✨✧ Alice ColtraneTranslinear Light (with bonus track) ... CD
Impulse, 2004. New Copy ... Just Sold Out!
Mindblowing work from Alice Coltrane – an album of incredible beauty that easily sits with the best of her classic early recordings for Impulse! The album's got a spare, contemplative quality, but it's also never sleepy – and instead steps forth with the tonal building and modal moving styles of classics albums like Ptah The El Daoud and Huntington Ashram Monastery. Most tracks feature a trio or quartet – with players that include Ravi Coltrane on saxes, Jack DeJohnette on drums, and Charlie Haden on bass. Alice plays some great Wurlitzer organ on a few cuts – getting this really wonderful "flat" tone to the instrument, one that almost has the same spiritual undertones as a harmonium. The whole thing's great – far better than we could have expected – and titles include "Sita Ram", "Translinear Light", "This Train", "Blue Nile", "Triloka", and "Crescent". CD

✨✧ Midnight Hour (Adrian Younge & Ali Shaheed Muhammad)Midnight Hour Live At Linear Labs ... CD
Linear Labs, 2019. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Adrian Younge is best known as a studio genius – and he's certainly working in that setting here – but in a live environment, with a larger group – in a way that really shows off a whole new side of his talents! Younge's partner here is Ali Shaheed Muhammad – who plays bass alongside Adrian's keyboards – and the pair work with a core combo that includes alto, trumpet, guitar, and drums – plus a string duo who really give the whole thing a special vibe! The sound is very different than just a regular funk group – and while strings are normally used as an overdubbed add-on for many recordings, it's great to hear them working live here – a perfect complement to the deep ideas that Younge and Muhammad bring to the music. The vibe is a bit like a live David Axelrod session – save for occasional guest vocals from Loren Oden and Angela Munoz – and titles include "Black Beacon", "Better Endeavor", "Do It Together", "It's You", "Dans Un Moment D'Errance", "Bitches Do Voodoo", "Ravens", "Gate 54", and "Redneph In B Minor. Fred Anderson & Steve McCallVintage Duets – Chicago 1/11/80 ... CD
Okka Disk, 1980. New Copy ... $9.99 13.99
An amazing recording finally sees the light of day – a beautiful set of duets between Fred Anderson on tenor and Steve McCall on percussion – both very important players of the second wave of AACM musicians in the 70s, even though both artists never fully got their due! The material was recorded in 1980, not too long before we lost McCall – and the interplay is wonderful, and really represents a shift in the energy of the AACM scene – maybe some influence from the loft jazz world of mid 70s New York, which in turn drew inspiration from late 60s Chicago – but also delivered with a sense of soul that marks Anderson as part of a key lineage of Chicago tenorists that includes Clifford Jordan, Johnny Griffin, and John Gilmore! McCall is great too – a sensitive soul, but a strong force throughout – as the duo improvise on two long tracks, "Within" and "Wandering". CD

Moses BoydDark Matter ... LP
Exodus (UK), 2020. New Copy 2LP ... $29.99
A hell of a record from drummer Moses Boyd – a musician who's fast becoming way more than a drummer! Here, Boyd is in the same "jazz plus" territory of Makaya McCraven – still strongly respectful of his lineage in the music, but also trying very hard to push the whole thing forward, and open up to new sounds and new ears – all in ways that are never commercial or crossover at all! Moses is clearly becoming a force on the London scene to match the collaborative genius of Makaya in Chicago – and although there's no personnel listed on the set, we can hear some fantastic work on saxes, keyboards, and vocals – which are handled by both male and female singers. And although Boyd drums on the set, he's clearly working more as a larger producer/arranger – one who isn't afraid to throw in a few beats from time to time – on titles that include "Yoyo", "Shades Of You", "Stranger Than Fiction", "BTB", "Far Gone", "Nommos Descent", and "What Now". Marion BrownThree For Shepp ... CD
Impulse (Japan), 1966. New Copy ... $18.99
An unbelievable recording! As Archie Shepp made his first album for Impulse a tribute to Coltrane, Marion Brown made his a tribute to Shepp – a wonderful lineage of avant talent in the 60s, stated boldly here, given Brown's amazing talent on the record! The album's filled with hard, soulful playing that goes out, but never too far – like Shepp in his best sixties moments – and Brown's working with a great lineup of players that includes Grachan Moncur on trombone, Beaver Harris on drums, and Stanley Cowell on piano! The tunes include three Marion Brown originals on side one, plus three tracks by Shepp on side two. "Spooks" alone will leave you loving this album for years to come – and other tracks include "West India", "Delicado", "New Blue", and "Fortunato". A brilliant blend of 60s "new thing" playing and 70s underground jazz! CD

