A great introduction to the music of a criminally neglected figure in British Pop music – the wonderful Louis Philippe, an artist whose sound was always a bridge between the sunshine pop of the 60s and the smart singer/songwriter sounds of the later British scene! The High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan put the package together – and if you know Sean's music, you'll find plenty here to love – as both he and Philippe have an ear trained on Brian Wilson and Burt Bacharach, but refitted for more contemporary modes for the 21st Century – and in Louis' case, there's also a heady contribution from French pop, which means that the cuts here have lyrics in both French and English. There's a 4AD-styled image on the cover – and the set looks at a moment in late 80s music when things were nicely swirling together – when production was getting a bit more layered and sophisticated from a few years before – yet not in a way that was overly polished or commercial! Instead, the style represented a new level of sonic sophistication – ways of taking core sounds and spinning them out with greater depth – which made for some really wonderful textures and shapes in the music – pushing things forward in ways that helped the vocals a lot too! You probably know the name of Jonathan Coe as a writer – for books that include What A Carve Up and The Rotters Club – but he's also had plenty of ties to music, including projects with Louis Philippe and High Llamas – and this new set of jazz-based works done with Artchipel Orchestra! The songs are all penned by Coe, and handled by the group with a great mix of larger charts and individual voices – all at a level that hearkens back to vintage work like this on the UK scene from artists like Mike Westbrook or Michael Gibbs – both of whom would be great comparisons to the vibe of this project! Ferdinando Farao arranged and conducted the group – which features a variety of saxes, flute, trumpet, trombone, and even some mighty nice vibes – on titles that include "Spring In My Step", "Erbalunga", "Looking For Cicely", and "Suspended Moment". Lovely work from one of the greatest pop groups going – and one of the few that really manage to win over our classics-styled ears! The Pearlfishers have an incredible sound that echoes with familiarity, but which pleases us even more with its freshness – an approach that makes us think "have I heard this tune before?", but then makes us smile even more when we realize that it's work by a lesser-known band who manage to fool us into thinking their a classic pop act. Strands of older styles run through the work – starting in the Sunshine Pop generation, and running through the 80s genius of Louis Philippe and early Prefab Sprout – the last of whom, at their best, are possibly one of the best comparisons here. Instrumentation includes some spare but effective use of horns and strings – all in support of the lovely lead vocals of David Scott. Some of the rarest work ever by Sonny Criss – and a key link between his LA bop sides of the mid 50s, and his Prestige comeback sides of the late 60s! The CD features tracks from a rare album that Criss cut in Paris during the early 60s, while he was living in the city and working with the cream of its jazz players. This all-star set has Criss blowing some wonderfully soulful alto in a combo that includes Georges Arvanitas on organ and piano, Rene Thomas on guitar, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Philippe Combelle on drums. The original album is one of the rarest sides we've ever found ourselves looking for over the years – and it's wonderful to have the material back out again with such great fidelity! It's wonderful to hear Criss blowing with an organ/guitar group – but even the piano tracks are pretty darn great.
