Bruno SpoerriTeddy Bear/Lilith ... CD
Finders Keepers/Cache Cache (UK), 1978. New Copy ... $4.99 16.99
Two rare soundtracks from the quirky Bruno Spoerri – both of them a very cool blend of jazzy reeds and lots of electric touches! Teddy Bear is from the early 80s, and is one of the later records we've heard from Spoerri – a set that definitely bears the pedigree of its time, through cool use of Lyricon, Prophet, and Emulator keyboards! Bruno often blows his sax into the keys, then processes the reedlines in a very cool way – with a style that's more soulful than usual keyboard styles of the time, given the acoustic roots of the sounds – yet which still has a great 80s vibe overall. Things are almost in the offbeat style of some of the instrumentals from the German AtaTak scene of the time – and titles include "Too Much Smell", "The Silliest Song", "Reanimation Of A Filmmaker", "Small Talk", "The Arrest Of Groucho", and "Baby Baby". Lilith is from a few years before, and has a more conventional 70s approach – great electric piano lines over tight rhythms, with Bruno handling both tenor and Lyricon – on tunes that mix sound library funk with some of the weirder, more offbeat sounds you might know from other Spoerri soundtracks. Titles include "Singing In The Dark", "Winding Down", "The Dance", "Prepare For The Show", "Train", "Going To Work", and "Fanfare". CD

✨✧ Kenyon HopkinsLilith ... LP
Colpix, 1964. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A subtle score by Hopkins – not as all-out jazzy as some of his other work from the 60s, but with some nice moments that mix moody orchestrations with straighter jazz-based numbers. The film's a dark little one that starred Warren Beatty, Jean Seberg, and Peter Fonda – and Hopkins really captures the mood well with tracks like "Lilith & Vincent", "First Love", "Because I'm Mad", "Twangy Tavern", "Rationale", "Magic World Of Lilith", and "Puppets & Horses". CureThree Imaginary Boys (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Fiction/Lilith, 1979. New Copy (reissue)... $29.99 34.99
Perfect early work from The Cure from the heart of the late 70s post-punk era – music that's short, sharp, and surprisingly powerful after all these years! The trio here has all the best sharp edges that made them a real standout in the post-punk years – and Robert Smith reminds us that although his vocals have gone onto be the stuff of legend, it may well have been his guitar work that first got him noticed! Really just guitar, bass, and drums – but used extremely well – on titles that include "Another Day", "Subway Song", "10:15 Saturday Night", "Accuracy", "Grinding Halt", "Three Imaginary Boys", "It's Not You", and "So What". Caetano VelosoCaetano Veloso (1969) (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Philips/Lilith (Italy), 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $28.99 32.99
An album of pure genius – easily one of the greatest Brazilian albums ever, and a landmark set from the Tropicalia years! There's a brilliance here that's hard to describe accurately – quite possibly because the young Caetano Veloso is experimenting with so many new ideas, the album explodes with fresh energy on each new track! Offbeat bossa runs into weird production effects, subtle psychedelia, and heartfelt singer/songwriter material – all arranged by the mighty Rogerio Duprat, and featuring guest work from Gilberto Gil on guitar. The range of work here is tremendous – from the political "Empty Boat" to the fantastical "Lost in the Paradise", through other classics that include "Irene", "Os Argonautas", "Carolina", "Alfomega", "Chuvas De Verao", "Objeto Nao Identifcado", "Atras Do Trio Eletrico", and "Marinheiro So". ✨✧ Emitt RhodesAmerican Dream ... CD
A&M/Lilith (Russia), 1971. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A real classic from Emitt Rhodes – easily one of the most unusual voices in music of his time! Rhodes has this really dreamy approach to the vocals – a mode that feels much more tuned towards late 60s pop/psych, but which comes across here in a very different setting – some echoes of more open 70s singer-songwriter modes, and some slight touches of Americana, too – a really unique setting that makes the record one of his most compelling ever! All tunes are originals, and titles include "Your A Very Lovely Woman", "In days Of Old", "Til The Day After", "Holly Park", "Mother Earth", "Pardon Me", and "Textile Factory". CD

✨✧ VariousTropicalia – Ou Panis Et Circencis ... CD
Philips/Lilith, 1968. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
A landmark album – not just in Brazilian music, but in all modern music in general! The set's a legendary manifesto for the Tropicalia movement in Brazil – and features key works by all the leading musical luminaries in the movement – including a few later stars who are heard here at their most edgey! The work is as groundbreaking today as it was at the end of the 60s – a brilliant testament to the power of artists to really break down boundaries in art and music, and find a way to mix the political with the popular at the same time. Titles include a fantastic version of Gal Costa and Caetano Veloso singing "Baby", the "Tres Caravelas" duet between Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, Gil's great reading of "Bat Macumba" with Costa and Veloso, Nara Leao singing "Lindoneia", Os Mutantes performing "Panis Et Circenses", Gilberto on "Geleia Geral, Caetano doing "Coracao Materno, and Rita Lee, Gal Costa, and Caetano Veloso singing "Enquanto Seu Lobo Nao Vem". Brand new remastering – approved by Caetano Veloso himself! CD

