Hoyt Curtain, William Hanna, & Joseph BarberaJohnny Quest ... CD
La La Land, 1964. New Copy 2 CDs ... $24.99
Music from an ultra-cool kid cartoon of the 60s – sounding almost better here away from the screen than it did in the TV show! The main theme of Johnny Quest has a great current of mod jazz, and there's a fair bit of that on some of the other tracks too – modes that usually feature a larger ensemble with great horn work, in a style that's maybe almost the sound that you'd get if Henry Mancini were scoring a cartoon – with all the richness of color that might imply! Other tracks are more scene-setters, but still quite far from the usual modes for a cartoon – and although the music's credited partly to the show's creators, the Hanna-Barbera team, we're guessing the real genius comes from the music direction of Hoyt Curtain and Ted Nichols. 2CD set features material from a number of different shows – including "Dragons Of Ashida", "The Robot Spy", "Arctic Splashdown", "Calcutta Adventure", "Treasure Of The Temple", "Attack Of The Tree People", "Terror Island", "The Mystery Of The Lizard Men", and "The Curse Of Anubis" – plus other shows too, the main themes, and even some bonus tracks! Brian EnoAmbient 4 – On Land (180 gram pressing) ... LP
EG/Astralwerks, 1982. New Copy (reissue)... $16.99 24.99
Brian Eno leaves the Airports, and moves On Land – but still keeps things pretty much in the spare sound of the Ambient series! The lineup here features a few more extra musicians – including Michael Beinhorn on synth, Jon Hassell on trumpet, Axel Gros and Michael Brook on guitars, and Bill Laswell on bass – but all players are used sparingly, and the overall sound hardly acknowledges their presence. Daniel Lanois helped in the recording of some of the material – an early moment in his famous partnership with Eno – and the tracks were recorded over the space of 4 years – with occasional glimmers of the British countryside through the hazy atmospherics of Eno's landscape. Titles include "Lizard Point", "Tal Coat", "Shadow", "A Clearing", "Unfamiliar Wind", "Lantern Marsh", and "The Lost Day". LP, Vinyl record album

Mestizo BeatCanoga Madness ... LP
California Soul Music, 2020. New Copy ... $18.99
An excellent album from a group who've really got the right sort of name – as the music here is equal parts Latin and soul, with plenty of funky elements at the core – very much in the best 70s style of the west coast Chicano Soul generation! The music is all instrumental – heavy on percussion next to the drums at the core – with riffing guitar, heavy bass, and a great use of jazzier elements on keyboards and saxes – which really elevates the music past standard funk, into territory that's often as rich as our favorite groups with a similar groove from back in the day! Most tracks are instrumental, but Terin Ector sings on "Find A Better Way" – next to other tracks that include "When Walls Fall", "Canoga Madness", "ANTFBS", "Lizard Brain", "El Camino Del Caballo", and "Osvaldo's Rebellion". ✨✧ VariousSpiritual Jazz Vol 13 – Now Part 1 – Modern Sounds For The 21st Century ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $14.99
A tremendous entry in this wonderful series – a set that proudly proclaims its contents with the "NOW" on the cover! Back when the Spiritual Jazz series first started on the Jazzman label, the music was mostly relegated to material of the John Coltrane generation and the generation that followed – but in the past decade or so, there's been a huge explosion in new artists that explore the deeper, more righteous currents of jazz – music that's pulled in from the farther reaches of free improvisation, to righteous, message-oriented styles that often mix modal rhythms with more exploratory solo passages. Yet this new generation is hardly slavish to the sounds of Impulse Records – as they've really moved beyond, and have used a globe's worth of influences and new 21st Century concepts to bring fresh spirit to the music – opening things up in ways that have made this new movement one of our greatest sources of inspiration in recent years. This double-length entry is a fantastic overview of the sounds that are currently reshaping the planet – and titles on volume 1 include "Lizard Waltz" by Benjamin Herman "Wisdom Of Elders" by Shabaka & The Ancestors, "Soul" by Cat Toren's Human Kind, "Nimeton" by Oiro Pena, "Echoes Of Ancient Sahara" by Darryl Yokley's Sound Reformation, "Winter" by Black Flower, "Shamal Wind" by Chip Wickham, "An Angel Fell" by Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids, "Sounds Like Now" by Damon Locks, "Gnawa" by Makaya McCraven, and "The Black Ark" by Nat Birchall. Island/Get On Down, 1976. New Copy (reissue)... