✨✧ Little FeatElectrif Lycanthrope – Live at Ultra-Sonic Studios, 1974 (2021 Black Friday Release) ... LP
Rhino, 1974. New Copy 2LP Gatefold ... Just Sold Out!
The first-ever official issue of a concert that's gone on to be the stuff of legend over the years – a New York radio concert by the classic Little Feat lineup – and a set that has Lowell George and the group really sounding their best away from the studio! There's a lean, laidback quality to the whole record – as if the group were playing and jamming for themselves in some private spot in upstate New York – making a special sort of spontaneous magic on tunes that include "Oh Atlanta", "Rock & roll Doctor", "Two Trains", "Atlanta", "Sailin Shoes", and medley cuts "Cold Cold Cold/Dixie Chicken/Tripe Face Boogie" and "Spanish Moon/Skin It Back". ✨✧ Little FeatLittle Feat ... CD
Warner, 1971. Used ... $4.99
The first album from the great, freewheeling, genre-defying Little Feat! This album, like all the others from Little Feat, isn't easy to pigeonhole – rolling from sun-toasted country rock to roadhouse-y blues and beyond – in a way that feels perfectly right and natural. It's not as out there as a few of the later albums, but it's certainly among their best! Titles include "Snakes On Everything", "Strawberry Flats", "Forty Four Blues/How Many More Years", "Crack In Your Door", and "Takin My Time". CD

The second album from Little Feat – and it's a great one! Loose roadhouse bluesy and country rock-styled songs – infused with their own weirdness! This is one of those great examples of a band that not only loved, but could play down home American music of many kinds – and add their own personal craft and idiosyncratic charms to whatever they touched. Includes "Easy To Slip", "Cold Cold Cold", "Triple Face Boogie", "Sailin' Shoes", "Cat Fever", "Texas Rose Cafe" and more. CD

Little Feat's third, and maybe best their album – the adventurous country rock, soul, boogie blender Feats Don't Fail Me Know! Up Above, 2005. Near Mint- ... $9.99
A great track from Jurassic 5 – backed up live by the whip tight and funky Dap Kings! There's little we can say about the sound that probably doesn't come to mind the second you hear the names of the parties involved – and the song is wonderful. The rearward mic mastery of the J5 (who themselves are old pros now) and the ever more insistent JBs-by-way-of-Daptone funk of the Dap Kings – a foolproof formula and a most unexpected surprise team effort! 12-inch, Vinyl record

✨✧ Lawrence Marable Quartet feat James ClayTenorman ... CD
Jazz West/Universal (Japan), 1956. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
The only album to ever feature drummer Lawrence Marable as the leader of a group – and a cooking little hardbop set that showed the world that LA wasn't just a source for cool jazz in the 50s! The record is quite different than anything you'd hear from Chet Baker or Shorty Rogers – much more a Blue Note or Prestige-styled session, thanks in large part to the bold work of James Clay on tenor – who's noted here in the title, but is also an undeniable force in the music, and part of a wave of Texas talent that was really helping to transform the Cali sound in the 50s. Other players include the great Sonny Clark on piano – making a strong pre-Blue Note appearance – and the equally great Jimmy Bond on bass. Titles include "Airtight", "Easy Living", "Minor Meeting", "Marbles", and "Three Fingers North". CD

