Louis JordanBest Of Louis Jordan ... LP
MCA, Mid 40s/Mid 50s/1975. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $3.99
A great collection of Jordan's material from the mid 40s to the mid 50s – starting with his jazzy numbers of the earlier years, and moving into the more blues/rock 'n roll sound of later recordings. His band always sounds great and it also sounds like they're having a good time especially when they participate in the dialogue of the songs. There are a total of 20 songs and they include "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie", "Saturday Night Fish Fry", "Barnyard Boogie", "I Want You To Be My Baby", "Caldonia", "Run Joe", "School Days", "Buzz Me", "Beans & Corn Bread" and "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin". LP, Vinyl record album
(Beige label MCA pressing. Cover has some ring and edge wear.)

✨✧ Louis JordanI Believe In Music ... LP
Classic Jazz, 1973. Very Good+ ... $7.99
The great Louis Jordan – alive and well into the 70s, and working in a style that's even more rootsy and bluesy than the music of his youth! The approach here is nicely stripped-down – a small combo set with Duke Burrell on piano and Irv Cox on tenor – grooving with Jordan in a style that's almost more jazz, and more open than the sound of the Tympany 5 – which allows Louis to open up with even longer, more personal inflections on his lyrics! The groove is still very much in a jump/swing sort of mode – a late 40s postwar approach to rhythm – and Jordan also gets in some great alto sax solos too. Titles include "Hard Head", "Three Handed Woman", "Every Knock Is A Boost", "I Believe In Music", and "Red Top". LP, Vinyl record album
(Early 80s issue.)

✨✧ Oliver SainSt Louis Breakdown – The Best of Oliver Sain ... CD
Sain Sound/P-Vine (Japan), Early 70s. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Killer instrumental funk from the mighty Oliver Sain – one of the hippest cats to ever work the St Louis scene! The package features most of the best cuts from Sain's years at Abet Records, plus some tasty indie moments too – a really tremendous assortment of his sax-heavy grooves, brought together in a package that's overstuffed with greatness! Styles range from heavy funk to some of the more boogie-oriented styles that Sain did later in the 70s – and they've all got a mighty sharp edge, and lots of soul sax work that easily rivals the best that King Curtis, Joe Thomas, or other ebony godfathers had to offer. Titles include the massive sample cut "On The Hill" – plus "St Louis Breakdown", "Comin Down Soul", "Feel Like Dancin", "African Walk", "The Prayer", "Country Funk", "Night Time", "Mr King & Mr Jordan", "20-75", "Strollin", "Party Hearty", "Booty Bumpin", "Soul Serenade", "Scratch My Back", "London Express", and "Going Back To Memphis". Kenny BurrellBlue Lights Vol 1 ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1958. New Copy ... $18.99
Some of Kenny Burrell's best early work! The album catches Kenny in the perfect Blue Note jam session mode of the late 50s – one used also with Jimmy Smith, and which features a number of the label's star players hitting hard with the main soloist. Players on the two volume set include Duke Jordan or Bobby Timmons piano, Junior Cook and Tina Brooks tenor, Louis Smith trumpet, and Art Blakey on Drums. The cuts have a very open-ended blowing session feel, and Kenny comes through surprisingly well, really picking up steam on a way you don't always hear in more restrained recordings. Titles on this volume include "Yes Baby", "Scotch Blues", and "Phinupi". CD
(SHM-CD pressing – part of the Kenny Burrell 90th Anniversary Collection!)

