✨✧ Lisa MezzacappaAvant Noir ... CD
Clean Feed (Portugal), 2017. Used ... Out Of Stock
A set of music that was initially inspired by Paul Auster's New York Trilogy – but which takes off in some very weird and wonderful directions of its own! Lisa Mezzacappa's music isn't nearly as straightforward as some other jazz/noir projects that have come out over the years – and really creates an individual feel, both in the way the instrumentation is laid out, and in the way that Mezzacappa constructs the individual compositions. The lineup features the leader on bass and samples – with Aaron Bennett on tenor, Josh Finkbeiner on guitar, William Winant on vibes and percussion, Tim Perkis on electronics, and Jordan Glenn on drums. And while the vibes and tenor sometimes echo an older noir spirit, the other instruments often work against any sort of easy cliche, and write their own sort of urban narrative. Titles include "A Bird In The Hand", "Quinn's Serenade", "Ghosts", "Babel", and "The Ballad Of Big Flora". CD

✨✧ Lisa MezzacappaGlorious Ravage ... CD
New World, 2017. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A beautifully exploratory set of work from bassist/composer Lisa Mezzacappa – and one that draws inspiration from a legacy of 19th century female explorers too! The album's a project that was years in the making – music created alongside video contributions by four different artists, and featuring an ensemble that includes Nicole Mitchell on flute, Kyle Bruckmann on oboes, Cory Wright and Vinny Goila on woodwinds, Michael Dessen on trombone, Tim Perkis on electronics, Kjel Nordeson on vibes, and Myra Melford on piano and Harmonium – as well as Fay Victor on voice, whose presence is in the lead on msot numbers. Mezzaccappa plays bass, alongside Mark Dresser – and the music often has an improvised feel, but with direction that's more evident when Victor's voice works through a mixture of sung lyrics and other sounds. Titles include "Great Green Gloom", "For The Dusky Mourner", "Marianne", "Shut Out The Sun", "City Of Wonders", "Heat & Hurry", and "Make No Plans". CD