✨✧ Little BrotherMinstrel Show (Amended Album) ... LP
Atlantic/ABB, 2005. Near Mint- 2LP ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
Little Brother transitions to the majors with their soulful underground sound intact – and deliver an effort that in the best moments improve upon the already classic Listening LP! It looks like this just isn't going to go over with the TRL crowd, despite the Atlantic logo. The soul sample vibe in general has seeped back onto the pop charts thanks to Kanye, but the prolific 9th Wonder's brand is of a much grittier stock, providing a rock solid, emotional soul foil for the rhymes of Phonte and Big Pooh. Honestly, as ubiquitous as 9th's production presence continues to be, there's still really no one else out there like Little Brother – which is another reason to celebrate. Like the golden era work by the prime movers of the Native Tongues, the Wu, and Organized Noize collectives, LB's sound is an instantly identifiable, singular signature that you just can't bite. Don't expect to hear a better full length hip hop album on a major label in '05. Tracks include an intro & outro feat Yahzarah, "Beautiful Morning", "The Becoming", "Not Enough", "Slow It Down" and "All For You" feat Darien Brockington, "Cheatin'", "Lovin It" feat Joe Scudda, "Watch Me", "Sincerely Yours", "Still Lives Through", "We Got Now" feat Chaundon and more! Cinematic hip hop soul from Anderson.Paak named after a seaside city west of Los Angeles, CA – but it's not Malibu, it's the stunning follow up Oxnard – a little looser, more diverse, and ultimately just as impressive set from this still rising talent! The uber-impressive guest list including Kadhja Bonet, Norelle, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop, Dre, Pusha T, J Cole, Q-Tip and more but this is the sprawling Anderson.Paak show all the way, his distinctive blend of Cali sunshine and nighttime music and mood, his gritty-smooth voice so masterfully going back & forth from singing to rhyming, the production breathtaking from the stripped down beats, bass and vocals focused tracks to grander and more densely layered material. India ArieAcoustic Soul (special edition 2CD set) ... CD
Motown, 2000. Used 2CD ... $8.99
An incredible debut – and the birth of a genre! India Arie burst upon the Neo Soul scene with this sweet little set a few years back – and her career's been burning up ever since! The set's got all the best elements of some of the best indie soul of recent years – sweet beats, honest vocals, and warm instrumental touches – but the best aspect is the "acoustic soul" use of guitar to give some tracks a slightly folksy feel – one that sets India apart from some of her contemporaries with a really personal approach! The whole thing's great – overflowing with wonderful tracks that include "Video", "Brown Skin", "Back To The Middle", "Part Of My Life", "Always In My Head", and "Nature". CD also features a bonus Stevie Wonder dedication – "Wonderful"! The 2CD anniversary edition includes a bonus CD featuring rare remixes and a live track: "Video" (DJ Dodge rmx), "Video" (Urban Wolves/Dream Team rmx feat Super Cat), "Brown Skin" (Bedroom Rockers radio rmx), "Brown Skin" (Mind Trap mix), "Strength, Courage & Wisdom" (rmx) and "Strength, Courage & Wisdom" (Live from Paradiso). Not really the house of ages – given that most of these cuts are so rare, they're only making their first appearance here – but a great little collection that reminds us that there's still so much to discover in the funky underground of the last few years of the 20th Century! Jeremy Newell really knocks it out of the park with this one – and comes up with a deep, soulful collection of house tracks from the farthest reaches of the scene – either work that only appeared on very obscure singles, or didn't even make it past tape back in the day – leaping forth here with a wickedly groovy sound that's more than worth the wait. Titles include "Take Me Higher" by Jimi Polo, "I Promise (more beats for passion mix)" by Mark Rogers, "Keep On Pressing (KOT orig mix)" by Sean Grant, "More I Get" by Teleport feat Russell Patterson, "Yo Razor" by Arts & Craft with Razor Cain, "Don't Run Away" by Soul Dhamma, "When I See You (tight voc)" by Frank Youngwerth with Ernie, "Freak It (Tony Humprhies inst mix)" by Johanna, "Mainline (Roger S Ego trip mix)" by Tribal House, "We Can Make It (unreleased dub)" by UBQ Project, and "Deeper (Benji Candelario's deeper than deep unreleased mix)" by Susan Clark. VariousJon Savage's 1972 to 1976 – All Our Times Have Come ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 70s. New Copy 2CD ... $19.99 24.99
Writer Jon Savage is maybe best known for his work on the early years of punk in England – and here, Savage steps back just a bit – to contextualize the rise of the new music in all sorts of other styles that were bubbling up in the mid 70s! Part of the set is a pathway to punk – especially on some of the glam and power pop cuts that clearly point the way ahead – but there's also a nice mix of hard rock, a bit of prog, and even some catchier numbers that really fit the feel of the package – and show what a wonderful mix of modes was taking place in the mid 70s – a great wake up call to anyone who thinks that things were dead until punk came along! The 2CD package is overflowing with surprises – 44 tracks, with notes from Savage as well – for titles that include "So Far" by Faust, "Hey Joe (version)" by Patti Smith, "Kings Of Speed" by Hawkwind, "Third Uncle" by Brian Eno, "After Eight" by Neu, "Easy To Slip" by Little Feat, "Girl From Germany" by Sparks, "End Unkind" by Grin, "Andy Warhol" by Dana Gillespie, "Yang Yang" by Yoko Ono, "Vicious" by Lou Reed, "She Means A Lot To Me" by Smyle, "When My Baby's Beside Me" by Big Star, "One Of The Boys" by Mott The Hoople, "Max's Kansas City 76 (part 1)" by Wayne County, "Cherry Bomb" by The Runaways, "Train Train" by Count Bishops, "I Don't Mind" by Dr Feelgood, "Slow Death" by Flamin Groovies, and "You Really Got Me" by Hammersmith Gorillas. Small (France), 2001. Used ... $3.99
The Brazilian vibe continues to spread worldwide, as a host of French and European producers go to town on a great set of tracks tinged with the sound of Brazil! This one's a lot more open-ended than some of the other sets on the market with a similar approach, in that the tracks don't necessarily focus on the dancefloor, so much as they expand the groove for a wider variety of experiences. Of course, there's still more than a few toe-tappers on the set – very much in the best style of work on Compost in a similar vein. Titles include "Brazil.com" by Isolee, "Non Fatiguing Natural Silk" by WR, "Ibis Vermelho" by Rom, "My Little Brazilian Pony" by Dr Rockit, "Tridade" by Alex Kid feat Jerome Badini, "Jelba" by Russ Gabriel, "Obrigado" by The Deal, "Bahia Blues" by DJ Spinna, "Tiu Ba La Quieba" by Boyz From Brazil, and "Kotu Rete" by Mental Remedy. ✨✧ Sons Of ChamplinLoosen Up Naturally/The Sons/Follow Your Heart ... CD
Capitol/BGO (UK), 1969/1971. New Copy 2 CDs ... Out Of Stock
All the greatest moments from the Sons Of Champlin – packaged together here in one sweet set! Loosen Up Naturally is heavy rocking, with some nice drums – the kind of record that's kept the Sons in more crates than you'd think over the years! The set's a massive 2LP jammer that really overflows with niceness – often done in a heartfelt, blues-tinged rock style that's got traces of Little Feat and The Steve Miller Band – but the album's best remembered for the few tunes that have some nice funky changes, like the drums and bass on "Rooftop", or the jazzy scatting riffing sound of the 15 minute track "Freedom", or the hard jamming organ and horns in "Hello Sunlight". Other tracks include "Everywhere", "1982 A", "Black & Blue Rainbow", and "Get High". The Sons is the second album from The Sons Of Champlin – a record that actually has the group shortening their name to The Sons, but expanding their sound past the jamming bluesy roots of their debut! The record's got a tightness that brings a bit of jazz into the mix – not much, in a way that's blended with folksy instrumentation in a really gentle way – fleshing out acoustic guitars with a bit of horns, vibes, and other nice touches that give some of these tunes a much more timeless feel than you'd think. The album's a bit sparse on notes, but someone's doing a great job with the arrangements here – putting more of a high-concept spin on the record, yet still retaining the personal feel of the group. Titles include "Why Do People Run From The Rain", "It's Time", "Country Girl", "You Can Fly", "Love Of A Woman", and "Boomp Boomp Chop". Follow Your Heart is a further deepening of the sounds of The Sons – already great on the group's first 2 albums, but here taking a harmonically polished mode that refines their groove even more – and which makes the album's tunes come off totally great! There's a compressed, slightly jazzy feel to some of the work here – one that has the vocals losing the rasp of before, and going for a sweetly crackling sound that's still never too overproduced, and which has a lovely sense of personal presence. At times, we almost hear echoes of some of Todd Rundgren's best solo work, but with more of a group sort of sensibility – and we're really surprised that this album hasn't had a longer life, or why it hasn't at least been rediscovered as a brilliant pop treasure from the early 70s! Titles include "Follow Your Heart", "Children Know", "Before You Right Now", "The Child Continued", "Well Done", and "Beside You". CD

Archie SheppComplete Remastered Recordings On Black Saint/Soul Note (Sea Of Faces/Down Home New York/Little Red Moon/California Meeting) (4CD set) ... CD
Black Saint (Italy), 1975/1984/1985. New Copy 4CD ... $32.99 41.98
A relatively small slice of the long and storied career of tenorist Archie Shepp – but a great one too, and a set of records that marks some of Shepp's more spiritual modes at the time! The package might well be worth it alone for the classic Sea Of Faces – a great little set from Archie Shepp – one of his strongest of the 70s, and a real return to the kind of spiritual jamming he was doing at the end of his time with Impulse Records! The album's well-known for it's great track "Song For Mozambique" – a spare and righteous number that features Bunny Fox singing in a sweet spiritual mode, while Charles Greenlee and Shepp recite chants over the jamming grooves of the band. Fox also sings on the mellow and soulful "I Know Bout The Life", and the Shepp group picks up a straight but hard mode on Cal Massey's great track "Lookin For Someone To Love". The extended jammer "Hipnosis" takes up all of side one – and it's a great little groover that builds nicely with a comping rhythm, yet which gives the band some nice room to solo in an exploratory fashion. Down Home New York is an overlooked killer from Archie Shepp – a set that almost recalls some of the spiritual moments of his later Impulse work, and which definitely has him moving past some of the straighter sounds of this period in his career! Things are never too outside or free, but there's a balance with straightness that's really great – so that when the rhythms are gentle, Archie might really take off in an edgey solo – or when the grooves have more force, he might hang inside with a soulful core energy, holding the whole group together. There's some great use of electric bass on the date – played by Saheb Sarbib – and other players include Charles McGhee on trumpet, Ken Warner on piano, and Marvin Smitty Smith on drums. Players vocalize a bit at times – in an older Shepp way – and titles include "Down Home New York", "May 16th", "Down Home New York", "Straight Street", and "The 4th World". Little Red Moon features some nicely spiritual currents too – with a group that includes Enrico Rava on trumpet – on titles that include "Naima", "Impromptu", "Whisper Not", and "Little Red Moon". California Meeting is a live set from the west coast – featuring some very long tracks with George Cables on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Eddie Marshall on drums – plus bluesman Royal Blue on one track too. All four albums come in a box, in tiny recor-style sleeves! CD