Haruomi HosonoAmerica – Live In US 2019 (2021 Record Store Day Release) ... LP
HMV (Japan), 2021. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... $64.99
Haruomi Hosono has been one of the key creative forces in Japanese music for decades – and he's still sounding surprisingly great here, in a live setting recorded in Los Angeles in 2019 – working with small group backing, as he takes on a range of his own original tunes, plus work from Kraftwerk, Louis Jordan, Shelby Flint, and other unusual sources! The mix of modes hearkens back to Hosono's famous solo records of the 70s – offbeat, but in an understated way – and Hosono's vocals feel as if they haven't aged at all, on titles that include "Angel On My Shoulder", "Radio Activity", "Pom Pom", "Body Snatchers", "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", "Sports Men", and "Absolute Ego Dance" – plus "Honey Moon", which features guest work from Mac DeMarco. Cedar WaltonNaima – Live At Boomer's (Night At Boomers Vol 1 & 2) ... CD
Savoy, 1973. Used ... $14.99
A helluva great CD – one that brings together both volumes of the legendary Night At Boomers live dates on Muse Records from the 70s! The core material is a great little session of soul jazz – and very much in a classic mode, but with touches of the Strata East sound of the 70s. Although Blue Note and Prestige had seemed to abandon straighter soul jazz by the early 70s, Muse was cranking out some nice sides with older players of the 60s scene. This set features Cedar Walton's crack trio with Sam Jones and Louis Hayes, joined by tenorist Clifford Jordan, who was blossoming into a whole new player during the decade. Titles include "Holy Land", "Down In Brazil", "Cheryl", "Naima", "I'll Remember April", "All The Way", and "Bleeker Street Theme". CD

Fremeaux & Associates (France), Late 30s/1940s/1950s/Early 60s. New Copy 3 CDs ... $22.99 29.99
A fantastic collection of music – 66 tracks that show the huge influence of Cuban rhythms in American music during the mid-century years – presented here in a wider range of styles than you might expect! This isn't just Latin music, made by Cuban cats hitting the New York scene – and instead, these are tracks that show the very deep penetration of sounds from Havana – at a level that has the rhythms emerging in soul, hardbop, R&B, and even more standard blues material! The CD divides the music up into three different CDs, each with a different theme – one that looks at rumba in jazz music, another the influence of the mambo, and the third the range of slower Cuban rhythms well into the 60s. Titles include "Dem Tambourines" by Don Wilkerson, "Cuba Doll" by Lloyd Glenn, "Summertime" by Red Saunders, "Soony Roony" by Slim Gaillard, "De Laff's On You" by Louis Jordan, "Conga Brava" by Duke Ellington, "I Come From America" by Chris Powell, "Jock A Mo" by Sugar Boy Crawford, "Woke Up This Morning" by BB King, "Fool Burro" by Mabel Scott, "Cu-Blue" by Billy Taylor, "Arabian Love Call" by Art Neville, "Out Of Nowhere" by Cal Tjader, "I've Waited So Long" by Eddie Cochran, "She Wants To Mambo" by The Chanters, "Mambo Hop" by Oscar Saldana, and "Mambocito Mio" by Illinois Jacquet. ✨✧ Oliver SainMain Man ... LP
Abet, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Oliver Sain's first album, and head and shoulders above the later ones, which is saying a lot! Sain works a more varied groove here than the uptempo funk he's most well known for, but there's no shortage of gritty, greasy St Louis goodness oozing from these tracks with his warm, soulful sax adding a touch of polish to the proceedings! And don't get us wrong, the funk is well represented too, giving you a killer set that hits all the stops! 9 numbers in all, including "Comin Down Soul", "On The Hill", "20-75", "Scratch My Back", 'Georgia", "St Louis Breakdown" and "Mr King & Mr Jordan". ✨✧ Joe ZawinulMoney In The Pocket ... LP
Atlantic, 1966. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Arguably the best solo record that Joe Zawinul ever cut – and one of the few to really show him working in the soulful style that he had with Cannonball Adderley's famous 60s combo! The record features Joe on piano – stepping out on cuts that still have all the soul jazz currents that he brought to his work with Cannon – those rolling lines and heavy left-hand grooves that made a Zawinul groove instantly infectious! The lineups shift a bit here, but include heavyweight players throughout – including Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Clifford Jordan or Joe Henderson on tenor, Pepper Adams on baritone, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums! The presence of those giants puts the whole thing in Blue Note or Prestige Records 60s territory – and titles include "Money In The Pocket", "If", "Midnight Mood", "Some More Of Dat", "Sharon's Waltz", and "Del Sasser". LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono red and purple label pressing. Cover has light aging and a name in pencil on front.)
