Richard EvansRichard Evans ... LP
Horizon, 1978. Very Good+ ... $8.99
One of the few albums as a leader by Chicago Soul genius Richard Evans – a key late 70s effort that perfectly sums up all his genius on record for countless other artists! The album's got a warm, smooth groove that's totally great – one that builds tremendously from the sophisticated soul advances on the Chicago scene of the 70s – and which features bits of jazz, soul, and even Brazilian influences gliding wonderfully through the mix! There's a sense of pride, power, and confidence here that graces every single number – and in a way, the album's almost like a Quincy Jones effort from the same stretch – with Evans' showcasing a new side of his talents, and his collaborators, on every different number. Linda Williams sings vocals on the groovy "Capricorn Rising", Eddie Harris plays on "Do Re Me For Soul", Billy Durham sings on "Windy City", Tower Of Power guest on "Educated Funk", and the group offers up a remake of Evans' Soulful Strings classic "Burning Spear". Al GreenTokyo Live ... CD
Cream/Ultra Vybe (Japan), 1978. New Copy ... $13.99
A tasty double-live set from Al Green – one that has him working through longer versions of tunes than you'd hear on his studio albums, and really doing great in front of an appreciative Japanese crowd! The overall approach here is a bit more modern than on some of his older Hi albums – as the band uses the extra space to make things a bit more uptempo and really push the groove – but Al's vocals still hold the whole set together nicely, especially on the numbers where he lets loose a bit more. Linda Jones is one of the backup singers on the set – and titles include "Belle", "Let's Get Married", "Love & Happiness", "I Feel Good", "Dream", "God Blessed Our Love", "You Ought To Be With Me", and "Tired Of Being Alone". Brandee YoungerSoul Awakening ... CD
Brandee Younger, 2019. New Copy ... $14.99
Really beautiful work from Brandee Younger – maybe one of the few artists to mix together jazz and harp since the generation of Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane! The record's even hipper than Brandee's last – richer, deeper, and with these strongly spiritual currents that get great support from an excellent lineup that includes Ravi Coltrane on tenor, Sean Jones on trumpet, Dezron Doglas on bass, and EJ Strickland on drums! The music is sharp and focused, but also has a wonderful sense of flow – perfect for Younger's deft fingers on the strings of the harp – which, as in the hands of Ashby or Coltrane, is completely transformed from its usual instrumental role. Titles include "Soulris", "Games", "Save The Children", "Soul Awakening", "Linda Lee", "Respected Destroyer", "Blue Nile", and "Love's Prayer". CD

VariousDave Godin's Deep Soul Treasures Vol 5 ... CD
Kent (UK), Late 60s/Early 70s. New Copy ... $12.99 18.99
A long-overdue entry in this amazing series – a set of music that's gone on to be a genre unto itself, and which stands as a tribute to the song-picking genius of the great Dave Godin! The music here is a really special breed of soul – sounds that start out in the heart-worn style of southern work of the 60s, but which also expand to encompass other modes of very expressive singers – music that definitely lives up to the "deep" in the deep soul title! Godin's been gone from the planet for a number of years, but the set list is based on suggestions he had when compiling the earlier versions of the famous series – and Dave lives again in the notes, which include an interview with the soul music expert by Jon Savage. But even without the words, the music is more than enough – on titles that include "Without Love" by Ronnie Taylor, "Where Is The Party" by Helena Ferguson, "Dead" by Carolyn Sullivan, "Who Knows" by Soul City, "I Will" by Lattimore Brown, "Right Here Is Where You Belong" by Jerry Washington, "Can't Last Much Longer" by Betty Harris, "Standing At The Crossroads" by Eddie & Ernie, "What Can I Do Without You" by Linda Jones, "It's Too Late For Tears" by Rene Bailey, and "All I Want Is You" by Zilla Mayes. VariousLaurie Records Story Vol 3 – Girls & Girl Groups ... CD
Ace (UK), Mid 60s. New Copy ... $11.99 18.99
Great girl group grooves from Laurie Records – one of the powerhouses of the genre during the 60s! The set brings together some of the best that Laurie had to offer at the time – not just hits, but some great lesser-known gems that really make the package stand out from other girl group sets on the market – a wonderful collection of both rock and soul cuts that show there's still plenty left to discover if you know where to dig! Tracks are pulled not just from the main Laurie label, but also from other imprints too – including the Rust, Providence, and Harmon labels – and as usual, Ace has done a bang-up job with the notes and images – helping us learn plenty about the music while our ears are enjoying the sounds. Titles include "Hanky Panky" by The Summits, "Shy Guy" by The Charmers, "You're The Love Of My Life" by Brenda Lee Jones, "Stop Look & Listen" by The Chiffons, "He's Mine" by Linda & The Lindettes, "Your Big Mistake" by The Del-Rons, "I Still Love You" by Les Girls, "He's My Dream Boy" by Marie Antoinette, "How Can I Be Sure" by Gloria Dennis, "Circus Girl" by Bernadette Carroll, "Whenever A Teenager Cries" by The Jeans, "Nothing Went Right" by Lorrie Darnell, and "Your Life Is Gone" by Reparata.
