Chet BakerAlbert's House ... CD
Beverly Hills/Liberation Hall, 1973. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
A lost little gem from Chet Baker – recorded with a gentle, homey feel that we really like! The album's not one of the standouts in Chet's catalog, but it's got a personal, almost intimate quality that we find really compelling – almost a broken soul sense of playing, with Chet stumbling a bit amidst relaxed backings by a small combo that includes Barney Kessel on guitar, and Paul Smith on piano and organ. The tunes are nothing fancy, but often quite nice – and the set includes a number of original tunes written by Steve Allen that get past the obvious Baker numbers. Titles include "Albert's House", "Farewell San Francisco", "Time", "How Dare You Sir", "End Of The Line", "Life", and "Sunday In Town". CD

John Fred & His Playboy BandJudy In Disguise – With Glasses ... CD
Paula/Liberation Hall, 1967. New Copy ... $12.99 14.99
Very groovy work from John Fred & The Playboy Band – a group who are probably best remembered for their one big hit, but who have a heck of a lot more to offer! Fred and the group were a powerhouse from the southern circuit of the mid 60s – one of those combos who were mostly rock, but could hit the floor with a sound that was also steeped in soul – one that helped them cross over big to a wide range of party-hearty crowds at the time, with some deep Louisiana and Texas roots in their music! Titles include their classic "Judy In Disguise" – plus "Hey Hey Bunny", "She Shot A Hole In My Soul", "Little Dum Dum", "Tissue Paper", "We Played Games", "Off The Wall", "Out Of Left Field", and "Agnes English". Young-Holt UnlimitedYoung-Holt Unlimited Plays Super Fly (yellow vinyl) (2022 Record Store Day Drop) ... LP
Paula/Liberation Hall, 1973. New Copy ... $21.99 24.99
The last-ever album from this legendary duo – and a set that's maybe their funkiest record too! Of course, that's probably no surprise, given that they're playing the Curtis Mayfield tunes from Superfly here – great tracks that make for a really wonderful setting for the pair's highly rhythmic style – Eldee Young on bass and Isaac Redd Holt on drums – plus great Fender Rhodes lines from pianist Ken Chaney! The set also features a bit of congas from Derf Reklaw, and organ and guitar as well – and the whole thing's a long overdue follow up to the funky electric jazz style of their earlier album Oh Girl, on Atlantic. Titles include great takes on "Freddie's Dead", "Give Me Your Love", "Pusher Man", and "Superfly" – plus a few of the group's own numbers, like "Hey Pancho" and "Mystical Man" – as well as a super-dope cover of "People Make the World Go Round". ✨✧ Lennie TristanoLennie Tristano/New Tristano ... CD
Atlantic, 1955/1961. Used ... Just Sold Out!
A double-length set of work from one of the greatest pianists of the 50s – both of his Atlantic albums together on a single CD! First up is the self-titled Lennie Tristano, from 1955 – darkly imaginative work from the great Tristano – and one of the few full albums he ever cut as a leader! The record features the incredible track "Turkish Mambo" – which has Tristano overdubbed 3 times in this dark modal way that's totally amazing, and which will hook you into his playing immediately! A number of other tracks feature a quartet with Lee Konitz – always a good match for Tristano – and a few others have a great trio that's completed by Peter Ind and Jeff Morton. Tracks include "Requiem", "East 32nd", "You Go To My Head", and "Line Up". New Tristano is an incredible record by Lennie – one that features him playing solo piano, but in a way that's so inventive, so creative, so pyrotechnic, that Atlantic Records had to include text on the back cover saying "No use is made of multi-tracking, over-dubbing, or tape-speeding." The album's also one of the last (the last?) that Lennie ever cut – and although many other players are kind of faltering in last sessions like this, Lennie's sounding better than ever – ready to take on a realm of new challenges in the 60s. Titles include "Love Lines", "G Minor Complex", "Becoming", and "Deliberation". CD

✨✧ Vibration Black FingerCan You See What I'm Trying To Say ... CD
Jazzman (UK), 2020. Used ... Temporarily Out Of Stock
The deepest work to date from Vibration Black Finger – a group headed up by UK drummer Lascelle Gordon, and who effortlessly mix together acoustic jazz elements and other sonic elements – very much in the best spirit of some of their contemporaries on the London scene! Gordon's drums and percussion are at the core of each number – but the instrumentation shifts a fair bit as the set goes on – with flute, piano, keyboards, reeds, and bass from a variety of different guests – including Nat Birchall on tenor and Julie Kjaer on alto and flute! There's a few vocal moments – courtesy of the great Maggie Nicols and Ebony Rose – but most of the set is instrumental, and titles include "Soul Fire", "Only In A Dream", "Persia & Cornelius", "Twelve Wire Byrd", "Gutkind's Dream", "Can't You See What I'm Trying To Say", "Acting For Liberation", and "Empty Streets".
