✨✧ Lennie Tristano & Warne MarshIntuition ... CD
Capitol, Late 40s/1956. Used ... Out Of Stock
Classic modernist jazz from the 50s, long out of print in the US, and issued here in a beautiful CD that includes a huge amount of tracks and good notes on the material! Half of the CD is a reissue of Warne Marsh's rare Jazz Of Two Cities album, a killer two-tenor workout with an icy cool feel, and Marsh and Ted Brown heading up the frontline. Compositions were contributed by Brown, and by Ronnie Ball, who plays piano on the album – and tracks include "Smog Eyes", "Ear Conditioning", "Dixie's Dilemma", and "Quintessence". The other half of the material is culled from Lennie Tristano's late 40's recordings for Capitol, sessions that are often cited as the birth of the cool jazz sound, and which feature key members of the Tristano school, like Lee Konitz, Billy Bauer, and Marsh – who gives some of his earliest recorded work on the tracks. Titles include "Intuition", "Digression", "Crosscurrent", and "Marionette". Beautifully haunting stuff, and material that we're very excited to see reissued again! CD

✨✧ Warne MarshWarne Out ... LP
Interplay, 1977. Very Good ... Out Of Stock
Wonderful work from tenorist Warne Marsh – a player we almost like more in these later years than we do during the famous 50s recordings that brought him to everyone's attention! The setting is nice and loose, and very open – just Marsh on tenor blowing with the bass of Jim Hughart and drums of Nick Ceroli – players who allow Warne lots of room to really open up and take on some new ideas! There's still a bit of crispness in Warne's horn, but there's also this marvelous "mouth" there as well – a real sense of texture that comes from the way he handles the reed, adding in lots more humanity than the early years, and keeping things compelling throughout. The sound is sublime – and titles include "Loco 47", "Liner Notes", "Warne Out", "Duets", "Ballad", "Warne Piece" and the Tristano number "Lennie's Pennies". LP, Vinyl record album
(Vinyl has a press flaw that clicks a bit on "Ballad". Cover has ring and edg wear, bumped corners, and some yellowing from age.)

✨✧ Lennie TristanoLennie Tristano – Personal Recordings 1946 to 1970 (6CD set) ... CD
Mosaic, Late 40s/1950s/1960s. New Copy 6CD ... Out Of Stock
An incredible collection of music from the great pianist Lennie Tristano – and maybe the first-ever set to truly get at the range of genius he could express on the piano! Given that Tristano only made a small amount of records during his too-short career, yet also left a major impact on the field of modern jazz – this set really documents the full span of everything that Tristano had to offer – pulled from a wonderful range of his own recordings, all of which appear here for the first time! These aren't casual solo recordings done in the basement – and instead, the package brings together a mixture of studio, live, and even television performances – all with a different spirit on each of the CDs in the set! One of the most revelatory is the final CD – which features a number of tracks in a "free session" in 1948 - with Tristano on piano, Lee Konitz on alto, Warne Marsh on tenor, and Billy Bauer on guitar – coming together with an amazing sound throughout. That same disc also features a superb 1962 live date at the Half Note – with Konitz on alto and Zoot Sims on tenor. CD1 is wonderful too – a selection of live material with the tremendous Billy Bauer on piano – a player, like Tristano, who was instrumental in shaping the sound of his instrument in modern jazz during the postwar years. CD3 features live performances by a sextet that includes Konitz, Marsh, and Bauer – plus Arnold Fishkin on bass and Jeff Morton on drums. CD2 features beautiful solo performances recorded from the early 50s through 1970. CD4 features trio session, most with Peter Ind on bass – while CD5 features different trio and duo material, but with Sonny Dallas on bass. The set is impeccably done – in cooperation with Tristano's family – and given the wealth of material, the whole thing may well have doubled his recording catalog in the process, while also really illuminating so many different aspects of his career! Rare work from Lennie Tristano – some brilliant recordings made at the Half Note in 1958 and 1964, all of which feature Warne Marsh in the group on tenor sax! The first half of the set features Lennie's piano with Marsh's tenor – in a cool quartet with Henry Grimes on bass and Paul Motian on drums. Remaining tracks feature Tristano and Marsh with Lee Konitz on alto, Sonny Dallas on bass, and Nick Stabulas on drums – working in slightly more open territory than the other tracks. Titles include "Continuity", "My Baby", "She's Funny That Way", "Subconscious Lee", "317 East 52nd", and "Background Music". LP, Vinyl record album

✨✧ Lennie Tristano/Buddy DeFrancoCrosscurrents ... LP
Capitol, 1949/1972. Near Mint- ... Out Of Stock
Although this set was issued in the 70s, it features some excellent rare early work by Tristano, originally recorded for Capitol in 1949. The material features a core of his early devotees – Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, and Billy Bauer – and the selection of tracks includes 2 especially amazing tracks – "Intuition" and "Digression" – both of which were freely improvised in the studio during recording! Along with the other material in the set – "Yesterdays", "Wow", "Sax Of A Kind", and "Maironette" – the record's an essential one for any Tristano fan. The other side of the record features some slightly modernist stuff by Buddy DeFranco, and titles on that stuff include "Bird In Igor's Yard", "Extrovert", and "Aishie". LP, Vinyl record album
(Red label pressing. Cover has minimal wear.)

One of THE key records in the Konitz school – an early Prestige 10" LP that features Lee's quintet on side one, and Lee & Lennie Tristano playing together in Tristano's quintet on side two! On side one, Konitz plays alto and is joined by Warne Marsh on tenor, Sal Mosca on piano, Arnold Fishkin on bass and Denzil Best on drums – gliding along magically on tracks that include "Marshmallow", "Sound - Lee", "Fishin' Around", and "Tautology". ✨✧ Lennie TristanoSupersonic – Portrait Of A Genius ... CD
Definitive (Spain), Late 40s. Used ... Out Of Stock
Amazing early work from Lennie Tristano – and proof that he'd developed all of his modernist ideals firmly in the years before his birth of the cool fame. The tracks are from obscure sources, and most likely appeared on 78 rpm records – and the dates given range from 1946 to 1949. Players include all the likely suspects – like Billy Bauer, Lee Konitz, Warne Marsh, and others – and although the recording quality isn't always excellent, the conception is, and the CD is perhaps one of the best on the market to give a clear picture of Tristano's true genius! There's a total of 26 cuts in all – including "Disgression", "Out On A Limb", "Interlude", "Blues", "Atonement", "Supersonic", and "On A Planet". CD

Warne MarshNe Plus Ultra ... LP
Revelation/Endless Happiness, 1969. New Copy (reissue)... $27.99 29.99
A masterpiece by Warne Marsh – and proof that there was always a committed modernist lurking behind some of his more straightforward playing! The session has sort of a post-Tristano underground west coast feel (if we can make up such a heavy handed term!), and it features a piano-less quartet with Marsh on tenor, Gary Foster on alto, Dave Parlato on bass, and Terry Tirabasso on drums. Foster's playing at this point in his career is wonderful, with lots of crispy icy tones that remind us of the best Konitz recordings of the mid 50s. Tracks are long and introspective, and titles include Tristano's "Lennies Pennies" and "317 E 32nd", Konitz's "Subconscious-Lee", and the original improvisation "Touch & Go". LP, Vinyl record album
