Lizz WrightDreaming Wide Awake ... CD
Verve, 2005. Used ... $2.99
The second outing from vocalist Lizz Wright – done in the same sweetly folksy style as her debut, but in a way that seems to have even more of a focus overall. The backing on the set is especially nice – mostly just spare keyboards, bass, and drums, plus some great work on acoustic guitar by Chris Bruce – and titles include versions of "A Taste Of Honey", "Stop", "Old Man", "Wake Up Little Sparrow", and "I'm Confessin" – plus the originals "Hit The Ground", "Trouble", and "Dreaming Wide Awake". Lizz WrightSalt ... CD
Verve, 2003. Used ... $4.99
A sweet young jazz singer – steeped in the traditions of Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dianne Reeves, striking out on her own in a really solid debut album! The set's got a warm, jazzy feel – lots of keyboards and piano in the backings, but done in a way that lifts up the voice of Lizz on a pillow of soul and spirituality. Tracks build from slow beginnings to a rich array of tones and colors – done in a style that's emotive, but subtly so. Titles include nice covers of "Open Your Eyes You Can Fly" and "Afro Blue" – plus "Soon As I Get Home", "Salt", "Fire", "Eternity", "Lead The Way", and "Silence". CD

✨✧ Lizz WrightFreedom & Surrender ... CD
Concord, 2015. Used ... Out Of Stock
Lizz Wright just keeps on growing and growing as a singer – past the jazz and soul of her roots, to a space that easily has the singer reaching out to a much greater range of ears, but all while keeping true to her style! There's definitely a jazzy heart at the core of the record – and most instrumentation is from a small combo – but the expression in Wright's vocals moves into very personal territory that's very much her own – feeling, but never overdone – catchy, but never cloying – and set up in a balance that maintains all the class and poise we've always loved in the singer. Highlights include a duet with Gregory Porter on "Right Where You Are", and a nice cover of Nick Drake's "River Man" – and other titles include "Here & Now", "Surrender", "Blessed The Brave", "Freedom", "The Game", "Lean In", "Somewhere Down The Mystic", and "Real Life Painting". LedisiLedisi Sings Nina ... CD
BMG, 2021. New Copy ... $11.99 12.98
We've loved the music of soul singer Ledisi since her first self-released album back in the 90s – and since that time, she's matured even more as a vocalist – to a point where she can easily take on the music of Nina Simone with all the glory it deserves! This special set features Ledisi singing with accompaniment from the Metropole Orkest and New Orleans Jazz Orchestra – each of whom bring a sense of fullness, but in different ways – as Ledisi stretches out the tunes with the kind of sophistication and richness that Nina might have done – but in a voice that's all her own. The set features guests appearances from Lizz Wright and Alice Smith – but Ledisi hardly needs them at all, as she's very firmly in the lead – on titles that include "Feeling Good", "Wild Is The Wind", "Work Song", "Four Women", "Ne Me Quitte Pas", "My Baby Just Cares For Me", and "I'm Going Back Home". VariousElla 100 – Live At The Apollo ... CD
Concord, 2020. New Copy ... $6.99 15.99
An all-star tribute to Ella Fitzgerald – a special show recorded live at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, in celebration of what would have been her 100th Birthday! The whole event is hosted by David Allen Grier, and begins with a vintage 1934 Apollo Amateur Night radio broadcast – before going into a host of Ella favorites, done by others – mostly with backing by the Count Basie Orchestra! Patti Austin sings "A Tisket A Tasket" and "When I Get Low I Get High", Andra Day sings "Ain't Misbehavin", Ayo & Afro Blue perform "Oh Lady Be Good", Lizz Wright sings "Love You Madly" and "The Nearness Of You", Cassandra Wilson sings "Cry Me A River", and a few other numbers feature different pairings of the artists involved. ✨✧ Jose JamesNo Beginning No End 2 ... CD
Rainbow Blonde, 2020. New Copy ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Really mindblowing work from Jose James – an artist we loved right from his very first record, but one who has us completely over the top with this record – a set that may well push James from the soul underground into firmly classic territory – the sort of space that will have the record standing strong with soul classics from decades back, and for a long time to come! Jose's tremendous vocally, but there's also an extra-special spirit to some of these tunes – one that's still very strongly in the hands of the man himself, even though James opens the door for plenty of guests – a lineup that includes Ledisi, Christian Scott Atunde Adjuah, Aloe Blacc, Lizz Wright, Eric Truffaz, and others – not the kind of guests who overwhelm and take a too-strong turn in the spotlight, but the right sort of addition to the core sound. Titles include a surprisingly great remake of "Just The Way You Are" – plus "Turn Me Up", "I Need Your Love", "Saint James", "Take Me Home", "Oracle", "Feels So Good", "I Found A Love", and "You Know What I Do".
