A set of music that was initially inspired by Paul Auster's New York Trilogy – but which takes off in some very weird and wonderful directions of its own! Lisa Mezzacappa
's music isn't nearly as straightforward as some other jazz/
noir projects that have come out over the years – and really creates an individual feel, both in the way the instrumentation is laid out, and in the way that Mezzacappa
constructs the individual compositions. The lineup features the leader on bass and samples – with Aaron Bennett on tenor, Josh Finkbeiner on guitar, William Winant on vibes and percussion, Tim Perkis on electronics, and Jordan Glenn on drums. And while the vibes and tenor sometimes echo an older noir spirit, the other instruments often work against any sort of easy cliche, and write their own sort of urban narrative. Titles include "A Bird In The Hand", "Quinn's Serenade", "Ghosts", "Babel", and "The Ballad Of Big Flora".
