Lorenzo Morresi E Le IsolePop Flop ... CD
Space Echo (Italy), 2023. New Copy ... $18.99 22.99
A really cool little record – one that takes an older Italian sound library mode and reworks it with some of the contemporary flavor of the Schema label – but all with live instrumentation that's mighty nice all the way through! Lorenzo Morressi handles bass, guitar, and plenty of vintage keyboards – while Luicano Cantone plays live drums throughout, which gives the record a crisp crackle that might be missing if the pair worked with too many programmed rhythms, samples, or overdubs! There's also plenty of live instrumentation on the set too – including sublime flute lines from Tenderlonious, and electric piano from Giovanni Guerretti – on titles that include "Allegro Funerario", "Slalom", "Odeon", "Savana Urban", "Beta Erotica", "Sulla Strada Della Luna", and "Poste Presente". ✨✧ Adam Rudolph/Tyshawn Sorey/Sae Hashimoto/ Russell Greenberg/Levy LorenzoArchaisms II (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Defkaz, 2024. New Copy ... $27.99 31.99
An expanded version of the Archaisms meeting between Tyshawn Sorey and Adam Rudolph – as here, the duo are adding in three other musicians, and performing love on a long improvised creation – one that's very heavy on percussion, punctuated with lots of great piano sounds too! Both Sorey and Rudolph play piano – and Sorey handles the drum kit as well, while Rudolph delivers his usual range of percussion – augmented by additional percussion from Sae Hashimoto, Russel Greenberg, and Levy Lorenzo. Rudolph uses electronic effects at times, similar to other projects – but there's a very earthy, spontaneous vibe to the whole set – partly free improvisation, partly rhythmic progressions from the percussionists. ✨✧ Lorenzo Mattotti & Jorge ZentnerCrackle Of The Frost (hardcover) ... Book
Fantagraphics, 2012. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautiful graphic novel from the brush of Lorenzo Mattotti – an artist we first fell in love with for his groundbreaking Fires book back in the 80s, still very much at the top of his game here! The text is penned by Jorge Zentner, and the book marks the first English translation of any of his work – but to us, the real draw is Mattotti – whose images sit like these beautiful little color paintings, two to a page – balanced with the text to draw the lovely, personal story forward with care and class that are unsurpassed in publications of this nature. The book is 118 pages, full color, and hardcover. Book

22A (UK), 2022. New Copy 2LP ... Out Of Stock
British reedman Ed "Tenderlonious" Cawthorne is a player who always seems to give us something fresh and different with each new release – and this time around, he's teamed up with Lorenzo Morresi for a great take on the territory of Italian sound library grooves of years past! The record is plenty darn funk, and has as much sweet keyboard work as it does flute and sax work from Tenderlonious – who himself handles some of the keys, alongside Morressi, who also handles bass and guitar as well! The group's a quartet, with some additional keyboards from Emilio Merone – which will give you an idea of how many keys are at play on the album – on titles that include "Movimento Astratto", "Estate", "Doppio Sogno", "Tema Cinque", "Bazar Milano", "Cosmica Italiana", and "Classico". ✨✧ Barney WilenAuto Jazz – The Tragic Destiny Of Lorenzo Bandini ... LP
MPS (Germany), 1967. Very Good+ Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
One of the wildest albums ever recorded by French tenorist Barney Wilen – a mix of avant jazz and sound effects, set to wax in tribute to Lorenzo Bandini – a famous Italian racer who died tragically during the 1967 Monaco Grand Prix! Wilen was an automobile enthusiast in the late 60s, and happened to be recording the race on a Nagra for himself – but, after witnessing the death of Bandini, Wilen decided to incorporate his tape of the race into an extended performance dedicated to the late driver. The sound is quite unusual – much farther out than any of Barney's other albums – and the tapes of the race are joined with free-flowing tenor, and piano – plus bits of organ and prepared piano as well – all played by by Francois Tusques along with Wilen, with support from Beb Guerin on bass and Eddy Gaumont on drums. The real star, though, is Bandini's Ferrari, which races in and out of the jazz playing, coming to a mournful end with the termination of the piece. The album's a totally unique recording – and stands as one of the most unusual moments in the history of Wilen's career, and the legendary MPS label! Titles include "Start", "Tribune Princiere", "Hair Pin", and "Canyon Sound & Destiny". LP, Vinyl record album

Fabrizio Bosso & Flavio BoltroTrumpet Legacy ... CD
Sound Hills (Japan), 2005. Used ... $14.99
Beautiful twin trumpet work from the team of Flavio Boltro and Fabrizio Bosso – two Italian players who find some wonderful space together on this set! There's a soaringly sublime quality that takes us back to some of our favorite straight work of the 70s by Freddie Hubbard or Woody Shaw – both players who seem to be a key influence here, but not so much so that Boltro and Bosso are simply copping their styles. The way they come together on the heads of the tunes is great – filled with power, life, and joy – and when they spin out on their own solos, they've definitely each got their own bold voices – supported here with strong and sensitive rhythm from the trio of Luca Mannutza on piano, Luca Bulgarelli on bass, and Lorenzo Tucci on drums. Titles include "Woman's Glance", "Moontrane", "Eighty One", "First Smile Jazz A Doc", "Whoopin Blues", "Lotus Blossom", and "Little Sunflower". CD