✨✧ Jimmy SmithHoochie Cooche Man ... CD
Verve/Lilith (Italy), 1966. Used ... Out Of Stock
Jimmy pays tribute to an earlier generation of R&B – in a hard-wailing set of soul jazz, done with backings from the legendary Oliver Nelson! A few tracks feature vocals by Jimmy, in a rough bluesy style, and others have some harmonica by Buddy Lucas – in a raspy, hard-wailing mode that still fits in nicely with the jazzier style of the album. Jimmy's organ is right up front on most numbers – recorded with that full, dynamic sound that makes so many of his Verve albums a treasure – and the best numbers have a more contemporary 60s groove alongside the older bluesy roots. Grady Tate plays drums – surprisingly funky at times – and other players include Melba Liston and Tom McIntosh on trombones, Billy Butler on guitar, Bob Cranshaw on Fender bass, and Joe Newman on trumpet. Titles include "Hi Heel Sneakers", "TNT", "Boom Boom", "Ain't That Just Like A Woman", and "One Mint Julep". CD

✨✧ Caetano VelosoAraca Azul (clear vinyl pressing) ... LP
Philips/Lilith (Italy), 1972. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the weirdest, wildest albums Caetano Veloso ever recorded – a highly experimental session that shows that his ties with the avant art world were still plenty strong on his return to Brazil! Despite a goofy cheeseball photo of Veloso on the cover in a bikini, the sound on this one is waaaaay out – with weird avant garde vocal bits, choppy instrumentation, and wild shifts in style that make his Tropicalia albums almost seem like pop hits! As usual, Caetano's vocals are superb, especially as he slides from experimental tunes into straighter songs – like the title cut "Araca Azul", and Milton Nascimento's "Cravo E Canela". Proof that the Brazilian intelligentsia was still alive and well in the post-Tropicalia years – with other titles that include "De Palavar Em Palavra", "Julia/Moreno", "Epico", "Viola Meu Bem", "De Conversa", and "Sugarcane Fields Forever". ✨✧ Caetano VelosoCaetano Veloso (1971) (colored vinyl pressing) ... LP
Polygram/Lilith (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
One of the greatest albums ever from Caetano Veloso – a rare all-English language set, recorded in London during the years of his exile! The post-Tropicalia set is a fair bit different than any other Veloso album we can think of – not just because of the English language, but also because the approach is somewhat gentle, and almost folksy at times – a real change from his experimental modes of the late 60s, and easily his most personal statement to date. The tunes are incredibly beautiful – filled with themes of loss and longing that no doubt come from his separation from Brazil – and although a few tunes feature light strings from Phil Ryan, most of the backings are relatively light, and almost acoustic. Titles include the classics "Shoot Me Dead", "If You Hold a Stone", "Maria Bethania", "In The Hot Sun Of A Christmas Day", and "London, London" – plus a cover of "Asa Branca". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ FaustFaust (180 gram pressing) ... LP
Lilith (Italy), 1971. New Copy (reissue)... Out Of Stock
Arguably one of the greatest German albums of the early 70s prog era – the stunning debut of Faust, and a record beyond compare! The group his hitting here amazingly on all burners – stretching out long, rhythmic jams – working out weird production techniques – and blasting noisy bits when you least expect it – all in a style that's as playful as it is experimental, as charming as it is un-self-indulgent (if such a word actually exists!) The music is as mysterious as its original clear sleeve, clear vinyl package – and titles include "Miss Fortune", "Why Don't You Eat Carrots", and "Meadow Meal". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Os MutantesOs Mutantes (1968) ... LP
Polydor (Brazil), 1968. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
A landmark album from late 60s Brazil! This is the first – and the wildest – album by this legendary group that was one of the founding forces of the Tropicalia movement – a brilliant musical statement that easily ranks with some of the most groundbreaking late 60s American work by The Velvet Underground, Captain Beefheart, or The Stooges! The music is a wonderful blend of 60s rock and early MPB – hard-driving with plenty of guitars, but also produced with beautifully baroque touches that echo through simultaneous albums by Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa – both of whose 1969 albums are strongly resonant with this one. In fact, Caetano contributed a number of tracks to the album, including "Panis et Circenses", "Bat Macumba", "Trem Fantastma", and his great "Baby", which is done fantastically here. Great stuff all 'round! LP, Vinyl record album