Jasmine (UK), 1950s/Early 60s. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
That's Billy Bland, not Bobby Bland – a really great singer who's got a wonderful range of material – equally able to sing jump blues, R&B, and even a bit of New Orleans soul – all of which is featured in this excellent collection of his work for the Old Town label – plus a few rare cuts for the Imperial label too! Billy cut most of these tracks at the end of the 50s and start of the 60s – after he'd spent time singing in the bigger groups of Lionel Hampton and Buddy Johnson – where he learned the care that comes to singing in a jazz based environment, and probably developed the powerful lead that really shines through here! In true Old Town style, there's a mix of modes throughout – especially as the work moves into the 60s – but Bland's able to shine with it and has this amazing, arching style of singing that should have made him huge. The package begins with 4 cuts that have Billy in the group The Bees – then moves into another 28 tracks that feature the singer solo – on titles that include "Uncle Bud", "Do The Bug With Me", "Pardon Me", "Harmony", "Snatchin Back", "I Want To Be Loved", "Chicken In Basket", "The Fat Man", "Chicken Hop", "Grandmaw Gave A Party", "Sweet Thing", and "How Many Hearts". TCB, Early 70s. Near Mint- ... $24.99
Early 70s issue of a record recorded for the Warwick label in the early 60s – mostly led by Curtis Fuller, and under the name Soul Of Jazz Percussion. The record is a strange batch of soul jazz tracks that features a number of different groups with players like Fuller, Waldron, Little, Donald Byrd, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers, Pepper Adams, and others – all playing soul jazz tracks with lots of added percussion. The percussion takes the form (mostly) of booming drumming which augments the deep grooves of the tracks. Most of the tracks on this one have been pulled together to emphasize the sound of the trumpeters – and tracks include "Ping Pong", "November Afternoon", "Call to Arms", and "Wee Tina". Contours & Dennis EdwardsJust A Little Misunderstanding – Rare & Unissued Motown 1965 to 1968 ... CD
Motown/Kent (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $13.99 19.99
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Motown, here comes a set to open your ears and blow your mind all over again! The set unearths a huge amount of rare work by The Contours – the rollicking group who gave Motown a sweet album and handful of singles in the 60s, but who also recorded a lot of other work that was never issued at the time – including a sweet array of tracks that feature a young Dennis Edwards as their lead vocalist! Edwards is best known for his work in the Temptations – but these tracks predate that time, when Dennis was brought in to give fresh focus to the ailing Contours – and lent his strong lead vocals to their massively grooving sound. The package features a whopping 26 tracks – 14 issued here for the first time ever, and a lot more pulled from only collections of rare Motown releases – and titles include "Determination", "I'll Turn To Stone", "I Like Everything About You", "Can't Do Without Your Love", "Come See About Me", "I Grow Deeper In Love Every Day", "Our Last Rendezvous", "Which Way To My Baby", "Need Your Lovin", "What's So Good About Goodbye", "Sunny", and "I'm Here Now That You Need Me". Jackie De ShannonMe About You/Laurel Canyon/Put A Little Love In The Heart/To Be Free ... CD
Imperial/BGO (UK), Late 60s. New Copy 2CD ... $16.99 19.99
Four classic albums from Jackie DeShannon – all in a single set! First up is Me About You – sophisticated Jackie at her best – working with great arrangements from Jack Nitzsche and Nick DeCaro – both cats from the California scene we can really trust for "cut-above" pop work like this – music that goes way past the simple sounds of DeShannon's start – into cool adult territory that really makes the album great. Jackie's vocals are surprisingly soulful in the setting – even more so than before – and the tunes include lots of gems, including versions of Van Dyke Parks' "High Coin", John Sebastian's "Didn't Want To Have To Do It", and Tim Hardin's "Baby Close Its Eyes". Also includes "I Keep Wanting You", "Me About You", and "Nicole". Next is Laurel Canyon – heady work from Jackie DeShannon's later years in 60s pop – an album with themes and styles that go way beyond her earlier recordings – as you might guess from the hip Laurel Canyon reference in the title! Jackie's working here in a mode that's much more strongly in a singer-songwriter style than before – with arrangements and backings that are a lot more organic, and less pop-tuned than ever – almost in a Laura Nyro approach on some numbers. As usual, a good portion of the tracks were written by Jackie herself – including "Holly Would", "Come & Stay With Me", "LA", "Too Close", and "Laurel Canyon" – and the album also features a few well chosen tracks by other writers too, like "Bitter Honey" by Paul Williams & Roger Nichols, "I Got My Reason" by Barry White, and "You've Really Got A Hold On Me" by Smokey Robinson. Put A Little Love In Your Heart is quite possibly the last great hit from singer Jackie DeShannon – an album built around the righteous spirit of the title track – filled with really wonderful original tunes penned by Jackie and soul singer Jimmy Holiday! The album may well be the best to explore the space between pop and soul that often characterized Jackie's work – and the overall sound is somewhat similar to some of Dusty Springfield's best pop/soul work from the same stretch. 10 of the album's 12 tracks are originals by Holiday and DeShannon – all set to soaring orchestrations by James Langeford, which often have a pronounced influence from the sound of Atlantic Records in the late 60s! Titles include "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "You Are The Real Thing", "River Of Love", "Movin", "You Can Come To Me", "You Have A Way With Me", and "I Let Go Completely". To Be Free is an interesting little record – with kind of a crossover California soul feel overall – recorded with Rene Hall arrangements that echo a few rootsy modes at times, mixed in with fuller orchestrations that step a bit back towards Jackie's earlier years on Imperial – a surprisingly nice blend, with a fresh sound for the 70s. The album features a number of great tracks co-written with Jimmy Holiday – a fellow Imperial talent – and titles include "Mediterranean Sky", "Sooner Or Later", "What Was Your Day Like", "Livin On The Easy Side", "Brighton Hill", and "When Morning Comes Again". Eric Dolphy & Booker LittleMemorial Album – Recorded Live At The Five Spot ... CD
Prestige/OJC, 1964. Used ... $8.99
Part 3 to the Five Spot recordings from Eric Dolphy – issued here as a "memorial" to Booker Little, even though Little was still alive for the recording! The album features especially searing work from Dolphy, and was part of a series of recordings that set a whole new standard for live jazz recording. The record features Dolphy going even farther out than on his studio sides from the time – as the record features very long tracks performed by a crack group that includes Booker Little on trumpet, Mal Waldron on piano, Richard Davis on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums. Despite the length of the tracks, Dolphy isn't as far out as on later European live recordings – but the performance is a great example of his inventiveness within a mainstream structure, and the modernist tendencies of both Waldron and Little shine very brightly in the set. The concert was one of Little's last (and greatest) recordings – and titles include "Number Eight" and "Booker's Waltz". CD

Verve, Mid 60s. New Copy 4LP ... $72.99 79.99
Four Christmas classics in one package – two from Verve, two from Chess Records! First up is the album Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Swinging Christmas – a wonderful Holiday album that's stayed fresh for years! Ella's got a perfect style to interpret these numbers – working with Frank DeVol and Russ Garcia in a set of lightly jazzy versions of Christmas favorites like "Sleigh Ride", "Jingle Bells", "Winter Wonderland", "White Christmas", "Frosty The Snowman", and one of the best versions of "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" ever recorded! The Sound Of Christmas album by Ramsey Lewis is a classic – and probably one of the best-selling Christmas jazz albums of all time! Ramsey and his classic trio with Redd Holt and Eldee Young serve up a tight set of grooves based around Holiday favorites like "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", "Winter Wonderland", "Here Comes Santa Claus", "The Christmas Song", and "Sleigh Ride" – and also carve out a few nice originals like "Christmas Blues" and "The Sound Of Christmas". Side one features the trio on its own, and side two features added arrangements by Riley Hampton – swirling around to expand the groove even more! Christmas 64 – also issued as Christmas Cookin – is as cookin a Christmas album as you'll ever find! Jazz organ giant Jimmy Smith works with Billy Byers to craft some sublime instrumentals that have his Hammond interpreting Christmas classics like "We Three Kings", "White Christmas", "Silent Night", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". If you know Jimmy from the time, you know that he can really make tracks like these groove nicely – and take them to places you never expected! Last up is the album Have Yourself A Soulful Little Christmas, from guitarist Kenny Burrell – on which he grooves nicely and gently over arrangements by Richard Evans, perfectly crafted in that soul jazz mode of his 60s work for Chess – not Kenny's most challenging format, to be sure, but proof that he often works better in a more structured environment than a freer one. Titles include "Away In A Manger", "My Favorite Things", "Little Drummer Boy", "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", "Merry Christmas Baby", and "Go Where I Send Thee". LP, Vinyl record album