InvestigatorsInvestigators Greatest Hits – The Rare Grooves ... LP
Freestyle (UK), Late 70s/Early 80s. New Copy ... $23.99 28.99
Crucial cuts from The Investigators – a UK lovers rock group, but one who borrow plenty from American soul as well – as you might guess from their look on the cover, which almost makes them appear like some east coast indie act from the early 80s! The rhythms are definitely reggae on most tracks, but they're blended with a warmer modern soul style too – easygoing, in true lovers rock style – and given some great vocals from lead singers Michael Gordon and Lorenzo Hall. Titles include remakes of "Close To You" and "How Could I Let You Get Away" – plus originals "Run Away Child", "Marley's Gone", "Baby I Am Yours", "Turn Out The Light", "Living In A World Of Magic", and "Woman I Need Your Loving". Anita O'Day & Billy MayAnita O' Day & Billy May Swing Rodgers & Hart ... LP
Verve, 1960. Near Mint- ... $19.99
An extremely playful set of tunes from vocalist Anita O'Day – working here with some lively Billy May arrangements that really show the best side of her sound at Verve! The tracks are all Rogers & Hart numbers – as you'd guess from the title – and Anita swings them with a bright style that also has a nice undercurrent of sadness that perfectly gets at the bittersweet qualities of Lorenzo Hart's lyrics. Titles include "I've Got Five Dollars", "Spring Is Here", "To Keep My Love Alive", "Falling In Love With Love", "I Could Write A Book", "Have You Met Miss Jones", and "Lover". LP, Vinyl record album

Lyman Woodard OrganizationSaturday Night Special (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Strata/BBE (UK), 1975. New Copy 2LP Gatefold (reissue)... $34.99 39.99
Hypnotic organ funk from Lyman Woodard – an old bandmate of Dennis Coffey, and one of the shining lights of the 70s Detroit scene! This is amazing, amazing stuff – Woodard's electric piano, organ and occasional mellotron and Norma Bell's alto saxophone lend a cosmic funk aspect throughout, very much like Death Wish-era Herbie Hancock – with a laidback, tripped-out groove that's really mindblowing! Ron English accents the thing perfectly with his languid guitar and bass groove, while Leonard King and Lorenzo Brown's drumming and percussion can keep the groove adrift, or tear it up in a funky maelstrom depending on the mission of the cut. It's totally essential Strata jazz funk – and a record we've rarely seen in the original pressing. Tracks include "Saturday Night Special", "Joy Road", "Belle Isle Daze", "Creative Musicians", "Cheeba", "On Your Mind", "Allen Barnes", and "Help Me Get Away". BGP (UK), Late 60s/1970s. New Copy 2LP ... $22.99 24.99
One of the deepest-digging entries in the Super Funk series so far – a blistering batch of underground singles that serve up some of the roughest funk of their generation! We'll be honest in saying that we'd only heard a few of the tracks here before – and our hats are off to BGP for taking this already-great series and making it go even deeper – far past familiar funk classics that usually get showcased on the label, and much more into the realm of the crate-digging underground, or the ebay-rarity stratosphere! A handful of cuts here are previously unreleased – never even issued on wax back in the day – and the rest are all pretty darn hard to find too, and all plenty darn great from a musical perspective. The package features a whopping 21 tracks in all – including a rare 1970 funky remake of "Twine Time" by Alvin Cash, plus "Home Brew" by Miles Grayson, "Just Sitting" by Smithstonian, "Can't Get Enough" by 87th Off Broadway, "Hi Off Life" by Eternal Flames, "Give Me Another Chance" by The Uniques, "Hold On" by Lorenzo Holden, "Free The Soul Man" by La May & Company, "Little Boy Blue" by The Phillips Brothers, "You'd Be Good For Me" by Jeanette Jones, "Who Done It? Who Drained The Pool?" by Big Daddy Green, "Low Rider (Deuce & A Quarter)" by Smokey Wilson, "Can't Buy Soul" by Hebrew Rogers, "Shake A Leg" by Jackie Wilson, "Face To Face" by The Explosions, and "Turn Around & Go" by Lee Bernard. ✨✧ Marcus BelgraveGemini II (Japanese paper sleeve edition) ... CD
Tribe/P-Vine (Japan), 1974. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
One of the key records from the Detroit Tribe Records scene of the 70s – a masterful blend of spiritual jazz and deeper ideas, and maybe the greatest record ever cut by trumpeter Marcus Belgrave! The set was originally issued on the Gem Eye label in 1974, in a pressing of only 1000, the record's done nothing but increase in legend since – and for good reason too, given that the Tribe pressing got wider circulation, and other reissues have really helped establish the legend of the music! The groove picks up in the same domain as the better Art Ensemble Of Chicago records of the late 60s and early 70s – with the rubbery funk electric bass lines and celestial groove of the funkier moments, but deeper sounds of more spiritual points too. Trumpeter Marcus Belgrave plays in a beautiful ensemble, packed with Tribe labelmates – Wendell Harrison on tenor sax & percussion, Phil Ranelin on trombone, and Harold McKinney on electric piano. Roy Brooks and Billy Turner are on drums and percussion, and the expansive vibe is fleshed out with the help of Lorenzo Brown on bongos and Daryl Dybka on mini Moog. The record includes Belgrave's beautiful epic "Space Odyssey", which has a long flowing cosmic groove, nice electronics, and haunting trumpet solos. Other cuts include "Gemini II", "Marcia's Opal", "Glue Fingers (Parts I & II)", and "Odoms Cave". CD

