethin (12" mix)", "Baby Don't Cry (crybaby club version)", "It's Somethin (smoove & sassy rmx)", "Night & Day", "Let Me Love You (bed time mix)", "Dreams Don't Lie (club)", "Separate Ways (stringapella)", and "Night & Day (acappella)". A long-lost album from one of our favorite jazz talents of all time – British tenor legend Tubby Hayes, a player we'd easily place on a short list with giants like Dexter Gordon or Sonny Rollins! Like both of those players, Hayes has an incredible talent for longform solos that never lose their fire, direction, or imagination – a quality that emerges here maybe even more strongly than on some of the records that preceded it – as Hayes works with just a quartet, on long tracks that are really dominated by both his great sound, and the strong contributions of pianist Mike Pyne – an equal star on the set! At a time when British jazz was going for a lot of new recording modes, crossover styles, and other gimmicks, the whole thing is a back to basics record for Tubby – but also one that shows just how much he's grown as a soloist in just a few short years – really on fire, as the tenor is driven strongly by the efforts of Ron Mathewson on bass and Spike Wells on drums, completing a great quartet who really get the energy of their leader. Titles include a great version of the Duke Pearson tune "You Know I Care", a lovely take on "Where Am I Going", and the Hayes originals "For Members Only", "Rumpus", and "Grits Beans & Greens". Fantastic stuff – long overdue, and instantly a key addition to the Tubby Hayes Fontana catalog of the 60s! This great 2CD version features the full versions of all the sessions, with a number of takes on some of the tunes – including an unusual version of "Where Am I Going" with the guitar of Louis Stewart instead of the piano of Mike Pyne. Also has a hardcover package, and a nice booklet of notes! CD

Heaven Sent & EcstasyGreatest Love Story ... LP
Jamieko/P-Vine (Japan), 1980. New Copy (reissue)... About October 2, 2020
Heavenly soul from the start of the 80s – a sweet little indie set that's done as a tribute to Minnie Riperton and Kenneth Armstrong! The overall format doesn't have that much to do with Minnie, but the record's still pretty darn great – and the style is a mix of modern, mellow, and boogie – all served up with a real sense of earnestness that matches the cover of the album, and which makes the record stand strongly next to some of the bigger releases of the time. A number of tracks feature vocals by the lovely Pamela Morrison, and the group hails from the Oakland scene of the time – working here under the direction of Barbara J Trotter, who also wrote a good number of the titles on the set too. Titles include the dancefloor jammer "Sho Nuf Funky Beat", plus "We're Together Again", "I See Heaven", "Satisfaction To The Bone Nitty Gritty Naked Bone", "I'm A Lady", "Rapping With My Subconscious Mind", and "We're Together Again". David HessLast House On The Left – Original 1972 Motion Picture Soundtrack (brown colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
One Way Static, 1972. New Copy ... $13.99
David Hess's chillingly great soundtrack to one of the most notorious horror movies of the 70s – Wes Craven's Last House On The Left! Hess's musical pedigree is that of a folk and rock songwriter – and one of the things that makes his songs for Last House On The Left so effective is the way his delicate, tuneful songcraft contrasts with the terrifyingly real sadism and revenge on screen. The other thing that makes it so effective, is that Hess himself portrays the despicable Krug in the film – taking part in said cruelty! The soundtrack has Hess's oddly lovely little songs, along with some incidental period touches, swatches of dialogue and instrumental bits – composed in collaboration with Steve Chapin. This version from One Way Static is totally top notch, too – with liner notes by exploitation cinema and genre veterans Ruggero Deodato, Franco Nero, Ulli Lommel and others. Includes "Little Cows Lookin' For Some Grass", "Baddie's Theme (Instrumental)", "Mari's Birthday Surprise", "Phyllis Spills Her Guts", "Now You're All Alone", "The Chase", "Daddy, Put Your Coat Of Many Colors On", "Mayhem Montage", "Ice Cream Song", "Urban Snatch", "Edude For Chainsaw/Goodbye, Dick" and more. ✨✧ John Hicks/Elise WoodLuminous ... CD
Evidence, 1985. Used ... $7.99
Really lovely work from John Hicks – one of his superb collaborations with flute player Elise Wood – an artist who brings some light, lyrical tones to his music! Wood's on flute, next to Hicks' piano – and the set also features some great tenor from Clifford Jordan – as well as bass from Walter Booker and drums from Jimmy Cobb (although Alvin Queen guests on two tracks.) With players that great, it's hard to miss – and the album's a sparkling set through and through – filled with soul, imagination, and some quiet fire that burns beautifully through the course of the album. Titles include "Luminous", "Yemenja", "Motivation", "Blue & Green", "Chelsea Bridge", "Expectation", and "Ojos De Rojo". CD

Art HiraharaBalance Point ... CD
Posi tone, 2020. New Copy ... $11.99 17.98
A really lovely album from pianist Art Hirahara, and a set that maybe draws its title from the careful balance on the record between Art's lyrical approach to the piano, and the overall energy of the group when they really move together! Hirahara continues to develop fantastically as a pianist with each new record – with a touch that's very personal, but always soulfully swinging – and here, the quartet emphasizes those latter modes when they really pick up – thanks to bass from Joe Martin and drums from Rudy Royston – on a record that also features some well-placed tenor contributions from Melissa Aldana, whose sound adds in just the right amount of color. Titles include "Like Water", "Ascent", "Lament For The Fallen", "Mother's Song", "Blessed Son Mr Weston", and "Fulcrum". CD

Ayako HosokawaMr Wonderful ... LP
Three Blind Mice/Craftman (Japan), 1977. New Copy (reissue)... About December 26, 2019 (delayed)
Mellow vocals from the lovely Ayako Hosokawa – one of Japan's greatest jazz vocalists of the 70s, singing here in a warm and intimate setting. Ayako sings in English, mostly American standards plus a few pop numbers – and the backing for the set includes keyboards, tenor, guitar, and strings – flowing out in the best mellow style of the Three Blind Mice label of the time. The real standout cut is Ayako's great reading of "Feel Like Making Love" – worth the price of the album alone for its dope 70s groove – and other cuts include "When You Smile", "The Lady Is A Tramp", "Misty", "Mr Wonderful", and "The Lady Is A Tramp".