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The King Kong of dub records, and we're not just saying that because of the freaky deaky cover image of a super ape with a belly full of roast fish, cornbread and makka stepping on a croaking lizard with a tree in one hand and a "tree" in the other! Classic Lee Perry and as essential of a dub set as there's ever been, rendering Scratch's dense, multi-layered Black Ark rhythms in all their raw glory, with toasts and vocal snippets darting in and out of the dubs courtesy Prince Jazzbo, the Heptones, Dillinger and Scratch himself. ✨✧ VariousThose Shocking Shaking Days – Indonesian Hard Psychedelic Progressive Rock & Funk 1970 to 1978 ... LP
Now Again, 1970s. New Copy 3 LPs ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A truly incredible overview of 70s Indonesian funk, rock and psychedelia infused recordings – and it's beautifully put together, to boot – one of the very best compilations yet from Stones Throw's Now Again branch! There's an undercurrent of funk to most of this material, but it's always topped off with prog & psych rhythmic heaviness and dexterity, and usually done with passionate, feverish vocals. The story of Indonesian underground music of the time is a complicated one, and one that's been hard to come by outside of the region, given the difficult political circumstances of the time. This amazing set does a tremendous service for this music. Essential! Includes "Haai" by Panbers, "Anti Gandja" by The Brims, "Bad News" by Rollies, "People" by Super Kid", "Evil War" by Shark Move, "Shake Me" by Aja, "The Promise" by Rhythm Kids, "Uang" by Duo Kribo, "Pantun Lama" by Murry Lama, "Hear Me" by Golden Wing, "Candle Light" by Beny Soebardja And Lizard and more. ✨✧ VariousLocal Customs – Lone Star Lowlands (with bonus tracks) ... LP
Numero, Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Out Of Stock
Rare rock from the Golden Triangle scene of Southeast TX in the late 60s and early 70s – a well-curated overview of the stylistically sprawling material being cut at Mickey Rouse's Lowland Recording Studio in Beaumont! Texas rock of the late 60s and early 70s justifiably brings to mind acts like The 13th Floor Elevators and The Bubble Puppy – tripped out psychedelia in other words, but Texas is huge, and there was a heck of a lot more going on than just the best remembered cult favorites. The music coming out of just the Beaumont, Port Arthur, Orange, Texas "triangle" chronicled here was incredibly diverse. It includes proto TX boogie rock that's a clear precursor to early ZZ Top, harmony flavored numbers that sound closer to Cali than they do The Lone Star State, one track that somehow fuses CS&N with The Beatles and does so with prominent cowbell in the mix (and it's good!!!), punchy psych grit, and swaggering country rock with some twang in the strings that feels a bit more profoundly Texan. You don't need our word that The Numero Group has devoted some serious attention to detail – with a large booklet of notes, photos and histories, plus the impressive Lost In The Golden Triangle "family tree" of the regional musicians involved – as if discovering these long buried regional relics wasn't impressive enough already. Beautiful! 28 tracks on the 2LP version...6 more than on the CD! "Trash One" by the Lowland Studio Band, "Live My Life Today" by Insight Out, "Simple House" by Mother Lion, "Love Of The Morning" by Circus, "Take A Look At Your Friends" by Next Exit, "You Know I Love You" by Roy Briggs & Alton Tew, "Calling Me Home (Demo)" by Donald Thomas and more, plus the LP only tracks "Lizard" by Lowland Studio Band, "Let Me Listen" by Sage, "Groundhog Day" by Boot Hill and more. LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Dan RosenboomAbsurd In The Anthropocene ... CD
Gearbox (UK), 2020. Used ... Out Of Stock
Dan Rosenboom's a trumpeter with a mighty fierce sound – one that's pushed forward with his own bold lines, and with this kind of rumbling, deep-burning energy from the rest of the group! The approach is a bit hard to describe, but there's often this sense of the bass and guitar creating these dark currents at the bottom of the music, while the drums crackle sharply, and Rosenboom's horn soars out in the lead – blowing with plenty of sharp changes and an effortless sense of energy. Other players on the set include Gavin Templeton on alto and piano, Tim Conley on guitar, Lim Lefebvre on bass, and Gary Novak on drums – and titles include "Mr Lizard Said", "Lemonade", "Apes In Rapture", "Heliopteryx", "Green Moon", "Obsidian Butterfly", and "Nebulounge".