Peven EverettEasy Livin' ... CD
Unified/Studio Confession, 2006. New Copy ... $6.99 13.99
Another bold step forward for Peven Everett – easily one of the real front runners in the 21st Century soul scene! The album's got a tighter, more unified feel than even some of Peven's previous work – a confident, almost majestic approach that has Everett's wonderful vocals coming through with real clarity – finally elevated to the level of major stardom that Peven deserves, in a lineage that includes Donny Hathaway, Leroy Hutson, and Roy Ayers! The rhythms are staggered nicely throughout – and include a few more skittish numbers next to the smoother tunes – creating an unsettling vibe that further expands Everett's emotional palette, and which sometimes brings of funk into the mix. And best of all, this album actually seems to be an all-original conception – and not just a label repackaging of one of Peven's home-made records, as was the case with some of his other recent official releases. Titles include "Easy Livin", "See You Tonight", "Sexy One", "Don't You", "Steady Now", "When You Touch Me", "Got To Get Down", and "Put Your Back In It". CD

Von FreemanDedicated To You ... CD
Steeplechase (Denmark), 1993. Used ... $16.99
Von Freeman blows it bold and beautifully here – with just the right sort of sound we first fell in love with when seeing him in small club gigs in Chicago! There's an easygoing soulfulness to Freeman that grabs us right away – but there's also an edge, too – a quality that marks his lineage on a tenor scene that goes back to Johnny Griffin and John Gilmore – and the days when you could play things straight, but still always be inventing as well – never needing to go to the farther reaches, just always working out new feelings, new emotions on the familiar canvas of tunes that gave you plenty of solo space. Of Freeman's few studio recordings, this is one that really gets the sound of his soul just right – that tender feeling and slightly offbeat edge that always made us sit up and take notice. Rhythm is from the comfortable trio of Jodie Christian on piano, Eddie DeHaas on bass, and Wilbur Campbell on drums – and titles include "Four", "There Goes My Heart", "Song For My Father", "There Is No Greater Love", "Dedicated To You", and "My Foolish Heart". Wacoal Art Center/WRWTFWW (Switzerland), 1993. New Copy ... $6.99
One of the more electric albums from Motohiko Hamase – a Japanese artist that we first knew for his jazz recordings, but who really has branched out by the time of this release! There's still plenty of bass in the music – but the instrument is used in fuller, more powerful waves of sound – with all these shades, tones, and textures – elements that might have been used in more subtle ways on an 80s Japanese minimalist recording, but which here take off in directions that have more of that Bill Laswell brooding sense of darkness from the early 90s. Given that aspect, there's maybe a lineage here that also is influenced by electric Miles – but with no trumpet in the mix, the sound is more along the lines described – with titles that include "Chirico", "End Of Legal Fiction", "Invisible City", "Opaque", and "Imagery". Crestview, 1951. Very Good ... $16.99
Lord Buckley's rare early recordings for the Vaya label in LA – groundbreaking sides that predated most comedy albums, and which also had a huge influence on the spoken word recordings of the beat generation! The tracks were recorded live, with Buckley talking in a mixture of jive and gibberish that may well have marked him as the first true hipster on record – and which also puts him in a lineage that's somewhere between Slim Gaillard and Babs Gonzales. Far Out (UK), 2011. New Copy ... $8.99 16.99
Always-lovely work from Sabrina Malheiros – serving up a sublime blend of Brazilian roots and soulful overtones – a style that's easily made her one of the best artists on the Far Out label over the years! Sabrina's got a family lineage that traces back to Azymuth – and the music here has the similar blend of fusion instrumentation, earthy Brazilian percussion, and soaring American soul that you'll find in the best classics by that group – all with the added special spark that comes from her sweet vocals too! Production and arrangements are by Daniel Venom Maunick, who brings in a slight dose of Incognito soul too – really making for a record that's quite possibly the best we've heard from Sabrina so far – and that's saying a heck of a lot. Titles include "Lirio De Venus", "Bobeira", "Opara", "Candeia", "Fragil", "Can't Hide Love", "Primeira", and "Paranoia". CD