Jewell Gospel TrioMany Little Angels In The Band ... CD
Gospel Friend (Germany), Mid 50s. New Copy ... $16.99 19.99
An essential collection of rare material by this important female gospel trio of the 50s – a group who's not only known for bringing a style to the music that was ever bit as great as male group gospel of the pre-soul years – but who also are the initial early home to later soul superstar Candi Staton! As you can tell by the cover image, the girls are quite young – at least on many of these recordings – but this isn't kiddie music at all, as there's a deeply soulful style of singing that's very mature, and which instantly sets fire to these messages of spirit – with a vibrant style that usually just features some romping piano in the lead, alongside dynamic vocals. The lineup shifts a bit, but Candi is on most of these recordings – which also saw the light of day on Excello as singles – and the set also features a few tracks from later years, with Shirley Ann Lee on vocals. Titles include "Many Little Angels In The Band", "At The Cross", "Rest Rest Rest", "Too Late", "Sin Is To Blame", "It's All Over Me", "My Faith Is In Thee", "I Looked Down The Line & I Wondered", and "Somebody's Knocking At Your Door". Bainbridge, 1960. Very Good+ ... $14.99
A killer from trumpeter Booker Little – one of the last few records that Book cut before his early death, and one of his only ones as a leader! The album features an excellent soulbop quintet with Wynton Kelly and Tommy Flanagan on piano, Scott LaFaro on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums – working with that dark, sharp edge that always seemed to characterize Little's sessions – kind of an added fire he always brought to the studio when working as a leader. Little's trumpet has some of those great modern tones he blew with Max Roach – and the album's got some great little tracks like "Bee Tees Minor Plea", "Opening Statement", "Minor Sweet", and "The Grand Valse". Excellent stuff all around – and a record that would have been bigger, had it been issued on a larger label! LP, Vinyl record album

Little AnnDetroit's Secret Soul (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
Brilliant soul from the Detroit underground of the late 60s – a full set of work by vocalist Little Ann, issued here for the first time ever! You might recognize Ann's name from her appearance on a few of the Ace/Kent Records issues of material by Detroit producer Dave Hamilton over the years – and the work here all comes from those classic collaborations with Hamilton – trapped on tape for many years, always contemplated as a possible Little Ann album – but only issued in full all these many years later! The groove here is as offbeat as some of Dave's other great work – not nearly as tight, or uptight, as Motown music – and instead, done with a sly undercurrent of darkness on most numbers, even the mellower ones – almost that earliest mix of Detroit styles that you get on pre-fame singles from Westbound Records artists. Ann's vocals are nice and lean, and slide right into the mix with ease – heartfelt enough to grab us right away, yet without any obvious cliches as well. Titles include "What Should I Do", "Who Are You Trying To Fool", "The Smile On Your Face", "Stand Together", "I'm Doin All Right", "Lost A Lover", "That's All I want From You", and "I Got To Have You" – plus the unissued versions "Possession (master edit)", "Deep Shadows (multi mix)", and "Sweet It Out In The Shed (master tape)". PLUS – this CD features 9 more instrumental versions of the tunes by the Dave Hamilton Band – most issued here for the first time ever – plus three more alternates of album tracks! CD

