Lisa OnoBrasil ... CD
Dream Music (Japan), 2014. New Copy ... $32.99
Lovely work from Lisa Ono – one of the first singers of the modern age to return to the genius of 60s bossa, and one of the few to keep getting it right over the years! Here, Lisa sings with studio help from Mario Adnet – that great contemporary bossa talent who's got a key ear for updating instrumentation without ever losing the charm of the past – keeping things live, spontaneous, and with just the right current of sadness – but all without ever just aping the styles of the 60s either. Lisa's voice is wonderful – maybe even better here than on her earlier records – and titles include "Upa Neguinho", "Roda", "Mas Que Nada", "O Cantador", "Lapinha", "Tim Dom Dom", "Sa Marina", "Bossa Na Praia", and "Chove Chuva". CD

Toninho HortaBelo Horizonte ... CD
Think (Japan), 2019. New Copy 2CD ... $36.99
A fantastic return to form for the legendary Toninho Horta – the Brazilian singer and guitarist who first rose to fame in the company of Milton Nascimento at the start of the 70s – then created a tremendous musical legacy of his own! This double-length set has Horta working in some great jazzy territory – that spacious, soulful style that marked all the members of Nascimento's "corner club" from Minas Geraes – an approach that seems to embrace elements of fusion and progressive styles, but give them a warmer, more soulful Brazilian setting – all while never losing any of the sophistication of their inspirations. The set features guest work from Joyce, Joao Bosco, and Lisa Ono – and the group also features Robertinho Silva on percussion, William Galison on harmonica, and Nivaldo Ornelas on tenor sax. Titles include "Dieb", "O Poder De Um Olhar", "Saguin", "Durango Kid", "Paris", "Samba Sagrado", "Aqui O", "Belo Horizonte", "Ceu De Brasilia", and "Meu Canario Vizinho Azul". CD

Curtis AmyWay Down ... LP
Pacific Jazz, 1962. Very Good ... $29.99
An incredible album by one of the best soul jazz reed players to emerge from the LA scene of the 60s! Amy started his career playing R&B-ish organ/tenor material, but by this point, he was really opening up his bag a lot – hitting modalish grooves that showed definite traces of Coltrane, but which were also still firmly rooted in his Texas tenor tradition. This album's one of his rarest, and it features a very young Roy Ayers (billed as Ron Ayers) playing vibes, plus Marcus Belgrave on trumpet, Roy Brewster on trombone, and John Houston on piano. Titles include "Way Down", "Liberia", "Lisa", "Bells & Horns", and "A Soulful Bee, A Soulful Rose". Beautiful! LP, Vinyl record album
(Mono black label pressing. Cover has splitting in the top seam and spine, with a gloss wrinkle in front.)

✨✧ Alessandro AlessandroniOpen Air Parade ... LP
SR/Sonor (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
A gem of a sound library record from one of the all-time greats – and maybe one of the few artists who gave his equal all, whether he was cutting a full film soundtrack, or just a discreet batch of tracks like these in the studio! The music is as groovy as groovy can be – sometimes funky, sometimes slinky – and done in this blend of heavy electric bass, nicely snapping drums, riffing guitar, and some great use of wordless vocals – maybe no surprise, since Alessandroni was the man behind the legendary I Cantori Modern! There's a great sense of variety all the way through – all killer, no filler – and titles include "Vocalisation", "Spiagge Azzurre", "Aliante Giallo", "Ciclamino", "Arioso Spirituale", "Cielo Verde", and "Marmittone". LP, Vinyl record album