Very dynamic stuff, balancing improvisation and a linear vibe masterfully! Players include Jim Hobbs on alto, Timo Shanko on bass and Luther Gray on drums. Loren OdenAdrian Younge Presents Loren Oden – My Heart My Love – Instrumentals ... LP
Linear Labs, 2020. New Copy ... $23.99 24.98
A record that should really just be billed under the name of Adrian Younge, and maybe not Loren Oden – as the set features all of Adrian's sweet instrumental backings for Oden's vocals – a cool deep funk set that's got all the classic currents of some of Younge's other productions in recent years, but with a nice twist too. There's some surprising contemporary elements going on, too – warm currents of 21st Century soul, tripping along in a gentle Linear Labs sort of way – beats on the backburner, as the keyboards often carry as much rhythm as melody – with the right sort of gently bubbling vibe to come through strongly on titles that inlcude include "All Roads", "Galaxies", "Addicted", "Queen", "My Heart My Love", "Somber Sonnet", and "Timeless Answers". A famous broadcast performance by this legendary bassist – but one that's presented here in a version that features 40 minutes of music that never aired on the original program! This well-recorded set captures Jaco Pastorius at his height – after a huge step forward in sound and style in the 70s – to a time when he was exploring so many new ideas, and new ways of expressing himself on the electric bass – an instrument that he completely transformed for generations to come! The group's a large one – Jaco's Word Of Mouth ensemble – with Bob Mintzer on tenor and soprano sax, Randy Brecker on trumpet, Peter Erskine on drums, and Don Alias on percussion – plus Othello Molineaux on some mighty cool steel drums. There's a larger horn section, too – and Toots Theielmans plays a bit of guest harmonica – and most tracks are nice and long. Seminal sounds from Placebo – one of the hippest electric groups going on the European scene of the early 70s, thanks to some great keyboards and electronics from the legendary Marc Moulin! Placebo's sound here is a unique approach to funky jazz – one that certainly draws from the electric modes of the American scene, and without any of the jamming elements of other Euro fusion groups – but there's also a touch of rockish inflection at points too – especially in the way the rhythms have a tightly pulsating groove. There's none of the indulgence of prog, but there's definitely a lineage going on somewhere in the mix too – and in addition to Moulin's keyboards, the group also features great horns from Nick Fissette, Alex Socrier, and Richard Rousselet. There's a whole generation of jazz musicians who wouldn't have been caught dead liking the music of Michael Jackson – and then there's a huge batch of artists who grew up with MJ, and find his grooves an undeniable influence on their sound! That's definitely the case here, as this all-star group do a wonderful job of reworking classics from a few different spots in Michael's career – all given fresh arrangements by group members who include pianist Edward Simon, vibist Warren Wolf, alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon, trumpeter Sean Jones, and tenorist David Sanchez! Chris WareRusty Brown (hardcover) ... Book
Pantheon Books, 2019. New Copy ... $6.99 35.00
We love the work of cartoonist Chris Ware, but we maybe love his Rusty Brown character even more than the rest – as Rusty's an inveterate collector, with the sort of special drive that's plagued us all of our lives! Yet the depth of this volume really matches Ware's more famous character Jimmy Corrigan – as the long narratives here trace out the "origins" of Rusty, and follow him through years past – with a sensitivity and lingering sadness that's beautifully delineated in the kind of artwork that sets Ware apart from anyone else we can think of. The production quality is beautiful – hundreds of pages in full color, laid out sideways to replicate a book of vintage comic strips – which furthers the Ware exploration of the Rusty Brown aesthetic. ✨✧ Adrian Younge with The DelfonicsAdrian Younge Presents The Delfonics ... LP
Wax Poetics, 2013. Near Mint- ... Just Sold Out!
A really stunning little record – way more than we expected – and our expectations were already pretty darn high! The album's contemporary – and features legendary Delfonics lead singer William Hart working with younger studio whiz Adrian Younge – who gives the whole thing the feel of some lost Delfonics tapes from the early 70s! Younge really unlocks the darkness that was always present in the group's music, but didn't always show up this well – that great sound they were hitting after the initial three LPs, when the themes got even stranger, and the trio moved way past simple love songs and pop hits. Hart's vocals are tremendous – instantly recognizable, and often supported by harmonies that keep them in just the right sort of old school focus – a sound that leaves us breathless throughout, and which makes for a really incredible album. Titles include "True Love", "To Be Your One", "Stand Up", "Party's Over", "Lover's Melody", "Life Never Ends", "Just Love", "So In Love With You", "Silently", and "Enemies". LP, Vinyl record album