Funky 70s Little Richard – very much in the spirit of his Rill Thing album, although a bit more polished! The album features production and arrangements from New Orleans soul legend Bumps Blackwell – who first handled Richard way back when – and the record's sort of divided half and half between tracks that have a 70s funky feel, and others that are going back for more of an older styled retro rocking groove – yet not nearly as much so as on Richard's previous Reprise album. Titles include "Nuki Suki", "The Prophet Of Peace", "Thomasine", "Second Line", and "It Ain't What You Do It's The Way How You Do It". Amazing sounds from one of the all-time greats – the legendary Little Willie John – not only a key inspiration to James Brown, but one of the formative forces in soul music at the start of the 60s! The material here was cut by King Records at the height of its R&B years, but it also stretches forth towards something new, too – a deeper, more expressive sound that really blows us out of the water, even all these decades later – vocals that are incredible, and virtually a blueprint for the style that would come to be known as deep soul in later years. The package features 17 tracks in all – all gems from those years before Little Willie John was incarcerated – titles that include "Home At Last", "All Around The World", "Need Your Love So Bad", "Sleep", "Walk Slow", "Spring Fever", "Leave My Kitten Alone", "Let Them Talk", "Tell It Like It Is", "Talk To Me", "Letter From My Darling", "Heartbreak", "Do Something For Me", and his famous version of "Fever". And as with that set, the keyboards are balanced by the sharp, raspy tones of Greg Tuohey on guitar – a player who almost gets key-like tones from his instrument at times, using it sparely, and with a nice sense of resonance that really helps shape the mellow grooves of the sound! ✨✧ Houston PersonLittle Houston Person On The Side (32 Jazz pressing) ... CD
32 Jazz, 1980s/1990s. Used ... $7.99
A little Houston Person on the side – but more than enough to make up a main course too! The set features Person playing tenor on a host of albums he produced for Muse Records in the late 80s and 1990s – mostly dates issued under other players' names, but also featuring a few that include Houston as the leader, too! Person's solidly soulful tenor is razor-sharp by this point in his career, but possibly even more important is his powerful force in the studio – working on all these sessions to keep the soul jazz fire of the 60s burning strong – at a time when Muse Records was one of the only holdouts to still keep putting out classic music like this! Other players include Groove Holmes on organ, Ron Bridgewater on tenor, Cecil Bridgewater on trumpet, Jimmy Ponder on guitar, Teddy Edwards on tenor, Benny Green on piano, and Jack McDuff on Hammond – and titles include "Blue Seven", "Sweet Slumber", "When Sonny Gets Blue", "Broadway", "Equinox", "Laughing At Life", and "Late Night Lullaby". A classic set of early jazz recordings by Nina Simone – one of her first albums ever, but already with an approach that's quite different from other singers of the time! Nina's singing a fair bit of standards here, but she brings a deeply personal approach to the material – inflecting the tunes with gospel-inspired soul, and showing some very slight folksy touches – of the sort that would come in more heavily on later records, but which is already shining pretty strongly here! Nina accompanies herself on some mighty soulful piano – with bass from Jimmy Bond and drums from Al Heath – on titles that include "Plain Gold Ring", "Good Bait", "He Needs Me", "Don't Smoke In Bed", and "I Loves You Porgy". Sure, there's some roots of older jazz traditions – but Sonny manages to make the whole thing uniquely his own – hitting these moments that are crisp and modern, yet soulful and personal at the same time – really sparkling with work from a quartet that features Jimmy Jones on piano, Aaron Bell on bass, and Charlie Persip on drums. Takagi's got these rich, soulful, thoughtful lines on his instrument that really seem to set the tone – and so many of the corners and edges of the recording are filled in nicely by the reed work of the others – leaving the drums almost as an afterthought at times – or maybe a thoughtful sonic element that's applied with just the right amount of sensitivity to never break up the interplay of the reeds as they come together in air! A very cool little package – one that comes in a 10" record jacket, features a 10" record, and also a bonus booklet of notes and a CD with lots more music too – all to document the ultra-rare Oak Records label – a small company that put out some real killers at the end of the 50s! Fantasy, 1975. Used ... $9.99
Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami". A really unique little album from Cannonball's all-great late years at Capitol – a session that features some strong influences from Brazilian music – "The Happy People" – and production from the legendary David Axelrod! The mix makes for a really unique little record – a set that isn't really bossa, but isn't regular Cannonball funk either – kind of a special hybrid of the two! Airto plays on the set, and contributed the great groover "The Happy People" – a long bit of funky samba that features George Duke on electric piano, and percussion and vocals by Airto himself. The rest of the album's pretty darn great too – with some long tracks that have a more open-ended groove than the usual Cannon funk – featuring more piano by Duke, percussion by Airto and King Errison, cornet by Nat Adderley, and guitar by David T Walker. Monty's Caribbean roots were never a secret, and although they came out in musical modes over the years, this record may present them the most strongly – although with instrumentation that also echoes some 90s electric jazz elements too. The set features Alexander on piano, keyboards, and even a bit of melodica – and the great Ernest Ranglin is in the group on guitar – on titles that include "Moonlight City", "Crying", "Love Notes", "Sneaky Steppers", "Regulator", and a cool "Exodus" medley of both the original film theme, and the Bob Marley song of the same name! The vibe's very much in the best Verve/Impulse takes on the bossa – done with a clear California influence, which keeps things cool and breezy – and which also pushes Almeida past his sometimes-staid style on guitar. A sweet little album from Laurindo Almeida and his "Bossa Nova All Stars" – not a group of Brazilian musicians, and instead a hip set of LA players who really help make the set sparkle! There's a bit more jazz here than on some of Laurindo's other Capitol records of the time – a great 60s update to the groove he first forged in the 50s with Bud Shank – featuring even more swinging rhythms, inventive instrumentation, and a slightly larger group with players who include Jimmy Rowles on organ, Howard Roberts on guitar, Bob Cooper on tenor, Don Fagerquist on trumpet, Justin Gordon on flute, and Shelly Manne, Chico Guerrero, and Milt Holland on percussion! The use of organ is especially nice – a warm wave of sound on top of some great bossa rhythms – and titles include "Naked City Theme", "Teach Me Tonight", "Desafinado", "Mr Lucky", "Theme From Route 66", and "One Note Samba". Long Hair (Germany), 1974. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
A different combo than usual for the German scene of the early 70s – a group who were maybe a bit more straightforward than some of their Krautrock contemporaries – really working some great hard rock fuzz on their solos, alongside a female lead singer who's got a pretty bold style! This debut set was originally pressed by the band themselves, in a print run of only 300 copies – and got little play outside of the Bonn scene which they called their home. All these many years later, it's a lost hard rock nugget that really stands apart on its own – with tracks that include "Student's Idyll", "Outcasted", "Jeff The Fool", and the twenty minute "Rare Girl". Reissue also features bonus tracks – "Sky Drive", "Don't Hang Around", and "Is It Real". LP, Vinyl record album

Ashbury Stabbins Duo (Roy Ashbury/Larry Stabbins)Fire Without Bricks ... CD
Bead/Corbett vs. Dempsey, 1977. New Copy ... $12.99 15.00
An overlooked gem from the British free jazz scene of the 70s – a set issued on the Bead Records label, and one that got very little circulation at the time – but which is equally as mindblowing as work from the period on labels like Ictus and Ogun! The duo here features Roy Ashbury on drums and percussion, and Larry Stabbins on soprano and tenor – working in this free, open space, but on tracks that are often shorter than album-length improvisations – which allows the players to stop a minute, take a breath, and move into these nicely varied moments of spontaneous creation! You might know Stabbins from later 80s work on more groove-oriented records – but here, he's a tremendousimproviser, with a sense for creative reedwork that might well rival his contemporary Evan Parker. Titles include "Puff", "Formants Of The Deep", "Wych Elm", "Fire Without Bricks", "Rough Cut", and "Maldoror". CD

✨✧ Chet AtkinsComplete RCA & Columbia Christmas Recordings (Christmas With Chet Atkins/East Tennessee Christmas/bonus tracks) ... CD
Sony/Real Gone, 1961/1983. New Copy 2CD ... $23.99 24.99
A pair of Holiday albums from Nashville guitar legend Chet Atkins – back to back in a 2CD set, complete with a huge amount of bonus material too! First up is the classic Christmas With Chet Atkins – a sweet strummy Christmas album from the great Chet – a set that's filled with guitar-based tunes that have a special Holiday feel – some of which have warm vocal passages from the Anita Kerr quartet! We always love Chet on RCA during the classic years, but his warm sound is especially nice for the Holidays – a sort of cozy, cuddly approach to guitar that sounds great on these familiar tunes – and which is recorded here with some of those perfect RCA country touches of the early 60s! Titles include "Jingle Bell Rock", "Jingle Bells", "Silver Bells", "White Christmas", "Blue Christmas", "Silent Night", and "Little Drummer Boy". Next is East Tennessee Christmas – an early 80s album from guitar great Chet Atkins – one that really updates his sound for a modern generation, yet still leaves plenty of room for his masterful work on the strings! The record has fuller backings on most tracks – gentle orchestrations that still have the guitar in the lead – and there's also some chorus vocals, in a mode that's kind of an 80s take on the older Anita Kerr Singers approach. Titles include "East Tennesse Christmas", "Let It Snow", "I'll Be Home For Christmas", "Away In A Manger", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", and "Jingle Bell Rock". CD set features LOTS of bonus tracks – including "Christmas Carols", "Jingle Bells", "Greensleeves", "Bells Of St Mary's", "Winter Wonderland (1976)", "White Christmas (1976)", "Jingle Bells (1976)", "Silver Bells (1976)", "Ave Maria", "Winter Walkin", "Sleighbells Reindeer & Snhow", and lots more. Chet BakerChet Baker Sextet ... CD
Pacific Jazz, 1954/1957. Used ... $9.99
A real lost treasure from Chet Baker – an obscure sextet session, originally issued only as a 10" LP! The record features Chet's trumpet in a frontline with Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone and Bud Shank on baritone sax – working through a set of cool modern arrangements by Jack Montrose, Johnny Mandel, and Bill Holman – in a mellow west coast take on the chamber jazz sound of the 50s. The pairing of horns is great, and makes for some evocative changes and tonal colors – on a set list that includes the tracks "Little Man You've Had A Busy Day", "Dot's Groovy", "The Half Dozens", and "Stella By Starlight". Added to these tracks is a similar session from a few years later – one that's arranged by Bob Zieff and which features Chet in an unusual lineup that includes French horn, bass clarinet, cello, and bassoon! These tracks are really wonderful – very moody and evocative, almost in a late 50s dramatic soundtrack mode. Titles include "Ponder", "A Minor Benign", and "Twenties Late". CD