✨✧ Billy BondBilly Bond Y La Pesada – Vol 1 & 2 ... CD
Cloud Forest (New Zealand), 1970/1971. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Heady and heavy work from Billy Bond and La Pesada Del Rock & Roll – a guitar heavy group from Argentina, and one with plenty of blues rock overtones! The guitars are definitely turned up to 11 here – jamming with an intensity to match some of the best hard rock sides from Peru reissued by the Lazarus label in recent years – and like those sets, there's a sound here that's an intensification of earlier beat group modes – taken into much harder territory for the 70s. The production is great – earthy, trippy, and a little bit spooky – and the album's got an oddly unsettling feel, one that's familiar at first, but then increasingly estranged as the record moves on. Quite compelling, and with 16 tracks that include "Dueno De Tu Piel", "El Parque", "Buen Dia Senor Presidente", "Divertido Reventado", "Salgan Al Sol", "La Maquina", "Voy A Ver Un Amigo", "Para Que Nos Sirven", and "La Marcha De San Lorenzo". ECM, 1978. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A near-legendary album from Pat Metheny – the real birth of the "Metheny sound" on record, and a perfect example of the magically fluid groove that he crafted with keyboardist Lyle Mays! The sound here is hard to describe – and even harder when you try to pick out the individual keyboard and guitar bits – because the overall feel of the record is so well wrapped up and lyrically together, yet manages to do so without falling into any too-slick styles or cliched approaches to fusion. We're stunned at how much this one still delights us over the years, and the record still stands as a landmark in its field. Uuquipleu, 1974. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A rare live performance from the legendary Lyman Woodard Organization – captured here at the height of their powers in the 70s! The Organization has a really unique approach to their groove – one that starts in jazz, but moves quickly into funk – with a spirit that you'd find in other 70s groups like Funk Inc or The Nineteenth Whole – both of which have the same soulful local spirit as Lyman's mighty group! Woodard himself is a wonderful organist – playing with these freewheeling lines that open the Hammond up strongly way past the Jimmy Smith generation, with a groove that's often soaring, but still tightly rhythmic too – a hypnotic vamp that's perfect for jamming tracks like these. Other group members are great too – and include Ron English on guitar, Norma Bell on alto sax, Lorenzo Brown on percussion, and Sundiata on congas – a very hip lineup that makes things really cook on the set! The recording was originally done for radio, and there's a few announcer bits – but that professional setting also makes the album sound way better than just a dodgy ol' local tape might. Titles include "Organ Interlude", "Kimba", "On Your Mind", "Last Tango In Paris", "You Make Me Feel Brand New", and "Cheeba". CD

Pianist Paul Giallorenzo has a fantastic flow here – a deeply personal sound that certainly warrants the title – and which is set up beautifully in a trio with Josh Abrams on bass and Mikel Patrick Avery on drums! It's great to hear Abrams working as a sideman in a setting that's a bit more standard than some of his own projects – as his basswork is sublime, and really matches the pacing and energy of Giallorenzo's work on the keys – in a mode that's modern, but never too avant – with almost the freshness of some of the most inventive pianists of the 60s! Paul wrote all the tunes on the album, and they're extremely fresh – not overplayed standards, or easygoing melodies – but instead material that finds its own space and pace, but without ever calling undue attention to itself. A Chicago group with a really great approach to improvisation – long tracks that seem to build out of a slow pulses of energy between the players – finding their "groove" at the start, letting things flow, then really adding a lot of their own voices to the mix! The main trio features Charlie Kirchen on bass, which is really the core of the sound – plus Ryan Packard on drums and a bit of electronics, and Paul Giallorenzo on electronics, keyboards, and pump organ – the last of which sounds as cool as you might imagine – and which really unlocks the sonic possibilities of the project! The great Ben Lamar Gay appears on side b, the long track "The End" – and his work on cornet really adds a lot of spirit and soul to the cut – a nice break from the others in a really great way. But side a is great too – and features the long improvisation "The Beginning". LP, Vinyl record album