A vision of the future of avant garde jazz – recorded in 1966, and one of the most groundbreaking titles on the legendary ESP label! Saxophonist Marzette Watts is a player who hardly ever gets his due – but was part of the key new wave of younger players on the east coast scene of the 60s – fitting well in a lineage of Albert Ayler, Archie Shepp, and other important forces in avant jazz at the time. This album's one of the few he ever recorded – along with an important session for Savoy – and is mindblowing right from the start – a fresh blend of new thing ideas with the freer, looser modes of the ESP scene – handled perfectly by a well-chosen group that features Byard Lancaster on alto and flute, Clifford Thornton on trombone and cornet, Sonny Sharrock on guitar, Karl Berger on vibes, Juni Booth and Henry Grimes on bass, and JC Moses on drums. Watts plays tenor, soprano, and bass clarinet – and titles include "Backdrop For Urban Revolution", "Ia", and "Geno". CD

Elision Fields, 1978. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
Experimental mastery from Terry Riley – a live recording captured in Paris in 1978 – at a point when he was working in a realm of his own invention, leading up to his benchmark Shri Camel LP! Riley is working here with his Yamaha portable combo organ that he had modified – feeding stereo signals into the digital delay. We'll spare you any more technical jargon, as what's important is the aural atmosphere, and it's a heavy one! There's always a pillow of droning organ tones at the outer edges, chiming bits on the fringes, and Middle East inspired accents at the core, the most linear connection to the coming Shri Camel album. The mood builds from start to finish – and the sound is amazing for a live recording! 10 untitled pieces and it runs pretty close to an hour. CD

✨✧ John Carter & Bobby BradfordSelf Determination Music ... CD
Flying Dutchman/BGP (UK), 1970. New Copy ... Out Of Stock
A landmark recording – one of a handful of early documents of the avant garde LA scene, featuring a nimble quartet headed up by the inventive frontline of John Carter on reeds and Bobby Bradford on trumpet, over the fluid rhythm team of Tom Williamson on bass and Chicago expatriate Bruz Freeman on drums! Carter and Bradford's energetic approach followed its own line of development, much in the way that other small cells of improvisers were developing their own take on the "new thing" in the post-Coltrane/Coleman environment of the late 60s and early 70s throughout the country. The compositions unfold in a way that implies both multi-linear improvisation and composed events, but blurs the line between the two, all the while played with a great deal of fire and few of the intellectual abstractions of other free players! Titles include "The Sunday Afternoon Jazz Blues Society", "The Eye Of The Storm", "Loneliness", and "Encounter". CD

Madlib invades Blue Note! He gets free reign of the catalog for this mix of sampler genius and live band interpretations, too, as/with Ahmad Miller, Yesterdays New Quintet, Malcolm Catto, Medaphoar, and others from the Stones Throw camp. This one's truly a conceptual triumph, if there ever was such a thing – one of the greatest hip hop producers alive, given carte blanche with the source beats of the century! Madlib's Blue Note crates are heavily weighed in the mid 60s through mid 70s electric beats that often get the shaft in mainstream jazz round-ups, but floor the beathead world into overdrive. Re-interpretations, remixes, and revisions are spliced seamlessly with the source samples, creating a whole new world where hip hop and late model live funk not only co-exists with classic Blue Note jazz, but it actually draws a linear transition between the 2 genius art forms. Beautiful stuff – if the album isn't the most original idea to come along all of these years into the hip hop & jazz underground, it's certainly one of the most perfectly realized projects of its kind, ever! It's one for the time capsule – easily one of Madlib's masterpieces, and pure funky sample wizardry by any standard! Includes Monk Higgins' "Slim's Return" interpreted by Ahmad Miller and DJ Lord Such on cuts, "Donald Byrd's "Distant Land", "Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Bounce", Yesterday's New Quintet's adaptation of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints", Madlib Invazion's "Funky Blue Note", the Joe McDuphrey Experience take on Horace Silver's/Herbie Hancock's "Peace/Dolphin Dance" and lots more. Adrian Younge's plastered his name on the front cover of this debut from Angela Munoz (why does he always do that?) – but the set is definitely a strong calling card for the lady herself – who steps out here with a strength that might well make her a key underground soul talent in years to come! Munoz has a voice that's clearly wonderful at the core – soulful, but very personal – with a range that might belie the individualism she brings to her music at first, but which really draws you into the captivating lyrics of the tunes. And yes, production by Younge is great, as is the musical help from Ali Shaheed Muhammad – but dang it, let the lady stand forth on the cover on her own – as she's a great singer, with plenty to offer.