Folkways, 1966. Very Good ... $29.99
A weird little album from the Folkways label – one that features a bunch of 50s-sounding R&B tracks, but packaged almost in an ethnographic style – as if commercial American music was being examined from an outside scientific source! Given that the date of the album is 1966, and most of the work has a sound from a decade before, the approach can be somewhat excused – but honestly, much of the material here would have done great on a commercial label as well – especially some of the more soul-based material. There's a great array of stuff here – and titles include 3 tracks by The Barons – "There's A Dream For You", "Until The End", and "I Can Jerk All Night" – plus "Don't Mistreat Me" by The Queenettes, "Baby Fat" by The Dominoes, "There Is Something About My Girl That Is Mighty Sweet" by Dave Bonds, "The Eel" by Johnny Larand & The Internes, and "A Fool In Love" by Naomi Bradley. Roulette, 1958. Used ... $6.99
Way before Sinatra first grabbed the "Chairman Of The Board" title for his own musical persona, Basie laid great claim to the tag with this tight little album for Roulette! The album's got the 50s Basie band working at the height of their powers – with original compositions written and arranged by Frank Foster, Ernie Wilkins, Thad Jones, and Frank Wess – all of whom play in the bad, along with other all-stars like Freddie Green, Billy Mitchell, and Al Grey. The sound is tight, soulful, and searing Basie all the way through – with tunes that include "Segue In C", "Blues In Hoss' Flat", "Who Me?", "The Deacon", "Half Moon Street", "Mutt & Jeff", "TV Time", "Speaking Of Sounds", and "HRH". Fantastic stuff! Smiley Smile is the issued version of Smile, a classic – and even though some may gripe that it's missing the 50% extra material that was supposed to be on the Smile set, it's still utterly fantastic! Titles include "Vegetables", "Heroes & Villains", "Fall", "Little Pad", "With Me Tonight", and "Wind Chimes". Wild Honey is a great lost album, too – one that has the Beach Boys going back to more stripped-down sounds, but still staying kind of odd and eerie, on tracks like "Let The Wind Blow", "I'd Love Just Once To See You", "Country Air", "Aren't You Glad", and "Here Comes The Night". CD also features 6 bonus tracks, including alternate takes from the Smile sessions! CD

Capitol, Mid 60s. Used ... $6.99
Excellent pre-Pet Sounds work by The Beach Boys! Today is an overlooked gem in the Beach Boys' catalog – mostly because it features some bigger pop singles ("Do You Wanna Dance", "Help Me Baby"). However, there's also some incredible LP tracks with a very Pet Sounds-ish kind of approach to them – tracks like "Don't Hurt My Little Sister", "Please Let Me Wonder", "She Knows Me Too Well", and "In The Back Of My Mind", all of which are essential Beach Boys listening. There's a few other silly tracks on the record, though – as there are on the Summer Days LP – but that one also features a few nice moments, like "You're So Good To Me" and "Let Him Run Wild", both excellent Brian Wilson tunes! Plus, this CD also features 5 bonus tracks – making it a steal of a deal, with 29 cuts in all! CD

The performance has Tony singing with both the trio of Ralph Sharon, and a larger orchestra – making for a good blend of the styles he'd been working on his early albums for Columbia, presented here in a way that has the unreleased tracks put in the same order as they were originally recorded – making for a full concert with hardly any breaks. The set boasts 44 tracks in all – with titles that include "Firefly", "The Rules Of The Road", "Without A Song", "It Amazes Me", "This Could Be The Start Of Something Big", "Lazy Afternoon", "My Ship", "Speak Low", "Fascinating Rhythm", "Just In Time", and "That Old Black Magic". A great little session from Luiz Bonfa – one that features a hip core combo mixed with slightly larger backings – all in a groove that really stands out from other mainstream bossa albums of the 60s! Bonfa's acoustic guitar is set up here with Jerome Richardson on flute, Don Payne on bass, and Helcio Milito on drums – all working in a sound that's lightly touched with occasional bits of strings or woodwinds from Hal Mooney – never too much to over-sweeten the music, and often in ways that underscore the bluer, sadder tones in the music. Bonfa contributed to me great original tunes to the record that really stand out – numbers that include "Avocado", "Moonlight In Rio", "Embolada", "Her Face", "Dream Girl", "Sambalero", and "Zomba" – all of which make the record stand out from other familiar bossa tunes of the time. A brilliant soul album! That's right, we said SOUL album! Bowie was at the height of his Ziggy Stardust fame when this one was recorded – a drastic left-turn in styles, forged during a point in his American tour when he could take a break, head to Philly, plug in at the Sigma Sound Studios, and come up with some fantastic little soul tunes, thanks to help from Luther Vandross! The album sparkles with the best sound of Luther's early work – and you'll hear more than a bit of Luther's work on his own, and his tunes with Gregg Diamond on the set. The great Charles Bradley left this planet all too soon – and although we've got this final album of music to enjoy, it's only a partial consolation for Bradley's early departure! The set's maybe a bit like some of the albums of Otis Redding material that were issued after his passing – in that there's some cuts here that were singles, mixed with unissued songs that really show Bradley on top of his game – working strongly with the Menehan Street Band at a level that really has us wanting more! Some of these tunes have a sharply righteous vibe – maybe even more edge than before from Charles – which makes the whole thing not just a completely essential addition to his catalog, but also a way of pointing towards a future that might have been. Titles include "Can't Fight The Feeling", "Luv Jones", "I Feel A Change", "Black Velvet", "Fly Little Girl", "Victim Of Love (electric version)", "Slip Away", and "Heart Of Gold". The first album in many years from Robertinho Brant – and a really evocative little set, one that more than lives up to its title! There's definitely a soundtrack sort of quality to the tunes, even though most of them are vocal numbers – and they work like little snapshots of life, put together in a way that's got some of the same lightly poetic touches of the Minas Geraes generation – echoes of the work of Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges, with possibly a touch of Edu Lobo in the arranging style as well. Backings often mix a bit of electric and acoustic instrumentation, yet never in ways that are too slick or overproduced – and Brant's breathy presentation of the lyrics really fits the mood of the set. Expansion (UK), Late 90s/2008. New Copy ... $8.99 19.99
The long-overdue release of Inside My Love – a sublime little set recorded by Trina Broussard in the late 90s – originally planned for the So-So Def label, but never properly issued at the time! The album's years ahead of most soul of the time – a great precursor to the Neo Soul explosion that major labels would finally get behind in the 21st Century, but which still left them scratching their heads back in the 90s – and failing to get music this great out to the market. Thankfully, Expansion have helped fix a decade-old mistake – and they're letting Trina's warmly soulful sound sparkle beautifully with this well-done reissue. Broussard's got a wonderfully classy approach to her music – one that's been appreciated in subsequent releases, but which comes through even more clearly here – a great sense of poise that's almost classic in a Phyllis Hyman sort of way. Titles include "Losing My Mind", "Why Do I Feel So Sad", "All I Need Is You", "All Night Long", "Not Around", "Remember Me", "Sailing", "Say You Really Love", and "Inside My Love". James Brown really opens up on this early 70s classic – really showing the world the amazing groove he was crafting with his band – who were let loose to jam in the studio, spinning out some really long grooves – which were then cut down to make this sweet little record! The title cut was a big single for James at the time, but it's presented here in its full 9 minute version – a monstrous jam that's equal to anything on the Payback record, or the JBs albums too – and the album also includes the long two-part take of "Escapism", and another funky gem – "Blues & Pants", which snaps along for a solid 9 minutes too! The album's filled with heavy funk, and the longer tracks allow for plenty of instrumental flourishes from Fred, Maceo, and the other JBs – and honestly, the record is more of a People Records session than a Polydor record from James. Even more amazing – this CD reissue features the full 19 minute version of "Hot Pants" – the unedited jam from the session! CD

