A real cooker from Georgie Auld's years on Mercury – a record that comes across with some "hi fi" dynamics, but which also features a strongly swinging group overall! Auld's playing here with Frank Rosolino, Ray Linn, and Maynard Ferguson – and the mode's a bit like some of Ferguson's albums for Mercury in the same stretch – shorter tracks but with strongly voiced solos, especially on Auld's saxophone – which hangs nicely here between two eras of jazz in its phrasing. Cat Stevens' most soulful moment! Long before he changed his name – and started setting his sights on Salman Rushdie – Cat Stevens decided to atone for the wrongdoings of previous A&M albums with this album! The record still contains a number of Cat's soporific folksy numbers – but it's also got an early instrumental electro track that became an instant hip hop classic! The tune is "Was Dog A Doughnut" – and while the title may signify Stevens' metaphysical crisis at the time, he was at least of sound mind enough not to sing on the track, thus preserving linn-drum groove for posterity! Beautifully introspective work from reedman Emil Mangelsdorff – material that's very different than the sounds he was bringing to the German jazz scene in his youth, and which showcase the mature command he developed over his instruments during the passage of time! The record features material recorded almost a decade apart, but still with a nicely unified vibe – four later tracks that have Mangelsdorff soloing in these tracks that really demonstrate his growing sense of tone – balanced with earlier material that features some slightly different smaller groupings – three trio numbers with Jo Flinner on piano and Gerhard Bitter on bass, and four more with the great Attila Zoller on guitar. Mangelsdorff blows soprano, alto, and flute – and titles include "Phrygian Summer", "Corrina", "Joanne", "After The Snow", "Mezzanine Floor", "Stiner", "Ember", and "Songe Ma Belle". CD

A collection of ultra-rare material from the mighty Black Merda and affiliates – the legendary funk group who mixed in plenty of Hendrix-styled guitar to their grooves – resulting in sound that few other groups can touch! The "Psych Funk" title is very well put – given the mix of heavy guitar, funky bass, and pounding drums – and the vocals are nice and soulful throughout – especially on the few tracks sung by Linnie Walker – although some moments have more trippy, psych-styled phrasing – a bit like early Funkadelic! The set mixes together unissued tracks with alternates of versions on the other Funky Delicacies collection – and titles include alternate versions of the Black Merda tunes "Cynthy-Ruth" and "Reality"; the tracks "People Let Me Know" and "Darn Well", with vocals by Linnie Walker; The Soul Agents' excellent funk version of "Foxy Lady"; and the VCL Veasey tracks "Do Nothing Wrong" and "Original Man". A really great idea for a book on records – and one that's completely different than most that we've seen before! Unlike other books of this nature, which are filled with "essential" or "classic" records – this book is full of flops, or records that never really hit the heights, but which are pretty darn great overall! In the eyes of the authors – and our eyes too – all of these records are under-acknowledged gems – some by big names, others by more obscure artists – lots of which never got their full due at the time.
