Logan RichardsonAfrofuturism ... CD
Whirlwind, 2021. New Copy ... $13.99 14.98
We've always loved the music of Logan Richardson, but here he's onto something completely new and groundbreaking – as you might begin to guess from the cover and title! Logan still blows alto sax, but he also handles piano and keyboards, and works in this swirling mix of sound that really lives up to what you might expect – really far-seeing future jazz – with rhythms that shift and soar, instrumentation that shimmers and glows, and a sound that's very cosmic and righteous throughout! The set also features vibes and keyboards from Peter Schlamb, guitars from Igor Osypov, bass from Dominique Sanders, and drums from Ryan Lee and Corey Fonville – set to some occasional vocals from Laura Taglialatela, and light use of strings to really give the music a sense of majesty. Titles include "Say My Nhame", "Awaken", "The Birth Of Us", "Black Wallstreet", "Farewell Goodbye", "For Alto", "According To You", "Praise Song", and "Photo Copy". CD

Logan RichardsonShift ... CD
Blue Note, 2016. Used ... $6.99
The Blue Note debut of alto saxophonist Logan Richardson – an up-and-coming player you might know from a few previous records, or his work with Jason Moran, Gerald Clayton, or the Next Collective! This set may well surpass all those other projects, though – as Richardson's really emerging as a visionary in his own right – leading a creative quintet here that features strong piano and Fender Rhodes from Moran, guitars from Pat Metheny, and drums from Nasheet Waits – a lineup that might well intimidate a weaker player, but which really seems to set Richardson on fire! The presence of both Metheny and Moran is great – and gives the music this electric vibe that also retains an edge – one that makes for a nice counterpart to Logan's lines on alto, and which seems to underscore some of their darker qualities too. Production and performance are pretty straightforward, which is a further strength of the set – and titles are mostly originals – save for a version of Bruno Mars' "Locked Out Of Heaven". Original tracks include "Time", "Alone", "Imagine", "Creeper", "Mind Free", and "In Your Next Life". CD

Gerald ClaytonHappening – Live At The Village Vanguard ... CD
Blue Note, 2020. New Copy ... $12.99 13.99
Pianist Gerald Clayton live at the Village Vanguard, presented here in two different modes – two tracks in trio formation, with Joe Sanders on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums – the rest with a really wonderful quintet that draws a lot from the work of Logan Richardson on alto and Walter Smith III on tenor! Clayton's piano work has just gotten deeper and more complex over the years – and here, he's a master of moods, especially on the darker side of the spectrum – which can be really balanced in a great way by the hand-in-glove interplay between Richardson and Smith, both players show seem to share that way of swelling up in sound that Gerald brings to the piano. The approach isn't easy to put in words instantly – but we might say that the whole thing has a very resonant quality, something really special and stirring – on titles that include "Envisionings", "Rejuvenation Agenda", "Take The Coltrane", "A Light", "Celia", and "Patience Patients". Gerald ClaytonTributary Tales ... CD
Motema, 2017. Used ... $6.99
The musical vision of Gerald Clayton just seems to be getting stronger and stronger – to a point at which records like these are almost hard to conceive in terms of his earliest work! The set's got a very progressive, righteous sort of vibe – and a style that mixes shorter sonic tracks with longer jazz-based flow – handled by Clayton on piano, Logan Richardson on alto, Ben Wendel on tenor, Joe Sanders on bass, and Justin Brown on drums. The record's got some guest percussion on a few tracks, and spoken vocals from Aja Monet and Carl Hancock Rux on two especially striking numbers that really seem to find ways for Clayton's vision to extend itself past standard jazz. Titles include "Dimensions Interwoven", "Soul Stomp", "Wakeful", "Unforeseen", "Patience Patients", "Are We", "Lover's Reverie", and "Squinted". CD