A hip little set from Ruth Brown – miles away from her earlier R&B for Atlantic, and much more in the adult, righteous, and contemporary mode you'd expect from the title! The session's one of the key sides from the late 60s Skye Records catalog – and like others on the label, it features Gary McFarland production, and some great small group backings by a group that includes Richard Tee on organ, Billy Butler on guitar, and Herbie Lovelle on drums. Ruth's trials and tribulations are listed in detail inside the notes – and the record was one of the first re-discovery efforts that Brown undertook – a session that was trying to help her pay her dues, and expose her to the same sort of audiences that were lapping up Aretha Franklin at the time, but not giving as much attention to older singers. Tracks are a mix of (then) contemporary numbers and updated older tunes – with titles that include "Yesterday", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Lookin Back", "Try Me & See", "Miss Brown's Blues", "My Prayer", and "This Bitter Earth". An Italian funk double-header – a sweet little set from the end of the 60s, and one that features killer cuts from both Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi! We love either artist on their other own records, but there also seems to be something about putting them together here that makes them even better than before – certainly funkier, as the album's full of the kind of sharp, hard-grooving titles that first made us fall in love with sound library records in the first place! The date of the album's 1969, and both musicians make nice use of psych elements in their instrumentation – adding a bit of fuzz, wah-wah, or trippy guitar in just the right spaces – never going over the top, or getting too indulgent – but just moving in a groove that's tightly jazz funky at the bottom, and maybe a bit freaky at the top. Wonderful work throughout – and titles include "Sweet Beat", "Repetition", "Starter", and "Makkaresh" by Stefano Torossi – and "Wawa", "Motuproprio", "Polyphony", and "Flyer" by Sandro Brugnolini. A fantastic pairing of talents – brought together here in a set of recordings that features way more material than we ever knew the duo recorded! The massive 4CD package is focused on spare duets between drummer Jo Jones and organist Milt Buckner – both American jazz musicians from a slightly earlier age, given a chance to really stretch out in a great way during the early 70s – taken into the studio by producer Hugues Panassie, in a mode that's free from any restrictions or commercial trappings at all! Both musicians can really do a lot with a little – especially Buckner, whose Hammond almost always sounds better without a larger group alongside him – because you can really hear his great command of the keys and pedals, and his amazing ear for a very wide range of sounds. A stunner from Kenny Burrell – one of his most sophisticated and soulful sessions of the 60s! Kenny's working here with the ultra-cool arranger Johnny Pate – best known for his work with Curtis Mayfield, and his 70s soundtrack fame – but a heck of a creative talent when it comes to a jazz session like this! For the record, Pate's created these spare little backdrops – not nearly as full as those penned by Don Sebesky or Claus Ogerman – and with a gentle sort of grooving quality that really pushes Kenny along nicely. Burrell's guitar is very strongly upfront in the mix – working chromatic magic at a level hardly ever matched again on record! Side one features the extended "Asphalt Canyon Suite" – a magnificent tune that's simply sublime – and side two features 5 shorter tracks, "Things Ain't What They Used To Be", "Put A Little Love In Your Heart", "Please Send Me Someone To Love", "Going To Jim & Andy's", and "Sugar Hill". The style is light, laidback, and recorded with a warm tone overall – in a mode that's almost a precursor to the CTI sound of the late 60s. Mike Maineri joins on vibes on one track – and titles include "Wholly Cats", "Rose Room", "As Long As I Live", and "A Smooth One" LP, Vinyl record album
(MGM stereo pressing with deep groove and Van Gelder stamp.)

✨✧ Barbara CarrollBarbara Carroll ... CD
Blue Note (Japan), 1976. New Copy ... $13.99
A cool little set from pianist Barbara Carroll – a player who got her start in the New York scene of the 50s, and served up some excellent work in later years – but who also comes across surprisingly well in this overlooked 70s session for Blue Note! The album's not nearly as electric as others on the label at the time – and instead, Carroll really demonstrates her warm touch on acoustic piano – working with just a bit of bass from Chuck Domanico and drums from Colin Bailey – but often driving the rhythms herself, with her own fluid work on piano! The set also features guest guitar from Dennis Budimir on one track – and titles include "Baubles Bangles & Beads", "Blues For Artie", "At Seventeen", "In Some Other World", and "It Never Entered My Mind". Jimmy Carroll/Red CampSpeed the Parting Guest/Hot-Tempered Clavichord ... CD
Cook, Mid 50s. New Copy Gatefold ... $12.99 16.98
Great work from the legendary Cook label – a full album that combines two earlier 10" albums of experimental sounds! First up is Speed The Parting Guest, a wonderful combination of music and sound effects – very similar to some of the bigger label work from artists like Jack Fascinato or Dean Elliott over at Capitol Records in the late 50s, but an even more sonically-sensitive session done for the smaller Cook imprint! Jimmy Carroll leads an assortment of vibes, bells, harps, toys, percussion, and other odd instruments – all in a weird and playful mix of melodies that almost come across like mini-cartoons in sound! There's not much in the way of larger or conventional instrumentation – which makes Jimmy's work even different than bigger label experiments like this – and the recording quality from Cook really makes all the odd sounds come through with great clarity! Titles include "Happy Little Woodpile", "Tinkle Tinkle Little Bell", "Speed The Parting Guest", and "Hong Kong Local". Next up is The Hot Tempered Clavichord – a session that features mostly clavichord musings from Red Camp – more of a rootsy pianist on other records, but working here on an electrified clavichord – which is a bit like an electric harpsichord in sound, only rougher! The tracks are these cool electric boogie-woogie numbers – and include "Ragout", "Blues In Minore", and "The One I Love". CD
(Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label. Comes with original cover artwork, and the CD also features a PDF file with the original liner notes and other materials from the original record release.)

Betty CarterSocial Call ... LP
Columbia, Mid 50s. Near Mint- ... $6.99
A great little set that brings together some of Betty Carter's rare vocal recordings for the Epic label – including a handful that were unreleased until the issue of this album! There's a total of 11 tracks in the set – with 6 from the Meet Betty Carter and Ray Bryant album, which features piano by Bryant, arrangements by Quincy Jones, and some excellent vocals by Betty. The other stuff's even better, though – as it's arranged by Gigi Gryce, whose cool floating style is a perfect one for Betty's incredible voice. Titles include "Social Call", "Tell Him I Said Hello", "Frenesi", "Runaway", "Thou Swell", "The Way You Look Tonight", and "Tell Him I Said Hello". LP, Vinyl record album

CBS Jazz All StarsMontreux Summit Vol 1 ... LP
Columbia, 1977. Very Good 2LP Gatefold ... $5.99
A really amazing little record – way more than usual for this sort of live recording – given that it features some very unique performances together by artists we've never heard on the same stage otherwise! The premise is simple, but wonderfully effective – in that the album brings together some of the leading lights of the Columbia/CBS jazz stable at the time – a massive lineup of talent from a few key generations in jazz, sounding surprisingly great hear together! All tracks are nice and long – and titles include a brilliant version of "Infant Eyes" by a quartet with Stan Getz on tenor and Bob James on piano; "Fried Bananas" with Dexter Gordon on tenor, Slide Hampton on trombone, Woody Shaw on trumpet, and George Duke on piano; "Bahama Mama" with Bob James on keyboards, Bobbi Humphrey on flute, Eric Gale and Steve Kahn on guitars, and Billy Cobham on drums – and the long jam session tracks "Montreux Summit", "Blues March", and "Andromeda" – which feature work from most of the players above, all working in one large group – plus added flute from Hubert Laws and Thijs Van Leer, percussion from Ralph Maconald, and bass from Alphonso Johnson. ✨✧ Gene ChandlerThere Was A Time (with bonus tracks) ... CD
Brunswick/Solid (Japan), 1968. New Copy ... $13.99
A soaring, burning set from Gene Chandler – completely different than his early hits, and a key point in the transformation of Chicago soul in the 60s! Gene's always had a heck of a great vocal range – and he really gets a chance to use it to best effect on this album of jaunty and groovy little tracks – tunes that bounce around with that majestic Chi-soul style of the late 60s, all produced to perfection by the great Carl Davis! The sound is sublime – a pulling together of so many different strands into one bold, proud sound – sophisticated yet soulful, and with a rhythmic component that really sets the album apart from the pack. And even when Gene's singing tunes that you may know from other singers' hits, he does a tremendous job of transforming them – recasting them into his more mature groove, and managing to funky them up in ways we wouldn't expect! Evidence to this is the album's great version of James Brown's "There Was A Time" – which is followed by loads of other great cuts, including "Cowboys To Girls", "Fooling Around", "Pit Of Loneliness", "Never Gonna Give You Up", and "Laughter To Tears". CD features lots of bonus tracks too, all duets with Barbara Acklin – including "Love Won't Start", "From The Teacher To The Preacher", "Show Me The Way To Go", "Anywhere But Nowhere", "Little Green Apples", and "Will I Find Love" CD

Ray CharlesSpirit Of Christmas ... CD
Rhino, 1985. Used ... $9.99
A great holiday album from Ray Charles – recorded in the 80s, but with a sound that's pretty classic all the way through! Ray's vocals are excellent – with that raspy intimate quality that persists all through his later years – and the sweetly jazzy arrangements work perfectly with the voice to bring new life to old classics like "What Child Is This", "Little Drummer Boy", "Winter Wonderland", and "Santa Claus Is Comin To Town". There's also a few nice obscurer numbers – like the country soul "That Spirit Of Christmas", plus "All I Want For Christmas" and "Christmas In My Heart", which both feature Ray on electric piano. CD also features a bonus cut – Ray & Betty Carter's classic reading of "Baby It's Cold Outside", from 1962. CD

ChieIlha De Sol ... CD
Video Arts (Japan), 2008. Used ... $6.99
Chie's got kind of a washed-out look on the cover of this one, but the album's a warmly glowing little set – filled with gentle bossa colors, and sung with a light and lovely feel! There's a great Japan-meets-Brazil feel to the record – one that's put together from some well-crafted backings that feature lots of acoustic guitar and percussion, then topped by Chie's slightly fragile vocals – which offer a different take on the music than you might get from a Brazilian singer. Arrangements are by Dudu Trentin, Alex Fonseca, and Celso Fonseca – and titles include "Embola A Bola", "A Ilha", "Minha Voz Minha Vida", "Everytime We Say Goodbye", "So Liguei", and "Ate Nao Mais". Citrus SunExpansions & Visions ... CD
Dome (UK), 2020. New Copy ... $15.99 16.99
A great little record from the jazzier side of the Incognito universe – work from the excellent Citrus Sun project of Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick – done with some of the soulful vocal modes of his famous group, but also a lot stronger focus on the instrumentation – with plenty of room for solos, and maybe the use of vocals that you'd find on an old album by The Crusaders! Matt Cooper provides some excellent keyboards – and the set features vocal appearances from Noel McKoy, Valerie Ettiene, Deborah Bond, and Bluey himself – on titles that include nice remakes of "California Soul" and "Expansions" – plus the originals "Diamond In The Sun", "Amando O Velho Mundo", "Hard Boiled", "Hey Now", and "Stay You" – the last of which is a tribute to Leon Ware! John ColtraneColtrane Jazz ... CD
Atlantic, 1960. Used ... $7.99
The title may be a simple one, but the record really marks a key point in John Coltrane's development – an embrace of the newer freedoms allowed to him at Atlantic Records, but in a way that's a bit more subtle than some of his other work for the label! At one level, the record moves at the same groove as Trane's later Prestige years – with rhythm mostly from Wynton Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums – carving out some sharp lines for Coltrane to cascade over on tenor sax. Yet there's also a new sense of darkness here too – one that moves into edgier territory, and which isn't nearly as settled in as before. These qualities sneak out of both original numbers like "Harmonique", "Fifth House", and "Like Sonny" – as well as standards like "My Shining Hour" and "Little Old Lady". And they really come to the forefront on the classic "Village Blues" – the one track that features the new Coltrane group of McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis, and Elvin Jones! CD features 2 bonus alternate takes too! CD

✨✧ John ColtraneComplete Africa/Brass Sessions ... CD
Impulse, Early 60s. Used 2 CDs ... $12.99
Very unusual work by Coltrane – sessions that feature his classic quartet playing in front of larger orchestra backings conducted by Eric Dolphy! The tracks feature Trane leading a group young modernists through a set of larger arranged charts, woven tightly together in a soulful spiritual groove that's similar to some of Max Roach's projects like this from the same time. Players include Booker Little, Eric Dolphy, McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Reggie Workman, and Julius Watkins – and this 2CD set features all of the material that was issued on the first album, plus other tracks that came out during the 70s. There's a total of 8 cuts in all – and titles include "Song Of The Underground Railroad", "Blues Minor", "Africa", "The Damned Don't Cry", and "Greensleeves". CD

✨✧ John ColtraneDakar ... LP
Prestige, 1963. Fair ... $9.99
Darkly brooding work from John Coltrane's early years as a leader on Prestige – a very unique little record that features twin baritone sax support from Pepper Adams and Cecil Payne! Both players are wonderfully hip here – more than enough to match Trane's unique musical vision for the group's format – and the sound of the session is much edgier than some of his other Prestige work – which may be why the label chose not to issue it until 1963, even though it was recorded back in '57. There's a nice roughness here – the same inspirational early sound you'll get on Coltrane's early sides for Savoy or Imperial – and other players include Mal Waldron on piano, Doug Watkins on bass, and Art Taylor on drums. Titles include "Cat Walk", "Dakar", "Route 4", "Velvet Scene", and "Witches Pit". LP, Vinyl record album
(Blue trident label stereo pressing in a purple tinted cover. NOTE – Vinyl has numerous marks and plays with crackles in varying degrees throughout. Cover has pieces of wide reinforced tape holding the seams and spine, bent corners, and aging.)

✨✧ Gal CostaAo Vivo ... CD
Trama (Brazil), 2006. Used ... $9.99
A great little live album from Gal Costa – recorded as part of a concert performance for her Hoje (Today) album, but featuring a fair bit of other work as well! The style here is similar to Hoje – small group instrumentation, relatively spontaneous, with a good undercurrent of jazz – all of which really helps Gal break from some of the stiffer modes of her later years, and hit a warmly wonderful style that's filled with life and joy! The group on stage is relatively small, and the nature of the recording keeps things somewhat intimate – and Gal's vocals are very firmly in the lead throughout. Titles include "Antonico", "Jurei", "Hoje", "Luto", "Juventude Transvida", "Meu Nome E Gal", "Coisa Mais Linda/As Time Goes By", "Mar E Sol/Aguas De Marco", and "Santana". CD
